We report spectroscopic and photophysical studies of a series of selected indole derivatives in solutions and under supersonic jet isolation conditions. All the compounds can assume two rotameric forms, syn and anti. The bifunctional molecules containing both the hydrogen bond donor (indole NH group) and acceptor centers (oxygen, nitrogen, or sulfur atoms) located in separate moieties covalently linked by a single bond are compared with the compound that does not have any acceptor center, 2-(1H-pyrrol-2'-yl)-1H-indole. The former compounds (containing furan, thiazole, or thiophene moieties) were anticipated to show solvent-dependent photophysics. Contrary to the expectations, all the compounds reveal very efficient fluorescence, independent of solvent polarity and hydrogen bond donor and acceptor abilities. Laser spectroscopic studies combined with supersonic jet techniques and quantum chemical computations have been performed in order to identify the rotameric forms and to gain insight into the changes in the molecular structure accompanying electronic excitation.

Studies of 2-(1H-pyrazol-5-yl)pyridine (PPP) and its derivatives 2-(4-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)pyridine (MPP) and 2-(3-bromo-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)pyridine (BPP) by stationary and time-resolved UV/Vis spectroscopic methods, and quantum chemical computations show that this class of compounds provides a rare example of molecules that exhibit three types of photoreactions: 1) excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in the syn form of MPP, 2) excited-state intermolecular double-proton transfer (ESDPT) in the dimers of PPP in nonpolar media, as well as 3) solvent-assisted double-proton transfer in hydrogen-bonded 1:1 complexes of PPP and MPP with alcoholic partners. The excited-state processes are manifested by the appearance of a dual luminescence and a bimodal irreversible kinetic coupling of the two fluorescence bands. Ground-state syn-anti equilibria are detected and discussed. The fraction of the higher-energy anti form varies for different derivatives and is strongly dependent on the solvent polarity and hydrogen-bond donor or acceptor abilities., (Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to help interpret proton-transfer processes observed experimentally in porphycene under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions (NVT ensemble) as well as during selective, nonequilibrium vibrational excitations of the molecular scaffold (NVE ensemble). In the NVT ensemble, the population of the trans form in the gas phase at 300 K is 96.5%, and of the cis-1 form is 3.5%, in agreement with experimental data. Approximately 70% of the proton-transfer events are asynchronous double proton transfers. According to the high resolution simulation data they consist of two single transfer events that rapidly take place one after the other. The average time-period between the two consecutive jumps is 220 fs. The gas phase reaction rate estimate at 300 K is 3.6 ps, which is comparable to experimentally determined rates. The NVE ensemble nonequilibrium ab initio MD simulations, which correspond to selective vibrational excitations of the molecular scaffold generated with high resolution laser spectroscopy techniques, exhibit an enhancing property of the 182 cm(-1) vibrational mode and an inhibiting property of the 114 cm(-1) one. Both of them influence the proton-transfer rate, in qualitative agreement with experimental findings. Our ab initio simulations provide new predictions regarding the influence of double-mode vibrational excitations on proton-transfer processes. They can help in setting up future programmable spectroscopic experiments for the proton-transfer translocations.

Proton transfer reaction is studied for 1H-pyrrolo[3,2-h]quinoline-water complexes (PQ-(H(2)O)(n), n = 0-2) in the ground and the lowest excited singlet states at the density functional theory (DFT) level. Cyclic hydrogen-bonded complexes are considered, in which water molecules form a bridge connecting the proton donor (pyrrole NH group) and acceptor (quinoline nitrogen) atoms. To understand the effect of the structure and length of water bridges on the excited-state tautomerization in PQ, the potential energy profile of the lowest excited singlet state is calculated adiabatically by the time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) method. The S(0) --> S(1) excitation of PQ is accompanied by significant intramolecular transfer of electron density from the pyrrole ring to the quinoline fragment, so that the acidity of the N-H group and the basicity of the nitrogen atom of the quinoline moiety are increased. These excited-state acid-base changes introduce a driving force for the proton transfer reaction. The adiabatic TDDFT calculations demonstrate, however, that the phototautomerization requires a large activation energy in the isolated PQ molecule due to a high energy barrier separating the normal form and the tautomer. In the 1:1 cyclic PQ-H(2)O complex, the energy barrier is dramatically reduced, so that upon excitation of this complex the tautomerization can occur rapidly in one step as concerted asynchronous movements of the two protons assisted by the water molecule. In the PQ-(H(2)O)(2) solvate two water molecules form a cyclic bridge with sterically strained and unfavorable hydrogen bonds. As a result, some extra activation energy is needed for initiating the proton dislocation along the longer hydrogen-bond network. The full tautomerization in this complex is still possible; however, the cooperative proton transfer is found to be highly asynchronous. Large relaxation and reorganization of the hydrogen-bonded water bridge in PQ-(H(2)O)(2) are required during the proton translocation from the pyrrole NH group to the quinoline nitrogen; this may block the complete tautomerization in this type of solvate.
