Despite the extensive research on the debonding behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening systems, no standard methodology has been established on its experimental characterization. To assess the performance and reliability of small-scale testing on near-surface mounted (NSM) FRP strengthening systems, an experimental program was carried out on a series of nine NSM FRP strengthening systems (bars and strips), in the framework of an international round robin testing (RRT). Eleven laboratories and seven manufacturers and suppliers participated in this extensive international exercise, which regarded both NSM and EBR FRP strengthening systems. The experimental results are discussed and compared in this paper in order to investigate (1) the bond behavior of NSM strips and bars, (2) the influence of alternative single-bond or double-bond shear pulling setups adopted by the participating laboratories, and (3) the influence in concrete strength due to different constituent materials between countries in applying a prescribed mix. The results show no significant influence of the concrete strength on both failure modes and loads. On the other hand, axial stiffness and surface treatment of the FRP NSM systems strongly affect both the bond strength and the parameters identifying the bond laws. Differences of bond strength experimentally recorded for the same FRP NSM systems tested according to different setups range between 10 and 25%. Therefore, for standard bond test protocol, the single shear bond test setup is more reliable, due to its higher feasibility compared with the double shear test setup. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most applications of fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP) deal with externally bonded reinforcement as a means of repairing and strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures or retrofitting RC structures in seismic regions. As internal reinforcement, FRP rebars or (more rarely) prestressing elements are used in special projects, combining material strength and durability characteristics. Over the last years, several national and international design guidelines have become available specifically for the design and application of FRP-strengthened or FRP-reinforced concrete structures. These efforts clearly demonstrate the interest in FRP as a novel reinforcing material for concrete construction. Hence, the time had come to introduce FRP reinforcement into the new fib Model Code for Concrete Structures 2010 as well. The main contributions to the fib Model Code 2010 relate to sections 5.5 'Non-metallic reinforcement' and 6.2 'Bond of non-metallic reinforcement'. Abstract: Advanced composites are widely used for the strengthening of existing concrete structures. Current design guidelines give basic requirements on how to model the enhancement of structural performance of concrete members using surface bonded FRP (fibre reinforced polymer) reinforcement. With respect to this, it is of interest to evaluate the ductility requirements which are explicitly or implicitly imposed by design guides. Based on an evaluation of four major design guidelines in Europe, Japan and North-America, and a small parametric study, the ductility aspect of the design of FRP strengthened concrete members is verified. It appears that the ductility of flexural members strengthened with FRP should be considered with care, as reduced deformability is obtained at ultimate, though generally a minimum deformability is implicitly obtained in a proper design. At the other hand, ductility enhancement by means of FRP confinement is explicitly considered in the design guidelines. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Externally bonded laminates of fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) are becoming more and more common for rehabilitation and strengthening of RC structures, to solve problems either in serviceability or at ultimate conditions. This paper focuses on the behavior in the serviceability state: in particular, verifications in terms of cracks widths and crack spacing, used to warrant the functionality of FRP-RC structures, are considered. Test results on RC ties externally reinforced with FRP laminate are reported and the applicability of the Eurocode2 formulation used for RC elements is discussed. Currently, considerable interest exists in the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement for concrete structures. Due to the generally lower modulus of elasticity of FRP in comparison with steel and the linear behavior of FRP, certain aspects of the structural behavior of RC members reinforced with FRP may be substantially different from similar elements reinforced with steel reinforcement. In this two-part paper the use of different types of FRP grid reinforcement for concrete slabs is investigated, presenting detailed experimental and analytical work. In the first part, the structural behavior in one-way bending is considered. This paper shows which structural measures are needed to ensure acceptable serviceability behavior. The presented analysis and discussion of test results covers the ultimate state and the ultimate limit state for bending, serviceability limit states, ductility, deformability, and ultimate to service load ratio. The use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) grid reinforcement for concrete slabs has been investigated, considering the behavior of the slabs in one-way bending and under concentrated loading. The behavior under the latter loading type will be considered in this second part of a two-part paper. From the performed punching tests and the analysis, a fairly strong interaction between shear and flexural effects was noted for most of the tested slabs. For the FRP-reinforced slabs with an increased reinforcement ratio or an increased slab depth (needed to fulfill the serviceability criteria in bending), the punching strength was similar to or higher than the tested steel-reinforced reference slabs. For most slabs, slip of the bars occurred resulting in higher deflections at failure. The calculation of the punching failure load according to empirical-based models (from different codes), a modified mechanical model, and an analytical model is evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
