Background: The Assistance to Participate Scale is a questionnaire to evaluate activity participation of children with developmental disabilities. The purpose of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Assistance to Participate Scale., Methods: Ninety-eight mothers' children with developmental disabilities were included in this study. The Assistance to Participate Scale, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, and Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory were applied to all subjects. To evaluate reliability, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, minimal detectable change (MDC) with standard error of measurement (SEM), and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for test-retest were used. The relationship between Assistance to Participate Scale, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, and Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory was investigated, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were used for construct validity., Results: Cronbach's alpha value of the scale was found.93, demonstrating that this value has excellent internal consistency. Test-retest reliability was found 0.99 (ICC 95% CI [0.995, 0.998]; SEM:0.57, MDC:1.58). For construct validity, the correlations between Assistance to Participate Scale, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, and Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory total scores and items were significant (p < .001). Factor analysis showed that the questionnaire had unidimensional and the explained variance was 0.84%., Conclusions: The Turkish version of the Assistance to Participate Scale is valid and reliable scale for children with developmental disabilities., (© 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the musculoskeletal pain distribution, quality of life, and the hopelessness level in mothers with disabled children in different ambulation levels., Methods: This study included a total of 177 mothers (mean age: 36.1 ± 6.5 years) of children with disabilities. The mothers were divided into 3 different groups according to the ambulation level of their disabled children: Ambulatory children (Group 1), partially ambulatory children (Group 2) and non-ambulatory children (Group 3). Musculoskeletal pain distribution (body diagram) and pain intensity (The Visual Analogue Scale), four quality of life parameters (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Health-Related Quality of Life -4 Questionnaire) and hopelessness level (Beck Hopelessness Scale) were evaluated in all mothers., Results: The results of our study showed that musculoskeletal pain was most common (79.1%) in the mothers of disabled children. The frequency and severity of back, shoulder and elbow pain in the mothers, number of activity limitation days and hopelessness level were found to increase significantly as the ambulation level in the child decreased (p< 0.05)., Conclusions: The risk of musculoskeletal pain, participation in daily life and hopelessness level in the mothers increased as the ambulation level of the disabled children decreased.

Objective: The musculoskeletal pain is one of the leading health problems among employed women. The aim of our study was to examine musculoskeletal pain, depression and quality of life (QOL) among employed women and find out the differences with unemployed women., Methods: A hundred and fifty employed women and 151 housewives were included in our study. We used visual analog scale (VAS) for the assessment of pain, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) for the depressive symptoms and Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) for the assessment of QOL., Results: The ratio of musculoskeletal pain among employed women and unemployed women were found as 42.5% and 57.5% respectively. A mild level of depression was found among employed women whereas moderate and vigorous level of depression were found among unemployed women. There were significant differences in terms of depression and QOL parameters. When the correlations of pain, depression and QOL were analyzed, significant high positive relationships between spinal, lower extremity, upper extremity pain levels and BDI and NHP were found only in housewives., Conclusions: Lower levels of depression among employed women can give the idea that social ambience at work place, focusing at work and economic independence play a role in decreasing depression.

This aim of this study was to determine the effect of different conservative treatment methods on pain intensity, disability, quality of life, and mood in patients with cervical spondylosis during a 6-month period. The patients were randomized into three groups. The 1st group (n = 20) was treated with active and passive physiotherapy methods, the 2nd group (n = 20) with active treatment methods, and the 3rd group (n = 20) with medication, including nonsteroid anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxing medicines. The 1st and 2nd groups received individual exercise treatment according to their current problems as determined by the assessment. Pain recovery was found to be statistically significant after treatment and long-term follow-up for all three groups (P < 0.05). Disability improvement was significant in all groups after treatment and 3rd months and only in 1st group after 6 months (P < 0.05). Quality of life improvement was significant in all groups after treatment, at 3 months, and in the 1st and 2nd groups at 6 months (P < 0.05). Psychological recovery was significant in all groups after treatment and in the 1st and 2nd groups during long-term follow-up (P < 0.05). It was determined that patient satisfaction did not change in the 1st and 2nd group (P > 0.05), but decreased in the 3rd group (P < 0.05) during long-term follow-up. There was more improvement in the two groups receiving exercise treatment than the group receiving medical treatment. In conclusion, exercise treatment has an important role in achieving long-term recovery of problems occurring with cervical spondylosis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of chair-based exercises on exercise perception, fall risk, and health-related quality of life in inactive older adults. The study was carried out on nursing home residents older than 65 years with an inactive lifestyle. The Exercise Benefits/Barriers Scale, Tinetti Assessment Battery, and Nottingham Health Profile were used in the assessments. The Exercise Benefits/Barriers Scale score and Tinetti Balance and Gait Test scores of the participants in the exercise group were higher than those of the control group. The study concluded that chair-based exercises are beneficial for sedentary older adults in respect of the perception of exercise and risk of falling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study aimed to compare the effects of Kinesio tape and conventional physiotherapy in addition to home exercise in patients with chronic neck pain. Material-Method: A total of 44 individuals were randomly divided into two groups. Conventional physiotherapy methods were applied to all subjects for 15 sessions. In addition to the study group, Kinesio tape application was performed each session. Pain, pressure pain threshold, range of motion, muscle strength, muscle endurance, pectoralis minor muscle length, disability level, quality of life, and depressive symptoms were evaluated. The first evaluation was conducted prior to the Kinesio tape application, the second was conducted 24 hours after the procedure, and the third was after 15 sessions. Results: A significant improvement was obtained in depression scores, muscle endurance, and patient satisfaction in favor of the study group (respectively p = 0.021, p=0.029, p= 0.009). Conclusion: Kinesio tape can be used to increase muscle endurance in the short term. Also, it can be said that Kinesio tape application provides additional benefits to the conventional physiotherapy method in terms of treatment satisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the influential factors of cognitive function in older adults. Methods: In this study, 377 older adults (mean age: 74.71 ± 6.15 years) were examined. The Hodkinson Abbreviated Mental Test (HAMT) was used to describe cognitive function of the individuals. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL-4) survey tool was used to measure the quality of life. Possible influential factors of cognitive function were also detected. The following independent variables were included in the logistic regression analysis: age, gender, education level, residency, smoking habit, musculoskeletal pain, medication use, number of unhealthy mental days, number of unhealthy physical days, and activity limitation days. Results: The results indicated that the elderly with cognitive impairment showed low scores in terms of the three parameters of the CDC HRQOL-4. The findings also indicate that the following variables were found to significantly affect cognitive function: (1) age, (2) residency (rest home), (3) smoking (yes or quit), and (4) number of unhealthy mental days. Conclusion: Older adults should be assessed in terms of factors related to cognition, such as age, residency, smoking, and mood in order to plan the most suitable geriatric care.
