Practical learning activities carried out in remote situations during the COVID-19 pandemic triggered vocational students to take advantage of the surrounding environment as a learning resource. The process also determines how their HOTS and HOTSEP are. A learning model that can accommodate the skills is needed, such as ITA (Identify problems–Think and write–Analysis and argumentation) model. This learning model utilizes environmental issues intending to guide students to understand the environment through an online platform. This study aimed to analyze the HOTS and HOTSEP of vocational students, as the basis for developing a new learning model. The research sample consisted of 61 students with 29 male students and 32 female students. The sample was selected by simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results showed that the total scores of students' HOTS (17.14) and HOTSEP (18.74) were suggested as very low categories. Thus, the students' skills need to improve actively with innovative learning models, such as the application of the ITA model.

Background and objective Problems currently occurred in the environment are caused by a lack of environmental awareness of the community. Biology students learn the environment in ecological learning. Students must explore environmental knowledge (EK) and are expected to have high environmental awareness (EA) and then apply their knowledge in daily life with pro-environmental behavior (PEB). There is a need for designing climate-change book serials for university students (CCBS-US) towards contextualized learning. This study aimed to determine the relationship between EK and EA and the PEB of biology students as a baseline for designing CCBS-US. Methods The study used a quantitative descriptive method with a correlational design. Total 136 biology students from a state university in Jakarta, Indonesia served as samples of the study. Results Research results revealed a positive relationship between EK and PEB of biology students. There was a positive relationship between EA and PEB of biology students and between EK and EA and PEB of Biology students. Moreover, 77% of students reported their EK is very high, 55% of students reported their EA is medium, and 46% of students reported their PEB is medium. Ecological learning has a vital role in shaping the EK, EA, and PEB, thus CCBS-US needs to be developed. Conclusion The study concluded that there was a relationship between EK, EA, and PEB. The study recommends the development of CCBS-US based on the survey results.

Innovation in learning is a necessity for environmental learning in 21st century especially during the new normal era of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). One of important skills to address disaster mitigation issue is Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) that can be trained using the Innovation Learning Model for Natural Science and Environmental Learning (ILMIZI) model regarding e-learning. This research aims to measure HOTS and descriptively analyse the e-learning and ILMIZI model. The research method is descriptive with survey as the data collection technique. The total sample size of this research were 176 students divided into 105 diploma students and 71 undergraduate students. The results show a very low HOTS score of students at the diploma (30.98) and undergraduate (32.02) level regarding disaster mitigation concepts. This study also considered the dominant use of Power Point file (41.38%), distractions in e-learning related to phone signals (44.83%), and the study discovered that majority of students feel more independent in learning (62.07%). The descriptive analysis indicates that the ILMIZI model is compatible for use in environmental learning concerning disaster mitigation. It is the finding of this research that student’s HOTS scores are still low;the implementation of e-learning programmes faces some obstacles;and the ILMIZI model is suitable for environmental learning as a means of disaster mitigation. © 2021, Journal of Sustainability Science and Management. Flooding that occurred recently has become a very detrimental disaster for the victims. This flood disaster is still a concern for people in Indonesia. Flood mitigation needs to be done to all levels of society, especially vocational school students. Vocational school students must be responsive in any situation because, after graduation, they are ready to work. Disaster mitigation is essential to be included in learning at school. Disaster mitigation is also related to the Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) to always be ready and alert. In measuring vocational school students' understanding of disaster mitigation, initial research was carried out related to disaster mitigation and HOTS. The research subjects were 100 students of Vocational School in Jakarta who were randomly selected. This study used Google Forms as a data collection technique. The results showed that the students’ HOTS score was still low. The results showed that the Students’ HOTS scores on flooding were still low. The average score obtained by the whole students was 43.34. The male students obtained 30.27, and the female students obtained 45.97. All schools in Indonesia should implement early mitigation education that is integrated with HOTS learning.

Environmental education amid Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic requires innovation. The pandemic situation need to improving student attitudes in maintaining the environment need an improvement by conducting various innovations and one of them is ILMIZI learning model utilization. The research aim was to improve student attitudes with the ILMIZI model. The research method is experimental without a control class. Samples involved in the research consist of 61 students with a treatment of environmental learning using the ILMIZI model. The Instrument used in this research was the attitude instrument with a scale of 1-5. The research results suggest that t-value (.231) > t-statistic (1.67) indicating that the ILMIZI model is not yet effective in improving the students’ attitudes in maintaining the environment. The pretest score (83.80) and post-test score (83.62) are not significantly different. The conclusion drawn from the research is that the ILMIZI model has not effective in improving student attitudes in maintaining the environment during COVID-19.

Environmental learning in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic requires 21st-Century learning innovation which promotes Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) of which ILMIZI is the potential learning model. The purpose of this study was to measure the students’ HOTS using HOTS Assessment based on Environmental Problem of COVID-19 (HOTS-AEP-COVID-19) and describe the syntax of ILMIZI model for the implementation of e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research subjects used were 172 senior high school students randomly selected from Bekasi City in several schools. The descriptive research used online survey as the data collection technique. The results showed that the students HOTS scores measured using HOTS-AEP-COVID-19 were still in very low category either for all students (22.83) or male students (21.32) and female students (23.82). Hence, the ILMIZI model need further evaluation to be implemented as an alternative for the 21st-Century environmental learning.

The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of implementing disaster mitigation education in schools during the new normal era of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The method in this research used descriptive research design using a survey study approach. The research instrument used was a knowledge test with the number of questions as many as 15 items. The sample used was senior high school students who were randomly selected. The level of good and lack of knowledge is determined based on the average total score. A good level of knowledge has a condition> 111.76, while a level of knowledge that lacks a condition

In Malaysia, English as a second language (ESL) students vary widely in terms of language proficiency. Their performance in writing shows a great disparity. The good students are able to write excellently while the weak ones struggle to write. The aim of this study was to validate the scaffolding models and modules for teaching the writing skills particularly to weak learners of English. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach. It was employed throughout the whole study except for ascertaining the students' performance in tests given to them for which a quantitative approach was used. The techniques for collecting data were document analysis, classroom observation, interviews and tests. Data from the lessons observed were triangulated with those obtained from the teachers' lesson plans. The findings have shown positive and favourable effects of scaffolding on the teaching and learning of writing among weak ESL learners. The effectiveness of the model was seen in the strategies used by the teachers. The teachers were competent in teaching English language lessons as they had more than five years of teaching English to weak students.

COVID-19 harms the implementation of learning at various levels, including at Islamic universities. Students at Islamic universities must use e-learning for several months until the COVID-19 outbreak ends. Students are also required to have Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) to solve problems. They are also required to have Pro-Environmental Behavior (PEB) related to COVID-19. Previous research has developed a Higher-Order Thinking Skills Assessment based on Environmental Problem (HOTS-AEP). The purpose of this research was to describe an implementation of e-learning, HOTS, and PEB on students during the COVID-19 outbreak. The method used was descriptive through the survey technique. This research was conducted in March 2020. The instruments used were questionnaires on e-learning and HOTS-AEP related to COVID-19 (HOTS-AEP-COVID-19). Meanwhile, to measure PEB, PEB-COVID-19 was used. All instruments were constructed using Google Form and were distributed to 137 respondents via social media. The results showed that the implementation of e-learning was generally effective (27.74%) and quite effective (43.07%) even though some problems were encountered. Other results showed that students’ HOTS were in the poor category (26.20) while the PEB was in the excellent category (84.82). it can be concluded that e-learning during the COVID-19 outbreak has gone well although some innovations are needed. Besides that, HOTS needs to be improved while PEB needs to be maintained.

Group investigation is a learning model that emphasizes the ability to think of students through group activities to investigate specific problems or topics. Solving problem needs an Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This is because the problem needs to be solvedwith problem analysis and evaluation, based on the competency of the students. Through this model, students can be directly involved in solving the problems encountered. This study aimed to determine the effect of the group investigation learning model on students’ HOTS in environmental learning for the topic of environmental pollution. The method used in this research was an experiment with a post-test only control group design. The sample of the research was 10th grade students selected by simple random sampling. The results of the study showed that t-count > t-table, which could be interpreted as an effect of the group investigation learning model on students' HOTS. The group investigation learning model made students more active and exercised their ability to analyze students. The conclusion of this study was that there was an influence in students’ HOTS on the use of the group investigation model.

Current environmental learning amid the COVID-19 new normal situation requires an innovation. This is due to students need various skills to solve environmental pollution issues using Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and is implemented in the form of Pro-Environmental Behavior (PEB). The innovation is aimed at supporting e-learning utilization. This study aims to delineate university students’ HOTS and PEB and examine the e-learning utilization. Method used in the study is descriptive method using survey technique. Samples involved in the research are 265 university students. The study results indicate that the students’ HOTS score is, overall, in a very low category (31.37). The students’ PEB score, however, is already in a very high position (89.88) as a form to prevent COVID-19 in their surrounding environment. The result of e-learning description suggests that there are still some obstacles in terms of e-learning implementation. The research concludes that the HOTS score is relatively low, whereas the PEB score must be maintained. Suggestions proposed from this study is that to develop teaching materials or learning media, in this context book or supplementary book can be develop, related to environmental pollution as a disaster mitigation effort amid the COVID-19 new normal situation.

Learning in the 21st-century, students are required to have a good understanding of the latest environmental issues, namely the ability of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Environmental learning at the Junior High School level in public school and Islamic-based schools requires deepening of the material by the latest environmental issues such as green consumerism. The purpose of this study was to develop an Android-based Supplementary Book of Green Consumerism (SBGC) for environmental learning in natural science subjects. The research method used in this study was the research and development of Borg and Gall development with a few modifications. This study was only carried out up to the validation stage by experts. The results showed that the SBGC was highly valid with a validation score of 3.70 and the percentage of completeness of 92.50 %. Based on the scores obtained, it can be concluded that SBGC is suitable to be used in environmental learning. SBGC has the advantage of being based on technology, based on HOTS, as well as simple and attractive. It can be concluded that SBGC can be used in environmental learning at schools.

In the 21st century learning the ability of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is very necessary especially in Environmental Learning. The problem is the unavailability of students' HOTS profiles. The purpose of this study was to describe the HOTS profile of elementary and junior high school students based on gender using Higher Order Thinking Skills Assessment based on Environmental Problems (HOTS-AEP). The study was conducted in July 2019. The sample used was 130 students, consisting of 14 male students and 18 female students at the elementary level. Then, 29 male students and 69 female students for junior high school. The results showed that the overall HOTS score of students were in very low category with the average score of junior high school for male students (17.70) and female (21.10) while elementary school students for male (20.70) and female (23.60). There were differences in scores between elementary and junior high school based on gender. This showed that the ability of HOTS students in environmental learning still needs to be improved. The conclusion was HOTS of female students still higher than male students at the elementary and junior high school. Besides that overall students HOTS are still very low and need to be improved.

The topic of river pollution is a learning topic that requires Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Environmental problems also combine with other problems, one of them is corruption cases in environmental issues is also of particular concern, so the need to instill anti-corruption values. The purpose of this study was to develop Students Worksheet based on Anti Corruption and Higher Order Thinking Skills (SWACHOTS) in environmental learning. The research method used is Research and development based on Borg & Gall (2003). The study was conducted on 12-18 October 2018 in Elementary School 2 of Jatimulya and Junior High School 1 South Tambun, Bekasi. The results showed that the worksheets developed were valid and suitable for environmental learning for Elementary students and Junior High School students with an average score of 3.47. This is because the presentation of SWACHOTS is simple but full of HOTS and anti-corruption values. The conclusion is that developed worksheets are valid and suitable for use in environmental learning.

21st-century learning emphasizes several important abilities, one of which is the ability of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This ability can be possessed by students by familiarizing students with HOTS-based questions. The purpose of this study was to develop HOTS-based questions on environmental learning based on green consumerism. The research method used is research and development using Borg and Gall Model. The study was conducted in November 2018 at State Junior High School 1 South Tambun. The validation results show that the assessment on green consumerism-based environmental learning developed has a very valid category according to the experts, and is valid and reliable after measurement. This is because the questions developed are relevant to the current environmental conditions. The results of HOTS male students 44.98 and female students 46.61. The average score of Male and Female 45.79 are still relatively low and need to be improved. The conclusion is that the questions developed have a valid, reliable and appropriate category of use in the process of learning science in junior high school.

The damage to nature and the changing situation of the surrounding environment certainly make you anxious. The role of students in safeguarding nature is certainly one of the important points in determining the sustainability of green consumerism. The purpose of this study is to see the influence of gender in the students' Pro-Environmental Behavior (PEB) in understanding the concept of green consumerism. The research was conducted in July-August 2018. The research was located at State Junior High School (SMPN) 1 of South Tambun, Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia. The method used was a survey with simple random sampling to obtain 214 samples consisted of 107 male students and 107 female students. PEB score of male students was 63.86 and 64.34 for female students. Data analysis used was t-test with a confidence level of 95%. The results of the t-test showed that there were no differences in green consumerism in terms Pro-Environmental Behavior between male and female. This shows that there needs to be an effort in evaluation by the teachers to improve the male and female students Pro-Environmental Behavior.

One of the obstacles faced in school is the low motoric skills of students in recycling waste meanwhile the motoric skills are one of the learning outcomes that must be developed. The purpose of this research was to improve students' motoric skills in recycling plastic waste. This Classroom Action Research was conducted in three cycles. The subjects in this research were 34 students of 7th grade. The data was collected by using observation method in which the skill indicators instrument utilized was adopted from Arikunto. The research was conducted in March 2018. The results showed that there was an increasing trend of students’ motoric skills in each cycle. On the other words, the demonstration method can improve students’ motoric skills in recycling plastic waste.

Student center learning leads to changing teacher roles. This resulted in a shift in the role of teachers. Learners are required to have HOTS (High Order Thinking Skill), one of the capabilities including HOTS is critical thinking ability. The purpose of this research is to know the influence of learning model of Reciprocal Teaching (RT) and Problem Based Learning (PBL) to critical thinking ability of high school students on reproduction system material. The method used in this research is quasi experiment with Post-Test Only Control Group Design. After obtained the results of the calculation of ANOVA test one way and critical data, then obtained significance value less than 0.05 is 0.001

Research about scientific literacy and metacognitive in the learning process is one of the main aspects of education with a vision to strengthening 21st century skills. This study aimed to produce a learning design as a product of a scientific approach-based cooperative integrated reading and composition (CIRSA) media with a vision of empowering science literacy and metacognitive. The research method employed was a 4D research and development model (define, design, develop, disseminate). However, the research was limited up to the develop stage. The research result indicates that the product of CIRSA learning development in form of syllabus, lesson plan, learner worksheet, and evaluation instruments were within the category of very valid and feasible to be used as a learning media for Biology as a subject at the junior high school level. The research result is expected to contribute in the empowerment of scientific literacy and metacognitive.

Environmental learning in schools should be based on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and based on environmental problems, one of which is Green Consumerism (GC). The problem is the absence of student HOTS profiles based on GC. The purpose of this study was to measure students HOTS based on GC concepts and present them descriptively in the form of profiles. The study was conducted in November-December 2018 at State Junior High School 1 in South Tambun, Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia. The research method used is descriptive research. The sample used was 128 students in grade 8th, consisting of 42 male students and 86 female students. The results showed that GC-based HOTS scores were still relatively low. Students overall got an average score of 31.55. The aspect with the highest score was obtained in the analyze (C4) aspect with a score of 3.81, while the aspect with the lowest score was on the create aspect (C6) with a score of 2.57. This is because the information about GC is still not obtained by many students. The conclusion is that students' HOTS scores are low and need to be improved.

Climate change is a phenomenon that discusses in one of the topics of Science (IPA) that could be integrated with biotechnology. The topic might be studied further in terms of ecopedagogy. The purpose of this study was to measure HOTS with the Higher Order Thinking Assessment instrument based on the Environmental Problem of Climate Change (HOTS-AEPCC) and to analyze the relationship between ecopedagogy and biotechnology. The method used in this research was descriptive with the data collection technique using a survey. The results indicated that the students' HOTS scores as measured by HOTS-AEPCC were still in the low category. Therefore, the results of the analysis showed that the topic of biotechnology in science learning was suitable. It assumed that ecopedagogy could combine with biotechnology. This study concludes that the students' HOTS score is still low. Therefore it is necessary to develop science learning oriented to climate change.

In the 21st-century, learning based on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) has been increasingly popular, especially in learning physics at schools. This learning is considered to be able to accommodate many students’ abilities, especially in the aspects of understanding and higher-order thinking skills. Through a meta-analysis study, this article discusses how STEAM learning accommodated students’ creative-thinking skills. The study was carried out by collecting articles in the Scopus, DOAJ, and ERIC databases. A total of 16 selected articles based on STEAM and creative-thinking skills keywords were analyzed through 5 stages, namely orientation, conceptualization, investigation, discussion, and conclusion. The results of the analysis showed that STEAM learning can improve students’ creative-thinking skills. STEAM can be integrated with environment concept. However, research on STEAM and creative-thinking skills has not been done much in the field of physics.

Corona Virus Diseases (Covid-19) has become an epidemic in Indonesia and even has become a global pandemic in 2020. Various impacts of Covid-19 is one of them changes learning strategy. One of them is the change from conventional learning to internet-based learning or electronic learning (e-learning). The purpose of this study was to describe the e-learning in natural science and environmental learning during the Covid-19 outbreak. The research method used descriptive method and data collection techniques using a survey through Google Form. The study was conducted during March 2020 in Bekasi city and Bandung city, when the Covid-19 outbreak began in Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that there are many limitations. Findings showed that Whatsapp was the highest e-learning media (65.54%). Related to the biggest obstacle is about internet quota in a cellular phone (27.03%). Then students think the video (35.14%) was the best type of file to be shared in e-learning. Then the majority of students (54.73%) thought that the most effective duration for e-learning was 2-3 hours. The results of this study indicate that e-learning was not yet perfect and needs to be improved. The conclusion of this study was e-learning needs to be improved and need innovation.

Metacognitive skill is the process of thinking about thinking, process of developing self-awareness, the ability to self-assess and how to learn and solve the problems at hand. An important dimension to the metacognitive process is the knowledge of thinking skills in planning, regulating, and evaluating an academic task. Metacognitive skill can be trained using a learning model, one of which is Cirsa, a learning developed by integrating a CIRC-based scientific approach. This study aims to measure and know the effect of Cirsa learning on students’ metacognitive skill. The research method used is quasi-experiment using pretest-postest nonequivalent control group design. The study involved 248 students, 8th grade on Biology subject at MTS Al Hidayah Citaringgul Bogor as the research sample. The development of metacognitive instrument refered to MAI (Metacognition Awareness Inventory). The results showed that Cirsa learning model had an effect on the students’ metacognitive ability with the sig value. of 0,000. Cirsa learning proved superior to CIRC (Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition) and conventional learning on human digestive and excretory system topics. Teaching Biological topics with a scientific approach is a demand in the K-13. Therefore, the authors suggest teachers to develop students’ metacognitive skill with Cirsa learning which emphasize on reading and scientific-based activities.

Environmental learning at the school and university levels, often still uses conventional learning. This is a problem, considering the ability of students' Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is very necessary for the 21st century. The purpose of this study is to do need assessment on learning media, teaching materials, learning materials, worksheets, and learning evaluations used in the learning environment in schools and universities. The study was conducted from November 2017 - January 2019 at several schools in Bekasi and one university in Jakarta. The research method used is descriptive method with data collection techniques using observation and interviews. The results showed that media learning, teaching materials, learning materials, students worksheets, and learning evaluations at various levels were not all based on HOTS. HOTS-based learning has been applied at the university level and senior high school but is still rarely used. This is due to the lack of development in environmental learning. The conclusion of this study is that environmental learning is not all HOTS-based.

Biology learning in schools has experienced obstacles, namely the low level of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) students. The purpose of this study is to improve HOTS students through the use of question and answer method (Q & A). The method used in this study is the method of classroom action research, with the stages being traversed as many as 2 cycles. The study was conducted in August 2018 at Tambun Selatan 1 Junior High School, Bekasi. The sample used in this study were 37 grade 9 students who were studying genetic material and inheritance. The results of the study showed that there was an increase in HOTS scores with a low gain score. The complexity of the material that must be delivered makes students who have a low HOTS cannot follow the learning well. The conclusion is that the question and answer method can increase students' HOTS on genetic topics, but the gain score obtained is still low.
