Abstract The present study combined spatial distribution and mechanism of seismicity, seismicity parameters, geomorphology in satellite imagery and tectonic features in Makran inland to show that the Makran low angle thrust fault is divided into two separate segments. Depth dispersal of earthquakes, especially relocated events, shows that the sinking plate is steeper in the west than in the east of Makran. Significant facts were identified from the variation of Moho depth between west and east, slip rates of the inland faults and crustal shortenings in the north of Makran. The Sistan suture zone plays a significant role in dividing the overriding plate into a non-deforming Helmand block and a less deforming Lut block. These blocks have different resistances against the northward subduction. Large and great events, such as the 1989 Chabahar (M W 5.5) and 1945 Gwadur (M W 8.1), occurred in the south of subduction fronts of the western and eastern Makran, respectively. They occurred in shallow depth and were the pieces of evidence of weak and strong coupling between the oceanic and continental crusts on a low angle and a very low angle reverse faults, respectively. Spectral analysis and depth determination of the instrumental and pre instrumental earthquakes, respectively, helped to separate some plate boundary and intraplate events. This separation, geometry and non-characteristic behavior of the subduction zone, revealed from spatial and temporal distribution of the earthquakes, probably dedicate a mature Aleutian type for the subduction zone in the east. Missing great (M > 6.1) earthquakes, less slip rate of the continental faults and steeper dipping of the sinking plate in the west probably indicate a Kurile type for the Iranian part of subduction. Makran is a bimodal subduction, because geomorphological and seismic pieces of evidence indicate a NNW surficial and right lateral fracture zone in the continental crust and a NW deep and left lateral fracture zone in the oceanic crust, respectively. The fractures and geometry of subductions showed that the eastern Makran has seismotectonically a wider area for potential coupling of a larger earthquake than the western Makran. Evaluation of active tectonism by means of geomorphic indices has provided crucial semi-quantitative data for evaluating seismic hazards in a fault zone in a semiarid area of the Zagros Mountains of Iran where tectonic rates are low-to-moderate and there are few Quaternary dates. Quaternary activity along the seismically active but poorly understood Sabzpushan fault zone (SFZ) has been investigated. The SFZ consists of two dextral strike-slip faults, the Zafarabad and Kafari faults. Geomorphic indices including mountain front sinuosity, valley asymmetry factor, hypsometric integral, valley floor width to valley height ratio and stream length gradient index were used to assess the effects of active reverse faults which control the topographic relief and Quaternary activity. Geomorphometric and field evidence reveal that the Quaternary activity and topographic relief of the study area are controlled by two reverse faults, the North and South Sabzpushan reverse faults, which have formed a pop-up structure in the contractional step-over area between the Zafarabad and Kafari dextral strikeslip faults as a consequence of oblique convergence between the Afro-Arabian and Iranian plates accommodated by the North and South Sabzpushan thrust faults. Motivated by the desire to have more information following the occurrence of damaging events, the main purpose of this article is to study aftershock sequence parameters in the Iranian plateau. To this end, the catalogue of the Iranian earthquakes between 2002 to the end of 2013 has been collected and homogenized among which 15 earthquakes have been selected to study their aftershock decay rates. For different tectonic provinces, the completeness magnitudes ( M) of the earthquake catalogue have been calculated in different time intervals. Also, the M variability in spatial and temporal windows has been determined for each selected event. For major Iranian earthquakes, catalogue of aftershocks has been collected thanks to three declustering methods: first, the classical windowing method of Gardner and Knopoff (Bull Seismol Soc Am 64:1363-1367, ); second, a modified version of this using spatial windowing based on the Wells and Coppersmith (Bull Seismol Soc Am 84:974-1002, ) relations; and third, the Burkhard and Grünthal (Swiss J Geosci 102:149-188, ) scheme. Effects of the temporal windows also have been investigated using the time periods of 1 month, 100 days, and 1 year in the declustering method of Gardner and Knopoff (Bull Seismol Soc Am 64:1363-1367, ). In the next step, the modified Omori law coefficients have been calculated for the 15 selected earthquakes. The calibrated regional generic model describing the temporal and magnitude distribution of aftershocks is of interest for time-dependent seismic hazard forecasts. The regional characteristics of the aftershock decay rates have been studied for the selected Iranian earthquakes in the Alborz, Zagros and Central Iran regions considering their different seismotectonics regimes. Chromitite bodies of various sizes associated with dunite envelopes have been found in the Dehsheikh ultramafic massif, in the southeastern part of the outer Zagros ophiolite belt. The chromitites occur as layered and lenticular bodies, and show both magmatic and deformational textures, including massive, disseminated, banded and nodular types. The Dehsheikh chromitites display a variation in Cr# [100 × Cr / (Cr + Al)] from 69 to 78, which is typical of high-Cr chromitites. The Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 contents of chromites range from 10.3 wt.% to 16.9 wt.% and 0.12 wt.% to 0.35 wt.%, respectively. The Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , and FeO/MgO values calculated for parental melts of Dehsheikh chromitites are within the range of boninitic melts. Chondrite-normalized distribution patterns of platinum-group elements show relative enrichments in Ru, Ir, and Os, and depletions in Rh, Pd, and Pt that are typical of chromitites associated with ophiolites formed by high degrees of mantle partial melting. The presence of Na-rich amphibole inclusions in chromite grains, together with the mineralogical and chemical composition of the chromitites and estimates of their parental melt compositions are used to help establish the tectono-magmatic setting. It is shown that the Dehsheikh massif is an ophiolite formed in a suprasubduction zone setting. We suggest that the composition of the rocks in this section was influenced by hydrous partial melts which might be formed in the subduction zone. Variable melt/rock interaction produced melt channel networks in the dunite which allowed the parental melt of the chromitite to percolate through them. Similar characteristics have been observed in other ophiolite complexes from the outer Zagros Iranian ophiolitic belt; these are believed to be the product of magmatism in a fore-arc environment. In this work we present new AMS and structural results from the Ferdows active fold–thrust system (Lut block, Central Iran). AMS analyses show that the Miocene units of the Upper Red Formation have a well defined magnetic fabric of tectonic origin, with both magnetic lineation and magnetic foliation oriented parallel to the regional fold axes. In most of the cases the magnetic fabric, acquired when the bedding was still horizontal, is related to different degrees of LPS shortening. In some other cases, the magnetic foliation is vertical and oblique to the bedding, suggesting that in the Ferdows thrust–fold structure a cleavage system, not visible at the outcrop scale, has been developed as a consequence of later shortening related to the activity of the thrust system, responsible of the recent earthquakes in the area. Results from this study establish a relationships between the recent tectonics of the area and the evolution of the magnetic fabric and demonstrate that a well defined magnetic fabric of pure tectonic origin can also develop in poorly deformed rocks lacking field evidence of pervasive internal deformation. The structure, age and petrogenesis of plutonic basement rocks from the Kuh-e-Sarhangi region, located in the Kashmar-Kerman tectonic zone of Central Iran are described. These intrusive rocks consist of a sub-alkaline, dominantly high-K calc-alkaline acidic suite, characterised by high SiO 2 (72.60–77.17 wt%), and alkalis (up to 8 wt%) and low Mg# (07-35). They are also enriched in Th, U and light rare earth elements, and depleted in Nb, Ta, and Ti, thus showing a geochemical fingerprint compatible with arc magmatism. The U–Pb zircon geochronology constrains magma crystallisation and emplacement during Ediacaran-Cambrian (ca. 575–535 Ma) times, under a tectonic regime dominated by transpressional tectonics as constrained by analysis of field structures. Combined inverse and forward modelling thermobarometry indicates pluton emplacement occurred in a thickened crustal environment, suggesting the Kuh-e-Sarhangi magmatic belt exposes the exhumed roots of a volcanic arc. This magmatism is interpreted as part of the Cadomian, subduction-related magmatism and framed within an oblique convergence scenario during formation of an Andean-type active margin all along the northern (proto-Tethyan) margin of the Gondwana Supercontinent. The neotectonics of the Zanjan-Kazvin area are dominated by the region-wide E-W trending left lateral strike-slip faults. These faults create restraining and releasing stepovers indicating strain partitioning. Instead of the NW-SE trending long range-parallel continuous thrust faulting suggested in previous studies, this paper demonstrates that there are E-W trending range-crossing left lateral strike-slip faults creating short range-parallel thrust faults in the restraining stepovers. Establishing this strike-slip-induced structural style might contribute to an understanding of the nature of the Elburz (Alborz) Mountains located between the Central Iran and Caspian blocks. Abstract: The Kashmar–Kerman Tectonic Zone (KKTZ) is an arcuate zone located between the Tabas and Yazd blocks in Central Iran. Detailed structural analysis and mapping of the metamorphic basement rocks of the KKTZ on the Boneh-Shurow, Tashk, Saghand and Sarkuh Metamorphic Complexes, as well as 40Ar/39Ar cooling ages on the Boneh-Shurow Metamorphic Complex indicate three deformation stages in the tectonometamorphic evolution of the KKTZ during the Cimmerian orogeny. The D1–1 event corresponds to continental accretion through the progressive formation of dextral shear zones, which is equivalent to an Early Cimmerian event during Late Triassic–Early Jurassic times. The D1–2 event is characterized by top-to-NE normal shear zones due to syn-collisional exhumation within the KKTZ and is considered to be a Mid-Cimmerian Middle Jurassic event at ca. 168Ma. The progressive regional compressional deformation is continued by the D2–1 and D2–2 events through formation of reverse shear zones and faults, with their SW movement. The progressive D2 event is considered to be Late Cimmerian and has taken place during Early Cretaceous. It is proposed that the mapped long-lived dextral shear zones within the KKTZ acted as block bounding faults between the Tabas and Yazd blocks in Central Iran. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Binalud Mountains are situated in the south of the Kopeh Dagh as a transitional zone between the Alborz and Central Iran zones. The Palaeotethys suture of the north Iran is located in this area. The Binalud Mountains consists of relatively thick successions of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. The earliest deformation, a polyphase synmetamorphic deformation which occurred entirely in ductile conditions, is distinguished in the metamorphic rocks of the eastern part. D1, D2 and D3 deformation phases are related to this deformation. The D4 deformation affected the area after a period of sedimentation and erosion. The thrust faults of the central and southern part of the eastern Binalud were classified as structures related to the D5 tectonic event. From the geodynamic point of view, in Late Palaeozoic times the studied area formed an oceanic trench generated by the subduction of the Palaeotethys oceanic lithosphere beneath the Turan Plate. In the Late Triassic, the Early Cimmerian Event resulted in a collisional type orogeny generating a transpression polyphase deformation and the metamorphism of Permian and older sediments. Following this collision, granite intrusions were emplaced in the area and caused contact metamorphism. The exhumation and erosion of the rocks deformed and metamorphosed during Early Cimmerian Event caused the formation of molassic type sediments in a Rhaetian–Lias back arc basin. The continuation of convergence between the Turan and Iran Plates caused the metamorphism of these sediments and their transformation to phyllite and meta-sandstone. During Late Mesozoic and Early Cenozoic times, the convergence between Central Iran and Turan Plates continued and a NE compression caused folding of the Cretaceous and older rocks in the Kopeh Dagh area. In the Binalud area this deformation caused the generation of several thrust fault systems with S to SW vergence, resulting in a thrusting of Palaeozoic and Mesozoic successions on each other and on the Neogene sediments at the southern border of the Binalud Mountains. Abstract: To advance our understanding of the Mesozoic to Eocene tectonics and kinematics of basement units exposed in the south-western Central Iran plateau, this paper presents new structural and thermochronological data from the Chapedony metamorphic core complex and hangingwall units, particularly from the Posht-e-Badam complex. The overall Paleogene structural characteristics of the area are related to an oblique convergent zone. The Saghand area represents part of a deformation zone between the Arabian and Eurasian plates, and can be interpreted to result from the Central Iran intracontinental deformation acting as a weak zone during Mesozoic to Paleogene times. Field and microstructural evidence reveal that the metamorphic and igneous rocks suffered a ductile shear deformation including mylonitization at the hangingwall boundary of the Eocene Chapedony metamorphic core complex. Comparison of deformation features in the mylonites and other structural features within the footwall unit leads to the conclusion that the mylonites were formed in a subhorizontal shear zone by NE–SW stretching during Middle to Late Eocene extensional tectonics. The Chapedony metamorphic core complex is characterized by amphibolite-facies metamorphism and development of S and S-L tectonic fabrics. The Posht-e-Badam complex was deformed by two stages during Cimmerian tectonic processes forming the Paleo-Tethyan suture. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Alborz is a region of active deformation within the Arabia–Eurasia collision zone. The Abr and the Khij Faults are two NE-trending left-lateral strike-slip faults in the eastern Alborz that correspond to the Shahrud fault system extended through an area of about 95km×55km. Tectonic landforms typically associated with active strike-slip faults, such as deflected stream channels, offset ridges and fault scarps are documented along the mentioned faults. Detailed analyses of satellite images and digital topographic data accompanied by field surveys allowed us to measure horizontal offsets of about 420±50m and 400±50m for the Abr and Khij Faults, respectively. A total of 8 quartz-rich samples were sampled and dated from two different fan surfaces using in situ-produced 10Be cosmogenic dating method. Minimum exposure ages for the abandonment of the alluvial fan surfaces of 115±14kyr along the Abr Fault and of 230±16kyr along the Khij Fault imply that both faults are active with slip rates of about 3–4mmyr−1 and 1–3mmyr−1, respectively. The results of our study provide the first direct quantitative geological estimates of slip rate along these two active faults and place a new constraint on slip distribution between the faults in the eastern Alborz. Fault kinematic studies (from fault slip data) indicate a N35°E-trending maximum stress axis comprising a dominant strike-slip regime in agreement with the geomorphological analyses. The left-lateral strike-slip faulting along the Abr and Khij Faults and their associated fault zones in the eastern Alborz can be due to the westward component of motion of the South Caspian Basin with respect to Eurasia and Central Iran. Abstract: We provide descriptions of strike-slip and reverse faulting, active within the late Quaternary, in the vicinity of Kerman city in southeastern Iran. The faults accommodate north-south, right-lateral, shear between central Iran and the Dasht-e-Lut depression. The regions that we describe have been subject to numerous earthquakes in the historical and instrumental periods, and many of the faults that are documented in this paper constitute hazards for local populations, including the city of Kerman itself (population ∼200,000). Faults to the north and east of Kerman are associated with the transfer of slip from the Gowk to the Kuh Banan right-lateral faults across a 40 km-wide restraining bend. Faults south and west of the city are associated with oblique slip on the Mahan and Jorjafk systems. The patterns of faulting observed along the Mahan-Jorjafk system, the Gowk-Kuh Banan system, and also the Rafsanjan-Rayen system further to the south, appear to preserve different stages in the development of these oblique-slip fault systems. We suggest that the faulting evolves through time. Topography is initially generated on oblique slip faults (as is seen on the Jorjafk fault). The shortening component then migrates to reverse faults situated away from the high topography whereas strike-slip continues to be accommodated in the high, mountainous, regions (as is seen, for example, on the Rafsanjan fault). The reverse faults may then link together and eventually evolve into new, through-going, strike-slip faults in a process that appears to be occurring, at present, in the bend between the Gowk and Kuh Banan faults. Abstract: The Zagros fold-and-thrust belt of SW-Iran is among the youngest continental collision zones on Earth. Collision is thought to have occurred in the late Oligocene–early Miocene, followed by continental shortening. The High Zagros Belt (HZB) presents a Neogene imbricate structure that has affected the thick sedimentary cover of the former Arabian continental passive margin. The HZB of interior Fars marks the innermost part of SE-Zagros, trending NW–SE, that is characterised by higher elevation, lack of seismicity, and no evident active crustal shortening with respect to the outer (SW) parts. This study examines the brittle structures that developed during the mountain building process to decipher the history of polyphase deformation and variations in compressive tectonic fields since the onset of collision. Analytic inversion techniques enabled us to determine and separate different brittle tectonic regimes in terms of stress tensors. Various strike–slip, compressional, and tensional stress regimes are thus identified with different stress fields. Brittle tectonic analyses were carried out to reconstruct possible geometrical relationships between different structures and to establish relative chronologies of corresponding stress fields, considering the folding process. Results indicate that in the studied area, the main fold and thrust structure developed in a general compressional stress regime with an average N032° direction of σ 1 stress axis during the Miocene. Strike–slip structures were generated under three successive strike–slip stress regimes with different σ 1 directions in the early Miocene (N053°), late Miocene–early Pliocene (N026°), and post-Pliocene (N002°), evolving from pre-fold to post-fold faulting. Tensional structures also developed as a function of the evolving stress regimes. Our reconstruction of stress fields suggests an anticlockwise reorientation of the horizontal σ 1 axis since the onset of collision and a significant change in vertical stress from σ 3 to σ 2 since the late stage of folding and thrusting. A late right-lateral reactivation was also observed on some pre-existing belt-parallel brittle structures, especially along the reverse fault systems, consistent with the recent N–S plate convergence. However, this feature was not reflected by large structures in the HZB of interior Fars. The results should not be extrapolated to the entire Zagros belt, where the deformation front has propagated from inner to outer zones during the younger events. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Iran is one of the most active regions in the world with respect to earthquakes and tectonic motions in the lithosphere. In order to study the impact of the geoid model in detecting plate tectonic boundaries and in the establishment of an accurate height datum for future geodynamic observations, a new combined gravimetric geoid model for Iran (IRG04C) was computed by the method of least squares modification of Stokes formula based on the most recent gravity anomaly database, SRTM high resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM), GRACE GGM02 Global Geopotential Model and GPS/levelling data. The RMS fit of the new geoid model versus GPS/levelling data is 9cm, which is a 10 times better fit compared to the most recent published gravimetric geoid model in the area. An integrated approach, combining gravity, geoid and seismology data as well as a digital elevation model, was used to find possible correlations between these parameters. Our investigation indicates that all earthquakes with magnitude over 6.0 in the Richter scale are located in areas with a geoid slope exceeding 7.5%. Microearthquakes in Central Zagros, recorded for 7 weeks in 1997, lie in a ∼6–8 km zone that is likely located beneath 11 km of sediments. They are not located on an active décollement between the sediments and the crystalline crust, but rather define a pattern of NNW–SSE trending lineaments parallel to the fold axes observed at the surface. The spacing between the seismic lineaments is ∼15–20 km and therefore different from that between the folds (∼10–15 km), which suggests that there is not a simple relationship between the two. Focal mechanisms and precise relative locations are consistent with NW–SE striking reverse faulting connected by NNW–SSE striking right lateral strike-slip faults. The dip of the reverse faults is not certain but is likely NE for the northernmost faults. The strain pattern deduced from the P-axes is remarkably similar to the shortening deduced from GPS-based geodesy suggesting that microearthquakes are the response of the prefractured brittle crust to strain rather than localized on single active faults.
