The paper aims at investigating the relationship between Trumpism and the European far-right parties. The combination of shared ideological cores with the confrontation of similar “enemies” has resulted in the creation of an unprecedented relationship, wherein Trump takes the role of “international godfather” and inspiration for the European far right. To examine this relation, the paper focuses on references to Donald Trump and his policies and statements from 2016 to 2020 in the discourse of Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), Hungarian Civilian Alliance (Fidesz), and Lega Nord (Lega). The examination of the discourse of the three parties about security, immigration, foreign policy, and corruption shows that these parties have utilised Trumpism in three manners. Firstly, they have employed Trumpism to normalise certain pre-existing far-right ideologies and practices within their national and European context. Secondly, they have emulated Trump’s discourse and policies to capitalise on his popularity and support their national endeavours. Thirdly, they have used Trump’s fight and ideas to justify national measures, beliefs, criticism, or political goals. This paper thus aims to establish the leitmotifs governing the use of Trumpism by European far right to set the framework for future more critical analyses and a better understanding of this unprecedented relationship. Celem artykułu jest zbadanie relacji między Trumpizmem a skrajnie prawicowymi partiami politycznymi w Europie. Połączenie wspólnych rdzeni ideologicznych i konfrontacji z podobnymi „wrogami” doprowadziło do powstania niespotykanej dotąd relacji, w której Trump odgrywa rolę „międzynarodowego ojca chrzestnego” i inspiratora europejskiej skrajnej prawicy. W celu zbadania tej relacji praca skupia się na odniesieniach do aktywności Donalda Trumpa, jego polityki i wypowiedzi w latach 2016–2020 w dyskursie Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), Węgierskiej Partii Obywatelskiej (Fidesz) i Lega Nord (Lega). Analiza dyskursu trzech partii w zakresie bezpieczeństwa, imigracji, polityki zagranicznej i korupcji pokazuje, że partie te wykorzystały Trumpizm jako inspirację w trzech aspektach. Po pierwsze, użyły go do normalizacji wcześniej istniejących skrajnie prawicowych ideologii i praktyk w kontekście narodowym i europejskim. Po drugie, naśladowali dyskurs Trumpa i jego polityki do zwiększenia jego popularności i wsparcia własnych dążeń narodowościowych. Po trzecie, wykorzystali walkę i idee Trumpa do uzasadnienia narodowych metod, wierzeń, krytyk i celów politycznych. Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass in Regionen mit hohem Zuspruch zu Parteien der radikalen Rechten eine hohere Skepsis bzw. Distanz zu demokratischen Institutionen und damit einhergehend eine geringere Akzeptanz der Schutzmasnahmen vorherrscht, prufen wir, inwiefern sich diese Unterschiede in der politischen Raumkultur auf die Inzidenzentwicklungen auswirken. Wir nutzen neben Daten zum Infektionsgeschehen die Wahlergebnisse und Nichtwahlendenanteile vergangener Bundestagswahlen und zahlreiche soziostrukturelle Variablen fur die 401 Kreise und kreisfreien Stadte. Zur Modellierung der dynamischen An- und Abstiegsphasen greifen wir auf latente Wachstumsmodelle zuruck. Die Ergebnisse zeigen hohe signifikante Effekte der AfD Zweitstimmenanteile auf die Anstiege der Infektionszahlen in beiden Wellen – sowohl in Ost- als auch in Westdeutschland. Fur andere im Bundestag vertretene Parteien lassen sich keine systematischen Effekte auf die Anstiegsphase beider Wellen finden. Dazu kann gezeigt werden, dass auch die Zweitstimmenanteile rechtsextremer Kleinparteien und die Nichtwahlendenanteile zu den Bundestagswahlen 2005 und 2013 positive Effekte auf die Inzidenzentwicklungen haben; das weist auf eine hohe Persistenz politischer und demokratischer Distanz in Teilen dieser Regionen hin. The impact of spatial political factors on the incidence rates in Germany Summary In this article we examine the impact of spatial political culture on regional differences in the Corona-incidences in both pandemic expansion phases in spring 2020 as well as autumn/winter 2020. Based on the assumption that regions with high support for parties of the radical right are also dominated by higher levels of scepticism towards democratic institutions, accompanied by lower acceptance of protective measures, we analyse this impact on the progression of the incidence rates. We use election results and the quota of non-voters of past federal elections as well as numerous socio-structural variables for 401 districts and independent cities in Germany. To model the dynamic of increasing and decreasing phases we use latent growth models. The results indicate high significant positive effects of the election result for the far right AfD on the increase in infection rates in both phases – and in East Germany as well as in West Germany. There are no systematic effects on the increase in infections rates in both phases for other parties that are part of the German parliament. Furthermore, it can be shown that quotas for small parties of the radical right as well as quotas of non-voters in the federal elections of 2005 and 2013 have positive effects on the progression of incidence, indicating a high persistence of political and democratic distance in parts of these regions. Online radicalisation is often linked to discourses on social media. In this context, the question arises how populist online discourses radicalise in social media platforms. With a quantitative content analysis of supporters of the German party “Alternative für Deutschland (AfD)” and their contributions on Facebook between March 2014 and May 2017, this preliminary analysis illustrates how the discourse shifts from a dominantly neutral debate to insult-driven and dis-criminatory contributions. It provides insights into the dynamic of political social media dis-courses and shows a tendency of correlating language style and topics that can be further studied in Social Media Analytics.

This project page entails information about and the pre-registration of "Radical Right Voters, their thoughts, values, and motivation." In the project, the two authors aim to explore thoughts, values, and motivation of radical right supporters in Eastern Germany. Using semi-structured interviews, we will investigate particular concepts promising to be relevant motivators of radical right support (e.g., anti-immigration attitudes, identity threat, gender values, whiteness, among others) among supporters of the radical right voters in three Eastern German states in August 2021. About a month before the election, the German context is highly politicized, with the Eastern German states bearing particular interest because of their strong radical right support in recent years. With this pre-registration, we aim to transparently inform other researchers about the a priori aims, the method, and the intended analyses of this project before entering the field. The project has been considered and accepted for ethical clearance by the author's first institution's responsible national ethics review board, the Swedish Etikprövningsmyndigheten.

Previous studies aimed at explaining populist support emphasize the crucial role of populist attitudes and ideology among the general population. With respect to the role of discontent and grievances as drivers of populist support—often at the heart of theoretical work on populism—however, empirical results are rather mixed. We argue that the apparent contradictions are partly due to insufficient conceptualization of discontent. We distinguish between societal-centered discontent, which is more based on a general, negative subjective assessment of society, and self-centered discontent that expresses a negative assessment of one’s personal situation. In line with our expectations, regression results for Germany confirm that society-centered discontent, but not self-centered discontent, is important for populist party support. Moreover, we find that society-centered discontent also moderates the relation between populist attitudes and populist support. We conclude that beyond ideologies, populism capitalizes on the cultivation of collective—but not individual—discontent.

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged nearly every aspect of life and superseded issues at the core of populist radical right (PRR) parties' ideology, dispossessing them of one of their main narratives. This also challenged the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a relatively young but strong PRR party in opposition. We explore how the party has adjusted its policy supply to this unprecedented situation and how this has affected its popularity among German voters, building our analysis on press releases issued by the AfD between January 2020 and March 2021, vote intention data and recent election results. Initially, the party's reaction was inconsistent, but from autumn 2020 the AfD focused on fuelling discontent with the government's lockdown measures, acting as a supporter of the anti-coronavirus demonstrations. It framed its response as elite critique. So far, its siding with the lockdown protesters, however, has not had any positive effect on support for the party.

Examining the German case in the wider Western European context for the period 1996–2017, the chapter investigates the role of supply and demand factors for vote switching in general and switching to right-wing populist parties in particular. Combining survey data from the CSES with party data from the Manifesto Project, the chapter shows that the growing success of right-wing populist parties, in Germany just as in other Western European countries, was a response to programmatic moves of mainstream center-left and center-right parties to the left. In general, voters' movements between parties did not follow a symmetric pattern. Changes to parties further left came about as responses to increasing voter-party distances on the socio-economic dimension. In the more recent past, switches to parties further right and, in particular, right-wing populist parties like the German AfD became more frequent, and they were associated with increasing distances on the socio-cultural dimension. Wie die AfD und PEGIDA in Deutschland haben auch viele andere populistische Parteien und Bewegungen in Westeuropa im letzten Jahrzehnt sehr erfolgreich Bürgerinnen und Bürger für ihre Politik mobilisiert. Viele dieser Parteien teilen das Narrativ einer anhaltenden gesellschaftlichen Abwärtsentwicklung, die nur durch Intervention der populistischen Führung gestoppt werden kann. Populistische Parteien fordern die stärkere Implementierung der Volksinteressen in den politischen Prozess und die Absetzung der abgehobenen (politischen) Eliten. Unterschiedliche politik- und kommunikationswissenschaftliche Studien legen einen Zusammenhang von Populismus, Krise und substanzieller politischer Beteiligung nahe. Dieses Papier verknüpft die bisherigen Erklärungsansätze, indem es testet, ob entsprechende politische Präferenzen und die Kommunikation von Parteien in sozialen Medien das Partizipationsverhalten erklären können. Die Ergebnisse einer Online-Umfrage mit integriertem Experiment (N= 1.696) belegen, dass populistische Einstellungen sowohl die Wahlabsicht für die AfD als auch die Protestintention positiv beeinflussen, während gesellschaftliche Unzufriedenheit die populistische Parteiwahl, nicht aber Protest vorhersagt. Gleichzeitig finde ich in der empirischen Analyse keine Hinweise auf eine mobilisierende Wirkung populistischer oder krisenhafter Kommunikation. Durch die vergleichende Betrachtung von Angebots- und Nachfrageseite leistet dieses Papier damit einen Beitrag zur Erklärung der Dynamiken populistischer Mobilisierung.

Eine bedeutende, aber unterentwickelte Erklärung für den Aufstieg des Populismus verweist auf das Gefühl, von der Entwicklung der Gesellschaft "abgehängt" zu sein. Im Kern steht die These, dass die Unterstützung des Populismus von der Wahrnehmung getrieben wird, nicht die gesellschaftliche Anerkennung zu erhalten, die man verdient. Dieser Beitrag baut auf der Erkenntnis auf, dass das Gefühl mangelnder Anerkennung auf unterschiedliche Weise und aus unterschiedlichen Gründen auftreten kann. Wir argumentieren, dass - aufgrund dieses facettenreichen Charakters - die gemeinsame Wahrnehmung einer fehlenden gesellschaftlichen Anerkennung ansonsten heterogene Bevölkerungsschichten in ihrer Unterstützung für den Populismus vereint. Basierend auf Daten aus der Vorwahlbefragung der German Longitudinal Election Study zur Bundestagswahl 2021 untersucht unsere präregistrierte Studie die multiplen Wurzeln populistischer Einstellungen in Gefühlen mangelnder gesellschaftlicher Anerkennung. Erstens weisen unsere Ergebnisse darauf hin, dass - von Individuen in ländlichen Regionen über solche mit soziokulturell konservativen Einstellungen bis hin zu solchen mit niedrigem Einkommen - scheinbar unverbundene Segmente der Gesellschaft Wahrnehmungen fehlender Anerkennung teilen - allerdings aus unterschiedlichen Gründen. Zweitens ist, wie erwartet, jedes dieser distinkten Gefühle fehlender Anerkennung mit populistischen Einstellungen assoziiert. Diese Ergebnisse unterstreichen die Relevanz scheinbar unpolitischer, tief in der menschlichen Psyche verwurzelter Faktoren, um gegenwärtige populistische Stimmungslagen zu verstehen. Durch die Integration zuvor auseinanderlaufender Perspektiven auf den Aufstieg des Populismus bietet die Studie eine neue Konzeptualisierung des "Abgehängtseins" und erklärt, wie Populismus - über traditionelle Cleavages hinweg - zu ungewöhnlichen Allianzen führen kann. A prominent but underspecified explanation for the rise of populism points to individuals' feelings of being "left behind" by the development of society. At its core lies the claim that support for populism is driven by the feeling of lacking the societal recognition one deserves. Our contribution builds on the insight that individuals can feel they lack recognition in different ways and for different reasons. We argue that - because of this multifaceted character - the common perception of being neglected by society unites otherwise heterogeneous segments of the population in their support for populism. Relying on data from the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) Pre-Election Cross-Section 2021, our preregistered study investigated the multiple roots of populist attitudes in feelings of lacking societal recognition in two steps. First, our results indicate that, from rural residents to sociocultural conservatives or low-income citizens, seemingly unrelated segments of society harbor feelings of lacking recognition, but for distinct reasons. Second, as anticipated, each of the distinct feelings of lacking recognition are associated with populist attitudes. These findings underscore the relevance of seemingly unpolitical factors that are deeply ingrained in the human psyche for understanding current populist sentiment. Overall, by integrating previously disparate perspectives on the rise of populism, the study offers a novel conceptualization of "feeling left behind" and explains how populism can give rise to unusual alliances that cut across traditional cleavages.

Right-wing populists across many western countries have markedly intensified their references to Christianity in recent years. However, Christian communities’ reactions to such developments often vary significantly, ranging from disproportionate support in some countries to outspoken opposition in others. This paper explores the role of structural factors, and in particular of Church–State relations, in accounting for some of these differences. Specifically, this article explores how Church–State relations in Germany and the United States have produced different incentives and opportunity structures for faith leaders when facing right-wing populism. Based on quantitative studies, survey data, and 31 in-depth elite interviews, this research suggests that whereas Germany’s system of “benevolent neutrality” encourages highly centralised churches whose leaders perceive themselves as integral part and defenders of the current system, and are therefore both willing and able to create social taboos against right-wing populism, America’s “Wall of separation” favours a de-centralised religious marketplace, in which church leaders are more prone to agree with populists’ anti-elitist rhetoric, and face higher costs and barriers against publicly condemning right-wing populism. Taking such structural factors into greater account when analysing Christian responses to right-wing populism is central to understanding current and future dynamics between politics and religion in western democracies.

The European Union was established in order to create a more peaceful European continent through economic and social integration. To date, the EU has been successful; however, new challenges have begun to emerge. In particular, have the EU’s economic policies and German immigration procedures influenced the rise of populism in Germany, as represented by the populist group Alternative für Deutschland (AfD)? This question is answered by evaluating EU economic performance and mobility factors, as well as recent immigration trends in relation to the AfD’s formation and growing popularity. Furthermore, it appears that economic shortcomings and a declining workforce have created a demand for labor in Germany that has not been met by internal EU factors. As a result, over the past several years the German government has attempted to source its labor demand from outside the EU, namely through immigration from the Middle East and North Africa. However, many of the economic advantages often associated with immigration have yet to materialize. Over this same period, the AfD has experienced a significant increase of support within Germany. What is more, analysis indicates that the AfD’s recent success is potentially related to challenges associated with EU economic performance and immigration. This article depicts the global and European context in which populism has become a pivotal political and societal trend capitalizing on the problems of disenchanted groups of people who have generated various forms of discontent against the flows of globalization appearing in the form of deindustrialization, poverty, human mobility, migration, refugees, heterogeneity, diversity, interna-tional trade, tourism and supranational unity (e.g. EU). The main focus of the article will be on the depiction of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) with regard to the ways in which it employs the past as an ideological instrument to appeal to voters in the former provinces of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). Hence, this article will render the ways in which the AfD exploits past, nativism, heritage, culture, Islamophobia, and xenophobia to mobilize the masses. In this regard, it draws a framework to address the public/popular discourses and domi-nant understandings of a homogeneous ‘European heritage’ and the ways in which they are mobi-lized by specific political actors to advance their agendas and to exclude groups such as minorities and Muslim-origin migrants and their descendants from a stronger inclusion into European socie-ty. The chapter will be based on the findings drawn from a comparative study consisting of in-depth interviews conducted with the supporters of right-wing populist parties in Dresden, Toulon, Rome, Athens, Rotterdam and Istanbul in the Spring of 2017, with an acronym CoHERE (Critical Heritages: performing and representing identities in Europe). Based on the speeches of the leading AfD figures as well as these interviews, the chapter will also discuss common tropes in these discourses such as anti-multiculturalism, Islamophobia, EU-skepticism, and different uses of the past and heritage.

Die Analyse zeigt einerseits eine gemeinsame Tendenz, den Islam negativ darzustellen, andereseits auch Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Parteien in bezug auf die Darstellung des Judemtums und/oder Israel sowie der Bedeutung, die dem Christentum für die nationale oder europäische Identität zugemessen wird, die jeweils interessante Parallelen zu den nationalen diskursiven Traditionen und der Geschichte der jeweiligen Partei aufweisen.; This article analyses the image of the three abrahamic religions in the recent political programs of the French Front National (2012 und 2017) in a comparative perspective with other successful populist radical right-wing parties in EU-Countries of continental Western and Northern Europe. It will be shown that even if there is a common tendency of representing Islam negatively and avoiding overt antisemitism, there are differences with regard to Judaism and/or Israel as well as to the weight of Christianity for the national and/or European culture, which have interesting parallels with the national discourse traditions and the particular radical right-wing history of these parties.; Cet article analyse l’image des trois religions abrahamites dans les programmes politiques récents du Front National en la comparant avec celle créée par d’autres partis d’extrême droite populiste de pays de l’Union Européenne appartenant à l’Europe occidentale continentale et à la Scandinavie qui ont été couronnés d’un certain succès lors des élections récentes. Il sera montré que, même si l’on peut constater une convergence quant à l’image négative créée de l’islam ainsi que dans la tendance d’éviter un antisémitisme ouvert, il y a, toutefois, des différences en ce qui concerne le judaïsme et/ou Israël et le poids attribué au christianisme dans la culture nationale et/ou européenne. Wie soll die Zivilgesellschaft mit radikalen Akteuren wie PopulistInnen umgehen? Gilt es, den Dialog mit ihnen zu suchen oder zu vermeiden? Sollte man ihnen zuhoren, sie sprechen lassen und argumentativ zu entlarven versuchen oder ihnen kein Forum bieten und so den Zugang zum gesellschaftlichen Diskurs erschweren? Der vorliegende Artikel will diese Fragen nicht einer normativ fundierten Beantwortung zufuhren, sondern analysiert und systematisiert im offentlichen Diskurs bereits kursierende Antworten. Konkret liegt der Fokus auf Stellungnahmen, die anlasslich der Einladung der AfD-PolitikerInnen Alice Weidel und Marc Jongen an die Oxford Union (2018) bzw. an das Zurcher Theater Gessnerallee und das Hannah-Arendt-Center in New York (beide 2017) vorgebracht wurden. Es erweist sich, dass die Kontroversen einerseits auf demokratietheoretische Grundsatzfragen zuruckfielen und andererseits den konkreten Kontextbedingungen der jeweiligen Events zu wenig Bedeutung schenkten. Abstract: How should civil society deal with radical actors such as populists? Should democrats engage in an open dialogue or avoid the confrontation? Should they listen to them, let them speak and try to expose them argumentatively, or should they deny them any kind of public plattform? Rather than providing a normative answer to these questions, this article analyzes and systematizes responses that are already circulating in public discourse. In particular, we focus on reactions to the invitations of the AfD politicians Alice Weidel and Marc Jongen to the Oxford Union (2018), the Zurich Theater Gessnerallee as well as the Hannah Arendt-Center in New York (both 2017). We will show that the debates gave excessive weight to fundamental questions of democratic theory while marginalizing the specific context factors of the events. Because of this, the populists eventually gained the moral victory.

Die Alternative für Deutschland gilt als populistische Partei und konnte seit ihrer Gründungim Jahr 2013 einige Wahlerfolge erzielen. Diese Entwicklungen werden als problematisch angesehen, da die AfD zum Teil rechtspopulistische Ideologien vertritt, die in der Umsetzungeinem demokratischen System schaden können. Doch was macht die AfD so erfolgreich? Indizien,welche populistischen Charakteristika und Inhalte Wählerinnen und Wähler ansprechen und somit mobilisieren, können in der Facebook-Kommunikation der AfD herauskristallisiert werden. Die Analyse der Facebook-Posts hat ergeben, dass das User-Engagement von Sachsen-Anhalt während der Landtagswahl 2016 im Gegensatz zu Bayern während der Landtagswahl 2018 sehr hoch war. Gerade auch Posts, die direkt zur Wahl aufforderten,stießen in Sachsen-Anhalt auf eine deutlich höhere Resonanz. Dies spiegelt sich in den Wahlergebnissenwider. 2016 verzeichnete die AfD in Sachsen-Anhalt einen Stimmenanteil von 24,3 Prozent. Zwei Jahre später in Bayern erhielt sie 10,2 Prozent der Stimmen. Das erhöhte User-Engagement kann als Indikator für eine erhöhte Wahlbereitschaft der Nicht-Wählerinnen und -Wähler gelten. Die Regression zeigt zudem, dass emotionalisierte Beiträge eine höhere Reaktion der Nutzerinnen und Nutzer hervorheben als unemotionalisierte Beiträge. In Bezug auf demagogische Beiträge lässt sich eine Tendenz erkennen. Demnach werden nichtdemagogischePosts häufiger geliked, kommentiert oder geteilt als demagogische Posts. The “Alternative for Germany” is regarded as a populist party and has achieved some electoral success since its founding in 2013. These developments are seen as problematic, as the AfD partly represents right-wing populist ideologies that can harm a democratic system. But what makes the AfD successful? As an indicator for the general appeal of the party the content and communication strategies of the AfD on the Facebook were analyzed. The analysis of the Facebook posts has shown that the user engagement of “Sachsen-Anhalt” during the 2016 state election was very high compared to “Bayern” during the 2018 state election. This is reflected in the election results. In 2016, the AfD in Sachsen-Anhalt recorded votes of 24.3 percent. Two years later in Bayern, they received 10.2 percent of the vote. A linear regression model, that considers all the factors analyzed shows, that emotional communication creates more user-interaction in terms of likes, comments and shares. Posts with demagogic content on the other side are less likely to have a high user-engagement. Facebook-follower of the “AfD Sachsen-Anhalt” account strongly interact with “election appeals”. This might be indicator for the partys big success in mobilizing non-voters during their 2016 election run. (VLID)3860285

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie mechanizmu kreowania wizerunku niemieckiej partii prawicowo-populistycznej Alternatywa dla Niemiec (Alternative für Deutschland, AfD) w polskiej przestrzeni medialnej z uwzględnieniem światopoglądowego zróżnicowania ośrodków medialnych. Głównymi metodami badawczymi, które posłużyły do przeprowadzenia badań, były: analiza zawartości mediów oraz metoda komparatystyczna, natomiast materiałem empirycznym wykorzystanym do przeprowadzenia analizy były wybrane artykuły z serwisów polskich tygodników opinii. Analizie poddano tym samym przekazy medialne dotyczące ideologii, programu i aktywności liderów partii, która stała się przedmiotem wielu debat, odnosząc sukcesy wyborcze zarówno na krajowej, jak i unijnej scenie politycznej. Media były głównym narzędziem budowania wizerunku partii za granicą. Praca opiera się na założeniu, zgodnie z którym ośrodki medialne w Polsce poprzez wykorzystywanie strategii gatekeeping kreują w okresach kampanii wyborczych przeważnie negatywny wizerunek AfD i radykalizują jej profil ideowo-programowy. The purpose of this article is to present the mechanism of image creation of a German right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany (Alternative für Deutschland, AfD) in the Polish media space, taking into account the world-wide diversity of media centers. The main research methods that were used to conduct the research were: media content analysis and comparative method, while the empirical material used for the analysis were selected articles from the polish opinion weeklies websites. Thus, the media coverage of the ideology, program and activity of party leaders has been analyzed, which has become the subject of many debates, including electoral successes both on the domestic and EU political scene. The media were the main tool for building the image of the party abroad. The work is based on the assumption that media centers in Poland, through the use of the gatekeeping strategy, create during the electoral campaigns created a generally negative image of AfD and radicalized its.

This paper investigates the effect of the refugee crisis, and the related government's asylum policy, on concerns about immigration of the German population. Exploiting exogenous variation in survey interview timing of the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), I employ a difference-in-differences strategy to estimate the short-term causal effect of the refugee crisis on concerns about immigration. The estimated effect is substantial, representing an increase in concerns of around 22%, compared to the pre-refugee crisis baseline level. Interestingly, I find that this increase was twice as large for East Germans, compared to West Germans. In a second section, I show concerns about immigration are positively correlated with political support for the relatively new, right-wing populist party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). However, using the variability in concerns generated by the refugee crisis, I find no evidence of a causal effect of concerns on political preferences in the short term.

Die Partei "Alternative für Deutschland" (AfD) erzielt ihre Wahlerfolge mittels eines rechtspopulistischen Kulturkampfes gegen gesellschaftliche Toleranz und multikulturelle Vielfalt und hat sich damit mittlerweile zu einem neuen parteipolitischen Dach einer erstarkten, völkisch-nationalistischen Bewegung entwickelt. Zugleich versucht die AfD durch die Inanspruchnahme von rechten Schlagworten wie der "Verteidigung des Abendlandes" in kirchlichen Kreisen an Einfluss zu gewinnen und mit anti-muslimischen Rassismus bestehende Vorurteile gegen den Islam für parteipolitische Zwecke zu instrumentalisieren. Was geschieht, wenn das bislang unhinterfragt Gültige nicht mehr selbstverständlich ist? Was geschieht, wenn niemand mehr über offensichtliche Dummheiten oder Peinlichkeiten, über schlechten Geschmack und intolerierbares Verhalten lacht?
