The never-ending contemporaneity of William Shakespeare's Macbeth is established by the experimental adaptations of the play that have transcended time and space. The filmic adaptations, in particular, have recontextualized the original dramatic text in several innovative ways. This paper sets out to analyse from certain postmodern angles the creative and innovative adaptation of a classic literary text from a Scottish setting to two completely different Indian settings (geographically, culturally and politically) and also from 16th century Scotland, United Kingdom to two different time periods in India - Maqbool (director Vishal Bhardwaj, 2003) being a reimagination of Macbeth set in the 21st century underworld of Mumbai, India and Veeram (director Jayaraj, 2016) being an attempt to link the play with 13th century Kerala, India. The transmutations occur at multiple levels and this lends new interpretations to the text in two entirely different temporal and spatial contexts, though both of these adaptations are Indian. - Abstract
This paper expands on the art historical context of Elona Lubytė’s project Quiet Modernism (1997)—which is now widely acknowledged as a certain point of reference in soviet art studies and art distribution—with the aim to introduce other concepts relevant to Lithuanian art history. Here the modernisation of art that began during the decade of the Khrushchev Thaw is discursively separated from other modernisms or, rather, (post)modernisms that are currently being invented as a result of using the (Jacques Ranciére’s) aesthetic regime to interpret the late soviet art. When researching the art of the past, particularly that of the periods of political oppression, it is crucial to distinguish between the productive and reproductive approaches, as well as to differentiate between the perspectives of creator and perceiver. Art production and historical distribution are deeply rooted in the milieus of each period, therefore we should also consider not only the art shows in remote areas and other nuances of ‘quiet modernism’, but also the clamorous modernisation of the official art. In other words, it is not only about the resistance against the sovietisation of art, but also about the very project of sovietisation as such. Viewed from our current perspective and linked with the discursive contexts that are relevant to the interpreters themselves, the soviet artworks become freed from the historical clutches of a particular epoch and enter a more universal discourse. The year 1997 was a particularly favourable time to invent some of those possible ‘local’ modernisms. The end of the 20th century saw a renewal of the debates on the heritage of the Western modern art. This project is still pertinent in the context of the multiple, extended, repeating, and recurring global modernities. The fact that, in the field of Lithuanian art, artists are showing their interest in modernist heritage, proves that the currently ongoing process of ‘reloading’ the modernism is very much alive. The paper also gives an overview of this new stage of modernist development in Lithuania. Some of the works by middle-aged artists are just as attributable to the new modernism as those by the young generation. With their serene and constructive attitudes, the former are displaying purity of forms (but not that of media) that they clarify, reactivate, reference, and reflect on. The paper concludes with the question: why the 20th century Lithuanian modernism is still excluded from the global history of the ‘reloaded’ modernism, and why is it not featured at the representative art ‘centres’? This might be due to the fact that Lithuania still lacks a clearly articulated visual narrative of its own modernism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Postmodernism, as a hegemon, has determined the cultural coordinates of audiovisual products in the last decades. Since 2008, some shows have creatively questioned its main principles, such as superficiality, cynicism-bordering irony and the lack of alternative to all this (Francis Fukuyama's end of history). BoJack Horseman (executive producers Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Noel Bright, Steven A. Cohen, Blair Fetter, Jane Wiseman, Will Arnett, Aaron Paul and Andy Weill, 2014-2019), the Netflix series, follows the struggles in the life of the eponymous character, star of the 1990s sitcom Horsin' Around, and his exhaustion from the vacuity of life in Hollywood, United States. Surrounded by his peculiar entourage, viewers witness all sorts of unimportant nonsense and risible statements to ultimately engage in the story and meet old characters under a new light. After many seasons, our understanding of them changes and we are forced to revaluate our consideration of them, engaging sympathetically and leaving behind an individualist detachment some authors, like David Foster Wallace, criticised in the past. This only comes to happen because of the creative use of animation, the script and characters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Recently, objects of the so-called “modern heritage” have been gaining more and more attention from heritage protection institutions. The majority of buildings of the period does not comply with the formal 50-year age requirement applicable to protected objects. Respectively, it is more complicated to establish their valuable qualities, and this often provokes all kinds of conflicts. Samples of such architecture decline, or the issue of their value is resolved in the presence of actual threat to their physical condition. By taking into consideration one of the “youngest” periods - the architecture of postmodernism, the article aims at reviewing the context of fixing the criteria for recognizing modern architecture as protected heritage. With a hypothesis being raised that compliance with a certain historical and stylistic trend should be considered a sign of valuable architecture, the chronological and aesthetic evaluation perspectives of postmodern architecture and features of its expression are discussed in the article. - Abstract
In contemporary society the new organizational forms take pace, which enable individuums to form some kind of common identities by reaching consumers communities. Consumerism is the main feature of such communities, which may be called as certain “tribes” with their values and they develop as capitalist system deepens and widens. Postmodernism creates such cultural environment, which forms “tribal marketing” phenomena as mobilizing different groups for the more developed, clearly defined and specific consumption. The authors in the article seek to reveal the impact of postmodernist consumerism to the formation of “tribal marketing” and the development of this phenomena vice/versa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In the article the paradigm of traditional public administration is analysed by trying to accomplish the critique of the model in the cultural dimension direction and by identifying the crucial elements of post-modernism which, according to the authors, had made an impact for the formation of such a model. There are also revealed the parameters of post-modernism in metanarrative theories of rationality, as the grounded technological and instrumental relation towards traditional paradigm principles by stressing the hierarchical governance, bureaucratic relations, control mechanisms, rational organisational structure and functional division with professionalism. By identifying the main traits of traditional paradigm, the aspects and tendencies of post-modernist organisations are revealed and the controversial answer to the question about the relevance of traditional public administration model is presented. POSTMODERN architecture , *ARCHITECTURE competitions , *POSTMODERNISM (Philosophy) , *ARCHITECTURE , *ESTIMATION theory , *ARCHITECTURAL history , *SOCIOCULTURAL factors - Abstract
The research work analyzes the influence of the post-modernism phenomenon on Lithuanian architecture as observed since the 1970-s. This controversially estimated period in architectural history opposed the modernist tradition by its cultural and aesthetical landmarks. In the Lithuanian context it was distinguished by the raise of its expression partially overlapping with the period of post-soviet socio-cultural fractures. After short introduction of prerequisites of postmodernist idea formation in architecture, the text focuses on the main ideological concepts and characteristic features of architecture related to postmodernism. Besides the evaluation of influence of western postmodernist architecture on the soviet space, the aim of the article is to analyze the objects innovative by their aesthetics, applied symbolism and treatment of their application to the society in the sociocultural context of the time. The text focuses on unrealized projects and competition offers of the 1970-s and 80-s (from the emergence of the first examples to the reestablishment of Lithuanian independence) with most brightly reflected postmodern trends: complex composition, eclecticism, historical references and decreasing scale. The examples analyzed in the research are a part of culture of the complicated transformation time, which is underestimated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PUBLIC administration , *COMMUNITY development , *SOCIAL context , *DECISION making , *SOCIAL cognition theory (Communication) , *IDEOLOGY , *SOCIAL ethics - Abstract
The process of state governance changes invoked various theoretical elements, ways of cognition, decisionmaking and effect at different periods. Apart from the prevailing positivism, as theoretical basis, today there are features of liberation from restrictive beliefs, attitudes, and ideologies, which determine governance decisions that already possess well-established elements of criticism of values. The priority in governance decisions is more often being given to the achievement of public goals, personal freedom, the needs and values of civil society. Ethical values, ethical commitments are important, and communities may and must be their support and control guarantee. It is obvious that one cannot analyze these matters and expect that they will always be unchangeable and independent, beyond the influence of emerging and entrenching new theories or ideological modifications, philosophical currents as well as postmodernism. The article provides the analysis of the key elements of postmodernism, which may fundamentally affect the emerging new model of public governance whereas the model formation circumstances are determined by different political, economic, social, and cultural contexts; there are different society or community development conditions, their civil maturity and level. Possible negative postmodernism impacts on the formation of governance models are revealed here, new public governance and communities are brought to the status of values and priorities. The article is based on J. F. Loytard, J. Boudrillard, Z. Bauman, M. Featherston (philosophical, sociological discourse); G. Peters, J. E. Lane, C. Hood, J. V. Denhardtand R. B. Denhardt (public governance modernization problems);Ch. Taylor, A. M. Robinson, A. Mason, P. Selznick (communautarising). The works of H. T. Millerand C. J. Fox, P. Bogason were analyzed as well. Attention in the article is paid to the possible synthesis of these problems, i.e. integration of the key features of postmodernism with the elements of new public governance, reasoning the community as the value of new public governance. COMPOSITION in architecture , *SPACE (Architecture) , *ARCHITECTURE & history , *POSTMODERN architecture , *HISTORY - Abstract
One of the most important features in historical architectural compositions is geometrical rendition of architectural space and volume. This feature was highlighted in terms of architecture of Modernism. According to the theory of modem architecture and Geschtalt Psychology, elementary geometrical forms and main spatial features were underlined and accepted as anthropomorphic principle of architecture. Even today main spatial characteristics are accepted as a key principle of architectural composition. However, architects and critics of contemporary - post-modern and deconstructive - architecture emphasize the value of architectural narrative achieved not only through perception of space, but also by its relationship to social and cultural meanings and subtext of architecture. A narrative, as architectural feature, is realized in some compositions of the deconstructivist and postmodern architecture, both worldwide and in Lithuania. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DECONSTRUCTIVISM (Architecture) , *POSTMODERN architecture , *ARCHITECTURE movements , *ECLECTICISM in architecture , *IDEOLOGY - Abstract
Lately, the death of postmodern style in art is heard of more and more often. The question of whether the recently prevailing deconstructivist architecture could be considered an extension of postmodern architecture is often raised in the research discourse on architecture. Among the main features that are considered to be postmodern architecture are: quoting historical styles and eclecticism, ornaments and decorativism, ironic and a playful authors' relationship to the architectural forms. However, the creators of deconstructivist architecture usually avoid these components. Creators of deconstructivist architecture do not quote historical architectural styles or their elements and they don't strive to restore traditional architectural forms. They don't try to fake the history of architecture, and they employ archetypical forms only in an indirect way - by contradicting them. In the work of deconstructivist architecture the time of construction is easily identifiable and Zeitgeist ideology is usually evident. Deconstructive creators are more likely to employ the idea of spectrality, when the signs of the time are preserved in the historical land plot. Architects of deconstructivism don't particularly use simple geometric forms or ornaments. These forms are included into architecture only in a deconstructed and deformed manner using repetition, detachment, displacement, insertion and division principles. Complex irregular geometric forms that in some way substitute the ornament and decorativism of postmodern architecture prevail in this architectural trend. For architects striving for the deconstructivism ideology the ironic relation to their work is also contrary. Their work often creates architectural drama or even a sense of physical danger for the viewers. From the theory, and from practice, it is evident that the principles of creating deconstructivist architecture do not match some of the main principles of creating postmodern architecture. Though these two contemporary architectural trends have some unquestionable similarities, they should not be confused due to their main ideological differences. Deconstructivist architecture should be considered one of the trends of postmodernism, and thus related to postmodern architecture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTERIOR architecture , *DWELLINGS , *DOMESTIC architecture , *URBAN planning - Abstract
With Lithuania's regained statehood and introduction of free market conditions, the image of ours towns has improved. However, we can also observe some negative aspects: predominance of commercialism, manifestations of kitsch, particulary in interiors. Several kitsch manifestation trends can be distinguished in modern interior: (1) "Wild West", reflections of the American cowboy cult and (2) primitive "national", "country" style. Currently the trends of architecture stylized with folk art motives are flourishing, when using naturalistic, sham elements bad taste interiors are created that demonstrate a vulgar understanding of national traditions. Original interiors created in the 60s-80s are destroyed. Modern and stylish interiors in Vilnius, Kaunas, and other towns did not survive. Kitsch could be noticed in architecture of private dwelling houses as well, when buildings remind of castles, mills, elevators, etc. due to the use of unusual symbols. Manifestations of kitsch in the design of modern interior and urban architecture could be linked to post-modernism that propagates eclecticism, orientation to regionalism, "country" forms, retrospection to historism, "citing" in modern architecture historical and "local dialect" forms from a paradox to an ironic sarcasm. CULTURE , *LAW , *AUTOPOIESIS , *THEORY - Abstract
The correlation of the EU law and the culture are analysed in the article. The miscellaneous nature of the analysed subject-matter demonstrates the complexity of combining hardly compatible elements, namely, the culture and law, into a juridical structure, the latter lacking not only a clear centre but also a specific plan to establish the interrelation between the subjects. The aim of the paper is to investigate the correlation of the culture and the EU law under theoretical and practical aspects. To achieve the aim, the following objectives were raised : a) to introduce the perspective of the culture and the EU law by revealing dominating problems and tendencies; b) to present the relation between the EU law and culture in the background of N. Luhmann's theory of autopoiesis; c) to review the scope of the culture as regulated in the Consolidated Version Of the Treaty On the European Union together with the judicial practice as a whole. Observations on the nature of modern culture, as seen in the context of the EU legal and political goals, are presented in the introductory part. In the first part of the article, the analysis of the culture concept as a multidimensional element is given; in the second part, a short review of the EU law and culture under the autopoiesis or organized systems' theory, which particularly suits the purpose of revealing the analysis of coherence search, is presented. This theory enabled to analyse the culture in the European Union law in the context of systems, and to clarify the relationship of the EU law and the culture in the cases when there is a try to judicially define the system and the concept of culture in the EU law. In the third part, more consideration is given to the analysis of the EU legal base. Initially, the European Community underlined the priority of economic development, thus, there was no wonder that the question of culture was ignored. However, in the course of Community development, the significance of culture was growing until it became a new matter of interest of the EU in Maastricht. Consequently, the commentary on Article 151 of the Consolidated Version Of the Treaty On the European Union is distinguished in the paper. Alongside, cases pertinent to the presented theme are selected. In conclusion, the findings and the evaluation of the EU law and the culture interrelation are presented by taking into consideration the goals of law and the synthesis of law practices and culture. Postmodernism represents an assault on the approach realists have taken to conceptualizing knowledge and order. It shows no regard for the principles and standards that have allowed societies to grow and prosper. With respect to current politics, it is believed that postmodernism discards the commitments and moral guidelines that have enabled a range of activists to intervene at appropriate times to improve the conditions of disadvantaged persons. It seems that postmodernism has undermined any valid basis for formulating a fair and equitable social contract and giving credence to postmodernism is synonymous with embracing social atomism and accepting the laissez-faire outlook on economics and other aspects of social life. Because the philosophy of laissez-faire provides no basis for order other than freely chosen contacts, which many conservatives believe are optional, social correctives have no purpose. Indeed, considering the resulting elusive nature of society, where are interventions supposed to be directed?

[…], This essay is an excerpt from the forthcoming book - Critical Discourse in Sociology. Between Positivism and Postmodernism. The essay deals with the dilemmas of relativism. The sociological concept of relativity of last decades was formulated as the integral part of sociological inquiry, aimed at the methodological complexity and some critical character of sociological thought. The intellectual transformation of recent sociology has been accompanied by a proliferation of alternative theories and concepts. Given the acute understanding of socially determined and arbitrary character of knowledge, the new sociological identity is being shaped by the pluralist context of latter-day sociological inquiry. This essay attempts an appraisal of differences in alternative modes of knowledge by exploring critically its various thematic features. As sociology‘s ongoing internal struggles continue, it is appropriate to ask whether the multidimensional approach is able to employ its own relativistic elements and maybe analytic techniques in the process of keeping itself more useful to the social sciences.
