Rain gauge networks provide direct precipitation measurements and have been widely used in hydrology, synoptic-scale meteorology, and climatology. However, rain gauge observations are subject to a variety of error sources, and quality control (QC) is required to ensure the reasonable use. In order to enhance the automatic detection ability of anomalies in data, the novel multi-source data quality control (NMQC) method is proposed for hourly rain gauge data. It employs a phased strategy to reduce the misjudgment risk caused by the uncertainty from radar and satellite remote-sensing measurements. NMQC is applied for the QC of hourly gauge data from more than 24,000 hydro-meteorological stations in the Yangtze River basin in 2020. The results show that its detection ratio of anomalous data is 1.73‰, only 1.73% of which are suspicious data needing to be confirmed by experts. Moreover, the distribution characteristics of anomaly data are consistent with the climatic characteristics of the study region as well as measurement and maintenance modes of rain gauges. Overall, NMQC has a strong ability to label anomaly data automatically, while identifying a lower proportion of suspicious data. It can greatly reduce manual intervention and shorten the impact time of anomaly data in the operational work. The IMERG data product is an optimal combination of precipitation estimates from the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM), making use of a variety of data types, primarily data from various spaceborne passive instruments. Previous versions of the IMERG product have been extensively validated by comparisons with gauge data and ground-based radars over land. However, IMERG rain rates, especially sub-daily, over open ocean are less validated due to the scarcity of comparison data, particularly with the relatively new Version 07. To address this issue, we consider IMERG V07 30-min data acquired in tropical cyclones over open ocean. We perform two tasks. The first is a straightforward comparison between IMERG precipitation rates and those retrieved from the GPM Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). From this, we find that IMERG and DPR are close at low rain rates, while, at high rain rates, IMERG tends to be lower than DPR. The second task is the assessment of IMERG's ability to represent or detect structures commonly seen in tropical cyclones, including the annular structure and concentric eyewalls. For this, we operate on IMERG data with many machine learning algorithms and are able to achieve a 96% classification accuracy, indicating that IMERG does indeed contain TC structural information. Observations of clouds and precipitation in the microwave domain from the active dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) and the passive Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) onboard the GPM Core Observatory satellite are used in synergy with cloud tracking information derived from infrared imagery from the GOES-13 and Meteosat-7 geostationary satellites for analysis of the life cycle of precipitating cloud systems, in terms of temporal evolution of their macrophysical characteristics, in several oceanic and continental regions of the tropics. The life cycle of each one of the several hundred thousand cloud systems tracked during the 2-yr (2015–16) analysis period is divided into five equal-duration stages between initiation and dissipation. The average cloud size, precipitation intensity, precipitation top height, and convective and stratiform precipitating fractions are documented at each stage of the life cycle for different cloud categories (based upon lifetime duration). The average life cycle dynamics is found remarkably homogeneous across the different regions and is consistent with previous studies: systems peak in size around midlife; precipitation intensity and convective fraction tend to decrease continuously from the initiation stage to the dissipation. Over the three continental regions, Amazonia (AMZ), central Africa (CAF), and Sahel (SAH), at the early stages of clouds' life cycle, precipitation estimates from the passive GMI instrument are systematically found to be 15%–40% lower than active radar estimates. By highlighting stage-dependent biases in state-of-the-art passive microwave precipitation estimates over land, we demonstrate the potential usefulness of cloud tracking information for improving retrievals and suggest new directions for the synergistic use of geostationary and low-Earth-orbiting satellite observations. Precipitation plays an important role in cloud and aerosol processes over the Southern Ocean (SO). The main objective of this study is to characterize SO precipitation properties associated with SO stratocumulus clouds. We use data from the Southern Ocean Clouds Radiation Aerosol Transport Experimental Study (SOCRATES), and leverage observations from airborne radar, lidar, and in situ probes. We find that for the cold‐topped clouds (cloud‐top‐temperature <0°C), the phase of precipitation with reflectivity >0 dBZ is predominantly ice, while reflectivity < −10 dBZ is predominantly liquid. Liquid‐phase precipitation properties are retrieved where radar and lidar are zenith‐pointing. Power‐law relationships between reflectivity (Z) and rain rate (R) are developed, and the derived Z–R relationships show vertical dependence and sensitivity to the presence of droplets with diameters between 10 and 40 μm. Using derived Z–R relationships, a reflectivity‐velocity (ZV) retrieval method, and a radar‐lidar retrieval method, we derive rain rate and other precipitation properties. The retrieved rain rate from all three methods shows good agreement with in‐situ aircraft estimates, with rain rates typically being quite light (<0.1 mm hr−1). We examine the vertical distribution of precipitation properties, and find that rain rate, precipitation number concentration, and precipitation liquid water all decrease as one gets closer to the surface, while precipitation size and distribution width increases. We also examine how cloud base rain rate (RCB) depends on cloud depth (H) and aerosol concentration (Na) for particles with a diameter greater than 70 nm, and find that RCB is proportional to H3.1Na−0.8 ${H}^{3.1}\,{N}_{a}^{-0.8}$. This study aims to characterize SO precipitation properties using aircraft data that can count the number and size of cloud and precipitation droplets, as well as lidar and radar that measure light and microwaves respectively reflected by droplets. Using information from lidar, we can distinguish the precipitation phase, and we find that ice precipitation is more frequent when the amount of reflected energy measured by the radar (radar reflectivity) is larger than a certain threshold. We derived relationships between rain rate and radar reflectivity. We also find the precipitation properties inferred from radar and lidar data compare well with direct measurements from the aircraft, and the precipitation tends to be very light. We study how precipitation properties vary vertically, and find that as one gets closer to the surface, there is a decrease in precipitation droplet number and water, while there is an increase in the average size of droplets. We also find that rain rate depends on how thick the clouds are and the number of aerosols, consistent with theoretical expectations. Large satellite discrepancies and model biases in representing precipitation over the Southern Ocean (SO) are related directly to the region's limited surface observations of precipitation. To help address this knowledge gap, the study investigated the precipitation characteristics and rain rate retrievals over the remote SO using ship‐borne data of the Ocean Rainfall And Ice‐phase precipitation measurement Network disdrometer (OceanRAIN) and dual‐polarimetric C‐band radar (OceanPOL) aboard the Research Vessel (RV) Investigator in the Austral warm seasons of 2016–2018. Seven distinct synoptic types over the SO were analyzed based on their radar polarimetric signatures, surface precipitation phase, and rain microphysical properties. OceanRAIN observations revealed that the SO precipitation was dominated by drizzle and light rain, with small‐sized raindrops (diameter <1 mm) constituting up to 47% of total accumulation. Precipitation occurred most frequently over the warm sector of extratropical cyclones, while concentrations of large‐sized raindrops (diameter >3 mm) were prominent over synoptic types with colder and more convectively unstable environments. OceanPOL observations complement and extend the surface precipitation properties sampled by OceanRAIN, providing unique information to help characterize the variety of potential precipitation types and associated mechanisms under different synoptic conditions. Raindrop size distributions (DSD) measured with OceanRAIN over the SO were better characterized by analytical DSD forms with two‐shape parameters than single‐shape parameters currently implemented in satellite retrieval algorithms. This study also revised a rainfall retrieval algorithm for C‐band radars to reflect the large amount of small drops and provide improved radar rainfall estimates over the SO. However, large differences continue to exist among current precipitation products in the region, owing in part to the absence of high‐quality surface observational records suitable for evaluation across a range of temporal and spatial scales. This work uses two instruments aboard the RV Investigator over the Australian sector of the SO in the Austral warm seasons of 2016–2018: the OceanRAIN disdrometer and OceanPOL radar. We found variability in radar features and surface precipitation properties among seven distinct synoptic conditions over the SO. This work also discussed two important findings related to remote sensing retrievals of SO rain. First, we demonstrated why the rainfall retrieval assumptions in satellite algorithms may need to be refined to account for the unique rainfall properties in the SO. Second, we formulated a new set of equations suitable for shipborne C‐band radars in improving rain rate estimates over the region. This work leads toward more accurate, high‐resolution estimates of precipitation over the measurement‐sparse SO to better understand a range of climatological and meteorological processes in the region. NASA's multisatellite precipitation product from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) product, is validated over tropical and high-latitude oceans from June 2014 to August 2021. This oceanic study uses the GPM Validation Network's island-based radars to assess IMERG when the GPM Core Observatory's Microwave Imager (GMI) observes precipitation at these sites (i.e., IMERG-GMI). Error tracing from the Level 3 (gridded) IMERG V06B product back through to the input Level 2 (satellite footprint) Goddard Profiling Algorithm GMI V05 climate (GPROF-CLIM) product quantifies the errors separately associated with each step in the gridding and calibration of the estimates from GPROF-CLIM to IMERG-GMI. Mean relative bias results indicate that IMERG-GMI V06B overestimates Alaskan high-latitude oceanic precipitation by +147% and tropical oceanic precipitation by +12% with respect to surface radars. GPROF-CLIM V05 overestimates Alaskan oceanic precipitation by +15%, showing that the IMERG algorithm's calibration adjustments to the input GPROF-CLIM precipitation estimates increase the mean relative bias in this region. In contrast, IMERG adjustments are minimal over tropical waters with GPROF-CLIM overestimating oceanic precipitation by +14%. This study discovered that the IMERG V06B gridding process incorrectly geolocated GPROF-CLIM V05 precipitation estimates by 0.1° eastward in the latitude band 75°N–75°S, which has been rectified in the IMERG V07 algorithm. Correcting for the geolocation error in IMERG-GMI V06B improved oceanic statistics, with improvements greater in tropical waters than Alaskan waters. This error tracing approach enables a high-precision diagnosis of how different IMERG algorithm steps contribute to and mitigate errors, demonstrating the importance of collaboration between evaluation studies and algorithm developers. Significance Statement: Evaluation of IMERG's oceanic performance is very limited to date. This study uses the GPM Validation Network to conduct the first extensive assessment of IMERG V06B at its native resolution over both high-latitude and tropical oceans, and traces errors in IMERG-GMI back through to the input GPROF-CLIM GMI product. IMERG-GMI overestimates tropical oceanic precipitation (+12%) and strongly overestimates Alaskan oceanic precipitation (+147%) with respect to the island-based radars studied. IMERG's GMI estimates are assessed as these should be the optimal estimates within the multisatellite product due to the GMI's status as calibrator of the GPM passive microwave constellation. Characteristics of clouds which produced heavy precipitation in St. Petersburg and Leningrad oblast on June 18, 2020, are considered based on measurements with a C-band Doppler radar, Pluvio2 200 precipitation gauges, and a Blitzortung lightning detection system. To assess the intensity of precipitation, different values of the coefficients in the Marshall–Palmer Z–R relation are studied. We show that it is reasonable to use the specific differential phase to calculate the precipitation intensity when it exceeds 30 mm/h and precipitation consists of raindrops and hail. The top of the clouds exceeded 12 km, the maximal reflectivity was higher than 52 dBZ, and the maximal precipitation intensity could exceed 160 mm/h. A significant volume of a cloud was occupied by hail particles, which were recorded from the Earth's surface up to an altitude of 10 km. The highest reflectance was recorded in the precipitation zone, as well as in the hydrometeors melting area. All the clouds under study were thunderstorms. A sufficiently high correlation between the frequency of lightning and the intensity of precipitation is noted: the Spearman's correlation coefficient exceeds 0.7. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent development of satellite products for observing precipitation based on different technologies (microwaves, infrared, etc.) allows for near-real-time meteorological studies. The purpose of this article is to evaluate 11 satellite products (GHE, PDIR, IMERG-Early v6, IMERG-Late v6, CMORPH v0.x, CMORPH-RT v0.x, GSMaP-NRT v7, GSMaP-NRT-GC v7, GSMaP-NOW v7, GSMaP-NOW-GC v7, and DATABOURG) currently available and compare them to 2 ground-based radar networks (PANTHERE and OPERA) and the French rain-gauge network RADOME. Two case studies of intense precipitation over France (22 to 25 April 2022 and 24 to 29 June 2022) were selected. The radar estimations are closer to the RADOME observations than the satellite-based estimations, which tend to globally underestimate the precipitation amounts over the areas of interest while OPERA tends to strongly overestimate precipitation amounts during the June case study. The PANTHERE radar product and the carrier-to-noise product DATABOURG shows promising results. Near-real-time satellite products tend to have closer precipitation amounts to the reference dataset than satellite products with a shorter latency. The three-dimensional (3D) structure of precipitation systems is highly dependent on hydrometeor formation processes and microphysics. This study aims to characterize distinct vertical profiles of precipitation regimes by relying on the availability of a high-quality, spatially dense radar network and its capability to observe the 3D structure of the storms. A deep-learning-based framework, coupled with unsupervised clustering methods, is developed to identify types of precipitation structures irrespective of their physical properties. A 6-month period of 3D reflectivity profiles from the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) network is used to identify different regimes and investigate their properties with respect to the underlying environmental conditions. Dominant features retrieved from radar reflectivity profiles using convolutional neural-network-based autoencoders are employed to identify similar-looking vertical structures using coupled k-means and agglomerative clustering algorithms. The k-means method identifies distinct groups, while the agglomerative clustering visualizes intercluster relationships. The framework identifies 18 clusters that can be broadly combined into five groups of varied echo-top heights. The 18 clusters demonstrate variability with respect to structural features and precipitation rate/type, implying that profiles in each group belong to a physically different precipitation regime. An independent analysis of the regime properties is conducted by matching the MRMS reflectivity profiles with environmental parameters derived from the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model forecasts. The distribution of the environmental variables confirms cluster-specific feature properties, confirming the physics-based regime separation across the clusters and their dependence on the vertical structure. The identified precipitation regimes can assist in developing physics-guided retrievals and studying precipitation regimes. Significance Statement: This study proposes a systematic model to identify precipitation profiles of distinct vertical structures and evaluate their dependence on environmental conditions. The model was developed using ground-based radar observations; however, there is potential to extend this model to reflectivity profiles from both ground- and satellite-based sensors. In addition, the identified precipitation regime clusters could be a proxy for the vertical structure of precipitation systems and assist in determining the structural variability within traditional precipitation type classification (e.g., convective versus stratiform). Moreover, identifying the precipitation regimes could also be used to improve satellite-based precipitation retrievals. Estimating precipitation is of critical importance to climate systems and decision-making processes. This paper presents Espresso, a deep learning model designed for estimating precipitation from satellite observations on a global scale. Conventional methods, like ground-based radars, are limited in terms of spatial coverage. Satellite observations, on the other hand, allow global coverage. Combined with deep learning methods, these observations offer the opportunity to address the challenge of estimating precipitation on a global scale. This research paper presents the development of a deep learning model using geostationary satellite data as input and generating instantaneous rainfall rates, calibrated using data from the Global Precipitation Measurement Core Observatory (GPMCO). The performance impact of various input data configurations on Espresso was investigated. These configurations include a sequence of four images from geostationary satellites and the optimal selection of channels. Additional descriptive features were explored to enhance the model's robustness for global applications. When evaluated against the GPMCO test set, Espresso demonstrated highly accurate precipitation estimation, especially within equatorial regions. A comparison against six other operational products using multiple metrics indicated its competitive performance. The model's superior storm localization and intensity estimation were further confirmed through visual comparisons in case studies. The measurement of global precipitation is important for quantifying and understanding the Earth's systems. While gauges form the basis of conventional measurements, global measurements are only truly possible using satellite observations. Over the last 50–60 years, satellite systems have evolved to provide a comprehensive suite of observing systems, including many sensors that are capable of precipitation retrievals. While much progress has been made in developing and implementing precipitation retrieval schemes, many techniques have concentrated upon retrievals over regions with well-defined precipitation systems, such as the tropics. At higher latitudes, such retrieval schemes are less successful in providing accurate and consistent precipitation estimates, especially due to the large diversity of precipitation regimes. Furthermore, the increasing dominance of snowfall at higher latitudes imposes a number of challenges that require further, urgent work. This paper reviews the state of the current observations and retrieval schemes, highlighting the key factors that need to be addressed to improve the estimation and measurement of precipitation at mid-to-high latitudes. This paper explores whether particles within uniformly spaced generating cells falling at terminal velocity within observed 2D wind fields and idealized deformation flow beneath cloud top can be reorganized consistent with the presence of single and multibanded structures present on WSR-88D radars. In the first experiment, two-dimensional wind fields, calculated along cross sections normal to the long axis of snowbands observed during three northeast U.S. winter storms, were taken from the initialization of the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model. This experiment demonstrated that the greater the residence time of the particles in each of the three storms, the greater particle reorganization occurred. For experiments with longer residence times, increases in particle concentrations were nearly or directly collocated with reflectivity bands. For experiments with shorter residence times, particle reorganization still conformed to the band features but with less concentration enhancement. This experiment demonstrates that the combination of long particle residence time and net convergent cross-sectional flow through the cloud depth is sufficient to reorganize particles into locations consistent with precipitation bands. Increased concentrations of ice particles can then contribute, along with any dynamic forcing, to the low-level reflectivity bands seen on WSR-88D radars. In a second experiment, the impact of flow deformation on the reorganization of falling ice particles was investigated using an idealized kinematic model with stretching deformation flow of different depths and magnitudes. These experiments showed that deformation flow provides for little particle reorganization given typical deformation layer depths and magnitudes within the comma head of such storms. Significance Statement: Past research with vertically pointing and scanning radars presents two different perspectives regarding snowfall organization in winter storms. Vertically pointing radars often observe cloud-top generating cells with precipitation fallstreaks descending into a broad stratiform echo at lower altitudes. In contrast, scanning radars often observe snowfall organized in quasi-linear bands. This work attempts to provide a connection between these two perspectives by examining how two-dimensional convergent and deformation flow occurring in winter storms can contribute to the reorganization of snowfall between cloud top and the ground. This paper outlines the construction of a new Multiplatform Precipitation Feature (MPF) framework designed to facilitate storm‐based analyses of data sets from multiple independent observing platforms for convective studies. The MPF approach is applied to ground‐ and space‐based precipitation observations and retrievals from the Global Precipitation Measurement mission Validation Network with space‐based lightning measurements from the Lightning Imaging Sensor on board the International Space Station to create a prototype MPF database. The data are synthesized in a thunderstorm‐like, feature‐based framework that enables broad statistical analyses of the storm‐based relationships between the microphysics, kinematics, and electrical properties of convection that can contribute insight into their morphological, regional, and seasonal variations. This manuscript details how MPFs are defined from precipitation data and how observations from multiple additional platforms are combined within the context of an MPF thunderstorm boundary and used to characterize the feature. A demonstration of the prototype database as a proof‐of‐concept showcases its flexibility to conduct both large‐scale storm‐based statistical studies as well as MPF‐facilitated thunderstorm case studies. The Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR), which consists of a Ku-band precipitation radar (KuPR) and a Ka-band precipitation radar (KaPR) on board the GPM Core Observatory, cannot observe precipitation at low altitudes near the ground contaminated by surface clutter. This near-surface region is called the blind zone. DPR estimates the clutter-free bottom (CFB), which is the lowest altitude not included in the blind zone, and estimates precipitation at altitudes higher than the CFB. High CFBs, which are common over mountainous areas, represent obstacles to detection of shallow precipitation and estimation of low-level enhanced precipitation. We compared KuPR data with rain gauge data from Da-Tun Mountain of northern Taiwan acquired from March 2014 to February 2020. A total of 12 cases were identified in which the KuPR missed some rainfall with intensity of .10 mm h21 that was observed by rain gauges. Comparison of KuPR profile and ground-based radar profile revealed that shallow precipitation in the KuPR blind zone was missed because the CFB was estimated to be higher than the lower bound of the range free from surface echoes. In the original operational algorithm, CFB was estimated using only the received power data of the KuPR. In this study, the CFB was identified by the sharp increase in the difference between the received powers of the KuPR and the KaPR at altitude affected by surface clutter. By lowering the CFB, the KuPR succeeded in detection and estimation of shallow precipitation. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: The Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the GPMCore Observatory cannot capture precipitation in the low-altitude region near the ground contaminated by surface clutter. This region is called the blind zone. The DPR estimates the clutter-free bottom (CFB), which is the lower bound of the range free from surface echoes, and uses data higher than CFB. DPR consists of a Ku-band precipitation radar (KuPR) and a Ka-band precipitation radar (KaPR). KuPR missed some shallow precipitation more than 10 mm h21 in the blind zone over Da-Tun Mountain of northern Taiwan because of misjudged CFB estimation. Using both the KuPR and the KaPR, we improved the CFB estimation algorithm, which lowered the CFB, narrowed the blind zone, and improved the capability to detect shallow precipitation. Abstract This paper outlines the construction of a new Multiplatform Precipitation Feature (MPF) framework designed to facilitate storm‐based analyses of data sets from multiple independent observing platforms for convective studies. The MPF approach is applied to ground‐ and space‐based precipitation observations and retrievals from the Global Precipitation Measurement mission Validation Network with space‐based lightning measurements from the Lightning Imaging Sensor on board the International Space Station to create a prototype MPF database. The data are synthesized in a thunderstorm‐like, feature‐based framework that enables broad statistical analyses of the storm‐based relationships between the microphysics, kinematics, and electrical properties of convection that can contribute insight into their morphological, regional, and seasonal variations. This manuscript details how MPFs are defined from precipitation data and how observations from multiple additional platforms are combined within the context of an MPF thunderstorm boundary and used to characterize the feature. A demonstration of the prototype database as a proof‐of‐concept showcases its flexibility to conduct both large‐scale storm‐based statistical studies as well as MPF‐facilitated thunderstorm case studies.

We present empirical conductance relations that are derived from incoherent scatter radar observations and correlated with all sky imager observations to identify the morphology of the aurora. We use 75,461 events collected using the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR) with associated all sky imagers observations spanning the years 2012–2016. In addition to classifying these events based on auroral morphology, we estimated the Hall and Pedersen conductance and the differential number flux from which the energy flux and the average energy can be calculated. The differential number flux was estimated using the maximum entropy inversion method described in Semeter and Kamalabadi (2005, https://doi.org/10.1029/2004RS003042), but now incorporating the Fang et al. (2010, https://doi.org/10.1029/2010GL045406) ionization model. The main results of this investigation are the power law equations that describe the median, 90th, and 10th percentile Hall and Pedersen conductance as a function of energy flux and average energy. These power law fits are performed for different auroral morphology including all events, discrete, diffuse, and pulsating auroral events. The median Pedersen conductance is found to be in good agreement with past empirical conductance specifications by Robinson et al. (1987, https://doi.org/10.1029/JA092iA03p02565); however, the median Hall conductance from the PFISR observations is found to be larger than the empirical Hall conductance formulas by Robinson et al. (1987, https://doi.org/10.1029/JA092iA03p02565). Pulsating aurora is found to be the most frequently occurring auroral morphology. Furthermore, pulsating aurora has an important contribution to Hall conductance since it has higher average energies than discrete aurora. The results from this investigation are applicable to space weather models and may enable better agreement between model‐data comparisons. Reflectivity bias of ground‐based weather radar (GR) is a common error source that can lead to biases in quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). In this study, the Dual‐frequency Precipitation Radar onboard the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission Core Observatory (GPM‐DPR) is used to correct GR reflectivity bias. The reflectivity bias correction comprehensively considers variations in GR‐DPR reflectivity difference associated with radar frequency difference, data matching approach, precipitation type, GR orographic beam blockage, attenuation, and sample size. The criteria to perform a robust GR‐DPR comparison are presented. Disdrometer validation, based on eight typical rain events from April to August 2019, demonstrates that GPM‐DPR can effectively reduce GR reflectivity bias to ±1 dB. For the period from June to August 2021, the reflectivity correction method is applied to 17 operational GRs. The multiradar QPE shows a significant increase in correlation coefficient (from 0.62 to 0.71), and decreases in relative mean bias (from −0.28 to −0.19) and root mean square error (from 3.96 to 3.54 mm) compared to rain gauges. These results confirm that GPM‐DPR can effectively correct the reflectivity biases of a GR network and improve multiradar QPE accuracy and consistency. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have a long and successful history of weather radar research. The NOAA ground-based radars—WSR-88D network—provide nationwide precipitation observations and estimates with advanced polarimetric capability. As a counterpart, the NASA–JAXA spaceborne radar—the Global Precipitation Measurement Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (GPM DPR)—has global coverage and higher vertical resolution than ground-based radars. While significant advances from both NOAA's WSR-88D network and NASA–JAXA's spaceborne radar DPR have been made, no systematic comparisons between the WSR-88D network and the DPR have been done. This study for the first time generates nationwide comprehensive comparisons at 136 WSR-88D radar sites from 2014 to 2020. Systematic differences in reflectivity are found, with ground radar reflectivity on average 2.4 dB smaller than that of the DPR (DPR version 6). This research found the discrepancies between WSR-88D and DPR arise from different calibration standards, signal attenuation correction, and differences in the ground and spaceborne scattering volumes. The recently updated DPR version 7 product improves rain detection and attenuation corrections, effectively reducing the overall average WSR-88D and DPR reflectivity differences to 1.0 dB. The goal of this study is to examine the systematic differences of radar reflectivity between the NOAA WSR-88D network and the NASA–JAXA DPR and to draw attention to radar-application users in recognizing their differences. This study aimed to reveal the seasonal climatic variations in the microphysical properties of precipitation over the Asian monsoon region. We used the Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar satellite product aboard the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission Core Observatory for 8 years from 2014 to 2021 to statistically analyze the mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm) and frequency of heavy ice precipitation (graupel and hail). The results showed statistically significant seasonal changes. The microphysical characteristics of large Dm and frequent heavy ice precipitation were observed over the Indian subcontinent and Indochina Peninsula in the premonsoon season and over the western Himalayan region in the mature-monsoon season, which can be related to the intense and deeply developed precipitation systems. The relationship between precipitation rate and Dm was also examined. The results indicated that changes in Dm were not caused only by changes in precipitation rate but were probably induced by changes in precipitation characteristics. In terms of the relationship between the microphysical properties, heavy ice precipitation particles in the upper atmosphere above the melting layer were observed more frequently as Dm near the surface increased. We also studied lower-atmospheric instability by investigating the vertical gradients of the dry and moist static energies. The results indicated that instability properties were different; dry and wet instabilities were dominant in the premonsoon and monsoon seasons, respectively, consistent with the results of the precipitation characteristics. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study was to reveal seasonal variations in precipitation microphysical characteristics, such as precipitation particle size and the existence of graupel and hail in the upper atmosphere, by climatological analysis over the Asian monsoon region. In previous studies, microphysical characteristics have mainly been addressed using ground-based observations. However, more sampling is needed to expand our understanding of climatological perspectives; therefore, we used recently available satellite observations. The Arctic is marked by deep intrusions of warm, moist air, alternating with outbreaks of cold air down to lower latitudes. The typical vertical structure of clouds and precipitation during these two synoptic weather extremes is examined at a coastal site at 69°N in Norway. The Norwegian Sea is a corridor for warm‐air intrusions (WAIs) and frequently witnesses cold‐air outbreaks (CAOs). This study uses data from profiling radar, lidar, and microwave radiometer, radiosondes and other probes that were collected during the CAOs in the Marine Boundary Layer Experiment (COMBLE) between 1 December 2019 and 31 May 2020. Marine CAOs are defined in terms of thermal instability relative to the sea surface temperature, and WAIs in terms of equivalent potential temperature stratification between the surface and 850 hPa. Cloud structures in CAOs are convective, driven by strong surface heat fluxes over a long fetch of open water, with cloud tops rarely exceeding 6 km above sea level. The mostly open‐cellular convection produces intermittent moderately‐heavy precipitation at the observational site, notwithstanding the low precipitable water vapor (PWV). In contrast, WAIs are marked by high values of PWV and integrated vapor transport. WAI clouds are synoptically driven, stratiform, with cloud tops often exceeding 5 km, sometimes layered, and generally producing persistent precipitation that can be heavier than in CAOs. The National Weather Service has initiated an effort to upgrade the scan strategy of the operational Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) to improve its hydrometeorological applications. The lowest scan elevation angle has been changed from 0.5° to 0° (or even lower in the future) for some WSR-88D stations. Using the KMUX WSR-88D radar deployed in mountainous terrain in Northern California as an example, this letter quantifies the impacts of lowering the minimum scan elevation angle of WSR-88D radar on surface rainfall mapping, with an emphasis on shallow orographic precipitation. In order to estimate surface rainfall using radar observations, polarimetric radar rainfall relations are established using local disdrometer data, which are then implemented with the KMUX radar observations at 0° and 0.5° scan elevation angles to derive rainfall estimates. Comparative evaluation of the radar-based rainfall estimates using rainfall measurements from surface rain gauges has demonstrated the superior performance of the lower scan elevation angle. When the distance from the radar is long (i.e., when the radar beam is likely within or above the melting layer), the improvement gained by the 0° scan relative to the 0.5° scan is 16.1% and 19.5% in terms of the normalized standard error (NSE) and the Pearson correlation coefficient (CORR), respectively. This paper proposes a new quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) technique to provide accurate rainfall estimates in complex terrain, where conventional QPE has limitations. The operational radar QPE in Taiwan is mainly based on the simplified relationship between radar reflectivity Z and rain rate R [R(Z) relation] and only utilizes the single-point lowest available echo to estimate rain rates, leading to low accuracy in complex terrain. Here, we conduct QPE using deep learning that extracts features from 3D radar reflectivities to address the above issues. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) are used to analyze contoured frequency by altitude diagrams (CFADs) to generate the QPE. CNN models are trained on existing rain gauges in northern and eastern Taiwan with the 3-yr data during 2015–17 and validated and tested using 2018 data. The weights of heavy rains (≥10 mm h−1) are increased in the model loss calculation to handle the unbalanced rainfall data and improve accuracy. Results show that the CNN outperforms the R(Z) relation based on the 2018 rain gauge data. Furthermore, this research proposes methods to conduct 2D gridded QPE at every pixel by blending estimates from various trained CNN models. Verification based on independent rain gauges shows that the CNN QPE solves the underestimation of the R(Z) relation in mountainous areas. Case studies are presented to visualize the results, showing that the CNN QPE generates better small-scale rainfall features and more accurate precipitation information. This study uses observations from a ground‐based instrument suite to investigate the rain‐snow level (RSL) in stratiform rainfall from January 2014 to April 2020 in the Upper Great Lakes Region. The height above the surface where ice melts to rain, the rain‐snow level, influences microphysical assumptions in remote sensing precipitation retrievals and the ability of space‐based radar to discriminate surface precipitation phase because of ground clutter. The instrument suite is installed at the Marquette, MI (MQT) National Weather Service station adjacent to Lake Superior. Rain events and the RSLs are studied through a ground‐based vertically profiling radar (Micro Rain Radar), a custom NASA‐developed video disdrometer (Precipitation Imaging Package), and reanalysis products from ECMWF ERA5 and NASA MERRA‐2. Distinct macro and microphysical characteristics are observed in precipitation events with shallow RSLs (<1.8 km above ground level [AGL]) and intermediate RSLs (>1.8 km AGL). Intermediate RSLs correspond to rain events with relatively higher rain rates and a higher concentration of small drops in the drop size distributions (DSDs). Shallow RSL DSDs contain relatively higher concentrations of large drops with lower fall speeds suggesting that partially melted snowflakes may be reaching the surface. Reflectivity‐rain‐rate relationships are also impacted by microphysical differences associated with RSL regimes. Radar‐detected RSLs agree with reanalysis‐derived melt levels‐especially at wet‐bulb isotherms of 0.5°C and 1°C. Seasonal differences such as shallow RSLs in winter, fall, and spring have subsequent implications for satellite detectability. Isolated warm-rain cells are an important feature over the tropical oceans. Although warm rain is typically associated with relatively small raindrops, large raindrops (>4.5 mm in diameter) have been observed in some cases. Previous studies have examined warm rain cells with large drops on a case-study basis, but they have yet to be investigated in a broader, statistical sense. During the recent Propagation of Intraseasonal Oscillations (PISTON) field campaign, a C-band polarimetric radar routinely measured extreme values of differential reflectivity in small, isolated convection, indicating the presence of large drops. Using an objective feature identification and tracking algorithm, this study offers new insights to the structure and frequency of cells containing large drops. Cells with high differential reflectivity (>3.5 dB) were present in 24% of all radar scans. The cells were typically small (8-km2 mean area), short lived (usually <10 min), and shallow (3.7-km mean height). High differential reflectivity was more often found on the upwind side of the cells, suggesting a size sorting mechanism was operating establishing a low concentration of large drops on the upwind side. Differential reflectivity also tended to increase at lower altitudes, which is hypothesized to be due to continued drop growth and increasing temperature (increasing the dielectric constant of water). Rapid vertical cross-section radar scans, as well as transects made by a Learjet aircraft with onboard particle probes, are also used to analyze these cells, and support the conclusions drawn from statistical analysis. Site-specific estimates of precipitation can be used to assess crop productivity and identify areas vulnerable to crop damages caused by extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. Spatial interpolation of precipitation such as Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) has been used to estimate precipitation in an area of interest. However, the reliability of spatial interpolation is often affected by the availability of precipitation measurements from weather stations in a given region especially under complex terrain conditions. Here we propose an alternative approach for site-specific estimation of precipitation using both radar reflectivity data and topographic features. At first, radar reflectivity data are used as inputs to an artificial neural network (ANN) for estimation of precipitation. These radar precipitations at each grid cell are used to represent the observations at virtual weather stations for spatial interpolation using PRISM. Furthermore, the radar precipitations are compared with the observations at actual weather stations for their bias correction. This approach is referred to as PRISM and Radar Estimation for Precipitation (PREP). A case study was conducted in Jeollabuk-do, South Korea to compare the degree of agreement between PREP and PRISM. It was found that PREP had higher degree of agreement for the daily estimates of precipitation than PRISM in the given region with a complex terrain including coast and mountains. For example, the root mean square error (RMSE) of precipitation estimates for PREP was 22.1% less than that for PRISM in 2020. PREP also had greater value of the critical success index (CSI) than PRISM especially under heavy precipitation events, e.g.,>180 mm, and no rainfall conditions. The persistent Southern Ocean (SO) shortwave radiation biases in climate models and reanalyses have been associated with the poor representation of clouds, precipitation, aerosols, the atmospheric boundary layer, and their intrinsic interactions. Capitalizing on shipborne observations collected during the Clouds Aerosols Precipitation Radiation and atmospheric Composition Over the Southern Ocean 2016 and 2018 field campaigns, this research investigates and characterizes cloud and precipitation processes from synoptic to micro scales. Distinct cloud and precipitation regimes are found to correspond to the seven thermodynamic clusters established using a K‐means clustering technique, while less distinctions are evident using the cyclone and (cold) front compositing methods. Cloud radar and disdrometer data reveal that light precipitation is common over the SO with higher intensities associated with cyclonic and warm frontal regions. Multiple lines of evidence suggest the presence of diverse microphysical features in several cloud regimes, including the likely dominance of ice aggregation in deep precipitating clouds. Signatures of mixed phase, and in some cases, riming were detected in shallow convective clouds away from the frontal conditions. Two of the K‐means clusters with contrasting cloud and precipitation properties are observed over the high‐latitude SO and coastal Antarctica, suggesting distinct physical processes therein. Through a single case study, in‐situ and remote‐sensing data collected by an overflight of the Southern Ocean Clouds Radiation Aerosol Transport Experimental Study were also evaluated and complement the ship‐based analysis. There has been little systematic analysis of the influence of the three‐step staircase topography on the characteristics of precipitation along latitude 30°N in East Asia. After the distribution of atmospheric climate states over East Asia was analysed, in this study, the climatological characteristics of summer convective and stratiform precipitation on horizontal distribution, vertical structure, and diurnal variation in East Asia were investigated by using a merged dataset derived from the measurements of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Precipitation Radar and Visible and Infrared Scanner from 1998 to 2012 reanalysis datasets. Results indicate that the rain frequency, the mean rain rate, and the maximum echo reflectivity factor show clear differences among the three‐step staircase topography, especially between the first staircase and its eastern region. There are small changes in the echo‐top height, the cloud‐top height, the maximum echo reflectivity factor and its corresponding height from the East China Sea westwards to the eastern part of the first staircase, passing the third staircase and the second staircase along 30°N. However, the rain rate decreased obviously twice westwards along this latitude, which responds to aerosol indirect effect and humidity effect, respectively. The diurnal variation of the convective precipitation reflectivity factor indicated that the development of convection in the eastern part of the first staircase gets at the maximum from the early afternoon to sunset, whereas the strongest echo reflectivity factor of precipitation in the second and third staircases including the East China Sea appears in the early morning, which is consistent with the diurnal variations of the atmospheric circulation. This article reviews how precipitation microphysics processes are observed in dual-polarization radar observations. These so-called "fingerprints" of precipitation processes are observed as vertical gradients in radar observables. Fingerprints of rain processes are first reviewed, followed by processes involving snow and ice. Then, emerging research is introduced, which includes more quantitative analysis of these dual-polarization radar fingerprints to obtain microphysics model parameters and microphysical process rates. New results based on a detailed rain shaft bin microphysical model are presented, and we conclude with an outlook of potentially fruitful future research directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface, upper‐air, and radar observations are used to assess the performance of the Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System (AMPS) in simulating the mesoscale aspects of a wind and precipitation event over the Ross Island region of Antarctica that spanned January 16–20, 2016. The observations, collected during the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) West Antarctic Radiation Experiment (AWARE), provide a unique dataset for evaluating AMPS, especially the radar observations that facilitate a three‐dimensional depiction of winds and precipitation. Comparisons of AMPS forecast data with surface meteorology, balloon‐sounding, and profiling radar observations at and above sites near McMurdo Station reveal a mixture of similarities and differences. A generally southerly flow is evident at low levels in both the AMPS simulations and observed Doppler radial velocities. AMPS winds are comparable to those observed at the surface and aloft in terms of magnitude, direction, and timing but the strongest simulated southerly flow is displaced eastward relative to the observations. AMPS‐simulated reflectivity over the broader Ross Island region is more limited in areal extent and smaller in magnitude than observed by a scanning Doppler radar. Three episodes of surface precipitation are observed near McMurdo Station over the five‐day event with peak rates of ∼3 mm h−1 and a total accumulation of ∼22 mm. However, AMPS produces no surface precipitation at that location over the five‐day event due to a low‐level dry bias in the forecasts.
