Dietary consumption of contaminated vegetables is the main route of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, there is a lack of research on PAHs in vegetables from northwest China. In this study, the concentrations, sources, and risk assessment of PAHs in the soil and vegetables of Urumqi, an urbanized city in Xinjiang, China, were investigated. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs in soil and vegetable samples ranged 10.58–77.20 and 93.7–1071.8 ng/g, with average values of 2.86 and 242.76 ng/g, respectively. Among vegetable samples, the concentrations were in the order: leafy vegetables (299.08 ng/g) > fruits (192.65 ng/g) > vegetable roots (152.05 ng/g). The source apportionment of PAHs was identified using positive matrix factorization. The primary sources of PAHs in soil samples are oil spills, traffic emissions, coal combustion, and coke combustion. The main sources of PAHs in vegetable samples are oil spills and burning of grass, wood, coal, and coke. In soil samples, the ecological risk caused by PAHs is at a safe level, and the incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) of ingestion exposure exceed 1.0 × 10–6, which will pose potential risks to human body. The ILCRs of vegetable samples revealed that all groups had potential risks from onion and cabbage consumption (ILCRs > 1.0 × 10–6). As a carrier of toxic substances, household dust has a great impact on human health. Here we collected 73 household dust samples from 27 provinces and 1 municipality in China to investigate the levels, spatial distribution, sources, and carcinogenic risk of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total concentrations of 14 detected PAHs (∑14 PAHs) ranged from 3.72 to 60,885 ng g−1. High ∑14 PAHs were found in Northeast and Southwest China. High molecular weights (HMW) PAHs (4–6 rings) were predominant PAHs in most dust samples, accounting for 93.6% of ∑14 PAHs. Household fuel, cooking frequency, air conditioning, and smoking were the main factors influencing PAH concentrations in household dust. Principal component analysis model indicated that fossil combustion (81.5%) and biomass combustion and vehicle exhaust (8.1%) are the primary sources of PAHs. Positive matrix factorization model suggested that household cooking and heating contributed about 70% of ∑14 PAHs, and smoking contributed another 30%. The values of benzo[a]pyrene equivalent in rural dust were found to be higher than those in urban dust. The sum of toxic equivalents (TEQs) of 14 PAHs were in range of 0.372–7241 ng g−1, in which 7 HMW PAHs accounted for 98.0 ± 1.98% of the total TEQs. Monte Carlo Simulation showed a low to moderate potential carcinogenic risk of PAHs in household dusts. To analyse the distribution characteristics, potential sources and health risks of PAHs in the surface soil of the Guan River Estuary Industrial Area, 30 samples along the Guan River were collected. Sixteen types of PAHs were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that the total content of the 16 PAHs (Σ16PAHs) ranged from 1212.8–12264.5 ng/g, and the arithmetic mean and median were 3504.8 ng/g and 2396.5 ng/g, respectively. The concentrations of 7 carcinogenic PAHs (Σ7carPAHs) ranged from 546.1–5742.3 ng/g, accounting for 34–54% of the Σ16PAHs. The pollution of the PAHs was intermediate compared with that of other industrial areas in China. Fluoranthene, pyrene and benzo[a] pyrene (BaP) are the main monomer PAHs. There was a weak positive correlation between the total organic carbon and the PAHs, and a negative correlation between the PAHs and the pH was found. The characteristic ratio and principal component analysis (PCA) show that the PAHs mainly come from combustion sources, especially the combustion process of coal and coke from industrial areas. The TEQBaP (toxic equivalency quantity relative to BaP) concentrations of 7 types of carcinogenic PAHs accounted for 99% of the Σ16TEQBaP. According to the Canadian soil environmental quality standard, 87% of the sampling site’s PAH pollution values exceeded the safety value, suggesting that there is a potential ecological risk in the Guan River Estuary industrial area. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of organic pollutants widely present in various environmental media. Some PAHs have carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic effects. Urban lakes are severely polluted by PAHs due to human activities. Longyang Lake (LL) and Moshui Lake (ML), which serve as entry lakes for Wuhan's "Six Lakes Connectivity" project, were chosen as the study areas to learn about the migration of PAHs. Water flows from LL to ML through the Mingzhu River. Multi-Media Mass Balance Model (MMBM) and fugacity fractions (ff) were used to characterize the migration of PAHs under the hydrological connectivity project. Compared to ff, the MMBM can describe the migration of PAHs in a more detailed and quantitative way. The concentration of PAHs in water of LL decreased from 36.5 ng L -1 to 26.59 ng L -1 over 43 days, while those in ML increased from 46.8 ng L -1 to 198.25 ng L -1 over 141 days. Sediment takes a longer time to decrease to stabilization. The concentration of PAHs in the sediment of LL decreased from 932 ng g -1 to 0.95 ng g -1 over 13.33 years, while those in ML decreased from 4812 ng g -1 to 1.04 ng g -1 over 16.96 years. The stabilized concentrations were consistently lower than the observed concentrations and fell below the modeled stabilized concentrations obtained in the unconnected case (2170 ng L -1 in water and 40.81 ng g -1 in sediment). The MMBM showed that PAHs in the lake are mainly exported through runoff. However, modeling results indicated that upstream LL did not increase total PAHs concentrations in the ML because the output from ML was significantly higher. Sediment parameters sensitively influenced the results of the model. In this study, we collected 177 soil samples from major tea-producing areas in China, systematically investigated the spatial distribution characteristics of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soil of these tea plantations and discussed the environmental factors influencing of the PAHs in tea garden soil. The feature ratio method and source analysis methods were used to determine the PAHs source in tea garden soil, and the potential risk of PAHs in tea garden soil was also evaluated. The results showed that the concentrations of the 16 PAHs in 177 samples ranged from 6.21 to 4068.91 ng g -1 , with an average of 257.00 ng g -1 . The majority of PHAs in tea garden soils predominantly contained a 5-6 ring pattern, and the highest content was indeno (1,2,3-cd) pyrene (InP, 23%) and benzo (b) fluoranthrene (BbF, 16%). In addition, 10.16% of the PAHs in tea plantation soils contained a 2-3-ring pattern, with naphthalene (NAP) having the highest content. PAH source in Chinese tea garden soil was predominantly mixed combustion, such as incomplete biomass combustion, petroleum combustion, coal combustion and wood combustion. The PAHs distribution was mainly affected by the industrial structure, geographical location of tea plantation, climatic conditions, soil properties and other factors in different regions. According to the Dutch Maliszewska-Kordybach grading standard, 79% of the soil samples from Chinese tea plantations were classified as unpolluted, 13% as mildly polluted, and 2% and 6% as moderately and severely polluted, respectively. Although the PAH pollution in tea plantations was generally low, BaP and InP pose significant ecological risk in some areas. Microplastics (MPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been found in all environment matrices and are of concern worldwide. In this study, PAHs were determined in Baiyangdian Lake, China, and the effects of MPs on the migration of PAHs at the lake interfaces were analyzed. The average abundances of detected MPs were 9595 items m -3 for water and 1023 items kg -1 for sediment. The detected MPs were polyamide 6, polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. The average Σ 16 PAHs in the water, sediment, and air were 1338 ng L -1 , 751 ng g -1 dry weight, and 395 ng m -3 , respectively. At the air-water interface, naphthalene, and phenanthrene volatilized from water to air, whereas benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, and dibenzo(a,h)anthracene deposited from air to water. The fugacity fraction between sediment and bottom water ranged from 0.88 to 0.99, which indicated net volatilization at the water-sediment interface. The adsorption capacities of the four MPs for the PAHs ranged from 39.4 to 99.8 μg g -1 with a desorption efficiency range of 0.01%-44.3% under oscillation. According to the distribution of PAHs on the MPs, the exchange fluxes of PAHs at the water-air and sediment-water interfaces were recalculated. This study investigated environmental distribution and human exposure of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives in one Chinese petroleum refinery facility. It was found that, following with high concentrations of 16 EPA PAHs (∑Parent-PAHs) in smelting subarea of studied petroleum refinery facility, total derivatives of PAHs [named as XPAHs, including nitro PAHs (NPAHs), chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs), and brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs)] in gas (mean= 1.57 × 10 4 ng/m 3 ), total suspended particulate (TSP) (mean= 4.33 × 10 3 ng/m 3 ) and soil (mean= 4.37 × 10 3 ng/g) in this subarea had 1.76-6.19 times higher levels than those from other subareas of this facility, surrounding residential areas and reference areas, indicating that petroleum refining processes would lead apparent derivation of PAHs. Especially, compared with those in residential and reference areas, gas samples in the petrochemical areas had higher ∑NPAH/∑PAHs (mean=2.18), but lower ∑Cl-PAH/∑PAHs (mean=1.43 × 10 -1 ) and ∑Br-PAH/∑PAHs ratios (mean=7.49 × 10 -2 ), indicating the richer nitrification of PAHs than chlorination during petrochemical process. The occupational exposure to PAHs and XPAHs in this petroleum refinery facility were 24-343 times higher than non-occupational exposure, and the ILCR (1.04 × 10 -4 ) for petrochemical workers was considered to be potential high risk. There have been reports of potential health risks for people from hydrophobic organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated hydrocarbons (PCHs), and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs). When a contaminated site is used for residential housing or public utility and recreation areas, the soil-bound organic pollutants might pose a threat to human health. In this study, we investigated the contamination profiles and potential risks to human health of 15 PAHs, 6 PCHs, and 12 OPFRs in soils from four contaminated sites in China. We used an in vitro method to determine the oral bioaccessibility of soil pollutants. Total PAHs were found at concentrations ranging from 26.4 ng/g to 987 ng/g. PCHs (0.27‒14.3 ng/g) and OPFRs (6.30‒310 ng/g) were detected, but at low levels compared to earlier reports. The levels of PAHs, PCHs, and OPFRs released from contaminated soils into simulated gastrointestinal fluids ranged from 1.74% to 91.0%, 2.51% to 39.6%, and 1.37% to 96.9%, respectively. Based on both spiked and unspiked samples, we found that the oral bioaccessibility of pollutants was correlated with their logK ow and molecular weight, and the total organic carbon content and pH of soils. PAHs in 13 out of 38 contaminated soil samples posed potential high risks to children. When considering oral bioaccessibility, nine soils still posed potential risks, while the risks in the remaining soils became negligible. Oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) have garnered significant scientific attention due to their heightened toxicity and mobility compared to their parent PAHs. This study investigated the occurrence of 11 OPAHs and 16 PAHs within agricultural ditch sediment of Guangzhou City, China. The ΣPAH and ΣOPAH concentrations ranged from 63.8-3955 ng/g and 16.5-522 ng/g, respectively. Notably, concentrations were elevated during the rainy season, attributed to intensified atmospheric deposition and surface runoff during the rainy season. Spatially, Pearson correlation and path analysis disclosed a linkage between OPAHs and high-molecular-weight PAHs and adjacent agricultural practices, whereas low-molecular-weight PAHs were associated with human and industrial operations. This disparity was linked to the restricted mobility of high-molecular-weight PAHs, rendering them particularly susceptible to proximal sources. Diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR) implicated fossil fuel combustion and vehicle emissions as major contributor to the sedimentary OPAHs and PAHs. Further correlations between estimated source contributions and water quality, strengthened by spatial interpolation, clearly identified agricultural activities, and atmospheric deposition associated with traffic emissions and fossil fuel combustion as primary contributor to sedimentary OPAHs and PAHs. Secondary sources encompassed coal combustion, road runoff, and wastewater from both industrial and shipping activities. The risk quotients (RQs) for PAH and OPAH mixtures indicated moderate to high ecological hazards. The vertical distribution, sources and influencing factors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil across ecosystem habitats were investigated around the Liaohe River Estuary (LRE) Wetland. The concentration of Ʃ 16 PAHs ranged from 41.0 to 435.4 ng g -1 dw, with a predominance of low molecular weight PAHs. Overall, PAHs and physicochemical properties of soil decreased with depth. Vegetation was found to increase soil PAHs. Additionally, soil physicochemical properties also regulated PAHs concentration, particularly for PAHs with high molecular weight. Among the habitats, total organic carbon was the key influencing factor for Suaeda heteroptera, while specific surface area was crucial for Phragmites australis. Results of characteristic ratio method and principal component analysis revealed that PAHs in LRE primarily originate petroleum, coal and biomass combustion. In summary, vegetation colonization significantly affected the distribution, sources, and controlling factors of PAHs. Microplastics (MPs) pollution has emerged as a global concern. To mitigate the potential threats by MPs, particularly to coastal regions, it is crucial to comprehend the environmental behavior of MPs and their affiliated chemicals. In the present study, we collected floating MPs using a Manta net (0.33 mm mesh size) in a one-year sampling event in 2022 from the eight major estuaries in the Pearl River Delta, China, and also from five coastal sites in August and December in the same year. Nineteen linear alkylbenzenes (∑ 19 LAB) and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (∑ 16 PAH) affiliated with MPs were measured. The mean concentrations of MPs-affiliated ∑ 19 LAB and ∑ 16 PAH were 6710 (range: 3400-12300) and 5310 (range: 817-19,600) ng g -1 , respectively, at the estuarine sites, and were 4920 (range: 2400-7600) and 2610 (range: 911-7890) ng g -1 , respectively, at the coastal sites. Significant correlations were found between logarithmic MPs-water partition coefficients (log K pw ) and logarithmic suspended particulate matter-water partition coefficients (log K d ) values for LABs and PAHs, indicating analogous partitioning dynamics for MPs and suspended particulate matter with water. The annual riverine outflows were 1170 and 414 g for ∑ 19 LAB and ∑ 16 PAH, respectively. Although the riverine outflows of LABs and PAHs carried by MPs remain negligible compared to those by suspended particulate matter, an upward trend was identified between 2018 and 2022. The Yellow River Delta (YRD) is the most complete wetland ecosystem in the warm temperate zone of China and is rich in oil resources. However, with petroleum extraction and the development of the economy, pollution of the YRD has been paid increasing attention, in particular, pollution via polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as they have caused great harm to human health and the ecosystem balance. Based on the investigations of a research group in 2009, this study re-collected samples according to the same sampling points and analyzed the concentration, composition, source, ecological risk and health risk of PAHs in 2021. The concentration of ΣPAH16 in the surface soil of YRD in 2009 ranged from 2.6 to 8275.46 ng/g, with an average of 1744.41 ng/g. The concentration of ΣPAH16 in 2021 ranged from 56.25 to 582.56 ng/g, with an average of 149.63 ng/g. Therefore, the pollution situation in the YRD in 2021 was significantly improved compared with 2009. The composition of PAHs in soil in 2009 and 2021 was similar, which was dominated by low-ring PAHs. The evaluation results of the toxicity equivalent factor method showed that there was no potential ecological risk in the soil in 2009 and 2021. The evaluation results of the lifetime cancer risk increment model showed that the incremental lifetime cancer risk models (ILCRs) of soil PAHs in 2009 and 2021 were lower than the safety threshold of 10−6; therefore, there was no carcinogenic risk. Purpose: Organic pollutants' transport, transformation, and biological effectiveness in soils depend mainly on their chemical forms. Therefore, in addition to studying the total content of pollutants, it is essential to understand the forms of organic pollutants in soils. In this study, we measured the speciations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including desorbing fraction, non-desorbing fraction, and bound residues, in soil samples from the Zhongliangshan karst terrain in Chongqing, southwest China. We also investigated the occurrence of PAHs in soils of the region. Moreover, we used principal component analysis (PCA) to analyze the relationship between soil properties and different speciations of PAHs in soils. The contents of ΣPAH16 ranged from 319.69–1215.64 ng/g, with a mean value of 615.02 ng/g. Desorbing fraction PAHs were significant, accounting for 34–81% of the total PAHs. The ratio of different speciations ordered as soluble > organic solvent extracted > bound residues. 2-3-ring were the major components of the total PAHs content in soils and desorbing fraction. PCA analysis determined that soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), and soil bulk density significantly affected the non-desorbing fraction, and pH and total organic carbon (TOC) had a significant positive correlation with the bound residues. The karst area is a complex and fragile ecosystem. The speciation of PAHs in soils is of great importance for assessing their risk and for remediation. However, most studies have focused on the concentration and distribution of PAHs in karst soils. Therefore, in this paper, we investigated the distribution of PAHs in soils in karst areas by investigating the distribution of different speciations of PAHs in soils. We also investigated the key factors influencing the distribution of different speciations. Materials and methods: Ten sites were selected in Zhongliangshan karst terrain, where 0–20 cm of soil was collected and the concentrations of 16 PAHs were measured. Three speciations of 16 PAHs in soils were extracted by sequential extraction. And the standard methods recommended by the Chinese Society of Soil Science were used to determine the basic soil properties. Result and discussion: In this study, we measured the speciation of PAHs in soil samples from the Zhongliangshan karst terrain in Chongqing, southwest China, including desorbing fraction, non-desorbing fraction, and bound residues. The total content of the 16 PAHs ranged from 319.69 to 1215.64 ng/g, with an average value of 615.02 ng/g. The desorbing fraction was significant, accounting for 34–81% of the total PAHs. The ratio of different speciations is ordered as desorbing fraction > non-desorbing fraction > bound residues. 2–3-ring were the major components of the total PAHs content in soils and each speciation. The PCA results show a significant effect of soil organic matter, TN, and soil bulk density on the non-desorbing fraction. pH and TOC had a relatively significant positive correlation with bound residues. Conclusions: This paper investigated the contamination status of PAHs in surface soils in the karst terrain of southwest China, and the speciation of PAHs. Under the special geological structure background in karst areas, studying the occurrence forms and influencing factors of PAHs pollutants in soils is of great significance for a deeper understanding of the occurrence forms of pollutants and effective control of their diffusion. The occurrence and trophic transfer of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aquatic ecosystems is vital to assess ecological risks. PAHs concentrations were analyzed in seawater, sediment, plankton, and marine species (15 fish species, 8 invertebrate species, 3 marine mammals), collected from Liaodong Bay (China). Bioaccumulation and biomagnification were calculated to demonstrate the biotransfer pattern of PAHs from the environmental matrix to high-level predators through the food web. Total PAHs concentrations ranged from 81.2 to 197.6 ng/L in seawater, 51.4-304.8 ng/g (dw) in sediment, and 65.3 to 28,885 ng/g (lw) in all biota samples. Three- and four-ring PAHs constituted major components (>81% in each case) of PAH congener profiles. Lower biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) and bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) values indicated limited bioaccumulation of PAHs within marine organisms. Also, 77% of biomagnification factors (BMF TL ) values of PAHs in spotted seal and finless porpoise were >1, whereas opposite transfer patterns of PAHs were observed in food webs with trophic values of 1.5-3.5 and 3.0-4.0; that is, trophic dilution (trophic magnification factor (TMF) < 1) and trophic magnification (TMF >1), respectively. This study investigated the occurrence status, sources, and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments from three typical mangrove areas in Guangxi Province, China. Results showed that the PAH content in the three studied regions ranged from 39.76 ng·g -1 to 164.93 ng·g -1 , and the average concentration was 92.87 ng·g -1 . The PAHs that were detected were mainly 3-ring and 4-ring. The source of PAHs, as traced by the diagnostic ratio method and principal component analysis, was mainly from combustion. A total of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in 28 soil column samples from two contaminated industrial sites in Eastern China. The total concentration of 16 PAHs (∑PAHs) in the surface soil (0–20 cm) was measured up to 52,600 ng/g (dry weight basis) with a remarkable spatial difference in the studied contaminated sites. The concentrations of the ∑PAHs in soils decreased with the increase in soil depth (0–10 m). The surface and subsurface soil presented a tenfold higher concentration than the soil with depth greater than 4 m. Additionally, the vertical migration tendency of the PAHs was found to be correlated significantly with their hydrophobicity (R2 = 0.79, P < 0.01). Naphthalene (with lowest octanol–water partition coefficient among the studied PAHs) showed the greatest average soil depth at which its peak concentration occurred. Furthermore, risk quotient analysis by using benzo[a]pyrene as reference compound showed that 71.4% of the samples exhibited high ecological risk for soil. Moreover, the total carcinogenic risk of the PAHs in the surface soil samples was assessed at 5.61 × 10–5–1.28 × 10–4 and 4.41 × 10–6–9.43 × 10–5 for male and female workers, respectively, in which 67.9%–71.4% of the samples showed potential risk. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the most concerning environmental pollutants due to their highly toxic, persistent and bioaccumulative properties. A total of 111 sediment samples were collected from shallow lakes along the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River in China for the determination of OCPs and PAHs. OCPs were detected in all of the sediment samples, with residual values ranging from 8.1 ng g−1 dw to 202.9 ng g−1 dw, and the residual values of PAHs ranged from 11.8 ng g−1 dw to 231. 9 ng g−1 dw. Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were the major components, accounting for 29.1% ± 18.7% and 21.1% ± 14.3% of the total OCPs and mostly originating from historical use. Similar compositions of PAHs were observed with 3-, 4-, and 5-ringed congeners as the major contributors accounting for 86.0% ± 10.0% of the identified PAHs. Diagnostic ratios of typical PAHs demonstrated mixed sources from petroleum/petrogenic and combustion processes, which were responsible for the PAHs observed in surface sediments from the studied lakes. A sediment risk assessment based on sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) suggested that heptachlor epoxide, p, p′-DDD and lindane could be potential contaminants of greater ecotoxicological concern. Historical chlor-alkali production has led to substantial concentrations of persistent organic pollutant residues in the environment. This study systematically investigated the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chlorinated/brominated-PAHs (Cl/Br-PAHs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) in sediment, lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), and fish samples from Ya-Er Lake, which is a site in China with historical chlor-alkali contamination. The average concentrations [(4.97-1.47) × 10 3  ng/g dry weight (dw)] of these pollutants in backfill sediments, which were dredged from the lake after chlor-alkali production stopped, were 2.68-70.87 times those in fresh lake sediments (0.622-218 ng/g dw) and reported concentrations in other areas. Correlation analyses indicated that Cl-PAHs, Br-PAHs, and PCNs likely originated from halogenation of parent PAHs in the study area, and the chlorination ratios were larger than those of bromination. The Cl (1/2/3) -PAHs/PAHs and Br (1) -PAHs/PAHs ratios were higher than those for PAHs with more halogen atoms. This contamination extended into the biota, with notable pollutant burdens found in lotus (Nelumbo nucifera, 0.305-77.3 ng/g dw) and even higher concentrations in fish (2.20-345 ng/g lipid weight). Estimated biological soil accumulation factors revealed significant enrichment in lotus organs (mean: 7.19) and fish muscle (mean: 10.65), especially the latter, which highlighted bioaccumulation and potential food chain transfer risks. The estimated daily intakes of PAHs, Cl/Br-PAHs, and HCBD through fish consumption currently pose negligible risks, while dietary intake of PCNs may present health concerns. Chinese traditional smoked pork was contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and chlorinated and brominated PAHs (ClPAHs and BrPAHs; XPAHs) during the smoking process. Therefore, our study investigated the concentrations, enrichment characteristics, and health risks associated with PAHs, as well as ClPAHs and BrPAHs in Chinese traditional smoked pork. The total concentrations of PAHs, ClPAHs and BrPAHs in traditional smoked pork ranged from 90.0 to 79200 ng/g fat weight (fw), 23.6-2340 pg/g fw and 0.550-200 pg/g fw, respectively, which were significantly higher than their levels found in raw pork. Additionally, the concentrations of PAHs and XPAHs in the surface of smoked pork were higher than those in the inner parts. High-ring PAHs exhibited a greater enrichment compared to low-ring PAHs, and BrPAHs exhibited greater enrichment ability than ClPAHs in smoked pork. Furthermore, the ability of individual congeners to migrate from the surface to the inner parts of the smoked pork were varied. When the smoking fuels were similar, a longer smoking time resulted in higher concentrations of PAHs and XPAHs in smoked pork, while casing effectively reduced their concentrations. The correlation between XPAH and parent PAH concentrations indicated that chlorination of PAHs was one of the primary formation mechanisms of some monochlorinated PAHs. Over half of the smoked pork samples posed a potential carcinogenic risk, particularly the surface samples. The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted human activities and the environment globally. The lockdown measures have led to significant changes in industrial activities, transportation, and human behavior. This study investigates how the lockdown measures influenced the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediments of Chaohu Lake, a semi-enclosed lake. Surface sediment samples were collected in summer of 2020 (lockdown have just been lifted) and 2022 and analyzed for 16 priority PAHs. The range of ΣPAHs concentrations remained similar between 2020 (158.19-1693.64 ng·g -1 ) and 2022 (148.86-1396.54 ng·g -1 ). Among the sampling sites, the west lake exhibited similar PAHs concentrations characteristics over the two years, with higher levels observed in areas near Hefei City. However, the east lake exhibited increased ΣPAHs concentrations in 2022 compared to 2020, especially the area near ship factory. PAHs source analysis using principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR) revealed an increased proportion of petroleum combustion sources in 2022 compared to 2020. The isotope analysis results showed that organic matter (OM) sources in the western lake remained relatively stable over the two years, with sewage discharge dominating. In contrast, the eastern lake experienced a shift in OM sources from sewage to C3 plants, potentially contributing to the increased PAH levels observed in the eastern lake sediments. Ecological risk assessment revealed low to moderate risk in both 2020 and 2022. Health risk evaluation indicated little difference in incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values between the two years, with only benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) posing a high risk among the carcinogenic PAHs. Enhanced anthropogenic activity strength has altered the watershed particulate transport and material cycle resulting in organic pollutant deposition changes in Dongting Lake associated with unclear ecological risk. In the present study, dual biomarkers i.e. n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) were applied in the 210 Pb-dated sediment cores for traceability of centennial organic pollutants in the lake mouth area. The partial least squares path model and risk quotients method were used to explore the controlling pathways and ecological risk. The results show a range of sedimentary organic carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) was at 1.76-185.66, 0.97-89.80, and 0.01-0.97 g m -2  yr -1 with total reserves of 51.68, 18.44, and 0.27 t ha -1 , respectively, over the past 179 years. The presence of PAHs rapidly increased by 2.47 fold from 535.60 ng g -1 , while PAHs and carcinogenic PAHs (ΣCPAHs) burial fluxes increased by about 6 and 5 folds, respectively. Accompanied by anthropogenic activities and climate change, the exotic sources gradually becoming predominant. The n-alkane diagnostic ratios indicated a shift of organic matter (OM) from autotrophic bacteria, algae, and phytoplankton-derived sources to macrophyte and terrestrial plants. The exotic origins rose to approximately 73.61 %, while endogenous sources decreased to 26.39 %. The direct effects of anthropogenic activities and their indirect negative impacts on climate and sedimentary structure are the key ways for sediment material loading. The nutrient accumulation in sediments coincides with the lake's eutrophication history over the past decades. The ΣCPAHs accounted for about 89.37 ± 17.14 % of the total TEQ, reflecting a strong ecological risk. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are highly concerning environmental pollutants due to their toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. In this paper, concentrations and compositions of 16 United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) priority control PAHs in the fish collected from four lakes in central and eastern China were analyzed. 18 species of fish were collected from four typical lakes, namely Taihu Lake, Danjiangkou Reservoir, Yuncheng Salt Lake, and Nansi Lake. Quantitative analysis of PAHs were carried out with gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, and 13 out of 16 PAHs were identified, with the main components being pyrene, chrysene, naphthalene, and benzo(b)fluoranthene. The accumulation of PAHs in fish from Taihu Lake, Danjiangkou Reservoir, Yuncheng Salt Lake, and Nansi Lake was 28.75-47.27, 26.60-31.93, 33.56-39.30, and 27.22-43.01 ng·g -1 , respectively. The toxic equivalents of high-cyclic PAHs in fish of the four lakes were significantly higher than those of low-cyclic and middle-cyclic PAHs (P < 0.05). In Taihu Lake, Danjiangkou Reservoir, and Nansi Lake, the toxicity equivalents were predominantly contributed by benzo[a] pyrene (BaP), while in Yuncheng Salt Lake, dibenzo(a,h) anthracene (DahA) was the main contributor. The residents in central and eastern China exposed to PAHs had a negligible non-cancer risk (non-carcinogenic risk values <1) and a potential low cancer risk. It was noteworthy that the Pleuronichthys cornutus and Lateolabrax japonicus from Yuncheng Salt Lake could pose carcinogenic risks (>10 -4 ) to humans, with benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) having the highest risk contribution rate. Source analysis indicated that the main source of PAHs in fish was combustion sources. BaP, DahA, and BbF could become potential pollutants of concern in the field of ecotoxicology. The construction of dams has caused disruptions to river connectivity, leading to alterations in the deposition of hydrophobic organic contaminants in reservoir sediments. Further investigation is warranted to explore the impact of cascade reservoirs with differing hydrological characteristics on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) distribution in sediment. This study examines the presence of 30 PAHs in the sediments collected from six cascade reservoirs situated in the Wujiang River basin during January and July 2017. The results showed that Σ30 PAHs ranged from 455-3000 ng/g dw (mean 1030 ng/g dw). Anthropogenic activities and reservoir hydrology determined the distribution trend of PAHs in sediments, with an overall increase from upstream to midstream and then a decrease downstream. The PAH levels were highly linked to the secondary industry (P < 0.05). This was further supported by the relationship between the PAH emissions from coal combustion and traffic sources analyzed by the positive matrix factorization model and economic parameters in the wet season (P < 0.01). At the same time, reservoir age (RA) showed a positive correlation with PAH concentrations (P < 0.05), while hydraulic retention time (HRT) exhibited a negative correlation with PAH levels (P = 0.03). The relationship between total organic carbon (TOC) and PAHs in stream sediments worldwide was nonlinear (P < 0.01), with PAH concentrations initially rising and then falling as TOC levels increased. A total of 32 surface sediment samples were collected from the East China Sea (ECS) to investigate the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the surface sediments and evaluate their sources. The content of PAHs in the ECS surface sediments ranged from 2.3 ng/g to 57.8 ng/g. The source analysis revealed that the combustion of such fuels as petroleum is the main contribution source of PAHs in the ECS surface sediments, and oil spill is another important contribution source. The distribution characteristics and risk levels of PAHs in surface sediment in the Honghai Bay of China are studied in this paper. The results showed that the concentration of total PAHs in this area ranged from 100.65 ng·g -1 to 241.31 ng·g -1 , with an average concentration of 158.83 ng·g -1 . The tricyclic PAHs were the main components in the detected PAHs. PAH pollution levels in this region were low and moderate as compared with adjacent areas. Traceability results showed that the sediment PAHs mainly originate from coal and biomass combustion. PAHs concentrations at some stations were above the Environmental Quality Reference Level. We investigated the contaminations of phthalates (PAEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the vegetables and their corresponding soils from 26 plastic greenhouses of Northeast China. PAEs, OPEs, and PAHs in the edible portion of vegetables were in the range of 2620-21800, 115-852, and 32.4-602 ng/g, while the levels of these chemicals in the greenhouse soils were 5770-18800, 196-935, and 109-1600 ng/g, respectively. PAEs are the main organic pollutants in greenhouses, which were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that of OPEs and PAHs. Leafy vegetables showed the highest contamination level, which is ∼1-3 times that of root and fruit vegetables. Bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of chemicals are significantly negatively correlated with their physicochemical properties, e.g., octanol-water partition coefficient and organic carbon partition coefficient. The partition-limited model can accurately predict the contamination level of greenhouse vegetables to a certain extent based on the chemical's concentration in the corresponding soil. We assessed the hazard quotients of target compounds through daily intake of greenhouse vegetables, and found a low risk for di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. The exploration of sediment pollution caused by PAHs and its impact on microbial communities can provide valuable insights for the remediation of sediments. The spatial distribution of PAHs and their impact on the microbial community within the Pearl River Estuary were investigated in this study. The findings revealed that the total concentration ranges of 16 PAHs were between 24.26 and 3075.93 ng/g, with naphthalene, fluorene, and phenanthrene potentially exerting adverse biological effects. More PAHs were found to accumulate in subsurface sediments, and their average accumulation rates gradually decreased as the number of rings in PAHs increased, ranging from 180 % for 2-ring to 36 % for 6-ring. The phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi were found to dominate both surface and subsurface sediments The correlation between microbial genera and PAHs contents was weak in sediments with low levels of PAHs contamination, while a more significant positive relationship was observed in sediments with high levels of PAHs contamination. The physicochemical properties of sediments, such as pH, soil structure and Cu significantly influence bacterial community composition in highly contaminated sediments. Additionally, the network analysis revealed that certain bacterial genera, including Novosphingobium, Robiginitalea and Synechococcus&#95;CC9902, played a pivotal role in the degradation of PAHs. The impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the marine food web is crucially understudied in the primary trophic system. We evaluated the seasonal dynamics of PAHs in microplankton in a polluted environment (Taiwan), northeastern South China Sea. Replicate size-fractionated microplankton (55-1000 μm) were freeze-dried, and PAHs were extracted with a 1:1 v/v ratio of acetone: n-hexane, then analyzed using GC-MS. Total PAHs ranged between 68 and 2548 ng/g dw in microplankton, greatest during spring (130-2548 ng/g), followed by autumn (135-772 ng/g) and summer (44-423 ng/g). Spatial distribution varied through seasons but was higher in the southern part (S6 > S4 > S5 > S2 > S3 > S1 > S7), dominated by higher-ring PAHs from mixed pyrogenic and petrogenic sources. PAHs are significantly correlated with environmental factors, especially in colder seasons and lower salinity areas. Surface sediment samples were collected from the surrounding sea areas of the two largest tourist islands in Sanya City, China, to compare and assess the sources, distribution, and ecological risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total PAHs concentrations ranged from 31.16 to 163.3 ng/g, with an average concentration of 102.46 ng/g, which is still lower than the levels detected in most other sediment studies worldwide. PAHs from coal combustion (Flu, Pyr, Fl, Phe) showed positive correlations with TOC, Silt, and Clay, indicating that these PAHs are easily adsorbed in muddy and silty sediments. Sanya Bay is primarily composed of mud and silt, whereas Haitang Bay is mainly sandy. This corresponds to the significantly higher concentrations of Fl, Phe, and Pyr in Sanya Bay compared to Haitang Bay. The main industrial activities in the study area are related to power and heat production and supply. The results indicate that the primary sources of sediment PAHs are high-temperature combustion during heavy industrial production, followed by maritime transportation and petroleum sources. Overall, the PAHs pollution levels in the study area range from slight to moderate. Sediment quality assessments show that only Ace and Phe have higher individual risk values. Six stations in Sanya Bay have higher adverse impact risks, while in Haitang Bay, only HT07 poses a high risk to biological impact. In order to investigate the pollution status and sedimentary records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediments of Houguan Lake in Wuhan, this study collected 7 surface sediment samples and 1 sedimentary column sample in September 2020. The sedimentary column chronological sequence of the Lake was constructed using a combined 210Pb and 137Cs dating method. The content of 16 optimized PAHs was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the source of PAHs was analyzed using characteristic ratio method. The results showed that the average concentration of PAHs in the surface sediment was (247.90±32.01) ng/g, belonging to a moderate pollution level, with 3 and 4 ring PAHs being the main pollutants, and there was no significant difference in spatial distribution. The sedimentation rate of the sedimentary column is 0.73 cm/a, and the collected sedimentary column can reflect the sedimentation process in the past 160 years. The average content of 16 PAHs in the sedimentary column is 56.84 ng/g, indicating a low pollution level. According to the composition characteristics of PAHs, the sedimentation process is divided into four stages. The composition characteristics of PAHs in different stages differ significantly, reflecting the transformation of energy structure in different historical periods. Before the 21st century, there was a significant positive correlation between the content of PAHs and socio-economic indicators such as GDP and permanent population. In recent years, the content of PAHs have been mainly affected by meteorological conditions such as evaporation and temperature, indicating that with China' s emphasis on ecological civilization construction, Wuhan has achieved certain results in ecological environment protection. The issue of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been an environmental focus worldwide. In this study, the contents, sources, and ecological risks of sixteen PAHs in the sediment of Baiyang Lake were estimated, and a list of priority pollutants was established. The total PAH contents ranged from 114 to 1010 ng·g−1. The composition of PAHs indicated that 4- to 6-ring PAHs predominated in the sediment samples. The diagnostic ratio analysis showed that combustion sources were predominant for PAHs in Baiyang Lake. Specifically, the positive matrix factorization model indicated that diesel engine emissions, gasoline engine emissions, wood combustion sources, and coal combustion sources contributed 22, 32, 24, and 22% of ∑PAHs, respectively. Based on the sediment quality guidelines, mean effects range median quotient, ecological risk quotient, and toxicity equivalent quotient methods, the comprehensive assessment results of PAHs in Baiyang Lake sediments indicated that the ecological risks were at medium and low levels. This study systematically analyzed the contents, compositions, and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in river sediments near an important energy and chemical base in northwest China. In addition, their possible adverse effects on the ecology and human health were assessed. The PAH concentrations in this study area ranged from 2641.28 to 16783.72 (ng/g dw). PAHs of medium molecular weight (3-ring and 4-ring) showed the largest proportion, followed by PAHs of higher molecular weight (5-ring and 6-ring). The results of molecular diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis revealed that PAHs in the region have complex sources, with incomplete combustion of local fossil fuels and traffic exhaust factors being the main sources. The total toxic equivalent concentration of PAHs varied from 10.05 to 760.26 ng/g, and according to the sediment quality guidelines, PAHs have high potential ecological risk in the lower reaches of the river. The mean effect range-median quotient for the region was 0.46, and the combined ecological risk was at moderate to high levels (21% probability of toxicity). The lifetime carcinogenic risks for adults and children exposed to PAHs were 2.95 × 10−3 and 1.87 × 10−2, respectively, which are much higher than the limit of 10−4, indicating moderate to high potential cancer risks. Therefore, the local government should consider taking some environmental remediation measures. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution in the soil of industrial legacy sites is a prominent problem when reusing urban land. To estimate the potential risks of PAHs, this study investigated 16 priority PAHs in the soil at different depths in a typical decommissioned industrial site in Tianjin. PAH concentrations were determined via gas chromatography-(tandem) quadrupole mass spectrometry. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) assessment was applied to assess the potential risks to the population after land reconstruction. The total concentrations of PAHs in the soil at different depths ranged from 38.3 ng·g−1 to 1782.5 ng·g−1, which were below the risk control standard for soil contamination of development land (GB 36600-2018). Low-ring (two-three ring) PAHs exhibit a dominant component, and the variations in PAH compositions were closely related to the former production units and soil properties. Compared to silty clay layers, PAHs tended to accumulate in the permeable miscellaneous fill layers. Incremental lifetime cancer risk assessment values associated with different exposure pathways for children, adolescents, and adults were calculated. The results showed potential carcinogenic risks for people of varying ages in this area, but they were still acceptable. The knowledge of the spatial distribution, sources, and air–soil exchange of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in an oilfield area is essential to the development of effective control practices of PAC pollution. In this study, 48 passive air samples and 24 soil samples were collected during 2018–2019 in seven functional areas (e.g., urban, oil field, suburban, industrial, agricultural, near pump units, and background) in the Yellow River Delta (YRD) where the Shengli Oilfield is located, and 18 parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and five alkylated-PAHs (APAHs) were analyzed from all the air and soil samples. The ΣPAHs in the air and soil ranged from 2.26 to 135.83 ng/m3 and 33.96 to 408.94 ng/g, while the ΣAPAHs in the atmosphere and soil ranged from 0.04 to 16.31 ng/m3 and 6.39 to 211.86 ng/g, respectively. There was a downward trend of atmospheric ΣPAH concentrations with increasing the distance from the urban area, while both ΣPAH and ΣAPAH concentrations in the soil decreased with distance from the oilfield area. PMF analyses show that for atmospheric PACs, coal/biomass combustion was the main contributor in urban, suburban, and agricultural areas, while crude production and processing source contributes more in the industrial and oilfield area. For PACs in soil, densely populated areas (industrial, urban, and suburban) are more affected by traffic sources, while oilfield and near-pump unit areas are under the impact of oil spills. The fugacity fraction ( f f ) results indicated that the soil generally emitted low-molecular-weight PAHs and APAHs and act as a sink for high-molecular-weight PAHs. There is considerable inconsistency in results pertaining to the biomagnification of PAHs in aquatic systems. Zooplankton specifically play an important role controlling the fate and distribution of organic contaminants up the food chain, particularly in large plateau reservoirs. However, it remains largely unknown how secondary factors affect the magnification of organic compounds in zooplankton. The present study assessed plankton species and nutrients affecting the trophic transfer of PAHs through the micro-food chain in plateau reservoirs, Guizhou Province China. Results show soluble ∑PAHs range from 99.9 - 147.3 ng L -1 , and concentrations of ∑PAHs in zooplankton range from 1003.2 - 22441.3, with a mean of 4460.7 ng g -1 dw. Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) > 1 show biomagnifications of PAHs from phytoplankton to zooplankton. The main mechanisms for trophic magnification > 1 are 1) small Copepoda, Cladocera and Rotifera are prey for larger N. schmackeri and P. tunguidus, and 2) the δ 15 N and TLs of zooplankton are increasing with the increasing nutrients TN, NO 3 - and COD Mn . As a result, log PAHs concentrations in zooplankton are positively correlated with the trophic levels (TLs) of zooplankton, and log BAFs of the PAHs in zooplankton are increasing with increasing TLs and log K ow . Temperature further enhances TMFs and biomagnifications of PAHs as noted by temperature related reductions in δ 15 N. There are also available soluble PAHs in the water column which are assimilated with increasing phytoplankton biomass within the taxa groups, diatoms, dinoflagellates and chlorophytes. Notable TMFs of PAHs in zooplankton in Guizhou plateau reservoirs are not significantly affected by phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass dilutions. Seawater warming, ocean acidification and chemical pollution are the main threats to coral growth and even survival. The legacy persistent organic contaminants (POCs), such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and the emerging contaminants, including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), dechlorane plus (DPs) and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) were studied in corals from Luhuitou fringing reef in Sanya Bay and Yongle atoll in Xisha Islands, the South China Sea (SCS). Total average concentrations of ∑ 16 PAHs, ∑ 23 OCPs, ∑ 34 PCBs, ∑ 8 PBDEs, ∑ 2 DPs and ∑ 5 NBFRs in 20 coral species (43 samples) from the SCS were 40.7 ± 34.6, 5.20 ± 5.10, 0.197 ± 0.159, 3.30 ± 3.70, 0.041 ± 0.042 and 36.4 ± 112 ng g -1 dw, respectively. PAHs and NBFRs were the most abundant compounds and they are likely to be dangerous pollutants for future coral growth. Compared to those found in other coral reef regions, these pollutants concentrations in corals were at low to median levels. Except for PBDEs, POCs in massive Porites were significantly higher than those in branch Acropora and Pocillopora (p < 0.01), as large, closely packed corals may be beneficial for retaining more pollutant. Halogenated organic contaminants, such as chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs), are some of the most important emerging environmental pollutants. However, empirical data on Cl/Br-PAHs in estuarine and marine ecosystems are limited, rendering assessments of Cl/Br-PAH contamination in estuarine and offshore environments uncertain. Here the occurrence, sources, and ecological risks of 7 Cl-PAHs and 18 Br-PAHs were determined in surface sediments of the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE), a highly urbanized and industrialized area, and its adjacent marine area. The concentrations of Cl-PAHs ranged from 4.50 to 18.38 ng g -1 (average 7.19 ng g -1 ), while those of Br-PAHs ranged from 4.80 to 61.18 ng g -1 (average 14.11 ng g -1 ). The dominant Cl-PAH and Br-PAH in surface sediment were 9-chlorofluorene (17.79%) and 9-bromofluorene (58.49%), respectively. The distributions and compositions of Cl/Br-PAHs in the surface sediments varied considerably due to complex hydrodynamic and depositional conditions in the YRE and its adjacent marine area, as well as differences in physicochemical properties of different Cl/Br-PAHs. Positive matrix factorization revealed that the primary sources of Cl/Br-PAHs in the study area were e-waste dismantling (33.6%), waste incineration (23.2%), and metal smelting (11.0%). Little information is known regarding how the lagged pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) influenced the environment and human health after an e-waste dismantling site was rebuilt. This study investigated the characteristics, sources, and risk assessment of PAHs in a rebuilt e-waste site and its surrounding farmland by analyzing the samples of soil, dust, water, and vegetable. Concentrations of PAHs in soil, vegetable and water in the rebuilt site were relatively higher than in its surrounding farmland. The concentrations in surface soils, soil columns, dust, vegetables, and water varied from 55.4 to 3990 ng g -1 , 1.65 to 5060 ng g -1 , 2190 to 2420 ng g -1 , 2670 to 10,300 ng g -1 , and 46.8 to 110 μg L -1 in the e-waste site, respectively. On the farmland, PAH concentrations in surface soils, vegetables, and water ranged from 41.5 to 2760 ng g -1 , 506 to 7640 ng g -1 , and 56.6 to 89.2 μg L -1 , respectively. A higher proportion of high-molecular-weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) appeared in all multimedia compared with low-molecular-weight PAHs (LMW-PAHs). Diagnostic ratio together with positive matrix factorization (PMF) revealed that vehicle emission was the primary source in this area, and the activity of e-waste disposal was another important source in the rebuilt e-waste site. Based on the deterministic health risks, people working in the reconstructed e-waste site were exposed to low risks, whereas the residents living near the surrounding farmland were exposed to low risk. Sensitivity analyses indicated that exposure frequency and PAH concentrations were the main factors that influenced exposure risk. Sansha and Luoyuan Bay are influenced by different industrial structure, but the sources and pollution status of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), especially alkylated PAHs, are poorly understood. We studied 25 PAHs in surface sediments from the two bays. The results showed that PAHs concentrations in Sansha and Luoyuan Bay sediment range from 6.54 to 479.28 ng/g and 118.82 to 2984.09 ng/g, respectively. Alkylated PAHs dominated in Sansha (48.86 % of Σ 25 PAHs), while 3-ring PAHs dominated in Luoyuan (36.32 % of ∑ 25 PAHs). Results of sources analysis indicated oil spills as the main PAHs source in Sansha, and domestic emissions and fossil fuel combustion in Luoyuan. Ecological risk assessment of showed low sediment risk, but in Luoyuan was higher than in Sansha. Compared with Luoyuan Bay, Sansha Bay emits less industrial pollutants, so the pollution is lower than Luoyuan Bay. In this study, the concentrations of 16 kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of Daya Bay were determined and analyzed. Results showed that 16 PAHs were detected in all the samples, and the total PAH concentration ranged from 70.18 to 128.04 ng g−1, with an average of 103.17 ng g−1. The cyclic number distribution of PAHs in the sediments was mainly 4 and 5 rings. Six classic PAH ratios named Ant/(Ant + Phe), Fla/(Fla + Pyr), [InP/(InP + BghiP)], [BaA/(BaA + Chr)], BaA/BghiP, and LMW/HMW, and principal component analyses showed that the main source of PAHs in this region was combustion (biomass, coal, and petroleum combustion), and the secondary source was petroleum. The ecological risk analysis of PAHs by using effect range low/median method and mean effects range-median quotient method showed that all of PAHs are lower than the effect range low (ERL) level and the effects range-median quotient (M-ERM-Q) value of all stations is 0.0027–0.0067, with an average value of 0.0046. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are typical toxic organic pollutants that can accumulate in sediments and may be toxic to aquatic organisms. In the present study, the contamination level, composition pattern, and sources of sixteen PAHs listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency were investigated in surface sediments and a sediment core from Daihai Lake, which is located in a typical semiarid area of Inner Mongolia, China, and the ecological risk of these PAHs was assessed. The results show that the total concentration of PAHs in the surface sediments ranged from 204.6 to 344.5 ng/g with an average value of 287.2 ng/g and that compared with other aquatic systems, the level of PAHs in the sediments from Daihai Lake was low. However, a general upward trend was observed for the concentrations of PAHs in the sediment core, which might be related to the increase in human activities in the area. Moreover, the PAH concentrations were significantly positively correlated with the total organic carbon (TOC) content in the sediments, and it is thus inferred that TOC regulates the distribution of PAHs in Daihai Lake. Three-ring and four-ring PAHs were found to be predominant in all the sediment samples, and phenanthrene (Phe) was the most abundant compound. According to the composition of PAHs and the anthracene (Ant)/(Ant+Phe) or fluoranthene (Flt)/(Flt+pyrene (Pyr)) ratios, the PAHs in Daihai Lake mainly originated from the combustion of domestic coal, grass, and wood, and petroleum cannot be ignored as a source considering the growth of industry. Risk assessment based on a comparison of PAH concentrations and the effect range low (ERL) and effect range median (ERM) values demonstrated that acenaphthene (Ace) at 11 sites and fluorene (Flu) at 7 sites had occasional adverse biological effects. Coal gangue is a by-product of coal, the output of which is as high as 30% of raw coal, whereas only 30% of it is recycled. The leftover remains in the environment from gangue backfilling areas and overlap with residential, agricultural, and industrial areas. Coal gangue accumulated in the environment is easily weathered and oxidized and becomes a source of various pollutants. In this paper, 30 coal gangue samples (fresh and weathered coal gangues) were collected from three mine areas in Huaibei, Anhui province, China. Gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) was used to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze thirty polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), including 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (16PAHs), preferentially controlled by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), and the corresponding alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (a-PAHs). The results showed that PACs existed objectively in coal gangue, and the content of a-PAHs was higher than that of 16PAHs (average values for 16PAHs ranged from 77.8 to 581 ng/g; average values for a-PAHs ranged from 97.4 to 3179 ng/g). Moreover, coal types not only affected the content and type of PACs but also affected the distribution pattern of a-PAHs at different substitution sites. With the increase of gangue weathering degree, the composition of a-PAHs kept changing; the low ring a-PAHs were more easily diffused to the environment, and the high ring a-PAHs remained enriched in the weathered coal gangue. The correlation analysis showed that the correlation between fluoranthene (FLU) and alkylated fluoranthene (a-FLU) was as high as 94%, and the calculated ratios were not more than 1.5. The basic conclusion is that not only 16PAHs and a-PAHs objectively existed in the coal gangue, but also the characteristic compound belonging to the pollution source of coal gangue oxidation have been discovered. The corresponding relationships between temperature, precipitation, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration in a typical ombrotrophic peatland in Dajiuhu, Shennongjia, were quantitatively characterized by field sampling tests validated with simulation experiments. The PAH concentrations of peat cores in Dajiuhu peatland ranged from 262 to 977 ng·g−1, with a mean value of 536 ± 284 ng·g−1. PAHs were mainly composed of 2–3 ring PAHs, accounting for 31.7% ± 2.00% and 31.7% ± 5.00%, respectively. The concentration of PAHs in peat cores showed a significant decrease with increasing temperature, while the low molecular weight PAHs (LMW-PAHs) were more sensitive to temperature changes compared to the high molecular weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs). Besides, with the increase of quantity and velocity of leaching liquid, PAHs in peat were first transferred in the form of attached large-size particles and then gradually entered the aqueous phase. According to the IPCC projections of global warming, Dajiuhu peatland will release 956 ± 26.3 kg·°C−1 PAHs into gas phase during 2030–2052, and a conservative projection based on local temperature trends showed that 459 ± 12.6 kg·°C−1 PAHs will be released into gas phase by 2047 in Dajiuhu peatland. The projected release fluxes of PAHs in Dajiuhu peatland with precipitation volume and precipitation velocity are 381 ± 201 kg·100 mm−1 and 1052 ± 167 kg·min·mL−1, respectively, which are primarily from peat into particulate and aqueous phase. In this study, the sedimentary records, sources, and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Dianchi Lake were analyzed. The concentrations of ΣPAH16 in the sediments of Dianchi Lake ranged from 368 to 990 ng/g, with an average value of 572 ng/g, peaking in 1988. Economic development, rapid population growth, and rapid growth of coal consumption have a greater impact on the HMW (high molecular weight) PAHs than on the LMW (low molecular weight) PAHs in the sedimentary environment. The results of the diagnostic ratios and PCA (principal component analysis) model show that the main sources of PAHs were coal and biomass combustion, as well as the fossil fuel combustion in individual years. The risk assessment results showed that the PAH concentrations in the sediment were within a safe range. In the past 100 years of sediment pore water, other 2–3 ring LMW PAHs were within a safe range (except for Phe, which reached chronic toxic pollution levels in some years). With an increase in industrialization and urbanization, the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum has increased, and some of the 4–6 ring HMW PAHs have reached chronic toxicity or even acute toxicity in the sediment pore water. The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution in Taihu Lake Basin has caused widespread concern. However, the spatial temporal distribution of PAHs in the upstream rivers of Taihu Lake Basin remains largely unknown. Thus, this study aims to investigate the level, spatial distribution, sources, and environment risk caused by PAHs in upstream rivers of Taihu Lake Basin. The concentrations of total 16 PAHs (∑16PAHs) ranged from 188.64 to 1060.39 ng/g, with an average of 472.62 ng/g. High-molecular-weight (HMW) PAHs were the predominant compounds in most sample sites. The results of source analysis demonstrated that the PAH pollution was mainly sourced from mixture of combustion and direct petroleum spillage. The ecological risk assessment showed that moderate ecological risk caused by the PAH contaminants might occur in most sample sites. The incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) ranged from 2.07 ×10−4 − 2.66 × 10−3 for children and 9.66 ×10−5 − 1.24 × 10−3 for adult, indicating moderate cancer risk of PAH-contaminated sediments. The Hexi Corridor is the main commodity grain base in northwest China and plays a special role in ensuring food security in northwest China. However, the multiple pollution transport pathways of PAHs and complex and co-existing potential pollution sources around the study areas require a combination of pollution status, source identification, and risk assessment to explore pollution distribution and potential risks. In this study, the total PAHs concentration (∑18PAHs) in soils ranged from 69.6 to 1300 ng/g. Spatially, the higher content of PAHs was detected in the Jinchang, followed by Jiayuguan, Jiuquan, Wuwei, and Zhangye, indicating a remarkable influence of different industrial activities. Although high-molecular-weight PAHs were predominated, the compositions of PAHs in most of the soil samples were varied. The isomer ratios of PAHs and principal component analysis were also revealed the PAHs probably originate from the sources different significantly. The agricultural area adjacent to highways experienced high threat ofpersistent organic pollutants (POPs), which are fromvehicle exhaust, asphalt, and tyre wear.To analyze the presence, distribution patterns, ecological risk and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), soil samples were collected in farmland along a highway in Jilin province, China and analyzed for 16 PAHs. The concentration of ∑16PAHs in soil at traffic sites ranged from 781.83-3659.21 ng/g dry weight with the mean value of 2263.78 ng/g, respectively.The PAHs patterns were generally dominated by the high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs, which represented about 65.82% of the total PAHs in traffic sites and 53.52% in control sites of the total 16 PAHs in soil samples. The sources of PAHs in soilwere mainly contaminated by mixed petroleum and combustion. Ecological risk assessment indicated that there were18.33% of the soil samples belong to Moderate-risk 2, and 81.67% of soil samples belong to High-risk. The concentrations, distribution, possible sources, and potential risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface soils were studied in Kunming, which is situated in a lake basin of the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau. 15 PAHs were analyzed in 40 surface soil samples (0–5 cm layer) collected from six types of land uses in the Kunming urban area. Meanwhile, the potential sources of PAHs in surface soils of Kunming were investigated by PAH composition ratios, isomer ratios, and principal component analysis (PCA). The total concentrations of 15 PAHs ranged from 101.64 to 6,208.25 ng/g (dry weight basis). The concentrations in different land uses increased in an order as: green space (541.43 ng/g) < education area (756.49 ng/g) < business area (810.17 ng/g) < residential area (1,034.36 ng/g) < industrial area (1,166.79 ng/g) < roadside greens (2,146.76 ng/g). The results of sources identification suggested that PAHs in surface soils of the Kunming urban area were greatly affected by combustion activities which came mainly from coal combustion and vehicular traffic. In addition, the toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) were used to estimate benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent concentration in surface soils of Kunming, and the risk level of PAHs in Kunming's urban surface soils was low as a whole. The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and halogenated PAHs (HPAHs) in surface soils from the petroleum industrial area of the Yellow River Delta (YRD) in China were investigated. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs ranged from 19.6 to 1560 ng/g, while 22 HPAHs ranged from 2.44 to 14.9 ng/g. Moreover, a high degree of spatial distribution heterogeneity was observed for both PAHs and HPAHs, which is likely attributed to the distinct industrial activities in studied area. The combustion of biomass and petroleum were identified as primary sources of soil PAHs and HPAHs in the YRD. Furthermore, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene exhibited high ecological risks (with risk quotients of 1.47, 1.44, and 1.02, respectively) in specific sites within the YRD.
