Purpose. The post-COVID challenges led to rethinking the Portuguese tourism policy within the context of reinforcing the goals of sustainability. Despite the high complexity of perspectives on tourism planning, this paper aims at discussing the importance of tourism planning and management to achieve sustainable tourism development. Method. The paper is a literature review on tourism planning and management. Simultaneously, categorial content analysis is conducted with regard to Portuguese tourism challenges and planning tools. Findings. Tourism is a strategic sector for the Portuguese sustainable development as recognised in a set of planning tools, such as "Tourism Strategy 2027" [TP 2017], "The Reactivate Tourism. Build the Future Action Plan" [TP 2021a], and the "+ Sustainable Tourism Plan: 2020-23 - More than a challenge, it is the way" [TP 2021b]. Sustainability, inclusiveness, cohesion, participation, dialogue, integration, conservation, preservation, innovation and responsibility are keywords in this process. Research limitations and conclusions. The discussion about Portuguese tourism planning can be deepened considering other methodological tools, such as interviews with tourism planning stakeholders, in order to evaluate its effectiveness as well as future planning trends in a post-COVID-19 pandemic and within the volatile context of the war in Ukraine. Originality. The number of publications associated with Portuguese tourism planning is limited, thus highlighting the need for more studies. Type of paper. A case study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The need to direct research towards the tourism industry is related to the increasingly competitive environment it fi nds itself in, especially in terms of services rendered, having grown more complex in the features and critique that comprise the tourist experience, and as economic and social agents become more selective regarding both demand and supply. Possessing information and the proper understanding of the real needs of information users and those responsible for public and private decision-making processes at the action and intervention levels becomes a fundamental issue for sustainable tourism growth and its statement for international competitiveness. This paper proposes a tourism research agenda for Portugal in order to guide future developments towards the industry’s needs.

Destination image ,Portugal ,Residents ,Tourists ,Cognitive-affective approach - Abstract
This study aims to measure the image of Lagos in the Algarve region, the most important Portuguese destination, using a cognitive, affective and behavioral approach. Given the lack of studies which compare the perspectives of tourists and residents, the empirical investigation includes a mixed methodology enabling a holistic approach followed by a quantitative methodology with the use of questionnaires for both tourists and residents. The attributes that are more consensually associated with Lagos are the good weather and good beaches, although these variables do not have significant discriminatory power for "recommendation of the destination to friends and family" as the dependent variable.

Previous studies show that the quality of the tourist experience is aff ected by a large set of factors, many of which not directly related to the acquisition of specifi c products or services. Research also shows that tourist satisfaction is a determinant of destination loyalty. Th is study explores this topic by empirically analysing how the relationship between the satisfaction with the tourist experience and destination loyalty is aff ected by personal factors, such as socio-demographic characteristics and travelling motivations. Th is study is based on a small region representing an important destination in Algarve, Portugal, and uses data from a survey conducted on tourists of diff erent nationalities during peak season. We identify the reasons leading to dissatisfaction with the tourism experience and, based on structural equation modelling, ascertain the relationship between satisfaction levels with the tourism experience and tourist destination loyalty. Th en, a multiple group analysis provides a detailed overview of this relationship by establishing in which groups of tourists the relatedness between satisfaction and destination loyalty is stronger or weaker. In this sense, this study provides an important backdrop for destination managers looking to off er more eff ective and targeted marketing strategies.

RURAL development ,RURAL tourism ,TOURIST attractions - Abstract
This case study describes a good practice in the rural tourism field. At the end of 2005, a young entrepreneur found a deserted village in the South of Portugal, where only seven locals were left from the initial dwellers. He and his colleagues decided to buy and rebuild the houses, a pile of ruins, and develop a rural tourism village project. The village's integration in the Natura 2000 network and its close proximity to the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park allows multi-sensory experiences based on nature-based activities. Although oriented towards tourism, the project has benefited the local community. It includes the organisation of local events, partnerships with local enterprises and the support of the local council. Recently, the project aims to gather local enterprises into a single structure of public access, with a view to create conditions for higher quality nature-based experiences and job opportunities for locals. Furthermore, tourism in rural areas is also seen as a complement to the seasonal 'sun and sand tourism in Algarve. This paper aims to discuss the economical, social, cultural and environmental implications of the project, presenting a contextualization regarding the recent developments of rural tourism in Portugal. TOURIST attractions ,PORTUGAL description & travel ,TOURISM - Abstract
Located in the south of Portugal, the Algarve belongs to the top twenty travel destinations worldwide, with a local economy relying strongly on tourism-related activities. The Allgarve programme was launched in 2007 and is an umbrella brand that aims to reposition the Algarve as a refined tourism destination with glamour. Allgarve is a set of cultural, artistic and sports events offered mainly during the summer season. Based on data from a questionnaire carried out with 282 foreign tourists who visited the Algarve, this study identifies and profiles clusters of tourists based on their perceptions of Allgarve. In addition, we analyse to what extent the image of the Algarve has changed as a consequence of the Allgarve events. The results show that most respondents agree with the Allgarve brand name, report a positive perception of the campaign, and agree that it has a positive impact for the Algarve differentiation. However, the results suggest that the majority of tourists still come to the region attracted by the Algarve brand, and that this brand has not been affected by the Allgarve programme's content. The findings of this study are important in understanding the implications of events in repositioning strategies of mature tourism destinations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FISH farming , *UNSATURATED fatty acids , *AQUACULTURE , *BODY composition of fish - Abstract
Abstract Being a rich source of important nutrients, including highly digestible proteins, vitamins (A, D3), trace minerals (iodine, selenium) and n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFA), fish consumption is generally regarded as part of a healthy dietary pattern. Exogenous feeding in aquaculture unlocks the possibility to tailor fish composition with healthy valuable nutrients. However, the use of supplements in the fish feed during fish production may undermine consumers' perception opinion of these fortified products. The effectiveness success of a functional food is a combination of its efficacy and meeting consumers' expectations. A self-administered questionnaire was designed to assess consumers' preferences regarding fish consumption, and their perception of farmed seabream as a functional food. A high consumption rate of fish, (between daily, and a minimum of three times a week), was reported by 47% of the respondents. Freshness, flavour, quality and price were the four most valued attributes. Good acceptance of the fish fortification concept was observed (53%), as well as positive receptiveness to its consumption (50%). Anti-oxidants and omega-3 fatty acids were the most accepted compounds for fish fortification. Additionally, two consumer groups were established based on their high (HIG) or low (LIG) interest in fish origin (wild vs aquaculture). The LIG was more receptive to all aspects of fish fortification and showed willingness to buy and consume it. This suggests that fortified fish could be targeted to the LIG profile group, which represents 42% of the studied population. With appropriate communication, farmed fish may be a good candidate for functional food. Highlights • Almost half of respondents consume fish daily or at least three times a week. • 52% agreed with fish fortification and 50% showed willingness to its consumption. • Omega-3 and antioxidants were the preferred fortification compounds. • Respondents with low interest on fish origin were more receptive to fortification.
