Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious public health concern and overrepresented among justice-involved populations. An emerging area of research focuses on the complex, interrelated and unmet health and social needs of justice-involved women and youth with TBI. Evidence of these needs continues to grow, yet the health and justice systems continue to underperform in supporting the health and social care of justice-involved women and youth. This commentary is a call to action to begin to redress these gaps. We first provide an overview of the needs of women and youth with TBI that affect their transition from custody to community, including those related to victimization, trauma, mental health, substance use, and homelessness. We then highlight the current gaps in knowledge and practice with respect to interventions for women and youth with TBI at transition from custody. The available evidence for the impact of interventions on people with head injury who are justice-involved is sparse, especially studies of interventions focused on women and youth. We conclude with a call for implementation science studies to support translation from research to practice, emphasizing that researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and women and youth at transition should collaborate to develop, implement, and evaluate accommodations and interventions for TBI. To have meaningful, positive impacts on the systems that serve these women and youth, interdisciplinary service delivery approaches should aim to prevent, raise awareness, identify, and provide timely support and services for the varied needs of women and youth with TBI in transition. Background: Increased physical inactivity and sedentary behavior among children are a global health concern. Purpose: Examine associations between parents' perceived neighborhood environment and children's physical activity, outside time, and screen time, and whether these associations were moderated by age and socioeconomic position (SEP). Methods: Parents (N = 1212) completed a survey during the Recording and EValuating Activity in a Modified Park study. The neighborhood perceptions (social and physical environment), children's age, physical activity, outside time, and screen time were parent-reported. The SEP was derived from the Index of Relative Socio-economic Advantage and Disadvantage. Multiple linear and logistic regressions were performed with age and SEP interactions. Results: Favorable perceptions of opportunities to be active and exercise were associated with a higher likelihood of meeting physical activity guidelines. Favorable perceptions of neighborhood ease for walking and a larger social network were also associated with more outdoor time. Moderation analyses revealed that favorable perceptions of several physical and social neighborhood environment features were associated with a higher likelihood of meeting physical activity guidelines in the high-SEP group and were negatively associated with preschoolers' weekday screen time. Background: In 2018, Canada legalized recreational cannabis use with the purpose of protecting youth and restricting access. However, concerns have been raised that this objective has not been met as rates of cannabis use among youth aged 16–24 have not declined. Youth cannabis use is associated with various adverse effects including psychosis, anxiety, depression, suicidality, respiratory distress, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, and intoxications. Service providers play a crucial role in addressing youth cannabis use. This study aimed to understand Ontario service providers' perceptions, practices, and recommendations on youth cannabis use. Methods: This mixed method study included a survey and two focus groups. The survey was distributed to mental health service providers serving youth aged 16–24 across Ontario who were given the option to participate in a focus group. The survey included closed and open-ended questions regarding perceptions, practices, and recommendations, while the focus groups explored these categories in greater depth. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze close-ended questions and interpretative content analysis was applied for open-ended questions. Focus group data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The survey was completed by 160 service providers and 12 participated in two focus groups. Regarding perceptions, 60% of survey participants agreed with legalization, 26% had a strong understanding of medical versus recreational cannabis, 84% believed that cannabis has physical and mental health risks, and 49% perceived stigmatization. Less than half of the survey participants reported screening or assessing cannabis use, 16% stated they are highly familiar with treating cannabis use, and 67% reported that they rarely work with families. Subthemes identified in the focus groups under perceptions included normalization and stigmatization, harms for youth, and stigma, racism, and discrimination. Subthemes under practice included cannabis not being the primary focus, challenges with screening, assessment, and intervention, and referral to specialized services. Both the survey and focus group participants recommended increasing public education, enhancing service provider training, improving regulation and policies, reducing stigma and minimization, improving service access, and providing more culturally responsive services. Conclusion: Youth cannabis use in Canada remains a significant public health concern, necessitating a more comprehensive plan to protect Ontario youth and reduce associated harms. Mental health disturbances are getting significant attention over time for public health concerns. Physical activity (PA) and sports are presumed to have a vigorous role in decreasing the impact of depression, anxiety, and stress and enhancing one's psychological and emotional well-being. The present systematic review was conducted to examine the role of physical activity and sports in the mental health of the young population so that recommendations for future research and therapy protocols could be made. Electronic databases including Medline, Science Direct, Psych Info, Pub med, Google Scholar, and Web of sciences were used for this review to maintain the reliability of the data. Keywords of physical activity, sports, mental health, and youth were used for data search for the last five years from 2016 to 2021. Full-length English language articles, mostly published in open-access journals were considered for the review. Based upon inclusion/exclusion criteria 20 articles were selected for the present review. Published articles both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies indicated a moderate impact of physical activity, exercise, and sports on alleviating symptoms related to depression, anxiety, stress, and substance-related problems. Moreover, physical activity and sports helped to improve social skills, positive self-image, cognitive functioning, and psychological well-being among youth. The relationship between physical activity, sports, and mental health was also determined by some of the demographic variables such as gender, education level, and socioeconomic status. Some studies also indicated an inverse relationship, especially in alcohol intake. To sum up it is concluded that there is a significant impact of physical activities and sports on the mental health of the young population. PA and sports not only decrease the already existing mental health-related issues e.g., depression, anxiety, stress, and suicidal behavior, drug use also help to maintain psychological well-being and quality of life. Background: A successful transition from late adolescence to adulthood is essential. Physical activity (PA) can support this process and lead to positive health outcomes. The change in PA from inactive to active stages is influenced by psychosocial correlates, and as such, this study tested the relationships among psychosocial correlates, stages of change for PA and health outcomes in university students from Hong Kong (n = 404) and Germany (n = 366). Methods: The questionnaire contained (1) PA and stages of change; (2) 10 psychosocial correlates including outcome expectations, affective attitude, barriers, self-efficacy, body-concept, plans, intrinsic motivation, activity emotions, assessment of activity situation, and social support; and (3) 5 health outcomes, including fitness, subjective well-being, health satisfaction, physical complaints, and BMI. Results: Barriers and intrinsic motivation were the critical psychosocial variables related to stages of change. Specific planning was more important for Hong Kong students' stage progression within inactive stages. Competitive or enjoyable PA programs were more effective for male students moving from inactive to active stages. The link between stages of change for PA and health outcomes (ie, fitness, health satisfaction) was well established. Objective: To assess measurement properties of the two youth versions of EQ-5D (i.e., 5-level EQ-5D-Y [Y-5L] and 3-level EQ-5D-Y [Y-3L]) and KIDSCREEN-10 in China. Methods: Children and adolescents attending schools in Shanghai, China were recruited to self-complete the Y-5L, KIDSCREEN-10, and Y-3L questionnaires. Their feasibility was assessed according to missing responses. Convergent validity of the EQ-5D-Y dimensions, a summated dimension score [SDS], and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were assessed by examining their correlations with the KIDSCREEN-10 index score and dimensions. Known-groups validity of SDS, VAS, and KIDSCREEN-10 index score were tested by comparing the scores of pupils with and without two conditions (i.e., overweight and shortsightedness), and the relative efficiency (RE) between them was also evaluated. Results: A total of 262 pupils (girl: 58.4%; mean age: 12.7 years) were enrolled. Missing responses were low for both the Y-5L (0.3%) and Y-3L (2.4%), and KIDSCREEN-10 (0.3%). The overall ceiling effects were 40.3% for the Y-5L, 44.1% for the Y-3L and 1.1% for the KIDSCREEN-10. The SDSY-5L, SDSY-3L and VAS were moderately correlated with the KIDSCREEN-10 index score (|r|= 0.425 for SDSY-5L, 0.323 for SDSY-3L, and 0.435 for VAS; p < 0.01 for all). Similar EQ-5D-Y and KIDSCREEN-10 dimensions showed moderate to strong correlations (|r|> 0.3). Both the SDSY-5L and SDSY-3L had lower values, and VAS and KIDSCREEN-10 index score had higher values for pupils without shortsightedness compared with those for their counterparts. The difference was statistical significance for the SDSY-5L and VAS (P < 0.05 for both), which also had higher RE in the condition. Conclusions: The Y-5L, Y-3L, and KIDSCREEN-10 questionnaires are feasible and valid for measuring HRQoL among children/adolescents in China. Purpose: The prevalence of poor mental health continues to rise among youth; however, large-scale interventions to improve mental and physical health remain a public health challenge. Time spent in nature is associated with improved health among youth. This study aimed to assess youth experiences with nature and the self-perceived impact on their mental and physical health among a nationwide sample of US youth.Methods: In September 2020, five open-ended questions that aimed to assess perceptions regarding nature were posed to 1174 MyVoice youth, aged 14-24 years. Qualitative responses were analyzed using thematic analysis, and data were summarized using descriptive statistics.Results: The mean (SD) age of the 994 respondents (RR = 84.7%) was 18.9 (2.7) years; 47.4% were female, and 57.4% Non-Hispanic White. Among youth, many felt that spending time in nature positively impacted their mental health, with 51.6% mentioning that it made them "feel calm when I am out in nature"; 22.1% said that it relieved stress or "reduces my anxiety," and 17.1% felt that being in nature positively impacted their physical health and "makes me feel more active and in shape." However, 7.0% said it negatively impacted their health, such as "It makes me feel isolated." Most youth (87.8%) want to spend more time in nature, with 22% mentioning barriers (i.e., busy schedules, built environment, and COVID-19) impeding them from doing so.Conclusions: Youth in our sample generally report feeling physically and mentally better when spending time in nature and want to spend more time in nature. Public health policies and practices that eliminate barriers and actively support time spent outside may be a feasible and acceptable practice to promote overall well-being among youth. The Positive Mental Health Surveillance Indicator Framework (PMHSIF) provides estimates of positive mental health outcomes and associated risk and protective factors for youth aged 12 to 17 years in Canada. This study explored the relationship between sociodemographic factors and psychological and social well-being among youth in Canada using data from the Canadian Student Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey 2016-2017. The role of therapeutic residential care (TRC) is changing. In fact, this article reframes the terminology of TRC and uses “residential interventions” to more accurately reflect that residential programs provide time-limited “intervention” and treatment efforts must connect and extend to families and communities. Such changes are being compelled by necessity and innovation. Necessity is demanding evidence, data, and durable positive outcomes for this expensive intervention. Innovation is transforming basic service delivery through meaningful inclusion of youth and families and effective collaboration with community-based organizations. Service elements that confound this changing role are being reconsidered, including reductions in length of stay, a focus on long-term permanency, and the location of the actual intervention from program-centric practice to interventions in the home and community. This article addresses an apparent paradox between academic and policy depictions of American Indian reservations as "broken" and "unhealthy" places, and Indigenous youth perceptions of reservations as spaces of "health" and "wellness." Public health literature often frames reservations as damaged, health-denying places, chronicling the extraordinarily high rates of suicide, substance abuse, as well as vast health disparities. Despite these dire statistics, our research with Native youth in San Diego County found that young people chose to primarily emphasize their positive experiences with, and attachments to, their reservations. In this article, we share strength- and desire-based narratives to explore how reservations can serve as spaces of wellness for Indigenous youth, despite ongoing settler colonial harm. We seek to expand the discussion on the unintended consequences of deficit-centered scholarship by arguing that health research should also engage with the narratives of hope and desire that are reflective of the way many Native youth feel about their communities. In this article, we urge scholars and practitioners to rethink how we conduct health research to include methodologies that listen to the narratives and experiences of those who, day in and day out, navigate settler colonial landscapes, while continuing to create spaces of hope and healing. Introduction: Nonsmoking youth form a high-risk group and are at increased risk of ill-effects caused due to secondhand smoke (SHS). The objective is to determine the prevalence and correlates of SHS exposure among the nonsmoking youth in India from global adult tobacco survey (GATS), 2009–10. Methods: Secondary data analysis of GATS, 2009–10 was done to find the correlates of SHS at three different settings – house, workplace - indoor, and public place. All the sociodemographic variables were tested for association with SHS exposure using multivariate analysis. Prevalence ratio with 95% confidence interval [CI] was used to report the risk. Results: The prevalence of SHS was 48.6% (95% CI: 47.7%–49.5%) at house, 25.5% (95% CI: 23.5%–27.6%) at workplace - indoors, and 42.7% (95% CI: 41.7%–43.7%) at public places. SHS exposure among females was found to be higher at house; youth living in rural area were found at increased risk to SHS at both household and public places; and inverse relationship was seen between SHS exposure and education level at both household and workplace - indoors. Overall, the study showed that smokeless tobacco users were at increased risk of SHS exposure at all the three settings. Conclusion: Being female, living in rural area, lower education status, lower socioeconomic status, and use of smokeless tobacco were found to be associated with SHS exposure among nonsmoking youth in India. Young people aged 15-24 years constitute a huge proportion of Nigeria's population and have enormous potential for socio-economic development. However, the fulfillment of that potential is dependent on how society meets their present needs and aspirations. We examined the evidence from 2003 to 2013 to establish whether there has been improvement in social conditions and opportunities for young people in Nigeria. We used the 2003, 2008 and 2013 Nigerian DHS data to estimate young people's wellbeing. Indicators of wellbeing were: unemployment rate, uneducated and unemployed young people, literacy rate; support for schooling, young people not graduating secondary school on time, young people in households where either parent lacks secondary education, teenage pregnancy and young people not covered by health insurance. We used bi-variate statistics and logistic regression to highlight determinants of wellbeing. Unemployment rate increased from 57.0 % in 2008 to 59.2 % in 2013 while the proportion of those who were both uneducated and unemployed was 12.6 % in 2013 (vs. 13.0 and 14.1 % in 2003 and 2008, respectively). Only 0.6 and 0.5 % of young people received support for schooling in 2008 and 2013, respectively. Literacy rate increased from 50.9 % (measured for only women) in 2003 to 71.0 % in 2013. Nearly all young people were not covered by health insurance. Overweight/obesity among youth is a grave concern in the USA due to its potential impact on illness such as hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and asthma. This paper reports on the design and usage of iN Touch, a mobile self-management application for tracking observations of daily living (ODLs) in a health coaching program for low-income, urban, minority youth 13-24 years with overweight/obesity. We applied a youth-centered, participatory design approach to design and implementation of the technology and intervention with a representative 10-member youth advisory board. The recommendations were implemented prior to launching the technology in an intervention phase. The application with food, exercise, mood and socializing trackers along with pictures and notes was delivered on an iPod Touch to 24 participants. Mixed methods were applied to evaluate technology acceptance including system-generated data, questionnaires and exit interviews. There was good engagement among participants who recorded 2,117 ODLs over 6 months. The mean rating for usefulness was 3.50/5, SD = 1.18 and for ease of use, 3.83/5, SD = 1.27. Qualitative analysis of exit interviews found that design recommendations were fulfilled and the resulting technology was compelling. Future papers will report on the health impacts of iN Touch. Background: Substance use and weight gain among youth increase the risk for future disease. As such, the purpose of this study is to examine how many Canadian youth are currently failing to meet substance use and weight gain related public health guidelines. Methods: Data from the 2010–11 Youth Smoking Survey were used to examine grade 9 to 12 students meeting seven different guidelines by sex and by grade. Results: Among Canadian youth, 8.8% were current smokers, 18.8% were current marijuana users, 25.5% were current binge drinkers, 22.5% were considered overweight or obese, 31.2% did not meet physical activity guidelines, 89.4% exceeded sedentary behaviour guidelines, and 93.6% reported inadequate fruit and vegetable intake. The mean number of risk factors per student was 2.9 (±1.2); only 0.5% of youth reported having none of the risk factors. Conclusion: Students rarely met all seven public health guideline examined, and the vast majority of actually reported having two or more modifiable risk factors for disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Youth Substance Abuse Service (YSAS) was conceived and developed as a youth alcohol and other drug (AOD) service when few adolescent treatment models existed. Although initially funded to provide drug support and treatment, our developing practice, training and research findings encouraged us to view our role more broadly. Now with 10 years' experience, YSAS increasingly draws on social health concepts and primary health practices to describe our work with young drug users. Through our growing practice and training experience we have developed services to meet client needs. Evaluation of these services and further research has refined our thinking and provided a theoretical basis for our work. This paper sets out to describe the evolution of a youth AOD service, and demonstrate how social health concepts and primary health practices have helped frame and facilitate our responses to young drug users during YSAS' first 10 years. Many studies report few socioeconomic (SES) differences in health in youth, a pattern contrasting with that of health inequalities in childhood and adulthood. This paper focuses on the child–youth transition to examine the hypothesis of equalisation in health over this period. Specifically, we test two hypotheses: (a) that equalisation is more likely for health state measures (physical and malaise symptoms and accidents) than health status ([limiting] longstanding illness and self-rated health) or health potential (height), and (b) that the patterning of health over this period is similar between occupational (social class) and non-occupational (deprivation, housing tenure and family affluence) SES measures. Data are derived from the West of Scotland 11 to 16 cohort, followed from late childhood (aged 11) through early (13) to mid (15) adolescence. The results showed very little evidence of SES differences in (limiting) longstanding illness at any age for both sexes, while self-rated health exhibited some differentiation, and height (as expected) consistent gradients throughout. By contrast, among males evidence of equalisation was found for both physical and malaise symptoms and pedestrian road traffic accidents (RTAs). Among females, equalisation was confined to specific physical symptoms, pedestrian RTAs, sports injuries and burns/scalds, while for malaise symptoms a reverse gradient at age 11 strengthened with age. These patterns were generally unaffected by the SES measure used. We conclude that while some of the evidence is consistent with the equalisation hypothesis, it needs extending to accommodate patterns of no SES differences, and particularly reverse gradients, in childhood. These patterns may reflect the increasingly pervasive influence of youth culture, suggesting that in the UK the boundary between childhood and youth should be set at an earlier age. This in turn suggests that international comparisons have considerable analytic potential for identifying the conditions under which equalisation does and does not occur. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Introduction: 'Teenage suicides double as the future crumbles' with collapse of the economy in Argentina (Arie 2002). Schizophrenia 'linked to racism', a study reveals among ethnic minorities in London (Boydell et al. 2001). The promotion of emotional well‐being focuses on improving environments (social, physical, economic) that affect emotional well‐being and enhancing the 'coping' capacity of communities as well as individuals (Wood & Wise 1997). What improvements in the 'environment' are required, and how does one 'enhance coping' in order to promote emotional well‐being? What is the role of those working in community child health in promoting mental health and emotional well‐being? Most of the research on the determinants of the health and well‐being of populations have focused on physical health problems, particularly mortality and life expectancy (Marmot & Wilkinson 1999). There is less research on the 'upstream' (socioeconomic) determinants of mental health problems, and even less on emotional well‐being and enhancing 'coping' or promoting resilience. Examples of upstream determinants of mental health problems include good evidence linking the prevalence of mental health problems of children and young people to income, educational status and family structure (Sawyer et al. 2001). Male youth suicide has been linked to such upstream determinants as relative unemployment rates. Suicide has increased with increasing ratio of youth to overall unemployment rates (Morrell et al. 2001). A significantly higher risk of suicide in Australia over the past century was shown to be associated with conservative governments compared with social democratic government tenures (Page et al. 2002). Background: Access to contraceptive services is a cornerstone of human well-being. While Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) promote family planning in Kenya, the unmet need for contraceptives among youth remains high. CHVs seem to pay little specific attention to the contraceptive needs of the youth.Methods: We conducted a qualitative study exploring the role of CHVs in increasing access and uptake of contraceptive services among youth aged 18-24 years in Narok and Homabay Counties, Kenya. We undertook 37 interviews and 15 focus group discussions involving CHVs, youth, community members, community leaders, youth leaders and health programme managers. Data were recorded, transcribed, translated, coded and thematically analysed, according to a framework that included community, CHV and health system-related factors.Results: CHVs often operated in traditional contexts that challenge contraceptive use among unmarried female and male youth and young married couples. Yet many CHVs seemed to have overcome this potential 'barrier' as well as reigning misconceptions about contraceptives. While private and facility-based public contraceptive services were somehow available, CHVs were the preferred service provider for many youth due to ease of access and saving time and transport costs. This was influenced by varied perceptions among youth of CHVs' knowledge, skills and attitudes regarding contraceptives and provider-client interaction, and specifically their commitment to maintain confidentiality.Conclusions: CHVs have the potential to increase access to contraceptives for young people, reducing unmet need for contraceptives. Their knowledge, skills and attitudes need strengthening through training and supervision, while incentives to motivate them and broadening the range of contraceptives they are allowed to offer should be considered. With a conventional intake procedure and with a modification which included asking parents of prospective patients of an adolescent clinic to complete a history form prior to the patient's first visit, patients whose previous source of medical care was nonspecific used significantly less care than those patients accustomed to obtaining care from a specific source. Rearrangement of the intake process to include a preliminary interview with parents was associated with elimination of this difference. Furthermore, the data generated by the preliminary history form filled out at home did not prove to be clinically helpful. It would seem wise, therefore, to offer the assistance of an interview to parents of those adolescents whose medical care during the preceding five years was obtained from multiple sources or none at all. Background: Mental ill-health is one of the most significant health and social issues affecting young people globally. To address the mental health crisis, a number of cross-sectoral research and action priorities have been identified. These include improving mental health literacy, translating research findings into accessible public health outputs, and the use of digital technologies. There are, however, few examples of public health-oriented knowledge transfer activities involving collaborations between researchers, the Arts, and online platforms in the field of youth mental health.Objective: The primary aim of this project was to translate qualitative research findings into a series of online public mental health animations targeting young people between the ages of 16 and 25 years. A further aim was to track online social media engagement and viewing data for the animations for a period of 12 months.Methods: Qualitative data were collected from a sample of 17 youth in Ireland, aged 18-21 years, as part of the longitudinal population-based Adolescent Brain Development study. Interviews explored the life histories and the emotional and mental health of participants. The narrative analysis revealed 5 thematic findings relating to young people's emotional and mental health. Through a collaboration between research, the Arts, and the online sector, the empirical thematic findings were translated into 5 public health animations. The animations were hosted and promoted on 3 social media platforms of the Irish youth health website called SpunOut. Viewing data, collected over a 12-month period, were analyzed to determine the reach of the animations.Results: Narrative thematic analysis identified anxiety, depression, feeling different, loneliness, and being bullied as common experiences for young people. These thematic findings formed the basis of the animations. During the 12 months following the launch of the animations, they were viewed 15,848 times. A majority of views occurred during the period of the social media ad campaign at a cost of €0.035 (approximately US $0.042) per view. Animations on feeling different and being bullied accounted for the majority of views.Conclusions: This project demonstrates that online animations provide an accessible means of translating empirical research findings into meaningful public health outputs. They offer a cost-effective way to provide targeted online information about mental health, coping, and help-seeking to young people. Cross-sectoral collaboration is required to leverage the knowledge and expertise required to maximize the quality and potential reach of any knowledge transfer activities. A high level of engagement is possible by targeting non-help-seeking young people on their native social media platforms. Background: Daily behaviours such as active commuting to school (ACS) could be a source of physical activity, contributing to the improvement of youth cardiovascular health, however, the relationship between ACS and other aspects of a youth's health, such as sleep duration and breakfast consumption, require further clarification. The aims of this study were therefore: 1) to analyse the prevalence of modes of commuting to school, sleep duration, and breakfast consumption by age groups and gender, and 2) to analyse the association between ACS, sleep duration recommendations, and breakfast consumption by age groups and gender.Method: This cross-sectional study included 732 school-aged students of low-middle socioeconomic status, categorised into children (10-12 yr), young adolescents (13-15 yr), and older adolescents (16-18 yr). Modes of commuting to/from school, sleep duration, and breakfast consumption were self-reported. Logistic regression models were fitted to examine the association between ACS, sleep duration and breakfast consumption, analysed according to age groups and gender.Results: The percentage of students meeting sleep duration and daily breakfast recommendations was lowest in older adolescents, and highest in children (6.3% versus 50.8% p < 0.001, and 62.1%, versus 76.8%, p = 0.001, respectively). Young adolescents and girls who met the sleep duration recommendations were more likely to be active commuters than their counterparts (OR = 4.25; 95% CI = 1.81 to 9.92, p = 0.001 and OR = 2.89; 95%CI = 1.01 to 8.27, p = 0.04, respectively).Conclusion: Young adolescents (13-15 yr) and girls who met the sleep duration recommendations during school days displayed a positive association with ACS. There was no association between ACS and breakfast consumption for any of the age groups or gender. Children (10-12 yr) were those that best meet with the adequate sleep duration and breakfast consumption recommendations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Protecting the youth and adolescents' health is considered to be an indicator of health equity. The current study was conducted to analyze health status of the Iranian youth and adolescents, identify service gaps, and design action-oriented interventions. Methods: In this study with multimethods design conducted in 2014, first to identify and analyze the current situation, related articles and national and international documents were searched and reviewed. Then, stakeholders' analysis, interviews, group discussion, and analysis of the youth and adolescent health management system were done, and the policy document was drew up in three sections of recognition, orientation, and suggested interventions. Results: The most important focus areas of the youth and adolescents' health were identified to be their behavior and lifestyle, less advantaging of primary health care in cities, and high rates of educational dropouts. Considering a responsive national structure to develop and implement a comprehensive and integrated program for educating healthy lifestyles and reducing risky behaviors and focusing on accident prevention as a first priority at the level of impact and planning on risk factors of noncommunicable and communicable diseases related to sexually transmitted infections and AIDS at the outcome-level indicators is a necessity through intersectoral collaboration and community participation strategies. Conclusions: Achieving premiere indicators of the Iranian youth health requires political commitment and support of the state, more than ever. To cooperation and utilize the capacity of other sectors to implement the Ministry of Health and Medical Education programs, establishment of the youth health commission is recommended with participation of the main partners.
