Within the institution of family welfare in the People's Republic of China, the role of the child as future caregiver is so deeply institutionalized as to be almost invisible to policy makers and family members. This article explores institutional responses to the death of a child after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake to demonstrate how this taken-for-grantedness of the child caregiver role has opened up bereaved parents to social risk, and how actors must perform institutional work to "repair the breach" of the loss of a child in a family. Findings show that after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, policy actors took steps to manipulate entrenched family welfare resources, including the population and family planning regulations, to enable bereaved parents to have another child. In so doing, they sought to patch and restore meaning to the family welfare institution, enabling it to continue autopoiesis and resist institutional change in the face of exogenous shock. Use of policy and the positive representation of the policy outcomes in the state-led media enabled sensegiving to be imbued into an otherwise emotionally conflicted decision to try to conceive again soon after the loss of a child.

This article examines how Väestöliitto, the Finnish Population and Family Welfare League, developed into a housing policy expert during the 1940s and 1950s. Through frame analysis, I outline how Väestöliitto constructed urbanisation and ‘barrack cities’, i.e. an urban, tenement-based environment, as a social problem and how, respectively, it framed ‘garden cities’ as a solution. In the 1940s, Väestöliitto promoted a national body for centralised housing policy and national planning. When the ARAVA laws (1949) turned out to be a mere financing system, Väestöliitto harnessed its expertise into more concrete action. In 1951, together with five other NGOs, Väestöliitto founded the Housing Foundation and embarked on a project for constructing a model city. This garden city became the residential suburb Tapiola. This marked a paradigm shift in Finnish town planning and housing policy, which had until then lacked a holistic and systematic approach. Along the 1940s–1950s, Väestöliitto thus constructed and developed its expertise from an influential interest organisation to a concrete housing policy actor.

The welfare regime of Southern Europe, and Greece in particular, does not adequately cover the needs of its citizens. On the contrary, and within this context, family welfare has to be much more efficient. Moreover, the support received from the family imposes a sense of reciprocity, as receivers are expected to be givers in the future. This reciprocity is assisted mainly by the female members of the kin, defining to a degree their housing practices. Data for this paper is derived from a wider research project investigating young people's housing practices and family strategies through in-depth interviews in Athens, Greece. Bringing gender to the fore, it explores how the housing provision from family is impacted by the receivers’ gender role in connection to family welfare obligations.

Empowerment of Family Welfare or often abbreviated as PKK is a movement that has been built from the center to the village and its existence and benefits have been felt by the community. This PKK activity is reflected in the 10 PKK Principal Programs, one of which is focused on health and attention specifically aimed at maternal and child health. So that an Integrated Service Post (Posyandu) was formed consisting of trained Posyandu cadres. These trained Posyandu cadres are not only seen from the way they handle maternal and child health but also must be supported by their ability to use computers in the process of recording and data collection. However, not all PKK and Posyandu Cadres, especially in villages, are adept at using computers, for example, PKK Cadres and Patikraja Village Posyandu. In fact, many cadres are new to computers and cannot use standard programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word. The goal of this community service program is to improve the capabilities and competencies of PKK Cadres and Patikraja Village Posyandu in operating computers to support good and smooth performance in terms of administration and data collection. Based on the results of the evaluation it was seen that PKK cadres and the Patikraja Village Posyandu attended the training with great enthusiasm and they were able to practice the material very well.

Abstract This article gathers the intervention experience of an interdisciplinary team of professionals in a project led by the national family welfare institute (ICBF in Spanish) for the strengthening of integral community homes in the neighborhood Alfonso Bonilla Aragón, in Cali, during the period 2018 - 2019. This experience rescued, through permanent dialogue, the quotidian know-how of the participants. To this end, the work of the professionals linked to the project is described, highlighting the daily accompaniment actions carried out with children, their families and community mothers. The aim was to investigate how these actions were articulated with professional work in a vulnerable sector and whether or not they generated a significant contribution to the initial education of infants in the community homes. The participants were approached by means of different qualitative techniques such as documentary analysis, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires, and priority was given to their thoughts and feelings, contrasting these with the reality of early childhood in the country and the challenges we face as a society in guaranteeing the rights of children under five years old.

The launch of the Troubled Families Programme in 2011 has thrown into sharp relief how governments develop policies and practices to intervene in the lives of so‐called ‘troubled families’. Commentators were quick to make comparisons with historic efforts to rehabilitate ‘problem families’ in the post‐war period. However, beyond discursive similarities, there are also marked continuities in how family policies have been developed and implemented. This review narrates the rise, fall and rise of concern about ‘problem’ and ‘troubled’ families in England in the context of anxieties about child and family welfare, and the appropriate response of the state.

Addressing unmet need for family planning is one of the major immediate objectives of India’s Population Policy, 2000 (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), National Population Policy, 2000. New Delhi: Department of Family Welfare, Ministry Health and Family Welfare, Government of India). The policy also advocates the involvement of elected leaders of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in addressing unmet need for family planning. Besides, the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) also highlights the importance of PRIs and other community leaders in addressing family planning services. The 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992, also guarantees panchayats to take responsibility of health and family welfare. To know the actual involvement of community leaders in addressing unmet need for family planning, the field survey was carried out in the coastal part of Odisha. With the help of mixed methods, the actual participation of community leaders in family planning is found negligible. The field study including surveys and in-depth interviews of health workers and community leaders reveals that lack of financial allocation for family planning activities in Gaon Kalyan Samiti (GKS), lack of funds for the village health plans, lack of inter-departmental coordination, lack of trust and confidence between the workers and leaders, lack of initiative by the workers to involve leaders and lack of incentives for community leaders are the major reasons for non-participation of community leaders in family planning activities.

The issue of marital rape in India is one example of violence against women where the victim suffers both physically and psychologically at the hands of somebody close to them. But unfortunately, marital rape is not recognised as a crime under the Indian law. The present paper focuses on examining some of the vital socio-cultural and legal reasons that play a significant role in prohibiting criminalisation of marital rape in India.

In recent times, women have been increasingly engaged in migration, in spite of the risks and challenges involved. The study examines the history of women’s migration in West Africa, paying particular attention to Ejigbo-Yoruba women in Cote d’Ivoire. In order to earn income, alleviate poverty and create support platforms for family welfare, Ejigbo-Yoruba women from Nigeria have used migration as a coping mechanism. The study examined the prevalent trends of women’s migration, its implications and the ongoing trends from the perspective of the data collected by means of a qualitative methodology. The study concludes that the functionality of inter-regional mobility as practised by Ejigbo-Yoruba women migrants should be utilised as a platform for reducing poverty and fostering growth and development within the sub-region.

This study aims to throw light on questions of 20th-century rural housing construction using standard plans with features differing from traditional architecture, and how this was related to lifestyle. Houses built to standard plans are significant not only from the architectural viewpoint but also as regards modernisation and the changing lifestyle. These houses are often the forerunners of modernisation and innovations, setting a pattern. The state projects in the interwar years were also responses to the deepening social crisis. The ONCSA (National Folk and Family Welfare Fund) movement was undoubtedly the most influential among the construction projects using standard plans in the interwar years, not only because of the numbers involved (more than 10,000 houses were built), but also because of the level of preparation and organisation.Construction with state support and using standard plans continued after the Second World War. A number of independent settlements were created in the early 1950s using ...

In the era of the sustainable development goals, India is committed to reduce its maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per one lakh live births by 2030. An important strategy that was adopted in the Reproductive and Child Health Programme in 2010 was maternal death review. Analysis of the progress so far has brought to light certain gaps which have prompted the paradigm shift toward Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR), which focuses on taking action on information obtained from every maternal death so as to prevent further maternal deaths. The new guidelines on MDSR were released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2017.

This paper analyzes the link between young people's sense (locus) of control over their lives and their investments in education. We find that young people with a more internal locus of control have a higher probability of finishing secondary school and, conditional on completion, meeting the requirements to obtain a university entrance rank. Moreover, those with an internal locus of control who obtain a university entrance rank achieve somewhat higher rankings than do their peers who have a more external locus of control. Not surprisingly, there is a negative relationship between growing up in disadvantage and educational outcomes. However, this effect does not appear to operate indirectly by increasing the likelihood of having a more external locus of control. In particular, we find no significant relationship between family welfare history and young people's locus of control.

Estimates of the economic value of unpaid household and farm work of Alberta farm women and men are calculated using two common market alternative cost methods. Time use data for 1984 collected by Doherty and Keating (1985) from 414 Alberta grain farm families as well as Statistics Canada wage data are used. The average annual value of unpaid farm work ranges from $20,647.35 to $29,088.24 for men and from $5,017.54 to $6,604.19 for women. Conversely, unpaid household work performed by women has an average annual value of $17,460.98 to $34,617.66, while the value of men's unpaid household work ranges from $1,943.02 to $3,962.54 annually. When the values of farm and household production and the income generated by off-farm work are accounted for, there is little difference between mend's and womend's total contributions to the economic well-being of the farm family. These estimates illustrate the importance of family membersd' unpaid work to the economic well-being of the family. They also suggest that there is little basis for the historic inequity of legal and other social systems that neglect the economic value of womend's contributions to family welfare.
