Electrically-contacted optical gap antennas are nanoscale interface devices enabling the transduction between photons and electrons. This new generation of device, usually constituted of metal elements (e.g. gold), captures visible to near infrared electromagnetic radiation and rectifies the incident energy in a direct-current (DC) electrical signal. However, light absorption by the metal may lead to additional thermal effects which need to be taken into account to understand the complete photo-response of the devices. The purpose of this communication is to discriminate the contribution of laser-induced thermo-electric effects in the photo-assisted electronic transport. We show case our analysis with the help of electromigrated devices.

Micro-ring resonators made of titanium dioxide were decorated with local light sources comprising CdSe/CdS colloidal quantum dot aggregates. The active micro-resonators are operated to achieve efficient evanescent excitation of nearby co-planar integrated waveguides. Coupled-mode analysis and numerical simulations are used to capture the dynamic of the optical interaction between locally activated resonators and integrated waveguides. In this context, we exemplify the key role of resonator intrinsic loss. Next, we show that locally activated or bus-waveguide excited resonators are in optimum waveguide interaction for the same so-called critical coupling condition, although the physical origin of this property is different for each configuration. More importantly, we found that a locally activated resonator is a fabrication imperfection tolerant configuration for the coupling light of local sources into waveguides. This remarkable property originates from the opposite change of the power cycling into the resonator and the waveguide coupling efficiency as a function of the resonator-waveguide separation gap. By operating an 8-μm-radius ring resonator with loaded quality factors around Q = 2100, we experimentally demonstrate a 5.5-dB enhancement of the power coupled into the output waveguide compared to a direct local source waveguide excitation.

In contrast to the high performances of long-range, high-speed optical information transfer, optical information processing remains outperformed by electronic microprocessing. The two mains reasons are the lack of gain medium that hampers the development of an optical analogue of the transistor and the lack of compactness of the approaches proposed so far. Here, we demonstrate a new concept of the design of all-optical elementary computing units based on the shaping of plasmonic modal landscape in micrometric on-chip 2D cavities to realize reconfigurable Arithmetic and Logic Units (ALU). Our interconnect-free devices perform multi-bit logic gate functions in a single cavity without ALU cascading, therefore obviating loss in vias and so the need for gain to restore the binary signal. Moreover, an astute cavity design allows to reconfigure a single cavity into multiple logic functions, including a first full adder. The main challenge on the way to increasing the functional Boolean complexity is the design of the cavity shape and of the excitation/detection parameters for which an approach based on artificial intelligence will be implemented.

ITO is a transparent conductive material commonly used in everyday life and for its potential in material research. In nonlinear optics for instance, ITO has shown great capabilities for harmonic generation in its epsilon-near-zero configuration. In this article, we demonstrate a completely new nonlinear behaviour from ITO thin layers. After a Ga-Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling of the thin film, we observe nonlinear photoluminescence produced for tightly focused femtosecond pulses. The signal shares strong similarities with that commonly detected from noble metals. We show that the arising of this nonlinear photoluminescence originates from the radiative decay of metal-like hot electron distribution in the material and is associated to a modification of the optical properties by the Ga ions.

Memristive devices are an emerging new type of devices operating at the scale of a few or even single atoms. They largely exploited for emulating the electrical function of synapses and are thus currently investigated for performing in-memory and neuromorphic computing. In this contribution, we report the obser-vation of a novel feature in these devices. We show that memristors can also emit photons during their activity. We identified three mechanisms producing photons with vastly different properties. The crossover between emission regimes depends on the history of the memristor and its operating conductance. Our results suggests that this new generation of memristor pave the way for multidimensional neural networks using both electrons and photons as information carrier.

We observe anomalous visible to near-infrared electromagnetic emission from electrically driven atomic-size point contacts. We show that the number of photons released strongly depends on the quantized conductance steps of the contact. Counterintuitively, the light intensity features an exponential decay dependence with the injected electrical power. We propose an analytical model for the light emission considering an out-of-equilibrium electron distribution. We treat photon emission as a Bremsstrahlung process resulting from hot electrons colliding with the metal boundary, and find qualitative accord with the experimental data.

We propose an original concept for on-chip excitation and amplification of surface plasmon polaritons. Our approach, named nanoresotron, utilizes the collective effect of dissipative instability of a 2D direct current flowing in vicinity of a metal surface. The instability arises through the excitation of self-consistent plasma oscillations and results in the creation of a pair of collective surface electromagnetic modes in addition to conventional plasmon resonances. We derive the dispersion equations for these modes using self-consistent solutions of Maxwell’s and 2D hydrodynamics equations. We find that the phase velocities of these new collective modes are close to the drift velocity of 2D electrons. We demonstrate that the slow mode is amplified while the fast mode exhibits absorption. Estimates indicate that very high gain are attainable, which makes the nanoresotron a promising scheme to electrically excite and regenerate surface plasmon polaritons.

Electrically biased metal nanostructures are at the core of innovative multifunctional integrated devices that control the flow of electrons and photons at the nanoscale. They are based on plasmonic structures that create strongly confined fields, typically associated with large temperature gradients. These thermal effects may generate artifact responses detrimental to the desired operation. We show here how a biasing polarity and a local optical excitation asymmetry of a generic geometry – a nanoscale constriction – interplay thermally to modify the diffusive electron transport in out-of-equilibrium conditions. Our experimental results are accompanied with computational electromagnetism and multiphysics simulations.
