The goal of the study was to examine the effect of different types of eye movements on postural stability. Ten healthy young adults (25 ± 3 years) participated in the study. Postural control was measured by the TechnoConcept© platform and recorded in Standard Romberg and Tandem Romberg conditions while participants performed five oculomotor tasks: two fixation tasks (central fixation cross, without and with distractors), two prosaccade tasks toward peripheral targets displayed 4° to the left or to the right of the fixation cross (reactive saccades induced by a gap 0 ms paradigm and voluntary saccades induced by an overlap 600 ms paradigm) and one antisaccade task (voluntary saccade made in the opposite direction of the visual target). The surface, the length, and the mean speed of the center of pressure were analyzed. We found that saccadic eye movements improved postural stability with respect to the fixation tasks. Furthermore, antisaccades were found to decrease postural stability compared to prosaccades (reactive as well as voluntary saccades). This result is in line with the U-shaped nonlinear model described by Lacour et al. (Neurophysiol Clin 38:411-421, 2008), showing that a secondary task performed during a postural task could increase (prosaccade task) or decrease (antisacade task) postural stability depending on its complexity. We suggest that the different degree of attentional resources needed for performing prosaccade or antisaccade tasks are, most likely, responsible for the different effect on postural control.

Several studies in adults having observed the effect of eye movements on postural control provided contradictory results. In the present study, we explored the effect of various oculomotor tasks on postural control and the effect of different postural tasks on eye movements in eleven children (7.8 ± 0.5 years) and nine adults (30.4 ± 6.3 years). To vary the difficulty of the oculomotor task, three conditions were tested: fixation, prosaccades (reactive saccades made toward the target) and antisaccades (voluntary saccades made in the direction opposite to the visual target). To vary the difficulty of postural control, two postural tasks were tested: Standard Romberg (SR) and Tandem Romberg (TR). Postural difficulty did not affect oculomotor behavior, except by lengthening adults' latencies in the prosaccade task. For both groups, postural control was altered in the antisaccade task as compared to fixation and prosaccade tasks. Moreover, a ceiling effect was found in the more complex postural task. Aim: The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of eye re-alignment (after wearing prisms and after eye surgery) on postural stability in children with strabismus. Methods: Nine children with strabismus (6-13 years old) participated in the study. A posturography platform (TechnoConcept) was used to examine posture in quiet stance at two distances: steady fixation of a target at near distance (40 cm) and at far distance (200 cm). Four different conditions were tested: with and without prisms before eye surgery, and twice after eye surgery. Results: The surface of the CoP increased after wearing prisms (540 mm compared to the condition without prisms (462 mm); in contrast, eye surgery reduced the surface of the CoP, leading to improved postural control (454 mm and 401 mm, respectively, in the post 1 and post 2 surgery condition). Unlike normal children, strabismic children showed no improvement in postural control at near distance. Conclusions: Binocular visual and motor changes affect body sway; adaptive mechanisms induced by eye re-alignment after surgery allow improved postural control. The absence of dependency on distance in postural stability in strabismic children could be due to their impaired depth perception and to the poor integrity of the visual signal required to control posture. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the postural control in children with strabismus before and after eye surgery. Control of posture is a complex multi-sensorial process relying on visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems. Reduced influence of one of such systems leads to postural adaptation due to a compensation of one of the other systems . Nine children with strabismus (4–8 years old) participated in the study. Ophthalmologic, orthoptic, vestibular and postural tests were done before and twice (2 and 8 weeks) after eye surgery. Postural stability was measured by a platform (TechnoConcept): two components of the optic flux were used for stimulation (contraction and expansion) and two conditions were tested eyes open and eyes closed. The surface area of the center of pressure (CoP), the variance of speed of the CoP and the frequency spectrum of the platform oscillations by fast Fourier transformation were analysed. Before surgery, similar to typically developing children, postural stability was better in the eyes open condition. The frequency analysis revealed that for the low frequency band more energy was spent in the antero-posterior direction compared to the medio-lateral one while the opposite occurred for the middle and the high frequency bands. After surgery, the eye deviation was reduced in all children and their postural stability also improved. However, the energy of the high frequency band in the medio-lateral direction increased significantly. These findings suggest that eye surgery influences somatosensory properties of extra-ocular muscles leading to improvement of postural control and that binocular visual perception could influence the whole body. La stabilité posturale diminuant avec l'âge, les personnes âgées ont de plus en plus de difficulté à réaliser deux tâches simultanément. En effet, l'augmentation du contrôle moteur et sensoriel pour le maintien de l'équilibre réduit les capacités cognitives, notamment attentionnelles lors de la réalisation de la seconde tâche (Shumway-Cook et Woollacott, 2000). Au cours de la visite d'un musée, les visiteurs vont mobiliser leurs ressources attentionnelles de manière plus intense dans cet environnement nouveau, lors de la découverte des œuvres, pouvant avoir des répercussions sur leurs stabilités posturales. L'objectif de notre travail est de quantifier les performances mnésiques du visiteur en lien avec la posture la plus optimale durant la visite muséale. Vingt personnes âgés de plus de 60 ans observerons de manière attentive 3 œuvres du musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal dans 3 positions différentes : assise, debout et en marche. Les données cinétiques seront recueillies par une plateforme de force et les données cinématiques par des semelles connectées. Les capacités mnésiques seront évaluées après chaque position sous forme de rappel indicé de chaque oeuvre observée. Un questionnaire de ressenti sera proposé à la fin de l'expérimentation afin d'apprécier le confort des participants. L'observation d'un tableau en position assise, réduisant les ressources du contrôle postural, devrait entraîner de meilleures performances dans la tâche mnésique chez les participants (Albinet et al., 2006). Par la suite, en mettant en relation les perfomances sensorielles, motrices et cognitives, nous devrions pouvoir proposer des pistes de réflexion pour un aménagement favorable à l'optimisation posturale et mnésique d'une visite muséale pour la personne âgée. Il est aujourd'hui admis que la réalisation d'une activité cognitive impacte le contrôle postural (Polskaia et Lajoie, 2016). Cependant, la question de l'impact de l'activité posturale sur les performances cognitives est moins documentée. L'objectif de cette étude est de déterminer la meilleure association : activité cognitive - posture permettant les meilleures performances cognitives. Alloway et al. (2016) ont observé de meilleures performances pour l'activité de mémoire pendant la marche et Beauchet et al. (2005) ont observé de meilleures performances pour le calcul mental en position assise. Dans notre étude, 24 participants (23,5 + 2,84 ans, 10 femmes) ont réalisé deux activités cognitives (mémoire et calcul mental), dans trois postures (debout, assis et marche). Grâce au système d'analyse de mouvements Codamotion (Gao et al., 2017), les paramètres du Centre de Pression (CdP) et cinématiques ont été enregistrés et analysés. Nos résultats confirment que la posture influence les performances cognitives ; un meilleur taux de bonnes réponses pour le calcul en position assise et un meilleur taux de mots correctement rappelés pendant la marche. La position et la vitesse moyenne du CdP ne varient pas selon les activités cognitives. Par ailleurs, la vitesse de marche est moins importante lors de l'activité de mémoire que lors de l'activité de calcul mental. L'association marche–activité de mémoire permet à l'individu d'être plus libre dans ses mouvements et dans sa manière de mémoriser l'information par rapport à la rigidité de l'activité de calcul qui est stricte et restreinte et qui serait mieux associée à une posture assise plus rigide. Introduction L'existence d'une interaction entre la tâche cognitive et la tâche posturale a été démontrée [1] mais aucune étude à notre connaissance n'a réalisé, dans la même population, une observation de différentes fonctions cognitives dans différentes postures. L'objectif de cette étude préliminaire, réalisée chez le jeune adulte, est de mettre en évidence une optimisation des performances cognitives lors de la variation de la posture. Matériel et méthode Quatorze jeunes adultes (22,40 ± 1,84 ans) ont accompli quatre tâches cognitives (calcul, mémoire, attention et inhibition) dans trois postures différentes (Romberg, assise classique et assise ergonomique Héphaistos©), durant 33 secondes chacune. Les oscillations corporelles (AccuswayPlus AMTI©) ont été enregistrées. Les performances cognitives ont été analysées à partir du nombre de réponses correctes ; les oscillations corporelles par l'étude du centre des déplacements, surface et vitesse du centre de pressions (CdP). Résultats préliminaires Les premiers résultats soulignent des oscillations corporelles (surface et déplacements moyens du CdP) plus importantes en posture debout qu'assise, mais pour le même effort musculaire impliqué (vitesse moyenne du CdP équivalente). Cependant, la performance cognitive ne s'est pas révélée significativement différente, pour les 4 tâches cognitives, selon la posture testée. Discussion/Conclusion La performance cognitive ne varie pas selon la posture testée, la difficulté des tâches cognitives ne challengeait pas assez ou trop le participant [2]. L'introduction d'une variation de niveaux de difficulté de la tâche cognitive est à tester afin de mettre en évidence des différences de performances cognitives selon les postures.
