This paper focuses on validating a numerical modelling of woven materials subjected to ballistic impact based on experimental data. Studied impact system is a 3D warp interlock fabric (4 layers of angle interlock – through the thickness) and FSP projectile (Fragment Simulating Projectile). Numerical prediction is compared with ballistic tests on data obtained from ultra-rapid camera in two typical impact cases: no perforation and perforation. Effect of deformation rate is investigated by using both mechanical properties of yarn in static and dynamic states for numerical modelling. The numerical model using dynamic parameters shows a better prediction of impact behaviour of the 3D woven fabric than the one using static parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ballistic performance of an Al alloy AA7020-T651 (AlZn4.5Mg1, 3.4335) against fragment-simulating projectiles (FSPs) is investigated at impact velocities between 900 m/s and 1500 m/s. The target plates are considered as thick regarding the ratio between the specimen thickness (40 mm) and the projectile diameter (20 mm). With increasing impact velocities, the observed failure modes of the target plates change from plugging to discing. The stress state leading to the discing formation has been described and numerically modeled by the Lagrangian approach. In order to understand the mechanisms that occur in the material under highly dynamic loadings, its mechanical, thermal and micro-structural properties are discussed. The experimental conditions (thick target, penetrator of a specific shape, high-velocity impacts) allow the authors to draw conclusions, which are complementary to those that resulted from investigations of semi-thick and thin target plates under ballistic impacts in a lower velocity range. A numerical technique for the simulation of pre-stressed confined ceramic targets under long rod projectile (LRP) impact, using explicit software, AUTODYN ® , is proposed. The proposed model is validated by comparing the ballistic performance results with the available experimental data in the literature. Impact simulations of the confined ceramic targets with different pre-stress conditions, namely radial, axial and hydrostatic, as well as without pre-stress for benchmarking are reported. The effects of these different pre-stress conditions on the ballistic performance of the ceramic target are explored. The upper limits of transition velocity for the targets of different pre-stress conditions are obtained. It is shown that dwell of the LRP on the ceramic interface is influenced by the pressure, obtained from pre-stressing, at the initial failure position in SiC target. In practical forensic casework, backspatter recovered from shooters' hands can be an indicator of self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head. In such cases, backspatter retrieved from inside the barrel indicates that the weapon found at the death scene was involved in causing the injury to the head. However, systematic research on the aspects conditioning presence, amount and specific patterns of backspatter is lacking so far. Herein, a new concept of backspatter investigation is presented, comprising staining technique, weapon and target medium: the 'triple contrast method' was developed, tested and is introduced for experimental backspatter analysis. First, mixtures of various proportions of acrylic paint for optical detection, barium sulphate for radiocontrast imaging in computed tomography and fresh human blood for PCR-based DNA profiling were generated (triple mixture) and tested for DNA quantification and short tandem repeat (STR) typing success. All tested mixtures yielded sufficient DNA that produced full STR profiles suitable for forensic identification. Then, for backspatter analysis, sealed foil bags containing the triple mixture were attached to plastic bottles filled with 10 % ballistic gelatine and covered by a 2-3-mm layer of silicone. To simulate backspatter, close contact shots were fired at these models. Endoscopy of the barrel inside revealed coloured backspatter containing typable DNA and radiographic imaging showed a contrasted bullet path in the gelatine. Cross sections of the gelatine core exhibited cracks and fissures stained by the acrylic paint facilitating wound ballistic analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decades before Newton’s Principia ushered in the age of modern science, Aristotelian physics faced a serious challenge against its weakest point, in the quest to construct a new theory of projectile motion. Yet how were such new principles of motion conceived, without reference to an established theory of mechanics? This paper explores the conceptual space between the rejection of Aristotle’s physics and the appearance of Newton’s physics in which people such as Harriot and Galileo sought new ways to understand mechanical phenomena. This paper seeks to show that both Harriot and Galileo looked to the (early seventeenth-century) zeitgeist of accepting the law of reflection as a law of oblique projection-rebound for all material bodies, for their foundational (non-Aristotelian) conceptual resource. The kinematics and dynamics of light’s compound, oblique motion had been developed over centuries within optics, and constituted the ‘ideal’ resource for novel analyses of oblique projectile motion. Whereas Harriot’s inclusion of air resistance restricted the generalizability of optical principles to his simplest case, the upright parabola, Galileo’s idealized analysis of projectile motion in a vacuum represented all cases of projectile motion as upright parabolas. BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography use is increasing in emergency departments, and ultrasound education is now recommended in resident training. Ultrasound phantoms are used in many institutions for training purposes. The purpose of this study is to describe an inexpensive and simple method to create ultrasound-imaging models for the purpose of education and practice using clear ballistic gel. METHODS: Clear ballistic gel is used to simulate tissue for firing practice and other military evaluations. RESULTS: The transparent and durable ultrasound phantom we produced was clear and contained four vessel lumens. The images obtained using the phantom were of high quality and compared well to normal sonographic anatomy. CONCLUSIONS: The clear ballistic brand gel is unique because it is inexpensive, does not dry out, does not decay, is odorless, and is reusable. Based on its intrinsic mass and velocity, a bullet has an upper limit of wounding potential. Actual wound severity is a function of the bullet construction and trajectory, as well as the properties of the tissues traversed. Interpreting physicians must evaluate the bullet trajectory and describe patterns of injury resulting from the effect of energy transfer from the projectile into living tissue. The concept of ballistically equivalent metals for ductile plate perforation has been defined and demonstrated for five aluminium alloys. Heuristic derivation of a semi-empirical relation between specific cavitation energy s c and hole slenderness ratio h / D (the ratio between plate thickness h and projectile nose base diameter D which is also known as the normalized plate thickness) has exposed a logarithmic dependence which is verified by experimental data. A closed-form logarithmic expression for s c which takes into account the h / D effect has led to a closed-form formula for the ballistic limit. The expression for s c is based on the spherical cavitation yield stress Y c S which serves as a scaling yield stress for strain-hardening (softening) response. It is found that ballistically equivalent metals should have practically the same values of Y c S and elastic modulus. The perforation of aluminium targets by 7.62 mm APM2 bullets is discussed and vast amount of experimental data is used to validate the particular ballistic limit formula. Application of the closed-form model is also demonstrated with connection to the more general concept of ballistically equivalent targets . The h / D effect on perforation of multilayered targets is examined and it is found that for ductile plate perforation the ballistic limit of a monolithic target is higher than the ballistic limit of any combination of its air-gapped parts. Ductile thermoplastics, for example Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), are of interest for their impact energy absorbing capabilities. While the impact perforation mechanisms of metallic targets have been investigated in some detail, far less progress has been made towards understanding the impact resistance of ductile polymers. The aim of this investigation is to identify the relationship between the projectile tip geometry and impact energy absorption of semi-crystalline thermoplastics. The focus of the study is light-weight monolithic plates of extruded polymer impacted normally by rigid projectiles at velocities up to 100 ms −1 . Three polymers will be considered: Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). Polyethylene provides a convenient test material, as variations in microstructure provide a contrast in mechanical properties, without significant variations in density. Three distinct projectile nose shapes are considered: blunt, hemi-spherical and conical. For a conical tip, perforation occurs by ductile hole expansion. For this nose shape the high yield strength and strain rate sensitivity of HDPE offers an advantage over the other two polyethylenes. Perforation by blunt and hemi-spherical projectiles is more sensitive to deformation localisation. The high strain hardening of UHMWPE, which increases with strain rate, results in a significantly greater impact resistance than either HDPE or LDPE. The perforation mechanisms and energy absorption of these PE plates are contrasted with those of thin aluminium alloy targets that have the same total mass. UHMWPE outperforms these metallic targets for all three projectile nose shapes. Finally, the influence of target thickness on the impact perforation of LDPE is considered. In this study, the penetration behaviour of a Mild Steel Cored (MSC) round, 7.62 mm in diameter and 39 mm in length, commonly known as the AK47 round, was studied since it still forms an important part of the threat spectrum for personnel body armour systems. Likewise, boron carbide strike face materials were selected since this armour material is often the material of choice for ultralightweight body armour systems for protection against this particular threat. The presence of two, relatively soft, intermediate materials (the copper jacket and filler material of the bullet, and a fibre-reinforced polymer cladding layer on the ceramic) between the mild steel core and the boron carbide target was examined using reverse ballistics techniques, flash x-radiography and round recovery measurements. This was supported by selective numerical simulations using the computer code ANSYS-AUTODYN. It was found that stripping of the jacket, from the AK47 MSC rounds, makes a difference to its penetrating ability: the mild steel core is significantly reduced in length, and mass, when the jacket is not present. The magnitude of this effect is much greater than previously reported for high-strength steel-cored rounds and for tungsten carbide-cored rounds. The penetration event appears to be a twostage process: mushrooming of the mild steel core on, or near, the surface of the ceramic, followed by a linear erosion process as the core penetrates the ceramic itself. This paper proposes a simple formulation for the impact analysis of a deformable projectile on reinforced concrete targets. This approach assumes the presence of soft strikers and rigid targets. Based on an energy balance, it aims to predict a perforation limit for different targets under soft impacts. The procedure employed is validated by means of tests performed on a rigid target (pendulum test) and reinforced concrete slabs. The article discusses various estimations of the crushing force of projectiles, as derived from experimental results and numerical approaches. The efficiency of simplified approaches is highlighted from an engineering point of view. The limit between soft and hard impacts is also analyzed according to a recent criterion. Ballistic performance of an armour steel at different tempering conditions against a tungsten heavy alloy long rod kinetic energy projectile has been investigated. The ballistic performance was found to increase with decreasing tempering temperature but the performance increments were not proportional to the strength increase caused by the tempering. Both target and projectile underwent fragmentation at the penetration interface in all the three targets. Apart from the strength target material deformation behaviour also showed considerable influence on ballistic performance. The database for depth of penetration by projectiles into semi-infinite targets is quite extensive. The objective is to use the experimental semi-infinite penetration data to predict finite-thickness target effects. Similitude considerations are used to represent penetration response as a function of a normalized impact velocity, which is the ratio of the penetration pressure to the target strength. Then, a least-squares regression analysis methodology was applied to the normalized experimental data to provide an analytic expression for the normalized depth of penetration as a function of the normalized impact velocity over a very large velocity range, typically a few hundred meters per second to over 3500 m/s. We use the analytic expression, along with some simplifying assumptions, to estimate ballistic limit thickness T 50 and/or the ballistic limit velocity V 50 . If a target is overmatched, i.e., perforated by the projectile, an estimate is also made for the projectile residual velocity and residual length. The experimental data on which the regression fit is based consists of L / D 10 projectiles, so a procedure is also developed to account for different projectile aspect ratios. In this paper an experimental and numerical work is reported concerning the process of perforation of thin steel plates using different projectile nose shapes. The main goal is to analyze how the projectile shape may change the ballistic properties of materials. A wide range of impact velocities from 35 to 180 m/s has been covered during the tests. All the projectiles were 13 mm in diameter and the targets were 1 mm thick, as such the projectile can be regarded as rigid and the target sheets were of interstitial-free (IF) steel. The mass ratio (projectile mass/steel sheet mass) and the ratio between the span of the steel sheet and the diameter of the projectile were kept constant, equal to 0.38 and 3.85 respectively. To define the thermoviscoplastic behavior of the target material, the Rusinek-Klepaczko (RK) constitutive model [1] was used. The complete identification of the material constants was done based on a rigorous material characterization. Numerical simulations of some experimental tests were carried out using a non-linear finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. In this paper, the behavior of multi-layered Alumina ceramic armor against high velocity projectile has been considered and conoid failure of multi-layered ceramic-epoxy armor has been simulated by means of Johnson & Holmquist constitutive relation in LS-Dyna software. As a result, the conoid failure of top layer ceramic causes the impact pressure to decrease in back layer, and consequently the epoxy interface transfers the pressure distribution between ceramic layers, causing growth and propagation of conoid failure thus distributing the pressure in a larger area, finally resisting against projectile penetration in the armor. Simulation results illustrate that by choosing the proper minimum and maximum thickness of ceramic layers and proper layering of them with thin layers on top backed by thick ceramic layers, higher ballistic performance will be available in designed armors and generally an armor with layered configuration will have higher ballistic resistance than monolithic ceramic tile with/without backing. According to the results, bi-layer ceramic armor with 25% lesser thickness with no backing in comparison with monolithic ceramic layer with backing causes 14% more erosion and 18% less penetration of projectile. The fundamental material response of a viscoelastic material when impacted by a ballistic projectile has important implication for the defense, law enforcement, and medical communities particularly for the evaluation of protective systems. In this paper, we systematically vary the modulus and toughness of a synthetic polymer gel to determine their respective influence on the velocity-dependent penetration of a spherical projectile. The polymer gels were characterized using tensile, compression, and rheological testing taking special care to address the unique challenges associated with obtaining high fidelity mechanical data on highly conformal materials. The depth of penetration data was accurately described using the elastic Froude number for viscoelastic gels ranging in Young’s modulus from ~60 to 630 kPa. The minimum velocity of penetration was determined to scale with the gel toughness divided by the gel modulus, a qualitative estimate for the zone of deformation size scale upon impact. We anticipate that this work will provide insight into the critical material factors that control ballistic penetration behavior in soft materials and aid in the design and development of new ballistic testing media. In this research effort, ballistic performance of a quenched and tempered steel was investigated. Low alloy steel was selected where austenization, quenching and finally tempering at 600°C were applied to it. Thereafter, the heat-treated steel was shot with armour piercing 7.62 mm calibre and the occurrence of failure, after the interaction between the projectile and the steel, was investigated. The shot was performed at zero degree (0°) obliquity with a projectile velocity of 830m/s. After the shot, microstructural and fractographical examinations were carried out on the sample taken from the perforated region using scanning electron microscopes to determine the matrix phase and secondary phases. It was observed that the steels had tempered martensitic-bainitic matrices after heat treatments; a crater was formed on the front side of the steel; deformed and transformed adiabatic shear bands had an effect on the crack formation and propagation in the matrix; and perforation mode of the steels was typical petalling. In this study, experimental tests were performed to evaluate the effects of axisymmetric cylindrical projectile nose shapes and initial velocities on ballistic performance of laminated woven glass epoxy composites. Projectile initial velocity and nose sharpness changes, absorbed energy, delamination area, etc. are investigated by six blunt, hemispherical, conical and ogival projectiles. Hand lay-up method has been used to manufacture composite targets with 18 layers of 2D woven glass fibers of 45% fiber volume fraction. The epoxy system is made of epon 828 resin with jeffamine D400 as the curing agent. The results show that the maximum influence of projectile geometry on target behavior occurs in ballistic limit area. In this range of initial velocity, ogival (CRH=2.5) and blunt projectiles show the best and the worst ballistic performance. The delamination area decreases as the projectile nose sharpness increases or its initial velocity decreases. Ballistic curves for different projectiles show that the difference between projectiles behavior decreases in higher impact velocities. Because of target shear failure in blunt projectile impact, the amount of target absorbed energy for this projectile is less than other projectiles in higher impact velocities away from ballistic limit velocity. Future enhanced lethal effects at the infantry squad level likely include precision guided technologies. The focus of this study is maneuvering projectiles launched from man-portable weapon systems. A novel guided projectile concept is proposed for achieving control authority requirements in the challenging environment of low-dynamic pressure, small size, high launch loads, spin stabilization, and low cost. This new maneuver concept is based on a rotating wing actuator. Experimental and advanced computational aerodynamics techniques were applied. Aerodynamic models and projectile flight mechanics were derived to enable flight simulation. Assessment of ballistic delivery accuracy, based on physics-based models of the delivery process, was undertaken to quantify control authority requirements. The asymmetric radial crack patterns that occur in brittle targets when impacted by high velocity projectiles are explained using a Phenomenological Mechanochemistry of Damage (PMD) engineering model. The developed model, which constitutes a simplification of the generalized PMD framework, reveals an energy instability during failure of brittle materials configured in a purely symmetric geometry and impact configuration. The underlying cause of the instability is due to the competition between stored elastic energy and the energy associated with new surface creation through broken chemical bonds. The instability manifests itself in the form of asymmetric radial cracking in the brittle target. The model is built upon the general PMD framework and assumes the target material is sufficiently brittle that strains are small and linear elasticity is applicable. Furthermore, the impact geometry is assumed to be purely symmetric, which leads to a reduction of the geometry to a one-dimensional radial configuration. To simplify the complexity of moving boundary treatment in the two-phase flow numerical simulation and improve the computational accuracy of moving boundary treatment, a two-dimensional twophase flow model based on ALE method is established. The governing equations are discretized with the TVD-type MUSCL scheme to obtain a second order accuracy in finite volume form. A two-step and fourthorder Runge-Kutta method is used to solve the source terms. The dynamic mesh update method and numerical method are verified by a standard test with the exact solution. The numerical application on a large caliber guided projectile shows the complete development and the two-phase flow characteristics of the interior ballistic process. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The effects of different ignition conditions on interior ballistic performance are investigated. At present, the use of refined numerical simulation is gaining more and more importance, especially in extreme load cases where large experimental test programmes are not feasible. A validated numerical methodology can be exploited to investigate critical behaviour as a “virtual test”. According to this premise, a numerical investigation is presented in this work to study the ballistic resistance of Kevlar29-Epoxy fabric plates subjected to impacts of small calibre projectiles, armour piercing (AP), ball type, and a blunt shaped projectile (BSP), all with a 7.62 mm diameter. The numerical models were developed using the explicit finite element code LS - DYNA. The composite plate is 5 mm thick, made up of 12 layers. The fabric is impregnated in Epoxy matrix, to guarantee both structural and ballistic resistance, and is a 2D plain-weave. The mechanical properties of the projectiles’ deformable materials were modelled by means of the Johnson-Cook plasticity model, which also includes the failure criterion. The composite plate is modelled using a mixed Macro-homogenous / Meso-heterogeneous approach. In particular, the area around the impact adopts the Meso-heterogeneous modelling, in which the woven yarns and the matrix are separate parts able to interact, to increase the efficiency of the numerical methodology, allowing the modelling of the friction between the yarns, the delamination and the fibre-matrix debonding. This method needs to assign separately the mechanical properties to the fabric and the matrix as well as the damage criteria for the yarns, the matrix and the delamination. In the Macro-homogenous approach, which models the remainder of the composite plate, the yarns and the matrix are considered as a unique homogenous mean, to which equivalent orthotropic mechanical properties of the impregnated fabric are assigned. Polymer composites comprising ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHWMPE) fibers in a compliant matrix are now widely used in ballistic applications with varying levels of success. This is primarily due to a poor understanding of the mechanics of penetration of these composites in ballistic protection systems. In this study, we report experimental observations of the penetration mechanisms in four model systems impacted by a 12.7 mm diameter spherical steel projectile. The four model targets designed to highlight different penetration mechanisms in Dyneema ® UHWMPE composites were: (i) a bare aluminum plate; (ii) the same plate fully encased in a 5.9 mm thick casing of Dyneema ® ; (iii) the fully encased plate with a portion of the Dyneema ® removed from the front face so that the projectile impacts directly the Al plate; and (iv) the fully encased plate with a portion of the Dyneema ® removed from the rear face so that the projectile can exit the Al plate without again interacting with the Dyneema ® . A combination of synchronized high speed photography with three cameras, together with post-test examination of the targets via X-ray tomography and optical microscopy was used to elucidate the deformation and perforation mechanisms. The measurements show that the ballistic resistance of these targets increases in the order: bare Al plate, rear face cutout target, fully encased target and front face cutout target. These findings are explained based on the following key findings: (a) the ballistic performance of Dyneema ® plates supported on a foundation is inferior to Dyneema ® plates supported along their edges; (b) the apparent ballistic resistance of Dyneema ® plates increases if the plates are given an initial velocity prior to the impact by the projectile, thereby reducing the relative velocity between the Dyneema ® plate and projectile; and (c) when the projectile is fragmented prior to impact, the spatially and temporally distributed loading enhances the ballistic resistance of the Dyneema ® . Composite laminates made of glass/epoxy with and without nano fillers were subjected to projectile impact. The laminates of different thicknesses were prepared by hand lay-up and compression molding processes. Laminates were made from glass woven roving mats of 610 gsm, epoxy resin and nano clay of 1–5 wt.% of matrix. A piston type gas gun setup was used to impact a spherical nose projectile of diameter 9.5 mm and mass of 7.6 g, on the nanocomposite laminates at impact velocities in the range of their ballistic limit and above. The energy absorbed during penetration and ballistic limit of the nanocomposite laminates were studied both experimentally and analytically. The analytical model also predicts the energy absorbed in various failure modes due to tensile failure of primary fibers, deformation of secondary fibers, delamination and matrix crack. Mechanical properties like tensile modulus, stress–strain function, shear modulus, and strain energy release rate were used as input to the analytical model. Laminates of three, five and eight layers have been considered for the analysis. The effect of clay dispersion in the matrix for different failure modes is discussed. The ballistic performance of thin aluminium targets and influence thereon of different circumferential fixity conditions were studied both experimentally and by finite element simulations. A pressure gun was employed to carry out the experiments while the numerical simulations were performed on ABAQUS/Explicit finite element code using Johnson–Cook elasto-viscoplastic material model. 1 mm thick 1100-H12 aluminium plates of free span diameter 255 mm were normally impacted by 19 mm diameter ogive and blunt nosed projectiles. The boundary conditions of the plate were varied by varying the region of fixity along its circumference as 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% in experiments and the numerical simulations. Further, simulations were carried out to compare the response of the plates with 50% and 75% continuous fixity with those with two and three symmetrical intermittent regions of 25% fixity respectively. The variation in the boundary condition has been found to have insignificant influence on the failure mode of the target however; it significantly affected the mechanics of target deformation and its energy absorption capacity. The ballistic limit increased with decrease in the region of fixity. It decreased for intermittent fixity in comparison with equivalent continuous fixity. And, it has been found to be higher for the impact with projectile having blunt nose in comparison with the one having ogive nose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The burning of compacted modified propellant charges applied as a traveling charge in the hybrid shot scheme was studied. The block charges were manufactured by pressing fine propellant grains coated by a thin film of polyvinyl butyral. A stick from several pressed pellets was insulated over its lateral surface by a thin layer of silicon paste, glued to the back of the projectile and inserted into the barrel of the 23-mm smooth-bore laboratory gun. The loose-packed accelerator charge was placed in the breech. Combustion was initiated by an igniter plug placed between the traveling and breech charges. A set of piezoquartz gauges placed in the breech and along the barrel, as well as a frame-target device were used for recording characteristics of the firings. It is shown that blocks of this type, applied as the traveling charge, provide a stable burning process resulting in high ballistic performance. The block traveling charge preserves its integrity in the course of its motion along the barrel, and burning envelopes its total mass when pressure in the breach passes the maximum value. The descending portion of the pressure diagram demonstrates appreciable transformation, with convex or secondary hump sections. The shape of spatial pressure profiles behind the moving projectile is also transformed, and the pressure at the projectile butt end may be higher than the pressure in the breech. Compared to the conventional charges at the same maximum pressures the muzzle velocity increment attains 340 ms-1 (or 23%) for a light 35-g projectile and 200 ms-1 (or 19%) for a heavy 104-g projectile. This study aims to investigate the penetration of a projectile into a surrogate human tissue numerically, using Finite Element (FE) simulation. 20% Balistic Gelatin material (BG) is simulated with an elasto-plastic hydrodynamic constitutive law, and then impacted by steel spheres at different velocities. The results from the FE simulations are compared with existing experimental data and other analytical equations from the literature. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate a projectile penetration by numerical simulation, and then compare the results with analytical and experimental data from previous studies. • High hardness steel (HHS) sheet with UHMWPE composite backing were tested against a hardened steel core projectile. • The projectile core was eroded by the HHS sheet and stopped in UHMWPE composite. • It is observed that only a core eroded to a certain length and weight by armor system can be defeated. • In numerical modeling core failure strain was determined from the residual weight of cores. • The numerical model can be used to evolve armor design. Thin high hardness steel sheets can be an alternative to expensive ceramic armor systems designed to defeat hardened core projectiles. A thin high hardness steel sheet backed with UHMWPE fiber-reinforced composite was ballistically tested against a 7.62 × 39 mm hardened steel core projectile in a single-stage gas gun. Thin steel sheets of 530 BHN hardness were adhesively bonded with UHMWPE fiber-reinforced composite to fabricate armor plates. Armor plates were able to defeat the projectile showing considerable potential. Tensile strength of steel sheet and UHMWPE-fiber reinforced ply was also determined. A detailed numerical simulation of the impact event was also performed to understand the phenomenon of defeat and penetration in greater detail. This paper describes a cost effective automated methodology to analyze launch video of artillery projectiles. Image processing and computer vision techniques are used to segment and classify the projectile shape in each video frame. Within minutes of being fired, the initial position, velocity, and orientation history of the projectile in three-dimensional space is determined at the gun site. An overview of several standard methods used by the Army to characterize pitching and yawing motion of projectiles is included, as well as a discussion of the limitations of these methods. Sandwiched hollow sphere structure may have the potential to provide better ballistic impact protection as compared with monolithic plate based on the same weight and impact area. In the previous study of a sandwiched hollow sphere structure by the authors, a novel unit cell was created as a basic building unit of the structure, the tumbling effect was observed for significant impact energy absorption, and the existence of an optimal yield stress or hardness was proved for maximizing the impact energy absorption. However, the impact energy absorption ability of the sandwiched hollow sphere structure may also relate to many other factors. In this study, the diameter relation between the incoming projectile and the spheres in the sandwich core, the projectile initial impact velocity, and the sphere arrangement in the sandwich core are examined. It is revealed that the first layer sphere diameter should be comparable to the diameter of the incoming projectile, the diameter of spheres in different layers in one sandwich core should either decrease or increase monotonically, and there exists a critical impacting speed, at which the sandwiched sphere structure is most effective for impact energy absorption, etc. All these findings make the sandwiched hollow sphere structure a promising new member to the passive armor family. Abstract: The evaluation of ballistic resistance of steel targets is important due to its direct application to the safety of defense protective structures such as bunkers for military personnel, shelters for arms and explosives as well as safety of nuclear containment against missile impact. Experiments on penetration of 23mm hard projectiles into mild steel plates were performed for 500mm square plates with 30, 50, 60, and 150mm total thicknesses. Results for ballistic limits obtained from existing empirical and analytical relations are compared with those from experiments. In addition, numerical simulations to predict the experimental results were made. Erosion (cell removal) criteria were established in order to realize simulation. Effect of the erosion strain value for which cells are removed on the prediction of penetration into steel plates was investigated. Abstract: In this paper, the ballistic performance of double-layered steel plates of different materials impacted by blunt- and ogival-nosed projectiles is experimentally investigated by a gas gun. The ballistic limit velocity for each configuration is obtained and compared on the investigation of the effect of the order of layers and the nose shape of projectiles on the ballistic resistance of targets. The experimental results showed that the ballistic limit velocities are higher for the double-layered plates of the upper layer of high strength and low ductility material and the lower layer of low strength and high ductility material than the configuration of the opposite layering order. Moreover, the ballistic limit velocities of ogival-nosed projectiles are significantly smaller than those of blunt-nosed projectiles. Furthermore, the keep integrity ability of ogival-projectiles is obvious stronger than that of blunt-nosed projectiles, and also the blunt-nosed projectiles lose some mass and their length shorten, but the loss of mass and length of ogival-nosed projectiles are tiny that can be neglected. The differences in the ballistic limit velocities between various impact conditions can be related to the transitions of perforation mechanisms and failure models of plates and projectiles. Identifying the use of stone-tipped projectile weapons in prehistory is important for understanding hominin strategic behavior and cognitive capacities. Such identifications are based on ‘diagnostic impact fractures’ (DIFs), assumed to form as a result of collisions between the tips and organic materials in the prey body. However, demonstrating weapon use requires documenting an impact speed and/or kinetic energy beyond those likely to occur accidentally or as a by-product of other tasks. We present a new experiment aimed at investigating the influence of speed on impact fracture formation in controlled conditions. Using an air-gun, we fired 234 nearly identical spears tipped with copies of a Levallois point cast in soda-lime glass into a composite target made of polyurethane bone-like plates, ballistic gelatin, and leather. The impact speed ranged from ≈7 to ≈30 m/s and the impact angle (IA) varied in increments of 15°, from 90° to –45°. We show that realistic DIFs can be produced under these controlled conditions. The frequency of longitudinal tip macrofractures is directly proportional to the impact speed but inversely proportional to the IA. The relationship between the tip fracture type and the type of damage left on the target explains the contact conditions for the formation of different DIFs. No relationship between either initiation or termination type and speed could be established. Therefore, we conclude that ‘step-terminating bending fractures’ should not be considered diagnostic of weapon use without further supporting evidence. Further, although fracture length increases with speed when IA is held constant, a great deal of overlap exists between trials with different IAs. Given the expected high variance in IA in real hunting situations, large longitudinal macrofractures on the tips of archaeologically recovered lithics should not automatically be interpreted as resulting from the use of high-speed projectiles. UK Armed Forces wear items of clothing that incorporate fragment protective fabrics (Tier 1 Pelvic Protection) and other items of clothing are under development (e.g. Improved Under Body Armor Combat Shirt). The long-term robustness of such garments is of interest. In this paper four candidate fabrics (knitted silk, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene felt, para-aramid felt and a woven para-aramid) were investigated. The effect of laundering on 0.24 g chisel-nosed fragment simulating projectile ballistic protective performance was measured on packs containing the candidate fabrics that were representative of clothing layers. Changes in the physical properties (mass, thickness, dimensional change) of candidate fabrics were measured. The ballistic protective performance of two candidate fabrics was unaffected by laundering; for the other two fabrics improved performance was measured. The masses of the specimen packs was unaffected by laundering; however, the thickness of all fabrics increased, relative to dimensional change. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In order to analyze the lethality of a forward enhanced lethal HE (high explosive) projectile against personnel targets, the static explosion experiments are made on the forward enhanced lethal HE projectile and the conventional HE projectile, which have same structural characteristic parameters. A calculating model of the lethality against personnel targets is established. The lethal powers of two kinds of projectile against personnel targets in same terminal conditions are comparatively calculated. The result shows that the forward enhanced lethal HE projectile can produce a fragment damage area compared with the conventional HE projectile so that it makes the killing area for personnel targets being increased by 147.3%.
