Wetland restoration is an important water quality and climate resilience strategy. Wetland restoration rarely considers tradeoffs at large spatial and temporal scales, which limits capacity to aid decision makers. High resolution data can reveal hundreds to thousands of possible restoration options across a landscape, but guidance for setting restoration targets at these scales is limited. This study uses structured decision making (SDM) as a process for evaluating the desirability of numerous restoration options, with a case study on the Outer Coastal Plain of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, USA. The Nature Conservancy, in partnership with federal, state, and nonprofit organizations, evaluated a decision to target large-scale wetland restoration based on two fundamental objectives: improve water quality and enhance climate resilience. A total of 964 potentially restorable alternatives were delineated across the study area. The alternatives were evaluated on seven water quality and climate resilience criteria. High-priority alternatives were mapped based on multi-criteria ranking methods and principal component analysis. Sensitivity analysis included varying nutrient load data, implementing multiple ranking methods with different assumptions, and varying criteria weights. The maps revealed seven distinct regions of restoration opportunities. Tradeoffs were evaluated to distinguish between desirable and less desirable regions. Results indicated that three regions were promising choices to initiate landowner engagement and outreach. This study highlights the advantages of SDM to structure large-scale restoration decisions. In doing so, our work offers a roadmap toward further developing SDM in future applied restoration contexts.

Biological communities in freshwater streams are often impaired by multiple stressors (e.g., flow or water quality) originating from anthropogenic activities such as urbanization, agriculture, or energy extraction. Restoration efforts in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, USA seek to improve biological conditions in 10% of freshwater tributaries and to protect the biological integrity of existing healthy watersheds. To achieve these goals, resource managers need to better understand which stressors are most likely driving biological impairment. Our study addressed this knowledge gap through two approaches: 1) reviewing and synthesizing published multi-stressor studies, and 2) examining 303(d) listed impairments linked to biological impairment as identified by jurisdiction regulatory agencies (the states within the watershed and the District of Columbia). Results identified geomorphology (i.e., physical habitat), salinity, and toxic contaminants as important for explaining variability in benthic community metrics in the literature review. Geomorphology (i.e., physical habitat and sediment), salinity, and nutrients were the most reported stressors in the jurisdictional impairment analysis. Salinity is likely a major stressor in urban and mining settings, whereas geomorphology was commonly reported in agricultural settings. Toxic contaminants, such as pesticides, were rarely measured; more research is needed to quantify the extent of their effects in the region. Flow alteration was also highlighted as an important urban stressor in the literature review but was rarely measured in the literature or reported by jurisdictions as a cause of impairment. These results can be used to prioritize stressor monitoring by managers, and to improve stressor identification methods for identifying causes of biological impairment.

Coastal rivers contributed the majority of anthropogenic nitrogen (N) loads to coastal waters, often resulting in eutrophication and hypoxia zones. Accurate N source identification is critical for optimizing coastal river N pollution control strategies. Based on a 2-year seasonal record of dual stable isotopes (δ15N-NO– 3 and δ18O-NO– 3) and water quality parameters, this study combined the dual nitrate (NO– 3) stable isotope method and the absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model to elucidate N dynamics and sources in two coastal rivers of Hangzhou Bay. Water quality/trophic level indices indicated light-to-moderate eutrophication status for the studied rivers. Spatio-temporal variability of water quality was associated with seasonal agricultural, aquaculture and domestic activities, as well as the seasonal precipitation pattern. The APCS-MLR model identified soil + domestic wastewater (69.5%) and aquaculture tailwater (22.2%) as the major nitrogen pollution sources. Further, the dual stable isotope method identified soil N, aquaculture tailwater, domestic wastewater and atmospheric deposition N contributions of 35.3 ±21.1%, 29.7 ±17.2%, 27.9 ±14.5%, and 7.2 ±11.4% to riverine NO– 3 in the Cao’e River (CER) and 34.4 ±21.3%, 29.5 ±17.2%, 27.4 ±14.7%, and 8.7 ±12.8% in the Jiantang River (JTR), respectively. The APCS-MLR model and dual stable isotope method showed consistent results for riverine N source identification. Combining these two methods for riverine N source identifications effectively distinguished the mix-source components from the APCS-MLR method and alleviated the high cost of stable isotope analysis, thereby providing reliable N source apportionment results with low requirements for water quality sampling and isotope analysis costs. Moreover, this study highlights the importance of soil N management and aquaculture tailwater treatment in coastal river N pollution control.

The occurrence, spatial distribution, and source analysis of antibiotics in global coastal waters and estuaries are not well documented or understood. Therefore, the distribution of 14 antibiotics in inflowing river and bay water of Taizhou Bay, East China Sea, was studied. Thirteen antibiotics, excluding roxithromycin (ROM), were all detected in inflowing river and bay water. The total antibiotic concentrations in bay water ranged from 3126.62 to 26,531.48 ng/L, which were significantly higher than those in the inflowing river (17.20-25,090.25 ng/L). Macrolides (MAs) and sulfonamides (SAs) were dominant in inflowing river (accounting for 24.40% and 74.9% of the total antibiotic concentrations, respectively), while SAs in bay water (93.6% of the total concentrations). Among them, clindamycin (CLI) (concentration range: ND-8414 ng/L, mean 1437.59 ng/L) and sulfadimidine (SMX) (ND-25,184.00 ng/L, mean concentrations: 9107.88 ng/L) were the highest in those surface water samples. Source analysis showed that MAs and SAs in the inflowing river mainly came from the wastewater discharge of the surrounding residents and pharmaceutical companies, while SAs in the bay water mainly came from surrounding industrial activities and mariculture. However, the contribution of the inflowing river to the bay water cannot be ignored. The risk assessment showed that SMX and ofloxacin (OFX) have potential ecological risks. These data will support the various sectors of the environment in developing management strategies and to prevent antibiotic pollution.

The study aims to unravel the variability of Dinophysis spp. and their alleged toxins in conjunction with environmental drivers in Ambon Bay. Phytoplankton samples, lipophilic toxins and physiochemical water properties were analysed during a 1.5-year period. Three Dinophysis species (D. miles, D. caudata, and D. acuminata) were found in plankton samples, of which D. miles was the most abundant and persistently occurring species.Pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2) and its secoacid (PTX2sa) were detected throughout, and PTX2sa levels strongly correlated with D. miles cell abundance. The toxin showed a positive correlation with temperature, which may suggest that D. miles cells contain rather constant PTX2sa during warmer months. Dissolved nitrate concentrations werefound to play a major role in regulating cell abundances and toxin levels. This study adds adequate information regarding marine biotoxins and potentially toxic species for future Harmful Algal Bloom management in Ambon and Indonesia at large.

Contaminant substances consist of chemical elements that present the potential to adversely impact the ecology of the environment, thus representing a threat to local fauna and flora. In this context, heavy metals are critical agents that, depending on the nature and level, are potentially toxic to living organisms. In order to evaluate the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the Santos estuary and to determine the potential influence of salinity gradient on the heavy metal bioconcentration, the present study measured the concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Zn in two bivalve species (Crassostrea rhizophorae and Perna Perna) sampled at different sites of Santos Bay, in the southeastern region of Brazil. Throughout the study, the "sentinel species" used were effective in bioaccumulating contaminants. In oysters, based on the Brazilian legislation, critical limits were exceeded for As, Zn, Cu, and Cr. In the case of mussels, on the other hand, only for As, Zn, and Cr, the critical limits were overcome. In the present study, obtained data suggested salinity as a determinant parameter in As incorporation processes of bivalve mollusks. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The present study presents important results for the development of environmental management policies in estuarine environments. The present study points out differences between different organisms as biomonitors, providing subsidies for the decision of an effective biomonitoring program. The present study discusses values of contaminants as a danger to public health in Santos Bay, which can be extrapolated to other similar environments around the world.

An investigative biomonitoring study was conducted along the coastal area of Laizhou Bay (China) to evaluate the impact of organic pollution on the clam Ruditapes philippinarum using bioaccumulation and multi-biomarker measurements. In addition, the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and nonylphenol (NP) content in surface sediment at the study sites were also analyzed. Concentrations of PCBs, TPHs and NP in the sediments of the study area were 1.90 ± 0.10 μg kg−1, 39.55 ± 2.42 mg kg−1, 9.23 ± 0.41 μg kg−1 dry weight, respectively, while the organic contaminants in the soft tissues of R. philippinarum were 14.81 ± 0.96 μg kg−1 for PCBs, 165.87 ± 5.03 mg kg−1 for TPHs and 86.16 ± 5.29 μg kg−1 for NP. Linear regression analysis on the levels of organic pollutants accumulated in R. philippinarum and in sediments showed no significant correlation. Multi-biomarkers including superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, total glutathione and lipid peroxidation were assayed in gills and digestive glands of R. philippinarum. Finally, the biomarkers in gills were selected to calculate the Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) index and to evaluate the impact of the three organic contaminants on R. philippinarum collected from different sites. According to IBR results, the western coast and eastern coast exhibited higher environmental stress than the sampling sites along the southern coast of Laizhou Bay. Significant correlation was found between the level of organic contaminants in the sediments and IBR whereas no dependence was found between pollutants’ concentrations in sediments and separate biomarker responses. The results showed that PCBs and NP were the main organic pollutants among the three studied which have caused pollution pressure on R. philippinarum in Laizhou Bay coastal area.

Characterizing water quality in coastal waters through spatial observations is challenging, due to spatial and temporal variations in water composition. Nitrate, an important compound for water quality assessment, has received little attention in estimates made from satellite measurements, even though it can be estimated using models generated from multispectral images. Although organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in aquatic environments have received increasing concern, little information is available on their bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in marine food webs. Consequently, the risks of OPFRs to marine ecosystems are unknown. In this study, seven OPFR compounds in marine biological samples collected from Liaodong Bay, Bohai Sea, were analyzed to evaluate their level and biological amplification effect in the marine food web. The total OPFRs of marine organisms in Liaodong Bay ranged from 2.60 to 776 ng/g ww, and lipids were critical factors affecting the concentration of OPFRs in marine species. Tris (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) were the OPFRs most frequently detected in marine species. Still, tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) was dominant in most marine species (16/24), and the content of chlorinated OPFRs was highest. At the same time, alkyl OPFRs and aryl OPFRs accounted for the same proportion. No correlation between OPFR concentration and the trophic level was observed in marine organisms from Liaodong Bay. It was shown in the results of the species sensitivity distribution that TCIPP in Chinese seawater does not pose a potential ecological risk to marine species. However, much work remains to be done on accumulating information and the ecological risks of OPFRs in different marine food webs.

It remains unclear how the suspended non-fed bivalve mariculture will alter the coastal transfer and cleaning process of trace elements, the non-degradable contaminants, which have been reported to accumulate in sediment from bivalve mariculture areas. Herein, we set up a field in situ comparative test in the suspended oyster (Crassostrea plicatula) farming area (OF) and reference area (RA) of Xiangshan Bay to verify our hypothesis that the biodepositon of suspended oysters would consolidate trace elements from the water column and transport them to the sediment. Distribution of trace elements in multiple media of biodeposits (BDs), settling particles (SPs), sediments (SEs), and seawater demonstrate that the accelerated deposition of BDs which enriched trace elements from the water column by oysters filtering suspended particles led to trace elements accumulation in SEs from OF. Additionally, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, V, and Zn were strongly regulated by this process with significant (p 0.05) higher concentrations in SEs from OF (10.96, 0.20, 13.98, 82.40, 38.47, 38.22, 108.57, and 111.20 μg/g, repectively) than those from RA (9.43, 0.13, 11.76, 63.30, 30.34, 29.55, 86.59, and 100.24 μg/g, repectively), but the extent was different for Mn, Mo, Pb, and W with concentrations in SEs from OF (737.37, 0.81, 30.98, and 3.96 μg/g, repectively) and RA (765.25, 0.69, 31.27, and 3.34 μg/g, repectively), especially for Rb and Sr with concentrations in SEs from OF (131.13 and 96.24 μg/g, repectively) and RA (142.21 and 161.10 μg/g, repectively), due to their geochemical and geophysical properties. Moreover, the harvest of hyper-accumulated oysters as a sink for removing trace elements from water column cannot hide the impact of this process.

Estuarine environments are highly productive ecosystems exhibiting high fish biodiversity and richness. Estuarine bays yield significant fisheries catches, making them the target of extractive activities by both artisanal and industrial fisheries. These areas, however, are highly vulnerable to chemical contamination, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) associated with oil spills and other anthropogenic activities, which can jeopardize animal health and consumer welfare. In this context, this systematic review aimed to evaluate PAH levels detected in seafood from estuarine bays throughout the entire American continent and assess potential human health risks. The PICO methodology was applied, and 27 experimental papers were evaluated. The findings indicate that naphthalene and pyrene are routinely detected at high concentrations in several species, such as white mullet and catfish, and that biliary metabolites concentrations tend to be higher than tissue levels. Although the effects of PAH on animal health are well defined due to several decades of assessments, food safety evaluations are still not routine, evidencing a significant knowledge gap and the need for legislative measures based on toxicological data.

Tropical estuaries are productive dynamic ecosystems where water quality is mediated by physicochemical and biological processes and by fluvial and anthropogenic discharges. The objective of the study was to determine the influence of environmental variables on the spatiotemporal dynamics of water quality in Buenaventura Bay, which is a highly impacted estuary. Sampling was carried out during the dry and rainy season, at three depths, in four stations that represent the environmental gradient of the bay. Temperature, total dissolved solids, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and pH were determined for each sample. In addition, alkalinity, phosphates, nitrites, and nitrates as indicators of water quality were also measured. The estuary was classified as meso- and polyhaline, with appropriate oxygen and pH conditions and spatiotemporal gradients of temperature and solids mediated by river discharges. Significant variations were found in the physicochemical variables by season, with maximum salinity, pH, and solids in the dry season and oxygen and temperature in the rainy season. Likewise, most of these environmental variables were higher in the outer zone of the estuary and lower in the inner stations. Alkalinity and nitrite values were within the permitted ranges, while phosphates and nitrates indicated low water quality. There was a significant direct influence of temperature and oxygen on alkalinity and nitrites. However, for phosphates, no significant influence of environmental variables was found, suggesting a greater influence by fluvial and anthropogenic discharges, which produce a decrease in the environmental quality of the estuary.

Elevated metal concentrations can become harmful to marine organisms and to humans that consume them. Metal concentrations at multiple sites around Algoa Bay, South Africa, were last investigated in the 1980s. We collected wild brown mussels (Perna perna) from seven sites around Algoa Bay, and quantified metallic elements using ICPMS. Metallic element concentrations differed significantly among the sampling sites and correlated with pollution sources at specific sites. The concentration of Pb in mussels at one site slightly exceeded South African limits. Based on the South African estimated daily intake, the target hazard quotient, and South African metal limits, mussels from Algoa Bay are safe for human consumption, except possibly from one site. However, combined with data on bisphenols and benzophenone UV filters in P. perna from the same sites, we suggest a possible health concern to consumers.

Marine aquaculture in semi-enclosed bays can significantly influence nutrient cycling in coastal ecosystems. However, the impact of marine aquaculture on the dynamics of dissimilatory nitrate reduction processes (DNRPs) and the fate of reactive nitrogen remain poorly understood. In this study, the rates of DNRPs and the abundances of related functional genes were investigated in aquaculture and non-aquaculture areas. The results showed that marine aquaculture significantly increased the denitrification (DNF) and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) rates and decreased the rate of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANA), as compared with non-aquaculture sites. DNF was the dominant pathway contributing to the total nitrate reduction, and its contribution to the total nitrate reduction significantly increased from 66.72% at non-aquaculture sites to 78.50% at aquaculture sites. Marine aquaculture can significantly affect the physicochemical characteristics of sediment and the abundances of related functional genes, leading to variations in the nitrate reduction rates. Although nitrate removal rates increased in the marine aquaculture area, ammonification rates and the nitrogen retention index in the aquaculture areas were 2.19 and 1.24 times, respectively, higher than those at non-aquaculture sites. Net reactive nitrogen retention exceeded nitrogen removal in the aquaculture area, and the retained reactive nitrogen could diffuse with the tidal current to the entire bay, thereby aggravating N pollution in the entire study area. These results show that marine aquaculture is the dominant source of nitrogen pollution in semi-enclosed bays. This study can provide insights into nitrogen pollution control in semi-enclosed bays with well-developed marine aquaculture.

The current study seeks to identify possible anthropogenic and/or natural environmental stressors that may account for the long-term decline of ecosystem health in Lavaca Bay, Texas, USA. The Formosa Plastics Corporation instituted monitoring of an industrial discharge into the bay with 16 fixed point stations and quarterly sampling from 1993 to 2020. Comprehensive measurements included organic and inorganic solutes in surface water, porewater and sediment, sediment content, plankton, nekton, and infaunal benthos. All parameter trends changed over time due to climate, freshwater inflow events, and/or seasonal changes. Biological community structure and sediment changed with distance from the discharge site. Dominance characterized community structure because three to four taxa comprised > 70% of individuals for nekton (trawl and gill net), phytoplankton, zooplankton, and ichthyoplankton samples. Sediment became sandier over time (48 to 75%) and away from the discharge. Surface water and porewater at reference (R) stations and stations near the discharge site had similar hydrographical and biological trends over time, indicating no long-term impact due to the discharge. However, 99.9% of 424,671 measurements of organic contaminants were non-detectable because the methods were insensitive to ambient concentrations. Thus, it is still not known if contaminants play a role in the long-term decline of ecosystem health in Lavaca Bay. Furthermore, only four R stations were sampled and were all 3810 m from the discharge site, so it is possible that trends in R stations do not represent the natural background. Future studies should include more R stations and lower detection limits for contaminants.

We analyzed total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and heavy metals in 58 sediment samples from the Laoshan Bay, China. TOC and TN results identified marine primary production as the dominant source for organic matter, and the weak correlations between TOC, TN, and heavy metals indicated the terrestrial origin of heavy metals. The Bohai Bay as a typical semi-enclosed bay in northern China with poor water exchange capacity and significant coastal urbanization, is greatly influenced by land-based inputs and human activities. As a class of pseudo-persistent organic pollutants, the spatial and temporal distribution of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) is particularly important to the ecological environment, and it will be imperfect to assess the ecological risk of PPCPs for the lack of systematic investigation of their distribution in different season. 14 typical PPCPs were selected to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution in the Bohai Bay by combining online solid-phase extraction (SPE) and HPLC-MS/MS techniques in this study, and their ecological risks to aquatic organisms were assessed by risk quotients (RQs) and concentration addition (CA) model. It was found that PPCPs widely presented in the Bohai Bay with significant differences of spatial and seasonal distribution. The concentrations of ∑PPCPs were higher in autumn than in summer. The distribution of individual pollutants also showed significant seasonal differences. The high values were mainly distributed in estuaries and near-shore outfalls. Mariculture activities in the northern part of the Bohai Bay made a greater contribution to the input of PPCPs. Caffeine, florfenicol, enrofloxacin and norfloxacin were the main pollutants in the Bohai Bay, with detection frequencies exceeding 80 %. The ecological risk of PPCPs to algae was significantly higher than that to invertebrates and fish. CA model indicated that the potential mixture risk of total PPCPs was not negligible, with 34 % and 88 % of stations having mixture risk in summer and autumn, respectively. The temporary stagnation of productive life caused by Covid-19 weakened the input of PPCPs to the Bohai Bay, reducing the cumulative effects of the pollutants. This study was the first full-coverage investigation of PPCPs in the Bohai Bay for different seasons, providing an important basis for the ecological risk assessment and pollution prevention of PPCPs in the bay.

Microplastic pollution in various ecosystems has gained significant attention across the globe. Due to ubiquitous abundance, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems at regional scales are polluted via uncontrolled anthropogenic actions. Therefore, this study investigates microplastic pollution and distribution in sediments and surface water of the Moheshkhali channel of Bangladesh, Bay of Bengal, along with their shape, size, color, and polymeric analysis. The situation of Ramsar sites along the Caspian Sea coast has deteriorated over the past decades, and this is more noticeable in the narrow coastal strip of the south Caspian Sea. In this study we investigate how the Caspian Sea level changes affect the coastal Ramsar sites. Particularly, we focus on the Gorgan Bay in the southeast corner of the Caspian Sea, which is experiencing extensive water level decline, even desiccation. We used satellite images from three periods corresponding to periods of two sea level falls and one sea level rise, in order to decipher spatio-temporal changes of the wetlands. We conducted field campaign in the Gorgan Bay for sampling and measurement of physical, chemical and biological parameters. We simulated water circulation for the past, current and future conditions of the Gorgan Bay, which is essential to sustain better water exchange between the Bay and the Caspian Sea. We applied dust simulation in the case of a total desiccation of the Gorgan Bay. The result shows that the total area of the Caspian coastal Ramsar sites during the two periods of the sea level fall is almost the same; however, the aerial changes in the southern wetlands are more visible. In this study, we conducted two cruises in the Bohai Bay (China) focusing on phytoplankton community and relation to water quality. The evaluation revealed that most of the open area was non-eutrophic, whereas the river inlet had severe eutrophication. Phytoplankton populations respond differently to different aquatic environments and are controlled by more than two factors, as revealed by aggregated boosted tree analysis. Notably, a shift in the phytoplankton community structure was observed during the seasonal transition, from the dominance of diatoms to the co-dominance of diatoms-dinoflagellates. However, the relative abundance of dinoflagellates increased by 14 % in autumn, when the harmful algae species Akashiwo sanguinea exclusively predominated; this was primarily linked to the nutrient ratios, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. The eutrophication and organic pollution had direct effects on phytoplankton abundance. Overall, our findings may provide further insights into the impacts of eutrophic environments on phytoplankton community structure in coastal systems.

In recent years, research on pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the marine environment has attracted increasing attention worldwide. However, more work is needed to improve PPCPs detection methods, specifically for seawater environments. An analytical method based on stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) had been developed and fully optimized for the pretreatment and detection of ten widely used PPCPs that are commonly found in seawater samples. By optimizing several variables including the material of the stir bars, extraction temperature, extraction time, ionic strength, desorption solvent, and desorption time, the optimized method has achieved excellent results in the detection and quantification of target PPCPs with detection limits ranging from 0.03 to 1 ng/L. The distribution of target PPCPs at the mouth of Jiaozhou Bay was successfully determined by this method, and the concentrations and detection frequencies of PPCPs varied greatly from N.D. to 449.36 ng/L and from 9.1 % to 100 %, respectively. Moreover, the distributions of PPCPs were explained by the Lagrangian particle-tracking model, and the results showed that the Tuandao sewage treatment plant had the most significant impact on the study area. The environmental risk assessment results showed that several target PPCPs might pose risks to aquatic organisms. In particular, triclocarban should receive more attention and the risk quotients of the mixtures (MRQ) should not be ignored.

The inner bay of Izmir is known as the part between Sasalı/Karşıyaka coastline and Güzelbahçe/Bayraklı. It is used extensively in transportation. There is constant ferry transportation and an international port operates in this region. There are also a few streams that flow into the inner bay. Therefore, the inner bay can be exposed to continuous chemical pollutants, and these wastes can intensively be observed in its natural structure. In this study, the magnetic susceptibility values and elemental analyses of the samples taken from the surface sea waters of the inner bay coastline were performed. Silicon, strontium, and manganese elements were mostly observed in the samples. The greatest susceptibility values were seen in the Bostanlı ferry port and Göztepe ferry. In addition, the standard deviation and correlation coefficient values of the samples were calculated and discussed. According to the correlation coefficient value, it can be said that there is a positive correlation between metal ion ratios and magnetic susceptibility.

Regionally scaled assessments of hydrologic alteration for small streams and its effects on freshwater taxa are often inhibited by a low number of stream gages. To overcome this limitation, we paired modeled estimates of hydrologic alteration to a benthic macroinvertebrate index of biotic integrity data for 4522 stream reaches across the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Using separate random-forest models, we predicted flow status (inflated, diminished, or indeterminant) for 12 published hydrologic metrics (HMs) that characterize the main components of flow regimes. We used these models to predict each HM status for each stream reach in the watershed, and linked predictions to macroinvertebrate condition samples collected from streams with drainage areas less than 200 km2. Flow alteration was calculated as the number of HMs with inflated or diminished status and ranged from 0 (no HM inflated or diminished) to 12 (all 12 HMs inflated or diminished). When focused solely on the stream condition and flow-alteration relationship, degraded macroinvertebrate condition was, depending on the number of HMs used, 3.8–4.7 times more likely in a flow-altered site; this likelihood was over twofold higher in the urban-focused dataset (8.7–10.8), and was never significant in the agriculture-focused dataset. Logistic regression analysis using the entire dataset showed for every unit increase in flow-alteration intensity, the odds of a degraded condition increased 3.7%. Our results provide an indication of whether altered streamflow is a possible driver of degraded biological conditions, information that could help managers prioritize management actions and lead to more effective restoration efforts.

Accumulation of heavy metals in zooplanktons is used as an essential tool for the evaluation of health of an ecosystem. Such data are used to set further monitoring strategies especially in (coastal) water bodies. In the present study, seasonal bioaccumulation of heavy metals such as Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd and Hg, organic loads such as nitrite and phosphate, contents loads and physicochemical parameters in Haripur creek along the Bay of Bengal in east coast of India is measured in zooplanktons. Coastal organisms are considered an integral part of marine ecosystems and their frequent massive die-off events along the coast of the Bay of Bengal are correlated with the obtained pollutant data. The levels of heavy metals were also correlated with several extrinsic environmental factors such as water transparency, dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH and temperature. Discriminant function analyses and standardised coefficients for canonical variables for the obtained data indicate that the studied environmental factors and organic loads varied as a function of season. Bioaccumulation of the studied heavy metals in zooplanktons was seasonal and infrequently noticed above the standard limit. The computed bioaccumulation factor of the five metals showed that accumulation of Zn was higher in zooplanktons as compared to that of the other studied metals. So, the entry of heavy metals through the food chains or via direct exposure (to organic loads also) to the other inhabiting organisms including fish may be assumed. This could be one of the possible reasons for the observed frequent (fish) die-off events at Gopalpur Coast along the Bay of Bengal and may be considered a clue for future investigations.

In the development of a land-sea coordination management strategy, it is necessary to analyze pollution sources and loads of pollutants entering the sea. This study estimated the sources and transport of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) entering Bohai Bay in Tianjin, a lower plain urban watershed, using a SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) model. We calibrated the model using TN and TP data from 26 and 27 sites, respectively. The results demonstrated that the R2 values of TN and TP were both above 0.99. In 2013, the TN load delivered to Bohai Bay was 21,320 ton, which could be traced to various sources: upstream (39%), industrial discharge (10%), sewage discharge (34%), fertilizer application (3%), livestock breeding (7%), aquaculture (5%), and rural communities (2%). The TP load delivered to Bohai Bay was 1504 ton, which originated from upstream (33%), industrial discharge (5%), sewage discharge (21%), fertilizer application (5%), livestock breeding (12%), aquaculture (10%), and rural communities (14%). Rational management of the water resources in streams, enhancement of water circulation between rivers and wetlands, and making full use of the effect of both land and water on pollutant retention are the suitable strategies in watershed management, reducing marine pollution.

This study highlights the reproductive biology of Hooghly Croaker, Panna heterolepis Trewavas, 1977 which is one of the dominant fish in the Bay of Bengal (Bangladesh) based on monthly sampling of 569 female individuals from January to December 2019. We observed the effect of different environmental factors (temperature, rainfall, dissolved oxygen, and pH) on the reproduction of P. heterolepis. Measurements of each individual like total length (TL) and body weight (BW) were taken by using of measuring board and digital balance. Gonads were carefully removed through ventral dissection from females and weighed to 0.01 g accuracy. To assess the size at sexual maturity (Lm), spawning season, and its peak, the GSI (gonadosomatic index in %), MGSI (modified gonadosomatic index in %), and DI (Dobriyal index) were considered. Based on these indices, the Lm was documented 15.0 cm in TL. Moreover, L50 was predicted by logistic calculation as 15.0 cm TL. Furthermore, greater values of GSI, MGSI, and DI values denoted the spawning season as of January to July, with a peak in February. Additionally, Fulton’s condition factor (KF) was significantly correlated with GSI values. In addition, GSI was statistically correlated with temperature. However, other environmental factors (rainfall, dissolved oxygen, and pH) did not show any significant relation with GSI. Finally, the outcomes of our study might be useful to carry out specific management programs for P. heterolepis in the Bay of Bengal and nearby aquatic ecosystem.

Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations were measured in oysters (C. gigas), plankton, and seawater during spring, summer, and autumn in Liaodong Bay (Bohai Sea, China) to elucidate the effects of season, region, and oyster size on metal bioaccumulation in oysters. Metal concentrations were quantified via atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Our study determined that metal concentrations in oysters, plankton, and seawater were the highest in summer, whereas the lowest levels occurred in autumn. Regarding oyster sizes, the highest Pb levels occurred in C3-sized oysters (> 5-cm length), whereas the highest Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn levels occurred in C2 (3–5-cm length) oysters.
