The article looks at the problem with reliability and validity of Diagnostical Statistical Manual (DSM) in relation to neuroscience and clinical psychiatry. Topics covered include the issue of which between diagnostic reliability and diagnostic validity should be given priority, the criticism of the DSM methodology expressed by U.S. National Institute of Mental Health director Thomas Insel, and the need for a humanistic approach that focuses on individual patient needs.
