Vibrational polaritons are formed by strong coupling of molecular vibrations and photon modes in an optical cavity. Experiments have demonstrated that vibrational strong coupling can change molecular properties and even affect chemical reactivity. However, the interactions in a molecular ensemble are complex, and the exact mechanisms that lead to modifications are not fully understood yet. We simulate two-dimensional infrared spectra of molecular vibrational polaritons based on the double quantum coherence technique to gain further insight into the complex many-body structure of these hybrid light-matter states. Double quantum coherence uniquely resolves the excitation of hybrid light-matter polaritons and allows to directly probe the anharmonicities of the resulting states. By combining the cavity Born-Oppenheimer Hartree-Fock ansatz with a full quantum dynamics simulation of the corresponding eigenstates, we go beyond simplified model systems. This allows us to study the influence of self-polarization and the response of the electronic structure to the cavity interaction on the spectral features even beyond the single-molecule case.

Strong coupling of organic molecules to the vacuum field of a nanoscale cavity can be used to modify their chemical and physical properties. We extend the Tavis-Cummings model for molecular ensembles and show that the often neglected interaction terms arising from the static dipole moment and the dipole self-energy are essential for a correct description of the light-matter interaction in polaritonic chemistry. On the basis of a full quantum description, we simulate the excited-state dynamics and spectroscopy of MgH$^+$ molecules resonantly coupled to an optical cavity. We show that the inclusion of static dipole moments and the dipole self-energy is necessary to obtain a consistent model. We construct an efficient two-level system approach that reproduces the main features of the real molecular system and may be used to simulate larger molecular ensembles.

Recent experiments have revealed the profound effect of strong light-matter interactions in optical cavities on the electronic ground state of molecular systems. This phenomenon, known as vibrational strong coupling (VSC), can modify reaction rates and induce the formation of molecular vibrational polaritons, hybrid states involving both photon modes and vibrational modes of molecules. We present an ab-initio methodology, based on the cavity Born-Oppenheimer Hartree-Fock ansatz, which is specifically powerful for ensembles of molecules, to calculate vibro-polaritonic IR spectra. This method allows a comprehensive analysis of these hybrid states. Our semi-classical approach, validated against full quantum simulations, reproduces key features of the vibro-polaritonic spectra. The underlying analytic gradients also pave the way for optimizing cavity-coupled molecular systems and performing semi-classical dynamics simulations

Experimental studies indicate that optical cavities can affect chemical reactions, through either vibrational or electronic strong coupling and the quantized cavity modes. However, the current understanding of the interplay between molecules and confined light modes is incomplete. Accurate theoretical models, that take into account inter-molecular interactions to describe ensembles, are therefore essential to understand the mechanisms governing polaritonic chemistry. We present an ab-initio Hartree-Fock ansatz in the framework of the cavity Born-Oppenheimer approximation and study molecules strongly interacting with an optical cavity. This ansatz provides a non-perturbative, self-consistent description of strongly coupled molecular ensembles taking into account the cavity-mediated dipole self-energy contributions. To demonstrate the capability of the cavity Born-Oppenheimer Hartree-Fock ansatz, we study the collective effects in ensembles of strongly coupled diatomic hydrogen fluoride molecules. Our results highlight the importance of the cavity-mediated inter-molecular dipole-dipole interactions, which lead to energetic changes of individual molecules in the coupled ensemble.

We demonstrate that collective vibrational strong coupling of molecules in thermal equilibrium can give rise to significant local electronic polarizations in the thermodynamic limit. We do so by first showing that the full non-relativistic Pauli-Fierz problem of an ensemble of strongly-coupled molecules in the dilute-gas limit reduces in the cavity Born-Oppenheimer approximation to a cavity-Hartree equation for the electronic structure. Consequently, each individual molecule experiences a self-consistent coupling to the dipoles of all other molecules, which amount to non-negligible values in the thermodynamic limit (large ensembles). Thus collective vibrational strong coupling can alter individual molecules strongly for localized "hotspots" within the ensemble. Moreover, the discovered cavity-induced polarization pattern possesses a zero net polarization, which resembles a continuous form of a spin glass (or better polarization glass). Our findings suggest that the thorough understanding of polaritonic chemistry, requires a self-consistent treatment of dressed electronic structure, which can give rise to numerous, so far overlooked, physical mechanisms.

Collective coupling of an ensemble of particles to a light field is commonly described by the Tavis--Cummings model. This model includes numerous eigenstates which are optically decoupled from the optically bright polariton states. To access these dark states requires breaking the symmetry in the corresponding Hamiltonian. In this paper, we investigate the influence of non-unitary processes on the dark state dynamics in molecular Tavis--Cummings model. The system is modelled with a Lindblad equation that includes pure dephasing, as they would be caused by weak interactions with an environment, and photon decay. Our simulations show that the rate of the pure dephasing, as well as the number of particles, has a significant influence on the dark state population.

Coherent control experiments in molecules are often done with shaped laser fields. The electric field is described classically and control over the time evolution of the system is achieved by shaping the laser pulses in the time or frequency domain. Moving on from a classical to a quantum description of the light field allows to engineer the quantum state of light to steer chemical processes. The quantum field description of the photon mode allows to manipulate the light-matter interaction directly in phase-space. In this paper we will demonstrate the basic principle of coherent control with quantum light on the avoided crossing in lithium fluoride. Using a quantum description of light together with the nonadiabatic couplings and vibronic degrees of freedoms opens up new perspective on quantum control. We show the deviations from control with purely classical light field and how back-action of the light field becomes important in a few photon regime.

Streaking of photoelectrons has long been used for the temporal characterization of attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses. When the time-resolved photoelectrons originate from a coherent superposition of electronic states, they carry an additional phase information, which can be retrieved by the streaking technique. In this contribution we extend the streaking formalism to include coupled electron and nuclear dynamics in molecules as well as initial coherences and demonstrate how it offers a novel tool to monitor non-adiabatic dynamics as it occurs in the vicinity of conical intersections and avoided crossings. Streaking can enhance the time resolution and provide direct signatures of electronic coherences, which affect many primary photochemical and biological events.

Strong coupling of molecules to the vacuum field of micro cavities can modify the potential energy surfaces opening new photophysical and photochemical reaction pathways. While the influence of laser fields is usually described in terms of classical field, coupling to the vacuum state of a cavity has to be described in terms of dressed photon-matter states (polaritons) which require quantized fields. We present a derivation of the non-adiabatic couplings for single molecules in the strong coupling regime suitable for the calculation of the dressed state dynamics. The formalism allows to use quantities readily accessible from quantum chemistry codes like the adiabatic potential energy surfaces and dipole moments to carry out wave packet simulations in the dressed basis. The implications for photochemistry are demonstrated for a set of model systems representing typical situations found in molecules.

The problem of antiproton scattering on the molecular Hydrogen is investigated by means of wave packet dynamics. The electronically potential energy surfaces of the antiproton H2 system are presented within this work. Excitation and dissociation probabilities of the molecular Hydrogen for collision energies in the ultra low energy regime below 10 eV are computed.

The efficiency of cavity sideband cooling of trapped molecules is theoretically investigated for the case where the IR transition between two rovibrational states is used as a cycling transition. The molecules are assumed to be trapped either by a radio-frequency or optical trapping potential, depending on whether they are charged or neutral, and confined inside a high-finesse optical resonator which enhances radiative emission into the cavity mode. Using realistic experimental parameters and COS as a representative molecular example, we show that in this setup cooling to the trap ground state is feasible.

We present a modified optimal control scheme based on the Krotov method, which allows for strict limitations on the spectrum of the optimized laser fields, without losing monotonic convergence of the algorithm. The method guarantees a close link to learning loop control experiments and is demonstrated for the challenging control of non-resonant Raman transitions, which are used to implement a set of global quantum gates for molecular vibrational qubits., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We present detailed calculations at the basis of our recent proposal for simultaneous cooling the rotational, vibrational and external molecular degrees of freedom. In this method, the molecular rovibronic states are coupled by an intense laser and an optical cavity via coherent Raman processes enhanced by the strong coupling with the cavity modes. For a prototype system, OH, we showed that the translational motion is cooled to few micro Kelvin and the molecule is brought to the internal ground state in about a second. Here, we investigate numerically the dependence of the cooling scheme on the molecular polarizability, selecting NO as a second example. Furthermore, we demonstrate the general applicability of the proposed cooling scheme to initially vibrationally and rotationally hot molecular systems., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We predict that it is possible to cool rotational, vibrational and translational degrees of freedom of molecules by coupling a molecular dipole transition to an optical cavity. The dynamics is numerically simulated for a realistic set of experimental parameters using OH molecules. The results show that the translational motion is cooled to few $\mu$K and the internal state is prepared in one of the two ground states of the two decoupled rotational ladders in few seconds.
