Proprioception encompasses our sense of position and movement of our limbs, as well as the effort with which we engage in voluntary actions. Historically, sense of effort has been linked to centrally generated signals that elicit voluntary movements. We were interested in determining the effect of differences in limb geometry and personal control on sense of effort. In experiment 1, subjects exerted either extension or flexion torques to resist a torque applied by a robot exoskeleton to their reference elbow. They attempted to match this torque by exerting an equal effort torque (in a congruent direction with the reference arm) with their opposite (matching) arm in different limb positions (±15°). Subjects produced greater matching torque when their matching arm exerted effort toward the mirrored position of the reference (e.g., reference/matching arms at 90°/105° elbow flexion) vs. away (e.g., 90°/75° flexion). In experiment 2, a larger angular difference between arms (30°) resulted in a larger discrepancy in matched torques. Furthermore, in both experiments 1 and 2, subjects tended to overestimate the reference arm torque. This motivated a third experiment to determine whether providing more personal control might influence perceived effort and reduce the overestimation of the reference torques that we observed ( experiments 3a and 3b). Overestimation of the matched torques decreased significantly when subjects self-selected the reference torque that they were matching. Collectively, our data suggest that perceived effort between arms can be influenced by signals relating to the relative geometry of the limbs and the personal control of motor output during action. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This work highlights how limb geometry influences our sense of effort during voluntary motor actions. It also suggests that loss of personal control during motor actions leads to an increase in perceived effort.

Background Studies using clinical measures have suggested that proprioceptive dysfunction is related to motor impairment of the upper extremity following adult stroke. We used robotic technology and clinical measures to assess the relationship between position sense and reaching with the hemiparetic upper limb in children with perinatal stroke. Methods Prospective term-born children with magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed perinatal ischemic stroke and upper extremity deficits were recruited from a population-based cohort. Neurotypical controls were recruited from the community. Participants completed two tasks in the Kinarm robot: arm position-matching (three parameters: variability [Varxy], contraction/expansion [Areaxy], systematic spatial shift [Shiftxy]) and visually guided reaching (five parameters: posture speed [PS], reaction time [RT], initial direction error [IDE], speed maxima count [SMC], movement time [MT]). Additional clinical assessments of sensory (thumb localization test) and motor impairment (Assisting Hand Assessment, Chedoke-McMaster Stroke Assessment) were completed and compared to robotic measures. Results Forty-eight children with stroke (26 arterial, 22 venous, mean age: 12.0 ± 4.0 years) and 145 controls (mean age: 12.8 ± 3.9 years) completed both tasks. Position-matching performance in children with stroke did not correlate with performance on the visually guided reaching task. Robotic sensory and motor measures correlated with only some clinical tests. For example, AHA scores correlated with reaction time (R = − 0.61, p Conclusions Robotic technology can quantify complex, discrete aspects of upper limb sensory and motor function in hemiparetic children. Robot-measured deficits in position sense and reaching with the contralesional limb appear to be relatively independent of each other and correlations for both with clinical measures are modest. Knowledge of the relationship between sensory and motor impairment may inform future rehabilitation strategies and improve outcomes for children with hemiparetic cerebral palsy.

Objective To investigate the use of a robotic assessment tool to quantify sensorimotor, visuospatial attention, and executive function impairments in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Setting Foothills Hospital (Calgary, Canada). Participants Twenty-three subjects with first-time TBI in the subacute to chronic phase participated in this study. Normative data were collected from 275 to 494 neurologically intact control subjects for each robotic task. Design A prospective observational case series. Subjects with TBI completed brief clinical cognitive and motor assessments followed by robotic assessments of upper limb reaching, position sense, bimanual motor ability, attention, and visuospatial skills. Scores of subjects with TBI were compared with normative data. Main measures Robotic task performance was computed for each subject on each task, as well as performance on specific task parameters. Clinical assessments included the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Fugl-Meyer upper extremity assessment, and Purdue Peg Board. Results Subjects with TBI demonstrated a variety of deficits on robotic tasks. The proportion of TBI subjects who were significantly different from controls ranged from 36% (dominant arm reaching) to 60% (bimanual object hitting task). Conclusion Robotic measures allowed us to quantify a range of impairments specific to each subject, and offer an objective tool with which to examine these abilities after TBI.

Proprioceptive deficits are common after stroke and have been associated with poorer recovery. Relatively little is known about the brain regions beyond primary somatosensory cortex that contribute to the percept of proprioception in humans. We examined a large sample (n = 153) of stroke survivors longitudinally to determine which brain regions were associated with persistent post-stroke proprioceptive deficits. A robotic exoskeleton quantified two components of proprioception, position sense and kinesthesia (movement sense), at 2 weeks and again at 6 months post-stroke. A statistical region of interest (sROI) analysis compared the lesion-behaviour relationships of those subjects with cortical and subcortical stroke (n = 136). The impact of damage to brainstem and cerebellum (n = 17) was examined separately. Results indicate that damage to the supramarginal gyrus, the arcuate fasciculus, and Heschl's gyrus are associated with deficits in position sense and kinesthesia at 6 months post-stroke. These results suggest that regions beyond the primary somatosensory cortex contribute to our sense of limb position and movement. This information extends our understanding of proprioceptive processing and may inform personalized interventions such as non-invasive brain stimulation where specific brain regions can be targeted to potentially improve stroke recovery., Highlights • Proprioception is a persistent problem 6 months post-stroke. • Brain regions associated with poor proprioception extend beyond the primary somatosensory cortex. • Damage to the supramarginal gyrus, the arcuate fasciculus, and Heschl's gyrus are associated with deficits in proprioception at 6 months post-stroke.

Perinatal stroke causes most hemiparetic cerebral palsy, resulting in lifelong disability. We have demonstrated the ability of robots to quantify sensory dysfunction in hemiparetic children but the relationship between such deficits and sensory tract structural connectivity has not been explored. It was aimed to characterize the relationship between the dorsal column medial lemniscus (DCML) pathway connectivity and proprioceptive dysfunction in children with perinatal stroke. Twenty-nine participants (6-19 years old) with MRI-classified, unilateral perinatal ischemic stroke (14 arterial, 15 venous), and upper extremity deficits were recruited from a population-based cohort and compared with 21 healthy controls. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) defined DCML tracts and five diffusion properties were quantified: fractional anisotropy (FA), mean, radial, and axial diffusivities (MD, RD, AD), and fiber count. A robotic exoskeleton (KINARM) tested upper limb proprioception in an augmented reality environment. Correlations between robotic measures and sensory tract diffusion parameters were evaluated. Lesioned hemisphere sensory tracts demonstrated lower FA and higher MD, RD, and AD compared with the non-dominant hemisphere of controls. Dominant (contralesional) hemisphere tracts were not different from controls. Both arterial and venous stroke groups demonstrated impairments in proprioception that correlated with lesioned hemisphere DCML tract diffusion properties. Sensory tract connectivity is altered in the lesioned hemisphere of hemiparetic children with perinatal stroke. A correlation between lesioned DCML tract diffusion properties and robotic proprioceptive measures suggests clinical relevance and a possible target for therapeutic intervention. Background. Perinatal stroke is the leading cause of hemiparetic cerebral palsy. Motor deficits and their treatment are commonly emphasized in the literature. Sensory dysfunction may be an important contributor to disability, but it is difficult to measure accurately clinically. Objective. Use robotics to quantify position sense deficits in hemiparetic children with perinatal stroke and determine their association with common clinical measures. Methods. Case-control study. Participants were children aged 6 to 19 years with magnetic resonance imaging–confirmed unilateral perinatal arterial ischemic stroke or periventricular venous infarction and symptomatic hemiparetic cerebral palsy. Participants completed a position matching task using an exoskeleton robotic device (KINARM). Position matching variability, shift, and expansion/contraction area were measured with and without vision. Robotic outcomes were compared across stroke groups and controls and to clinical measures of disability (Assisting Hand Assessment) and sensory function. Results. Forty stroke participants (22 arterial, 18 venous, median age 12 years, 43% female) were compared with 60 healthy controls. Position sense variability was impaired in arterial (6.01 ± 1.8 cm) and venous (5.42 ± 1.8 cm) stroke compared to controls (3.54 ± 0.9 cm, P < .001) with vision occluded. Impairment remained when vision was restored. Robotic measures correlated with functional disability. Sensitivity and specificity of clinical sensory tests were modest. Conclusions. Robotic assessment of position sense is feasible in children with perinatal stroke. Impairment is common and worse in arterial lesions. Limited correction with vision suggests cortical sensory network dysfunction. Disordered position sense may represent a therapeutic target in hemiparetic cerebral palsy.

It is well established that proprioceptive inputs from the periphery are important for the constant update of arm position for perception and guiding motor action. The degree to which we are consciously aware of the position of our limb depends on the task. Our understanding of the central processing of position sense is rather limited, largely based on findings in animals and individual human case studies. The present study used statistical lesion-behavior analysis and an arm position matching task to investigate position sense in a large sample of subjects after acute stroke. We excluded subjects who performed abnormally on clinical testing or a robotic visually guided reaching task with their matching arm in order to minimize the potential confound of ipsilesional impairment. Our findings revealed that a number of regions are important for processing position sense and include the posterior parietal cortex, the transverse temporal gyrus, and the arcuate fasciculus. Further, our results revealed that position sense has dissociable components - spatial variability, perceived workspace area, and perceived workspace location. Each component is associated with unique neuroanatomical correlates. These findings extend the current understanding of the neural processing of position sense and identify some brain areas that are not classically associated with proprioception.

Position sense and kinesthesia are thought to be independent sub-modalities of proprioception, based on neuromuscular recordings in the periphery. However, little evidence has demonstrated separation in the central nervous system (CNS). Stroke provides an interesting model to examine this dissociation in the CNS due to the heterogeneity of lesion locations and high incidence of proprioceptive impairment. Here, we aimed to determine if position sense and kinesthesia are behaviorally dissociable in a stroke patient model, and if behavioral dissociations in proprioception corresponded to different stroke lesion damage. Position sense and kinesthesia were assessed in subjects with unilateral stroke (N = 285) using two robotic tasks: Position Matching (PM) and Kinesthetic Matching (KIN). Without vision, the robot moved the subjects' stroke-affected arm and they mirror-matched perceived location (PM) or movement (KIN) with their opposite arm. Fifty-two percent of subjects had deficits in both PM and KIN, 22% had impairments in only one sub-modality (7% PM only, 15% KIN only). These subjects tended to have smaller lesions (internal capsule, basal ganglia, insula) compared to those with larger lesions affecting both sub-modalities. Overall, we observed separation of proprioceptive sub-modalities in a large number of stroke subjects, and that lesion load impacted the pattern of proprioceptive impairment.

Kinesthesia is an essential component of proprioception allowing for perception of movement. Due to neural injury, such as stroke, kinesthesia can be significantly impaired. Throughout neurorehabilitation, clinicians may encourage use of vision to guide limb movement to retrain impaired kinesthesia. However, little evidence exists that vision improves kinesthetic performance after stroke. We examined behavioral and neuroanatomical characteristics of kinesthesia post-stroke to determine if these impairments improve with vision. Stroke subjects (N = 281) performed a robotic kinesthetic matching task (KIN) without and with vision at ∼10 days post-stroke. A robotic exoskeleton moved the stroke-affected arm while subjects mirror-matched the movement with the opposite arm. Performance was compared to 160 controls. Spatial and temporal parameters were used to quantify kinesthetic performance. A Kinesthetic Task Score was calculated to determine overall performance on KIN without and with vision. Acute stroke imaging (N = 236) was collected to determine commonalities in lesion characteristics amongst kinesthetic impairment groups. Forty-eight percent (N = 135) of subjects had post-stroke impairment in kinesthesia both without and with vision. Only 19% (N = 52) improved to control-level performance with vision. Of the 48% of subjects that failed to improve with vision, many (N = 77, 57%) had neglect and/or field deficits. Notably 58 subjects (43%) did not have these deficits and still failed to improve with vision. Subjects who failed to improve with vision often had lesions affecting corticospinal tracts, insula, and parietal cortex, specifically the supramarginal gyrus and inferior parietal lobule. Many individuals could not use vision of the limb to correct for impaired kinesthesia after stroke. Subjects that failed to improve kinesthesia with vision had lesions affecting known sensorimotor integration areas. Our results suggest that integration of spatial information is impaired in many individuals post-stroke, particularly after parietal cortex damage. The result is a disconnect between kinesthetic and visuomotor processing necessary for visual limb guidance.

Background and Purpose— Developing a better understanding of the trajectory and timing of stroke recovery is critical for developing patient-centered rehabilitation approaches. Here, we quantified proprioceptive and motor deficits using robotic technology during the first 6 months post stroke to characterize timing and patterns in recovery. We also make comparisons of robotic assessments to traditional clinical measures. Methods— One hundred sixteen subjects with unilateral stroke were studied at 4 time points: 1, 6, 12, and 26 weeks post stroke. Subjects performed robotic assessments of proprioceptive (position sense and kinesthesia) and motor function (unilateral reaching task and bimanual object hit task), as well as several clinical measures (Functional Independence Measure, Purdue Pegboard, and Chedoke-McMaster Stroke Assessment). Results— One week post stroke, many subjects displayed proprioceptive (48% position sense and 68% kinesthesia) and motor impairments (80% unilateral reaching and 85% bilateral movement). Interindividual recovery on robotic measures was highly variable. However, we characterized recovery as early (normal by 6 weeks post stroke), late (normal by 26 weeks post stroke), or incomplete (impaired at 26 weeks post stroke). Proprioceptive and motor recovery often followed different timelines. Across all time points, robotic measures were correlated with clinical measures. Conclusions— These results highlight the need for more sensitive, targeted identification of sensory and motor deficits to optimize rehabilitation after stroke. Furthermore, the trajectory of recovery for some individuals with mild to moderate stroke may be much longer than previously considered.

Background Proprioception is the sense of the position and movement of our limbs, and is vital for executing coordinated movements. Proprioceptive disorders are common following stroke, but clinical tests for measuring impairments in proprioception are simple ordinal scales that are unreliable and relatively crude. We developed and validated specific kinematic parameters to quantify proprioception and compared two common metrics, Euclidean and Mahalanobis distances, to combine these parameters into an overall summary score of proprioception. Methods We used the KINARM robotic exoskeleton to assess proprioception of the upper limb in subjects with stroke (N = 285. Mean days post-stroke = 12 ± 15). Two aspects of proprioception (position sense and kinesthetic sense) were tested using two mirror-matching tasks without vision. The tasks produced 12 parameters to quantify position sense and eight to quantify kinesthesia. The Euclidean and Mahalanobis distances of the z-scores for these parameters were computed each for position sense, kinesthetic sense, and overall proprioceptive function (average score of position and kinesthetic sense). Results A high proportion of stroke subjects were impaired on position matching (57%), kinesthetic matching (65%), and overall proprioception (62%). Robotic tasks were significantly correlated with clinical measures of upper extremity proprioception, motor impairment, and overall functional independence. Composite scores derived from the Euclidean distance and Mahalanobis distance showed strong content validity as they were highly correlated (r = 0.97–0.99). Conclusions We have outlined a composite measure of upper extremity proprioception to provide a single continuous outcome measure of proprioceptive function for use in clinical trials of rehabilitation. Multiple aspects of proprioception including sense of position, direction, speed, and amplitude of movement were incorporated into this measure. Despite similarities in the scores obtained with these two distance metrics, the Mahalanobis distance was preferred.

Background While sensory dysfunction is common in children with hemiparetic cerebral palsy (CP) secondary to perinatal stroke, it is an understudied contributor to disability with limited objective measurement tools. Robotic technology offers the potential to objectively measure complex sensorimotor function but has been understudied in perinatal stroke. The present study aimed to quantify kinesthetic deficits in hemiparetic children with perinatal stroke and determine their association with clinical function. Methods Case–control study. Participants were 6–19 years of age. Stroke participants had MRI confirmed unilateral perinatal arterial ischemic stroke or periventricular venous infarction, and symptomatic hemiparetic cerebral palsy. Participants completed a robotic assessment of upper extremity kinesthesia using a robotic exoskeleton (KINARM). Four kinesthetic parameters (response latency, initial direction error, peak speed ratio, and path length ratio) and their variabilities were measured with and without vision. Robotic outcomes were compared across stroke groups and controls and to clinical measures of sensorimotor function. Results Forty-three stroke participants (23 arterial, 20 venous, median age 12 years, 42% female) were compared to 106 healthy controls. Stroke cases displayed significantly impaired kinesthesia that remained when vision was restored. Kinesthesia was more impaired in arterial versus venous lesions and correlated with clinical measures. Conclusions Robotic assessment of kinesthesia is feasible in children with perinatal stroke. Kinesthetic impairment is common and associated with stroke type. Failure to correct with vision suggests sensory network dysfunction.

Background. After stroke, visuospatial and kinesthetic (sense of limb motion) deficits are common, occurring in approximately 30% and 60% of individuals, respectively. Although both types of deficits affect aspects of spatial processing necessary for daily function, few studies have investigated the relationship between these 2 deficits after stroke. Objective. We aimed to characterize the relationship between visuospatial and kinesthetic deficits after stroke using the Behavioral Inattention Test (BIT) and a robotic measure of kinesthetic function. Methods. Visuospatial attention (using the BIT) and kinesthesia (using robotics) were measured in 158 individuals an average of 18 days after stroke. In the kinesthetic matching task, the robot moved the participant’s stroke-affected arm at a preset direction, speed, and magnitude. Participants mirror-matched the robotic movement with the less/unaffected arm as soon as they felt movement in their stroke affected arm. Results. We found that participants with visuospatial inattention (neglect) had impaired kinesthesia 100% of the time, whereas only 59% of participants without neglect were impaired. For those without neglect, we observed that a higher percentage of participants with lower but passing BIT scores displayed impaired kinesthetic behavior (78%) compared with those participants who scored perfect or nearly perfect on the BIT (49%). Conclusions. The presence of visuospatial neglect after stroke is highly predictive of the presence of kinesthetic deficits. However, the presence of kinesthetic deficits does not necessarily always indicate the presence of visuospatial neglect. Our findings highlight the importance of assessment and treatment of kinesthetic deficits after stroke, especially in patients with visuospatial neglect.

Kinesthesia is our sense of limb motion, and allows us to gauge the speed, direction, and amplitude of our movements. Over half of stroke survivors have significant impairments in kinesthesia, which leads to greatly reduced recovery and function in everyday activities. Despite the high reported incidence of kinesthetic deficits after stroke, very little is known about how damage beyond just primary somatosensory areas affects kinesthesia. Stroke provides an ideal model to examine structure-function relationships specific to kinesthetic processing, by comparing lesion location with behavioral impairment. To examine this relationship, we performed voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping and statistical region of interest analyses on a large sample of sub-acute stroke subjects (N = 142) and compared kinesthetic performance with stroke lesion location. Subjects with first unilateral, ischemic stroke underwent neuroimaging and a comprehensive robotic kinesthetic assessment (~9 days post-stroke). The robotic exoskeleton measured subjects' ability to perform a kinesthetic mirror-matching task of the upper limbs without vision. The robot moved the stroke-affected arm and subjects' mirror-matched the movement with the unaffected arm. We found that lesions both within and outside primary somatosensory cortex were associated with significant kinesthetic impairments. Further, sub-components of kinesthesia were associated with different lesion locations. Impairments in speed perception were primarily associated with lesions to the right post-central and supramarginal gyri whereas impairments in amplitude of movement perception were primarily associated with lesions in the right pre-central gyrus, anterior insula, and superior temporal gyrus. Impairments in perception of movement direction were associated with lesions to bilateral post-central and supramarginal gyri, right superior temporal gyrus and parietal operculum. All measures of impairment shared a common association with damage to the right supramarginal gyrus. These results suggest that processing of kinesthetic information occurs beyond traditional sensorimotor areas. Additionally, this dissociation between kinesthetic sub-components may indicate specialized processing in these brain areas that form a larger distributed network.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an excellent treatment for tremor and is generally thought to be reversible by turning off stimulation. For tremor, DBS is implanted in the ventrointermedius (Vim) nucleus of the thalamus, a region that relays proprioceptive information for movement sensation (kinaesthesia). Gait disturbances have been observed with bilateral Vim DBS, but the long-term effects on proprioceptive processing are unknown. We aimed to determine whether Vim DBS surgical implantation or stimulation leads to proprioceptive deficits in the upper limb. We assessed two groups of tremor subjects on measures of proprioception (kinaesthesia, position sense) and motor function using a robotic exoskeleton. In the first group (Surgery), we tested patients before and after implantation of Vim DBS, but before DBS was turned on to determine if proprioceptive deficits were inherent to tremor or caused by DBS implantation. In the second group (Stim), we tested subjects with chronically implanted Vim DBS ON and OFF stimulation. Compared to controls, there were no proprioceptive deficits before or after DBS implantation in the Surgery group. Surprisingly, those that received chronic long-term stimulation (LT-stim, 3-10 years) displayed significant proprioceptive deficits ON and OFF stimulation not present in subjects with chronic short-term stimulation (ST-stim, 0.5-2 years). LT-stim had significantly larger variability and reduced workspace area during the position sense assessment. During the kinesthetic assessment, LT-stim made significantly larger directional errors and consistently underestimated the speed of the robot, despite generating normal movement speeds during motor assessment. Chronic long-term Vim DBS may potentially disrupt proprioceptive processing, possibly inducing irreversible plasticity in the Vim nucleus and/or its network connections. Our findings in the upper limb may help explain some of the gait disturbances seen by others following Vim DBS

An eye position signal scales the amplitude of compensatory eye velocity in the translational vestibulo-ocular reflex (TVOR). To investigate the origin of such a modulatory signal, we studied the kinematics of the fore-aft TVOR as rhesus monkeys pursued a horizontally moving target at velocities between 0.5 and 30°/s. We found that the “V-shaped” curve of the fore-aft TVOR amplitude as a function of eye position was shifted opposite to the direction of pursuit eye movement. As a result, the tip of the V-shaped curve that occurred close to zero eye position during steady-state fixation was shifted to the right during leftward pursuit and to the left during rightward pursuit eye movements. The faster the pursuit velocity the larger the observed shift. These results suggest that the scaling of the TVOR can precede actual eye position changes by several tens of milliseconds, which averaged 169 ± 87 ms in three rhesus monkeys. Thus, central motor commands, rather than low-level efference copy or proprioceptive information, may be the signals scaling TVOR amplitude.

Background Proprioception is the sensation of position and movement of our limbs and body in space. This sense is important for performing smooth coordinated movements and is impaired in approximately 50% of stroke survivors. In the present case series we wanted to determine how discrete stroke lesions to areas of the brain thought to be critical for somatosensation (thalamus, posterior limb of internal capsule, primary somatosensory cortex and posterior parietal cortex) would affect position sense and kinesthesia in the acute stages post-stroke. Given the known issues with standard clinical measures of proprioception (i.e. poor sensitivity and reliability) we used more modern quantitative robotic assessments to measure proprioception. Methods Neuroimaging (MRI, n = 10 or CT, n = 2) was performed on 12 subjects 2–10 days post-stroke. Proprioception was assessed using a KINARM robot within the same time frame. Visually guided reaching was also assessed to allow us to compare and contrast proprioception with visuomotor performance. Results and Conclusions Proprioceptive impairments were observed in 7 of 12 subjects. Thalamic lesions (n = 4) were associated with position sense (n = 1) or position sense and kinesthesia (n = 1) impairments. Posterior limb of the internal capsule lesions (n = 4) were associated with primarily position sense (n = 1) or kinesthesia (n = 2) impairments. Lesions affecting primary somatosensory cortex and posterior parietal cortex (n = 2) were associated with significant position sense and kinesthesia impairments. All subjects with damage to hypothesized structures displayed impairments with performance on the visually guided reaching task. Across the proprioceptive tasks, we saw that position sense and kinesthesia were impaired to differing degrees, suggesting a potential dissociation between these two components of proprioception.

Background and Purpose— Kinesthesia, the sense of body motion, is essential to proper control and execution of movement. Despite its importance for activities of daily living, no current clinical measures can objectively measure kinesthetic deficits. The goal of this study was to use robotic technology to quantify prevalence and severity of kinesthetic deficits of the upper limb poststroke. Methods— Seventy-four neurologically intact subjects and 113 subjects with stroke (62 left-affected, 51 right-affected) performed a robot-based kinesthetic matching task with vision occluded. The robot moved the most affected arm at a preset speed, direction, and magnitude. Subjects were instructed to mirror-match the movement with their opposite arm (active arm). Results— A large number of subjects with stroke were significantly impaired on measures of kinesthesia. We observed impairments in ability to match movement direction (69% and 49% impaired for left- and right-affected subjects, respectively) and movement magnitude (42% and 31%). We observed impairments to match movement speed (32% and 27%) and increased response latencies (48% and 20%). Movement direction errors and response latencies were related to clinical measures of function, motor recovery, and dexterity. Conclusions— Using a robotic approach, we found that 61% of acute stroke survivors (n=69) had kinesthetic deficits. Additionally, these deficits were highly related to existing clinical measures, suggesting the importance of kinesthesia in day-to-day function. Our methods allow for more sensitive, accurate, and objective identification of kinesthetic deficits after stroke. With this information, we can better inform clinical treatment strategies to improve poststroke rehabilitative care and outcomes.
