Integration models refer to prevalent values within societies which pertain to how majority-minority groups should relate to one another (i.e. intergroup ideologies). Over the past couple of decades, much research has been devoted to understanding how assimilationism, multiculturalism and colorblindness relate to intergroup attitudes. However, the concrete effects of integration models on support for real-world policy among citizens remains sparse. Taking advantage of the current political context in France, we aimed to study how assimilationist vs. multicultural intergroup ideologies relate to support for policies aimed at countering violent extremism. Following the recent wave of terror attacks, the French government introduced a bill designed to counter islamist extremism among Muslim minorities, the so-called “Separatism Bill to Enforce Respect of Republican Values” which aims to fight “separatism and attacks on citizenship”. Because of its explicit aim to assimilate Islam to the French Republic, we wanted to test whether assimilationism could promote support for the recent law. This study aims to replicate our previous findigs. Across three studies (total N = 939), we found evidence of a positive relationship between adherence to assimilation (vs. multiculturalism; Study 1) and support for the law. This link was experimentally corroborated (Study 2), and replicated (Study 3). We found evidence for a mediating role of attitudes toward immigrants. This is the first time that intergroup ideologies were found to impact support for a real-life policy.

Final thesis on the perception of different types of veils.

The objective of our research is to establish a link between national identity and the emergence of a feeling of threat manifested by the collective anxiety of the French majority when immigrants are present on the national territory. Subsequently, we wish to examine the role played by integration policies (assimilationist, multicultural and intercultural) in this link. The hypotheses are 1. that a strong national identity would lead to a high level of collective anxiety; 2. that this effect would be moderated according to the integration policies in force.

Study on separatism law endorsment and ideologies

The study we want to investigate is based on the significance quest theory in relation to the incel movement. More precisely, we are seeking factors that could enhance the loss of significance that a man could feel. Among these factors, our attention is drawn to social networks and the humorous images, memes, one can find on them, which can easily become darker and follow misogynistic humor, or far worse.

The involuntary celibates, also called Incels, gather men with extreme misogynistic ideologies constituting a movement considered as terrorist. Indeed, several of them have resorted to violence to defend their ideology, such as Elliot Rodger, author of one of the first terrorist attacks targeting women and now considered a martyr of the movement by the rest of the Incels. Incels adhere to the idea that 80% of women are attracted to 20% of men, the latter being handsome and/or rich while they are unable to have sexual relations or love. Thus, society would be ruled by women and they would like to see a return to more patriarchal values thus ensuring a relationship for everyone. According to Kruglanski (2013, 2017, 2019) and his Significance Quest Theory, the frustration of a fundamental need such as that of understanding or control would motivate individuals to regain meaning via extreme means including the use of violence. Within this experiment, it was sought to demonstrate how the loss of significance could make people join the incel movement.

In this study we examine the relations between integration ideologies (i.e. Interculturalism, multiculturalism and assimilation), prejudices , behavioral intentions and tolerance regarding minorities in France, and emotions.

Multiculturalism can be construed in different ways with different effects on majority members’ attitudes toward immigrant-origin groups. Thinking about why the broad goals of multiculturalism are important for society might reduce feelings of outgroup threat and less prejudicial attitudes. In contrast, thinking about how exactly these goals can be accomplished might evoke feelings of threat that lead to prejudice. The aim of this experimental research conducted in France and the Netherlands was to examine the effect of these two construals of multiculturalism of attitudes toward immigrants and whether these effects depend on perceived cultural distance. The findings show that a focus on why multiculturalism is important for society is more beneficial for attitudes toward immigrant-origin groups for people perceiving relatively high cultural distance. In contrast, a focus on how the goals of multiculturalism can be accomplished has a more detrimental effect on attitudes for people perceiving relatively low cultural distance.
