The Kuzbas (short for the Kuznetsk Basin in Western Siberia) was the largest coal mining region and one of the most important industrial centers in the Soviet Union. This chapter, after a short introduction of the history of the Autonomous Industrial Colony (AIC) that had been established in Siberia with the help of American workers, will focus on the American perspectives on Kuzbas as a real chance to build a workers’ utopia and discuss what had been promised to be achievable in Siberia. The voices of those who worked and later returned from Siberia will be compared with the arguments of those who did not believe the terrible reports that were brought back from the Soviet Union, the place where a worker could eventually be freed from the harrowing chains of capitalism.

Das 21. Jahrhundert beginnt mit zahlreichen Krisen: politische Unterdrückung, nationale Spaltungen, Klimakrise und Corona-Pandemie. Damit wächst auch das revolutionäre Potenzial, die Welt zu verändern. Frank Jacob diskutiert, welche Rolle Revolutionen in diesem Jahrhundert spielen können, wie sie ablaufen und was es zu beachten gilt, um eine moralische Korrumpierung revolutionärer Prozesse zu verhindern. Neben einem analytischen Zehn-Stufen-Modell stellt er grundlegende Aspekte vor, die über Erfolg und Misserfolg von Revolutionen entscheiden, und reflektiert diese mit besonderem Blick auf die Gegenwart.

This chapter introduced key problems related to rather understudied ties between radicals in their European, American, and thereby transatlantic contexts. It tries to highlight the issues individuals faced with regard to the genesis and the later use of existent networks of transnational radicalism. Furthermore, the introduction highlights the structure of the book that will in the first part focus on organizational ties of radical political parties as well as press networks that connected Europe with the Americas (ch. 2-5). The second part then discusses the roles of individuals who acted as mediators between the two continents in many different ways (ch. 6-10).

This chapter deals with the repatriation of Japanese prisoners of war taken by the Soviet Union and the discussions about their fate in the Allied Council for Japan. General Douglas MacArthur had initially planned to keep his occupation of Japan a local issue limited to the national level, but the early Cold War and its diplomacy turned him and the Japanese POWs into transnational actors in the broader East Asian and global context. The role of POWs in Japanese society was also disputed, especially since they were regarded as a possible fifth column for the communist menace in the region. These national and transnational aspects of the history of Japanese POWs who returned from the Soviet Union to MacArthur’s Japan have not received enough scholarly attention.

In Japan, communism in general and the Japanese Communist Party in particular were often considered to be a menace for the integrity of the state. Consequently, communists, who were in addition considered to act on behalf of orders from Moscow and the Communist International, were persecuted by the state, especially in times of war. The present chapter will reconstruct and describe the history of this persecution while highlighting its continuities and discontinuities from the end of the Sino-Japanese War in 1895 until the US occupation period in the 1940s and early 1950s.

Die Russische Revolution von 1917, die in Wirklichkeit aus mehreren Erhebungen bestand, bildet die Zäsur zwischen »langem« 19. und »kurzem« 20. Jahrhundert und leitete das sogenannte »Zeitalter der Extreme« (Eric Hobsbawm) ein. Viele, die an den Erfolg der Revolution geglaubt hatten, wurden von den tatsächlichen Entwicklungen bitter enttäuscht. Wieder einmal war eine Revolution nicht dazu in der Lage gewesen, das zu erreichen, was von vielen erwartet, ja herbeigesehnt wurde. Die revolutionäre Erhebung des Februar 1917 endete mit ihrer Korrumpierung im Oktober desselben Jahres. Frank Jacob widmet sich auf Basis eines analytischen Vergleichsmodells der Frage nach dem Prozess dieser Korrumpierung und zeigt, ob diese einer zwangsläufigen Entwicklung der Ereignisse oder vielmehr dem Machtwillen einiger weniger geschuldet war.

The European consumer demands made the Atlantic an ocean of slave traders and started an economic exploitation process whose impacts, such as global diasporas and extreme poverty in regions of the so-called Global South, remain visible. The Atlantic trade was definitely as much pan-European as it was pan-American, and soon would include the Pacific World as well. “Western Africa was pulled more firmly into the Atlantic orbit than large parts of Europe” and was forced to provide the human factor needed in the New World to keep the stream of commodity supplies running. The Atlantic World was maybe the first laboratory for a broader globalization process and therefore deserves further attention. The process of globalization, not only with regard to its impacts and effects in Europe, is worth studying to show how and why societies have changed during this specific process. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.

Despite the fact that one would not usually connect the history of the Nation of Islam with that of Japan, the interrelationship of American religion and Japanese imperial ambitions is especially visible in the history of the Nation. Japan's interest in the Islamic world became especially strong as a consequence of its antagonism toward the Russian Empire, where many Muslims were longing for liberation. This chapter presents a survey of the Islam-oriented policy of Japan from the end of the Russo-Japanese War until the Second World War. It discusses the Nation of Islam and its branches to highlight the existing bonds between the Nation and Japan. The chapter provides the international perspective on the Nation of Islam as well as a description of Japanese war-oriented strategies of cultural counter-insurgency. Black Nationalism in the United States was in most forms a separatist movement, because it aspired to segregation from the existing white-dominated society.

Die starke Verbreitung von Angeboten, die Nachfrager in ihrem Alltag unterstutzen, fuhrt innerhalb der Forschung zu einer zunehmenden Auseinandersetzung mit den Nutzungsprozessen der Nachfrager. Eine theoretische Grundlage fur diese Auseinandersetzung bietet die Service-Dominant Logic of Marketing. Sie geht davon aus, dass die eigentliche Nutzenentfaltung fur einen Nachfrager nicht durch den blosen Produktbesitz, sondern erst im Nutzungsprozess in Form von Value-in-Use entsteht. Bislang existiert jedoch keine allgemein anerkannte Methode, mit deren Hilfe sich Nutzungsprozesse erfassen und im Hinblick auf den Value-in-Use analysieren lassen. Im Beitrag wird daher eine Methode zur Erfassung des Value-in-Use vorgeschlagen. Hierzu wird auf die Repertory-Grid-Methode zuruckgegriffen, welche gemas den zugrundeliegenden theoretischen Annahmen adaptiert und im Rahmen einer qualitativen Studie zur Smartphone-Nutzung empirisch getestet wird. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse ermoglichten die Erarbeitung einer spezifischen Value-in-Use-Skala. Eine quantitative Studie validierte diese abschliesend. Die adaptierte Repertory-Grid-Methode wird folglich als ein vielversprechender Ansatz zur Erfassung von Nutzungsprozessen und dem dabei entstehenden Value-in-Use betrachtet.

The premise that a Military Revolution impelled European powers into an era of global hegemony during the Early Modern period is not supported by contemporary events. The conquest of Mexico and Peru, the two most important colonial acquisitions by a European state during that era, were accomplished without the application of the technology or tactics that are usually associated with the Military Revolution. On the other hand, Japan, Korea, some Indian states, and the Ottoman Empire implemented military reforms, both tactical and technological, that are commonly associated with what was considered an exclusively Western approach to warfare.

Mobile phones, which have been adopted faster than any other technology in human history, are the visible expressions of a technology-oriented consumer (Jack and Suri, 2010). Although this image is mainly associated with the iPhone in Asian, European, or North American contexts, the spread of mobile phone technology has been even faster and successful in Africa. In fact, the developing countries of Africa were the winners of the new mobile phone technology. The transformation processes caused by these new technologies were nowhere as decisive as in sub-Saharan Africa, where mobile phone and its possibilities created tremendous economic and social change. The most well-known concept of success is the Kenyan M-PESA or mobile money—the M stands for mobile and PESA means cash in Swahili (Hughes and Lonie, 2007). In just four weeks, Safaricom, the company that launched the mobile pay system, registered more than 20,000 new customers for M-PESA, and between its introduction in March 2007 and 2009, its customer base grew to over six million in Kenya (Mas and Morawczynski, 2009).

Kundenintegration ist bereits seit langerem Gegenstand der betriebswirtschaftlichen Forschung, insbesondere des Marketings. Begriffsgrundlage ist ein verandertes Verstandnis von der Rolle des Kunden beim marktlichen Austausch. Statt passiver Abnehmer zu sein leistet der Kunde aktive Beitrage vor, wahrend und nach dem Austauschprozess. Gegenwartig lassen sich vier verschiedene Anwendungs- und Forschungslinien zum Thema nachzeichnen: das industrielle Losungsgeschaft, Mass Customization, Co-Creation bei Dienstleistungen und Value-Co-Creation. Zukunftig ist zu erwarten, dass insbesondere die Moglichkeiten des Web 2.0 zur praktischen und konzeptionellen Weiterentwicklung der Kundenintegration beitragen werden. Web 2.0 manifestiert sich in Moderator-zentrierten Ansatzen wie Crowdsourcing, Schwarmkreativitat und Open Innovation zum einen und Community-orientierten Ansatzen wie Social Network Sites zum anderen. Fur die theoretische Durchdringung darauf aufbauender Zukunftskonzepte der Kundenintegration kommt der Theorie des Sozialkapitals und der Theorie der grenzenlosen Unternehmung eine herausragende Bedeutung zu.

Kundenintegration bindet den Kunden aktiv in die Wertschopfung ein und hilft so, individuell abgestimmte Angebote zu entwickeln. Kundenintegration ist deshalb vor allem ein Thema fur den Vertrieb als Bindeglied zwischen Anbieter und Kunde. Doch um Bedurfnisstrukturen aufzudecken und in Leistungsbundel zu uberfuhren, muss der Vertrieb besondere Anforderungen erfullen.

Die Grundungsforschung gehort zu den jungeren Teildisziplinen der Betriebswirtschaftslehre. Bis in die 70er Jahre wurden sowohl ihre volkswirtschaftliche Bedeutung als auch die Besonderheiten kleiner bzw. junger Unternehmen weitgehend verkannt (Sahlmann et al. 1999, S. 1). Wenngleich das Interesse an Grundungs- und Fruhentwicklungsthemen in Literatur und Praxis inzwischen deutlich gestiegen ist (o.V. 2012), werden die Erfordernisse an Unternehmensgrundungen oftmals verkurzt dargestellt. Assoziationen, die die Figur des Unternehmers betreffen, wie etwa „die Initiative ergreifen“, „proaktiv sein“, „sich selbst verwirklichen“, zeichnen allzu oft ein euphemistisches Bild der neu ergriffenen Unternehmerrolle (Bogenhold 2002, S. 25). Die tatsachliche Situation ist haufig ernuchternder, handelt es sich doch im Einzelfall um hochst vielschichtige wirtschaftliche sowie soziale Prozesse, die eingehend analysiert und verstanden werden mussen.
