Lewis acidic zeolites are rapidly emerging liquid-phase Lewis acid catalysts. Nevertheless, their inefficient synthesis procedure currently prohibits greater utilization and exploitation of these promising materials. Herein, we demonstrate that SnIV-containing zeolite beta can readily be prepared both selectively and extremely rapidly by solid-state incorporation (SSI) method. Through a combination of spectroscopic (XRD, UV/Vis, X-ray absorption, magic-angle spinning NMR, and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) studies, we unambiguously demonstrate that site-isolated, isomorphously substituted SnIV sites dominate the Sn population up to a loading of 5 wt % Sn. These sites are identical to those found in conventionally prepared Sn-beta, and result in our SSI material exhibiting identical levels of intrinsic activity (that is, turnover frequency) despite the threefold increase in Sn loading, and the extremely rapid and benign nature of our preparation methodology. We also identify the presence of spectator sites, in the form of SnIV oligomers, at higher levels of Sn loading. The consequences of this mixed population with regards to catalysis (Meerwein–Pondorf–Verley reaction and glucose isomerization) are also identified.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-stabilized Au nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by colloidal methods in which temperature variations (−75 to 75 °C) and mixed H2O/EtOH solvent ratios (0, 50, and 100 vol/vol) were used. The resulting Au NPs were immobilized on TiO2 (P25), and their catalytic performance was investigated for the liquid phase oxidation of glycerol. For each unique solvent system, there was a systematic increase in the average Au particle diameter as the temperature of the colloidal preparation increased. Generation of the Au NPs in H2O at 1 °C resulted in a high observed activity compared with current Au/TiO2 catalysts (turnover frequency = 915 h−1). Interestingly, Au catalysts with similar average particle sizes but prepared under different conditions had contrasting catalytic performance. For the most active catalyst, aberration-corrected high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis identified the presence of isolated Au clusters (from 1 to 5 atoms) for the first time using a modified colloidal method, which was supported by experimental and computational CO adsorption studies. It is proposed that the variations in the populations of these species, in combination with other solvent/PVA effects, is responsible for the contrasting catalytic properties.

We report a density functional theory study on the relative stability of formate species on Cu(h,k,l) low index surfaces using a range of exchange-correlation functionals. We find that these functionals predict similar geometries for the formate molecule adsorbed on the Cu surface. A comparison of the calculated vibrational transition energies of a perpendicular configuration of formate on Cu surface shows an excellent agreement with the experimental spectrum obtained from inelastic neutron spectroscopy. From the calculations on adsorption energy we find that formate is most stable on the Cu(110) surface as compared to Cu(111) and Cu(100) surfaces. Bader analysis shows that this feature could be related to the higher charge transfer from the Cu(110) surface and optimum charge density at the interfacial region due to bidirectional electron transfer between the formate and the Cu surface. Analysis of the partial density of states finds that in the –5.5eV to –4.0eV region, hybridization between O p and the non-axial Cu dyz and dxz orbitals takes place on the Cu(110) surface, which is energetically more favourable than on the other surfaces.

Aqueous phase reforming of glycerol was studied over a series of γ-Al2O3 supported metal nanoparticle catalysts for hydrogen production in a batch reactor. Of the metals studied, Pt/Al2O3 was found to be the most active catalyst under the conditions tested. A further systematic study on the impact of reaction parameters, including stirring speed, pressure, temperature, and substrate/metal molar ratio, was conducted and the optimum conditions for hydrogen production (and kinetic regime) were determined as 240 °C, 42 bar, 1000 rpm, and substrate/metal molar ratio ≥ 4100 for a 10 wt% glycerol feed. The glycerol conversion and hydrogen yield achieved at these conditions were 18% and 17%, respectively, with negligible CO and CH4 formation. Analysis of the spent catalyst using FTIR provides an indication that the reaction pathway includes glycerol dehydrogenation and dehydration steps in the liquid phase in addition to typical reforming and water gas shift reactions in the gas phase.

The development of efficient photocatalytic routines for producing hydrogen is of great importance as society moves away from energy sources derived from fossil fuels. Recent studies have identified that the addition of metal nanoparticles to TiO2 greatly enhances the photocatalytic performance of these materials towards the reforming of alcohols for hydrogen production. The core-shell structured Au-Pd bimetallic nanoparticle supported on TiO2 has being of interest as it exhibited extremely high quantum efficiencies for hydrogen production. However, the effect of shell composition and thickness on photocatalytic performance remains unclear. Here we report the synthesis of core-shell structured AuPd NPs with the controlled deposition of one and two monolayers (ML) equivalent of Pd onto Au NPs by colloidal and photodeposition methods. We have determined the shell composition and thickness of the nanoparticles by a combination of X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photocatalytic ethanol reforming showed that the core-shell structured Au-Pd promoters supported on TiO2 exhibit enhanced activity compared to that of monometallic Au and Pd as promoters, whilst the core-shell Au-Pd promoters containing one ML equivalent Pd provide the optimum reactivity. © the Owner Societies.

In the present work, a combination of imaging, spectroscopic and computational methods shows that 1 dodecanethiol undergoes S-deprotonation to form 1 dodecanethiolate on the surface of palladium nanoparticles, which then self-assembles into a structure that shows a high degree of order. The alkyl chain is largely in the all-trans conformation, which occurs despite the small size of the nanoparticle, (mean diameter = 3.9 nm). Inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy is readily able to characterise organic surface layers on nanoparticles; the nature of the material is irrelevant: whether the nanoparticle core is an oxide, a metal or a semiconductor makes no difference. Comparison to DFT calculations allows insights into the nature and conformation of the adsorbed layer.

We have investigated polyvinylalcohol stabilized Au and Ag based nanoparticles supported on titania prepared via sol immobilisation for the anaerobic, ambient temperature reforming of methanol with water for the photocatalytic production of hydrogen. The catalytic activity of the Au/TiO2 catalysts was strongly affected by the metal loading and calcination temperature. Here, we report the preparation and use of supported Au–Ag nanoparticles, based on either the co-reduction or the consecutive reduction of the two metals. Au–Ag supported catalysts were more active than monometallic Au and Ag catalysts and the preparation methodology had a pronounced effect in terms of catalytic activity of the Au–Ag catalysts. In fact, using a consecutive reduction where Au was firstly reduced followed by reduction of Ag gave materials which exhibited the highest catalytic performance.

The surface structure of iron molybdate is of great significance since this is the industrial catalyst for the direct selective oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. There is a debate concerning whether Fe2(MoO4)3 acts as a benign support for segregated MoO3 or if there is an intrinsic property of the surface structure which facilitates its high catalytic efficacy. This study provides new insights into the structure of this catalyst, identifying a bound terminating layer of octahedral Mo units as the active and selective phase. Here we examine whether only 1 monolayer of Mo on iron oxide alone is efficacious for this reaction. For a 1 ML MoOx shell-Fe2O3 core catalyst the Mo remains at the surface under all calcination procedures while exhibiting high selectivity and activity. The work highlights how catalyst surfaces are significantly different from bulk structures and this difference is crucial for catalyst performance.

Fe/ZSM-5(30) catalysts have been prepared by chemical vapour impregnation (CVI) using iron(iii) acetylacetonate as the precursor. These materials have been used for the oxidation of methane and ethane using aqueous hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. Heating in air leads to materials that exhibit high catalytic activity and give formic and acetic acid with high selectivity from methane and ethane respectively. Heat treatment of the uncalcined materials under a reducing atmosphere results in partial reduction of iron from the FeIII to FeII oxidation state with the majority of the iron being present as isolated octahedral extra-framework species having oxygen neighbours and showing no evidence of a coordination shell containing Al or Fe, as evidenced from studies using X-ray absorption and UV-Vis spectroscopies. These hydrogen treated catalysts show the same catalytic activity as their analogues formed by heating in air, but in contrast exhibit higher alcohol selectivities for both methane and ethane conversion to oxygenates and are reusable. Our findings for both the oxidation of methane and ethane indicate that the selectivity to the oxidation products, i.e. acids or alcohols, can be controlled by tuning the active site structure and/or oxidation state of the Fe species in Fe/ZSM-5. © 2014 the Partner Organisations.
