At the present time, ultrahigh performance superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors are the key elements in a variety of devices from biological research to quantum communications and computing. Accurate tuning of superconducting material properties is a powerful resource for fabricating single-photon detectors with desired properties. Here, we report on the major theoretical relations between ultrathin niobium nitride (NbN) film properties and superconducting nanowire single-photon detector characteristics, as well as the dependence of ultrathin NbN film properties on reactive magnetron sputtering recipes. Based on this study, we formulate the exact requirements for ultrathin NbN films for ultrahigh performance superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. Then, we experimentally studied the properties of ultrathin NbN films (morphology, crystalline structure, critical temperature, and sheet resistance) on silicon, sapphire, silicon dioxide, and silicon nitride substrates sputtered with various recipes. We demonstrate ultrathin NbN films (obtained with more than 100 films deposition) with a wide range of critical temperature from 2.5 to 12.1 K and sheet resistance from 285 to 2000 Ω/sq and report a sheet resistance evolution of more than 40% within two years. Finally, we found out that one should use ultrathin NbN films with a specific critical temperature near 9.5 K and a sheet resistance of about 350 Ω/sq for ultrahigh performance state-of-the-art superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors at 1550 nm wavelength.

Considering that the determination of fire hazard zones in warehouses is not sufficiently researched and studied, this paper aims to present a new methodological approach concerning the mentioned issue. Based on the COPRAS multi-criteria decision-making method, a new method was developed for the precise determination of potential zones where there is a risk of fire. The advantage of the described method is that it allows the quick and easy determination of all-orientation fire risk zones. The method requires fewer hardware resources compared to the existing ones and enables the display of the warehouse space in the form of a 3D model with calculated fire hazard zones. The mentioned procedure represents the first step when planning the layout and arrangement in the warehouse itself. The effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed through a suitable numerical example.

We investigate the metal-to-insulator phase transition driven by the density-density electronic interaction in the quarter-filled model on a cubic lattice with two orbitals split by a crystal field. We show that a systematic consideration of the nonlocal collective electronic fluctuations strongly affects the picture of the phase transition provided by the dynamical mean-field theory. Our calculations reveal the appearance of metallic and Mott insulating states characterized by the same density but different values of the chemical potential, which is missing in the local approximation to electronic correlations. We find that the region of concomitant metastability of these two solutions is remarkably broad in terms of the interaction strength. It starts at a critical value of the interaction slightly larger than the bandwidth and extends to more than twice the bandwidth, where the two solutions merge into a Mott insulating phase. Our results illustrate that nonlocal correlations can have crucial consequences on the electronic properties in the strongly correlated regime of the simplest multiorbital systems.

Background and Objectives: The nonlinear phase of the development of Parker’s instability of large-scale oscillations of magnetic fields at various depths of the convective zone of the Sun up to the stage of saturation is investigated. Materials and Methods: Based on the conservative difference scheme, an algorithm for calculating the dynamics of a thin magnetic tube when moving in the convective zone and the solar atmosphere is presented. The equilibrium conditions of the position of the magnetic tube at various depths of the convective zone are determined. The types of linear oscillations of the tube near the equilibrium position are defined: fast (Alfven) and slow (varicose) waves. Results: The calculation has revealed the realization of quasilinear oscillations of emerging magnetic fields near the photospheric level, generating a steady stream of weak shock waves in the lower layers of the solar atmosphere. It has been shown that the development of Parker’s instability in the low-frequency part of the spectrum of global oscillations of magnetic fields provides a stable, spherically symmetric structure of anomalous heating in the era of the minimum solar activity cycle. With an increase in the frequency of global oscillations of magnetic fields at the stage of growth of the cycle activity, the structure of anomalous heating becomes spatially inhomogeneous – radiation. Conclusion: The number of rays of anomalous heating with the development of the activity cycle monotonously increases and, in the era of maximum activity, passes into a spatially uniform structure of anomalous heating of the atmosphere in accordance with the observed data.

Environment is assumed to play a negative role in quantum mechanics, destroying the coherence in a quantum system and, thus, randomly changing its state. However, for a quantum system that is initially in a degenerate ground state, the situation could be different. In this case, the infinite manifold of ground state eigenfunctions can contain a few states of zero entanglement, which can be demonstrated based on the minimization of the von Neumann entropy. Then, following quantum Darwinism, these “classical” combinations are selected and promoted by the quantum environment, which means that different independent observers find them in experiments. In this work, we find and explore such classical states in the eigenspectra of skyrmionic and antiferromagnetic quantum systems starting from a numerical realization of Anderson’s tower of states. The degeneracy of the quantum ground state is shown to be the key for explaining nontrivial properties of magnetic matter in the classical world including topological protection arising in the classical limit.

The effect of thermal motion of a transverse domain wall (DW) on the thermodynamic states of a cylindrical iron nanowire (INW) is studied. It is shown that the contribution of the thermal motion of a transverse DW to the entropy and heat capacity of a cylindrical INW can be an actual value, along with the thermodynamic components of its electron, magnon, and phonon (Debye component) subsystems. The critical diameters corresponding to this phenomenon are determined; their magnitudes are lower as compared to the nickel nanowire (Shevchenko et al., 2020). The influence of the thermal motion of a transverse DW on the average magnetization of a cylindrical ferromagnetic nanowire is investigated—it is found out that the maximum magnitude of its relative average magnetization in weak magnetic fields (much lower than 2πM, where M is the magnetization of the nanowire) is ⩽1.2·10-2. It is shown that changes in M affect the temperature of a given thermodynamic state. For example, a reduction of the INW magnetization from M=1.7·103Gs to 102Gs results to a decrease in the temperature (for a given diameter) from 970K to 57K.

Herein, the oxidation behaviour of refractory (HfCo)100−x(NbMo)x (x = 0; 10; 25; 40; 75; 100 (at.%)) high-entropy alloys with a bcc+B2 structure subjected to cyclic oxidation at 1000 °C was studied. The single-phase B2-ordered HfCo alloy demonstrated the best spallation resistance and retained a pristine form after 100 h. The oxidation kinetics of the HfCo alloy was near-parabolic, accompanied by the formation of external HfO2 or CoO layers after 1 or 100 h, respectively. Additions of (NbMo)x deteriorated the spallation resistance (x ≤ 25 at.%) or led to complete disintegration (x > 25 at.%). Among the (NbMo)-containing alloys, the (HfCo)90(NbMo)10 alloy with the dual-phase bcc+B2 structure showed the most promising oxidation resistance. This alloy withstood cyclic oxidation up to 15 h with a mass gain close to the HfCo alloy and survived 100 h without changes in geometry of the specimen. Unlike the HfCo alloy, in the (HfCo)90(NbMo)10 alloy, the external CoO layer was found already after 1 h. The effect of chemical and phase compositions on the formation of certain oxides was discussed. Comparison with the other refractory high-entropy alloys was also presented.

Background and Objectives: The physical mechanism of the generation of a steady wave flow at the photospheric level is studied, which ensures anomalous heating of the solar atmosphere at various stages of the solar activity cycle. Background and Objectives: We study the conditions of stability loss for slow modes of oscillation at various depths of the convective zone and the development of Parker’s instability, which leads to the ejection of magnetic fields into the atmosphere of the Sun. Materials and Methods: Based on the conservative difference scheme, an algorithm for calculating the dynamics of a thin magnetic tube when moving in the convective zone and the solar atmosphere is presented. The equilibrium conditions of the position of the magnetic tube at various depths of the convective zone are determined. The types of linear oscillations of the tube near the equilibrium position were determined: fast (Alfven) and slow (varicose) waves. Results: The physical mechanism for generating weak shock waves at the photospheric level by emerging magnetic fields at the nonlinear stage of development (saturation) of Parker’s instability is determined. Conclusion: The results allow further detailed analysis of wave flow generation in the lower layers of the Sun’s atmosphere at various stages of the cycle activity.

Thick (23 µm) films of κ-Ga2O3 were grown by Halide Vapor Phase Epitaxy (HVPE) on GaN/sapphire templates at 630 °C. X-ray analysis confirmed the formation of single-phase κ-Ga2O3 with half-widths of the high-resolution x-ray diffraction (004), (006), and (008) symmetric reflections of 4.5 arc min and asymmetric (027) reflection of 14 arc min. Orthorhombic κ-Ga2O3 polymorph formation was confirmed from analysis of the Kikuchi diffraction pattern in electron backscattering diffraction. Secondary electron imaging indicated a reasonably flat surface morphology with a few (area density ∼103 cm−2) approximately circular (diameter ∼50–100 µm) uncoalesced regions, containing κ-Ga2O3 columns with in-plane dimensions and a height of about 10 µm. Micro-cathodoluminescence (MCL) spectra showed a wide 2–3.5 eV band that could be deconvoluted into narrower bands peaked at 2.59, 2.66, 2.86, and 3.12 eV. Ni Schottky diodes prepared on the films showed good rectification but a high series resistance. The films had a thin near-surface region dominated by Ec − 0.7 eV deep centers and a deeper region (∼2 µm from the surface) dominated by shallow donors with concentrations of ≤1016 cm−3. Photocurrent and photocapacitance spectra showed the presence of deep compensating acceptors with optical ionization energies of ∼1.35 and 2.3 eV, the latter being close to the energy of one of the MCL bands. Deep level transient spectroscopy revealed deep traps with energies near 0.3, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 1 eV from the conduction band edge. The results show the potential of HVPE to grow very thick κ-Ga2O3 on GaN/sapphire templates.

Annotation In this article, the use of the barycentric method is proposed for the numerical solution of problems of diffraction of electromagnetic waves on infinitely thin perfectly conducting screens of arbitrary shape. The numerical solution is formed in the projection formulation of the Galerkin method. The essence of the barycentric method is to form a global system of basic functions for opening the screen when determining the approximation of the desired function of the current plane on its surface. Basis functions are defined by Bernstein-type polynomials in terms of barycentric coordinates that are entered for opening the screen when it is represented as a closed simply connected polygonal region. The features of the algorithmic implementation of the barycentric method in solving diffraction problems on conducting thin screens are considered. The rate of convergence is estimated. Comparative results of calculations performed under equivalent conditions using the barycentric method and the RWG method are presented.

In the article, the features of using the barycentric method in solving problems of electrodynamic analysis of mirror antennas are considered. The solution of the internal problem of electrodynamics is the basis of the study. The problem of electrodynamic analysis of a mirror antenna is formulated in the classical representation of the problem of diffraction of an electromagnetic wave on a system of infinitely thin perfectly conducting screens of arbitrary shape and reduced to a system of integro-differential equations. The solution of the latter is performed numerically in the projection formulation of the Galerkin method when determining the approximation of the desired surface current density function in the system of global basis functions formed in the approximation of the barycentric method for the analyzed screen. The integral representation of the electromagnetic field of the mirror antenna, taking into account the properties of the introduced basic functions, is given. Thefeatures of the algorithmic implementation of the developed solutions are clarified. The efficiency and comparative preference of the use of the barycentric method in the problems of electrodynamic analysis of mirror antennas are tested on test examples.

Inverse cascades of kinetic energy and thermal variance in the subset of vertically homogeneous modes in spectral space are found to cause a slow aggregation to a pair of convective supergranules that eventually fill the whole horizontally extended, three-dimensional, turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection layer when a heat flux is prescribed at the top and bottom. An additional weak rotation of the layer around the vertical axis stops this aggregation at a scale that is smaller than the lateral domain extension and ceases the inverse cascade for the thermal variance. The inverse cascade for the kinetic energy remains intact, even for times at which the root-mean-square values of temperature and velocity have reached the statistically steady state. This kinetic energy inverse cascade sustains the horizontally extended convection patterns which are best visible in the temperature field. The resulting characteristic length of the aggregated convection patterns depends on the thermal driving and linearly on the strength of rotation. Our study demonstrates the importance of inverse energy cascades beyond the two-dimensional turbulence case in a three-dimensional convection flow that is subject to a multiscale energy injection by thermal plumes and driven by boundary heat fluxes as typically present in natural geo- and astrophysical systems, such as solar convection.

The effect of a dielectric conical structure on the adsorption properties of an enzyme on mica was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) with the example of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The cone used was a cellulose cone with a 60° apex angle. Namely, AFM allowed us to reveal an increase in the enzyme’s aggregation during its adsorption onto mica from the solution incubated near the cone apex for 40 min—as compared with the control enzyme samples incubated far away from the cone. In contrast, no change in the HRP adsorption properties was observed after shorter (10 min) incubation of the sample near the cone. The enzymatic activity of HRP was found to be the same for all the enzyme samples studied. Our findings should be considered upon designing biosensors (in particular, those intended for highly sensitive diagnostic applications) and bioreactors containing conical structural elements. Furthermore, since HRP is widely employed as a model enzyme in studies of external impacts on enzymes determining food quality, our data can be of use in the development of food-processing methods based on the use of electromagnetic radiation (microwave treatment, radiofrequency heating, etc.).

Third-order nonlinear susceptibilities χ3−2ω;ω,ω,0 and χ3−ω;ω,−ω,ω responsible for electric-field-induced second harmonic generation and the optical Kerr effect were measured and directly compared for tellurite and chalcogenide glasses. The nonlinear coefficients were found by measuring the second harmonic radiation from samples under the action of an external field of terahertz pulses and by the classical z-scan technique, respectively. The influence of ambient air and helium gas on second harmonic generation was analyzed. It was demonstrated that both susceptibilities χ3−2ω;ω,ω,0 and χ3−ω;ω,−ω,ω have close absolute values, which shows the dominant role of nonresonant electronic nonlinearity in the studied glasses.

To obtain composite fiber materials with antibacterial properties, the samples of bacterial cellulose (BC), polylactide (PLA) and usual fibers (FM) were modified by poly-ε-caprolactone or polyhydroxybutyrate and then functionalized by the enzyme-polyelectrolyte complex of quorum-quenching enzymes, such as hexahistidine-tagged organophosphorus hydrolase with poly(glutamic acid) or by suspension of tantalum nanoparticles (Ta NPs) in ethanol. The structures of the composite fibers were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that the introduction of additional natural polymers into the matrix of BC, PLA and FM resulted in decreasing of the structural porosity. Comparative studies of the antibacterial activity of the composite materials were carried out using Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis cells. The decrease of adenosine triphosphate concentration in cell samples loaded onto fiber materials was applied as a measurable characteristic of antibacterial effect typical for the new fiber materials. The profound improvement of antibacterial activity was determined in composite materials with polyhydroxybutyrate and Ta NPs.

We study stochastic dynamics of an inverted pendulum subject to a random force in the horizontal direction (Whitney's problem). Considered on the entire time axis, the problem admits a unique solution that always remains in the upper half plane. We formulate the problem of statistical description of this never-falling trajectory and solve it by a field-theoretical technique assuming a white-noise driving. In our approach based on the supersymmetric formalism of Parisi and Sourlas, statistic properties of the never-falling trajectory are expressed in terms of the zero mode of the corresponding transfer-matrix Hamiltonian. The emerging mathematical structure is similar to that of the Fokker-Planck equation, which however is written for the "square root" of the probability distribution function. Our results for the statistics of the non-falling trajectory are in perfect agreement with direct numerical simulations of the stochastic pendulum equation. In the limit of strong driving (no gravitation), we obtain an exact analytical solution for the instantaneous joint probability distribution function of the pendulum's angle and its velocity.

We present the multi-band dual triply irreducible local expansion (D-TRILEX) approach to interacting electronic systems and discuss its numerical implementation. This method is designed for a self-consistent description of multi-orbital systems that can also have several atoms in the unit cell. The current implementation of the D-TRILEX approach is able to account for the frequency- and channel-dependent long-ranged electronic interactions. We show that our method is accurate when applied to small multi-band systems such as the Hubbard-Kanamori dimer. Calculations for the extended Hubbard, the two-orbital Hubbard-Kanamori, and the bilayer Hubbard models are also discussed.

Numerous computations of the spectra of molecules are performed by mainstream methods based on the fundamental work by Lax [J. Chem. Phys. 20, 1752 (1952)] for smoothing a series of individual transitions represented by delta functions. There is an assumption that the linewidth of an individual rovibronic transition spectrum is many orders of magnitude smaller than the rovibronic bandwidth. However, the presence of rotational–vibrational structure in the molecular spectrum masks the broadening of each individual rovibronic transition. In this work, in the framework of harmonic approximation of potential energy surfaces, a new kind of contribution to homogenous broadening is considered to describe the optical spectrum of any single rovibronic transition. Its origin is in zero-point oscillations and thermal fluctuations around equilibrium positions of nuclei. Franck–Condon diagrams with slanting equidistant vibrational levels are proposed. Expressions of the spectral intensity of a single vibronic transition are derived from the first principles. This theory was used to estimate the broadening magnitude of the vibronic transition due to quantum uncertainty of nuclear coordinates of linear polymethine dyes with an extended π-electron system. It was shown that the calculated magnitude of the broadening is approximately two times smaller than the bandwidth observed in the experiment but it has the same order of magnitude. The value of such broadening depends on the environment that restricts the vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom of the molecule. It was demonstrated that an organic chromophore with an extended π-electron system can be considered to be a molecular optical parametric oscillator.

The incubation of a solution of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme either below the apex or near the base of an inversely oriented square pyramid (inverted square pyramid; ISP) has been found to influence the enzyme’s aggregation and adsorption properties. The HRP enzyme is used herein as a model object due to its importance in analytical chemistry applications. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is employed to investigate the HRP’s adsorption on mica substrates at the single-molecule level. Conventional spectrophotometry is used in parallel as a reference method for the determination of the HRP’s enzymatic activity. Using AFM, we reveal a significant change in the adsorption properties of HRP on mica substrates after the incubation of the HRP solutions either above the base or below the apex of the ISP in comparison with the control HRP solution. The same situation is observed after the incubation of the enzyme solution above the center of the ISP’s base. Here, the enzymatic activity of HRP remained unaffected in both cases. Since pyramidal structures of positive and inverted orientation are employed in biosensor devices, it is important to take into account the results obtained herein in the development of highly sensitive biosensor systems, in which pyramidal structures are employed as sensor (such as AFM probes) or construction elements.

Based on the method of laser triangulation, a mobile high-precision sensor has been created for measuring displacements and monitoring the geometric parameters of products in production. The process of signal processing and the operation of the triangulation sensor are accelerated many times by the architecture of processes, which is based on a reduced set of commands using simple and effective instructions of the stm32f407vet6 microcontroller. The measurement algorithm is carried out by searching for a laser spot, calculating the center of the spot using the center of mass method, translating the centroid into the metric and applying calibration tables. Sensor scan speed leaves 3 ÷ 5∙103 s-1

The study describes the experimental complex of the station located in the Tien Shan mountains at an elevation of 3340 m above sea level. The complex consists of detectors of different types scattered across the station area, such as scintillation particles detectors, Cherenkov detectors, radio emission detectors for the measurement of the electron component of extensive air showers (EAS) created by the (1–1000) PeV cosmic ray particles, an ionization calorimeter and neutron detectors for the study of the nuclear-active component of EAS cores, and the underground particle detectors for the detection of cosmic ray muons. The data acquisition system allows the simultaneous recording of parameters from various stand-alone detectors registering an EAS, and storage of the acquired data in the database. As an illustration of research capability, the results of the EAS study are presented here which were obtained during the last few years at the different experimental set-ups constituting the Tien Shan complex.

The composition, structure, and biological activity of humic-like substances (HLS) synthesized in the process of lignosulfonate conversion for the production of the humic product Lignohumate® (LH) were examined. It is shown that during the hydrolytic-oxidative process, the transformation of raw material and accumulation of HLS occur. Data on the chemical (elemental content, functional groups, FTIR) and spectral (absorbance and fluorescence) parameters and biological activity (in phytotest) combined with PCA show that the LH samples can be divided into three groups, depending on the duration of synthesis: initial raw material (0-time sample); “young” HLS (15–30 min), and “mature” HLS in 45–120 min of treatment. During the first 30 min, reactions similar to the ones that occur during lignin humification in nature take place: depolymerization, oxidative carboxylation, and further polycondensation with the formation and accumulation of HLS. After 45–60 min, the share of HLS reaches a maximum, and its composition stabilizes. Biological activity reaches a maximum after 45–60 min of treatment, and at that stage, the further synthesis process can be stopped. Further processing (up to 2 h and more) does not provide any added value to the humic product.

Epitaxial layers of α-Ga2O3 with different Sn doping levels were grown by halide vapor phase epitaxy on sapphire. The films had shallow donor concentrations ranging from 1017 to 4.8 × 1019 cm−3. Deep level transient spectroscopy of the lowest doped samples revealed dominant A traps with level Ec − 0.6 eV and B traps near Ec − 1.1 eV. With increasing shallow donor concentration, the density of the A traps increased, and new traps C (Ec − 0.85 eV) and D (Ec − 0.23 eV) emerged. Photocapacitance spectra showed the presence of deep traps with optical ionization energy of ∼2 and 2.7 eV and prominent persistent photocapacitance at low temperature, surviving heating to temperatures above room temperature. The diffusion length of nonequilibrium charge carriers was 0.15 µm, and microcathodoluminescence spectra showed peaks in the range 339–540 nm, but no band-edge emission.

A scheme of an optical microscope is described, which includes a special bi telecentric optics for the formation of a diode support and a telecentric objective for capturing the image. The use of such optics makes it possible to reduce the effect of diffraction effects at the edges of the shadow structure and to measure with the help of a microscope the parameters of a cutting micro-tool such as a protrusion and a diameter. An algorithm for modeling the two main visual channels of the human eye is developed allowing rapid detection of spatial-temporal processes and noise and providing a measurement of the contour of the cutting edge of the instrument with a sub pixel (up to 0.01 pixel) error and determining the size of the cutting tool with an error of 0.5 μm.

The need for research using modern methods of physical and chemical analysis in combination with methods for processing the graphical results arises with an increase of developments aimed at changing the structure and properties of hydration-hardening materials. Currently, the method of scanning electron microscopy is widely used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of materials. Additional information, including fractal analysis of the image, determines the information-entropy levels and the state of the information system in the form of the microstructure based on the generalized structural entropy that increases the volume and quality of analytical information extracted from the obtained images. Images with a magnification of 20,000 times were used to analyze the microstructure of a control cement composite and a carbon black modified composite. The fractal analysis of the images revealed a change in the relative organization of the system, which justifiedthe nature of the change in the physical and technical properties of the modified cement composite relative to the additive-free cement composite from the perspective of self-organization.

The Hubbard model represents the fundamental model for interacting quantum systems and electronic correlations. Using the two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model at weak coupling as a testing ground, we perform a comparative study of a comprehensive set of state-of-the-art quantum many-body methods. Upon cooling into its insulating antiferromagnetic ground state, the model hosts a rich sequence of distinct physical regimes with crossovers between a high-temperature incoherent regime, an intermediate-temperature metallic regime, and a low-temperature insulating regime with a pseudogap created by antiferromagnetic fluctuations. We assess the ability of each method to properly address these physical regimes and crossovers through the computation of several observables probing both quasiparticle properties and magnetic correlations, with two numerically exact methods (diagrammatic and determinantal quantum Monte Carlo methods) serving as a benchmark. By combining computational results and analytical insights, we elucidate the nature and role of spin fluctuations in each of these regimes. Based on this analysis, we explain how quasiparticles can coexist with increasingly long-range antiferromagnetic correlations and why dynamical mean-field theory is found to provide a remarkably accurate approximation of local quantities in the metallic regime. We also critically discuss whether imaginary-time methods are able to capture the non-Fermi-liquid singularities of this fully nested system.

We introduce a new method to continuously map inhomogeneities of a moiré lattice and apply it to large-area topographic images we measure on open-device twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We show that the variation in the twist angle of a TBG device, which is frequently conjectured to be the reason for differences between devices with a supposed similar twist angle, is about 0.08^{∘} around the average of 2.02^{∘} over areas of several hundred nanometers, comparable to devices encapsulated between hexagonal boron nitride slabs. We distinguish between an effective twist angle and local anisotropy and relate the latter to heterostrain. Our results imply that for our devices, twist angle heterogeneity has an effect on the electronic structure roughly equal to that of local strain. The method introduced here is applicable to results from different imaging techniques and on different moiré materials.

The efficiency of using the collector pressing scheme in the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) process has been confirmed in improving the optical, physical, and mechanical properties of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics with an increased shape factor. An approach for developing a seal surface and determining the optimal method of increasing pressure and temperature during SPS on this surface was used to optimize the consolidation modes of the materials. It has been shown that transparent/translucent YSZ ceramics with an increased shape factor (14 mm in diameter and up to 5 mm in height, h/d = 0.36) can be successfully fabricated by the SPS technique combined with the collector pressing scheme. The optical properties and microhardness of ceramics obtained using the collector scheme are better to the optical properties of ceramics obtained using the conventional uniaxial pressing scheme.

Azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons with direct-photon (γdir) and neutral-pion (π0) trigger particles are analyzed in central Au+Au and minimum-bias p+p collisions at sNN=200 GeV in the STAR experiment. The charged-hadron per-trigger yields at mid-rapidity from central Au+Au collisions are compared with p+p collisions to quantify the suppression in Au+Au collisions. The suppression of the away-side associated-particle yields per γdir trigger is independent of the transverse momentum of the trigger particle (pTtrig), whereas the suppression is smaller at low transverse momentum of the associated charged hadrons (pTassoc). Within uncertainty, similar levels of suppression are observed for γdir and π0 triggers as a function of zT (≡pTassoc/pTtrig). The results are compared with energy-loss-inspired theoretical model predictions. Our studies support previous conclusions that the lost energy reappears predominantly at low transverse momentum, regardless of the trigger energy.

We report the measurement of the one-dimensional charged kaon correlation functions using 600GeV/c Σ−, π− and 540GeV/c p beams from the SELEX (E781) experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. K±K± correlation functions are studied for three transverse pair momentum, kT, ranges and parameterized by a Gaussian form. The emission source radii, R, and the correlation strength, λ, are extracted. The analysis shows a decrease of the source radii with increasing kaon transverse pair momentum for all beam types.

The influence of liquid motion in flow-based systems on the aggregation state of an enzyme and on its enzymatic activity was studied, with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as an example. Our experiments were carried out in a setup modeling the flow section of the biosensor communication with a measuring cell containing a protein solution. Studies were conducted for a biosensor measuring cell located along the axis of a spiral-moving liquid flow. The aggregation state of the protein was determined with an atomic force microscopy-based sensor (AFM sensor). It has been demonstrated that upon flowing of water through silicone biosensor communications, an increased aggregation of HRP protein was observed, but, at the same time, its enzymatic activity did not change. Our results obtained herein are useful in the development of models describing the influence of liquid flow in biosensor communications on the properties of enzymes and other proteins. This is particularly important for the development of serologic protein biosensors, which are beginning to be used for the early diagnosis of oncological diseases (such as brain cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer etc.). The results obtained herein should also be taken into account when considering possible changes in hemodynamics due to increased protein aggregation.

A global heat flux model based on a fractional derivative of plasma pressure is proposed for the heat transport in fusion plasmas. The degree of the fractional derivative of the heat flux, α, is defined through the power balance analysis of the steady state. The model was used to obtain the experimental values of α for a large database of the Joint European Torus (JET) carbon-wall as well as ITER like-wall plasmas. In this study, we have invented a method of delivering drugs deep into articular cartilage with shaped dynamic magnetic fields acting on small metallic magnetic nanoparticles with polyethylene glycol coating and average diameter of 30 nm. It was shown that transport of magnetic nanoparticles through the entire thickness of bovine articular cartilage can be controlled by a combined alternating magnetic field at 100 Hz frequency and static magnetic field of 0.8 tesla (T) generated by 1" dia. x 2" thick permanent magnet. Magnetic nanoparticles transport through bovine articular cartilage samples was investigated at various settings of magnetic field and time durations. Combined application of an alternating magnetic field and the static field gradient resulted in a nearly 50 times increase in magnetic nanoparticles transport in bovine articular cartilage tissue as compared with static field conditions. This method can be applied to locally deliver therapeutic-loaded magnetic nanoparticles deep into articular cartilage to prevent cartilage degeneration and promote cartilage repair in osteoarthritis.

The properties of liquid crystal-magnetic nanoparticle composites have potential for sensing in the body. We study the response of a liquid crystal-magnetic nanoparticle (LC-MNP) composite to applied potentials of hundreds of volts per meter. Measuring samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and imaging composites using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we demonstrate that electric potentials applied across centimeter scale LC-MNP composite samples can be detected using XRD and MRI techniques.

The STAR Collaboration presents for the first time two-dimensional di-hadron correlations with identified leading hadrons in 200 GeV central Au+Au and minimum-bias d+Au collisions to explore hadronization mechanisms in the quark gluon plasma. The enhancement of the jet-like yield for leading pions in Au+Au data with respect to the d+Au reference and the absence of such an enhancement for leading non-pions (protons and kaons) are discussed within the context of a quark recombination scenario. The correlated yield at large angles, specifically in the ridge region, is found to be significantly higher for leading non-pions than pions. The consistencies of the constituent quark scaling, azimuthal harmonic model and a mini-jet modification model description of the data are tested, providing further constraints on hadronization.

From 2011 in the NRC "Kurchatov Institute" carry out the dismantling of the MR multiloop research reactor. Now the reactor and all technological equipment in the premises of the reactor were dismantled. Now the measurements of radioactive contamination in the reactor premises are made. The most contaminated parts of premises - floor and the ground beneath it. To measure the distribution of specific activity in the ground the CdZnTe detector (volume 500MM3) was used. Detector placed in a lead shielding with a slit collimation hole. The upper part of shielding is made movable to close and open the slit of the collimator. At each point two measurements carried out: with open and closed collimator. The software for determination specific activity of radionuclides in ground was developed. The mathematical model of spectrometric system based on the Monte-Carlo method. Measurements of specific activity of ground were made. Using the results of measurements the thickness of the removed layer of ground and the amount of radioactive waste were calculated.

We present a general description as well as a sample of illustrative experimental results of the Tien Shan high altitude detector complex which is aimed for fundamental and applied investigations in different fields of astroparticle, atmospheric, and environmental physics. The unique natural conditions of the Tien Shan Mountain Scientific Station where this complex resides, the presence of a modern equipment, and the use of multi-messenger integrated approach by detection of various radiation types open a new stage of research in cosmic ray physics and high-energy atmospheric phenomena.

The development of lightweight protective structures of increased ballistic resistance is not an easy task, since often there are conflicting requirements in terms of cost, weight, thickness, materials availability, processability, etc. To assess the effectiveness of protective structures one should use methods that allow to research the obstacles destruction when collided with high-speed particles. The paper is devoted to the actual problem of studying the ballistic stability of thin barriers made of various protective materials (steel, titanium alloy, ceramics, metal ceramics) when interacting with a metal fragment simulator a spherical steel drummer in the range of interaction speeds of about 2500 m/s. An experimental technique has been developed to study the most important indicators: the depth of a crater in an obstacle, a fragment’s velocity drop when interacting with protection, the obstacle’s and splinter’s fragments scattering in overgraded space. Mathematical modeling was carried out within the framework of continuum mechanics, which adequately describes the interaction process of the drummer and the obstacle under various impact conditions.

Results of an experimental investigation related to near-field wing tip vortices are presented. The measurements were carried out using a PIV-system in T-1K wind tunnel of KNRTU-KAI. Q-criterion and crosssectional lines method were used to determine vortex core locations, which showed a good agreement. It is shown that the circulation of tip vortices remains constant at low to moderate angles of attack, and decreases in the stream-wise direction for higher angles of attack. It is also shown that the vortex core radius increases in the stream-wise direction, taking larger values at higher angles of attack.

In this paper the results of thermal-hydraulic tests of a sample of a perspective plate heat exchanger under the conditions of LBAHT is described. Working opportunity of the sample working under conditions of LBAHT has been confirmed by this research.

Experiments were carried out to study the contribution of the phonon wing to the uniform width of exciton states localized at room temperature on surface defects of the crystal lattice of thin single-layer and three-layer films. Technological studies were carried out to reproduce the parameters of a three-layer thin textured Si (P) / Si (B) / ZnO film to create a technology for the production of femtosecond time interval recorders based on the non-Faraday rotation of the polarized vector of the stimulated photon echo. The results of technological methods for studying the physics of the formation of trion states are discussed.

Observational evidence is presented for interaction between nonlinear internal Kelvin waves at the ωt,i (where the ωt is the semidiurnal frequency and the ωi is the inertial frequency) and random oscillations of the background coastal current at the sub-inertial Ω frequency in the Japan/East Sea. Enhanced coastal currents at the sum ω+ and difference ω-frequencies ω±=ωt,i ± Ω have properties of propagating Kelvin waves, which suggests permanent energy exchange from the sub-inertial band to the mesoscale ω± band. This interaction may be responsible for a greater-than-predicted intensification, steepening and breaking of boundary-trapped Kelvin waves. The problem of interaction between the nonlinear Kelvin wave at the frequency ω and the low-frequency narrowband noise with representative frequency Ω≪ω is investigated using the theory of nonlinear weak dispersion waves.

In some papers, dependences of the isobaric heat capacity of water versus pressure and temperature were obtained. It is shown that these dependences contradict both the dependence of heat capacity on temperature for supercooled water, and an important thermodynamic equation for the dependence of heat capacity on pressure. A possible explanation for this contradiction is proposed.

Helicity can lead to a reduction of turbulent dissipation in the atmosphere or in a specific constrained flow, e.g. in pipe. We use the TomoPIV data (42 cube of grid points, resolution 0.84 mm) to measure 3D velocity field of turbulent swirling flows. We study spatial distribution of the mean and fluctuating components of energy and helicity. We find that helical turbulence excitation and decay along stream of the jet strongly depend on the inflow swirl. We observe spatial separation of turbulent flow with different sign of helicity while integrated values are conserves. It is shown that large scale swirling flow induces helicity at the small scales. Our results bring valuable materials for benchmark the modern numerical simulations with turbulent closure technique.

Excited states in low-energy spectra in nuclei near 208Pb are considered. The pure (j = 9/2)n configuration approximation with delta-force is used for ground state multiplet calculations. The multiplet splitting is determined by the pairing energy, which can be defined from the even-odd straggering of the nuclear masses. For the configurations with more than two valence nucleons, the seniority scheme is used. The results of the calculations agree with the experimental data for both stable and exotic nuclei within 0.06-6.16%. Due to simplicity and absence of the fitted parameters, the model can be easily applied for studies of nature of the excited states in a wide range of nuclei.
