Roof surfaces on which air conditioning equipment is installed cause significant air temperature increases around the condensers due to roof thermal properties, resulting in excess electrical energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. An experiment to quantify such excesses during the summer was conducted at a university campus in Mexicali, Mexico. The air temperatures and surface temperatures for three types of roofs were recorded. Temperatures (condenser inlet air temperatures) were used as the input data to a priori estimate the electrical consumption of a 5-ton A/C equipment working over these different roofs. Temperatures recorded by a nearby meteorological station were used as a reference. The results indicate a differential of up to 4.81 °C, resulting in an excess of electricity consumption of 5.55 kWh and an additional 3.9 kg of CO2 emissions, representing an 8.2% energy surplus and differences of up to 2.1% in electricity consumption provoked by microclimate.

Abstract The objective was to analyze how representative tropospheric NO2 column densities are of surface NO2 measurements under different atmospheric stability conditions in the air basin of two border cities: Calexico, United States, and Mexicali, Mexico. NO2 columns were measured by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on the NASA Aura satellite. NO2 concentrations and meteorological parameters were also measured on the surface for comparison. Specifically, the correlations between OMI and surface NO2 concentrations under different atmospheric stability conditions according to the Pasquill‐Gifford (P‐G) and Monin‐Obukhov (M‐O) classification schemes were determined for 2017 and 2018. During the passage of the satellite through the study area (11:00–13:00 UTC−8), unstable conditions were documented in both years. Good correlation was found between the surface NO2 and OMI NO2 column observations in the second semester of each year, particularly under unstable conditions as diagnosed by the P‐G and M‐O schemes applied in the first and second year, respectively. However, a weakening of these conditions occurs during the autumn–winter period. In both cases, the highest determination coefficients were found for Calexico, with values of 0.48 and 0.36 in 2017 and 2018, respectively; for Mexicali, the determination coefficients were 0.23 and 0.35, respectively. Under each atmospheric stability scheme, the mechanical and convective turbulence caused a decreasing trend in wind speed and solar radiation over the course of second semester of 2017 and in friction velocity, temperature, and sensible heat flux over the course of the same period for 2018. The negative trend of these parameters during the analyzed time frames helped to reduce the influence of unstable atmospheric conditions, favoring better correlations between satellite and surface NO2 measurements. The methodology applied and results obtained herein can enable us to better understand the representativeness of OMI NO2 data in arid border zones with extreme meteorological conditions.

Net radiation is an essential forcing of climate in the lower layers of Earth’s atmosphere. In this paper, radiation balance is measured in clay soil and green grass, and is compared with three urban materials. These materials: asphalt, concrete and white painted elastomeric polystyrene roofing sheet are widely used in Mexicali, Baja California, México. This study was carried out during August of 2011, the hottest time of the year. The 24-hour average values of net radiation found were: 137.2 W·m−2 for asphalt, 119.1 for concrete, 104.6 for clay soil, 152 for green grass and 29.2 for the polystyrene insulation. The latter two types of materials are likely to be the most effective in reducing urban heat island effects. This variation in the radiation balance has widespread implications for human living conditions, as land cover change tends to be towards surfaces that have higher levels of net radiation.

Northwestern Mexico has a desert climate with high solar resources. Clear skies and low humidity during most of the year favor their use. In winter, the arrival of cold air masses from the polar latitudes cause instability and abrupt changes in atmospheric variables, increasing the error of short-term forecasts. This work focuses on the evaluation of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for predicting the global horizontal irradiance (GHI), considering different parameterizations of shortwave and longwave solar radiation during the influence of five cold fronts that affected the desert region of northwestern Mexico. The simulation was carried out under four main shortwave configurations and the results were evaluated with surface measurements and compared with climate information from NASA-POWER. The GHI predicted with the Dudhia parameterization showed an overestimation of the WRF model during most of the analyzed events; the most accurate predictions obtained correlation values between 0.85 and 0.91 and a mean absolute error between 15 and 45 W m−2. In periods where intermittent clouds prevailed, the mean error increased by almost 20%. An evaluation of the different proposed configurations shows advantages with the shortwave Dudhia and longwave RRTM parameterizations, providing a useful meteorological tool for predicting short-range variations in the GHI to improve the operability of solar power generation systems.
