A multiple case study has been carried out of four teacher groups who engaged in collective lesson design, observation, and reflection to support their professional learning. The teacher groups were examined on what and how they learned from their collaboration over time. For each meeting, teachers’ learning logs and transcripts were analysed. The results show that the groups differed in the amount, consistency, and stability of self-reported learning outcomes throughout the meetings. Differences between groups also relate to the number and type of dialogic moves between the teachers within each group. A main conclusion includes that challenging each other in their dialogues supported teachers’ learning. Additional explanations of learning outcomes relate to teachers’ collective participation and facilitation in the group.

The International Dyslexia Association estimates that on average, as many as 15% to 20% of the population may display symptoms of dyslexia, which include inaccurate or laborious reading, and weak spelling and writing. Unfortunately, many individuals with dyslexia have found themselves surrounded by school and community members who do not understand this pervasive and well-documented language-learning disability. Data on experiences of diverse practitioners attempting to gain expertise in dyslexia are one critical path for identifying potential mechanisms for mitigating these challenges. In this article, the authors report on a multiple-case study designed to better understand the experiences and contexts of graduate students enrolled in an online dyslexia assessment and intervention professional development program. Analysis revealed common contextual barriers to practice across unique settings and also common supports acquired as participants built their internal capacity through their online learning experiences.

Purpose This descriptive multiple case study examined the effects of a contextualized expository strategy intervention on supported and independent note-taking, verbal rehearsal, and reporting skills for three elementary students with language disorders. Method Two 9-year-old fourth grade students and one 11-year-old sixth grade student with language disorders participated. The intervention was delivered as sixteen individual 20-minute sessions across nine weeks by the school speech-language pathologist. Students learned to take written and pictographic notes from expository texts and use verbal formulation and rehearsal of individual sentences and whole reports in varied learning contexts. To explore both emergent and independent accomplishments, performance was examined in final intervention session presentations and pre/post intervention testing. Results Following the intervention, all three students effectively used notes and verbal rehearsal to prepare and present fluent, organized, accurate, confident oral reports to an audience. From pre- to post-test, the students showed a range of improvements in the quality of notes, use of verbal rehearsal, holistic quality of oral and written reporting, and strategy awareness. Conclusions Sketch and Speak shows potential as an expository intervention for students who struggle with academic language learning. The results support further examination of this intervention for supported strategy use by younger students and independent use by older students.

OBJETIVO: O estudo visa identificar em que medida a participação no Programa Residência Pedagógica (PRP) pode gerar uma mudança de concepção dos participantes acerca do ensino na Educação Física (EF) escolar.MÉTODOS: Pautada numa abordagem mista, quantitativa e qualitativa, a pesquisa se caracteriza como um estudo de casos múltiplos, no qual sete acadêmicos e três professores, responderam um questionário e uma entrevista. RESULTADOS: Os resultados indicam que a maioria dos participantes do PRP relata a ocorrência de uma mudança na compreensão do sentido da EF escolar, quando comparada com o entendimento anterior à participação no programa, além de uma alteração na percepção em relação ao conhecimento sobre a pluralidade de temas pertinentes a essa disciplina. CONCLUSÃO: Os principais fatores que induziram a alteração foram: a criação e o desenvolvimento de uma proposta curricular, a compreensão da pluralidade dos temas da EF como direito de aprendizagem dos alunos e as experiências em desenvolver o planejamento em um contexto escolar real.

Sticker use is an increasingly popular part of daily messaging activity. However, little is known regarding the types, functions, and outcomes of sticker use in authentic online communications. To investigate these phenomena, we analysed sticker use in five small mobile-messaging-facilitated discussion groups initiated by students for course projects in an Asian university. The students used four types of stickers, among which ‘animated picture without text’ was the most frequent. Sticker functions fell into two main categories: as a tone indicator with scope over a textual message, and as a stand-alone illocutionary act. Based on interviews with seven participants, we found disparities between the sender’s intention and the receiver’s interpretation for 34.7% of the stickers, but these disparities did not adversely affect the communication. Implications of the findings are discussed.

PurposeThis study explores how lesson study (LS) can enhance teacher candidates' ability to develop their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) for teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).Design/methodology/approachA multiple case study design was undertaken using the social-constructivist paradigm. The authors explored similarities and differences within and among four cases of teacher candidates who collaborated with a cooperating teacher and a university mentor. The data were collected from field observations, post-lesson discussions and follow-up interviews; it was then content analyzed and validated using negative case analysis.FindingsLearning from post-lesson discussions within their own LS clusters, including a teacher candidate, his/her cooperating teacher and university mentor, could help teacher candidates develop their PCK for STEM, rather than gain experience through several rounds of LS engagement. The foci of post-lesson discussions, which were discussed by each LS cluster the most, were students' context, teaching and STEM prototypes, while knowledge of instructional strategies for teaching STEM was mostly related to the previously mentioned foci. Teacher candidates' confidence in teaching STEM lessons seemed to improve when they designed and discussed the overall lessons with their LS clusters.Originality/valueThe STEM-specific LS model was proposed to support the exploration of the struggles and successes of student learning before designing the purpose of the LS and enacting its phases; the implementation of LS could be the tool for enhancing teacher candidates' PCK for STEM teaching.

Resumen Objetivo . El propósito de esta investigación fue conocer las prácticas evaluativas diferenciadas que realiza el profesorado chileno de educación especial para estudiantes que presentan necesidades educativas especiales derivadas de discapacidad intelectual, quienes se integran en escuelas de educación general básica a través de los Proyectos de Integración Escolar (PIE). El estudio pretendió, además, analizar los significados que los equipos docentes de educación especial atribuyen a sus propias prácticas de evaluación. Metodología . La investigación se realizó desde un enfoque metodológico cualitativo con un diseño de estudio de caso múltiple. Las personas participantes fueron 10 docentes de educación especial en servicio, de 9 establecimientos educacionales diferentes de la región del Biobío, Chile. El instrumento utilizado para la recopilación de información fue la entrevista semiestructurada. La información recogida fue analizada a través de la técnica de análisis de contenido temático. Resultados . Los hallazgos muestran que los educadores y las educadoras especiales que se entrevistaron utilizan procedimientos de evaluación diferenciada alineados con los principios de la evaluación general, pero con una participación incipiente de elementos propios de la especialidad, para dar respuesta a las necesidades educativas especiales del estudiantado que presenta discapacidad intelectual. Conclusiones. Se concluye que es necesario que los centros reflexionen sobre los procesos de enseñanza y prácticas de evaluación que llevan a cabo, con el fin de establecer mejoras en sus dinámicas y procesos de aprendizaje del estudiantado con discapacidad intelectual que asiste a centros regulares de enseñanza. Abstract Objective. The purpose of this research was to know the differentiated evaluation practices implemented by the special education teachers for students with special educational needs deriving from intellectual disability and are integrated into basic general education schools through the School Integration Projects (PIE). The research also analyzed the meanings that the special education teachers attribute to their own practices. Method. The research was conducted under a qualitative approach with a multiple case study design. The participants were 10 Special Education teachers in service from nine different educational establishments. The instrument used to gather information was a semi-structured interview. The information was analyzed through the thematic content analysis technique. Results. The findings show that most of the differential educators interviewed perform differentiated evaluation procedures for students with intellectual disability; these procedures are aligned with the principles of the general evaluation in order to respond to the special educational needs of the students. Conclusions . It is concluded that the centers need to conduct a reflexive analysis of teaching processes and evaluation practices that they implement in order to establish improvements in their dynamics in favor of students with intellectual disabilities who attend regular teaching centers. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi conhecer as práticas diferenciadas de avaliação realizadas pelo corpo docente de Educação Especial para estudantes integrados nas escolas de educação básica, que apresentam necessidades educacionais especiais derivadas de deficiência intelectual, por meio dos Projetos de Integração Escolar (PIE). Outro propósito dessa pesquisa também foi analisar os significados que o corpo docente de Educação Especial atribue às suas próprias práticas de avaliação. Metodologia . A pesquisa foi conduzida sob uma abordagem metodológica qualitativa, com um desenho de estudo de caso múltiplo. Participaram 10 professores de Educação Especial de nove diferentes estabelecimentos de ensino. O instrumento utilizado para coletar informações foi a entrevista semiestruturada. As informações foram analisadas pela técnica de análise de conteúdo temático. Resultados. Os resultados mostram que a maioria dos educadores especiais entrevistados realiza procedimentos de avaliação diferenciados para os estudantes que apresentam deficiência intelectual, alinhados aos princípios da avaliação geral, com o objetivo de responder suas necessidades educacionais especiais. Conclusões . Conclui-se que é necessário que os centros realizem uma análise reflexiva dos processos de ensino e práticas de avaliação que realizam, a fim de estabelecer melhorias em sua dinâmica em favor dos estudantes com deficiência intelectual que frequentam os centros regulares de ensino.

The purpose of this study was to examine how secondary students with severe disabilities (i.e., severe intellectual disability or autism, multiple disabilities) participate in extracurricular school clubs. Using a qualitative multiple case design, the experiences of three high school students were examined. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document reviews. A single-case inductive open-coding strategy was utilized across all data sources in which codes and categories emerged, and a final cross-case thematic evaluation was conducted. The cross-case thematic analysis resulted in the following four overarching themes: (a) going with the flow; (b) social obstacles: on the outside looking in; (c) supports provided: too much, too little, just right; and (d) safety in numbers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the application of gamification promotes employee motivation and engagement in the workplace. This study sought to identify gamification characteristics, examine motivation and engage at work to relate them to different game designs. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative exploratory study of multiple cases involving four companies located in Brazil’s southern region. These companies use gamification with their employees or companies whose business offers gamification solutions focused on people management. Findings This multiple case study presented aspects and different approaches to gamification and serious games. Of the four case studies, the Bravi Quiz application was the most satisfactory case because of its attractive design. Research limitations/implications The research instruments prioritized the topic of gamification with its tools and applicability. The themes of motivation and engagement at work have been addressed but need further research. Practical implications The planning and application of gamification with the appropriate score, feedback and rewards are necessary to promote motivation and engagement in the workplace. Gamification must be linked to its systems and processes on its excellent progress because it is taken in isolation; it does not increase engagement and motivation. Originality/value This is one of the few studies dealing with gamification in human resource management by involving developers/instructors, managers and employees/users and different companies’ tools. This study served as a comparison between the tools of gamification and serious games.

Mental imagery of ‘future selves’ is considered a powerful means for motivating learners, and also teachers, whose own motivation is an important basis for the creation of engaging teaching–learning environments. This multiple case study accompanied Chilean novice teachers of English over 18 months and explores the use of visualizations of teacher selves as a reflection tool in early career development. What images of themselves and their classroom environments do novice teachers create when prompted to visualize themselves as ‘motivating teachers’? What role do these visualizations play in supporting novice teachers in implementing methodological innovations? And do novice teachers value the use of visualizations? Two contrasting cases demonstrate variability in the evolution of visions, and illustrate how these can fulfil different roles in assisting teachers during their induction phase.

This paper reports on the results from a multiple-case study of how EFL school teachers in China coped with online assessment for 10 weeks caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. We looked into the online assessment practices of seven teachers from seven regions of China, through individual interview, teachers’ journals, instructional designs for online teaching, and online classroom observation. The findings reveal that the participants went through a transition from neglecting assessment to overdoing assessment in their online teaching process. Whilst they used a range of online assessment methods, they did not systematically incorporate online assessment into their online curricula. Analysis shows that this issue is most likely to result from teachers’ lack of understanding of the nature of online assessment as an intrinsic component of curriculum and a major means of enhancing students’ learning. Implications will be discussed.

ESL/EFL teachers, especially those working in higher education, across the world were required to teach online after the spread on COVID-19. Many empirical studies have been conducted in the last 1 year to investigate various aspects of online teaching and learning of languages. However, online ESL teaching in South Asian contexts remains almost unexplored. This paper reports a multiple case study that aimed to bridge this gap and explore online formative assessment (FA) and feedback practices of three ESL teachers working in three universities in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews and document analysis. The results indicate that all three teachers actively engaged their students in a variety of FA practices, although they did not use the obtained information from assessments properly and there remained many areas of improvement. Their feedback practices, which involved the integration of a few digital tools, were regular and student-friendly. The study is significant in that it is the first of its kind. Future researchers can conduct large scale studies to verify if the findings of the study are true for other university ESL teachers who are teaching online.

El presente estudio forma parte de un estudio más amplio sobre enfermedades poco frecuentes (EPF) e inclusión educativa. La respuesta educativa al alumnado con enfermedades poco frecuentes, también denominadas raras, minoritarias o de baja prevalencia, implica un abordaje integral desde el ámbito educativo, sanitario y psicosocial que supone un reto para los procesos de inclusión que se desarrollan en muchas escuelas. El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar cuáles son los procesos educativos que favorecen la inclusión del alumnado con enfermedades poco frecuentes en las aulas ordinarias. La metodología de estudio de casos múltiples, permite analizar en profundidad los procesos inclusivos desarrollados en tres centros educativos ordinarios de la Comunidad Valenciana que escolarizan alumnado con EPF. Se trata de una investigación cualitativa que recoge la voz de equipos directivos, personal docente y no docente, familiares y alumnado con EPF mediante entrevistas y grupos focales. Los resultados muestran qué procesos desarrollados en las escuelas garantizan la presencia, participación y aprendizaje del alumnado con EPF. Las conclusiones ponen de relieve la importancia de la planificación y la coordinación de los agentes implicados, la organización de los apoyos, sobre todo los específicos, y abre la discusión sobre los dilemas que plantea la evaluación de los aprendizajes. This study is part of a larger study on rare diseases (RD) and educational inclusion. The educational response to students with rare diseases, also known as rare, minority or low prevalence diseases, implies a comprehensive approach from the educational, health and psychosocial fields that challenges the inclusion processes that are developed in many schools. The aim of this research is to analyse which educational processes favour the inclusion of students with rare diseases in ordinary classrooms. The methodology of multiple case studies allows for an in-depth analysis of the inclusive processes developed in three ordinary schools in the Valencian Community that educate students with RD. This is a qualitative study that brings together the voices of management teams, teaching and non-teaching staff, families and students with RD through interviews and focus groups. The results show which processes developed in the schools guarantee the presence, participation and learning of the students with RD. The conclusions highlight the importance of the planning and coordination of the agents involved, the organisation of support, especially specific support, and open up the discussion on the dilemmas posed by the evaluation of learning

Prior research on peer literacy teaching tends to be conceptualized as peer tutoring and often focuses on the cognitive aspects of reading (e.g., skills, strategies). In this multiple case study, we draw on theories of identity and positioning to propose a conceptual shift from tutoring to mentoring to also describe the affective and relational dimensions of peer literacy teaching. In our analysis, we explore how two 11th graders positioned themselves as readers and mentors in a cross-age literacy mentorship class in a public high school in the northeastern United States. Data sources include mentor interviews, field notes, and artifacts. Our multiphase coding process identified three main themes: the importance of (a) texts and (b) relationships and reciprocity to mentors’ positioning, and (c) complexities of the mentor position. Findings suggest that school-based opportunities for youth to work collaboratively to understand their own and others’ reading processes may contribute insights into both the affective and the cognitive aspects of peer literacy teaching.

While music education researchers have examined cooperating teacher and student teacher interactions via classroom observations and interviews, there is little research on extended dialogues between the cooperating teacher and student teacher or various mentoring roles (coach, guide, model, and evaluator) assumed by cooperating teachers. During one 8-week student teaching placement period, I recorded extended dialogues between four student teacher-cooperating teacher pairs, along with individual interviews. Data were analyzed using the mentor roles in dialogues model. The mentoring role assumed during dialogues reflected the student teaching context, perceptions about appropriate roles, cooperating teacher and student teacher personalities, and their relationship. Mentoring dialogues were especially influenced by unique features of the music ensemble class.

Objectives: In this study, we investigated the effects of bilateral and unilateral deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) in PD patients on neural responses associated with two aspects of spoken language processing: semantics of action-related verbs and morphosyntactic processing. Materials and methods: Using a passive unattended paradigm to present spoken linguistic stimuli, we recorded magnetoencephalographic (MEG) responses in three PD patients in four DBS conditions: left unilateral STN-DBS, right unilateral STN-DBS, bilateral STN-DBS, and no STN-DBS. To ensure that any observed effects of DBS on the neuromagnetic responses could be attributed to the linguistic context per se and were not merely induced by the electrical stimulation, we assessed the effects of STN-DBS on linguistic contrasts within each stimulation condition. Hence, we contrasted the processing of action vs. abstract verbs as well as the processing of correct vs. incorrect morphosyntactic inflections within each DBS condition. Results: The results revealed that, compared to the DBS-off state, both bilateral and right unilateral stimulation of the STN yielded significant dissociations in the processing of action and abstract verbs, with greater neuromagnetic responses for action verbs compared to abstract verbs. For morphosyntax processing, only left unilateral stimulation yielded significant dissociations (relative to the DBS-off state), with greater neuromagnetic responses to the incorrect inflections compared to the correct inflections. Conclusion: The results reflect differential effects of unilateral and bilateral STN-DBS on neuromagnetic responses associated with the processing of spoken language. They suggest that different specific aspects of linguistic information processing in PD are affected differently by STN-DBS.

The study employed a qualitative multiple case study approach to investigate second-grade students’ perceptions of their classrooms’ physical learning environment. Data were collected through interviews, participant-generated photographs, and observations. Participants in the study were 16 students in four classrooms in three school districts. A physical learning environment tool, Assessing the Pillars of the Physical Environment for Academic Learning (APPEAL), developed by Evanshen and Faulk and published in 2019, was used to select classrooms to participate in the study. According to the scale, the top-scoring classrooms were more learner-centered (more constructivist) than the lowest-scoring (more traditional) classrooms. Generally, participants believed that classroom physical learning environments that were best for them were meaningful, offered easy access to resources and materials, and provided active learning and social engagement opportunities. Both physical and emotional comfort were important to participants. There were more similarities than differences between the participants’ perceptions in the classrooms that scored highest on the APPEAL and the classes that scored lowest. The findings suggested that young children’s perceptions of the environment can be influenced by their experiences or contexts and their differences. The results encourage teachers of young children to think about their students as actively affected by their environment and challenge them to design classroom physical learning environments that support the diverse needs of students within these spaces.

Polarisation between the least and most active pupils is increasing both in Denmark and worldwide, and the least active pupils often have poorer mental health and low physical self-esteem. However, the least active pupils’ perspectives on physical activity in school are underrepresented in the research. This study explores how the least active pupils describe the purpose of physical activity at school and how active they consider themselves to be in relation to their classmates. To establish the above, we draw on Jenkins’ theory of social identity, which points to the dialectics between internal identification and external categorisation. Three schools were selected for a qualitative multiple-case study, focusing on the least active Year 3 pupils (aged 9–10). Thirty individual semi-structured interviews with these pupils were conducted, combined with 15 days of participant observations, at each school in 2018. Data were analysed using an abductive approach. The findings showed that the least active pupils’ descriptions of why they were active mainly referred to narrow understandings of physical health in line with broader societal explanations. Further, the pupils depicted a stigmatic categorisation of overweight and inactive pupils and described them as a group they did not belong to. Instead, they identified themselves with the active pupils, for example, in stating that they were almost as active as the ‘football boys’. To change pupils’ narrow identifications and stigmatic categorisations, school professionals should focus less on health as an argument for physical activity.

To explore engagement principles and contextual conditions in high-engagement therapy sessions involving youth with disabilities and service providers.From a larger project on therapy engagement, a dyadic case analysis was conducted involving three youth ages 8-15 with disabilities and their service providers. Participants were interviewed about their engagement experiences after high-engagement sessions focusing on speech articulation, transition goals, and physical mobility. Data were analyzed thematically, with an emphasis on engagement principles illustrated by the cases.There were four service provider engagement principles: (a) clients differ in what engages them and in how they display engagement (The findings indicate the value of providers' awareness of the dynamics of engagement, their use of personalized strategies to engage clients, and the fundamental importance of cultivating a good relationship and monitoring client engagement during therapy.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONService providers may benefit from being aware of common principles underlying the co-construction of engagement between service providers and clients.Service providers can use a variety of personalized strategies to heighten client engagement, and can work to cultivate a positive relationship.It is important to monitor clients' non-verbal and verbal signs of engagement and respond to signs of disengagement during therapy.Contextual conditions affecting service providers' use of engagement strategies include the nature of the therapy being provided and youths' interests and preferences.

The purpose of the present study was to understand the nature of the link between science teachers’ epistemologies and their socioscientific issue (SSI) teaching discourse. It is important to consider this link due to the limitations of science teachers in shifting from monologic to more dialogic orientations in their teaching, despite SSI-based science education reforms in many countries. Teachers’ epistemologies are likely to contribute to the difficulties experienced in this shift. We selected three science teachers using purposive sampling procedures. Using classroom observations and follow-up constructivism-oriented interviews, we selected one non-constructivist, one moderately constructivist, and one constructivist science teacher. We then examined these teachers’ (knowledge-based and science-based) epistemologies by two semi-structured interviews. The teachers taught one SSI topic and then we conducted classroom observations. Benefiting from highly used classifications, we classified teachers’ epistemologies and discourses in the transcripts. The results showed that there were some coherences and incoherences between science teachers’ epistemologies and their SSI teaching.

Psychological assistance is strongly needed in relation to the recovery of the psychological state of children who are in conflict with the law. Semarang City has developed a school-based restorative justice program as a response to such needs. This research aims to explore the factors which could potentially obstruct the psychological recovery process of these children during the implementation of the program. The study adopts a qualitative design through multiple case studies, with the participation of three children and those close to them. The case study data analysis was conducted based on Yin's (2015) techniques, consisting of pattern matching, explanation building, logic models, and cross-case synthesis. The results show that negative support from peers, drug abuse, negative role models, emotional detachment from close friends and relatives, and negative stigma were the factors obstructing the recovery process of the participants. These findings could be essential for practitioners’ design of psychological interventions which are more relevant to the children’s recovery needs.

Purpose Social approaches to intervention for aphasia are being increasingly employed to address the functional communication barriers experienced by persons with aphasia. One specific approach is the use of conversation-based treatment in both group and two-person dyads. Although there are several methods to measure improvement for stimulation and cognitive neurolinguistic approaches, researchers have consistently indicated a need for outcome measures that can objectively demonstrate improved communication following conversation treatment. This study aims to demonstrate the utility for examining the patterns of conversation trouble source and repair as indices for improved communication as a positive response to intervention. Method The conversations of 20 consecutive participants, before and after 3 months, or 40 hr, of group and individual conversation-based treatment, were transcribed using conventions of conversation analysis, and sociolinguistic discourse analysis was applied. Measures of trouble source and repair were aggregated and subjected to statistical analysis. Results Persons with aphasia demonstrated statistically significant improvement in patterns of conversation trouble source and repair posttreatment for the rate of conversation trouble source and the length of repair. However, measures of self-initiation and self-completion of repair did not reach significance. Conclusion The study indicates that, following conversation-based treatment, the conversations of persons with aphasias were more efficient, experiencing fewer trouble sources and shorter repair sequences. These findings suggest that measures of conversation for the rate of trouble source and length of the repair sequence are valid indices of improved conversation.

Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT), an empirically supported third-wave behavioral approach for the treatment of couples, is examined in this multiple case study. IBCT was developed to help couples navigate challenging differences, so this study examines its use with couples reporting problems arising from differences in self-identified cultural identities, practices, or beliefs. The experiences of three therapists using IBCT in their work with intercultural couples is examined. Each participating therapist in this study contributes by describing one case in which IBCT was used to help the couple with existing conflicts related to cultural differences. These descriptions, provided through written responses to open-ended questions, were examined using cross-case analysis. Results include descriptions of the various stressors faced by intercultural couples, therapists’ formulations of cultural differences, change processes and change mechanisms during treatment, and similarities and differences across therapists’ reports. Specific quotations that demonstrate main ideas and particularly poignant or useful information are integrated. Despite several interventions from the public, private and NGO sectors, the sustainability of education for working children has always been a challenge in Pakistan. Setting life goals is the first step towards achieving them, and setting life goals itself is a life skill, not possessed by everyone. Children who possess this valuable skill tend to perform better in managing their careers, time, and life. A framework proposed by Cassandra Massey quite explicitly explains the various factors that working children need to consider and focus on while pursuing their life goals. It comprises eight attributes, including Self-care, Relationships, Money, Personal development, Home-life, Community, Passions, and Work-life. It is essential to know-how and to what extent these attributes affect the education and life goals of working children to understand their perspectives. The multiple case study research design was used in this study to illustrate the issue and getting similar and contrasting patterns from responses of the five cases. Findings from all five case studies that there exists a high determination and commitment towards education, and 4 out of 5 cases expressed there are high chances for them to be able to achieve their life goals. Based on findings various implications are discussed.

The purpose of this instrumental multiple case study was to explore the roles that high school music educators and the experiences they provide play in influencing high school students’ decisions to pursue a career in music education. Four bounded systems, consisting of programs led by ensemble directors with documented records and reputations for helping matriculate music education students into undergraduate music education programs, were studied. Findings were organized into the following themes: (a) formative attraction to the profession, (b) differing approaches to encouragement, (c) forms of encouragement, and (d) life as a music teacher. Specific implications for practice for multiple stakeholders and implications for future research are provided based on these findings.

Using multiple case studies, I examined how three traditional principals reacted and responded over time to the opening of a charter school in their attendance boundaries. Findings suggest principals’ reactions to competition shifted based on their perceptions of their status and competitive advantage in the market. These perceptual changes were the result of interactions with parents/guardians, staff, teachers, and students. This study has implications for how principals’ perceptions over time may affect engagement in competitive markets.

Purpose Older adults are at a high risk of falling. The consequences of falls are worse when the person is unable to get up afterward. Thus, an intelligent video monitoring system (IVS) was developed to detect falls and send alerts to a respondent. This study aims to explore the implementation of the IVS at home. Design/methodology/approach A multiple case study was conducted with four dyads: older adults and informal caregivers. The IVS was implemented for two months at home. Perceptions of the IVS and technical variables were documented. Interviews were thematically analyzed, and technical data were descriptively analyzed. Findings The rate of false alarms was 0.35 per day. Participants had positive opinions of the IVS and mentioned its ease of use. They also made suggestions for improvement. Originality/value This study showed the feasibility of a two-month implementation of this IVS. Its development should be continued and tested with a larger experimental group.

Although the effects of focus of attention (FOA) on the performance of gross motor skills are now well understood, less is known about the role of FOA in naturalistic classroom settings where learners are engaged in the ongoing acquisition and refinement of complex motor skills. The purpose of this study, the first of its kind, was to explore how music teachers focus learners’ attention on physical actions (internal focus) and on the effects of those actions (external focus). We recorded three experienced band directors teaching beginner classes (sixth graders) and completed a content analysis of video recordings to describe (a) teachers’ use of internally focused (IF) and externally focused (EF) verbalizations and (b) patterns among IF and EF verbalizations. These teachers most often directed student attention to internal aspects of performance, and they also paired IF and EF statements to clearly convey how those actions affect external outcomes. Although our descriptive multiple case study design precludes generalization, these data suggest possibilities for future studies that could explore relationships between teachers’ FOA verbalizations and skill development in music classrooms.

Most of the previous literature regarding eye movements use visual stimuli alone. However, in real life, visual and auditory stimuli occur together frequently. It has been shown that a sound presented just before or simultaneously with the visual target reduces the latency of the saccades. The present study investigates the effect of a sound presented shortly before the LED visual target for three types of eye movements: saccades, vergences and combined eye movements. Fourteen participants (6 women, mean age: 22.6 +/- 0.62 years) took part in the study. Each type of eye movements was tested in two conditions: one with visual LED targets alone, the other with a sound coming for a buzzer adjacent to the LED, and preceding by 50 ms the onset of the LED target (auditory-visual target). Eye movements were recorded at 220 Hz for each eye with the Eyeseecam binocular devicehttps://www.eyeseetec.de/eyeseecam-sci/). The results confirm that the sound significantly reduces the latency of the saccades. In contrast, for convergence or divergence the sound did not decrease the latency but it did increase the velocity and reduced the duration of such movements significantly. For combined saccade vergence movements particularly leftward, the sound had multiple effects on the saccade component: it decreased the duration of the saccade component and reciprocally increased its velocity but also reduced its latency. Such mixed effects on latency duration and velocity of the saccade component favor the hypothesis that saccade components of combined eye movements are subtended by a co-activation of both, saccade and vergence brainstem generators. The differential benefit from the sound according to the type of eye movements is of theoretical and clinical interest.

An overview of the literature shows that various types of employee death in academia are relatively unexplored. In part a dialogic response to a study reflecting upon the impact of an academic's suicide, this multiple case study focuses on organizational and personal reactions to the deaths of four coworkers at four Polish universities. To present the experiences of the participants in a holistic manner, this study is phenomenological in design, incorporating semi-structured interviews followed by thematic data explicitation. Eight thematic areas were explored yielding results that diverge from most guidelines on the constructive management of loss in the workplace.

Group-based programs have the potential to help patients manage their diabetes and prevent complications. However, participant retention has been identified as one of the major issues hampering these programs. Previous empirical studies have identified factors related to retention, such as age and body mass index. However, there has been little investigation on the factors that contribute to retention in group-based diabetes programs. This study explored the perspectives of diabetes program educators on the factors that lead to participant retention in group-based diabetes programs. A qualitative multiple case study design was employed to understand retention factors across six purposefully selected group-based diabetes programs. Diabetes educators participated in a one-time, in-depth, semi-structured phone interview. Data was analyzed inductively using within and cross-case thematic analysis. Four major themes were identified that impact retention in these programs, including individual factors, logistical factors, social factors, and program factors. The findings of this study shed insight on the factors impacting participant retention across group-based diabetes programs. These findings have the potential to inform diabetes educators on how to improve retention in ongoing or future diabetes programs.

Over past few decades, research on authentic materials has been focused on helping teachers provide their learners� teaching materials. Most of the researches in this area explore the benefits and drawbacks of authentic materials utilization in the classroom. This multiple case study aims at investigating benefits of and barriers in using authentic materials presented as a digital media used in their EFL classrooms. Document and an interview were employed to reveal the teachers� perception. The findings indicate although it was considered difficult to find and organize, digitized authentic materials helped teachers in teaching English as a Foreign Language for learners with various levels and backgrounds. Its use could help teachers motivate and promote their students� interest in learning. However, disselection and misuse of it might not meet students� needs and interest in learning. Good teachers� capacity in finding and using the digitized authentic materials could encourage better learning process and students� better learning achievement. Therefore, it is recommended that for the further study, learners� perception also need to be explored.

PurposeThe project “Public schools in change – collaboration as a resource” was aimed to strengthen professional capital (social- human- and decision-capital) in public schools and as a part of this to strengthen collaboration within teams. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the approach of linking development of professional capital to the development of team competence through facilitating and discuss the adequacy of the methods used to fulfil the purpose.Design/methodology/approachThis study was designed as a multiple case intervention implemented at four worksites. It was organized as a course consisting of four sessions among 15–20 team coordinators from each school unit. The research group provided insights and methods to increase the team’s ability to manage tasks and cooperate.FindingsBased on observations of team meetings, the study provides a discussion on the usefulness of the approach of linking team competence and professional capital. Both at theoretical and practical levels, the study finds it is meaningful to combine facilitating as methods to ensure the creation of value in organizational teamwork, in general, with the concept of professional capital pointing on the quality of the core task and particularly developed within an educational context.Research limitations/implicationsThe study provide a presentation of two theoretical frameworks and a discussion of the adequacy of linking these frameworks to the development of team competences in a school context.Practical implicationsThe study suggests that organizations and educational institutions (of teachers, physicians, and social workers) may benefit from linking professional capital and facilitating and thereby provide employees and students training in professional collaboration.Social implicationsIn a still more complex society, collaboration is crucial. The study suggests ways to improve collaboration, quality of the core task along with the relational dimensions in the psychosocial work environment.Originality/valueDevelopment of professional capital through increased team competences and facilitating skills represents a new and promising approach with theoretical as well as practical implications within a school context. Indeed, not only school teams but also teams in other organizations dealing with social- task- and contextual complexity can benefit from the insights and experiences of this study.

Prison-based dog training programs (DTPs) aim to improve successful rehabilitation after detention. However, empirical evidence for their effectiveness is lacking. To evaluate the effectiveness of a DTP—Dutch Cell Dogs (DCD)—on externalizing behavior, stress, self-esteem, empathy, and treatment motivation, a pilot study with a Multiple Case Experimental Design in six adolescents residing in a juvenile justice center (JJC) was conducted. Results did not provide convincing evidence for DCD’s effectiveness. Further research is needed to determine whether and for whom DCD could be a useful addition to regular JJC programming.
