This article scrutinizes the often forced collaboration between the arts sector and urban development. Despite prevailing narratives that cast artists’ involvement positively in urban revitalization, this global trend, integral to creative city policies for urban development, conceals complexities. Highlighting how these seemingly cooperative practices are rehearsed in global cities and replicated in peripheral cities such as Brisbane, Australia, this examination has been largely prompted by the 2020 sale of the Metro Arts building in Brisbane. The location of this multi-arts institution was an incredibly valuable asset in a city that aims to promote its creative city credentials. Moreover, despite the substantial public investment in Metro Arts’ building, its sale was misrepresented as a private matter. A close examination of this event reveals the ways property developers can be tremendously influential upon the arts and cultural sector—what, where and how art is commissioned and displayed, and ultimately, what is publicly funded. This article demonstrates how tech professionals commuting to neighbourhoods redeveloped for their work are contributing to their transformation into urban tech campuses: gentrified districts where landscapes, understandings of place and temporalities are shaped by their praise of innovation, emotional detachment from place, and daily ebb and flow. While also resulting in displacement, othering, and the rewriting of histories and geographies, commuters' contribution to tech-led gentrification contrasts with the emotional investment into place and the sense of permanence gentrifiers use in established residential neighbourhoods they perceive as authentic and progressively remake in their image. While concomitant, it also differs from residential new-build gentrification, as it reinforces not only middle-class norms but also the economic discourse of the high-tech industry, which co-produces these places as elite worker oases. Using South Lake Union, Seattle, WA as a case study, this article aims to contribute to a social understanding of tech-led gentrification: while recent research has focused on residential gentrifiers and on the macro political and economic forces that transform declining urban areas into so-called innovation districts, this qualitative study explores gentrification through the narratives and uses of public space of an urban tech campus's dominant population – an elite, predominantly young, white, male commuter workforce several times larger than the local residential population. Adapting urban spaces to the impacts of climate change is one of today's key challenges, especially when it comes to avoiding the associated social trade-offs which are often overlooked in planning and policy regulation. Based on a review of existing policy and legal documents from Vienna, we analyse how mitigation of green gentrification is already included in Viennese urban planning and policy, and how the administration tries to manage it strategically. Results show that while risks are generally limited, current policy and planning strategies show no awareness of the emerging risks of green gentrification as unintended consequences. After declining from historically high levels following the Great Recession, homelessness in the United States is again on the rise due to an increase in the prevalence of unsheltered homelessness, and homeless encampments in public spaces such as parks. As such, there is significant interest in understanding opinion regarding community park agency activities intended to support unhoused users. Unfortunately, these actions and investments may also contribute to the process of environmental gentrification. In this note we use structural equation modeling of survey responses to examine how beliefs about the gentrification process influence public attitudes toward park and recreation agency activities intended to support people experiencing homelessness. Gentrification beliefs were significantly related to attitudes toward both housing-related and service-related agency activities. Managers and other decision makers should consider the potential impact of agency activities on the gentrification process, and seek to understand stakeholder attitudes toward gentrification as a phenomenon. This article diagnoses a novel problem with gentrification: that it can hinder valuable forms of everyday democratic communication. In order to make this argument, I develop a democratic interpretation of Iris Marion Young's 'ideal of city life', according to which social differentiation is valuable because of the epistemic role that it plays in the production and circulation of diverse social perspectives. I then leverage that ideal to examine two kinds of spatial and demographic changes associated with gentrification: community disintegration in enclaves and homogenisation in public spaces. I argue that community disintegration in enclaves can make the production of social perspectives within disadvantaged communities more difficult. I then argue that homogenisation in public spaces can undermine the role of such spaces as sites of democratic performance for the wider circulation of social perspectives in the public sphere. One Kensington Gardens is a large nine-storey luxury apartment building on High Street Kensington. Rarely are there any lights on. The building exemplifies the many buy-to-leave homes in Kensington and Chelsea, the richest local authority in the UK. Looking at these homes from the perspective of residents and councillors who live and work in the borough, I explore how buy-to-leave housing hollows out community, increases the cost of living, sanitises public space, and results in exclusionary and physical displacement. I also identify what role the local authority has in the process of financialising housing in the borough, including how councillors work with developers to make decisions that do not meet the needs of the residents they have been elected to serve. By concentrating on the voice of residents, I show how buy-to-leave homes reinforces the super-gentrification of the borough and becomes another form of gentrification that contributes to displacement. Gentrification has become one of the planetary processes in reorganising urban spaces. China is not immune to the process. Generations of scholarship on gentrification in China have generated considerable insights into its varying logics, morphologies and mechanism in the Chinese context. Yet, most research tends to focus on a geographically well‐demarcated area, driven either by the state or capital, while overlooking the externalities of these projects over time. Through the notion of the rent gap and the empirical case of Taikoo Li in Chengdu, we develop the new dynamic formation of the rent gap theoretical framework to explain how a commercial gentrification project changed the urban centre space and trigger new rounds of the effects of gentrification in surrounding neighbourhoods. Recent research in Latin America, and our own analysis of Brazilian cities, indicate that aspects of rent gap theory – in particular, the assumption that strong links exist between rent gaps and gentrification – do not fully account for observed empirical conditions. Drawing on Milton Santos' theory of "two circuits" of urban economies in the global South, we seek to develop an expanded framework better suited to explaining the Latin American context. Specifically, we argue that important socio‐spatial processes combine to embed what Santos called the "lower circuit" in certain parts of the city. This "territorialisation" of space by the lower circuit impedes the entry of the upper circuit, thus constraining expected rent gap capture and gentrification. We argue that only by taking both circuits into account, and considering how they become territorialised in urban space, can we properly grasp the relationship between rent gaps and gentrification in Latin American cities. In this article, the ways murals can become symbols of both heritage and divisive gentrification processes are analyzed in the context of the contemporary media city. Taking the case of Detroit, USA, how is the urban imaginary of the "music city" mediated through street art, and its meaning reconstituted and reframed in the contemporary networked mediasphere? Applying a cultural justice perspective, a selection of Detroit music murals, their Instagram lives, and the public debates surrounding three specific street art projects are analyzed along (1) the symbologies of place the murals represent, (2) the historiographies of space attached to the murals, (3) the social ties and community networks that keep the murals in place or protest their presence. This study shows that the proposed cultural justice framework offers an opportunity to more fully understand how cultural materialities such as murals shape mediated public space in areas of gentrification. The University of Tennessee and the Tennessee Geographic Alliance hosted a three-week summer institute funded by the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) to explore the role of geographic mobility in the African American Freedom Struggle. The institute focused on movement as a fundamental theme in geography and highlighted the impact of migration, transportation, and travel and tourism on structural racism and Black antiracist resistance. Participating educators engaged in discussions, lectures, and hands-on activities, and visited museums and historical sites related to African American history and culture. This essay reads two texts by Samuel R. Delany--Times Square Red, Times Square Blue and "Atlantis: Model 1924"--that prominently thematize spontaneous queer encounter and the financialized production of urban space. It explores the writerly practices that open up the subjective space of sexual cultures threatened and eroded by the impersonal forces of capital, highlighting in particular the use of speculative play in "Atlantis," to suggest it serves as a model for an sf relation to history. In making sense of the contingent conditions lending urgency to Delany's generic intervention, the essay situates Delany's writings within the US systemic cycle of capital accumulation, noting the distinct mechanisms of financialized real estate speculation and attendant gentrification that serve to enforce property relations and sexual norms in New York. The article provides insights into the history and development of Park am Gleisdreieck in Berlin, which is located on the site of a former railway track. The park's transformation over the years reflects Berlin's changing urban landscape, including its periods of stagnation, recovery, destruction, and reconstruction.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has numerous murals that relate expressions of care about different culture groups, nonhuman animals, the local urban ecosystem, and the environment at large. I discuss these themes in journaled encounters with animals in murals while visiting select Philadelphia neighborhoods during several years. My autoethnographic research is based on photography and making connections with the mural subjects, their symbolism, and related urban spaces. I anchor this study in the literatures of therapeutic landscapes and animality discourses in order to examine how animal mural spaces contribute to establishing "therapeutic assemblages". My analysis draws me to a rich sense of locals' care about/for humans and nonhumans that are at times perceived as subaltern, and the local and global environments these animals inhabit. I conclude that Philadelphia's dynamic landscape alternates in taking down and reaffirming therapeutic places as the city is reconfigured by both gentrification and resistance to urban renewal. Questions of change and the future have become increasingly salient in Vancouver's Chinatown in the last decade, as gentrification proceeds apace. Various actors have used the neighbourhood's public spaces to express their visions of Chinatown's future. These claims are articulated through attempts to demonstrate and strengthen the vitality of Chinatown in the face of growing narratives of its putative decline and death. By engaging with the contemporary sociological literature on conviviality, where relatively "thin" versus more radical conceptualizations of conviviality are being debated, and putting it into conversation with both the geographical literature on the politics of public space and political theory discussions of agonism, we argue that the uses of public space must be analyzed without romanticizing conviviality or consensus in order to understand the productive possibilities of "political conviviality" and agonistic encounters. Our focus is the "Hot+Noisy Mahjong Socials" held in recent summers in an iconic plaza in Chinatown. These are organized by a community group that builds connections between mostly Chinese Canadian youth and largely Cantonese-speaking seniors. These groups espouse a goal of "place-keeping" in the context of planning trends toward "placemaking." Through this case, we consider how activists from marginalized communities build solidarities through agonistic "place-keeping" in the face of gentrification and threats of cultural erasure. In the years prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rapid growth of tourism and the emergence of online tourist accommodation rental platforms gave rise to a considerable increase in the tourist pressure on urban destinations, leading to processes (and problems) such as overtourism, tourism gentrification or touristification. The post-pandemic tourism recovery has placed these processes at the centre of debate once again. This text reflects on the possibilities for measuring the touristification of the urban space. A methodology is proposed that is based on the elaboration of two indicators that are applied on a city block scale in Donostia-San Sebastián: an indicator of the intensity of tourism accommodation and an indicator of the tourism specialisation of the retail and restaurant supply. Then, a spatial cross analysis is made of the values obtained and they are compared with the presence of visitors, enabling us to reflect on the geography of the touristification of the city on a block scale. Touristification is, above all, a process of the intensification of the tourism activity which is distributed unevenly across the urban space and acts on a pre-existing fabric that determines its scope. From an applied perspective, the study generates useful knowledge for making decisions about the series of urban policies that contemplate the sustainable insertion of tourism into the city. Urbanisation has had an impact on people's livelihoods, and on social infrastructures as well as on the consumption of resources. In the last century, we have witnessed many transformations at the urban scale that in many cases led to the commodification and enclosure of public areas and, especially, green areas. With the turn of the millennium and following the adoption of the UN Agenda 2030, the trend has been partially reverted and cities in Europe are becoming progressively greener, although the phenomenon do not always bring positive societal outcomes and it is not able to re-distribute benefits among community members, promoting unequal access to green areas. Instead, in many cases the so-called green gentrification phenomenon has been identified as a primary societal challenge connected with urban regeneration projects. Building on this, the paper aims to find an answer to the question of whether or not the governance model adopted for urban green areas influences how benefits connected with ecosystem services are perceived by stakeholders and re-distributed at the community level. Based on the gaps highlighted in the theoretical background and direct observation of Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano (BAM), a recently developed urban park in Milan, an analytical framework was developed and tested. The results allow us to identify innovative practices for the management of green areas capable of maximising ecosystem services' benefits beyond the intervention area. This will support the adaptability, replicability, and scalability of these initiatives while providing effective tools for practitioners and planners when developing a collaborative management model for urban green areas. "The Streets Belong to Us: Sex, Race, and Policing from Segregation to Gentrification" by Anne Gray Fischer explores the role of sexual policing in the construction of modern US cities, with a particular focus on the experiences of Black women. This article attempts, based on the concepts and methods of the philosopher Jacques Rancière, to conceptualize the process of gentrification as a scene of sharing and disagreement, a scene in which the paradox of a limited access to housing and a shared occupation of public space occurs simultaneously. Three concepts of Jacques Rancière help us to encompass the scene of the disagreement of gentrification, as the partition of sensible, the equality of intelligence, and the dissensus. Previous studies on environmental justice have paid limited attention to procedural injustice in parks. Using the concept of slow violence, this paper interrogates the ideological and philosophical foundations of American public parks in order to unearth enduring structural patterns of procedural injustice. The paper illustrates that community, state, and national parks in the U.S. were founded upon the elitism, eugenics, and racism of affluent and powerful White conservationists and social reformers. To materialize their own interests, the White elite defined, built, and managed public parks by displacing, excluding, and criminalizing the Indigenous, the poor, people of color, and immigrants. As such, many of today's park injustices, such as inequitable park availability and quality, gentrification, and non-visitation of people of color, originated from the beginning of the public parks in the 19th century and have been sustained ever since. The gentrification processes in the center of Madrid and surrounding districts are going through new stages, linked to the intensification of phenomena such as tourism and digital economies, that represent new battle fronts. This article explores the case of the building located on Calle Divino Pastor nr 9, in the Madrid neighborhood of Malasafia. In it, the sale and reform of an old public headquarters takes place, previously squatted and claimed as a social center, and which finally ends up converted into flats for tourist rental and a branded hamburger restaurant that only serves delivery food. In Divino Pastor, a good part of the dynamics that are marking the processes of urban transformation in advanced economies come together and play out. Starting from the same point, this case gives us the opportunity to link (1) disputes over urban space in the heart of cities with dispossession, in the framework of urban neoliberal policies, and (2) advanced processes of gentrification that worsen the problem of access to housing, with phenomena of touristification and gourmetization, more characteristic of the fifth wave, and which in turn (3) are being strongly transformed by the pressure of certain forms of what is known as platform capitalism; new forms of economy and precarious urban work, whose spatial effects collide with the lack of urban regulation tools. Methodologically, we consider this situation as a concrete universal in the Hegelian way, allowing us to understand the general from the particular, and relying on the analysis of data from official sources to contrast what we intuit are trends that came to stay. As we see in the papers in this collection, the same pattern continues into the twenty-first century, and in particular, the 2008 financial crash and its aftermath stimulated further planning reforms as part of neoliberal policy responses and "austerity urbanism" (Peck, [20]). As retrofitting becomes a way to battle climate breakdown, and reusing and recycling the existing building stock becomes the norm (European Commission, [6]), understanding the role of the historic built environment in regeneration policy and practice is key. Norway's case study demonstrates a policy outlook very much comparable to the other European case studies, seemingly following the "austerity urbanism" trend in urban policy, even though the 2008 financial crisis affected Norway much less directly. Mass housing neighborhoods emerged in the second half of the twentieth century as an important part of the affordable social housing stock in Southern Europe, but now these are suffering from social problems and physical degradation. This article, which focuses on a case study of an archetypical transformation of a housing estate in Barcelona (Canyelles), aims at identifying the conditions needed to reduce social inequalities in this type of neighborhood and implement urban rehabilitation programs. The mixed methodology applied consisted of a combination of semi-structured interviews with the main actors involved, a focus group with the neighborhood council, and a multivariate statistical analysis of intra-urban fine-scale social indicators. Based on these methods, the urban transformation projects and their social consequences, which can be observed in the evolution of the social composition of the neighborhood, are analyzed. A significant improvement in the quality of life of the neighbors is seen as a result of the housing rehabilitation and renovation of public spaces programs. The central focus of this article is the interaction between religious actors and urban regeneration in the former industrial area of Amsterdam North. While there is extensive literature on the structural, sociocultural, and economic impact of urban regeneration and related processes of gentrification, the role of religious groups in these processes of neighborhood change has largely been ignored. Based on ethnographic research, I examine how different Christian movements interact with their changing neighborhood in varied forms. The redevelopment of industrial buildings and the gentrification of working-class neighborhoods in Amsterdam North enable different but particular forms of Christian place-making. I focus on two forms of engagement with urban spaces: (a) the reuse of industrial buildings by Pentecostal movements and (b) the transformation of traditional Protestant church buildings into socially mixed neighborhood centers. These two different forms of urban place-making highlight how Christian organizations bring the active agency to urban regeneration and cocreate urban neighborhoods materially and socially. To claim welfare entitlements, the residents challenge state enumeration procedures and carry out a multitude of documentary and inscriptive struggles in the city. Such "numerical strength" is also evident in Old Fadama, Accra, Ghana, where resident population numbers became highly contentious between residents and state officials, with community-led enumeration counting 2.5 times official figures (Farouk & Owusu, [8]). If the state agencies defer in issuing proper documents, the poor interrogate the politics of deferral and the dilatory tactics of the state by filing applications under the ambit of the Right to Information policy. The diverse research sites offer the opportunity to explore some of the similarities and differences among the various tactics that residents adopt to navigate their precarious living conditions and engage with state authorities. This article takes the concept of gated communities to represent a special form of securitised housing, developed in the United States in the 20th century and popularised around the world in later years, and examines it as such. The neo-liberal society is an especially fertile ground for the development of this concept due to the unequal distribution of wealth, growing social stratification, poverty and segregation. Often, the surrounding roads are privatised and access to public areas is restricted for the purposes of these settlements, which leaves entire complexes within cities inaccessible to the majority of citizens. All these processes are in conflict with the democratic concept of the open city and the model of mixed housing, nurtured in the welfare state. The segregation of citizens, and their marginalisation and displacement (gentrification), along with the endangerment and privatisation of public spaces significantly reduce the democratic capacity of urban communities. The main concern of this research is the examination of the reasons which contribute to the expansion of gated communities, and the effects they have on the spirit of the urban community (alienation) and the democratic capacities of cities. The aim of the paper is to examine the notion of gated communities on a sample of cities in the Anglosphere (USA, Canada, New Zealand), and to analyse their specific effects. The analysis of the existing research and case studies concerning gated communities in the world often consists of the use of statistical methods, regulatory change analyses, and the interviews and surveys of tenants, managers, politicians and officials. The comparative method, used in this paper, focuses on the similarities and differences of gated communities in different countries, which enabled us to draw conclusions on better housing and urban development policies (synthesis). In the summer of 1969 - a "record year" for feature film production in New York City - two Black-themed features went into production in two predominantly African American neighborhoods.[1]Cotton Comes to Harlem (Ossie Davis, 1970) featured extensive location shooting throughout Harlem, while The Landlord (Hal Ashby, 1970) filmed primarily in Brooklyn's Park Slope. While the collaboration between the producers of The Landlord and the CFWC apprentices resulted in a cooperative film shoot, it was the so-called trouble on the uptown set that ultimately proved more consequential, leading to a concerted effort to develop a minority-owned and -operated film center in Harlem. Modernist large housing estates in southern Europe developed between the 1950 and 1970s have suffered from dual physical decay and stigmatization over the last three to four decades, challenging public, para-public and private actors. This article addresses recent regeneration strategies and urban policies in Barcelona in a context of the 'marketization' of housing, austerity and a decrease in public resources. By means of a comparative approach, two regeneration projects of housing estates in Barcelona are analysed in terms of modes of governance and their social consequences since 2000. The mixed methodology consists of direct observations and analysis of the designs of the urban interventions; semi-structured interviews with the main urban actors and a sample of residents; and a tentative evaluation of recent social changes in these neighbourhoods. The results show: first, the positive outcomes of initiatives and the limits of the different strategies of urban regeneration carried out to address persistent forms of social exclusion; and second, the relation of these positive outcomes and limitations to changes in governance and the structure of land ownership, which constitutes a controversial aspect in the development of the projects. The role of different actors in regeneration and the reproduction of social inequalities and segregation are discussed. This points to the contingent nature of neoliberal governance as evidenced by the complexity and heterogeneity of its operation at the intra-urban scale even in apparently similar large housing estates in southern Europe. In this review, we bridge recent studies on the political economy of urban and rural real property ownership, focusing on the US. While there are many parallels and interlinkages between urban and rural phenomena, we note that the field generally produces a different literature for each space: one largely about urban housing and another about rural land. We argue that foregrounding their common legal status as "real property" can help develop new and important analyses that unravel the urban/rural binary. Such an approach suggests, for instance, that gentrification and amenity migration are simply urban and rural manifestations of similar underlying dynamics. This awareness also helps enable the search for institutions that connect country and city, such as investors that target real property across multiple geographies. Thus, we broadly outline the points of overlap and divergence between studies of urban and rural real property ownership in order to open up space for more comparative and relational analyses. Finally, we conclude by suggesting two sets of literature that offer resources for unraveling the urban/rural binary: the work of Doreen Massey and Indigenous geographies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rapid rise of digital platform-based transportation services over the past decade has begun to transform urban mobility. Fleets of dockless bicycles and scooters – or 'micromobility'– represent the newest horizon of investment, particularly in the United States. Micromobility platforms launch rapidly, with minimal public planning or funding and no fixed infrastructure, using inexpensive, GPS-connected vehicles stored in public space. These platforms represent a deepening of the neoliberalisation of transport, in which infrastructural properties emerge biopolitically from the dynamics of private platforms. This article examines public debates over the regulation of micromobility platforms in Austin, Texas, in early 2018. Drawing on interviews with city officials and bikesharing professionals, observation of public meetings and GIS analysis of usage data, we argue that conflicts we observed over new micromobility platforms – specifically 'clutter', equity in geographic coverage and data privacy – obscured the deeper political economy of platformisation and the austerity that limited the effectiveness of the existing public station-based bikeshare system. In Austin, the search for 'innovative' micromobility transportation at no public cost resulted in the further erosion of the underfunded public system. We argue that despite their flexible, low-carbon image, existing micromobility platforms in the United States largely exploit rather than address inadequacies of urban transport. The editorial article titled "Touristification and Gentrification Processes in Latin America and Spain: An Overview" explores the problems and interactions between the construction of memory, gentrification of neighborhoods, and touristification of cities in Spain and Latin America. These processes have led to changes in urban spaces, such as the implementation of leisure spaces and the massive appropriation of spaces by tourists and affluent classes. Additionally, they have generated displacements and emotional traumas in the original inhabitants. The article presents specific cases of memory sites turned into tourist destinations, such as the La Hoyada Memory Sanctuary in Peru and the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago de Chile, as well as the gentrification process in the Plaza Mayor of Los Cabos, Mexico, and the historic center of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Between the financial crisis of 2007-2008 and the pandemic crisis of Covid-19, the Anjos neighborhood in Lisbon presented a particular concentration of public spaces offering concerts, exhibitions, dance classes, bars, etc. Many of these spaces are non-profit and promote cultural democracy thus fighting gentrification. From visits to the neighborhood, document analysis and interviews with board members, volunteers and other key actors, we identify two ideal-types of these spaces' missions: the cultural-entertainment and the cultural-activist. We conclude by pointing out that both allow us henceforth to monitor the influence of the participation of these spaces in urban reconfiguration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
