Death in Coimbra constitutes a new look at the interpretation of death records of the city, between 1750 and 1777. From the query of these sources and the memories of the parish of Coimbra, dating 1758, it was possible to reach the definition of demographic trends, such as the cycles and peaks of the annual mortality. The attitudes and behaviors towards death, religion and social assistance that characterized part of the eighteenth-century Coimbra society were at the center of our attention. For that, it was intended to assess and understand the administration of the sacraments, the burial “politics”, the work of Mercy and brotherhood and testamentary practice in Coimbra, during the reign of king José.

Simone Guidi (Rome, 1984) is currently a Researcher at the Italian National Research Council – Institute for the European Intellectual Lexicon and History of Ideas (CNR-ILIESI). His work focuses especially on the history of Early Modern Philosophy, with special attention to the Jesuit Scholastic context and its role in the genesis of the thought of Descartes. He has been an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Coimbra’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FLUC), as well as an FCT Post-Doc Fellow at the University of Coimbra’s Instituto de Estudos Filosóficos. He is the editorial coordinator of the international project Conimbricenses.org (directed by Mário Santiago de Carvalho), and the author of many academic volumes and articles. This book collects six unpublished and published academic studies on the thought of Francisco Suárez, which is addressed through accurate textual analyses and meticulous contextualization of his doctrines in the Scholastic debate. The present essays aim to portray two complementary aspects coexisting in the work of the Uncommon Doctor: his innovative approach and his adherence to the tradition. To this scope, they focus on some pivotal, but often neglected, topics in Suárez’s metaphysics and psychology – such as his theories of cognition and truth, angelology, continuous quantity – thereby developing an original inquiry into a crucial moment in the development of Western philosophy. Contents: 1. The Order of Knowledge: Fonseca and Suárez on the Confused and Distinct Starting Point of Science (21-76) 2. The Truth We Know. Reassessing Suárez’s Account of Cognitive Truth and Objective Being (77-114) 3. Is Truth a Property of Things? Suárez’s Razor on Transcendental Truth (115-154) 4. “Solo lumine naturae utens”. Suárez and the ratio angeli. Remarks on DM 35, 1-3 (155-184) 5. Suárez’s Metaphysical Investigations on Angelic Intellects. A Comparative Reading of DM 35, 4 and De Angelis, II (185-229) 6. Early-modem Jesuit universities did not offer studies in medicine, and from 1586 onwards, the Jesuit Ratio studiorum prohibited digressions on medical topics in the Aristotelian curriculum. However, some sixteenth-century Jesuit text books used in philosophy classes provided detailed accounts on physiological issues such as sense perception and its organic location as discussed in Aristotle's De anima II, 7-11. This seeming contradiction needs to be explained. In this paper, I focus on the interst in medical topics manifested in a commentary by the Jesuits of Coimbra. Admittedly, the Coimbra commentary constituted an exception, as the Jesuit college that produced it was integrated in a royal university which had a strong interest in educating physicians. It will be claimed that the exclusion of medicine at Jesuit universities and colleges had its origin in rather incidental events in the course of the foundation of the first Jesuit university in Sicily. There, the lay professors of law and medicine intended to avoid subordination to the Jesuits and thereby provoked a conflict which finally led the Jesuit administration to refrain from including faculties of medicine and law in Jesuit universities. Towards the end of the sixteenth century, a veritable Jesuit animosity towards medicine emerged for philosophical and pedagogical reasons. This development reflects educational concerns within the Society as well as the role of commentaries on Aristotle for early-modern learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The “Age-Friendly Cities” project was developed by the World Health Organization to address two contemporary issues of increasing relevance: urbanization and demographic ageing. The Checklist of Essential Features of Age-Friendly Cities that stemmed from this project is a tool designed for a city’s self-assessment, comprising eight dimensions of urban living associated with active ageing. This study aims to adapt the Checklist as a quantitative assessment tool, evaluate the level of Coimbra’s “Age-Friendliness” and analyze the relation between the Checklists’ eight dimensions and quality of life (QoL). A personal data questionnaire, the adapted Checklist and WHOQOL-Bref were applied to a non-probabilistic sample of 215 elderly Coimbra dwellers aged between 60 and 90 years old. The adapted Checklist evidenced good psychometric properties, although it was perceived by the respondents as difficult to complete. “Community and Health Services” and “Social Participation” obtained the highest satisfaction rates; “Housing” and “Civic Participation and Employment” the lowest; “Community and Health Services” and “Housing” had the strongest correlations with QoL, flagging important areas of improvement.

ABSTRACT The professions that involve caring for people suffering from emotional and physical frailty, require a high emotional investment from the care givers. This fact causes the burnout is a prominent target in professions that involve the establishment of the Help Relationship, being an important indicator of mental health. In nursing this syndrome can occur as a result of the relationship nurse/patient. In this sense, our goal was to assess burnout levels of nurses in the withdrawal unit treatment of Coimbra (UDC) of the Institute for Drugs and Drug Addiction (IDT), Public Institution (PI), as well as to evaluate the relationship with sociodemographic, professional and individual characteristics. For this purpose questionnaires were administered to all nurses of the UDC of IDT, IP. The measuring instrument used to assess burnout was Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, consisting of three subscales that assess personal burnout, burnout work-related and burnout related to the client, validated for the Portuguese population by Fonte (2011). The sample are eight nurses with an average age of 33 years. The results suggest that the nurses have high levels of burnout, and burnout level related to the cliente. Regarding the relationship of burnout with sociodemographic, professionall and individual variables, no statistically significant evidence was found. These results have implications for understanding the phenomenon of burnout. They suggest that is in the relationship nurse/patient which there are higher levels of burnout. These results highlight the need to establish relationships of trust and partnership with clients and increase insight into their nurse problems\difficulties and the ability to find new ways of resolution in order to promote mental health of these professionals. Keywords: Burnout; Nurses, Mental Health.
