The present study seeks to investigate the use of husbandry waste and sawdust in the construction of degradable pots as a suitable alternative to plastic pots. Six mixture ratios of cattle manure and sawdust (85:15, 80:20, 75:25, 70:30, 65:35, and 60:40) were used along with three types of natural binders (sheep's wool, cornstarch, and sheep's wool:cornstarch) in phase I of the project. Phase I was replicated in triplicate to identify the best composition for each binding agent. International standards dictate that evaluations of biological pots include investigations into thickness swelling, internal bonding, and water absorption. Mean comparison of the resultant factorial data using the Tukey and TOPSIS methods indicated that production of bio-pots with a mixture of 80% manure and 20% sawdust may provide the best results for all three pot types. Phase II of the project involved using field experiments and cultivation of tomato plants in direct comparison to a commercial sample pot. The optimal pots for each binding agent in phase I were used in the evaluation. Field tests showed pots produced with 80% manure and 20% sawdust using cornstarch for binding adhesion performed best in terms of degradability and physical and mechanical properties.

This study investigates the performance of a combined anaerobic-aerobic system in the treatment of leachate within 5 months. Experiments were carried out in a two-stage anaerobic completely stirred tank reactor followed by an aerobic reactor with effective volumes of 10, 30, and 14 L at a constant rate of 2 L/day. The reactors were placed in series so that the output from the first anaerobic reactor was the input for the second one, and the output from the second reactor was connected to the input of the aerobic phase. After an initiation phase, the organic loading rate (OLR) was increased from 0.55 to 2.65 kg COD/m3. day. The optimum OLR was found to be 2.05 kg COD/m3. day at which, the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the two-stage anaerobic phase, the aerobic phase, and the treatment system as a whole were 93%, 37.1%, and 95.6%, respectively. The BOD5 removal efficiency of the system was 96.8%. The coefficients of determination between the removed COD and produced biogas were 0.98 and 0.99. Although the two-stage anaerobic phase increased the levels of ammonia nitrogen, alkalinity and turbidity by 31.28%, 15.18%, and 18.7%, the aerobic phase reduced these parameters by 50.30%, 57.23%, and 72.1%, respectively.

Large quantities of seaweed in marine environments and coastal areas can cause serious hygienic and environmental problems. Anaerobic digestion (AD) could provide a solution and could also be useful for the production of bioenergy and fertilizer. However, the AD of algae biomass has some limitations and further work is required on the process. To increase the efficiency of the process, batches of 350 mL feedstock containing seaweed biomass (Sargassum sp.), inoculum, and different dosages of sludge from drinking water treatment (DWTS) as a micronutrient source to improve biogas production were digested in a 500 mL glass reactor and under mesophilic conditions, leading to significantly enhanced methane production. The highest methane yield (199 NmL g−1 VS) was observed when 6 mg L−1 DWTS was added, which showed a 30% improvement compared with the control digester and accounted for a 249.4 kWh increase in net energy per ton. The biodegradability index also increased by 10% compared with the control after the addition of DWTS.

In international development programs on improvement of energy supply for cooking in remote regions, biomass gasifier cook stoves have a remarkable place. Fuel type and size play a key role on the performance of such stoves. The most abundant woody biomass waste in Iran is apple pruning waste (up to 1.32 Mt a year). This paper reports the result of evaluation of a top lit updraft biomass stove specifically modified to burn apple pruning waste. In addition, the improved biomass cooking stove (ICS) was technically compared with traditional cook stove (TCS) based on Water Boiling Test 4.2.3 and time to boil (TTB) instruction. Water and flame temperature variations were compared with a natural gas stove (GS), as the most common cooking device in Iran. The average TTB was 12, 13, and 20 min for the GS, ICS, and TCS, respectively. The comparison of regression equations indicated that the rate of increase in the flame and water temperature in the both ICS and GS were similar. In general, better thermal efficiency was observed in the ICS (about 35%) in comparison with the TCS (12.6%). The specific and the total fuel consumption in the ICS were 73 and 67% lower than that of the TCS, respectively. Keywords: Biomass waste, Thermal efficiency, Firewood, Regression model

A large number of biogas plants feeding with municipal solid waste (MSW) are installed throughout the world. However, researches are widely conducted with the aim of maximizing the process yield, in order to make it more comparable with fossil fuels. In the present paper, biomethane potential test (BMP) assays (37 °C) were conducted to maximize the biomethane production from anaerobic digestion (AD) of municipal solid waste (MSW) under different mixing ratios with sewage sludge (SS) (50:50, 60:40, 80:20, and 90:10), the total solid (TS) concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%), and pretreatment with sodium hydroxide. Increase in SS ratio up to 40% led to a substantial increase in biomethane yield. After 18 days of retention time, 90% of the methane (280 NmL/g VS) was achieved. The results showed that the methane yield in liquid anaerobic digestion (L-AD) (5%-10% TS) was greater than high-solids anaerobic digestion (HS-AD) (15%-20% TS). Biomethane yield was increased up to 18% with sodium hydroxide pretreatment. The findings shows that such optimization framework can generally increase the biomethane yield up to 57%.

Anaerobic degradation of bioplastics is a controversial challenge. Size reduction is a must for degradation while it requires a significant amount of energy, which lowers the overall energy efficiency of the system. On the other hand, inoculum to substrate ratio has interaction effects in the process. The present work aimed to optimize these two parameters for the improvement of energy efficiency through response surface methodology. The central composite design procedure was implied. The levels of the experimental variables were 0.72, 4.3, 7.87 mm for particle size and 2, 3, and 4 for inoculum to substrate ratio. The input variable effects on biomethane yield were estimated, discussed, and then also optimized using the genetic algorithm. Moreover, energy balance analysis was done for the samples. The highest biomethane yield was found at the particle size of 4.3 mm and inoculum to substrate ratio of 4, which corresponds to 23% energy efficiency. Despite the high energy consumption for size reduction to less than 1 mm, more biomethane yield was not observed. Inoculum to substrate ratio showed more effect on biomethane yield than particle size.

The effect of drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS) as a mixture additive, on biogas and methane production from food waste was studied. Mesophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste with 5 concentrations of DWTS (0, 2, 6, 12, and 18 ppm) was carried out. It was found that DWTS can significantly enhance biogas and methane yield. The highest biogas (671 Nml/g VS) as well as methane yield (522 Nml/g VS) was observed when 6 mg/kg DWTS was added. This is equal to 65 and 58 percent increase in comparison with the control digester. The calculated lag time for methane was found to be in between 3.3 and 4.7 days. The DWTS also reduced the lag phase and retention time. The biogas experimental data was fitted with the modified Gompertz and the first-order kinetic models with R2 higher than 0.994 and 0.949, respectively. The ratio of the experimental biogas production to the theoretical biogas production (ɛ) for control sample was 0.53 while for other samples containing additive were higher than 0.78.
