Background: In addition to the psychological aspects of the outbreak in the society, doctors and medical interns are subjected to additional stress due to direct involvement in the treatment of patients and increased risk of infection, fear of transmission to their closed ones, feeling stigmatized and rejected, and working under extreme pressure. On the flip side, physical and emotional burnout over time is caused by the increasing number of cases and disease-related fatalities, work overload for an extended period of time, and lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Stress and anxiety should also be focused among medical interns and doctors. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess stress and anxiety among medical interns and doctors posted in COVID-19 duties. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted a sample size of 373 participants comprised of doctors and medical interns posted in COVID duties across India. The samples were drawn using the convenience sampling method. Perceived stress scale-10 and generalized anxiety disorder– 7 scale were the tools used to collect the data for this study. Results: Majority of the sample were under moderate stress (62.47%) and mild anxiety (34.58%). The mean score of stress and anxiety in the study was 21.14 (standard deviation [SD] = 7.452) and 8.44 (SD = 5.550), respectively, and found to be statistically significant. Conclusions: Our study confirms that medical interns and doctors face moderate stress and mild anxiety while attending COVID duties and treating COVID-positive patients. The mental well-being of doctors and medical interns should be protected while fighting with a disaster that has a major impact on society globally.

Introduction: Social phobia is the fear of social situations that involve interaction with others. It is highly prevalent among high school, college and university students. The impact of social phobia among students leads to decreased educational performance, dependence to take alcohol, avoidance of oral presentations, weak performance at clinical examinations, and development of depressive symptoms. Aims & Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess social phobia and associated factors among undergraduate medical students to contribute towards their optimal care. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted of a total of 600 medical undergraduate students. Data was collected using the Oslo 3-item social support scale and Social phobia inventory (SPI) scale. Results: A total of 600 participants were interviewed with a response rate of 100%. The results revealed that as high as 78% of the students reported some form of social phobia and about 31% of these students reported severe social phobia. Regression study show that female students have a higher chance of social phobia. Conclusions: Study concludes that social phobia is more prevalent among female gender. The overall proportion of students who reported social phobia was much higher than averages from studies in other countries.

Background: Medical colleges are accountable for training medical students to have sound knowledge and ability before they take up the professional responsibilities. Therefore, medical colleges typically use a curriculum of orations, simulations supervised practice, mentoring, and hands-on experience to enhance undergraduate's skill. In such a process unfortunately few areas of the training process have unintentional negative effects on student's physical and mental health. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess stressors among medical undergraduate students. The objectives of this study are i. To compare stressors among government medical college. Undergraduates and private medical college undergraduates. ii. To compare stressors among gender. iii. To compare stressors among various years of study. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted a sample size of 1568 participants who are undergraduate students from various medical colleges across India. The samples were drawn using convenience sampling method. The Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ) was the tool used to collect data for this study. Results: Academic Related Stressors (Mean score = 2.156) was higher in medical college undergraduates followed by teaching and learning related stressors, group activities related stressor, Interpersonal and intrapersonal related stressors, social related stressors and Drive and desire related stressors with mean scores of 1.711, 1707, 1.599, 1.385 and 1.243 respectively. Conclusions: Academic stress was the most broadly source of stress found and thus most often contributed to overall stress scores. Females show more stress as compared to males. Private medical college undergraduates had more medical stress compared to government medical undergraduates. Final year undergraduates had more medical stress followed by first year. This needs attention towards curriculum change process in medical education.

Introduction: Emotional intelligence (EI) impacts many different aspects of daily life, such as the way one behaves and interacts with others. Empathy, one of the five elements of EI, is considered to be the most important psychosocial factor of inpatient care. An assessment of EI and empathy would help health-care professionals give better patient-centered care. Aims and Objectives: This study aims to assess the various components of EI among medical students and professionals and study its relation with personal and social factors. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted with a sample that consists of 200 participants in Mamata Medical College, Khammam and Pratima Medical College, Karimnagar, Telangana during a period of 6 months (2018). A semi-structured pro forma is used to collect sociodemographic profile and the emotional quotient self-assessment checklist by Sterrett is used to measure EI and empathy. Results: There is a significant negative correlation between work hours and empathy, individuals with lesser work hours scored higher on empathy and social competence. There is also a significant negative correlation between motivation and sleep hours, individuals with more number of sleep hours scored lesser on motivation. Those who exercised scored higher on self-awareness and social competence as compared to those who never exercised. Individuals with a greater number of friends in the workplace scored significantly higher in confidence and motivation. Conclusion: The current study supports that good work relations, empathy, and exercise have a positive correlation with various domains of EI.

Introduction: Alcohol use can have negative effects on the relationships, especially if the partner's drinking is perceived to be problematic. Interpersonal perceptions and associations between partners' perceptions of one another have important implications for the individuals comprising a relationship. Aims and Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the perceptions of partner drinking problems, regulation strategies, and relationship outcomes. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted a sample size of 100 participants who are admitted for alcohol de-addiction in Mamata General Hospital, Khammam, Telangana, India. The samples were drawn using a convenience sampling method. Thinking about your partner's drinking (TPD) questionnaire and partner management strategies (PMS) questionnaire were the tools used to collect the data for this study. Results: The results of the study were analyzed and evaluated using the mean, standard deviation and by obtaining the Pearson's correlation principle. The mean was obtained separately for PMS and TPD. Standard deviation (6.473, 5.268) was obtained from the values of the mean. P value was obtained (significance < 0.0001). Conclusions: The study determines the ideology of the Indian married couples and their perception toward the partner's drinking problem and their regulating attempts. Certain items from the questionnaire were not implacable in the study group such as pouring out drinks and suggesting alternatives to alcohol use. The results also strongly established that the compatibility of the partners to take up the additional burden of the families due to the partner's negligence and they feel embarrassed to get into the public and family gatherings because of the partner's uncontrolled behavior because of alcohol intake.

Aims and Objectives: The aim and objective of this study are to study the major barriers to seeking mental health care among medical undergraduates and to understand the correlation between barriers and demographic factors. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that was conducted with a sample that consists of 100 participants in Mamata Medical College, Khammam and Pratima Medical college, Telangana, India, during the period of 6 months (2019). A semi-structured pro forma was used to collect the sociodemographic details, and the Barriers to Access to Care Evaluation Scale was used to assess the reasons for not seeking mental health services. Results: This study found that 26% of the participants did not seek any kind of mental health care despite needing it. The analysis revealed that stigmatizing beliefs, difficulty in sharing one's concerns, preference for self-reliance, and difficulty in accessing help were the prominent barrier themes among responders. Conclusions: This study highlights the vast discrepancy in the number of individuals in need of mental health care and the actual number of people seeking it. The present findings indicate that interventions are required to improve mental health literacy and knowledge of local services.

Introduction: Bullying is intentional, repeated negative behavior by one or more persons directed against a person who can’t defend him/herself. Over all prevalence of bullying in Indian schools in previous studies is 53%. Bullying is major problem in both adolescents and children. With advent of increased aggression and violence in schools studying bullying and its effects is necessary especially in the Indian context where there is paucity of literature. Aims and Objectives: The present study is an attempt to assess prevalence of bullying, identifying bullies and victims and to study the psycho-social profile of school going children involved in any form of bullying. Materials and Methods: The total sample comprised of 249 students studying in the 5th and 6th class. They were administered the Peer Interaction in Primary School Questionnaire (PIPS), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and details like weight, height and academic performance were also collected. Results: In the current study boys were more predominant in the bullies group. Verbal bullying (teasing and making fun) was more frequent compared to physical forms. Bully victim groups significantly had more emotional symptoms, peer problems and hyperactivity compared to other groups. Bully group had more conduct problems compared to other groups.

Introduction: Postnatal depression (PND) is a common psychiatric disorder and is considered a serious public health issue. It is diagnosed in about 50% of the women during first year after delivery. Objective: To assess the prevalence of PND and study the associated risk factors. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in government Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital in Khammam, Telangana from September 2016 to March 2017. A total of 150 women after delivery were included in the study. A semi structured proforma for socio-demographic details and the Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) for screening for depressive symptoms were used to collect data from women between 1st and 8th postpartum weeks. Institutes ethics committee approval was taken and consent taken from study participants. Results: Prevalence of PND was 24%. PND showed significant association with primiparous women, husband’s occupation, unplanned pregnancy and women who preferred male child but gave birth to a female child. Conclusion: PND screening should be an integral part of postnatal care, so that they are counseled early, thereby preventing future complications.

Objective: The aim was to study about the sexual dysfunctional beliefs among male and female medical students and analyze the factors in which the beliefs are more obvious. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted among male and female interns in Mamata General Hospital, Khammam. The present study consists of 156 participants, 68 students were excluded from the study as they are not willing to give consent, so the study was conducted on 88 students. The study was conducted using “sexual dysfunctional beliefs questionnaire – male and female versions.” The study protocol was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee. Results: Sexual dysfunctional beliefs among females and males showed significance of P value. In females, there is a significant positive correlation among all the variables and whereas in males, there is both significant positive correlation and negative correlation among the variables. Conclusion: Overall, findings in the current study population suggest that dysfunctional sexual beliefs are more in men than in women. In males, “Macho belief” is more evident than other factors and whereas in females, it is sexual conservatism.

Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of psychiatric aspects of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) in medical students. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted in Mamata Medical College, Khammam, Telangana, from June 2014 to May 2015. The study sample consisted of 180 medical students (115 final year and 65 interns), who agreed to answer the Knowledge of Psychiatric Aspects of Alcohol Questionnaire (KPAAQ) anonymously, indicating their gender, year of study and whether they had attended any lecture or workshop on alcohol. KPAAQ consists of 50 questions of 6 clinically relevant categories. Each response to 50 questions of the KPAAQ was assessed. Each correct response was awarded 2 points, thereby, yielding a possible range from 0 to 100 points. Results: The mean knowledge score in medical students was 44.53 (standard deviation = 11.23) without any significant differences (t = 1.171; P > 0.05) between final year students and interns, while the mean knowledge score was significantly more in 74 male students when compared to 106 female students (46.62 ± 10.58; 43.07 ± 11.49) (t = 2.103; P < 0.037). Conclusions: Irrespective of their year of study. Knowledge of psychiatric aspects of AUDs in medical students was inadequate.

Aims and Objectives: The present study is an attempt to study strengths-difficulties, and experiences of loneliness in below poverty line (BPL) and above poverty line (APL) children and compared the same between two groups. Materials and Methods: The total sample consisted of 120 participants (age range 10–13 years), 60 BPL and 60 APL children. Each group further consisted of 25 females and 35 males. The samples were drawn using convenience sampling method. Strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) and loneliness and social dissatisfaction scale were the tools used. Results: In BPL children, peer problems were found to be the highest (i.e. 25% in abnormal and 55% in borderline range). Significant difference was found between BPL and APL children on emotional symptoms (P = 0.003), peer problems (P = 0.02), and prosocial behavior (P = 0.03), on SDQ, and experiences of loneliness (P = 0.04) on loneliness and social dissatisfaction questionnaire. The significant negative correlation was found between loneliness score and emotional symptoms score (P = 0.03), loneliness score and hyperactivity score (P = 0.002), and between loneliness score and peer problems score (P = 0.001). The significant positive correlation was found between experiences of loneliness score and prosocial behavior score (P = 0.03). Conclusions: In BPL children, peer problems were found to be the highest. BPL children have more emotional symptoms, peer problems, and feeling more lonely compared to APL children. APL children have low prosocial behavior. Children with more emotional symptoms, peer problems, and hyperactivity are feeling lonely. Children with low prosocial behavior are feeling lonely.

Introduction: Professional quality of life (ProQOL) is the measure that everyone feels in relation to their work. Both the positive and negative aspects of doing a job, influence the ProQOL. The majority of people spend more time at work than they do anywhere else, doing anything else. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this research is to study the relationship between ProQOL and general health in the postgraduates of a tertiary care hospital. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study, which is conducted at Mamata General Hospital in Khammam, Telangana during a 6-month period (2017). The tools used are the ProQOL questionnaire and general health questionnaire. Results: Statistical analysis needs to be done, and the results will be analyzed and presented later. Conclusion: The current study is carried out to support the findings between the ProQOL and general health among postgraduates at a tertiary care hospital.

Background: Body shape concerns among adolescents are gradually increasing in India. What was initially thought of as a western concept is now being increasingly seen in India as well. Possibly the result of advent of media and globalization. Although research on this issue and factors influencing it are emerging in Asian countries including India,(1) the evidence is markedly deficient. Methodology: The Study was conducted among engineering, degree and medical college first year students in Khammam. Study sample comprised of 260 students, out of which there were 99 engineering, 81 degree and 80 MBBS first year college students. Body shape concern was measured by Body Shape Questionnaire. Self-esteem by Revised Feelings of Self Inadequacy scale and social anxiety was measured by Interaction Anxiousness Scale. Results: The main findings of the present study were that, there was a significant negative correlation of body shape concern and self-esteem and a significant negative correlation between self-esteem and social anxiety. There was a significant positive correlation between body shape concern and social anxiety. Body shape concern is more in females than in males (mean BSQ score in females=80.73 and in males=67.02). There was a significant difference of three variables when viewed in regard to different BMI levels namely under, normal and overweight. Conclusion: Current study has demonstrated that there is a relationship between body image, feelings of self-esteem and social anxiety.

Introduction: Transitioning to undergraduate college life can be stressful as students have to make multiple adjustments. Emotional Regulation (ER) plays a crucial role in the psychosocial development of college students. Adaptive ER strategies are important for developing resilience. Objective: To examine the relationship between emotional regulation and resilience among first-year undergraduates. Methodology: The sample included first-year undergraduate students from respective colleges (Medical, Engineering and Degree), who completed the following instruments; Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ; Gross and John, 2003) and Brief Resilience Scale (BRS; Smith, Dalen, Wiggins, Tooley, Christopher & Bernard, 2008). Statistical analyses were carried out and the findings were discussed by referring to relevant literature. Results: A significant positive correlation was obtained between cognitive reappraisal and resilience. On the other hand, expressive suppression demonstrated a significant negative correlation with both cognitive reappraisal and resilience. Conclusion: Effective life skills training program is necessary to battle various psychological in competencies.
