High-performance radiation detection materials are an integral part of national security, medical imaging, and nuclear physics applications. Those that offer compositional and manufacturing versatility are of particular interest. Here, we report a new family of radiological particle-discriminating scintillators containing bis(9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)diphe-nylsilane (compound “P2”) and in situ polymerized vinyltoluene (PVT) that is phase stable and mechanically robust at any blend ratio. The gamma-ray light yield increases nearly linearly across the composition range, to ~16 400 photons/MeV at 75 wt.% P2. These materials are also capable of performing $\gamma $ /n pulse shape discrimination (PSD), and between 20% and 50% P2 loading is competitive with the PSD quality of commercially available plastic scintillators. The 137Cs scintillation rise and decay times are sensitive to P2 loading and approach the values for “pure” P2. Additionally, the radiation detection performance of P2-PVT blends can be made stable in 60 °C air for at least 1.5 months with the application of a thin film of poly(vinylalcohol) to the scintillator surfaces. In this work we report a new class of organic-based scintillators that combines several of the desirable attributes of existing crystalline, liquid, and plastic organic scintillators. The prepared materials may be isolated in single crystalline form or melt-cast to produce highly transparent glasses that have been shown to provide high light yields of up to 16,000 photons/MeVee, as evaluated against EJ-200 plastic scintillators and solution-grown trans -stilbene crystals. The prepared organic glasses exhibit neutron/gamma pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) and are compatible with wavelength shifters to reduce optical self-absorption effects that are intrinsic to pure materials such as crystalline organics. The combination of high scintillation efficiency, PSD capabilities, and facile scale-up via melt-casting distinguishes this new class of amorphous materials from existing alternatives. In this work, we report the synthesis and inclusion of rationally designed organotin compounds in polystyrene matrices as a route towards plastic scintillators capable of gamma-ray spectroscopy. Tin loading ratios of up to 15% w/w have been incorporated, resulting in photopeak energy resolution values as low as 10.9% for 662 keV gamma-rays. Scintillator constituents were selected based upon a previously reported distance-dependent quenching mechanism. Data obtained using UV-Vis and photoluminescence measurements are consistent with this phenomenon and are correlated with the steric and electronic properties of the respective organotin complexes. We also report fast scintillation decay behavior that is comparable to the quenched scintillators 0.5% trans-stilbene doped bibenzyl and the commercial plastic scintillator BC-422Q-1%. These observations are discussed in the context of practical considerations such as optical transparency, ease-of-preparation/scale-up, and total scintillator cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we describe a method to control the relative proportion of prompt and delayed luminosity of organic-based scintillators via direct and exponential emission from an extrinsic triplet state. This approach involves the incorporation of triplet-harvesting heavy metal complexes in plastic scintillator matrices to convert intrinsically non-luminescent host states to highly emissive guest states. Measurements on these plastic scintillators indicate improved light yields over the undoped polymers and the ability to perform neutron/gamma particle-discrimination. A similar extent of molecular-level control is not possible in traditional organic materials due to complex decay kinetics and the absence of spectral information for the delayed triplet-derived emission. The materials described here address these limitations through efficient host-guest triplet harvesting, which enables particle discrimination according to conventional pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) and a previously unreported spectral-shape discrimination (SSD) scheme. Light scattering particles can appear in environmentally-exposed pieces of plastic scintillator materials, leading to decreased scintillation light output. In this work, 1" cubes of commercially-available plastic scintillators were aged hydrothermally at temperatures between 25–55 °C, and 0%–100% relative humidity (R.H.), and the mass uptake and degree of light scattering were measured after cooling below the aging temperature. A correlation was found between moisture mass uptake and degree of light scattering, and the fogging phenomenon was found to be reversible upon moisture desorption. Additionally, variable temperature light scattering studies revealed a correlation between the temperature of fog onset and moisture mass uptake in hydrothermally-aged 1" scintillator cubes. The fog onset data was further used in a local weather-based model to predict the appearance of light scattering in deployed radiation portal monitor panels, and the model was validated with several specimens collected from retired portal panels. Together, the results quantitatively characterize the observed environmental aging of plastic scintillator radiation portal panels, give insight to deployed panel lifetime as a function of environment, and pave the way for future developments in environmentally-stable radiation portal monitors. Studies have revealed that plastic scintillators such as polyvinyl toluene and polystyrene can undergo environmentally related material damage ("fogging") that adversely affects detection performance under certain conditions and histories. A significant decrease in sensitivity has been seen in some gamma-ray detectors as they age as a result of this damage. Performance degradation due to such damage is characterized by a signal change from the detector, which shifts to lower energy, and ultimately a reduction in the ability to detect gamma radiation. This degradation is due to the permeation of water into the plastic, which can then cause temporary fogging and permanent damage to the material. As an example, a 1-mm thick barrier of high-density polyethylene with an area of 1 m2 would allow 5 g per year of water transmission at 100% relative humidity. Thus, significant amounts of water can penetrate plastics over time and provide the potential for damage to the plastic. Such damage to plastic scintillator can cause problems for radiation detection applications in uncontrolled environments. Mitigation approaches that have been proposed to prevent damage to plastic scintillator include encapsulation of the plastic scintillator to prevent water intrusion that leads to damage during cold cycles. It is concluded that an encapsulation material with a moisture vapor transmission rate on the order of 10−4 g ⋅ m−2 ⋅ d − 1 or better is needed for protecting large pieces of plastic scintillator from fogging over years of use. This paper presents information on testing of bare and encapsulated plastic scintillator samples and on diagnostic approaches to measure the nature and progression of the fogging condition. It is shown that several encapsulation approaches fail to prevent water intrusion, while a couple methods can successfully encapsulate plastic and prevent water from penetrating the plastic and producing fogging. • Plastic scintillators undergo environmentally induced damage (fogging) from water permeation. • Damage causes a significant decrease in light collection from the scintillator. • Damage mitigation approaches include heaters, encapsulation, and new plastic formulations. • Encapsulation has been demonstrated to prevent fogging damage under accelerated aging tests.
