Abstract

The seismic assessment of historical masonry bell towers is of significant interest, particularly in Italy, due to their widespread presence and inherent vulnerability given by their slenderness. According to technical codes and standard practice, the seismic evaluation of masonry bell towers can be conducted using a range of methodologies that vary in their level of detail. This paper presents a case study of a historical masonry bell tower located in the Caserta Province (Italy). Extensive investigative efforts were undertaken to determine the tower’s key geometric and structural characteristics, as well as to document ongoing damage phenomena. The dynamic behavior of the tower was assessed through ambient vibration testing, which enabled the identification of the principal modal shapes and corresponding frequencies, also highlighting peculiar dynamical characteristics caused by the damage conditions. Subsequently, the seismic assessment was carried out using both Level 1 (simplified mechanical) and Level 2 (kinematic limit analysis) methodologies. This assessment helped identify the most probable collapse mechanisms and laid the foundation for employing more advanced methodologies to design necessary retrofitting interventions. The study emphasizes the importance of Level 2 analyses for structures where out-of-plane failure mechanisms are likely due to pre-existing cracking. Both approaches provide less-than-unity acceleration factors, ranging from 0.45 for Level 1 (assuming non-ductile behavior) to 0.59 for Level 2, in this case specifically using the information available about existing cracking pattern.

Abstract

The association between genetics and lifestyle factors is crucial when determining breast cancer susceptibility, a leading cause of deaths globally. This research aimed to compare the body mass index, smoking behavior, hormonal influences, and BRCA gene mutations between affected patients and healthy individuals, all with a family history of cancer. All these factors were then utilized as features to train a machine learning (ML) model to predict the risk of breast cancer development. Between 2020 and 2023, a total of 1389 women provided detailed lifestyle and risk factor data during visits to a familial cancer center in Italy. Descriptive and inferential statistics were assessed to explore the differences between the groups. Among the various classifiers used, the ensemble of decision trees was the best performer, with a 10-fold cross-validation scheme for training after normalizing the features. The performance of the model was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and its area under the curve (AUC), alongside the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and F1 score. Analysis revealed that individuals in the tumor group exhibited a higher risk profile when compared to their healthy counterparts, particularly in terms of the lifestyle and genetic markers. The ML model demonstrated predictive power, with an AUC of 81%, 88% sensitivity, 57% specificity, 78% accuracy, 80% precision, and an F1 score of 0.84. These metrics significantly outperformed traditional statistical prediction models, including the BOADICEA and BCRAT, which showed an AUC below 0.65. This study demonstrated the efficacy of an ML approach in identifying women at higher risk of breast cancer, leveraging lifestyle and genetic factors, with an improved predictive performance over traditional methods.

Abstract

The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. We also report argon purity and detector uniformity measurements and provide comparisons to detector simulations.

Abstract

About a hundred years ago, the Russian biologist A. Gurwitsch, based on experiments with onion plants by measuring their growth rate, hypothesized that plants emit a weak electromagnetic field that somehow influences cell growth. This interesting observation remained fundamentally ignored by the scientific community; only in the 1950s the electromagnetic emission from some plants was measured using a photomultiplier used in single counting mode. Later, in the 1980s, several groups around the world started extensive work to understand the origin and role of this ultraweak emission, now called biophotons, coming from living organisms. Biophotons are an endogenous very small production of photons in the visible energy range in and from cells and organisms, and this emission is characteristic of living organisms. Today, there is no doubt that biophotons exist, this emission has been measured by many groups and for many different living organisms, from humans to bacteria. However, the origin of biophotons and whether organisms use them to exchange information is not yet well understood; no model proposed to date is capable of reproducing and interpreting the great variety of experimental data coming from the many different living systems measured so far. In this brief review, we present our experimental work on the biophotons coming from germinating seeds, the main experimental results, and some new methods we are using to analyze the data to open the door for interpretative models of this phenomenon clarifying its function in the regulation and communication between cells and living organisms. We also discuss ideas on how to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the measured signal to open up new experimental possibilities that allow the measurement and the characterization of currently unmeasurable quantities.

Abstract

Since the 1980s, researchers have taken giant steps in understanding how to use quantum mechanics for solving real problems—for example, making a computer that works according to the laws of quantum mechanics. In recent decades, researchers have tried to develop a platform for quantum information and computation that can be integrated into digital and telecom technologies without the need of a cryogenic environment. The current status of research in the field of quantum integrated photonics will be reviewed. A review of the most common integrated photonic platforms will be given, together with the main achievements and results in the last decade.

Abstract

The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) describes signals detected with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo up to the end of their third observing run. Updating the previous GWTC-2.1, we present candidate gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences during the second half of the third observing run (O3b) between 1 November 2019, 15∶00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and 27 March 2020, 17∶00 UTC. There are 35 compact binary coalescence candidates identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p_{astro}>0.5. Of these, 18 were previously reported as low-latency public alerts, and 17 are reported here for the first time. Based upon estimates for the component masses, our O3b candidates with p_{astro}>0.5 are consistent with gravitational-wave signals from binary black holes or neutron-star–black-hole binaries, and we identify none from binary neutron stars. However, from the gravitational-wave data alone, we are not able to measure matter effects that distinguish whether the binary components are neutron stars or black holes. The range of inferred component masses is similar to that found with previous catalogs, but the O3b candidates include the first confident observations of neutron-star–black-hole binaries. Including the 35 candidates from O3b in addition to those from GWTC-2.1, GWTC-3 contains 90 candidates found by our analysis with p_{astro}>0.5 across the first three observing runs. These observations of compact binary coalescences present an unprecedented view of the properties of black holes and neutron stars.

Abstract

The utilization of hydrogen (H2) as a renewable and clean energy carrier, free from the reliance on fossil fuels, represents a significant technological challenge. The use of renewable energy sources for hydrogen production, such as photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water under solar radiation, has garnered significant interest. Indeed, the storage of hydrogen presents another hurdle to the ongoing advancement of hydrogen energy. Concerning solid-state hydrogen storage, magnesium hydride (MgH2) has emerged as a promising option due to its high capacity, excellent reversibility, and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, its storage performance needs improvement to make it suitable for practical applications. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has distinguished itself as the most extensively researched photocatalyst owing to its high photo-activity, good chemical and thermal stability, low toxicity, and affordability. This review highlights the application of TiO2 for hydrogen production under visible and solar light, with a particular focus both on its modification without the use of noble metals and its utilization as a catalyst to enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2.

Abstract

Biophotons are an ultra-weak emission of photons in the visible energy range from living matter. In this work, we study the emission from germinating seeds using an experimental technique designed to detect light of extremely small intensity. The emission from lentil seeds and single bean was analyzed during the whole germination process in terms of the different spectral components through low pass filters and the different count distributions in the various stages of the germination process. Although the shape of the emission spectrum appears to be very similar in the two samples used in our experiment, our analysis can highlight the differences present in the two cases. In this way, it was possible to correlate the various types of emissions to the degree of development of the seed during germination.

Abstract

The constant demand of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for different applications requires a new selection of solvents and reagents for their synthesis, to make them less toxic to living organisms and the environment. Among the alternative technologies that can be used to exclude the use of toxic products, green chemistry is based on the employment of biomolecules derived from plants or microorganisms to achieve NPs. Therefore, with the aim of applying the principles of circular economy, the waste deriving from the production of olive oil represents a useful source of polyphenols to be used as reduction agents to obtain AgNPs. In our work, we employed the Olive Mill Wastewater (OMWW), the so-called vegetation water typical of the Mediterranean geographical area, to achieve two sizes of AgNPs, i.e., 50 nm and 30 nm. These NPs were tested on the human monocytic cell line (THP-1) using two concentrations (3 µM and 5 µM) to understand their ability to trigger or not the inflammatory response. This was undertaken following IL-6, IL-8, IL-5 and TNF-α secretion and the NF-kB translocation. We concluded that the AgNPs did not induce strong activation of these pathways, especially when the cells were treated with higher dimensional NPs. Consequently, the application of these NPs in vivo for therapeutic purpose could be significant.

Abstract

We report on the population properties of compact binary mergers inferred from gravitational-wave observations of these systems during the first three LIGO-Virgo observing runs. The Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 3 (GWTC-3) contains signals consistent with three classes of binary mergers: binary black hole, binary neutron star, and neutron star–black hole mergers. We infer the binary neutron star merger rate to be between 10 and 1700 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1} and the neutron star–black hole merger rate to be between 7.8 and 140 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1}, assuming a constant rate density in the comoving frame and taking the union of 90% credible intervals for methods used in this work. We infer the binary black hole merger rate, allowing for evolution with redshift, to be between 17.9 and 44 Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} at a fiducial redshift (z=0.2). The rate of binary black hole mergers is observed to increase with redshift at a rate proportional to (1+z)^{κ} with κ=2.9_{-1.8}^{+1.7} for z≲1. Using both binary neutron star and neutron star–black hole binaries, we obtain a broad, relatively flat neutron star mass distribution extending from 1.2_{-0.2}^{+0.1} to 2.0_{-0.3}^{+0.3}M_{⊙}. We confidently determine that the merger rate as a function of mass sharply declines after the expected maximum neutron star mass, but cannot yet confirm or rule out the existence of a lower mass gap between neutron stars and black holes. We also find the binary black hole mass distribution has localized over- and underdensities relative to a power-law distribution, with peaks emerging at chirp masses of 8.3_{-0.5}^{+0.3} and 27.9_{-1.8}^{+1.9}M_{⊙}. While we continue to find that the mass distribution of a binary’s more massive component strongly decreases as a function of primary mass, we observe no evidence of a strongly suppressed merger rate above approximately 60M_{⊙}, which would indicate the presence of a upper mass gap. Observed black hole spins are small, with half of spin magnitudes below χ_{i}≈0.25. While the majority of spins are preferentially aligned with the orbital angular momentum, we infer evidence of antialigned spins among the binary population. We observe an increase in spin magnitude for systems with more unequal-mass ratio. We also observe evidence of misalignment of spins relative to the orbital angular momentum.

Abstract

We report on gravitational-wave discoveries from compact binary coalescences detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo in the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between 1 April 2019 15∶00 UTC and 1 October 2019 15∶00 UTC. By imposing a false-alarm-rate threshold of two per year in each of the four search pipelines that constitute our search, we present 39 candidate gravitational-wave events. At this threshold, we expect a contamination fraction of less than 10%. Of these, 26 candidate events were reported previously in near-real time through gamma-ray coordinates network notices and circulars; 13 are reported here for the first time. The catalog contains events whose sources are black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8, as well as events whose components cannot be unambiguously identified as black holes or neutron stars. For the latter group, we are unable to determine the nature based on estimates of the component masses and spins from gravitational-wave data alone. The range of candidate event masses which are unambiguously identified as binary black holes (both objects ≥3 M_{⊙}) is increased compared to GWTC-1, with total masses from approximately 14 M_{⊙} for GW190924_021846 to approximately 150 M_{⊙} for GW190521. For the first time, this catalog includes binary systems with significantly asymmetric mass ratios, which had not been observed in data taken before April 2019. We also find that 11 of the 39 events detected since April 2019 have positive effective inspiral spins under our default prior (at 90% credibility), while none exhibit negative effective inspiral spin. Given the increased sensitivity of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, the detection of 39 candidate events in approximately 26 weeks of data (approximately 1.5 per week) is consistent with GWTC-1.

12. Nano-indentation mechanical characterizations of solution processed inorganic metal oxide thin films and influence of grain size

Abstract

Aluminum-doped zinc oxide thin films were prepared by solution synthesis where molarity concentrations and mixing ratios for oxide and dopant sources were changed while deposition and pre- and post-deposition annealing steps remained the same. Post-deposition high-temperature annealing is known to improve conductivity and transparency but may deteriorate the mechanical characteristics of films. However, we report the successful preparation of thin films with high mechanical hardness (>11 MPa) and reduced modulus (>102 MPa) along with high electro-optical characteristics even after multiple annealing steps. Changes in grain sizes because of changes in molarity concentrations and difference of atomic radii caused mechanical characteristics of films. Both regular and inverse Hall–Petch relations were observed.

Abstract

We studied the growth and oxidation of niobium nitride (NbN) films that we used to fabricate superconductive tunnel junctions. The thin films were deposited by dc reactive magnetron sputtering using a mixture of argon and nitrogen. The process parameters were optimized by monitoring the plasma with an optical spectroscopy technique. This technique allowed us to obtain NbN as well as good quality AlN films and both were used to obtain NbN/AlN/NbN trilayers. Lift-off lithography and selective anodization of the NbN films were used, respectively, to define the main trilayer geometry and/or to separate electrically, different areas of the trilayers. The anodized films were characterized by using Auger spectroscopy to analyze compounds formed on the surface and by means of a nano-indenter in order to investigate its mechanical and adhesion properties. The transport properties of NbN/AlN/NbN Josephson junctions obtained as a result of the above described fabrication process were measured in liquid helium at 4.2 K.

Abstract

The optical absorption and fluorescence of silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) are widely exploited in many different application fields such as sensors, bio-imaging, drug delivery, etc. In the sensor field, optical devices are highly versatile thanks to their ease of fabrication and low costs and, therefore, are optimal candidates to replace expensive apparatuses commonly used. In this study, we synthesized AgNCs in aqueous phase by photochemical synthesis using poly methacrylic acid (PMAA) as a stabilizer. Colloidal water solutions of these NCs showed a very good sensitivity to Pb(II) ions, and in order to fabricate a solid-state sensor, we introduced them in a hydrogel material formed by poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate with a molecular weight of 700 g/mol (PEGDA700). The systems were characterized using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Finally, the sensitivity to Pb(II) ions has been tested with the aim to use these systems as solid-state optical sensors for water quality.

Abstract

We study the emission of photons from germinating seeds using an experimental technique designed to detect light of extremely small intensity. We analyze the dark count signal without germinating seeds as well as the photon emission during the germination process. The technique of analysis adopted here, called diffusion entropy analysis (DEA) and originally designed to measure the temporal complexity of astrophysical, sociological and physiological processes, rests on Kolmogorov complexity. The updated version of DEA used in this paper is designed to determine if the signal complexity is generated either by non-ergodic crucial events with a non-stationary correlation function or by the infinite memory of a stationary but non-integrable correlation function or by a mixture of both processes. We find that dark count yields the ordinary scaling, thereby showing that no complexity of either kinds may occur without any seeds in the chamber. In the presence of seeds in the chamber anomalous scaling emerges, reminiscent of that found in neuro-physiological processes. However, this is a mixture of both processes and with the progress of germination the non-ergodic component tends to vanish and complexity becomes dominated by the stationary infinite memory. We illustrate some conjectures ranging from stress induced annihilation of crucial events to the emergence of quantum coherence.

Abstract

Due their excellent chemo-physical properties and ability to exhibit surface plasmon resonance, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have become a material of choice in various applications, such as nanosensors, electronic devices, nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine. In particular, from the environmental monitoring perspective, sensors based on silver nanoparticles are in great demand because of their antibacterial and inexpensive synthetic method. In the present study, we synthesized AgNPs in water phase using silver nitrate as precursor molecules, hydrophilic thiol (3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt, 3MPS) and sodium borohydride as capping and reducing agents, respectively. The AgNPs were characterized using techniques such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential (ζ-potential) measurements and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Further, to demonstrate the environmental application of our AgNPs, we also applied them for heavy metal sensing by detecting visible color modification due to SPR spectral changes. We found that these negatively charged AgNPs show good response to nickel (II) and presented good sensibility properties for the detection of low amount of ions in water in the working range of 1.0–0.1 ppm.

Abstract

The use of titanium dioxide (TiO2) within two specific classes of devices, namely electrochromic and photoelectrochromic, is described hereafter, with respect to its inherent properties and chromogenic features within architectures that have appeared so far, in this field. The new research trends, involving the applications of TiO2 in chromogenic materials are reported, with particular attention paid to the techniques used for film deposition as well as the synthesis of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the main studies concerning its chemical-physical properties and approaches to its chemical syntheses and fabrication are reviewed, with special regard to “green” routes. In addition, the main aspects relating to toxicological profiles are exposed, with reference to nanoparticles and thin films.

Abstract

Proton range verification by ionoacoustic wave sensing is a technique under development for applications in adron therapy as an alternative to nuclear imaging. It provides an acoustic imaging of the proton energy deposition vs. depth using the acoustic wave Time of Flight (ToF). State-of-the-art (based on simulations and experimental results) points out that this detection technique achieves better spatial resolution (< 1 mm) of the proton range comparing with Positron-Emission-Tomography (PET) and prompt gamma ray techniques. This work presents a complete Geant4/k-Wave model that allows to understand several physical phenomena and to evaluate the key parameters that affect the acoustic field generated by the incident proton radiation.

Abstract

Oncological hadron therapy utilizes a beam of charged particles to destroy the tumor cells, exploiting the particular deposition curve that allow minimum damage to the surrounding healty tissues compared to traditional radiotherapy. Sulak and Hayakawa’s works have shown the applicability of this technique in clinical scenarios, but the lack of dedicated electronics for this type of experiments affects the spatial resolution that can be obtained with this technique [1]. This work presents an integrated analog front-end dedicated to ionoacoustic experiments that allows to estimate the position of the Bragg Peak with an average deviation of 1% with respect to the real position.

Abstract

Strain related phenomena in materials showing the Portevin Le Chatelier (PLC) effect are investigated when subjected to loading conditions both in elastic and in plastic field. Two experimental techniques for strain measurements are compared, thermography and optical strain measurement, both non contact, non destructive and full field. Two materials have been tensile tested with several test speeds. Each specimen has been observed and test evolution has contemporaneously been acquired with both video and thermotracer. Each test has been repeated several times. Aim of this research is to investigate how these experimental techniques may quantitatively describe the above described phenomena. Experimental data are useful to calibrate models describing the mechanical behaviour of materials (i.e. constitutive laws, damage models, etc.) and to focus phenomena which take place during load and corresponding strain phases.
