The article presents a comparative study that determines the olfactory detection of four CD-I mice and spider monkeys with six alkylpyrazines using a conditioning paradigm. It mentions that with six stimuli, the animals detected concentrations of less than or equal to 0.1 parts per million (ppm) from odorless solvent and in three of the six stimuli the animals were even able to recognize concentrations of less than or equal to 0.1 parts per billion (ppb). The results indicates that CD-I mice are more sensitive than spider monkeys with five of the six alkylpyrazines tested. Further, the study suggests that neither the number of functional olfactory receptor genes nor the absolute or the relative size of the olfactory bulbs of the species reliably predict their olfactory sensitivity.
