The central Yunnan region has become an important planting area of Ilex verticillat in China. In order to solve the problem of uneven Ilex verticillat cut/potted quality in the local area, provide reference for the formation of cultivation measures and the management of fruit-setting stage for Ilex verticillat Oosterwijk in the central Yunnan region, in this study, taking Ilex verticillat Oosterwijk planted in Anning as the test material, its phenology was observed, the pollen vitality of male flowers and the stigma receptivity of female flowers were measured, and the fruit growth and development was observed through artificial pollination. The results showed that Ilex verticillat Oosterwijk planted in the central Yunnan region sprouted in the middle of March, branched in the early of April, bloomed in the middle of May, fruit-enlarged from the early of June to the early of September, and fruit-ripened from the middle of September to the early of October. The germination rate of fresh pollen from male flowers was 8.68% by cultured in vitro for 1 hour and 25.12% by cultured in vitro for 6 hours, and the fresh pollen germination rate on the female stigma reached 75.23%, the average length of pollen tubes was 1 088.70 μm at 2 days after pollination and entered the ovules, which indicated that the female and male flower had normal fertility. And it took approximately 100 days to getting-red fruits and 125 days to the ripen fruits after the artificial pollination. Despite the importance of gamete production this topic has rarely been investigated in angiosperms using comparative approaches. Here, we investigated pollen and ovule numbers per flower in 73 species and 99 populations of Primula comprising both distylous and homostylous reproductive systems. We investigated whether phylogenetic relationships influenced associations between variation in gamete production, floral traits and elevation, and whether the evolutionary breakdown of distyly to homostyly resulted in parallel changes to gamete production. We used a Bayesian approach facilitated by the MCMCglmm method to model pollen and ovule traits across species and determined whether they exhibited phylogenetic signals. We detected significant positive correlations between pollen number and elevation in both the long‐styled and short‐styled morphs (L‐morph and S‐morph, respectively), whereas ovule number was not influenced by elevation. Pollen production was significantly higher in the L‐morph than in the S‐morph, but there was no significant difference between morphs in ovule number. Pollen volume exhibited a positive correlation with the style length of compatible morphs. The transition from distyly to homostyly was associated with significant decreases in pollen production but not ovule number. Our findings demonstrate the importance of elevation on pollen production, perhaps because of selection to improve pollen‐transfer efficiency in uncertain pollinator environments. In contrast, ovule number variation appears to be more constrained by phylogenetic relationships. Our comparative analyses of a well defined angiosperm lineage highlight the complex interactions between intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing gamete production in plants and emphasize the importance of considering pollen and ovule data separately. Maize silks (style) receive wind-transmitted pollen. Thereafter, male gametes travel through the silks to reach ovules. Pollinated silks contain a microbiome, members of which are predicted to promote host reproduction and abiotic/biotic stress tolerance during fertilization. It is unknown whether pollinated silk bacteria originate environmentally (air/pollen) or from maternal tissue. Methods are lacking to test microbial colonization of silks in their native habitat [on intact maize inflorescences (cobs) encased by husk leaves]. Current methods focus on naked silks attached to dehusked cob pieces. Here, two novel methods are presented to enable research on silk microbes in their native habitat. Method 1 tests whether silk-associated bacteria with potential environmental origins are attracted toward ovules. Method 2 distinguishes whether a microbe colonizes silks from the environment or maternal parent. Biosafety containment was enabled by housing microbe-treated cobs in large jars. Using these methods, a model bacterial isolate from fertilization-stage silks (DsRed-tagged Pantoea-E04) was shown to colonize husk-covered silks after inoculating exposed silk tips; E04 could not colonize from the cob base, suggesting an environmental origin. In support, E04 colonized silks more frequently when cobs were uncut and oriented vertically. These protocols will enable more biologically relevant investigation of silk microbiomes and pathogens. The diversification of angiosperms has largely been attributed to adaptive radiation of their pollination and mating systems, which are relevant drivers of the macroevolution processes. The fig (Ficus, Moraceae) and fig wasp (Agaonidae, Hymenoptera) interaction is an example of obligate mutualism. Passive and active pollination modes have been associated with morphological traits in both partners. However, more information is required to assess the relationship between floral traits and pollination modes, particularly in Neotropical Ficus species.This study evaluates the morphological traits of figs and fig wasps regarding pollination modes in species belonging to Neotropical Ficus sections (three species each of Americanae and Pharmacosycea). Pollination mode was identified by floral morphology, anther/ovule ratio, and specialized structures fig wasps use for pollen transport (pollen pocket and coxal combs).Fig species in sect. Americanae are actively pollinated because pistillate flowers form a synstigma, present anther/ovule ratios <0.11, and their pollinator Pegoscapus fig wasps have pollen pockets and coxal combs. In contrast, species in sect. Pharmacosycea have free pistillate flowers, with anther/ovule ratios >0.27; they are pollinated by Tetrapus wasps, which lack specialized structures to carry pollen. Each species of Ficus was associated with a single morphospecies of fig wasp.The results support previous contributions that consider reciprocal morphological traits between fig species and their pollinating wasps as evidence of a close co‐evolutionary history. Flower bud differentiation is the commencement of plant reproductive development. Flower organ specialization follows flower bud differentiation. This biological mechanism controls whether plants reproduce successfully via seed. Caucasian clover (Trifolium ambiguum) is used in mixed temperate pastures. However, its low natural seed setting rate contributes to a low seed yield. This study aimed to elucidate how the reproductive biology of Caucasian clover could affect seed production. Caucasian clover flower bud differentiation and flower organ development were systematically examined. Flower bud differentiation has six consecutive stages: pre‐differentiation, differentiation of the inflorescence, the floret, the perianth, the stamen, and finally the pistil primordium. The anther has two chambers. Pollen grains have six development phases: the tetraspore, early‐uninucleate, late‐uninucleate, vegetative cell and germ‐cell form, binucleate, and maturation phase. The microspore tetrad is tetrahedral, and the mature pollen grains are bicellular. Pollen grain viability was found 35%. The Caucasian clover monocarpelate ovary contains 1–2 ovules that are covered with a 2‐layer integument. The ovule is anatropous. The embryo sac development type is a polygonum. The floral formula is "⚥↑K(5) C1+1+2 A(9)+1G(1:1:1−2)". These genetic traits of two pollen sacs and low viability pollen grains may be responsible for the low natural seed setting. Poor seed setting may also be due to embryo sac dysplasia that leads to ovule sterility. Therefore, the breeding aim should be to improve pollen viability, to decrease embryo sac dysplasia and to reduce embryo abortion that could be targeted for genetic improvement to enhance seed yields. Summary: Pollination presents a risky journey for pollen grains. Pollen loss is sometimes thought to favour greater pollen investment to compensate for the inefficiency of transport. Sex allocation theory, to the contrary, has consistently concluded that postdispersal loss should have no selective effect on investment in either sex function. But the intuitively appealing compensation idea continues to be raised despite the lack of theoretical endorsement.We address the theoretical issue with a model that directly represents pollen loss (and ovule loss through floral demise or loss of receptivity) as rate‐dependent dynamical processes. These loss rates can be varied to examine the effect of pollination efficiency on optimal sex allocation. Pollen–ovule ratios follow from the sex allocation based on the resource costs of pollen and ovule production.This model confirms conventional findings that pollen loss should have essentially no effect on sexual resource allocation in large, panmictic populations. Pollen limitation of seed set does not alter this conclusion.These results force us to rethink the empirical association of pollination efficiency with low pollen–ovule ratios. This pattern could arise if efficient pollen transport commonly results in stigmatic deposition of cohorts of related pollen. Empirical evidence of correlated paternity supports this explanation. The article explores the process of ovule abortion and its implications for the invasiveness and seed dispersal of Hyptis suaveolens Lamiaceae Poit species. The study examines the anthesis and dehiscence of anthers, stigma receptivity, path of pollen tubes under fluorescence microscope, pollen-ovule ratio, and time and duration of visits of insects on the flower. It evaluates the total number of pistils with ovule abortion and floral morphology.

Understanding pollen and ovule fertility as factors influencing fruit and seed set is important in cassava breeding. Extended daylength with red light (RL) and plant growth regulators (PGRs) have been used to induce flowering and fruit set in cassava without any reference to effects on pollen viability or ovule fertilizability. This study investigated the effects of field-applied RL and PGR on pollen viability and ovule fertilizability. Panels of cassava genotypes with early or moderate flowering responses were used. RL was administered from dusk to dawn. Two PGRs, 6-benzyl adenine (BA), a cytokinin and silver thiosulphate (STS), an anti-ethylene, were applied. Pollen viability was assessed based on pollen grain diameter, in vitro stainability, in vivo germinability, ovule fertilizability, and ploidy level. Treating flowers with RL increased the pollen diameter from 145.6 in control to 148.5 µm in RL, 78.5 to 93.0% in stainability, and 52.0 to 56.9% in ovule fertilizability in treated female flowers. The fruit set also increased from 51.5 in control to 71.8% in RL-treated female flowers. The seed set followed a similar trend. The ploidy level of pollen from RL-treated flowers increased slightly and was positively correlated with pollen diameter (R2 = 0.09 *), ovule fertilization (R2 = 0.20 *), fruit set (R2 = 0.59 *), and seed set (R2 = 0.60 *). Treating flowers with PGR did not affect pollen diameter but increased stainability from 78.5% in control to 82.1%, ovule fertilizability from 42.9 to 64.9%, and fruit set from 23.2 to 51.9% in PGR-treated female flowers. Combined BA + STS application caused the highest ovule fertilizability, fruit, and seed set efficiency. These results show that RL and PGR treatments increase pollen viability and ovule fertilizability. This is important for planning pollination strategies in cassava breeding programmes. In gymnosperms such as Ginkgo biloba , the arrival of pollen plays a key role in ovule development, before fertilization occurs. Accordingly, G. biloba female plants geographically isolated from male plants abort all their ovules after the pollination drop emission, which is the event that allows the ovule to capture pollen grains. To decipher the mechanism induced by pollination required to avoid ovule senescence and then abortion, we compared the transcriptomes of pollinated and unpollinated ovules at three time points after the end of the emission of pollination drop. Transcriptomic and in situ expression analyses revealed that several key genes involved in programmed cell death such as senescence and apoptosis, DNA replication, and cell cycle regulation were differentially expressed in unpollinated ovules compared to pollinated ovules. We provide evidence that the pollen captured by the pollination drop affects auxin local accumulation and might cause deregulation of key genes required for the ovule's programmed cell death, activating both the cell cycle regulation and DNA replication genes. Most Aristolochiaceae species studied so far are from temperate regions, bearing self‐compatible protogynous trap flowers. Although self‐incompatibility has been suggested for tropical species, the causes of self‐sterility in this family remain unknown. To fill this gap, we studied the pollination of the tropical Aristolochia esperanzae, including the physical and physiological anti‐selfing mechanisms.Floral visitors trapped inside flowers were collected to determine the pollinators. Protogyny was characterized by observing the temporal expression of sexual phases and stigmatic receptivity tests. The breeding system was investigated using hand‐pollination treatments. Pollen tube growth was observed using epifluorescence to identify the self‐incompatibility mechanism.Flies were the most frequent visitors found inside A. esperanzae trap flowers, with individuals from the family Ulidiidae being potential pollinators since they carried pollen. The characteristic flower odour and presence of larvae indicate that A. esperanzae deceives flies through oviposition‐site mimicry. Although this species showed incomplete protogyny, stigmatic receptivity decreased during the male phase, avoiding self‐pollination. Fruits developed only after cross‐ and open pollination, indicating that the population is non‐autonomous, non‐apomictic, and self‐sterile. This occurred through a delay in the growth of geitonogamous pollen tubes to the ovary and lower ovule penetration, indicating a late‐acting self‐incompatibility mechanism.Our findings expand the number of families in which late‐acting self‐incompatibility has been reported, demonstrating that it is more widespread than previously thought, especially when considering less‐studied tropical species among the basal angiosperms. The involvement of Ca2+ ions in angiosperms sexual processes is well established, while in gymnosperms, such knowledge remains limited and is still a topic of discussion. In this study, we focused on Larix decidua, using Alizarin-red S staining and the pyroantimonate method to examine the tissue and subcellular distribution of free and loosely bound Ca2+ ions at different stages of the male gametophyte's development and its interaction with the ovule. Our findings show that in larch, both the germination of pollen grains and the growth of pollen tubes occur in an environment rich in Ca2+. These ions play a crucial role in the adhesion of the pollen grain to the stigmatic tip and its subsequent movement to the micropylar canal. There is a significant presence of free and loosely bound Ca2+ ions in both the fluid of the micropylar canal and the extracellular matrix of the nucellus. As the pollen tube extends through the nucellus, we observed a notable accumulation of Ca2+ ions just above the entry to the mature archegonium, a region likely crucial for the male gametophyte's directional growth. Meanwhile, the localized presence of free and loosely bound Ca2+ ions within the egg cell cytoplasm may inhibit the pollen tubes growth and rupture, playing an important role in fertilization. Premise of research. Hermaphroditic flowering plants achieve reproductive success via both seed siring (male function) and seed production (female function). In pollinator-dependent plants, both gender functions depend on successful pollination, in which pollen is transferred from anthers to stigmas, resulting in seed production. However, it is still unclear how male (pollen removal) and female (pollen receipt and pollen tubes) components of pollination success are associated with each other and which community-level processes drive each function in coflowering communities. Methodology. In a pollen-limited environment with low pollinator visitation rates and most ovules left unfertilized, we measured pollen removal, pollen receipt, and pollen tubes across 41 species and tested their correlation and how floral density and reproductive traits predict each component. Pivotal results. One-quarter of the pollen remained on flowers on average, while disproportionate increases in pollen removal were often associated with small increases in pollen receipt and pollen tubes. Abundant plants suffered intraspecific competition, while interspecific individuals engaged in facilitative interactions via all components (pollen removal, pollen receipt, and pollen tubes) but in varying strengths. Plants with small display size and flowering synchronously with the plant community were at a disadvantage in terms of pollen removal but at an advantage in terms of pollen receipt and pollen tubes. Conclusions. The natural low pollinator availability may limit both gender functions, leading to the correlation between pollination success components. Nevertheless, opposing community-level processes drive each pollination success component in plants with small display size. Our results suggest that coflowering context is important to understand potential synergies and conflicts between gender functions at the pollinator attraction stage, which are common evolutionary consequences of bisexuality. Pollen allelopathy positively or negatively influences the fertilization of plants and has great significance from ecological perspectives. The release of allelochemicals from foreign pollen grains on the stigmatic surface obstructs the processes of fertilisation, seed establishment, tube formation, stigma receptivity, and pollen germination. So far, pollen allelopathy has received little attention and still a growing topic of ecological studies. Therefore, a literature review was undertaken to provide the valuable information regarding the ecological and reproductive implications of pollen allelopathy, heterospecific pollen transfer mechanisms of allelopathic anemophilous and entomophilous plants, and to shed light on the biochemistry and mode of action of allelochemicals. The majority of entomophilous plants share pollinators within communities, and heterospecific pollen transfer by both anemophilous and entomophilous plants causes a reduction in their reproductive success, like pollen germination, tube development, ovule maturation and seed set. For detailed study of pollen allelopathy, a few factors should be considered like metrological parameters, distance travelled by pollen, pollen viability, and stigma receptivity during foreign pollen deposition. A thorough understanding of the biochemical and enzymatic processes that occur after foreign pollen is deposited on the native stigma will open up new perspectives on plant reproduction. Pollen allelochemicals, which have important significance as biocontrol agents for the maintenance of agroecosystems, need to be identified and characterised. Some plants that invade environments outside their native range of distribution often face reproductive challenges such as limited pollinators and mates. Thus, the capacity to reproduce autonomously in the absence of pollinators or mates can facilitate establishment and spread of invasive plants. Here, we study the capacity of Solanum rostratum to reproduce through autonomous self-pollination. Although this plant is self-compatible, it strongly depends on visitation of buzzing bees to reproduce in its native range. We compared floral morphology, pollen: ovule ratios, reproductive phenology, and capacity for autonomous self-pollination of two populations of native distribution (Mexico) and another two populations of the invasive range (USA). We found a reduction in anther-stigma distance, pollen: ovule ratio, and plant height in invasive populations, as well as a shift to increased resource allocation to floral vs. vegetative structures and faster flowering compared to native populations. Importantly, invasive populations show a marked increase in the capacity to produce fruits autonomously (without pollen vectors). Our results suggest that the northern invasion of S. rostratum could have been facilitated by a shift in reproductive strategy from outcrossing to autonomous self-pollination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The Glucan synthase-like (GSL) genes are indispensable for some important highly-specialized developmental and cellular processes involving callose synthesis and deposition in plants. At present, the best-characterized reproductive functions of GSL genes are those for pollen formation and ovary expansion, but their role in seed initiation remains unknown. Results: We identified a rice seed mutant, watery seed 1-1 (ws1-1), which contained a mutation in the OsGSL2 gene. The mutant produced seeds lacking embryo and endosperm but filled with transparent and sucrose-rich liquid. In a ws1-1 spikelet, the ovule development was normal, but the microsporogenesis and male gametophyte development were compromised, resulting in the reduction of fertile pollen. After fertilization, while the seed coat normally developed, the embryo failed to differentiate normally. In addition, the divided endosperm-free nuclei did not migrate to the periphery of the embryo sac but aggregated so that their proliferation and cellularization were arrested. Moreover, the degeneration of nucellus cells was delayed in ws1-1. OsGSL2 is highly expressed in reproductive organs and developing seeds. Disrupting OsGSL2 reduced callose deposition on the outer walls of the microspores and impaired the formation of the annular callose sheath in developing caryopsis, leading to pollen defect and seed abortion. Conclusions: Our findings revealed that OsGSL2 is essential for rice fertility and is required for embryo differentiation and endosperm-free nucleus positioning, indicating a distinct role of OsGSL2, a callose synthase gene, in seed initiation, which provides new insight into the regulation of seed development in cereals. Background: As the male and female gametophytes of flowering plants, pollen and ovules largely determine the upper and lower boundaries of plant reproductive success. It is commonly predicted that pollen and ovule number per flower should increase, and pollen-ovule ratio (P/O) per flower should decrease with increasing elevation in response to a more stochastic pollination environment. Here, we aimed to determine the response of pollen number, ovule number, and P/O to other floral traits and elevation gradients for 84 insect-pollinated herbaceous flowering plant species in five sub-alpine and alpine communities (2709 to 3896 m a.s.l.) on Yulong Snow Mountain, southwestern China. Results: Six floral traits, including P/O, floral display area, flower number, tube depth, flower shape, and pollen presentation, were highly correlated with pollen and ovule number per flower. With increasing elevation, pollen number and P/O per flower increased marginally and significantly, respectively; ovule number per individual, flower number per individual, stigma stamen separation, and inflorescence height decreased significantly. However, ovule number per flower and other floral traits (i.e., floral display area, tube depth, stigma height, stamen height, and pollen and P/O per individual) did not change with elevation. We detected significant phylogenetic signals for pollen number, ovule number, and P/O, suggesting that these traits may be highly conserved and with limited response to changing environmental conditions. Conclusions: Results revealed patterns of plant reproductive character evolution along elevation gradients and the potential factors governing their spatial variation in high-elevation environments. Plant species at high elevations are more likely adapted to cross-pollination, indicated by increased P/O per flower at high elevations on Yulong Mountain. Pollen tubes of higher plants grow very rapidly until they reach the ovules to fertilize the female gametes. This growth process is energy demanding, however, the nutrition strategies of pollen are largely unexplored. Here, we studied the function of sucrose transporters and invertases during pollen germination and pollen tube growth. RT-PCR analyses, reporter lines and knockout mutants were used to study gene expression and protein function in pollen. The genome of Arabidopsis thaliana contains eight genes that encode functional sucrose/H+ symporters. Apart from AtSUC2, which is companion cell specific, all other AtSUC genes are expressed in pollen tubes. AtSUC1 is present in developing pollen and seems to be the most important sucrose transporter during the fertilization process. Pollen of an Atsuc1 knockout plant contain less sucrose and have defects in pollen germination and pollen tube growth. The loss of other sucrose carriers affects neither pollen germination nor pollen tube growth. A multiple knockout line Atsuc1Atsuc3Atsuc8Atsuc9 shows a phenotype that is comparable to the Atsuc1 mutant line. Loss of AtSUC1 can't be complemented by AtSUC9, suggesting a special function of AtSUC1. Besides sucrose carriers, pollen tubes also synthesize monosaccharide carriers of the AtSTP family as well as invertases. We could show that AtcwINV2 and AtcwINV4 are expressed in pollen, AtcwINV1 in the transmitting tissue and AtcwINV5 in the funiculi of the ovary. The vacuolar invertase AtVI2 is also expressed in pollen, and a knockout of AtVI2 leads to a severe reduction in pollen germination. Our data indicate that AtSUC1 mediated sucrose accumulation during late stages of pollen development and cleavage of vacuolar sucrose into monosaccharides is important for the process of pollen germination. Brassica juncea and B. napus species are predominantly self-pollinated. Parchment paper or muslin cloth bags are used for controlled selfed or cross-seed production. We evaluated three non-woven synthetic pollination control bags (PCBs) for two years as replacement for the commonly used PCBs. The new synthetic PCBs were fully pollen proof since the molecular marker analysis of the random seeds set on two cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines isolated with PCBs were all maternally originated. DWB03 bags returned 47% significantly more seeds per bud than the parchment paper bags. Larger DWB03 bags showed 38% higher mean seed yield (g/plant) than the muslin cloth bags. Re-used DWB03 bags were statistically on par with new bags for the seed yield per plant. On average, DWB03 bags produced 57% more hybrid seed set on CMS lines than the muslin cloth bags. The micro-climate in DWB03 bags appeared to be more conducive for good seed set as compared to the outside and muslin cloth bags. Purpose. To study in vitro the morphological and cytological characteristics of anthers, pollen and pistils of plants of the genus Miscanthus. Methods. Preparations of pistils, unpollinated seed buds, anthers and pollen, unstained or stained with a solution of carmine (2%) in acetic acid (45%) or methylene blue solution, were examined by light microscopy. Measurements for plants of different Miscanthus species, as well as counting the number of pollen of different diameters, were made in ten replicates. Results. The morphological and cytological characteristics of the reproductive organs of M. sinensis, M. sacchariflorus and M. giganteus species were studied. It was found that the flower of this plant is monoecious, containing both stamens and a pistil. The color of the anthers is yellow or pinkish-yellow, their tissues consist of elongated cells 70-100 μm long. The pistil has a two-column ovary with long (2.0-2.8 mm) pinnate stigmas which vary in color from white to bright pink. The shape of the pistil feather is moderately branched; length - 160-300 μm; width - 20-30 μm; alternate position; the number of small branches is 10-15 pcs. The pollen of different Miscanthus species differ in qualitative and quantitative characteristics, in particular in M. sinensis and M. sacchariflorus it is characterized by a rounded shape, evenness and uniformity (43-48 μm in diameter), whereas in M. giganteus it is more heterogeneous in size (23-45 μm in diameter). The pollen has a rounded, decorated pore with a diameter of 2.7-4.0 μm. Conclusions. According to the results of the conducted research, the morphological and cytological characteristics of the reproductive organs of M. sinensis, M. sacchariflorus and M. giganteus, namely: pistils, anthers and pollen, were provided. Premise: The number of open flowers on a plant (i.e., floral display size) can influence plant fitness by increasing pollinator attraction. However, diminishing marginal fitness returns with increasing floral display are expected as pollinators tend to visit more flowers per plant consecutively. An extended flower visitation sequence increases the fraction of ovules disabled by self‐pollination (ovule discounting) and reduces the fraction of a plant's own pollen that is exported to sire seeds in other plants (pollen discounting). Hermaphroditic species with a genetic system that prevents self‐fertilization (self‐incompatibility) would avoid ovule discounting and its fitness cost, whereas species without such a genetically based barrier would not. Contrarily, pollen discounting would be an unavoidable consequence of a large floral display irrespective of selfing barriers. Nevertheless, the increasing fitness costs of ovule and pollen discounting could be offset by respectively increasing ovule and pollen production per flower. Methods: We compiled data on floral display size and pollen and ovule production per flower for 1241 animal‐pollinated, hermaphroditic angiosperm species, including data on the compatibility system for 779 species. We used phylogenetic general linear mixed models to assess the relations of pollen and ovule production to floral display size. Results: Our findings provide evidence of increasing pollen production, but not of ovule production, with increasing display size irrespective of compatibility system and even after accounting for potentially confounding effects like flower size and growth form. Conclusions: Our comparative study supports the pollen‐discount expectation of an adaptive link between per‐flower pollen production and floral display across animal‐pollinated angiosperms. Premise: The relative per‐flower production of ovules and pollen varies broadly with angiosperm mating systems, with outcrossing types commonly producing more pollen grains per ovule than selfing types. The evolutionary causes of this variation are contentious, especially the relevance of pollination risk. Resolution of this debate may have been hampered by its focus on pollen:ovule (P:O) ratios rather than on the evolution of pollen and ovule numbers per se. Methods: Using published mean ovule and pollen counts, we analyzed associations with the proportion of removed pollen that reaches stigmas (pollen‐transfer efficiency) and differences between pollinator‐dependent and autogamous forms within and among species. Analyses involved Bayesian methods that simultaneously considered variation in pollen and ovule numbers and accounted for phylogenetic relatedness. We also assessed the utility of P:O ratios as mating‐system proxies and their association with female outcrossing rates. Results: Median pollen number declined consistently with pollen‐transfer efficiency among species, whereas median ovule number did not. Similarly, in both intraspecific and interspecific analyses, pollinator‐dependent plants produced more pollen than autogamous plants, whereas ovule production did not differ statistically. Distributions of P:O ratios overlapped extensively for self‐incompatible and self‐compatible species and for different mating‐system classes, and P:O ratios correlated weakly with outcrossing rate. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that pollinator dependence and pollination efficiency commonly influence the evolution of pollen number per flower but have more limited effects on ovule number. SUMMARY: The proper development of male and female gametophytes is critical for successful sexual reproduction and requires a carefully regulated series of events orchestrated by a suite of various proteins. RUVBL1 and RUVBL2, plant orthologues of human Pontin and Reptin, respectively, belong to the evolutionarily highly conserved AAA+ family linked to a wide range of cellular processes. Previously, we found that RUVBL1 and RUVBL2A mutations are homozygous lethal in Arabidopsis. Here, we report that RUVBL1 and RUVBL2A play roles in reproductive development. We show that mutant plants produce embryo sacs with an abnormal structure or with various numbers of nuclei. Although pollen grains of heterozygous mutant plants exhibit reduced viability and reduced pollen tube growth in vitro, some of the ruvbl pollen tubes are capable of targeting ovules in vivo. Similarly, some ruvbl ovules retain the ability to attract wild‐type pollen tubes but fail to develop further. The activity of the RUVBL1 and RUVBL2A promoters was observed in the embryo sac, pollen grains, and tapetum cells and, for RUVBL2A, also in developing ovules. Background: Glehnia littoralis is an economic herb with both medicinal and edible uses. It also has important ecological value and special phylogenetic status as it is a monotypic genus species distributing around beach. Little information on its reproductive biology has been reported so far, which has hindered conservation and application of this species. In this study, we observed morphological changes from buds emergence to seeds formation and internal changes during sporogenesis, gametophyte development and embryo and endosperm development of G. littoralis using paraffin-embedded-sectioning and stereo microscope. Results: The results showed that the stages of internal development events of G. littoralis corresponded to obvious external morphological changes, most of developmental features were consistent with other Apiaceae species. The development of male and female gametophytes was not synchronized in the same flower, however, exhibited temporal overlap. From mid-late April to mid-May, the anther primordial and ovule primordial developed into the trinucleate pollen grain and eight-nuclear embryo sac, respectively. From late-May to mid-July, the zygote developed into mature embryo. In addition, some defects in gynoecium or ovule development and abnormal embryo and endosperm development were found. We induced that the possible causes of abortion in G. littoralis were as follows: nutrient limitation, poor pollination and fertilization, and bad weather. Conclusions: This study revealed the whole process and morphological characteristics of the development of reproductive organ in G. littoralis, which not only provided important data for the study of systematic and conservation biology, but also provided a theoretical basis for cross breeding. Heat stress (HS) is one of the alarming issues today due to global warming and is the foremost detrimental to crop production. Maize is one of the versatile crops grown over different agro-climatic conditions. However, it is significantly sensitive to heat stress, especially during the reproductive phase. The heat stress tolerance mechanism is yet to be elucidated at the reproductive stage. Thus, the present study focused on identifying transcriptional changes in two inbreds, LM 11 (sensitive to HS) and CML 25 (tolerant to HS), under intense heat stress at 42°C during the reproductive stage from three tissues viz. flag leaf, tassel, and ovule. Samples from each inbred were collected after 5 days of pollinations for RNA isolation. Six cDNA libraries were constructed from three separate tissues of LM 11 and CML 25 and sequenced using an Illumina HiSeq2500 platform. A total of 2,164 (1127 up-regulated and 1037 down-regulated) differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified with 1151, 451, and 562 DEGs in comparisons of LM 11 and CML 25, corresponding to a leaf, pollen, and ovule, respectively. Functional annotated DEGs associated with transcription factors (TFs) viz. AP2, MYB, WRKY, PsbP, bZIP, and NAM, heat shock proteins (HSP20, HSP70, and HSP101/ClpB), as well as genes related to photosynthesis (PsaD & PsaN), antioxidation (APX and CAT) and polyamines (Spd and Spm). KEGG pathways analyses showed that the metabolic overview pathway and secondary metabolites biosynthesis pathway, with the involvement of 264 and 146 genes, respectively, were highly enriched in response to heat stress. Notably, the expression changes of the most common HSresponsive genes were typically much more significant in CML 25, which might explain why CML 25 is more heat tolerant. Seven DEGs were common in leaf, pollen, and ovule; and involved in the polyamines biosynthesis pathway. Their exact role in maize heat stress response would warrant further studies. The successful sexual reproduction of flowering plants depends upon double fertilisation, during which pollen grains, produced within the male floral organ (the anther) deliver two sperm cells to the ovule, buried deep within the ovary, triggering the development of the embryo and the surrounding tissues of the seed. Although much attention has been given to pollen and embryo development, less has been focused on the supporting tissues surrounding these organisms as they develop, the tapetum and the endosperm. Grain number and seed-setting rate are components of crop yield. Cytokinin influences grain yield. However, emerging studies suggest that high cytokinin signals often lead to reduced branching or seed-setting rate, leading to reduced grain yield, although the mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we identified and characterized the rice (Oryza sativa L.) gene LONELY GUY-LIKE 8 (LOGL8), based on analysis of the LOGL8-pm (promoter mutant of LOGL8) mutant, which harbors a T-DNA insertion in the promoter of this gene. The mutation in LOGL8-pm causes ectopic hyperexpression of LOGL8 in inflorescence organs, resulting in plants with smaller panicles and defective ovules lacking archesporial cells and integuments. Knockout of LOGL8 caused pollen abortion, leading to a reduced seed-setting rate. LOGL8 encodes a putative cytokinin-activating enzyme. Our results showed that LOGL8 directly catalyzes the biosynthesis of bioactive cytokinins. Therefore, we propose that the ectopic expression of LOGL8 disrupts cytokinin spatiotemporal distribution and causes inhibition of LONELY GUY (LOG), which affects panicle branching and female organ development. These findings reveal the important role of LOGL8 in male development, and highlight the delicate balance of local cytokinin levels during panicle branching and female organ development. Arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) are hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins containing a high proportion of carbohydrates, widely distributed in the plant kingdom and ubiquitously present in land plants. AGPs have long been suggested to play important roles in plant reproduction and there is already evidence that specific glycoproteins are essential for male and female gametophyte development, pollen tube growth and guidance, and successful fertilization. However, the functions of many of these proteins have yet to be uncovered, mainly due to the difficulty to study individual AGPs. In this work, we generated molecular tools to analyze the expression patterns of a subgroup of individual AGPs in different Arabidopsis tissues, focusing on reproductive processes. This study focused on six AGPs: four classical AGPs (AGP7, AGP25, AGP26, AGP27), one AG peptide (AGP24) and one chimeric AGP (AGP31). These AGPs were first selected based on their predicted expression patterns along the reproductive tissues from available RNA-seq data. Promoter analysis using β-glucuronidase fusions and qPCR in different Arabidopsis tissues allowed to confirm these predictions. AGP7 was mainly expressed in female reproductive tissues, more precisely in the style, funiculus, and integuments near the micropyle region. AGP25 was found to be expressed in the style, septum and ovules with higher expression in the chalaza and funiculus tissues. AGP26 was present in the ovules and pistil valves. AGP27 was expressed in the transmitting tissue, septum and funiculus during seed development. AGP24 was expressed in pollen grains, in mature embryo sacs, with highest expression at the chalazal pole and in the micropyle. AGP31 was expressed in the mature embryo sac with highest expression at the chalaza and, occasionally, in the micropyle. For all these AGPs a co-expression analysis was performed providing new hints on its possible functions. This work confirmed the detection in Arabidopsis male and female tissues of six AGPs never studied before regarding the reproductive process. These results provide novel evidence on the possible involvement of specific AGPs in plant reproduction, as strong candidates to participate in pollen-pistil interactions in an active way, which is significant for this field of study. Rice is a staple crop, feeding over half of the global population. The future demand of population growth and climate change requires substantial rice improvement. Recent advances in rice genomics have highlighted the vital role of the non-coding part of the genome. The protein-coding regions account for only a tiny portion of the eukaryotic genome, and most of the genomic regions transcribe copious amounts of non-coding RNAs. Of these, the long noncoding RNAs, including linear non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and circular noncoding RNAs (circRNAs), have been shown to play critical roles in various developmental processes by regulating the expression of genes and functions of proteins at transcriptional, post-transcriptional and post-translational levels. With the advances in next-generation sequencing technologies, a substantial number of long non-coding RNAs have been found to be expressed in plant reproductive organs in a cell- and tissue-specific manner suggesting their reproductive development-related functions. Accumulating evidence points towards the critical role of these non-coding RNAs in flowering, anther, and pollen development, ovule and seed development and photoperiod and temperature regulation of male fertility. In this mini review, we provide a brief overview of the role of the linear and circular long non-coding RNAs in rice reproductive development and control of fertility and crop yield. Valencian citriculture is oriented towards fresh production, which requires fruits with few seeds or seedless fruits. Consequently, parthenocarpic and self-incompatible varieties are mainly cultivated. However, some mandarin varieties, under favorable circumstances, induce seed formation in other mandarins by cross-pollination. This phenomenon depends on the germination capacity of the pollen of the pollinating variety, the number of ovules of the pollinated variety, the distance between them, and the abundance of pollinating insects. Previous studies in Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias (IVIA) have determined the ability to pollinate and be pollinated by all commercial varieties in Europe. Moreover, the Regional Government, Generalitat Valenciana, has georeferenced information on the cultivated varieties. We present two geostatistical models to estimate the risk of plots to be pollinated, depending on the varieties present in their environment, the number of plants, and their distance. Models are used to generate local and regional cross-pollination risk maps. Moreover, the robustness of these models to changes in the values assigned to their main parameters is assessed using different similarity calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Florivory in Chamaecrista varies in occurrence, intensity, and the floral structures affected. As flowers are multifunctional units, the type of damage can impact reproductive success in different ways. Oil‐resin‐secreting trichomes, present in the sepals of Chamaecrista species, section Absus, are suggested to inhibit florivory. We recorded florivory in Chamaecrista cathartica and Chamaecrista catharticoides in order to determine the frequency of damage, floral whorls most damaged, impact on reproduction, and effectiveness of secretory trichomes in inhibiting florivory. The study was conducted in the Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca, Brazil. Twenty individuals of each species were monitored monthly over two bloom periods to record the flowering intensity, rates of florivory, and fruit set and to determine the effectiveness of trichomes in inhibiting florivory. The two species had different flowering patterns, annual for C. cathartica and continuous for C. catharticoides, both more intense during summer. Florivory occurred mainly in the winter and affected floral structures unevenly, resulting in loss of different floral functions. Florivory reduced the fruit set of both species, but C. catharticoides was considerably more impacted. The diversity of damaged structures in C. catharticoides resulted in direct (reduced female and male fitness due to loss of ovules and pollen grains) and indirect (loss of floral resources and reduced floral attractiveness) impacts. Damage to the tubular petal could further result in loss of specialized pollination mechanisms mediated by this structure. What conditions select flowering patterns within inflorescences, or variation in the anthesis interval within inflorescences among plants? Under what conditions are gradual blooming and simultaneous blooming, both traits related to floral display size, advantageous? We constructed a simulation model in which the opening times and longevities of individual flowers within inflorescences, the sizes of attractive structures of individual flowers, and the numbers of ovules and pollen grains produced by individual flowers evolve. Individual plants in the population compete for pollinators, and plants are selected by pollinators according to their floral display sizes and amounts of resources allocated to attractive structures. We found that, if the proportion of pollen on a pollinator deposited on a stigma was low, gradual blooming did not evolve even if inbreeding depression was greater than 0.5. This is because the amount of outcross-pollen on pollinators decreased at a low rate during flower visits within a single inflorescence, and the selfing rate was suppressed to a low level even if the floral display size was large. On the other hand, if the proportion of pollen deposition was high, gradual blooming evolved even if inbreeding depression was smaller than 0.5. This may be because gradual blooming can enhance pollen delivery to other plants by reducing the loss of self-pollen by geitonogamy. On the other hand, allocation ratios among floral organs (female and male organs and attractive structures) were independent of the degree of simultaneous and gradual blooming within inflorescences. We concluded that the evolution of gradual blooming is more strongly affected by the proportion of pollen on a pollinator deposited on a stigma than by inbreeding depression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Serjania clematidifolia Cambess. has a monoecious sexual system with multicyclic dichogamy, i.e., staminate and pistillate flowers are produced in more than three phases. The present study evaluated the flowers in the different flowering phases of the species. For morphometric analyses, flowers were measured and the resulting values statistically analysed. For structural analyses, flowers were processed using standard light microscopy techniques. Serjania clematidifolia has white, unisexual, nectariferous, and zygomorphic monosymmetric flowers. In staminate flowers, the anthers are dehiscent, the endothecial cells have bar thickenings, the septum degenerates, and the stomium ruptures, releasing pollen grains in monads at the binucleate microgametophyte stage. In pistillate flowers, the anthers are indehiscent, the endothecial cells near the connective lack parietal thickening, the septum does not degenerate, the stomium does not rupture, and microgametophytes are not released. Male sterility in pistillate flowers is likely associated with structural changes in the endothecium and failures in the process of programmed cell death (PCD) of anther tissues. In pistillate flowers, the stigma is papillose and moist, and the ovary contains campylotropous, bitegmic ovules with seven-celled megagametophytes. In staminate flowers, the stigma has a non-papillose and non-secretory epidermis. The tissues of the style, ovary, and ovules show various levels of degeneration. Ovules may or may not contain megagametophytes. Female sterility in staminate flowers appears to be associated with failures in megagametophyte differentiation or PCD of its cells. We conclude that in S. clematidifolia , (i) the morphometric variation between staminate and pistillate flowers in different flowering phases does not indicate the existence of distinct floral types, (ii) there are no structural differences between staminate or pistillate flowers from different flowering phases, (iii) megagametophytes may or may not differentiate in ovules of staminate flowers, and (iv) microgametophytes differentiate in indehiscent anthers of pistillate flowers. Pollen grains are male gametophytes, an ephemeral haploid generation of plants, that commonly engage in competition for a limited supply of ovules. Since variation in reproductive capabilities among male gametophytes may influence the direction and pace of evolution in populations, we must be able to quantify the relative fitness of gametophytes from different sires. To explore this, we estimated the relative fitness of groups of male gametophytes in a dioecious, wind-pollinated model system, Cannabis sativa, by characterizing the non-abortion rate (measured via chemical staining) and viability (measured via in vitro germination) of pollen from multiple sires. Pollen viability quickly declined within two weeks of anther dehiscence, and pollen stored under freezer conditions did not germinate regardless of storage time. In contrast, pollen non-abortion rates declined slowly and persisted longer than the lifetime of a sporophyte plant under both room temperature and freezer conditions. Pollen samples that underwent both viability and non-abortion rate analysis displayed no significant correlation, implying that researchers cannot predict pollen viability from non-abortion rates, nor infer male gametophytic fitness from a single measure. A study was conducted to investigate the effect of different storage periods and temperatures on pollen viability in vitro and in vivo in plum genotypes 'Valerija', 'Čačanska Lepotica' and 'Valjevka'. In vitro pollen viability was tested at day 0 (fresh dry pollen) and after 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of storage at four different temperatures (4, −20, −80 and −196 °C), and in vivo after 12 months of storage at distinct temperatures. In vitro germination and fluorescein diacetate (FDA) staining methods were used to test pollen viability, while aniline blue staining was used for observing in vivo pollen tube growth. Fresh pollen germination and viability ranged from 42.35 to 63.79% ('Valjevka' and 'Čačanska Lepotica', respectively) and 54.58 to 62.15%, ('Valjevka' and 'Valerija', respectively). With storage at 4 °C, pollen viability and germination decreased over the period, with the lowest value after 12 months of storage. Pollen germination and viability for the other storage temperatures (−20, −80 and −196 °C) were higher than 30% by the end of the 12 months. Pollination using pollen stored at 4 °C showed that pollen tube growth mostly ended in the lower part of the style. With the other storage temperatures, pollen tube growth was similar, ranging between 50 and 100% of the pistils with pollen tubes penetrated into the nucellus of the ovule in the genotype 'Čačanska Lepotica'. While no significant differences in initial ovule number were found among oilseed rape Brassica napus genotypes, there was a large variation in effective ovule number (EON), which determines the final seeds per silique (SPS), a critical component of yield. In this study, we selected 18 oilseed rape Brassica napus genotypes with contrasting nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE) to unravel the main factors responsible for different EON and determine the critical period of EON formation under both a field and a pot experiments from 2016–2018. The high NUtE genotypes displayed significantly higher NUtE by 14.3%, along with greater yield per plant (29.4%) and SPS (21.1%) than the low NUtE genotypes. The greater productivity of the high NUtE genotypes was associated with 44.1% higher pollen grain number, 23.5% greater pollen viability, and 39.3% lower ovule abortion rate, compared to the low NUtE genotypes. In addition, the heart stage was the critical ovule development period for delineating the variability of EON among contrasting NUtE oilseed rape Brassica napus genotypes, when the high NUtE genotypes displayed higher silique net photosynthetic rate, surface area, biomass, and RNA expression levels. Taken together, this study indicated the pollen grain number, pollen viability and ovule abortion rate contributed to the final variation in EON and the heart stage was the critical period of determining the EON differences among contrasting NUtE genotypes. Increasing pollen grain number and pollen viability, and decreasing ovule abortion rate before heart stage should be the prerequisite for breeders to improve yield and NUtE of oilseed rape Brassica napus genotypes. Reproductive interference (RI), an interspecific mating interaction that reduces the fitness of at least one of the species involved, can lead to exclusive distributions in closely related species. A hypothesis previously proposed is that RI in plants may occur by ovule usurpation, in which pistils lack interspecific incompatibility and mistakenly accept heterospecific pollen, thereby losing an opportunity for conspecific pollen fertilization. However, few comparative studies have evaluated the consistency of the inferred mechanism within and among individuals and populations. We conducted hand-pollination experiments in six populations of three native Taraxacum species that suffered from different levels of RI from an alien congener, T. officinale, and compared pollen–pistil interactions among populations. We also investigated the interactions for eight individual T. japonicum plants whose response to heterospecific pollen deposition had been previously measured. Our results revealed that pollen tubes often penetrated native ovaries following heterospecific pollination in populations suffering from strong RI, whereas they seldom did in populations suffering from marginal RI. However, the relative frequency of the pollen tube penetration was not significantly related to the strength of alien RI. Not all pistils on an individual plant showed the same pollen receptivity following heterospecific pollination; rather, some accepted and some refused the pollen tubes. The relationship between pollen tube penetration following heterospecific pollination and the strength of the alien RI was also not significant among individuals. Our present results generally support the ovule usurpation hypothesis, but suggest that other factors, such as competition for pollinator services, variation in the effects of heterospecific pollen donors, and condition of the native inflorescences, might also affect the observed RI strength. Summary: Generally, in gymnosperms, pollination and fertilization events are temporally separated and the developmental processes leading the switch from ovule integument into seed coat are still unknown. The single ovule integument of Ginkgo biloba acquires the typical characteristics of the seed coat long before the fertilization event. In this study, we investigated whether pollination triggers the transformation of the ovule integument into the seed coat.Transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses performed on ovules just prior and after pollination lead to the identification of changes occurring in Ginkgo ovules during this specific time.A morphological atlas describing the developmental stages of ovule development is presented. The present study describes the floral morphology and evaluates pollen viability for the bromeliad Nidularium minutum Mez. during the flowering period 2018‒2019 through histochemistry and pollen germination tests. The inflorescences are nidular, capituliform with short branches bearing two to three odourless, bisexual and greenish-white flowers and with an androecium shorter than the gynoecium, consisting of six stamens with anthers featuring rimose dehiscence. The ovules are anatropous, displaying a small appendage in the chalazal region. The first flower opened in late November 2018 and flowering peak was in January 2019. Anthesis started at 6:55 a.m. and lasted until 8:49 a.m. Pollen/ovule ratio indicates facultative autogamy. The pollen grains are monads, medium to large, 2-(3)-porate, reticulate heterobrochate with abundant pollenkitt. A high frequency of unviable pollen grains with discrepant sizes was observed. The mature pollen grain is considered recalcitrant and therefore sensitive to desiccation. In vitro pollen germination after 48 hours was higher in BKM medium (64.77%) compared to SM (38.51%). Pollen viability was overestimated in all histochemistry tests, with Alexander (72.46%) being the closest to the in vitro germination rate. The results obtained for N. minutum bring new information about its floral biology as a subsidy to the cultivation of ornamental bromeliads that are at risk of extinction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Some economically important crop species are dioecious, producing pollen and ovules on distinct, unisexual, individuals. On-the-spot diagnosis of sex is important to breeders and farmers for crop improvement and maximizing yield, yet diagnostic tools at the seedling stage are understudied and lack a scientific basis. Understanding sexual dimorphism in juvenile plants may provide key ecological, evolutionary and economic insights into dioecious plant species in addition to improving the process of crop cultivation. To address this gap in the literature, we asked: can we reliably differentiate males, females, and co-sexual individuals based on seedling morphology in Cannabis sativa, and do the traits used to distinguish sex at this stage vary between genotypes? To answer these questions, we collected data on phenotypic traits of 112 C. sativa plants (50 female, 52 male, 10 co-sexuals) from two hemp cultivars (CFX-1, CFX-2) during the second week of vegetative growth and used ANOVAs to compare morphology among sexes. We found males grew significantly longer hypocotyls than females by week 2, but this difference depended on the cultivar investigated. Preliminary evidence suggests that co-sexual plants may be distinguished from male and female plants using short hypocotyl length and seedling height, although this relationship requires more study since sample sizes of co-sexual plants were small. In one of the cultivars, two-week old male plants tend to produce longer hypocotyls than other plants, which may help to identify these plants prior to anthesis. We call for increased research effort on co-sexual plants, given their heavy economic cost in industrial contexts and rare mention in the literature. Our preliminary data suggests that short hypocotyl length may be an indicator of co-sexuality. These results are the first steps towards developing diagnostic tools for predicting sex using vegetative morphology in dioecious species and understanding how sexual dimorphism influences phenotype preceding sexual maturity. γ-Tubulin complex protein 4 (GCP4, encoded by AT3G53760) participates in microtubule (MT) nucleation in Arabidopsis thaliana, affecting the MT nucleation angles in cortical MTs, and the formation of the spindle and phragmoplasts during mitosis. Here, we report that GCP4 plays a critical role in gametophyte development. The results indicate that the gcp4 mutant caused by T-DNA insertion may express an aberrant gene product interfering with normal GCP4 expression, ultimately leading to the formation of desiccated ovules and aborted seeds. An analysis of transmission efficiency (TE) indicated that female gametophytes were more impaired in development than male gametophytes, and so observation and analysis of gametophyte defects were conducted. Complementation lines obtained by the native promoter and GCP4-coded CDS gene sequence fused with GFP reduced the numbers of lethal phenotypes of the gcp4 mutant. The localization of GCP4 in the gametophyte was detected in cytoplasm around nuclei and in vicinity of plasma membrane of pollen grains, and also detected in full cytoplasm and around the nuclei of ovules in complementation line. This research aimed to explore the reproductive characteristics of three species of Psidium (P. guajava L., P. cattleyanum Sabine, and P. guineense Sw.) and estimate a probable reproduction strategy based on the pollen:ovule (P:O) methodology. The number of pollen grains per floral bud (NGPB), number of pollen grains per anther (NGPA), number of anthers per flower bud (NAB), number of ovules per flower bud (NOB), and the P:O ratio of each species were estimated. All species had a P:O ratio over 2,000 and were classified as xenogamous. P.guajava presented the highest values for all characteristics evaluated, with the NGPB at 3,777,519, the NOB at 584.50 and a P:O ratio of 6,462.82. Similarly, P. cattleyanum had a P:O ratio of 5,649.89 (NGPB 762,736 and NOB 135). However, P. guineense was considered facultative xenogamous, with P:O of 2,085.75, the NGPB at 741,484 and the NOB at 355.50. Thus, it was concluded that the studied species have a preference for allogamy and require many pollen grains to fertilize each ovule, demonstrating that the transfer of pollen to the stigma is not very specialized. We examine investment in male function in the context of geography and floral morphology in the plant ring species Euphorbia tithymaloides, which colonized the Caribbean from Mexico/Guatemala along two fronts that roughly correspond to the Greater and the Lesser Antilles and that meet in the vicinity of the Anegada Passage. Our results on investment in pollen relative to ovule production are consistent with E. tithymaloides relying on pollinators for reproduction across its range in the Caribbean. We document a geographic pattern of reduction in anther number and pollen:ovule ratios in populations of E. tithymaloides towards the Anegada Passage, which is consistent with a possible geographic transition towards a mixed breeding system where selfing has increased importance in this area where its two expansion fronts meet. The reduction in pollen production is correlated with inflorescence morphology, which converges to relatively shorter cyathia towards the Anegada Passage along both fronts. Cimicifuga simplex has three genetically and ecologically distinct pollination morphs with different flowering phenology, flower sex expressions, and selfing rates. A previous study showed that strong protandry in hermaphroditic flowers of C. simplex causes there to be seasonal minority sexes; for example, unisexual female ramets are advantageous in the first half of the flowering season and bloom then (minority sex hypothesis). That study, however, did not distinguish among the three pollination morphs of C. simplex. We investigated seasonal sex ratio changes and pollinator environments of the three morphs to verify and expand the minority sex hypothesis. We investigated flowering phenology, pollinator quantity and quality, seasonal population sex ratio dynamics, and stamen/ovule ratios in hermaphroditic flowers. We also examined the seasonal female reproductive success of hermaphroditic flowers, and the effect of male flower excision on fruit set by morph II hermaphroditic flowers. Morph I (mainly hermaphroditic and female ramets) had high pollinator quality and quantity. Fruit set of hermaphroditic ramets was high throughout the flowering season. Morph II (hermaphroditic and andromonoecious ramets) had low pollinator quality, and few pollinators visited near the beginning and end of the season. Removal of male flowers led to a pollen limitation. Morph III (hermaphroditic ramets and a high selfing rate) had very low pollinator abundance throughout the flowering season, and male and female phases largely overlapped. The scarcity of male flowers in morph I is likely a result of the high pollinator quantity and quality. The high fruit set suggests that no pollen limitation existed. The low pollinator quality and quantity of the morph II population caused it to suffer from pollen limitation and may explain the absence of unisexual female ramets in this morph. The high selfing rate of morph III may be due to the extremely low pollinator abundance. Theoretical studies have indicated that the optimal investment allocation to male and female functions depends on whether a pollen limitation exists. This work describes the application of clearing on vibratome sections to study the embryo formation in cassava. This procedure provides high-resolution images and reduces significantly the number of sections that need to be analyzed per ovule. This methodology was instrumental for the development of the protocol for embryo rescue in cassava. It has been also applied to monitor the embryo formation response when optimizing seed setting from regular and broad crosses for cassava breeding. Broad crosses between cassava and castor bean (incompatible-euphorbiaceae species) were made aiming to induce doubled haploids through the elimination of the incompatible-male parent genome as done in cereals. Castor bean is widely available and provides continues supply of pollen. Our results suggest that this methodology is easy and effective to assess the response of hundreds of cassava ovules pollinated with castor bean pollen, allowing the identification of multicellular structures in the embryo sac without apparent formation of endosperm. The protocol is also useful when developing and optimizing a methodology to induce doubled haploids in cassava via gynogenesis or from ovules pollinated with irradiated cassava pollen. Background: Declining resources due to climate change may endanger the persistence of populations by reducing fecundity and thus population fitness via effects on gamete production. The optimal mode of generative reproduction allocates the limited resources to ovule and pollen production in proportions that maximize the number of fertilized ovules in the population. In order to locate this optimum and derive reproduction modes that compensate for declined resources to maintain reproductive success, a model of gamete production, pollen dispersal, and ovule fertilization is developed. Specification of opportunities for compensation is given priority over specification of physiological or evolutionary mechanisms of adaptation. Thus model parameters summarize gametic production resources, resource investment per gamete, resource allocation as proportion of resources invested in ovules, and pollen density as size of the pollen dispersal range and proportion of pollen retained within the range. Retained pollen disperses randomly, and an ovule is fertilized if at least one pollen settles on its surface. The outcome is the expected number of fertilized ovules. Results: Maximization of fertilization success is found to require the investment of more gametic production resources in ovules than in pollen, irrespective of the parameter values. Resource decline can be compensated by adjusting the resource allocation if the maximum expected number of fertilized ovules after the decline is not less than the expected number the population experienced before the decline. Compensation is also possible under some conditions by increasing the pollen density, either by raising a low pollen retention or by shrinking the dispersal range. Conclusion: Fertilization success in populations affected by resource decline may be maintainable by adjustment of the sexual allocation of gametic production resources or by increasing pollen density. The formation and development of reproductive organs and fruits was examined for two edible honeysuckle species Lonicera edulis Turcz. ex. Freyn. and Lonicera kamtchatica (Sevast.) Pojark. 'Gerda' using cytological and embryological methods. We found out that the flower initiation has began during June in the conditions of southwestern Slovakia. Male and female archespores were differentiated before entering winter dormancy. In most cases we have observed normally developed tetrads, normal appearance of microspores, two-celled polen grains and mature pollen grain. In both species a sufficient amount of normally developed pollen grains was observed. Disturbances during female gametophyte development occurred occasionally, most mature ovules contained 7 cells female gametophyte. Our research pointed to fact that the species are protogynous. Flowering usually takes place in the first half of April. The fruits were mature in the second half of May. We have found that 10 to 11 fully developed seeds have evolved in the fruits of both representatives of Lonicera on average. The above results show the suitability of L. edulis and L. kamtchatica cultivation in SW Slovakia with a relatively low risk of fruit loss due to climatic conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
