The silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) is a widely distributed and economically important marine fish in the Indo-Pacific. In this study, we acquired the second generation of wild P. argenteus by artificial breeding and further studied the testicular development and ultrastructure of spermatogenesis. The results of gonadosomatic index (GSI) showed the spawning period of this marine fish was from April to June. Besides, through morphological analysis, we found that P. argenteus had an anastomosing tubular testis surrounded by a layer of tunica albuginea, in which spermatogenesis occurred in cysts where the synchronous germ cells were completely surrounded by the cytoplasmic projection of Sertoli cells. Meanwhile, based on submicroscopic characteristics, the germ cells are classified into nine different types. During the ontogenesis of testis, both the early stage of spermatogenesis and sperm were observed in P. argenteus. At sperm maturation stage, different types of spermatozoa and activation of sperms occurred non-synchronously in the tubules. Cytoplasmic bridges also were observed among synchronous germ cells within the cysts, suggesting an interrelated and differentiated relationship among these germ cells.

During last several years, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), Kuwait has been trying to develop a sustainable culture technique for silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus). This paper reports the recent research advances in the breeding and rearing of silver pomfret fry at KISR. The eggs collected from wild silver pomfret during spawning seasons of 2012 to 2015 were artificially fertilized under laboratory condition. The average hatching rates of artificially fertilized eggs collected from wild silver pomfrets were 25.6%, 44.8%, 76.7%, and 53.5.0% and average survival rates of metamorphosed fry produced from these eggs were 3.7%, 5.7%, 4.4% and 3.8% for the spawning seasons 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, respectively. For captive brood stocks, observation on the spawning time at hourly interval by collecting eggs from the nets set at out-flow of brood tanks showed that the spawning time for captive silver pomfret starts at the time of sunset. In 2012, two groups of captive silver pomfret broods spawned a total of 62x103 and 66x103 eggs, but the eggs were unfertilized. No captive spawning occurred during 2013 and 2014 spawning season. In 2015, captive silver pomfret broods in three tanks spawned about 653x103, 673x103 and 270x103 eggs, and in 2016, the broods in four tanks spawned about 669x103, 22x103, 3x103 and 366x103 eggs. However, from these eggs only 1,400 and 1,000 fertilized eggs were collected which produced 300 and 123 hatched larvae in July 2015 and June 2016, respectively. The larvae produced from the 2015 broods did not survive beyond 56 days of metamorphosed stage while larvae produced from 2016 captive broods survived for 9 days only. The mortality of the larvae from captive brood could be related to the poor egg or milt quality. However, efforts are continued to improve the eggs and sperm quality through proper brood management.

Megacolax gen. nov. (Copepoda, Cyclopoida, Bomolochidae) is established to accommodate Naricolax insolitus Ho & Lin, 2003, and next Megacolax insolitus (Ho & Lin, 2003) emended is redescribed based on specimens of both sexes recovered from the nasal cavity of the original host, Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788) (Pisces, Stromateidae) in Japan. The male is described for the first time for the species.

The purpose of this research was to determine the most selective mesh size of gillnet fishing gear for Pampus argenteus in coastal waters of Pangandaran Regency, West Java. Research on the selectivity of gillnet fishing gear was carried out in the coastal waters of Pangandaran, West Java Province, from August 2018 to January 2019. The method used in this research is experimental fishing, namely operating gillnet fishing gear directly in the fishing area with fishermen. The primary data collected was the measurement of the catch (fish weight, number, fork length, how the fish was caught, circumference (girth opercullum, maximum body girth). Meanwhile, the secondary data collected were supporting data from the Pangandaran District Fisheries and Marine Service, and literature study. In determining the sampling, the method used is the purposive sampling method. The operation of gillnets using 4.5 inches obtained a higher proportion of main catch (75%) than gillnets with a mesh size of 5 inches (44%). Gillnet with a mesh size of 4.5 inches, the silver pomfret caught was distributed between 17-22 cm in size with the highest mode in the 19 cm fork length. Unlike the gillnet fishing gear with a mesh size of 5 inches, the silver pomfret caught was distributed in the fork length range of 17-25 cm with the highest mode in the length class 19 cm fork length. mesh size 4.5 inches has a hanging ratio value of 0.51. Meanwhile, the 5 inch mesh size has a hanging ratio value of 0.54. Based on the length distribution, gillnets with a mesh size of 5 inches were more dominant in catching silver pomfret in a larger size class interval than gillnets with a mesh size of 4,5 inches. Based on the L50 value, both selective gillnets caught more fish at 50% second chance. The selectivity curve shows that gillnet fishing gear with a mesh size of 5 inches has more selective results than gillnets with a mesh size of 4.5 inches.

The contamination of fish type products such as silver pomfret fish fillets by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has raised global health concerns. Related studies regarding the concentration of PTEs in fillets of silver pomfret fish were retrieved among some international databases such as Scopus, PubMed and Embase between 1 January 1983 and 10 March 2020. The pooled (mean) concentration of PTEs in fillets of silver pomfret fish was meta-analyzed with the aid of a random-effect model (REM). Also, the non-carcinogenic risk was estimated via calculating the 95th percentile of the total target hazard quotient (TTHQ). The meta-analysis of 21 articles (containing 25 studies or data reports) indicated that the ranking of PTEs in fillets of silver pomfret fish was Fe (11,414.81 µg/kg wet weight, ww) > Zn (6055.72 µg/kg ww) > Cr (1825.79 µg/kg ww) > Pb (1486.44 µg/kg ww) > Se (1053.47 µg/kg ww) > Cd (992.50 µg/kg ww) > Ni (745.23 µg/kg ww) > Cu (669.71 µg/kg ww) > total As (408.24 µg/kg ww) > Co (87.03 µg/kg ww) > methyl Hg (46.58 µg/kg ww). The rank order of health risk assessment by country based on the TTHQ for adult consumers was Malaysia (2.500) > Bangladesh (0.886) > Iran (0.144) > China (0.045) > Pakistan (0.020) > India (0.015), while the corresponding values for child consumers was Malaysia (11.790) > Bangladesh (4.146) > Iran (0.675) > China (0.206) > Pakistan (0.096) > India (0.077). The adult consumers in Malaysia and children in Malaysia and Bangladesh were at considerable non-carcinogenic risk. Therefore, following the recommended control plans in order to reduce the health risk associated with the ingestion of PTEs via consumption of silver pomfret fish fillets is crucial.

The silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) is one of the most commercially important marine fish species in the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean. However, detailed information on the reproductive biology of silver pomfret is limited for the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. To understand their reproductive biology, especially the gonadal developmental cycle and spawning season, a total of 373 individuals were collected monthly from February 2016 to January 2018 and examined. The total length (TL) and weight (TW) of P. argenteus ranged from 18.82–35.73 cm and 89.26–617.60 g, respectively. The highest gonadosomatic index (GSI) values were observed from April–June with a second (smaller) peak in October. The highest oocyte diameter was observed in May (630.50 ± 96.70 μm), when the fish reached full maturity, and the lowest was observed in July (35.10 ± 7.12 μm), when new eggs began their development for the next spawning season. The maximum number of eggs in the ovary were found in the yolk granule stage in May with a number of post-ovulatory follicles, which indicated that the ovaries developed to a peak leading up to the spawning season. A number of spermatids were also seen in males in April–June along with females. From these detailed observations, it may be concluded that P. argenteus shows two spawning peaks, in May–June and October. This observation will be helpful for the artificial breeding, sustainable management and conservation of this species in the study area.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play important roles in the innate system by recognizing pathogen-associated molecular patterns derived from various microbes. In this study, we reported the cloning and identification of paTLR3 and paTLR4 interactor with leucine rich repeats (TRIL) cDNA from silvery pomfret (Pampus argenteus). The full-length paTLR3 and paTRIL cDNA were 2996 and 3163 bp long, respectively. Both of the two proteins contained many LRR domains, one LRR-C terminal domain and one transmembrane region, which fits with the characteristic TLR and its analogue domain architecture. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that paTLR3 and paTRIL shared the closest relationship with Lateolabrax japonicas and Notothenia coriiceps, respectively. The expression levels of paTLR3 and paTRIL varied greatly among the examined tissues with the highest expression both in liver. Following exposure to V. anguillarum flagellin, A. hydrophila lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and L. plantarum lipoteichoic acid (LTA), paTLR3 and paTRIL were all up-regulated. V. anguillarum flagellin induced the highest expression levels of paTLR3 and paTRIL. A. hydrophila flagellin and A. hydrophila LPS induced the highest expression levels of IL-1β and IL-8, respectively. The present results will provide the valuable information for understanding the structure, function and the immune defense process of paTLR3 and paTRIL in silvery pomfret.

The effects of different processing methods (Frying cooking, brining and boiling) on the proximate composition of fish species (Pampus argenteus) were investigated. The objective of this work is to know the best processing methods, the effect of processing on nutritional values of fish products. The result of the proximate composition of the fish species showed that the highest protein content (38.17%) was in P. argenteus processed with the frying process. The result of moisture content indicated that boiled samples were consistently the least (25.20%) while for fried sample had the highest moisture percentage. The lipid was reduced to the least value of 9.94% in the brined fish. In cooking, the important factors for consideration are moisture, lipids, and protein, though low moisture would ensure a fish product with extended shelf life. To have a longer shelf life, high protein is desirable, a low lipid is equally desirable as to reduce oxidation and rancidity in the samples which causes off-flavor and bad taste in fish products. In conclusion, all the processing methods are good and could extend the shelf life of the products with an exception of boiling method; they could keep the fish fillet free from spoilage and microorganisms attack for some period. This study showed that the proximate values obtained could be of help in choosing fish based on nutritional values.

Amyloodinium ocellatum (AO) infection in silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) causes extensive mortality. Insufficient information exists on the molecular immune response of silver pomfret to AO infestation, so herein we simulated the process of silver pomfret being infected by AO. Translucent trophosomes were observed on the gills of AO-infected fish. Transcriptome profiling was performed to investigate the effects of AO infection on the gill, kidney complex and spleen. Overall, 404,412,298 clean reads were obtained, assembling into 96,341 unigenes, which were annotated against public databases. In total, 2730 differentially expressed genes were detected, and few energy- and immune-related genes were further assessed using RT-qPCR. Moreover, activities of three immune-related (SOD, AKP and ACP) and three energy-related (PKM, LDH and GCK) enzymes were determined. AO infection activated the immune system and increased interleukin-1 beta and immunoglobulin M heavy chain levels. Besides, the PPAR signalling pathway was highly enriched, which played a role in improving immunity and maintaining homeostasis. AO infection also caused dyspnoea, leading to extensive lactic acid accumulation, potentially contributing towards a strong immune response in the host. Our data improved our understanding regarding the immune response mechanisms through which fish coped with parasitic infections and may help prevent high fish mortality in aquaculture.

White pomfret (Pampus argenteus) is one of the economically important fish and includes the leading commodity in Pangandaran Waters. Information on fishing biology of those species were still limited. The purpose of this study is to determine stock estimates including length-weight relationship, age group, growth, mortality and exploitation rate of white pomfret. Monthly length-frequency data have been collected from November 2018 to August 2019 at Cikidang fish auction. Fish length-frequency distribution was separated into a normal distribution using the Bhattacharya method with software of FiSAT (FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Tools). Estimation of population parameters used analytical model application with ELEFAN-1 (Electronic Length Frequency Analysis) program. The results showed that lengths distribution of white pomfret ranged between 19.3 cm - 36.8 cmTL. Length-weight relations was negatively allometric (W = 0,1184L2,3719). Growth equation of white pomfret is Lt = 53.04 (1-e-0.26(t)). Natural mortality (M) was 0.60/year, fishing mortality (F) was 3.04/year and total mortality (Z) was 3.64/ year. The exploitation rate (E) was 0.84. It is mean that higher than optimal exploitation so that the white pomfret fish population in a state of overfished. It is necessary to better policy in the management of white pomfret through precaution approach and describing of biological and fishing aspect in Pangandaran Waters.

Gillnet is a wall of netting that hangs in the water column, typically made of monofilament or multifilament nylon, had the same size and usually used by fisherman in Pangandaran. This research aims to see the capture process of white pomfret (Pampus argenteus) on gillnet in Pangandaran Regency. This research was conducted in August 2018 and January 2019 in Pangandaran. The data used in this research are primary data consisting of the proportion of catches and capture process, whereas secondary data obtained from Dinas Perikanan Pangandaran. The results of this research show that the quantity and weight proportion of main catch > bycatch and captured process of white pomfret dominated by wedged by 94% and the lowest is gilled by 6%.

A cell line (PaF) derived from the fin tissue of silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) was established and characterized in this study. The cell line has been subcultured for more than 50 times in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) containing 15% foetal bovine serum (FBS) since the initial primary culture. PaF cells grew well at temperatures from 24°C to 28°C in DMEM supplemented with 15% FBS. Partial amplification and sequence analysis of the cytochrome B gene indicated that PaF originated from silver pomfret. Cytogenetic analysis demonstrated that the modal chromosome number was 48. A significant cytopathic effect was observed in PaF cells during viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) infection, and the VHSV replication was confirmed by qRT-PCR and viral titre assays. In contrast, PaF cells were resistant to red-spotted grouper nervous necrosis virus infection. Moreover, PaF cells could respond to VHSV and lipopolysaccharide treatments, as indicated by the expression of immune-related genes, TLR5 and TLR9. In conclusion, the establishment of PaF cell line will provide an appropriate in vitro tool for the study of mechanisms of pathogen-silver pomfret interaction.

Pomfret, which are widely distributed throughout the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, are economically important fish species. As their similar external morphological characteristics can inhibit proper species identification, numerous errors exist in the morphological characterization and DNA barcoding data of pomfret. In this study, we extensively sampled pomfret from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Using the sampled specimens, in combination with morphological assessments, DNA barcoding, and corrected sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene in GenBank, we attempted to resolve the classification issues surrounding this group. We identified seven valid species in the genus Pampus, of which all seven are distributed in the western Pacific and three are distributed in the Indian Ocean. Pampus argenteus, Pampus cinereus, and Pampus sp. were identified as three valid species with relatively close genetic distances and sharing a common ancestor. Significant variation between Pampus chinensis specimens from the Arabian Sea and the northwestern Pacific suggest a possible species complex. Finally, we provide an identification key to facilitate the identification of pomfret based on the major diagnostic morphological characteristics of six Pampus species collected along the western Pacific coast. On the basis of the reports on the new record of “Pampus argenteus,” we found that the Lessepsian migration of pomfret was likely, with species from the Indian and Pacific Oceans spreading through the Mediterranean Sea into the waters of the eastern Atlantic. Further study is required to clarify the validity of the newly recorded “Pampus argenteus.”

PFAAs have emerged as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in a variety of environmental matrixes and biota, posing potential hazards for wildlife and humans. Diet has been considered as an important source for human exposure to PFAAs and seafood accounts for a relatively large proportion in human diets, especially for coastal residents. In an effort to clarify the impact of PFAAs in seafood on human health, 17 PFAAs were determined in 42 pooled seafood samples (14 species) from the Yellow Sea areas, China. The concentrations of total PFAAs (sum of 17 PFAAs, ∑PFAAs) were in the range of 1.10–1067 ng/g dry weight (dw), with the highest concentration found in swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) and the lowest in silvery pomfret (Pampus argenteus). Concentrations and composition profiles of PFAAs varied significantly among different species, suggesting that bioaccumulation potential of PFAAs differed from species to species. The distinct spatial distribution of PFAAs in four categories of seafood could be mainly attributed to the contamination patterns of PFAAs in three nearby cities. PFBA was presented as the most abundant PFAA in this study, which was different from the findings in many other studies where PFOS was the predominant compound. Furthermore, the human health risk assessment suggested that a comprehensive action plan is needed to protect people from high exposure to PFAAs through seafood consumption.

Formaldehyde can effectively control ectoparasites in silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus). However, there is limited information on the effects of formaldehyde treatment at a molecular level in fishes. In the present study, transcriptome profiling was conducted to investigate the effects of formaldehyde treatment (80 mg/L, bath for 1 h every day for three consecutive days) on the liver and kidney tissues of silver pomfret. A total of 617959982 clean reads were obtained and assembled into 265760 unigenes with an N50 length of 1507 bp, and the assembled unigenes were all annotated by alignment with public databases. A total of 2204 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected in the liver and kidney tissues, and they included 7 detoxification- related genes and 9 immune-related genes, such as CYP450, GST, MHC I & II, and CCR. In addition, 1440 DEGs were mapped to terms in the GO database, and 1064 DEGs were mapped to the KEGG database. The expression of 4 detoxification-related genes and 6 immune-related genes in three days formaldehyde treatment were analyzed using RT-qPCR, and the antioxidant enzyme levels were also determined. The results indicate differential expression of detoxification- and immune-related genes during the three days formaldehyde treatment. Our data could provide a reference for the treatment of parasites to avoid high mortality and help in understanding the molecular activity in fishes after formaldehyde exposure.

Effects of high hydrostatic pressure‐assisted thawing (HPAT, 100, 150, and 200 MPa) on the physicochemical characteristics of silver pomfret were evaluated in comparison with conventional (water immersion thawing, WIT) thawed samples. HPAT significantly decreased the thawing time, as well as the cooking and total losses. The maximum water holding capacity was observed at 100 MPa. Color changed obviously at ≥150 MPa, resulting in a cooked appearance. Samples thawed with HPAT showed better texture quality and lower lipid oxidation. The levels of myofibrillar protein oxidation and surface hydrophobicity increased, while Ca2+‐ATPase activities decreased as the pressure increased. The oxidation of myofibrillar protein was significantly decreased at 100 MPa; total sulfhydryl content was 30.85% higher than that of WIT. Overall, 100 MPa is the optimum treatment condition for silver pomfret thawing without negative effects on quality of the product. HPAT can be a potential alternative to produce high‐quality thawed fish.

Many fish species are known to feed on jellyfish. Herein, we observed the effects of jellyfish feeding on silver pomfret using gas chromatography tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF–MS) based on metabolomics. We studied the effects of feeding on jellyfish on skin and serum immune of silver pomfret. Healthy silver pomfret (initial weight, 13.40 ± 1.565 g) was divided into two groups: control and feeding. The pomfrets were fed jellyfish at 2, 6, 12, 24, and 72 h, and samples were obtained. Statistical analysis revealed that after jellyfish feeding, most serum immune indicators did not show a significant change; however, skin immune indicators indicated that silver pomfret elicit a stress response on encountering jellyfish, gradually adapting to their presence. We therefore conducted further experiments involving two groups: group A, which was not fed any extra jellyfish, and group B, which was fed extra jellyfish (approximately 10% weight of silver pomfret) every day for 60 days. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis led to the identification of stronger biomarkers, with the liver metabolome showing obvious variations between the groups (group B vs. A). After feeding jellyfish by silver pomfret, some amino acids, amines, and unsaturated fatty acids in the liver tissue showed a significant increase. Our results, thus, not only reveal changes in physiological indices of silver pomfret after feeding on jellyfish but also provide a new idea for further optimizing the feed formula for silver pomfret culture.

Growth, mortality and exploitation rate of Pampus argenteus, Parastromateus niger and Scomberomorus commerson in Sebatik Waters, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 5363-5372. The economic revenue of the local government of the Indonesian Sebatik Island relies much on the exploitation of its rich marine biodiversity. One of the important economic activities is the capture fisheries of commercially important fishes such as the white pomfret (Pampus argenteus) and black pomfret (Parastromateus niger), and mackerel fish (Scomberomorus commerson). The current study aims to estimate the growth, condition factor, and exploitation rate of the fish species for developing sustainable fishery management. Fish samplings were conducted in the Sebatik Waters, Nunukan District, North Kalimantan Province, Indonesia from June to July 2020. The fish were caught using gillnet at daytime (pomfrets) and nighttime (mackerel), respectively. Then, 82, 73, and 83 specimens of white pomfret, black pomfret, and mackerel were randomly selected for the length-weight relationship, condition factor, and exploitation rate analysis, respectively. The results revealed that the size distribution of the white pomfret population in the coastal waters of Sebatik Island ranged from 220.0 to 351.0 mm, black pomfret ranged from 231.0 to 362.0 mm and mackerel, ranged from 242.0 to 432.0 mm. All the fish species exhibited negative allometric (b50%) and fishing mortality (>60%) of all the fish species analyzed in this study indicate that there is a sign of overfishing to these fish resources in the coastal waters of Sebatik island. Hence, sustainable fishing management is timely needed to prevent depletion of these important fishery resources. Such management can include fishing restrictions for small-sized and first mature fish, close fishing season, and strict requirement for fishing permits.

Fish is a food that is consumed by many people because fish contain high nutrition. Fillet products are diversification of fishery products that are quite popular with the community. That is because fillet products are easy to consume and have good nutritional content. However, fish fillet products are easily degraded during transportation. So that triggers traders to use hazardous materials in the form of formalin to increase the shelf life of fillet products. The shelf life of fish fillet products needs to be improved in order to obtain good quality and not be easily damaged by storing fillets at low temperatures and the addition of active ingredients in the form of honey. Honey also has antimicrobial properties so that it can be used as a food preservative. Honey can inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause decay. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding honey with different concentrations on the shelf life of white pomfret (Pampus argenteus) fillets at cold temperatures. This research was experimental by making honey solutions with different concentrations (0%: 10%; 11%). This research uses a completely randomized design (CRD). The shelf life test is done by calculating the value of TPC, Protein, pH, Tvbn, and organoleptic. TPC, Protein, pH, TVBN, and organoleptic test results showed that the addition of honey with different concentrations had a significant effect on the shelf life of white pomfret fish fillets. The best concentration of adding honey is at a concentration of 5%. While the shelf life that can be accepted by consumers can reach 6 days shelf life. The results showed that honey can be used as an alternative preservative in fish fillet meat that functions as an antimicrobial and fat oxidation prevention.

Short Communication: Growth and mortality rate of Black Pomfret Parastromateus niger (Bloch, 1795) and Silver Pomfret Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788) in Paloh Waters, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 19: 2247-2251. Three species of pomfret fish were caught in Paloh waters including Parastromateus niger, Pampus argenteus, and Pampus chinensis. P. niger and P. argenteus which were more dominant than P. Chinensis. Pomfret fishing in the Paloh waters is not carried out throughout the year, but generally only in August to October every year. The main fishing gear used was drift gill net. Data on the growth parameter and mortality of the pomfret fish is required as an effort for the management of this fish. This study was aimed to estimate the growth and mortality rate of P. niger and P. argenteus in Paloh waters, located in West Kalimantan. This study was conducted from April 2014 to June 2017. The fish samples were collected by catching the fish using drift gill net used by the fishing vessels. The data were analyzed using an analytic model and run using ELEFAN 1 software and Length-converted Catch Curve on FISAT II software. The result showed that von Bertalanffy growth parameters covering growth curvature (k), asymptotic length (L∞), and the age of fish in length zero (t0) was 0.26 year-1, 46.2 cm TL and -1.85 years for P. niger and 0.53 year-1, 46.2 cm TL and -0.88 years for P. argenteus. The von Bertalanffy growth function for P. niger as Lt = 46.2[1-e-0.26 (t+1.85)] and for P. argenteus as Lt = 46.2[1-e-0.53 (t+0.88)]. These functions described the expected or average length at a time (age). Total mortality rate (Z), natural mortality rate (M) and fishing mortality (F) were 0.93 year-1, 0.29 year-1 and 0.64 year-1 for P. niger and 1.68 year-1, 0.47 year-1 and 1.21 year-1 for P. argenteus. Exploitation rate (E) was 0.68 year-1 for P. niger and 0.72 year-1 for P. argenteus. The growth of P. niger is slower than the growth of P. argenteus and the fishing mortality of P. argenteus is higher than P. niger’s. Both of the exploitation rates indicated that the fish resources are over-exploited.

In the summer of 2015, a disease outbreak occurred in the Silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) that reared in indoor tanks of one farm in Eastern China. The primary external sign of affected fish was hemorrhages in fins. In the present study, Gram-negative rods were found in internal organs of diseased fish, and bacterial isolates obtained were identified as Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae based on phenotypic and genetic analysis. Pathogenicity of one representative P. damselae subsp. damselae isolate was confirmed with experimental infections using healthy silver pomfret. This bacterial isolate also exhibited high cytotoxicity to against a marine finfish kidney cell line. In summary, P. damselae subsp. damselae was the causative agent of the disease outbreak of 2015 in aquacultured sliver pomfret.

This study investigated the physical (L*, a*, b*, texture profile analyses, pH), chemical (TVB-N, K value and TBA), microbiological, amino acid content, and flavor effects that Gingko biloba leaf extract (GBLE) had on silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) stored at 4 ± 1 °C in ice for 18 days. Fresh pomfret samples were obtained directly from the local fish market and transported to the laboratory with ice immediately. After being gutted, washed, filleted and trimmed in a water-ice mixture, samples were treated with different concentrations of GBLE (0.0 mg/mL, 2.5 mg/mL, 5.0 mg/mL, 10.0 mg/mL) and packaged in Polyethylene bag, then stored in a refrigerator at 4 ± 1 °C with ice. The results show that the shelf-life of untreated (0.0 mg/mL) pomfret samples was 8–9 days compared to 14–15 days for the GBLE1 (2.5 mg/mL) treated group. The assessment results showed that different concentrations of GBLE had variable effects on preserving the texture parameters of acceptability limit, inhibit lipid oxidation, protein degradation, and microorganism growth. 2.5 mg/mL of GBLE was the best for the preservation of pomfret during storage in ice. Therefore, there is potential use for GBLE as a preservative to extend the shelf-life of pomfret during chilled storage in ice.

For many years, jellyfish were described as 'dead ends' in marine food webs, due to their high-water content and low nutritional value. However, it has been confirmed that silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) has a particular preference for preying on jellyfish. In this study, we determined the effect of consuming jellyfish on the intestinal microbes of silver pomfret. Analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicons showed that jellyfish had a dramatic impact on the composition of the gut microbiota. The content of Proteobacteria was reduced from 99% to 51%, while Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria increased, accounting for 35%, 9% and 2% of the total flora, respectively. At the genus level, the content of Photobacterium decreased sharply to1% of the total flora. By contrast, Lactobacillus, Burkholderia and Sphingomonas increased to 12%, 9% and 7% of the total flora, respectively. After feeding jellyfish, the functions of intestinal microbes and the activity of digestive enzymes also changed, resulting in better digestion and absorption of jellyfish. The results provide insights into the specific bacterial taxa within the silver pomfret intestinal microbiome that are impacted by jellyfish. Silver pomfret can better digest and absorb jellyfish by adjusting the intestinal microbial composition. The findings provide a theoretical basis for the digestive mechanism by which silver pomfret consume jellyfish.

Pomfrets (Genus Pampus) are commercially important fishes in the Indo Pacific region. The systematics of this genus is complicated due to morphological similarities between species. The silver pomfret from Indian waters has long been considered to be Pampus argenteus. The objective of the study was to utilize the mitochondrial COI gene to establish the molecular identity of the silver pomfret distributed in Indian waters and to resolve the phylogenetic relationships among Pampus species in the world based on sequence data in the NCBI database. Seven valid Pampus species are identified in this study. The mean genetic divergence value calculated between clades representing these species was 7.9%. The mean genetic distance between the so-called Pampus argenteus from Indian waters and sequences attributed to P. argenteus from the South China Sea, where the neotype of this species was collected, was found to be greater than 12%, strongly supporting the likelihood of the Indian species being distinct. The Indian Pampus species show very close affinity to P. cinereus, with inter species differences less than 2%. The taxonomic identity of the silver pomfret in India is also discussed here, in light of molecular and morphological evidence.

Parsa M, Mahmoudi Khoshdarehgi M, Nekuro A, Pouladi M. 2017. Population dynamics parameters of Silver Pomfret Pampus argenteus in Iranian waters of the northern Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Biodiversitas 18: 633-638. This research represents population dynamics parameters of Pampus argenteus including age, growth and mortality parameters in Iranian waters of the northern Persian Gulf and Oman Sea using length-frequency data. Fork length and total weight data collecting of P. argenteus were conducted from April 2014 to March 2015. A total of 1919 specimen were collected ranging from 10 to 32 cm fork length and 35 to 1075 g total weight. The mean length and weight were recorded to be 19.97±0.12 cm and 272.04±7.43 g, respectively. The relationship between fork length and total weight was determined as W = 0.0231FL3.141 (R2=0.9932, n= 643) and indicated that P. argenteus grew allometrically in the study region. The Von Bertalanffy growth function estimates were obtained as: L∞ = 32.55 cm, K = 0.3 year-1, t0=-0.54 years and ϕ′= 2.5. The infinite weight of P. argenteus was estimated as 1301.77 g. The annual instantaneous rate of total mortality (Z) was 1.55 year-1, the natural mortality (M) was 0.75 year-1 and the fishing mortality (F) was 0.78 year-1. Furthermore, the exploitation rate (E) was calculated as 0.51. Results of the obtained exploitation rate showed that P. argenteus was fully exploited in the study region.

Three species of Opisthomonorcheides Parukhin, 1966 are reported for the first time from Indonesian waters: O. pampi (Wang, 1982) Liu, Peng, Gao, Fu, Wu, Lu, Gao & Xiao, 2010 and O. ovacutus (Mamaev, 1970) Machida, 2011 from Parastromateus niger (Bloch), and O. decapteri Parukhin, 1966 from Atule mate (Cuvier). Both O. pampi and O. ovacutus can now be considered widespread in the Indo-Pacific region, with earlier records of these species being from Fujian Province, China and Penang, Malaysia, respectively. We redescribe O. decapteri from one of its original hosts, Atule mate, off New Caledonia, and report this species from Jakarta Bay, Indonesia, extending its range throughout the Indian Ocean into the south-western Pacific. All three species possess a genital atrium that is long, sometimes very long, and a genital pore that is located in the forebody. This validates the interpretation that the original description was erroneous in reporting the genital pore in the hindbody, well posterior to the ventral sucker. These observations verify the synonymy of Retractomonorchis Madhavi, 1977 with Opisthomonorcheides. A major discrepancy between the species of Opisthomonorcheides is that some are described with the uterus entering the terminal organ laterally and some with it entering terminally; this feature needs further analysis. Based on the length of the genital atrium and the posterior extent of the vitellarium, the 27 species of Opisthomonorcheides considered valid can be divided into four groups. Among the 53 host records analysed, the families Carangidae (53% of records), Stromateidae (17%) and Serranidae (5.7%) are the most common; the reports are overwhelmingly from members of the Perciformes (91%), with further records in the Clupeiformes (5.7%), Gadiformes (1.9%) and Pleuronectiformes (1.9%). Two fish genera (Parastromateus Bleeker and Pampus Bonaparte) dominate the recorded hosts, with the black pomfret Parastromateus niger harbouring six species, the silver pomfret Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen) harbouring six, and the Chinese silver pomfret P. chinensis (Euphrasen) two. A host-parasite checklist is presented. We discuss the host-specificity of members of the genus, questioning some records such as that of O. decapteri in a deep-sea macrourid. We also comment on the morphological similarity, but phylogenetic distance, between the various Pomfret species, advancing the possibility that a series of host misidentifications has occurred. Sequences of the ITS2 rDNA gene generated for O. pampi and O. ovacutus are briefly discussed and molecular data are lodged in the GenBank database.

Investigations were carried out for evaluating the design and selectivity of Pampus argenteus gillnets used along the Satpati coast. Satpati, an important marine fish landing centre of Maharashtra, India has the maximum Silver pomfret, P. argenteus landing by mechanized gillnetters. Among the maritime states, maximum landing of pomfret was recorded from Gujarat and Maharashtra in the northwest coast. They are highly relished table fishes in domestic and export markets and command high unit value. In India, the species is available in all the coastal states. Gillnet selectivity plays an important role in fish resource management and helps in maintaining sustainability of the stock. The gillnetters used for pomfret fishing in Satpati carried only one net per vessel and the total fleet length ranged from 10620 m to 11400 m. Gillnets are operated as column and bottom drift and depth of operation ranged from 35 m to 50 m. Gillnets made of Polyamide (PA) monofilament of diameter 0.23 mm to 0.28 mm and mesh size that ranged from 110 mm to 130 mm are commonly used. They are rigged with hanging coefficient between 0.42 and 0.51. Hung length varied from 114 m to 143 m and hung depth from 7.66 m to 9.50 m. The estimated optimum length of small mesh and large mesh was 131.40 mm and 155.29 mm respectively. Findings of the present study indicate a drastic decline in the length at first maturity of Silver pomfret to 199 mm fork length and the optimum mesh size estimated is 166 mm. Selectivity in terms of mesh size selectivity in accordance with the size at first maturity and size at first capture helps to eliminate juveniles from the gear. The knowledge of size selectivity of fishing gear types is crucial to fisheries management in order to achieve sustainable yield.

Salinity is a major ecological factor in the marine environment, and extremely important for the survival, development, and growth of fish. In this study, gill transcriptomes were examined by high-throughput sequencing at three different salinities (12 ppt as low salinity, 22 ppt as control salinity, and 32 ppt as high salinity) in an importantly economical fish silvery pomfret. A total of 187 genes were differentially expressed, including 111 up-regulated and 76 down-regulated transcripts in low-salinity treatment group and 107 genes differentially expressed, including 74 up-regulated and 33 down-regulated transcripts in high-salinity treatment group compared with the control group, respectively. Some pathways including NOD-like receptor signaling pathway, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, Toll-like receptor pathway, cardiac muscle contraction, and vascular smooth muscle contraction were significantly enriched. qPCR analysis further confirmed that mRNA expression levels of immune (HSP90A, IL-1β, TNFα, TLR2, IP-10, MIG, CCL19, and IL-11) and ion transport–related genes (WNK2, NPY2R, CFTR, and SLC4A2) significantly changed under salinity stress. Low salinity stress caused more intensive expression changes of immune-related genes than high salinity. These results imply that salinity stress may affect immune function in addition to regulating osmotic pressure in silvery pomfret.

Reproductive activity is closely related to the development and function of the brain and liver in teleosts, particularly in seasonal breeding teleosts. This study measured the involvement of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system in controlling the reproduction of the silver pomfret Pampus argenteus, a seasonal breeding tropical to temperate commercial fish. We cloned and characterized the cDNAs of igfs (igf2 and igf3) and igfrs (igf1ra, igf1rb, and igf2r) and examined their transcript levels in relation to seasonal reproduction. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that two types of IGFs (IGF-1 and IGF-2) and three types of IGFRs (IGF1RA, IGF1RB, and IGF2R) of the silver pomfret were clustered with those of teleosts; however, IGF-3 was a transmembrane protein different with the IGF-3 of other teleosts. The expression of IGF-3 was gonad-specific in the silver pomfret. The transcript levels of igf1 in the female brain were the highest, and the levels of igfrs in both sexes' brains increased during gametogenesis. Meanwhile, igfs and igfrs maintained high transcript levels in both sexes' liver and gonad during vitellogenesis and spermatogonia proliferation. We concluded that the development and activities of brain, liver, and gonad were related to the IGF system (IGFs and IGFRs). And the IGFs were mainly expressed in the liver. Nevertheless, gonadal development, especially vitellogenesis and spermatogonia proliferation, were related with IGFs in this species.

Silver pomfret [Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788)] is a perciform fish that is widely distributed in coastal regions of the Indo-West Pacific, and is a favourite food species in China. A serious disease occurred in silver pomfret at a marine fish farm in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, East China, in the summer of 2018, causing high fish mortality. Infected fish showed darkened skin, imbalanced swimming or irregular breathing, and abdominal distention with reddish ascites. When dissected, fish were found to have an enlarged spleen and pale liver. No major parasites were found during microscopic examinations of the scales, fins, and mucus of diseased pomfret. However, the spleen, kidney, liver, and gills of diseased pomfret tested positive for red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) using primers from the OIE (Oficina International de Epizootias). Typical swollen cells were observed in the spleen of RSIV-positive pomfret during histopathological analysis, with iridovirus-like particles from 131 to 178 nm in size observed under transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Degenerated erythrocytes were observed, with decreased sizes and number of cells seen in blood smears after Wright-Giemsa staining, while the number of monocytes, thrombocytes, and lymphocytes in the blood increased compared with those in normal pomfret. The major capsid protein (MCP) and adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) genes of the iridovirus found in silver pomfret were subjected to phylogenetic analyses. In the MCP phylogenetic tree, the iridovirus isolated from pomfret was clustered in subgroup 1 of the RSIV type of Megalocytivirus, with 99.80, 99.78, 99.71, and 94.49% homology with large yellow croaker iridovirus (LYCIV)-15 (Zhejiang strain), LYCIV (Fujian strain), RSIV, and infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV), respectively, and in the ATPase tree it had 100, 100, and 97% homology with LYCIV, RSIV, and ISKNV, respectively. The genetic distance of the iridovirus from silver pomfret was 0.002 from LYCIV-15 (Zhejiang), 0.002 from LYCIV (Fujian), and 0.003 from both RSIV (Japan) and marble goby iridovirus (MGIV) (Taiwan), while the distance of LYCIV (Fujian) was 0.001 from both RSIV (Japan) and MGIV (Taiwan) and 0.003 from LYCIV-15 (Zhejiang), meaning that the silver pomfret iridovirus and LYCIV (Fujian) belong to different iridovirus branches. It could be concluded that the iridovirus isolated from silver pomfret (silver pomfret iridovirus, or SPIV) is a potentially severe pathogen of silver pomfret, and a new member of subgroup 1 of the RSIV type of the Megalocytivirus genus.

Summary Two bycatch reduction devices (BRDs): a juvenile and trash fish excluder device (JTED) and a square-mesh panel (SMP), were tested in the Persian Gulf shrimp fishery from a small-scale shrimp trawler in October–November 2012. Each device was alternatively tested by using a small-mesh cover net to retain individuals that escaped the BRDs. Three valuable fish species—tigertooth croaker (Otolithes ruber), silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) and silver sillago (Sillago sihama)—were selected for detailed analyses. The effect of chitosan (CS)-gallic acid (GA) conjugate (chitosan gallate, CS-g-GA) coating on the quality of silvery pomfret (Pampus argenteus) during refrigerated storage at 4 °C for 15 days was investigated. The total mesophilic and psychrotrophic microbes in control and coated fish samples were counted periodically; physicochemical analyses to determine pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), peroxide value (POV), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), K-value, and water-holding capacity (WHC) were carried out; and sensory attributes were evaluated. The results indicated that both CS + GA and CS-g-GA coatings effectively preserved the silvery pomfret quality during refrigerated storage. However, CS-g-GA had higher antimicrobial activity and a better ability to inhibit the formation of volatile bases (TVB-N) and lipid oxidation products (POV and TBARS) as well as the degradation of ATP and its breakdown products (K value) than CS + GA during the storage period. Furthermore, the CS-g-GA coating also helped to maintain a higher WHC and had better sensory properties for a longer period of time compared to the other treated samples, thus extending the shelf life and delaying the deterioration of fresh silvery pomfret by 3–6 days during refrigerated storage. These results suggest that a CS-g-GA coating could be employed as an active packaging material in the fish preservation industry.

This study was carried out to investigate the biogenic amines (BAs), physicochemical property and microorganisms in dry salted fish, a traditional aquatic food consumed in China. Forty three samples of dry salted fish were gathered from retail and wholesale markets and manufacturers, which had been produced in various regions in China. Cadaverine (CAD) and putrescine (PUT) were quantitatively the most common biogenic amines. About 14% of the samples exceeded the histamine content standards established by the FDA and/or EU. The highest histamine content was found in Silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) (347.79 mg kg−1). Five of forty three samples exceeded the acceptable content of TYR (100 mg kg−1), and 23.26% of dried-salted fish contained high contents of biogenic amines (above 600 mg kg−1). In addition, species, regions, pickling processes and drying methods made the physicochemical property, microorganisms and biogenic amines in dry salted fish to be different to some extents. The total plate count (TPC) was much higher than that of total halophilic bacteria in all samples. The biogenic amines, physicochemical property and microbiological counts exhibited large variations among samples. Furthermore, no significant correlation between biogenic amines and physicochemical property and TPC was observed. This study indicated that dry salted fish may still present healthy risk for BAs, depending on the processing methods, storage conditions among others.

Silver pomfret fish (Stromateidae) is a family of Perciformes order. One species of this family is Pampus argenteus known as silver pomfret and lives in different parts of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Therefore, the genetic relationship between its populations is so important. In this study, eight samples of Pampus argenteus were collected from four locations involved: Emam Khomeyni, Bushehr and Bandar Abbas in Persian Gulf and Chabahar in Gulf of Oman. Cytochrome b gene and D-loop region of mitochondrial DNA on these samples are analyzed. These genes are carried out using PCR with specific mtDNA primers and sequenced. Then, the evolutionary history was inferred by using the maximum-likelihood method. Evolutionary analyses were conducted in MEGA7. According to the phylogenetic trees, with translocations in Persian Gulf to Gulf of Oman, similarity decreases slowly. Chabahar1 sample in phylogenetic tree of cytochrome b is phylogenetically near China Sea samples. The reason may be migration from ocean to gulf throughout the centuries and Chabahar is in Gulf of Oman and locationally near the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. In D-loop region, results are similar to cytochrome b excepting one sample (Emam Khomeyni1). D-Loop in samples shows modification more than cytochrome b for the reason absence of protein product.

Silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) was a demersal fish of the family Stromateidae and high economical value. The fish was caught by the mini trawler. This research aims to study the reproductive biology, growth and mortality of silver pomfret in North Kalimantan. The research was conducted in January-November 2016 in Tarakan, North Kalimantan. The length of the silver pomfret was 9.5-32 cmFL, sex ratio between female and male was unbalanced (0,55:1). The peak of spawning season in January and august. The fecundity of silver pomfret ranges from 57,969 – 248,520 eggs and the spawning type was a multispawner. length weight relationship was negative allometric. Length at first captured (Lc) was smaller than length at first matured (Lm). The Von Bertalanffy’s growth equation was Lt = 36.6 (1-e 0.51 (t +-0.30274)). The natural mortality rate (M) of silver pomfret was smaller than fishing mortality rate (F).

Activity concentration of 210Po in the edible muscle tissues of twelve sea-food species (the most common marine food consumed of population in Vietnam) were analyzed using the PIPS detectors ORTEC Alpha-Ensemble spectrometer. The 210Po activity concentration in studied samples was found to vary from 0.82 ± 0.47 to 70.3 ± 8.5 Bq/kg fresh weight. The highest activity concentration was recorded for the Blood cockle (Anadara granosa) and the lowest for Silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus). The annual committed effective dose (CED) of 210Po to humans (the local residents) due to ingestion of each studied species was calculated from 18.5 to 1586 μSv/y. The average annual committed effective dose value was reported 394 μSv/y, which is marginally higher than the average CED contributed from ingestion of food and water total in global background (290 μSv/y).

Epoxy resin was conjugated with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) to prepare antibacterial zinc oxide-epoxy resin (ZnO-ER) composite. The property of ZnO-ER was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and SEM-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) assays. Results showed the presence of ZnO NPs on the surface and cross-sections of ZnO-ER composite. The average thickness of ZnO-ER was 392.38 μm. The strong antibacterial effect of ZnO-ER on the test bacterial mixture derived from spoiled silvery pomfret (Pampus argenteus) was observed using SEM assay. After addition of ZnO-ER for 6 h in the bacterial mixture, cellular membrane integrities of most bacteria were destroyed. High-throughput 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing revealed the decreases of both community richness and diversity in the ZnO-ER treated bacterial mixture. As for relative abundances, significant decreases were detected in the phyla Bacteroidetes and Firmicute, while dramatic increase of the phylum Proteobacteria was observed after ZnO-ER treatment. The family of Enterobacteriaceae was predominant in the ZnO-ER treatment. The genera of Providencia and Yersinia showed dramatically high relative abundances. However, the abundances of some specific genera such as Aeromonas and Shewanell, which are related to human infections or food spoilage, were decreased to 0.00% after addition of ZnO-ER for 6 h. When the incubation time of ZnO-ER with the bacterial mixture was prolonged to 24 h, bacteria colony was hardly detected to a negligible level. The results suggest the potential application of ZnO-ER in food packaging to inhibit spoilage bacteria derived from aquatic organisms.

The silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) is a major economically important marine fish in China. However, P. argenteus is sensitive to many stress factors and susceptible to injury. This problem could be resolved using anesthesia. We determined the lowest effective dose (LED) of tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) and assessed the longest safe deep anesthesia time and effect after aquaculture treatment stresses. P. argenteus juveniles were exposed to six concentrations of MS-222 (10, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 125 mg L-1); LED was established at 75 mg L-1. The juveniles were exposed to different deep anesthesia times (4, 7, 10, 12, and 15 min) at 75 mg L-1; the longest safe deep anesthesia time under LED was 10 min. Finally, the juveniles were randomly divided into four groups: control group (CG), draining group (DG, drain), anesthetic group (AG, drain + MS-222 + aquaculture treatment); and non-anesthetic group (NAG, drain + aquaculture treatment). Plasma cortisol levels in the NAG, AG, DG, and CG groups were 38.739 ± 1.065 (highest), 25.083 ± 0.587, 28.644 ± 0.612, and 22.620 ± 0.836 ng mL-1 (lowest). The AG group showed significant differences in superoxide dismutase, catalase, and malondialdehyde activities, except for glutathione. HSP70, HSP90, GR1, and GR2 mRNA levels in the NAG group increased sharply in response to stressors. GR1 and GR2 mRNA levels in the AG group also increased significantly, whereas HSP70 and HSP90 mRNA levels showed no significant differences. Thus, MS-222 can reduce oxidative damage, stress reaction, and resistance to aquaculture treatment stresses in P. argenteus.

The present study was conducted to determine microbial quality have been measured in gills and gut tissues in three imported fishes samples obtained from trawl fishing boats in Al-Faw city, Basrah, Iraq. In this study, tissues samples were collected from 80 fish samples of three fresh marine fish species: silver pomfret Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788); Oriental Sole Brachirus orientalis (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) and Yellowfin seabream, Acanthopagrus latus (Houttuyn,. 1782) were collected from trawl fishing boats of Al-Faw city during period from January 2017 to April 2017. Samples of three marine fish’s species were examined for the fecal coliforms. Level of fecal coliforms was higher on tissues samples of Pampus argenteus were total number of fecal coliform identified were in 18 samples (22.50%) and in Brachirus orientalis fecal coliforms bacteria species were found in 11 samples (13.75%), while the lowest level of fecal coliforms was found in tissues samples of Acanthopagrus latus 4 (5%). To find out pathogenic bacteria culturing technique was used followed by staining for identification of bacterial species. In this study determination of coliforms especially Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella sp., three fecal coliforms Bacteria species were found (E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and Salmonella sp.) in tissues of three fish species samples in this study, E. coli was mostly present specie and it was identified in 16 tissues samples of P. argenteus (20.00%) followed by tissues samples of B. orientalis in 14 samples (17.50%), while were found in 10 tissues samples of A. latus (12.50%).

Pampus argenteus is an economically important fish that is often erroneously identified as Pampus echinogaster. No population genetic analyses have been performed on the true P. argenteus species. Here, the mitochondrial control region (CR) was used to evaluate the population genetics and elaborate the historical demography of the Silver pomfret collected from six geographical locations in China, Pakistan, and Kuwait. A high level of genetic diversity was demonstrated in this species. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed that the genetic divergence was mainly derived from within the populations (P < 0.05). A historical demographic analysis indicated that the Silver pomfret experienced a recent population expansion during the late Pleistocene. The phylogeographical structure revealed two obvious lineages that diverged in the late Pleistocene, during which the Silver pomfret populations historically experienced exotic divergence and mixed again with differentiated populations. Currently, Silver pomfret populations have insufficient time to attain migration-drift equilibrium. Population genetic data of the Silver pomfret can provide preliminary genetic knowledge for its fishery management.

Summary This study investigated the effects of elevated dietary levels of vitamin E (α-tocopherol) on growth performance, proximate composition and fatty acid profiles of juvenile silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus. Three semi-purified experimental diets were formulated to contain 49% protein and 16% lipid. High docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) tuna oil was added to the diets to supplement DHA. A graded level of vitamin E (0-, 50-, and 100 mg kg−1) was added to experimental diets 1 to 3, respectively. Analyzed vit. E levels were 155.2, 195.3 and 236.4 mg kg−1 in diets 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The experiment was conducted for 12 weeks with juvenile silver pomfret (29.6 ± 7.6 g) using a flow-through system consisting of nine 1-m3 tanks. Each treatment had three replicates and fish were stocked at the rate of 20 m−3. Growth performance and feed utilization parameters of fish fed diets 2 and 3 were significantly (P 0.05). We investigated the effects of dietary n − 3 LC-PUFAs on plasma vitellogenin (Vtg), sex steroids levels and ovarian steroidogenesis during vitellogenesis in female silver pomfret ( Pampus argenteus ) broodstock. Broodstock were fed four iso-nitrogenous, iso-energetic, and iso-lipidic experimental diets for 185 d: FO (100% fish oil), FSO (70% fish oil and 30% soybean oil), SFO (30% fish oil and 70% soybean oil), and SO (100% soybean oil) with n − 3 LC-PUFA levels of 5.18, 4.01, 3.02, and 2.22%, respectively. The results revealed that plasma FSH levels increased at vitellogenesis ( P P P P Cyp19α1α and erα expression levels significantly increased at vitellogenesis and post-vitellogenesis ( P Cyp19α1α and erα expression levels decreased in SO at vitellogenesis. In conclusion, dietary n − 3 LC-PUFAs affect ovarian steroidogenesis in silver pomfret by altering plasma FSH and LH levels and ovarian Cyp19α1α gene expression levels during vitellogenesis. High dietary n − 3 LC-PUFAs promote ovarian development in silver pomfret, by increasing E2 secretion and Vtg synthesis.

We investigated the quality characteristics and resulting sensory evaluation of semi-dried silver pomfret treated with high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) processing and brining for 14 days at 4 and 10℃ to evaluate the effects of treatment with HHP processing. HHP treatment and brining could cause compaction of fibers and the space between muscle. The G' values of all samples were higher than the G" values and the tan δ values of the tissue ranged from 0.222 to 0.251 with no further changes observed during storage. HHP treatment and brining significantly increased the total color difference, and the HHP and brine-treated group scored significantly higher than the others in terms of sensory evaluation. HHP treatment combined with brining could have a significant effect on the quality characteristics of the semi-dried products and their storage stability, and it is suggested from the results that they may have the potential to satisfy the requirements to produce commercially marketable food grade products.Key word: high hydrostatic pressure, brining, semi-drying, quality characteristics, storage stability

The effects of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP: 80%CO2/20%O2) and chitosan (CS: 10.0g/L) on the shelf-life of pomfret (Pampus argenteus) fillets during chilled storage were studied. Quality assessment was based on biochemical (total viable counts (TVC), total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), tri-methylamine (TMA-N), K-value, pH value) and sensory analysis indices determination. The results showed that MAP and CS could keep the sensory quality of Pampus argenteus, delay its deteriorating speeds and slow down the increase of K-value effectively. Compared with the control samples, the shelf-life of pomfret samples in MAP and CS stored at 4±1°C were 10, 12d respectively.
