Most power transformers are oil-immersed transformers for which its insulation system consists of oil and cellulosic solid. The insulation liquid impregnates the solid-covering air spaces, which improves the efficiency of the insulation system. Not only does the oil ensure electrical insulation but it also works as coolants transferring the heat generated during transformer operation to the exterior of the transformer. Throughout normal operation conditions, transformers experience multiple stresses that degrade their insulation. Since the lifetime of oil-immersed transformers is defined mainly by the state of the insulation paper, it is critical to understand the behavior and degradation mechanisms of new insulation systems that try to overcome the drawbacks of mineral oil as well as to improve power transformer performances. The current increased prevalence of the nonlinear loads additionally stresses power transformers, which generates their premature ageing or even failure. Consequently, new materials and assessment methods are required to guarantee the suitable management of power transformer populations. In this Special Issue "Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Thermal Ageing in Power Transformers", four papers have been published. This study presents a switch-mode assisted linear amplifier (SMALA) designed for use as a frequency-domain spectroscopy (FDS) excitation voltage source for the diagnostic testing of oil/paper insulation systems in large power transformers. The developed voltage source has a low output voltage noise level and low harmonic content and is capable of driving highly capacitive loads with a maximum output voltage of 800 V(p-p) in the frequency range of DC to 100 Hz and current limited to 20 mA. Disturbances in the output voltage associated with switching of the main switching amplifier are minimised through the control of the switching time, taking the slew rate of the correction amplifier into account. The switching time of the main switching amplifier can be effectively controlled using a combination of a simple RC filter on the output of the main switching amplifier and controlling the rise-time and fall-time of the MOSFET gate drive voltage. Using the developed SMALA unit, it was possible to perform FDS measurement on an oil/paper-insulated transformer at an elevated excitation voltage. This resulted in a non-linear response current, manifesting as odd harmonics in the measured current.

Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), as one of analysis technologies, has shown promisingly industrial applications for significant properties for recent decades such as fast response, preciseness, non-intrusion etc. Here, the authors employed NIRS coupled with a series of physical and chemical tests to assess the ageing condition of oil-paper insulation, which is responsible for the main insulation type of high-voltage power transformer. Among these procedures, the data analytic algorithms are of utmost importance to determine the evaluation precision. After plenty of trial-and-error, Savitzky-Golay (S-G) convolution was finally utilised to de-noise samples and improve the spectral data quality. The competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) was used to select the optimal wavelength combination of NIRS, which is found able to fully extract the effectively spectral information and reduce dimensions of spectral data. Based on the above-mentioned techniques, the quantitative analysis model of NIRS was established by partial least squares (PLS), which could synthetically process the spectral data and the degree of polymerisation (DP) of paper samples. The results indicated that compared with the traditional detection methods, the NIRS analysis is a powerful and informative tool to characterise the condition of oil-paper insulation without intrusion or damage to transformers. Nanofluids, formed by adding nanoscale particles to insulating oil, are stable and homogeneous suspensions that present advanced performance of electrical insulation and heat dissipation. This study shows a comprehensive literature review based on the related results of nano-modified insulating oils (both mineral and vegetable insulating oils) to analyse the preparation methods, stability, dielectric spectroscopy, thermal conductivity, breakdown characteristics under AC and DC voltage, the thermal aging performance of nanofluids and oil–paper interaction. Then theoretical models have been introduced to explain the electrical mechanism of nanofluids. In addition, future research is proposed for nanofluids which would be low cost, highly stable and practically applicable to the power transformers.

The applicability of using 2-furfural (2-FAL) and methanol as aging markers for synthetic ester impregnated paper insulation was investigated through laboratory aging experiments at temperatures of 80, 100 and 120 ?C. Methanol in the synthetic ester increased linearly with paper aging until degree of polymerisation (DP) reached 400. During this period concentration of methanol in oil was higher than that of 2-FAL, which proved the concept of using methanol to indicate early paper aging in the synthetic ester. However, the rate of methanol increase against the reduction of DP in the synthetic ester was about three times higher than that seen in mineral oil. This is due to a difference in the partitioning of the marker between oil and paper. Since the synthetic ester is more polar than the mineral oil, it attracted more methanol molecules from the paper, resulting in a higher concentration of methanol in oil for the same reduction of DP. In addition, a reduction in methanol was observed at the later stage of paper aging at 120 ?C. This could be due to either a change in the partitioning between oil and paper, or an esterification reaction which consumes methanol in the system. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Interest in using vegetable oils as dielectric coolants in power transformers dates back to the early studies on linseed- and castor- based fluids as possible replacements of mineral oil. However, interest in vegetable oils was lost due to their high viscosity and their tendency to oxidize. But, in the early 1990s and due to environmental concerns, the interest in dielectric fluids based on vegetable esters re-emerged. Furfural content in oil is a valuable indicator of cellulose paper degradation and is widely utilized in aging assessment for power transformers. However, with the same aging degree of insulation paper, the actual furfural content in oil is influenced by temperature because furfural partitioning behavior in the oil-paper insulation system of power transformers changes with temperature. Thus, correction of the temperature effect on furfural partitioning is crucial for accurate assessment of the aging of power transformers. In this research, oil-paper samples with different furfural contents were prepared through an accelerated thermal aging test. A furfural equilibrium experiment was conducted at different temperatures to construct a furfural partitioning diagram. The mass fraction of furfural in oil and paper was calculated. Results showed that the mass fraction of furfural in oil increases with temperature rising and aging deepening, which means that furfural tends to migrate from paper to oil at high temperatures and deep aging conditions. The change in furfural partitioning between oil and paper at different temperatures causes a deviation in paper aging assessment. To correct the temperature effect on furfural partitioning, a furfural correction factor was developed to normalize furfural contents in oil at different temperatures to a reference temperature. The furfural correction factor was verified by experimental data and then introduced into the relation between degree of polymerization of paper and furfural content of oil. Verification results showed that the corrected equation can enhance the accuracy of paper aging estimation at different temperatures. The findings of this work indicated temperature effect on furfural partitioning should be considered when determining the furfural thresholds and evaluating the aging condition of power transformers. The water concentration in transformer paper insulation must be monitored because, if it becomes too high, the paper insulation will age rapidly [1]-[4] and the transformer may fail on overload [5]-[9]. A failure can occur on overload if the temperature of the paper rises sufficiently to cause evolution of water bubbles. If these bubbles cause dielectric failure of the oil gap, the transformer may fail catastrophically. Paper insulation becomes brittle as it ages, and eventually becomes too brittle to act as an effective insulator. Oxygen increases the aging rate because the acids created by chemical reactions occurring in the oil, paper, and oxygen react further with water [10]-[12]. A study of the thermal aging of Kraft paper found that wet oxygenated paper degrades 40 times faster than the same paper heated in a dry oxygen-free environment [4]. The paper within a transformer is likely to degrade fastest at the top of the winding, where it is hottest [13]. Since the water concentration in the paper significantly influences its aging, it is important that the water concentration be measured accurately at the top of the winding. The combination of a dielectric solid (paper) and a dielectric liquid (mineral, vegetable, or silicone) is the most commonly used insulation system in power transformers because of the favorable dielectric properties of these insulations and the high heat capacity of the oil, which allows for cooling. Oil-paper insulation, as a major insulation mode used in power transformers, is continuously and unavoidably subjected to repeated lightning impulses, which may bring potential risk to the insulation system. Therefore, in this work, accumulative effect of repeated lightning impulses and its damage mechanism in oil-impregnated paper (OIP) are investigated. Firstly a repetitive impulse accumulating test platform was set up, and tests were performed to confirm the existence of accumulative effect of repeated lightning impulses. Then atomic force microscope observation and frequency domain spectroscopy were carried out on OIP samples with different times of lightning impulses, based on which the influence of lightning impulses accumulative effect on surface morphology and dielectric properties of OIP was investigated. The results indicate that repeated lightning impulses produce accumulative damage to the OIP and hence lead to the morphology change and generation of translucent gelatinous substance on the sample surface. Both the surface roughness and dielectric parameters increase with the accumulating of repeated lightning impulses, which can be attributed to the effects of polar products, fiber deformation and the translucent gelatinous substance together. A post mortem analysis of scrapped transformers provides an opportunity to directly measure the properties of in-service aged paper insulation. Investigations on 10 scrapped 275 kV and 400 kV power transformers were carried out, where Tensile Index (TI) and Low Molecular Weight Acid (LMA) of the paper insulation sampled from various locations were measured. Multiple-layer TI profile demonstrated the effect of oxidized oil on paper ageing which was confirmed by laboratory ageing experiments. It is LMA rather than High Molecular Weight Acid (HMA) that accelerates the paper degradation. LMA acts as the paper ageing accelerator and also as the paper degradation by-product, supporting the view that self-accelerated hydrolysis process is the main paper ageing mechanism. Finally, a generic relationship between LMA in paper and TI of paper was revealed based on both in-service and laboratory ageing data, i.e. the lower the TI of paper, the higher value of LMA in paper is measured. It implies that LMA in oil can be a potential paper ageing indicator pro viding a link between LMA in oil and paper is found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
