Individuals differ in their tendency to follow or ignore feelings as a source of information to guide behavior, and it is relevant to examine these particularities. This study presents an assessment of the psychometric properties of the transcultural adaptation of the Following Affective States Test (FAST) for the Brazilian context. After translation and back translation, the adapted version was applied among adult volunteers (n=302), both sexes (208 women, 68.9%), aged between 18 and 61 years old (M=28.6; SD=9.4) along with the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the Brazilian version presented appropriate goodness of fit for the four-factor model (GFI=0.92; CFI=0.83; RMSEA=0.07) with appropriate internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha=0.60-0.72). Statistically significant positive correlations were found between the FAST and positive/negative affects (PANAS) and emotion regulation strategies (ERQ). The adapted version of the FAST presented promising indicators concerning validity and reliability evidence for the Brazilian context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to develop and search for content validity evidences of an anxiety measure for athletes. An international literature review on the construct was carried out for the construction of 128 self-report items. The procedures of judge and semantic analysis were made after the elaboration of the instrument. The judges obtained 80.94% agreement and kappa indicated significant substantial agreement. By observing the kappa of each dimension, we conclude that the judges correctly identified the dimension of the items. However, the concordance in relation to the facets did not obtain the same indicators, a result that meets the studies of the three-dimensional model and may suggest the unsustainability of the facets. In the semantic analysis the participants indicated clarity regarding instructions and diagramming, with only three modified items. In general terms, the instrument presented favorable initial evidence of validity, and complementary studies are needed to gather evidence from other sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The conceptual problem upon the unity of religiosity and spirituality led to a systematic inconsistency within psychometric research. With this article it is intended to ascertain a metrical severance between the constructs as also to understand them as research objects in psychology. A sample composed by 279 participants with ages between 17 and 69 filled a questionnaire with two developed scales as also with the Portuguese version of the Spiritual Well-being Questionnaire. Both religiousness and spirituality can be operationalized independently in two distinct scales. The two measures hold more statistical significance in assessing their own constructs than the criterion measure. There is no convergence between each construct since due the weak correlation values. This work was organized in two studies and aimed at adapting and validating the Partner Phubbing Scale for the Brazilian reality. Study 1 had the participation of 233 people in a romantic relationship, 52,4% were female, with an average age of 30,9 years (min. 18, max. 62 and SD = 9.23) while Study 2 had 217 people also in a romantic relationship, 62,2% were female, with an average age of 25 years (min. 18, max. 53 and SD = 5,98). In both studies, respondents answered the Partner Phubbing Scale and sociodemographic questions. The results of Study 1 were at the exploratory level evidencing the unidimensionality of the instrument with an internal consistency of 0,90. In Study 2, the confirmatory factor analysis evidenced a good fit of the one-dimensional model (CFI = 0,99; TLI = 0,99; e RMSEA (IC 90%) = 0,033) with reliability of 0,88. The data suggests that the Partner Phubbing Scale is suitable for future research on the phubbing partner, given its adequacy to the psychometric parameters investigated at two different times. - Abstract
The term "depression" can be used to refer to a fairly wide range of diagnoses and expressions of symptoms, so that two people may have completely different symptoms from each other, and yet both may have a similar diagnosis. Therefore, scales can be fundamental in the screening process, aiding in diagnosis and intervention with patients presenting clinically significant symptoms of depression. This article aims to discuss two current issues in psychological assessment. The first refers to different notes (description, importance, criticism) regarding the criteria in psychiatric manuals related to depressive disorders. The second theme discusses characteristics of the scales that evaluate depressive symptomatology and their specificities are discussed, since they may differ from each other, in several aspects such as basic theories, dimensionality, number of items, response type, life cycle specificities, application forms, among others. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common complaint in cirrhotic patients and may be considered a debilitating symptom with negative impact on quality of life. Research on its etiology and treatment has been hampered by the lack of relevant and reproducible measures of fatigue. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) in cirrhotic patients and to correlate with depressive symptomatology and quality of life. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 106 cirrhotic patients, aged between 18 and 70 years, both genders, literate, pre and post liver transplantation in outpatient follow-up. Internal consistency, reproducibility, discriminant validity, criterion validity, construct validity, responsiveness criterion, depressive symptomatology and quality of life were evaluated through questionnaires between January and October 2015. RESULTS: The mean age was 54.75±9.9 years, 65.1% male and 32.1% of the sample had cirrhosis due to hepatitis C virus. The mean FSS score was 4.74±1.64. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.93, and the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient was 0.905 (95% CI: 0.813-0.952). For discriminant validity, FSS differentiated scores from different groups (P=0.009) and presented a correlation with the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (r=0.606, P=0.002). FSS correlated significantly and positively with depressive symptomatology and correlated negatively with the SF-36 domains for construct validity. For responsiveness, no significant changes were observed in the fatigue scores in the pre and post-liver transplantation periods (P=0.327). CONCLUSION: FSS showed good psychometric performance in the evaluation of fatigue in patients with cirrhosis. Fatigue presented a strong correlation with depressive symptomatology and quality of life.

The sample dimension, types of variables, format used for measurement, and construction of instruments to collect valid and reliable data must be considered during the research process. In the social and health sciences, and more specifically in nursing, data-collection instruments are usually composed of latent variables or variables that cannot be directly observed. Such facts emphasize the importance of deciding how to measure study variables (using an ordinal scale or a Likert or Likert-type scale). Psychometric scales are examples of instruments that are affected by the type of variables that comprise them, which could cause problems with measurement and statistical analysis (parametric tests versus non-parametric tests). Hence, investigators using these variables must rely on suppositions based on simulation studies or recommendations based on scientific evidence in order to make the best decisions.

Anxiety is common in Parkinson's disease (PD), but studies concerning specific anxiety disorders are scarce. Essential psychometric properties of anxiety rating scales are also lacking. OBJECTIVE: To investigate general anxiety disorder (GAD) in PD and psychometric properties of the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (Ham-A). METHOD: Ninety-one PD patients underwent neurological and psychiatric examination, which included the MINI-Plus, the Ham-A and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (Ham-D). RESULTS: GAD was present in 30.8% of PD patients. Patients with GAD had longer disease duration (p=0.044) and were in use of higher doses of levodopa (p=0.034). They also tended to have more motor fluctuations and dyskinesias. The objective of this study was to translate, make transcultural adaptation and assess the semantic, idiomatic and literal equivalence of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11). METHODS:This scale assesses the presence of impulsive manifestations from the theoretical model proposed by Ernst Barratt. Firstly, the BIS-11 original version in English was translated to Portuguese by six bilingual researches. After this, was made the back-translation to English by a translator that was born in United States. Then, the three versions (original, translated and back-translated) were assessed by a specialists committee which made and analyze and comments about the process and then we reach the final translated version of BIS-11. The original and translated version of BIS-11 was applied in two samples from general population with proficiency both in English and Portuguese. This method was adopted to assess the literal, semantic e idiomatic equivalence of these versions by mean of correlation analyses. CONCLUSION: The final results of quantitative analyses show that the final version of BIS-11 is satisfactory.

HOMOSEXUALITY , *PARENTING , *PSYCHOMETRICS , *GAY parents , *STUDENTS , *STUDENT attitudes - Abstract
Introduction: Same-sex marriage and adoption legalization constitute a growing and relatively new research field. Its study needs reliable and valid measures that allow to understand the society's perception about this new family order. Objective: Assess the psychometric properties of two scalesdevised to measure same-sex parenting attitudes: Attitudes toward Same-sex Families Scale (AFFH for its acronym in Spanish), and Scale on Beliefs about Children's Adjustment in Same-sex families (CANFH in Spanish). Methodology: AFFH scale is a 20- item measure designed to account for attitudes towards same-sex families. CANFH is a 14-item measure consisting of two scales, Individual Opposition (IO) and Normative Opposition (NO). Both are Likert scales with five response options (1. Strongly Agree to 5. Strongly Disagree). The CANFH was answered by 170 college students (78 (46%) males, 92 (54%) females; Average age: 18.4 SD 0.94), and the AFFH by 88 college students (35 (40%) males, 53 (60%) females, average age: 18.2 SD + 0.84). Results: AFFH items were organized into two factors that explained 46.14% of variance with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.91. CANFH items were grouped in a two factors structure that explained 65.49% of the variance (α = 0.94). Conclusions: CANFH and AFFH scales have adequate psychometric properties to measure Mexican college students' attitudes toward same-sex families and to assess the beliefs about children's adjustment in same-sex families. The present thesis aims to know the psychometric properties of two scales intended to assess the subjective wellbeing of schooled adolescents and residents in urban contexts in Chile. The results obtained show that both the "Student Life Satisfaction (SLSS)" and the " Brief Adolescents’ Subjective Well-Being in School Scale (BASWBSS)" scales present adequate adjustment indices to the sample. However, in the case of the BASWBSS, adaptations had to be made in accordance with the functioning of the Chilean educational system in comparison with the educational system of China, from which the scale emerges. The results highlight the need to adapt the scales to the contexts in which they are applied and to verify their levels of adjustment in order to have valid and reliable data when assessing subjective wellbeing in childhood and adolescence, as well as when seeking to design interventions or carry out follow-up on specific populations Aquesta tesi té com a objectiu conèixer les propietats psicomètriques de dues escales dirigides a avaluar el benestar subjectiu en adolescents escolaritzats i residents en contexts urbans de Xile.

- Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of Reduced Sternberg's Triangular Love scale (STLS-R). 1523 subjects of 13 Brazilian states responded the scale. The results indicated that the short version has good precision and items with high loads on a single factor. Confirmatory Factorial Analysis showed invariance of the factor structure of STLS-R for sex and region, but not for relationship type. The Item Response Theory suggests that the STLS-R is informative. Items are discriminatory, but relatively easy. The results suggest that the STLS-R is an excellent measurement instrument. However, it's not recommended to leave the STLS full version. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is growing interest on the relationship between attachment and work- or career-related decisions. However, to this date, there are no scientific reports assessing adult attachment in work environment in Brazilian samples. This study aimed to adapt and collect psychometric evidence from the Short Work Attachment Measure for Brazilian Portuguese. A total of 450 adults (62.2% women; mean age = 23.8 years old) from a Southeastern state of Brazil participated in this research. Exploratory and confirmatory factorial procedures replicated the original version of the two-dimensional structure of the measure. The McDonald’s Omega accuracy indicators were higher than 0.78 for the instrument. Evidence of convergent validity was observed with a measure of attachment to romantic relationships and life satisfaction. We concluded that the Brazilian version of SWAM presents adequate psychometric properties. The objective of the present study was the psychometric evaluation of the Tripartite Influence Scale (TIS) among Brazilian youths of both sexes. The sample consisted of 475 undergraduate students aged between 18 and 29 years old (M = 20.8, SD = 2.0). We evaluated the construct validity (exploratory factor analysis), convergent validity (correlation between the scores of the TIS and measures of body satisfaction), reliability (Cronbach's alpha) and reproducibility (test-retest). The instrument presented factorial structure composed of three factors replicating the original scale factors, significant negative correlation for measures of body satisfaction (> -.21, p <.001), and showed no difference between the scores on test-retest reproducibility. It was confirmed TIS's psychometric properties, and its use is indicated for young Brazilian people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: to analyze clinical features of patients with Hirschprung's Disease (HD). Methods: a retrospective institutional case study was carried out using the medical records of patients with HD attending the Fernandes Figueira Institute between 1993 and 2003. Results: out of a total of 55 patients, 98% presented symptoms on birth, 47.2% of whom were diagnosed during the neonatal period; in 88.9% of cases the barium enema was conclusive; 69% had short segment HD; 16.3% Down's Syndrome; 15.2% other congenital anomalies; 40% were screened for RET mutations associated with multiple endocrine neoplasias (MEN2A), although none were detected; 63.6% had staged pull-through surgery on the colon or ileum; 12.72% primary transanal endorectal pull-through surgery; the main complications arising from surgery were sepsis, enterocolitis and obstruction of the intestines; abnormal bowel movements were detected years after the surgery; the mortality rate was 9.25%, the causes of death being post-operal enterocolitis and sepsis. Conclusion: although patients presented symptoms on birth, most were diagnosed at a later stage. Enterocolitis was the main cause of death. Abnormal bowel movements frequently occurred, requiring prolonged follow-up. Although rare, the association with MEN2A needs to be investigated owing to the highly aggressive nature of the disease. The clinical and genetic heterogeneity of HD necessitates the involvement of a multidisciplinary team. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To assess the internal consistency, as well as the construct, concurrent and external consistency of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-R) in Mexican adolescents. Material and Methods. The data are from two samples of middle-school students from Mexico City. The questionnaire included the CES-D-R and other scales for suicide problems, peer and family violence, and drug use. Results. The sample included 1 549 students (mean age 14 years, SD=1.2). The CES-D-R showed a six-factor structure (explained variance, 55%) with an excellent internal consistency (á=0.93), a significant discriminative power for opposite scores (z=-3.695, p<0.001), and a positive significant correlation with the Roberts Suicidal Ideation Scale (r=0.685, p<0.001). Conclusions. The CES-D-R has excellent psychometric characteristics for Mexican adolescents and therefore is deemed as an adequate tool for the assessment of depressive symptoms in large samples to detect mental health needs and design preventive interventions. In this work we describe the adaptation for the European Portuguese language of the Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R), which allows the evaluation of Dispositional Optimism as a steady characteristic. After having been translated both ways with the support and help of experts in the area, LOT-R was applied to a sample of university students (N=790), and the respective internal consistency, construct validation and concurrent validity were properly assessed. The detected psychometric properties substantiate the quality of such a tool. Factorial analysis shows that the structure of a factor is the most suitable similarly to the factorial structure found in the source model. The positive correlation between LOT-R and the Instrumental and Expressive Social Support Scale (IESSS) confirms the hypothesis about the criterion validity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. Evaluation of innovative instruments is important prior to its use in different settings; particularly, when they involve the assessment of concepts like quality of life (QOL). Objective. To evaluate the internal structure (IS), factorial structure (FE), discriminant validity (DV), and time required for completion and ease of use of the Multicultural Quality of Life (MQLI) in Argentina. Method. The sample included 100 subjects divided into two groups with presumed different levels of QOL. The Cronbach's alpha was calculated for the IC and the FE was analyzed in the total sample. The DV was studied comparing statistically the average score in a group of psychiatric patients (presumed «lower» QOL, n = 50) with a group of heath professionals and students (presumed «higher» QOL, n = 50). Data on the time and ease of use was compiled. Results. A high Cronbach's α (0.88) was documented. The factorial analysis showed two feasible solutions, one extracting one component with an explained variance of 46.7 %, and another one with two components, increasing the explained variance to 57.2 %. A significant difference between mean total scores was found for the groups with different levels of QOL. The time to complete the MQLI was less than 5 minutes and was reported by the majority of subjects (84 %) and the interviewers (90 %) as of easy application. Conclusions. The results showed that the MQLI has a high internal consistency, adequate factorial structure, and is capable of discriminating groups with different QOL levels; it is concise, and easy to use. Abstract Introduction: Geriatric assessment has been done worldwide with the aid of functional and cognitive scales. In Brazil, the psychometric features of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) have not been properly assessed in elderly outpatients. Objectives: To determine the test-retest reliability of the Portuguese version of the MMSE in elderly people. Methods: A sample of 306 people (>=65 years) who have attended a primary health care setting was selected. They were submitted to a comprehensive geriatric assessment with several functional tools including the Mini-Mental State Examination, and 105 individuals were tested again one week after the initial assessment, by the same examiners. The reliability was assessed by Cohen's kappa and intraclass correlation coefficients. The internal scale consistency was assessed by Crombach's alpha coefficient. Results: There were no significant socio-economic differences between the reliability sample and the study population. The kappa coefficient was considered “substantial” (0.79 at cutoff point = 23/24). The ICC was 0.80 and the Cronbach's alpha was 0.71. Conclusion: When assessed by kappa and ICC coefficients the Portuguese version of the MMSE was considered reliable in a test-retest model of reliability study in an elderly population attended in a primary care setting.

The purpose of this review was to clarify the adequacy of the existing measures of religiosity and spirituality at the Portuguese context. In Brazil, drug use by adolescents has been taking place in an increasingly precocious manner. In order to better understand the use of psychoactive substances in adolescence, studies have been carried out with the objective of identifying the Social Representations that young people construct on drugs. For this purpose, a scale of Social Representations of the Consumption of Alcohol and Drugs in Adolescents was elaborated in Portugal. Aiming to use it in the Brazilian public, a cross-cultural adaptation of the same followed by validation of content was carried out. The objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Scale of Social Representations of Alcohol and Drug Use in Adolescents. This is a validation study. For this, the scale was applied to 330 adolescents (13 to 19 years old) enrolled in two public schools in the city of Recife, Pernambuco. In order to ensure rigor and methodological adequacy, a pilot study was carried out based on the application of the data collection instruments to 30 adolescents, which were included in the final sample because no adjustments were necessary in the instruments. The tests to determine the construct validity (main component analysis) and reliability (Cronbach's alpha) were performed with the aid of the Statistical Package of the Social Sciences (SPSS). The sample consisted mostly of female adolescents, without children, without employment relationship, financially dependent on other people, cared for in their health issues only by the Public Health System, Christian, who reside with their parents, age ranging from 13 to 19 years and mean of 16.35 years (± 2.52). The mean for years of study was 9.2 years (± 6.16) and a percentage of 57.6% did not show disapproval. Using the internet was the most accomplished activity during free time and also appears as the main means to acquire information. As for the evaluation of psychometric properties, the Brazilian version of the scale was able to measure nine domains. Although the scale presents satisfactory total value for the Cronbach's alpha coefficient (α = 0.81), four of its domains exhibit insufficient internal consistency. When only the five domains that reached Cronbach's alpha value> 0.7 were used, the total value for the coefficient would reach α = 0.83. The evaluation of the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the scale showed that it is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring the Social Representations elaborated by Brazilian adolescents about the consumption of alcohol and other drugs. In addition, it provides an important tool for health professionals to use for research, teaching and clinical practice in the process of caring for adolescents.

This study aims to provide evidence of validity and reliability of the Social Well-being Scales in the Portuguese context. A cross-sectional study was developed with 322 adults (M = 30.45; SD = 8.52) aged from 18 to 58 years old, mostly females (65.8%). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a good model fit considering the five-factor model consistent with the original theoretical proposal. Also, additional validity evidence was obtained with statistically significant associations being found between social well-being dimensions and satisfaction with life, depression and anxiety. Reliability data also showed adequate internal consistency of all well-being dimensions. This reliable and valid scale is useful to evaluate social well-being in adulthood in the Portuguese context, not only allowing a more comprehensive approach to the mental health research but also providing opportunities of assessment and intervention focused on a positive framework.

Additionally, this Thesis investigated the feasibility of appropriately classifying families with children and/or adolescents from the 8 general/adult items only. Data derived from two surveys. The first concerns a cross-sectional population-based study, conducted in 2010, with a representative sample of 1105 households from the district of Campos Elíseos, municipality of Duque de Caxias, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Pesquisa SANDUC 2010). The second comprises the National Household Sample Survey of 2013 (PNAD-2013), which is a nationally representative survey with a final sample of 116,543 household units. To meet the main purpose, the 14 dichotomic items of the current version of the EBIA were assessed, both at Pesquisa SANDUC 2010 (Article 1) and PNAD-2013 (Article 2). The additional objective considered the analysis of the 8 general/adult items with data from PNAD-2013 (Manuscript). Latent Class Factor Analysis (LCFA) models were applied to the answers to EBIA s items to identify cut-off points able to accurately classify latent groups corresponding to different levels of FI. Results of the first article indicated four homogeneous groups of FI, with a very high degree of class separation (entropy= 0.906), whose model-based cut-off points broadly endorse those traditionally employed. However, whereas families with only one affirmative answer are usually classified as mild FI, LCFA showed that these families would be better classified if placed in the same stratum than those without any affirmative response. The second article corroborates findings of the former regarding the classification of FI. Accordingly, the following optimal cut-off points were identified in the aggregate Brazil: 1/2, 5/6 and 10/11 in households with children and/or adolescents (raw score= 0-14 points); 1/2, 4/5 and 6/7 in households with only adults (raw score= 0-8 points). From the analysis of the 8 general/adult items only, the results of the third study showed the identification of a single set of cut-off points across all population domains, regardless of their demographic composition. These cut-off points are the same as those identified for households with only adults in the second paper. Moreover, these findings clearly show the possibility to capture the severity of FI in households with children and/or adolescents even without using their specific items. It is expected that evidence from this Thesis contributes to discussions on the most suitable cut-off points for the EBIA and the possibility of simplifying the measurement of FI by the instrument in certain contexts, aiming the appropriate classification of families and, consequently, a correct assessment and monitoring of FI.
