The objective of this work is to discuss the paleoenvironment and age of the Los Monos Formation, in outcrop and subsurface, along a regional transect (west-east) in the southern sector of the Tarija basin. The lithofacies and ichnofacies of the Alarache, Angosto del Pescado and Balapuca outcrops and core-intervals of the Aguas Blancas xp-13, Ramos x-12, Tartagal x-1 and Tonono x-1 boreholes were analyzed. The definition of lithofacies and ichnofacies allowed us to interpret a shallow to deep marine paleoenvironment (from the offshore-transition, offshore and shelf). Towards the top of the Tonono Formation, the equivalent of the Los Monos Formation in the Chaco-Salteño was defined as a brackish-waters marginal-marine paleoenvironment. The mineralogy of the mentioned sections plus the Vespucio x-1 borehole was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thus the majority elements in clay minerals were also determined from EDAX. Authigenic and detrital clays from SEM-EDAX were recognized. Four clay mineral assemblages were defined (I+Ch; Ch+I; I+K; K+I), where I+K and K+I assemblages characterize the transgressive events within the basin. The palynofacies of the Balapuca, Alarache and Angosto del Pescado outcrops and samples from the Ramos xp-1002, Ramos xp-1011 and Ramos xp-1012 boreholes were defined, the dominance of terrestrial palynomorphs was recognized with variable participation of marine palynomorphs, according to a shallow marine paleoenvironment with shoreline shifts. Two transgressive events were identified during the late Eifelian-early Givetian and the late Givetian-early Frasnian, which are characterized by an increase in marine components and clay assemblages of I+K and K+I. The palynological associations pont to a late Eifelian-early to middle Givetian age for the Los Monos Formation in the study area. The analysis of illite crystallinity and expansive layers in the mixed-layer IS determined advanced diagenesis for the unit, from late mesodiagenesis (Tonono x-1 and Vespucio x-1) to telodiagenesis (Balapuca and Ramos), according to the final stage of oil generation window to gas generation window, respectively. Finally, based on the mineral composition with a predominance of quartz (>70% in average) and low content of clays (100 km2), the unit has some of the attributes to be considered as a shale-type unconventional reservoir. The palynological content from the Cerro La Chilca and Quebrada Ancha sections of the Wenlock? to Přídolí Los Espejos Formation, in the Argentinean Precordillera is studied. The marine palynomorphs exhibit higher relative abundance and diversity in almost all the productive samples, except for the uppermost ones from both sections, in coincidence with the shift towards more proximal facies in this part. The Los Espejos Formation yielded a total of 114 species of marine organic walled-phytoplankton, 52 species of miospores and two non-marine phytoplankton species. The lower part of the Los Espejos Formation, dated as Ludfordian, displays the highest phytoplankton diversity and the better-preserved palynomorphs of the studied samples in both sections. Diversity tends to diminish towards the upper part of the Los Espejos Formation, dated as late Ludfordian–Přídolí, in coincidence with the transition to storm-dominated shelf and shoreface environments and subaerial exposures that probably hinder the preservation of palynomorphs. Comparisons with coeval phytoplankton assemblages from Gondwana and other palaeoplates such as Laurentia, Baltica, and Avalonia result in strong similarities, which suggest a cosmopolitan distribution pattern during the Ludlow and the Přídolí. Conversely, the trilete spores display more similarities with those from Gondwana and thus suggest a lesser dispersive potential in comparison to phytoplankton. La aparición de plantas terrestres es uno de los hechos más significativos en la historia de nuestro planeta. No solo fue un hito fundamental en la evolución de la vida: marcó además el inicio de decisivos cambios ecológicos, pues favoreció la formación de suelos, modificó profundamente el ciclo del carbono y alteró la composición de la atmósfera, con la consecuente transformación irreversible del clima global. Estos cambios permitieron que la evolución produjera otros organismos más complejos, que irían ocupando todos los continentes. Las primitivas plantas que se afincaron fuera del agua probablemente descendieron de un grupo de algas multicelulares verdes que habitaban aguas dulces y que habrían migrado a ambientes terrestres, en los cuales sobrevivieron y proliferaron. No se han encontrado restos fósiles de ellas ya que, sin tallo ni raíces o partes leñosas, habrían sido demasiado frágiles para soportar los procesos de fosilización. Podemos suponer, sin embargo, que habrían sido similares a las pequeñas y simples hepáticas actuales. El camino que permitió adquirir conocimiento sobre estas primeras plantas es el estudio de restos de organismos microscópicos contenidos en las rocas, del que se ocupa la palinología, una disciplina que hizo grandes avances desde mediados del siglo XX. Entre esos restos están las esporas y los granos de polen (denominados genéricamente palinomorfos) producidos en grandes cantidades por todas las plantas terrestres como parte de su función reproductiva. Esporas y granos de polen tienen una pared gruesa que, durante su dispersión por el viento o por corrientes de agua, los protege de la radiación ultravioleta y de la desecación. Cuando terminan incorporados a los sedimentos inorgánicos, esa pared soporta el proceso de fosilización, por el que pueden permanecer inalterados por millones de años. The oldest seed occurrences in Western Gondwana have been recognized in a new stratigraphic section located in Western Argentina (Precordillera Basin). Palynological evidence indicates an Early Mississippian (probably Tournaisian) age for this new succession. The two identified early seeds generas, Pseudosporogonites cf. hallei and Warsteinia sancheziae n. sp. were up to now considered as restricted to the Devonian of Laurussia. This finding suggests a dispersal of earliest spermatophytes between Laurussia and Gondwana during Devonian/Tournaisian times, thus accounting for the Rheic Ocean as a surmountable biogeographic barrier for continental biotas. Alternatively, contrasting biogeographic hypotheses dealing with early spermatophytes rising in paleotropics and then displacing herbaceous communities of non-spermatophytes typical from cool high latitudinal regions, are explored for explaining the recognized paleobiogeographical pattern. The new information supports a weak impact of the Devonian/Carboniferous biotic crisis on earliest seed plant diversity. Based on preliminary evidences of niches differentiation and ecological dynamics probably affected by wildfires, Tournaisian Gondwanan plant communities from high latitudes are interpreted as being more complex than previously thought, and more similar to those reported from Laurussia. In addition, their discovery in a sedimentary environment associated to glacigenic deposits, show that this new record might be linked to the coeval glacial age widely recorded elsewhere in Gondwana. Marine phytoplankton from the Late Cambrian are described for the first time in the Eastern Cordillera of northwest Argentina. The acritarch assemblage was recovered from an offshore lower mudstone unit towards the base of the Casa Colorada Member (Santa Rosita Formation) in the Quebrada de Moya section, Jujuy Province. The presence of Vulcanisphaera africana, Saharidia fragilis, Granomarginata squamacea and Celtiberium sp. 1, together with the absence of Tremadocian acritarch species and the scarcity and low diversity of diacrodian acritarchs suggest an age not younger than Late Cambrian for this acritarch assemblage. Although acritarchs have been studied mostly for stratigraphic purposes (often in sediments devoid of other fossils), their biostratigraphic potential has not yet been fully exploited in the Ordovician. While another group of palynomorphs, the chitinozoans, have become increasingly important in international correlations, the acritarchs continue to play a minor role in Ordovician biostratigraphy. Today, about 1000 papers deal with Ordovician acritarchs, most of which are published by scientists working in Europe. The geographical areas studied in detail are in Europe and North Africa (Servais et al., in press). Investigations of Laurentian acritarchs are generally limited to the upper Middle Ordovician and the Upper Ordovician. Apart from two publications with detailed descriptions, studies from Australia are almost non–existant. In recent years, an increasing number of investigations have been carried out in China (Li et al., 2002) and South America (e.g., Rubinstein and Toro, 2001). However, at a global scale, many areas remain almost unstudied. Palaeobiogeographically, two distinct geographic acritarch assemblages can be recognized in the Lower–Middle Ordovician. A first assemblage (also named "province"), in the upper Tremadocian in low latitude areas, was attributed to warm–water environments, and a second assemblage, successively named "Mediterranean" or "peri–Gondwanan province", can easily be recognized around the southern border of Gondwana, from Argentina through north Africa and peri–Gondwana to Iran, Pakistan and southern China (Vavrdová, 1974; Li and Servais, 2002). Over 250 genera and over 1500 species of Ordovician acritarchs have been described so far (Servais et al., in press). Among the more than 500 acritarch species described from peri–Gondwana, some may be used as stratigraphical index taxa and may be helpful in the recognition and correlation of the Global Stage boundaries in the Lower and Middle Ordovician. The first appearance datum (FAD) of some 17 taxa, the taxonomy of which has been thoroughly reviewed in recent years, are plotted in this study against the British and Chinese graptolite zonations (Figure 1), following similar treatment of the FADs of 8 taxa by Brocke et al. (1995). The last appearance datum (LAD) of these taxa is more problematical, as palynomorphs of the size of the acritarchs may be reworked into younger sediments. LADs may be suggested with confidence in some instances, but only after a consistent pattern of occurrence has been determined from large data sets. Fil: Li, Jun.
