Introduction: To evaluate use and utility of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Hub Australia website. Methods: Online REDCap user survey incorporating the Website Evaluation Questionnaire, open ended questions, Google metrics data and an accessibility audit. Results: Seventy‐six participants: researchers (32%), health professionals (29%) and policymakers/advocates (16%) completed the survey. Most were from Australia (95%) and were likely or very likely to recommend the FASD Hub to colleagues (92%), friends (74%) and patients (72%). The mean Website Evaluation Questionnaire score was at least 3.45/5 for all dimensions (ease of use, hyperlinks, structure, relevance, comprehension, completeness, layout, search option); range 3.45 (search option) to 4.04 (relevance). Participants found the content trustworthy (92%) but wanted more information for, and to support, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and improved search capacity. Google metrics identified 25,534 unique users over 6 months (82% new users); 83% aged 18–44 years, 72% female and 35% international. Background: The United States has unacceptably high rates of maternal and infant mortality, especially among Black women and their infants. Prenatal and postpartum care help reduce maternal and infant morbidity and mortality; however, Black women are less likely to access and utilize peripartum care largely due to structural racism. Identifying factors that buffer against the systemic barriers disproportionately impacting this community is an important step in addressing racial health disparities. Using existing data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) targeting maternal and infant health disparities, this study aims to (1) explore predictors of peripartum care attendance and (2) examine clinical trial sample representativeness. Methods: The analyses addressing the primary aim of the study included Black women at risk for low prenatal care (PNC) engagement who consented to RCT participation and had a documented live birth (n = 123). For the secondary study aim, comparisons between women who consented to the RCT (Consenters; n = 149) and those who did not (Non-consenters; n = 122) were made using chi-square and t-tests. Results: Hierarchical linear and logistic regression identified predictors of prenatal and postpartum care attendance, respectively. After controlling for multiple comparisons, no significant differences were identified between characteristics of Consenters and Non-consenters. Older age (p = 0.038), high-risk pregnancy (p < 0.001), and no past week substance use (p = 0.033) predicted better PNC attendance. PNC attendance predicted postpartum visit attendance (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study provides benchmark data on predictors of peripartum care and sample representativeness in RCTs. Background: Experiencing mental health difficulties during pregnancy predicts a variety of quality-of-life (QoL) outcomes for Black women. However, one area of prenatal mental health remains underresearched: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Given the impairments reported by adults with significant symptoms of ADHD and the linkages between depression and ADHD in nonpregnant samples, the current study aimed to examine the relationships among ADHD symptoms, depression, and QoL in Black pregnant women. Materials and Methods: Participants for this study were 116 pregnant Black women aged 18–43 years (mean age = 27.14, standard deviation = 5.67) presenting to an urban women's health clinic. We investigated associations among maternal ADHD symptoms, risk of maternal depression, and different aspects of QoL, including relationships, life outlook, and life productivity. Results: Linear hierarchical regressions were performed to investigate the ability of maternal depression risk to mediate the relationship between maternal ADHD symptoms and QoL. Moderate to large negative correlations were found between maternal ADHD symptoms, depression risk, and quality of life (p's ≤ 0.001). Furthermore, maternal depression risk either partially or fully explained the relationship between ADHD symptoms and the different QoL variables. Conclusions: This study illustrates that symptoms of both ADHD and depression are important clinical considerations for Black women during pregnancy. As significant ADHD symptoms can lead to the development of depression, future research should investigate the temporal relationship between depression and QoL in pregnant women diagnosed with ADHD, as well as study whether ADHD treatment results in improvements in depressive symptoms. Abstract: Objective: To date, most investigations of mental health in pregnant women have focused on depression or substance use. This study aimed to (a) delineate the relationships between symptoms of attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and prenatal health behaviors and (b) explore whether the symptom clusters of ADHD differentially predict prenatal health behaviors (e.g., physical strain, healthy eating, prenatal vitamin use). Method: A total of 198 pregnant women (mean age = 27.94 years) completed measures of ADHD symptoms, prenatal health behaviors, and depression. Results: Inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity/emotional lability all evidenced significant relationships with the prenatal health behaviors, each differentially predicting different prenatal health behaviors. Conclusion: As decreased engagement in adequate prenatal health behaviors puts both the mother and fetus at risk for negative birth outcomes, future research should work to develop a brief ADHD screen to be used in obstetric clinics and should investigate these relationships within a sample of women with a diagnosis of ADHD. Background: Prenatal alcohol exposure is an important modifiable cause of adverse fetal outcomes during and following pregnancy. Midwives are key providers of antenatal care, and it is important to understand the factors which influence their ability to provide appropriate advice and support to women about alcohol use in pregnancy. The main aim of this study was to develop a psychometrically valid scale to evaluate midwives' beliefs about assessing alcohol use during pregnancy.Method: A self-administered questionnaire was developed to evaluate midwives' beliefs about assessing alcohol use during pregnancy, including beliefs about positive and negative consequences of asking about alcohol use, and beliefs about capacity to assess alcohol use. The questionnaire was sent to 245 midwives working for a state-wide country health service in Western Australia. Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify the latent constructs assessed by the 36 belief items and provide initial construct validation of the Asking About Alcohol (AAA) Scale.Results: Of the 166 (67.8 %) midwives who responded to the survey, 160 (96.4 %) completed one or more of the belief items and were included in this analysis. Factor analysis identified six subscales which assessed beliefs about discomfort, capacity, effectiveness, role, trust and knowledge. Midwives held the most positive beliefs about their capacity to ask and the effectiveness of asking about alcohol use, and the least positive beliefs about women's knowledge about alcohol use and discomfort associated with asking about alcohol use in pregnancy. Midwives' beliefs about their role and the effectiveness of asking were most strongly associated with the intention to ask all pregnant women about alcohol use during pregnancy (r = -0.59, p < 0.001 and r = -0.52, p < 0.001).Conclusions: Our analysis has identified key constructs underlying midwives' beliefs about the assessment of alcohol use during pregnancy. The AAA Scale provides a basis for improved clarity and consistency in the conceptualisation and measurement of midwives' beliefs which can be used to enhance our understanding of factors influencing midwives' ability to deliver interventions to prevent alcohol use during pregnancy. Background: Midwives are an influential profession and a key group in informing women about alcohol consumption in pregnancy and its consequences. There are no current quantitative Australian data on midwives' knowledge, attitudes and practice in relation to alcohol consumption during pregnancy and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. We aimed to reduce this knowledge gap by understanding midwives' perceptions of their practice in addressing alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at 19 maternity sites across the seven health regions of country Western Australia. A questionnaire was designed following review of the literature and other relevant surveys. Midwifery managers of the maternity sites distributed questionnaires to all midwives working in their line of management. A total of 334 midwives were invited to participate in the research and (n = 245, 73.4%) of these were eligible. Results: The response fraction was (n = 166, 67.8%). Nearly all (n = 151, 93.2%) midwives asked pregnant women about their alcohol consumption during pregnancy and (n = 164, 99.4%) offered advice about alcohol consumption in accordance with the Australian Alcohol Guideline, which states "For women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, not drinking is the safest option". Nearly two thirds (n = 104, 64.2%) of the midwives informed pregnant women about the effects of alcohol consumption in pregnancy, they did not always use the recommended AUDIT screening tool (n = 66, 47.5%) to assess alcohol consumption during pregnancy, nor conduct brief intervention when indicated (n = 107, 70.4%). Most midwives endorsed professional development about screening tools (n = 145, 93.5%), brief intervention (n = 144, 92.9%), and alcohol consumption during pregnancy and FASD (n = 144, 92.9%). Conclusion: Nearly all midwives in this study asked and advised about alcohol consumption in pregnancy and around two thirds provided information about the effects of alcohol in pregnancy. Our findings support the need for further professional development for midwives on screening and brief intervention. Background: Screening facilitates the early identification of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and prevalence estimation of FASD for timely prevention, diagnostic, and management planning. However, little is known about FASD screening tools.Aims: The aims of this systematic review are to identify FASD screening tools and examine their performance characteristics.Methods: Four electronic databases were searched for eligible studies that examined individuals with FASD or prenatal alcohol exposure and reported the sensitivity and specificity of FASD screening tools. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Studies-2 tool.Results: Sixteen studies were identified, comprising five fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and seven FASD screening tools. They varied in screening approach and performance characteristics and were linked to four different diagnostic criteria. FAS screening tools performed well in the identification of individuals at risk of FAS while the performance of FASD screening tools varied in the identification of individuals at risk of FASD.Conclusion and Implications: Results highlight the vast differences in the screening approaches performance characteristics, and diagnostic criteria linked to FASD screening tools. More research is needed to identify biomarkers unique to FASD to guide the development of accurate FASD screening tools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
