Our aim is, through an analysis of the book XVII of Priscian’s Institutiones Grammaticae, to compare the concepts of use, variation and norm, used by our author, to terms of same nomenclature, but used nowadays in the Linguistics Studies. Our research was developed by means of reading of the original Latin text, having as a support a translation of the text into French. Consequently, we could notice that the use of such terms in the Ancient Times seemed not to have this normative nature they have today, declaring these Linguistic uses, classified before as errors, as language variation, certified in the authors of golden literature era as well. Nosso objetivo é, através de uma análise do livro XVII da obra Institutiones Grammaticae de Prisciano de Cesareia, comparar os conceitos de uso, variação e norma, utilizados pelo nosso autor, com termos de mesma nomenclatura, porém utilizados na atualidade dos estudos linguísticos. Nossa pesquisa se desenvolveu mediante a leitura do texto original latino, tendo como suporte uma tradução da obra para o francês. Assim, podemos observar que o emprego de tais termos na antiguidade parecia não possuir o caráter normativo que apresentam hoje, declarando estes usos linguísticos, antes classificados como erros, como variações da língua, atestadas também em autores da era de ouro da literatura latina.
