Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) and its derivative materials have exhibited a huge potential as a facile and versatile route to fabricate multifunctional coatings on virtually any substrate surface. However, their performance and applicability are frequently obstructed by limited optical absorption in visible regions of PDA and poor surface adhesion persistence of dopamine solutions. Herein, we report a facile strategy to improve these problems by rationally regulating the dopamine polymerization pathway through mixed-solvent-mediated periodate oxidation of dopamine. The spectral analysis, ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry, and density functional theory simulations systematically demonstrate that the mixed-solvent reaction systems can effectively accelerate the periodate-induced formation of cyclized moieties in the PDA microstructure and inhibit their further oxidative cleavage, thus contributing to narrowing the inherent energy band gap of PDA and improving the long-lasting surface deposition performance of aged dopamine solutions. Moreover, the newly constructed cyclized species-rich PDA coatings have excellent surface uniformity and significantly enhanced chemical stability. Benefiting from these fascinating properties, they have been further used for permanent dyeing of natural gray hair with remarkably improved blackening effect and excellent practicability, which exhibited their promising prospect in real-world applications.

Metal ions play critical roles in facilitating peptide folding and inducing conformational transitions, thereby impacting on the biological activity of many proteins. However, the effect of metal sites on the hierarchical structures of biopolymers is still poorly understood. Herein, inspired by metalloproteins, we report an order-to-order conformational regulation in synthetic polymers mediated by a variety of metal ions. The copolymers are decorated with clinically available desferrioxamine (DFO) as an exogenous ligand template, which presents a geometric constraint toward peptide backbone via short-range hydrogen bonding interactions, thus dramatically altering the secondary conformations and self-assembly behaviors of polypeptides and allowing for a controllable β-sheet to α-helix transition modulated by metal-ligand interactions. Concentration-dependent phase transitions in concentrated solutions have remained speculation due to the serious impediment of macromolecule dynamics by intensive topological entanglement or intermolecular interaction as well as the absence of powerful tool for detecting changes in chain or segment movement. Herein, taking a general polymer, namely, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), as an example, a water-soluble fluorescent molecule with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is introduced into the PVA solutions as a chain dynamics indicator to investigate phase transitions at high concentrations through in situ monitoring of the solvent evaporation process. Two turning points of fluorescent intensity are observed for the first time at mean concentrations of ∼25% and ∼45%, corresponding to the gelation and amorphous-to-crystalline transitions, respectively. Our work offers a fundamental insight into the physical nature of concentrate-dependent nonequilibrium transitions and develops a reliable and sensitive approach based on the AIE phenomenon for following high-concentration-triggered property changes of a polymer solution.

Peptidomimetic polymers have attracted increasing interest because of the advantages of facile synthesis, high molecular tunability, resistance to degradation, and low immunogenicity. However, the presence of non-native linkages compromises their ability to form higher ordered structures and protein-inspired functions. Here we report a class of amino acid-constructed polyureas with molecular weight- and solvent-dependent helical and sheet-like conformations as well as green fluorescent protein-mimic autofluorescence with aggregation-induced emission characteristics. The copolymers self-assemble into vesicles and nanotubes and exhibit H-bonding-mediated metamorphosis and discoloration behaviors. We show that these polymeric vehicles with ultrahigh stability, superfast responsivity and conformation-assisted cell internalization efficiency could act as an "on-off" switchable nanocarrier for specific intracellular drug delivery and effective cancer theranosis in vitro and in vivo. Formulating drugs into amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) represents an attractive means to enhance the aqueous solubility of drugs. Furthermore, water-soluble polymers have proven highly advantageous for stabilizing supersaturated solutions of ASDs. However, the performance and mechanism of various polymers in stabilizing supersaturated drug solutions have not been well-studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different commercial polymers on the dissolution behaviors and supersaturation stabilization of the ASDs and to further explore the mechanism of polymer mediated supersaturation maintenance by studying the crystallization behaviors of the ASDs. In this study, nimodipine (NMD) was used as a model drug because of its poor water-solubility and fast crystallization rate in aqueous solution, and three polymers polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), vinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer (PVP VA), and polyvinyl caprolactam-polyvinyl acetate-polyethylene glycol graft co-polymer (Soluplus) was selected as the drug carriers to form the ASDs with NMD. Solid-state characterizations of the ASDs confirmed the amorphous state of the ASD systems. ASD PVP VA demonstrated superior supersaturation maintenance in dissolution experiments compared to the other two ASD systems. Among the polymers tested, PVP VA most efficiently maintained dissolution of NMD and prevented its crystallization from the supersaturated solution. The ability of PVP VA to most-effectively maintain supersaturation of the drug was manifested by inhibition of crystal nucleation rather than inhibition of crystal growth following nucleation. Portable analytical instruments find extensive application in on-site examination because of their significant advantages: these instruments are convenient and easy-to-carry, leading to high time-effectiveness, and involve low reagent consumption. We report a portable micro-liquid chromatograph ( p -μLC) that was designed and fabricated in our laboratory. The p -μLC integrates homemade dual large-thrust syringe pumps for delivering the mobile phase, a capillary polymer monolithic column as the stationary phase for the separation of the target analytes, and a specially designed dual-functional optical-fiber microflow-cell for online detection. The dual-thrust syringe pumps can realize isocratic and/or gradient elution as well as reloading of the mobile phase, with flow rates ranging from 0.025 μL/min to 5.6 mL/min and the maximum working pressure of 4.5 MPa. The polymethacrylate based C-18 monolithic column facilitates the separation of small organic molecules and biomacromolecules. A homemade high-power light emission diode (LED) light source and a modified xenon flash lamp are assembled as the light source module. The dual-functional detector consists of an optical fiber microflow-cell with a self-focusing lens and a light-guiding capillary, light source module, and a small-sized grating spectrometer with an output wavelength range of 400-680 nm for the LED light source and 220-700 nm for the xenon flash lamp, enabling online detection of the absorption and fluorescence spectra of the analytes from 220 to 700 nm. A bifurcated optical fiber bundle is prepared and used to connect the light source, microflow-cell, and grating spectrometer so that the incident light leading-in and the fluorescence/scatting light leading-out can be realized simultaneously. The junction end of the bifurcated optical fiber bundles connects to one end of the light path of the microflow-cell, and a straight-through optical fiber connects another end of the microflow-cell. In the UV-Vis absorption mode, the straight-through optical fiber reads out the transmitted light, while in the fluorescence mode, the excitation light beam from the light source irradiates the sample solution in the flow-cell via one branch of the bifurcated optic fiber bundles. The fluorescence leading-out via the other branch of the bifurcated optical fiber bundles in the opposite direction of the excitation light beam is read out by the spectrometer. All the large-thrust syringe pumps and flow-path, capillary monolithic column, and optical fiber mediated flow-cell detection as well as controlling modules are installed in a suitcase with a total weight of less than 8 kg. The p -μLC is powered by DC 12V 3A or 18650 lithium battery pack and controlled by a panel computer with a custom-built windows-based chromatography workstation software for data acquisition. When using the home-made polymethacrylate based C-18 monolithic capillary column (530 μm ID×200 mm in length), the mixed alkylbenzenes can be separated and detected in an isocratic elution mode. The separation efficiency is comparable to that obtained with a commercially available HPLC.

The delivery of hydrophilic drugs from hydrophobic polymers is a long-standing challenge in the biomaterials field due to the limited solubility of the therapeutic agent within the polymer matrix. In this work, we develop a drug delivery mechanism that enables the impregnation and subsequent elution of hydrophilic drugs from a hydrophobic polymer material. This was achieved by synthesizing core cross-linked star polymer amphiphiles with hydrophilic cores and hydrophobic coronas. While significant work has been done to create nanocarriers for hydrophilic drugs, this work is distinct from previous work in that it designs amphiphilic and core cross-linked particles for controlled release from hydrophobic matrices. Ultraviolet-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization was used to synthesize the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based hydrophilic cores of the star polymers, and hydrophobic coronas of poly(caprolactone) (PCL) were then built onto the stars using ring-opening polymerization. We illustrated the cytocompatibility of PCL loaded with these star polymers through human endothelial cell adhesion and proliferation for up to 7 days, with star loadings of up to 40 wt %. We demonstrated successful loading of the hydrophilic drug heparin into the star polymer core, achieving a loading efficiency and content of 50 and 5%, respectively. Finally, the heparin-loaded star polymers were incorporated into a PCL matrix and sustained release of heparin was illustrated for over 40 days. These results support the use of core cross-linked star polymer amphiphiles for the delivery of hydrophilic drugs from hydrophobic polymer matrices. These materials were developed for application as drug-eluting and biodegradable coronary artery stents, but this flexible drug delivery platform could have impact in a broad range of medical applications.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is an atomic targeted radiotherapy that shows fantastic suppression impact on locally intrusive threatening tumors. One key factor for effective BNCT is to aggregate an adequate concentration (>20 ppm) of 10 B in the cytoplasm of the tumor. Carborane-loaded polymer nanoparticles are promising because of their outstanding biocompatibility and plasma steadiness. In this study, a new class of carborane-loaded nanoscale covalent organic polymers (BCOPs) was prepared by a Schiff base condensation reaction, and their solubility was greatly improved in common solvents via alkyl chain engineering and size tailoring. The obtained BCOP-5T was further functionalized by biocompatible 1,2-distearoyl- sn -glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine- N -[amino(polyethylene-glycol)-2000] (DSPE-PEG, molecular weight 2000) to form stable aqueous-phase nanoparticles with a hydrodynamic diameter of around 100 nm. After chelating with radioactive copper-64, DSPE-BCOP-5T was tracked by positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and showed significant accumulation in the tumor. DSPE-BCOP-5T + neutron radiation showed remarkable tumor suppression in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice (murine breast cancer). No obvious physical tissue damage and abnormal behavior were observed, demonstrating that the boron delivery was successful and tumor-selective. To conclude, this study presents a theranostic COP-based platform with a well-defined composition, good biocompatibility, and satisfactory tumor accumulation, which is promising for PET imaging, drug delivery, and BNCT.

Creating hierarchical polymer brushes possessing antifouling and bactericidal functionalities is a promising approach to combat biomaterial-associated infections. Hence, a well-constructed hierarchical structure is required to achieve optimized antibacterial performance. In this work, contact-killing cationic bactericidal poly(quaternary ammonium salts) (PQAs) bearing different alkyl chain lengths and zwitterionic antifouling poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) functional segments were grafted onto an activated substrate via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), and three kinds of polymer brushes with different architectures (Si-PQAs-b-PSBMA, Si-PSBMA-b-PQAs and Si-PQAs-r-PSBMA) were constructed. We demonstrate that the antibacterial effect simultaneously depends on the alkyl chain lengths of PQAs and the hierarchical structure of cationic/zwitterionic segments in polymer brushes. When the polymer brushes composed of a bactericidal bottom layer and an antifouling top layer, the ideal alkyl chain length of PQAs should be eight carbon atoms (Si-PQA8C-b-PSBMA), while in the opposite hierarchical structure, the optimized alkyl chain length of PQAs to synergize with PSBMA was four carbon atoms (Si-PSBMA-b-PQA4C). By appropriately adjusting the alkyl chain length or the hierarchical architecture, the interference between the antifouling and bactericidal functions could be avoided, thus achieving the outstanding long-term antibacterial performance against S. aureus, as well as good hemocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. This work provides fundamental guidance for the design and optimization of efficient and reliable antibacterial surfaces to inhibit biofilm formation.

The high toughness of natural spider-silk is attributed to their unique β-sheet secondary structures. However, the preparation of mechanically strong β-sheet rich materials remains a significant challenge due to challenges involved in processing the polymers/proteins, and managing the assembly of the hydrophobic residues. Inspired by spider-silk, our approach effectively utilizes the superior mechanical toughness and stability afforded by localised β-sheet domains within an amorphous network. Using a grafting-from polymerisation approach within an amorphous hydrophilic network allows for spatially controlled growth of poly(valine) and poly(valine-r-glycine) as β-sheet forming polypeptides via N-carboxyanhydride ring opening polymerisation. The resulting continuous β-sheet nanocrystal network exhibits improved compressive strength and stiffness over the initial network lacking β-sheets of up to 30 MPa (300 times greater than the initial network) and 6 MPa (100 times greater than the initial network) respectively. The network demonstrates improved resistance to strong acid, base and protein denaturants over 28 days.

Griseofulvin (GSF) is clinically employed to treat fungal infections in humans and animals. GSF was detected in surface waters as a pharmaceutical pollutant. GSF detection as an anthropogenic pollutant is considered as a possible source of drug resistance and risk factor in ecosystem. To address this concern, a new extraction and enrichment method was developed. GSF-surface molecularly imprinted polymers (GSF-SMIPs) were prepared and applied as solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbent. A dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) method was designed and combined with HPLC for the analysis of GSF in surface water samples. The performance of GSF-SMIPs was assessed for its potential to remove GSF from water samples. The factors affecting the removal efficiency such as sample pH and ionic strength were investigated and optimized. The DSPE conditions such as the amount of GSF-SMIPs, the extraction time, the type and volume of desorption solvents were also optimized. The established method is linear over the range of 0.1-100 µg/mL. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.01 and 0.03 µg/mL respectively. Good recoveries (91.6-98.8%) were achieved after DSPE. The intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations were 0.8 and 4.3% respectively. The SMIPs demonstrated good removal efficiency (91.6%) as compared to powder activated carbon (67.7%). Moreover, the SMIPs can be reused 10 times for water samples. This is an additional advantage over single-use activated carbon and other commercial sorbents. This study provides a specific and sensitive method for the selective extraction and detection of GSF in surface water samples.

Immobilized enzymes play significant roles in many practical applications. However, the enzymes need to be purified before immobilization by conventional immobilizing methods, and the purification process is expensive, laborious, complicated and results in a decrease of the enzymatic activity. So, we present a novel method by a facile one-step targeted immobilization of an enzyme without a purification process from complex samples. For this purpose, a novel molecularly imprinted polymer was prepared via a silane emulsion self-assembly method using boric acid-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles as magnetic nuclei, horseradish peroxidase as a template, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as a functional monomer and tetraethyl orthosilicate as a crosslinking agent. The molecularly imprinted polymers were characterized using a scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, vibrating sample magnetometer and X-ray diffractometer. The as-prepared and characterized materials were employed to immobilize horseradish peroxidase from a crude extract of horseradish. Moreover, the immobilized horseradish peroxidase was employed to develop visual sensors for the detection of glucose and sarcosine. This study demonstrated that the molecularly imprinted polymers prepared via the silane emulsion self-assembly method can facilely immobilize horseradish peroxidase from a crude extract of horseradish without any purification process. The developed visual method based on the immobilized horseradish peroxidase shows great potential applications for the visual detection of glucose and sarcosine.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are the most widely distributed natural toxins, and pyrrolizidine alkaloid-containing herbal medicines are probably the most common poisonous plants affecting humans. We reported pyrrolizidine alkaloid-molecularly imprinted polymer solid-phase microextraction for the selective adsorption of toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids from herbal medicine. A sulfonic compound, sodium allylsulfonate, was chosen as the functional monomer to interact with pyrrolizidine alkaloids through strong ionic interaction. To avoid template leakage and for the aim of cost saving, a relatively cheap dummy template was used for the fabrication of molecularly imprinted polymer-solid-phase microextraction fibers. The obtained fibers showed selective adsorption ability for four pyrrolizidine alkaloids, including europine, echimidine, lasiocarpine, and heliotrine. The extraction parameters, such as extraction time, extraction temperature, shaking speed, elution solvent and elution time, were optimized. Then ultra high performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry coupled with molecularly imprinted polymer-solid-phase microextraction method was developed for the fast and efficient analysis of four pyrrolizidine alkaloids from the model herbal plant Farfarae Flos. The established method was validated and exhibited satisfactory accuracy and precision. DrzBC and DrzBS (10-23 DNAzyme) could block the expression of HBV e- and s- gene respectively. But the application of 10-23 DNAzyme was limited owing to the lack of appropriate delivery vehicles. Chitosan oligosaccharide-SS-Octadecylamine (CSSO), a redox-responsive nano-sized polymeric carrier, could self-aggregate and bind with DNA by electrostatic interaction at proper mass ratio. Compared with the traditional commercial carrier Lipo2000, CSSO exhibited lower cytotoxicity, efficient cellular uptake by targeting cells, and rapidly DNA released in cytoplasm after escaping from endosomes. Including the same DNA concentration, Lipo2000/(DrzBC or DrzBS) showed maximum inhibitory rate on HBeAg (47.29 ± 1.86%) and HBsAg (33.58 ± 0.72%) secretion after 48 h incubation, and then both decreased. In contrast, HBeAg secretion inhibition by CSSO/DrzBC and HBsAg secretion inhibition by CSSO/DrzBS were up to 73.86 ± 1.77% and 67.80 ± 2.51% at 48 h, and further increased to 83.83 ± 2.34% and 76.79 ± 2.18% at 72 h, respectively. Aristolochia and related plants contain nephrotoxins and mutagens in the form of aristolochic acids (AAs). However, there is still lack of a fast and specific method for monitoring AAs in biological samples. Herein, we synthesized a hybrid magnetic mesoporous carbon-molecularly imprinted polymers (MMC@MIPs) as a novel magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for selective recognition of aristolochic acid I and II from rat urine samples. The choline chloride/glycol-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) and indomethacin were used as the eluent and dummy template molecule accordingly. The morphology, structure property and surface groups of the prepared materials were investigated in sequence, and the optimum conditions of the MMC@MIPs-MSPE procedure were also optimized well. Results showed that the proposed method had a relatively satisfactory recovery (86.7-94.3%), with low standard deviation (<4.85%) and acceptable correlation coefficients (0.991-0.996). Overall, this work not only provides an inexpensive and eco-friendly method to fabricate MMC@MIPs, but also develops a highly promising approach for the detection of aristolochic acid I and II in biological samples., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Bromelain, a cysteine endopeptidase enzyme of great commercial value, has been widely used in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Conventional methods for purification of bromelain are still limited by a low binding efficiency, time-consuming process, and expensive equipment. Therefore, for selective absorption of bromelain, we developed a facile and effective method to fabricate magnetic mesoporous molecularly imprinted polymers using pericarpium granati-derived carbon as the carrier for the first time. The characterizations of the imprinted polymers indicated that a polydopamine layer was coated on the surface of the carrier and the crystallinity of the carrier did not change. The obtained imprinted polymers exhibited favourable saturation magnetization, a high adsorption capacity of 135.96 mg g -1 , a fast equilibrium time, and satisfactory reusability. The imprinted polymers were prepared by an eco-friendly method and exhibited rapid separation and good adsorption performance, thus making the method applicable to biomacromolecular separation, proteomic analysis, and biomedical research., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Dexamethasone-imprinted polymers were fabricated by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization on the surface of magnetic nanoparticles under mild polymerization conditions, which exhibited a narrow polydispersity and high selectivity for dexamethasone extraction. The dexamethasone-imprinted polymers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectrometry, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The adsorption performance was evaluated by static adsorption, kinetic adsorption and selectivity tests. The results confirmed the successful construction of an imprinted polymer layer on the surface of the magnetic nanoparticles, which benefits the characteristics of high adsorption capacity, fast mass transfer, specific molecular recognition, and simple magnetic separation. Combined with high-performance liquid chromatography, molecularly imprinted polymers as magnetic extraction sorbents were used for the rapid and selective extraction and determination of dexamethasone in skincare cosmetic samples, with the accuracies of the spiked samples ranging from 93.8 to 97.6%. The relative standard deviations were less than 2.7%. The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 0.05 and 0.20 μg/mL, respectively. Estrone molecularly imprinted polymers were synthesized through the self-polymerization of dopamine on the surface of silica gels, which had the characteristics of mild polymerization conditions, simple reaction procedure and good specific recognition ability for estrone. The estrone molecularly imprinted polymers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis and nitrogen adsorption-desorption tests. The characterization confirmed that the imprinted polymers were successfully grafted on the surface of silica gels. Through investigating the adsorption performance, the prepared estrone molecularly imprinted polymers exhibited high adsorption capacity, fast mass transfer, as well as excellent selectivity toward estrone. The estrone molecularly imprinted polymers as the solid-phase extraction adsorbent coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography was developed to determine estrone from the milk samples. The developed estrone molecularly imprinted polymer solid-phase extraction with high-performance liquid chromatography method exhibited satisfactory specificity, precision, accuracy and good linearity relationship in the range of 0.2-20 μg/mL. Over the past two decades, biomass-derived and biodegradable polylactide (PLA) has sparked tremendous attention as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-derived polymers for diverse applications. Unfortunately, the current applications of PLA have been mainly limited to biomedical and commodity fields, mostly because the poor heat resistance (resulting from low melting temperature) and hydrolysis stability make it hard to use as an engineering plastic. Stereocomplexation between enantiomeric poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(d-lactide) (PDLA) opens a new avenue toward PLA-based engineering plastics with improved properties. The formation, crystal structure, properties, and potential applications of stereocomplex-type PLA (SC-PLA) are summarized by some research groups. However, since it is challenging to achieve full stereocomplexation from high-molecular-weight PLLA/PDLA blends and to avoid serious thermal degradation of the PLAs after complete melting, the advances and progress in the processing of SC-PLA into useful products are quite rare in open publication. In this review, some important strategies for enhancing stereocomplex crystallization in practical processing operations are presented and recently developed processing technologies for SC-PLA are highlighted, such as low-temperature sintering. Furthermore, major challenges and future developments are briefly discussed. Functional polymer composites have gained extensive interest due to their wide range of applications. Various functionalities are mainly provided by functional fillers and their networks in polymer matrix. Therefore, morphology control on filler network has important influence on the final functionalities. The confinement, assembly, and relaxation of inorganic functional fillers in polymers are thought as the basic issues related to such control. Processing as the means to achieve the desired shape and properties for materials often involves strong temperature and shear field, among other factors-not to mention the complex interaction between polymer and filler. These processing fields and interactions during processing are reported to have profound influence on the confinement, assembly, and relaxation of inorganic fillers in polymer matrix. Targeted delivery of therapeutics and diagnostics using nanotechnology holds great promise to minimize the side effects of conventional chemotherapy and enable specific and real-time detection of diseases. To realize this goal, we report a clickable and imageable nanovehicle assembled from multiblock polyurethanes (MPUs). The soft segments of the polymers are based on detachable poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and degradable poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), and the hard segments are constructed from lysine- and cystine-derivatives bearing reduction-responsive disulfide linkages and click-active alkynyl moieties, allowing for post-conjugation of targeting ligands via a click chemistry. It was found that the cleavage of PEG corona bearing a pH-sensitive benzoic-imine linkage (BPEG) could act as an on-off switch, which is capable of activating the clicked targeting ligands under extracellular acidic condition, followed by triggering the core degradation and payload release within tumor cells. In combination with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) clustered within the micellar core, the MPUs exhibit excellent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast effects and T 2 relaxation in vitro, as well as magnetically guided MR imaging and multimodal targeting of therapeutics to tumor precisely, leading to significant inhibition of cancer with minimal side effect. Carbon-based nanomaterials have recently attracted tremendous attention in adsorption, separation and biological fields. However, such modification is not always straightforward when the surface is not chemically reactive. Given this reason, most carbon materials modification processes employ reactive linkers or coupling agents, which are complicated and time-consuming. Herein, we report on a dopamine-polyethyleneimine (PEI) coating strategy to fabricate micrometer-sized magnetic carbon fiber (MSMCF)-based extracorporeal blood-cleansing sorbent for hemoperfusion. Results showed that the dopamine/PEI-coated MSMCF had a twisted fiber shape with a size range of 80-120 μm in diameter and porous structure with a specific surface area of 146 m 2  g -1 . Adsorption behavior of dopamine/PEI-modified MSMCF was examined by using bilirubin as a toxin model compound. Equilibrium data were well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximal adsorption capacity of 335.1 mg g -1 at ambient temperature. The as-obtained material had relatively high bilirubin adsorption selectivity against albumin at a normal albumin concentration. In particular, the dopamine/PEI-coated MSMCF has excellent adsorption capacity and hemocompatibility compared to the MSMCF decorated only by dopamine or PEI. Therefore, this work may pave the way for enhancing the property of the extracorporeal blood-cleansing sorbent during hemoperfusion.

Recent advances in controlled/living polymerization techniques and highly efficient coupling chemistries have enabled the facile synthesis of complex polymer architectures with controlled dimensions and functionality. As an example, star polymers consist of many linear polymers fused at a central point with a large number of chain end functionalities. Owing to this exclusive structure, star polymers exhibit some remarkable characteristics and properties unattainable by simple linear polymers. Hence, they constitute a unique class of technologically important nanomaterials that have been utilized or are currently under audition for many applications in life sciences and nanotechnologies. This article first provides a comprehensive summary of synthetic strategies towards star polymers, then reviews the latest developments in the synthesis and characterization methods of star macromolecules, and lastly outlines emerging applications and current commercial use of star-shaped polymers. The aim of this work is to promote star polymer research, generate new avenues of scientific investigation, and provide contemporary perspectives on chemical innovation that may expedite the commercialization of new star nanomaterials. We envision in the not-too-distant future star polymers will play an increasingly important role in materials science and nanotechnology in both academic and industrial settings.

A challenge in the development of multifunctional drug delivery systems is to establish a reasonable and effective synthetic route for multifunctional polymer preparation. Herein, we propose a unique protocol to prepare multifunctional micelles by a cross-assembly process using three different functional polyurethanes incorporating acidic sensitive hydrazone, folic acid for active targeting, and gemini quaternary ammonium (GQA) as efficient cell uptake ligands, respectively. These multifunctional mixed micelles (GFHPMs) have been endowed tunable particle sizes and zeta potential and a unique three-order-layer cross-assemble structure. Their drug-loading contents have been significantly improved, and drug release profiles displayed controlled release of their payloads under acid condition. The folate and GQA ligands showed a synergistic effect to enhance the cell uptake. Biodistribution and antitumor effect of these micelles were systematically investigated in vivo, the mixed micelles could penetrate into the depths of tumors, and drug concentrations in tumors reached the maximum of 6.5% ID/g at 24 h, resulting in an excellent therapeutic effect that the volumes of tumors treated with GFHPM are five times smaller than those treated with blank micelles. Our present work provides an effective approach to the design of multifunctional nanocarriers for tumor-targeted and programmed intracellular drug delivery.

In order to prepare poly(butylene succinate)/microfibrillated cellulose composites with high performance, in this work, microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) was first treated by acetylchloride with ball-milling to improve its interfacial compatibility with poly(butylene succinate) (PBS). Then melt stretching processing was adopted to further improve the dispersion and orientation of MFC in as-spun PBS fiber. And the effect of MFC on the crystalline structure and mechanical properties were systematically investigated for the melt-spun fibers prepared with two different draw ratios. The dispersion, alignment of the MFC and interfacial crystalline structure in the composite fibers are significantly influenced by the stretching force during the melt spinning. The possible formation of nanohybrid shish kebab (NHSK) superstructure where aligned MFC as shish and PBS lamellae as kebab has been suggested via SEM and SAXS in the composite fibers prepared at the high draw ratio. Burst release of a payload from polymeric particles upon photoirradiation was engineered by altering the cross-linking density. This was achieved via a dual cross-linking concept whereby noncovalent cross-linking was provided by cyclodextrin host-guest interactions, and irreversible covalent cross-linking was mediated by continuous assembly of polymers (CAP). The dual cross-linked particles (DCPs) were efficiently infiltrated (∼80-93%) by the biomacromolecule dextran (molecular weight up to 500 kDa) to provide high loadings (70-75%). Upon short exposure (5 s) to UV light, the noncovalent cross-links were disrupted resulting in increased permeability and burst release of the cargo (50 mol % within 1 s) as visualized by time-lapse fluorescence microscopy. As sunlight contains UV light at low intensities, the particles can potentially be incorporated into systems used in agriculture, environmental control, and food packaging, whereby sunlight could control the release of nutrients and antimicrobial agents.

On account of the specificity and reproducibility for the determination of penicilloic acid in penicillin, this study aims to prepare penicilloic acid imprinted polymers (PEOA-MIPs) by surface polymerization method at the surface of modified silica particles by using penicilloic acid (PEOA) as the template molecule, methacrylic acid (MAA) as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate ( EGDMA) as the cross linker, and methanol/acetonitrile as the solvents. The synthesis conditions were optimized, and PEOA-MIPs had the best adsorption capacity when the molar ratio of template molecule/functional monomer was 1 :4, cross linking degree was 85% and the solvent ratio of methanol/acetonitrile was 1 :1 (v/v). The adsorption properties were evaluated by adsorption experiments, including the adsorption isotherms, kinetics and selectivity. The adsorption process between PEOA-MIPs and PEOA fitted the Langmuir adsorption isotherm with the maximum adsorption capacity of 122. 78 mg/g and the pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics with fast adsorption kinetics (the equilibrium time of 45 min). The as-synthesized PEOA-MIPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that the MIPs layer has been successfully grafted on the surface of SiO2 microparticles and the PEOA-MIPs had the excellent thermal stability. The PEOA-MIPs showed the highest selective recognition for PEOA. The PEOA-MIPs possess a high adsorption capacity, rapid mass-transfer rate and high selectivity to PEOA when compared with non-imprinted polymers (PEOA-NIPs). The PEOA-MIPs was expected to be used as the solid phase extraction medium and this study provides the potential applications for fast recognition and analysis of the penicilloic acid in penicillin.

In order to improve oral bioavailability of tacrolimus (FK506), a novel poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic anhydride)-graft-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin amphiphilic copolymer (CD-PVM/MA) is developed, combining the bioadhesiveness of PVM/MA, P-glycoprotein (P-gp), and cytochrome P450-inhibitory effect of CD into one. The FK506-loaded nanoparticles (CD-PVM/MA-NPs) were obtained by solvent evaporation method. The physiochemical properties and intestinal absorption mechanism of FK506-loaded CD-PVM/MA-NPs were characterized, and the pharmacokinetic behavior was investigated in rats. FK506-loaded CD-PVM/MA-NPs exhibited nanometer-sized particles of 273.7 nm, with encapsulation efficiency as high as 73.3%. FK506-loaded CD-PVM/MA-NPs maintained structural stability in the simulated gastric fluid, and about 80% FK506 was released within 24 h in the simulated intestinal fluid. The permeability of FK506 was improved dramatically by CD-PVM/MA-NPs compared to its solution, probably due to the synergistic inhibition effect of P-gp and cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A). The intestinal biodistribution of fluorescence-labeled CD-PVM/MA-NPs confirmed its good bioadhesion to the rat intestinal wall. Two endocytosis pathways, clathrin- and caveolae-mediated endocytosis, were involved in the cellular uptake of CD-PVM/MA-NPs. The important role of lymphatic transport in nanoparticles' access to the systemic circulation, about half of the contribution to oral bioavailability, was observed in mesenteric lymph duct ligated rats. The AUC0-24 of FK506 loaded in nanoparticles was enhanced up to 20-fold compared to FK506 solutions after oral administration. The present study suggested that the novel multifunctional CD-PVM/MA is a promising efficient oral delivery carrier for FK506, due to its ability in solubilization, inhibitory effects on both P-gp and CYP 3A, high bioadhesion, and sustained release capability.

In the previous study, we have synthesized an amphiphilic copolymer of nanostructure-forming material and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inhibitor, lysine-linked ditocopherol polyethylene glycol 2000 succinate (PLV2K). The cytotoxicty in vitro and anticancer efficacy in vivo after intravenous administration of DOX-loaded PLV2K micelles (PLV2K-DOX) was found more effective than DOX solution (DOX-Sol). However, its performance and mechanism on oral absorption of doxorubicin are not well understood yet. PLV2K-DOX are spherical micelles with a narrow size distribution of 20.53 ± 2.44 nm. With an in situ intestinal perfusion model, the intestinal absorption potential of PLV2K-DOX was evaluated in comparison with DOX-Sol. PLV2K-DOX was specifically absorbed in duodenum and ileum sites of rats after oral administration. The intestinal absorption rate (Ka) of PLV2K-DOX is 3.19-, 1.61-, and 1.80-fold higher than that of DOX-Sol in duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, respectively. In Caco-2 uptake studies, PLV2K-DOX micelles significantly improve the internalized amount of DOX by P-gp inhibition of free PLV2K copolymer and endocytosis of DOX-loaded nanoparticles. Moreover, PLV2K-DOX micelles improve the membrane permeability of DOX by multiple transcytosis mechanisms, including caveolin-, clathrin-dependent, and caveolin-/clathrin-independent transcytosis in Caco-2 transport studies. However, the transepithelia electrical resistance (TEER) of Caco-2 cellular monolayer is not changed, suggesting no involvement of paracellular transport of PLV2K-DOX. In vivo pharmacokinetics in rats following oral administration demonstrated that PLV2K-DOX demonstrates higher AUC (5.6-fold) and longer t1/2 (1.2-fold) than DOX-Sol. The findings suggest the new PLV2K micelles might provide an effective nanoplatform for oral delivery of anticancer drugs with poor membrane permeability and low oral bioavailability.

In this study, a selective sample pretreatment procedure combing surface molecularly imprinted polymers and microextraction in packed syringe (SMIPs-MEPS) was developed for the analysis of clenbuterol (CLB) from pork samples. SMIPs for CLB were synthesized on silica gel particles through a sol-gel process. A series of characterization and adsorption experiments revealed that the SMIPs exhibited porous structures, good thermal stability, high adsorption capacity and a fast mass transfer rate. The obtained SMIPs were employed as selective sorbents of SMIPs-MEPS for extraction of CLB from pork samples. Several parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were investigated, including the pH of sample solution, number of draw-eject cycles, volume of sample, type and volume of washing solution, and the type and volume of elution solution. Under the optimized conditions, a simple and rapid method for the determination of CLB from pork samples was established by coupling with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The whole pretreatment process was rapid and it can be accomplished with 2min. The limit of quantitation and the limit of detection for CLB were 0.02 and 0.009μgkg(-1), respectively. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for selective adsorption of ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC) were synthesised by an in situ method, in which salbutamol (SAL) was used as the dummy-template to avoid the template leakage. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury porosimerty and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to investigate the physical and morphological characteristics of the dummy-template MIPs. The test of adsorption selectivity indicated that the dummy-template MIPs exhibited high selectivity to RAC. The saturated adsorption capacity for RAC on dummy-template MIPs was 90.9 μg g(-1). Based on the dummy-template polymers, a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method was developed for the selective analysis of RAC in real pork samples. The averages of intra- and inter-day accuracy ranged from 78.9% to 92.2% and from 90.7% to 93.1%, respectively. The RSD% of repeatability ranged from 1.9% to 6.3%, and the RSD% of intermediate precision ranged from 3.5% to 9.2%, while the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.02 μg kg(-1)., (Crown Copyright © 2013. A simple and straightforward method of self-assembling grafted copolymers was developed to fabricate cross-linked polymer vesicles, which could conjugate anticancer drug cis-platinum and possess the capability of a high drug loading content, and a steady release rate.

Background: The difference in clinical outcome between paclitaxal-eluting stents (PES) and sirolimus-eluting stents with bio-degradable polymer (SES-BDP) for bifurcation lesions remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the one-year clinical outcome after DK crush stenting using PES (Taxus(TM)) vs. SES-BDP (Excel(TM)) from our database., Methods: A total of 275 patients (90 from the DKCRUSH-I and 185 from the DKCRUSH-II study) were studied. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) at 12 months; including cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI), or target vessel revascularization (TVR). The rate of binary restenosis and stent thrombosis served as secondary endpoints., Results: At follow-up, minimal luminal diameter (MLD) in the Taxus group was (2.11 ± 0.66) mm, with resultant increased target lesion revascularization (TLR) 12.2% and TVR 14.4%, significantly different from the Excel group; (2.47 ± 0.56) mm, P < 0.001, 3.2%, P = 0.006, 4.9%, P = 0.019, respectively. As a result there was a significant difference in MACE between the Taxus (20.0%) and Excel (10.3%, P = 0.038) groups. Overall stent thrombosis was monitored in 11 patients (4.0%), with five in the Excel group (2.7%) and six in the Taxus group (6.7%). All stent thrombosis in the Excel group was classified as early, and all were defined as late in the Taxus group., Conclusion: The Excel stent had lower rate of stent thrombosis, TLR, TVR, and composite MACE at 12-month after an indexed stenting procedure, compared to the Taxus stent.

To reduce the side effects and improve the lack of clinical treatment countermeasures in endometriosis chemotherapy, a polymeric micelle gene delivery system composed of lipid grafted chitosan micelles (CSO-SA) and the pigment epithelium derived factor (PEDF) was designed. Due to the cationic property, the glycolipid-like micelles could compact the PEDF to form complexes nanoparticles. The complexes nanoparticles with an N/P at 9.6 had 135.6 nm volume average hydrodynamic diameters with a narrow size distribution, and 6.4 ± 0.1 mV surface potential. PEDF can be distributed to endometriotic lesions in a rat model of peritoneal endometriosis mediated by CSO-SA via the intravenous injection. It showed that the CSO-SA/PEDF nanoparticles gene therapy caused decrease in the sizes of the endometriotic lesions and atrophy and degeneration of ectopic endometrium significantly. And it showed no toxicity to the reproductive organs under electron microscope observation. In addition, a reduction in microvessel density labeled by Von Willebrand factor was observed and no decrease in α-Smooth Muscle Actine-positive mature vessels. And the index of apoptotic was increased significantly in endometriotic lesions of CSO-SA/PEDF group. So, glycolipid-like structure micelles mediated PEDF gene delivery system could be used as an effective treatment approach for endometriosis disease., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: • To study the operability and effectiveness of a biodegradable ureteral stent for clinical treatment of ureteral war injury using a canine model., Materials and Methods: • A device was designed and employed to generate firearm fragment wounds in unilateral ureters (on randomly chosen sides) of nine beagles (Group A). The wounded ureters were then debrided and sutured. • Intravenous pyelography (IVP) and radioactive renography were performed 40, 80 and 120 days postoperatively. In Group B, firearm fragment wounds were made to the bilateral ureters in nine beagles. A polylactic acid stent was placed unilaterally (on a randomly chosen side) whereas the ureter on the other side was debrided and sutured without stenting. • Both IVP and radioactive renography were performed 40, 80 and 120 days postoperatively. The operability and effectiveness of the biodegradable ureteral stent were studied thereafter., Results: • In Group A, hydronephrosis and hydroureter occurred and worsened postoperatively on the wounded sides in all nine beagles. The ratio of the renal partial concentration indices (RPCI) between the kidneys (unwounded side : wounded side) increased. • The ratio of the kidney washout half-time between the kidneys (unwounded side : wounded side) decreased. In Group B, neither hydronephrosis nor hydroureter was found postoperatively in the stented ureters but both occurred in the unstented ureters in all nine beagles. • The ratio of RPCI between kidneys (stented side : unstented side) increased whereas the kidney washout half-time ratio between the stented and unstented sides decreased. Differences were significant., Conclusion: • In Group A, the new canine model for firearm fragment wounds was tested and proved to be operable and effective. In Group B, hydronephrosis and hydroureter were effectively prevented in ureters by biodegradable stent placement compared with the non-stented ureters where hydronephrosis and hydroureter occurred. Stearic acid-g-chitosan (low molecular weight chitosan CS-SA) with different amino-substituted degrees was synthesized and evaluated as an oral delivery vehicle in this paper. Synthesized CS-SA with 4.47%, 24.36% and 40.36% amino-substituted degree (SD) could form micelles by self-aggregation in aqueous medium. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) ranged from about 0.16 to 0.25 mg/mL, which decreased with the increased SD of CS-SA. The CS-SA micelles had 33.4-130.9 nm size and 22.9- 48.4 mV zeta potential. CS-SA with higher SD had the smaller size and the higher zeta potential. The permeability and possible transport route of CS-SA micelles across the gastrointestinal tract was investigated by in vitro model Caco-2 cells. The results exhibited that the CS-SA micelles had good permeability, and the permeability enhanced with increasing SD of the CS-SA. The transport of the micelles showed energy, pH and concentration dependent transcytosis process, mainly through macropinocytosis and partly via fluid-phase transcytosis and caveolar route. The reversible decrease in transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) by treatment of micelles suggested that paracellular transport pathway was another route of the micelles crossing the gastrointestinal tract. Using doxorubicin (DOX) as a model drug, the permeation results further demonstrated that the DOX transport mediated by CS-SA micelles could avoid efflux via P-glycoprotein. In vivo study demonstrated that the micelles could significantly improve the bioavailability of encapsulated drug. The results presented that the CS-SA with higher SD was a promising vehicle for oral drugs.

A study on the mechanism for the degraded toughness in nylon 6/clay nanocomposite is explored in this article. Such a nanocomposite exhibits lower specific essential work of fracture we and specific nonessential work of fracture betawp than its pure nylon 6 counterpart, as revealed by essential work of fracture (EWF) measurements. Furthermore, the molecular orientation in a small region (20x20 microm2) ahead of crack tip, obtained from micro-FTIR measurements for the first time, is found to be lower in the nanocomposite during crack initiation and propagation. The decreased molecular orientation, mostly resulted from severe microvoiding at crack tips, is responsible for the reduced specific essential work of fracture we. Meanwhile, the molecular orientation around crack tip also indicates that lower plastic deformation occurs in the plastic zone, which is well correlated with decreased specific nonessential work of fracture betawp in the nanocomposite.

A series of mixed-ligand coordination complexes, namely [Zn(L(1))(oba)] (), [Cd(L(1))(oba)] (), [Zn(2)(L(2))(oba)(2)].8H(2)O (), [Cd(2)(L(2))(oba)(2)].2H(2)O (), [Zn(3)(L(3))(oba)(3)] (), [Cd(2)(L(3))(oba)(2)].(L(3)) (), [Cd(L(4))(oba)].H(2)O () and [Cd(L(5))(oba)].3H(2)O (), where L(1) = 2-(2-pyridyl)imidazole, L(2) = 1,4-bis[2-(2-pyridyl)imidazol-1-yl]butane, L(3) = 1,4-bis[2-(2-pyridyl)imidazol-1-ylmethyl]benzene, L(4) = 1,3-bis[2-(2-pyridyl)imidazol-1-ylmethyl]benzene, L(5) = 1,2-bis[2-(2-pyridyl)imidazol-1-ylmethyl]benzene and H(2)oba = 4,4'-oxydibenzoic acid, have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Their structures have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and further characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses. In compounds and , oba(2-), L(1) ligand and Zn(II) or Cd(II) ions assemble to form the parallel chains or parallel sheets which are linked by the weak hydrogen bonding and pipi stacking interactions to give the 2D supramolecular sheet or 3D supramolecular net, respectively. For , L(2) ligands connect [Zn(oba)] chains to generate a unusual (10,3)-b topological structure which is the first example for eight-fold interpenetrating framework based on the (10,3)-b net. In , L(2) ligands link [Cd(oba)] double-chains to give a 2D sheet which is assembled by pipi stacking interactions to obtain a 3D supramolecular net. In , L(3) ligands link Zn(II) ions from alpha-Po net formed by Zn(II) ions and oba(2-) anions to show a novel 3D 8-connected self-penetrating framework with the unreported (4(16).6(11).8) topological structure. In , the double-chains constructed by Cd(II) and oba(2-) anions are linked by one kind of L(3) ligand to form a layer-like structure which is assembled by pipi stacking interactions to show a 3D supramolecular structure. In , oba(2-) anions coordinate to Cd(II) cations to form chains which are connected by L(4) to form a four-fold interpenetrating diamond network. In , the weak hydrogen bonding and pipi stacking interactions connect the [Cd(L(5))(oba)] chains to give a 2D supramolecular sheet. By careful inspections of the structures of , we believe that the different flexible and angular neutral ligands, coordination geometries of metal centers and weak interactions (hydrogen bonds and pipi stacking interactions) are crucial factors for the formation of the different structures. The photoluminescent properties of have been studied in the solid state at room temperature.

A polymer foam replication technique was used to prepare porous scaffolds of 13-93 bioactive glass with a microstructure similar to that of human trabecular bone. The scaffolds, with a porosity of 85+/-2% and pore size of 100-500 microm, had a compressive strength of 11+/-1 MPa, and an elastic modulus of 3.0+/-0.5 GPa, approximately equal to the highest values reported for human trabecular bone. The strength was also considerably higher than the values reported for polymeric, bioactive glass-ceramic and hydroxyapatite constructs prepared by the same technique and with the equivalent level of porosity. The in vitro bioactivity of the scaffolds was observed by the conversion of the glass surface to a nanostructured hydroxyapatite layer within 7 days in simulated body fluid at 37 degrees C. Protein and MTT assays of in vitro cell cultures showed an excellent ability of the scaffolds to support the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblastic cells, both on the surface and in the interior of the porous constructs. Scanning electron microscopy showed cells with a closely adhering, well-spread morphology and a continuous increase in cell density on the scaffolds during 6 days of culture. The results indicate that the 13-93 bioactive glass scaffolds could be applied to bone repair and regeneration.

Phenol and cresol (o-, m-, and p-) were selected as the adsorbates with different dipole moment (cresol>phenol, methyl being electron-drawing group) and solubility (phenol>cresol, methyl being hydrophobic group). Macropore polymers (NDA-1800 and XAD-4), hypercrosslinked polymers (NDA-100), and chemically modified adsorbents (NDA-150 and NDA-99), were comparatively used to investigate the adsorption properties including equilibria, thermodynamics and kinetics. First, all of the results about equilibria show that the adsorption data fit well to the Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity of NDA-99 and NDA-150 especially for phenol is larger in a certain extent than other three types of polymers. The hydrophobic interaction from large specific surface was mainly occurred, while the polar groups containing oxygen and amine markedly enhance the adsorption process via hydrogen interaction. Furthermore, the adsorption amount for NDA-99 and XAD-4 decrease linearly with the solubility of solutes tested. Then, the negative values of enthalpy demonstrate the predominantly exothermic and physical solid-extraction processes. Finally, the relatively more rapid adsorption process could be found onto NDA-150 than NDA-99, with the reason of the double larger pore size of the former. In conclusion, solubility of solute, together with surface area, pore size and modified groups, extremely exerts influences to the adsorption performances.

Herein, polymeric micelles with glycolipid-like structure and about 40 nm diameter are prepared by self-aggregation from stearate-grafted chitosan oligosaccharides in aqueous medium. The micelles, with high degree of substitution (DS), present specific spatial structure with multiple hydrophobic "minor cores", and thus obtain excellent internalization into cancer cells and accumulation in cytoplasm. Furthermore, the micelles showed pH-sensitive properties, thus favoring intracellular delivery of encapsulated drug via endocytosis. The cell cytotoxicity of paclitaxel encapsulated in micelles was improved sharply and contributed to the increased intracellular delivery of the drug. The present micelles are a promising carrier candidate for targeting therapy of antitumor drugs with a cytoplasmic molecule target.

Ephedrine-imprinted polymeric microspheres have been prepared in an aqueous system by multi-step swelling and suspension polymerization, using methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linker. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used as a means to identify the structure features of the obtained polymers. Further, we examined the recognition mechanism of the polymers and the influences of some chromatographic conditions, such as the mobile-phase composition, flow-rate, column temperature and sample amount on the retentivity and selectivity for (-)-ephedrine and (+)-ephedrine. The results reveal that stable macroporous polymer beads with good size monodispersity were obtained, the average size of which was 3-5 microm. Baseline chiral separation of the template isomers was achieved on a short column (50 mmx4.6 mm i.d.) when the prepared polymer beads were used as a stationary phase, while the non-imprinted polymers (NIPs) did not show such ability. The optimized chromatographic condition was as follows: acetonitrile-acetic acid (99.8/0.2, v/v) as the mobile phase; sample amount, 40-80 microg; flow rate, 1.0 ml min-1; and column temperature, room temperature, respectively. It is assumed that two classes of binding sites exist in the porous polymers, one being hydrophilic binding sites, the other being hydrophobic binding sites.

In this article, we designed and synthesized biomembrane mimicing segmented poly(carbonate urethane)s containing fluorinated alkyl phosphatidylcholine (PC) side groups. To obtain these novel poly(carbonate urethane)s, a new diol with a long side chain fluorinated alkyl phosphatidylcholine polar headgroup (2-[2-2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9-hexadecafluoro-10-ethoxy-decyloxy-N-(2-hydroxy-1-hydroxymethyl-1-methyl-ethyl)-acetamide] phosphatidylcholine, HFDAPC) was first synthesized and characterized. Then a series of poly(carbonate urethane)s containing fluorinated alkyl phosphatidylcholine side groups were synthesized using methylenebis(phenylene isocyanate) (MDI), poly(1,6-hexyl-1,5-pentyl carbonate) diol (PHPCD), 1,4-butandiol (BDO), and HFDAPC. The obtained fluorinated phosphatidylcholine poly(carbonate urethane)s (FPCPCU) possessed high molecular weight, narrower molecular weight distribution, and good mechanical properties as characterized by GPC and Instron, showing an increased hydrophilicity and a possible arrangement of surface structure as characterized by water contact angle. XPS results indicated that the phosphatidylcholine polar headgroups have been indeed pulled out to the surface with the help of the migration of the fluorinated side chain that was directly connected with the phosphatidylcholine polar headgroup. A preliminary result by protein adsorption and platelet adhesion experiments suggested that only 5 approximately 12.5 mol % phosphatidylcholine could be enough for good hemocompatibility. The current work demonstrates a new synthetic approach that can be used to bring the bioactive PC groups to the surface of the PC-containing polyurethanes more effectively.

Uniformly sized molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for (S)-nilvadipine have been prepared by a multistep swelling and polymerization method using methacrylic acid, 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid, 2-vinylpyridine, or 4-vinylpyridine (4-VPY) as a functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) as a cross-linker. The chiral recognition abilities of the MIPs for nilvadipine and other dihydropyridine calcium antagonists were evaluated using a mixture of sodium phosphate buffer (or water) and acetonitrile or only acetonitrile as the mobile phase. The (S)-nilvadipine-imprinted 4-VPY-co-EDMA polymers gave the highest resolution for nilvadipine among the MIPs prepared. In addition, the enantioseparation of nilvadipine was attained using the (S)-nilvadipine-imprinted EDMA polymers, without use of a functional monomer. 1H NMR and molecular modeling studies suggested a one-to-one hydrogen-bonding-based complex formation of (S)-nilvadipine with 4-VPY in chloroform. These results reveal that the (S)-nilvadipine-imprinted EDMA polymers could recognize the template molecule by its molecular shape, and that in addition to this recognition, hydrophobic and hydrogen-bonding interactions seems to play important roles in the retention and chiral recognition of nilvadipine on the 4-VPY-co-EDMA polymers in hydroorganic mobile phases. By optimizing chromatographic conditions such as column temperature and flow rate, the baseline separation of nilvadipine enantiomers was attained with a short analysis time and with a column efficiency comparable to commercially available chiral stationary phases based on a protein, such as ovomucoid or alpha1-acid glycoprotein.

PBAT is a popular biodegradable plastic, which has good ductility and flexibility, but the strength of PBAT is not high, which leads to the limitation of its application. In order to improve the strength of PBAT, it is necessary to modify it. In this paper, the research progress of PBAT modification was reviewed from the aspects of blending and polymerization. The melt blending modification of PBAT with biodegradable polymers, inorganic particles, and natural polymers, and the polymerization modification of PBAT were summarized. In the future, the compatibility between the modified filler and the matrix should be further improved in the blending modification. The polymerization modification should be designed through the polymer chain structure to control the proportion and distribution of rigid and flexible groups and the topology of the polymer chain, so as to improve the strength of PBAT. The hygroscopic dopants used in Spiro‐OMeTAD hole‐transport materials (HTMs) in n–i–p perovskite solar cells (PSCs) inevitably cause device degradation. Herein, two polymer interface materials based on lead anchoring groups are developed. It is found that 2D polymers 2DP‐BT and 2DP‐Por can form dense films and exhibit excellent hydrophobicity. Importantly, 2DP‐Por can passivate the surface defects through noncovalent interactions, reducing nonradiative recombination loss. After introducing these polymer interface materials between the perovskite layer and the HTM layer, the optimized devices using 2DP‐Por and 2DP‐BT achieve champion power conversion efficiency of 24.12% and 23.29%, respectively, and the stability is significantly improved. These results indicate that developing polymer interface materials containing lead anchoring groups can improve PSC efficiency and stability and elucidate critical molecular design rules for interface materials. The applications of bioresponsive materials are limited by the low levels of physiological triggers and spatiotemporal barriers in vivo. To address these issues, a light‐controlled "Trojan horse" strategy is proposed by encapsulating a photo‐caged reducing agent within reduction‐responsive polymer vesicles. The polymersomes act as an enzyme‐inspired nanoreactor for efficient photo‐synthesis of dithiothreitol in situ, which attacks the disulfide bonds in polymer backbones and disintegrates the vehicles from the inside in a nanoconfined space. The assembly‐catalyzed photoreduction reaction overcomes the temporal and spatial barriers for hyper‐responsivity and enables ultrafast drug release even at 0.014 mm of dithiothreitol residues, a concentration 715 times lower than that required to cleave disulfide bonds. In addition, in both vitro and vivo, the equipment of upconverting nanoparticles and photothermal agents creates a near‐infrared light‐activated and self‐heating nanoreactor, which allows for efficient intracellular drug delivery and excellent photo‐chemo‐immunotherapy of tumors. Metal ions play critical roles in facilitating peptide folding and inducing conformational transitions, thereby impacting on the biological activity of many proteins. However, the effect of metal sites on the hierarchical structures of biopolymers is still poorly understood. Herein, inspired by metalloproteins, we report an order‐to‐order conformational regulation in synthetic polymers mediated by a variety of metal ions. The copolymers are decorated with clinically available desferrioxamine (DFO) as an exogenous ligand template, which presents a geometric constraint toward peptide backbone via short‐range hydrogen bonding interactions, thus dramatically altering the secondary conformations and self‐assembly behaviors of polypeptides and allowing for a controllable β‐sheet to α‐helix transition modulated by metal–ligand interactions. These metallopolymers could form ferritin‐inspired hierarchical structures with high stability and membrane activity for efficient brain delivery across the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and long‐lasting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in vivo.
