The ALLIANCE code is developed to solve a new set of four-dimensional electromagnetic drift-kinetic equations in slab geometry [J. Plasma Phys. 88 905880117 (2022)]. The nonlinear equations are useful for the study of magnetized plasma systems at scales comparable to, or larger than the ion gyroradius. In particular, it is suited for the study the kinetic turbulent cascade in astrophysical plasma, while preserving finite Larmor radius effects at the fluid-kinetic transition. The equations solved are in spectral Fourier-Laguerre-Hermite form, a pseudo-spectral approach is used for the nonlinear terms, and the code is parallelised over multiple directions. After a presentation of the code, validation runs are shown, and benchmarks for serial and parallel computations are presented.

We present the TRIDK code, which is written in Python, that solves Triad Reduced Interactions for a Drift Kinetic system of equations. The four-dimensional drift kinetic system of equations captures nonlinear electromagnetic (or electrostatic) interactions for a magnetized plasma at scales larger than the ion gyroradius. In the TRIDK code, the nonlinear interaction are modelled using a compound of nested icosahedra-dodecohedra shells in wave space, which allows to perform computationally efficient simulations over a large span of scales. This reduced approach captures essential nonlinear dynamics, while allowing parallel mixing in velocity space to take place. The intent is to offer a cost efficient way to probe the balance between linear and nonlinear dynamics, and analyse the interplay between linear Landau damping and turbulence.

We employ magnetized plasma turbulence, described by a gyrokinetic formalism in an interval ranging from the end of the fluid scales to the electron gyroradius, to introduce the first study of kinetic intermittency, in which nonlinear structures formed directly in the distribution functions are analyzed by accounting for velocity space correlations generated by linear (Landau resonance) and nonlinear phase mixing. Electron structures are found to be strongly intermittent and dominated by linear phase mixing, while nonlinear phase mixing dominates the weakly intermittent ions. This is the first time spatial intermittency and linear phase mixing are shown to be self-consistently linked for the electrons and, as the magnetic field follows the intermittency of the electrons at small scales, explain why magnetic islands are places dominated by Landau damping in steady state turbulence.

Using large resolution numerical simulations of GK turbulence, spanning an interval ranging from the end of the fluid scales to the electron gyroradius, we study the energy transfers in the perpendicular direction for a proton-electron plasma in a slab magnetic geometry. In addition, to aid our understanding of the nonlinear cascade, we use an idealized test representation for the energy transfers between two scales, mimicking the dynamics of turbulence in an infinite inertial range. For GK turbulence, a detailed analysis of nonlinear energy transfers that account for the separation of energy exchanging scales is performed. We show that locality functions associated with the energy cascade across dyadic (i.e. multiple of two) separated scales achieve an asymptotic state, recovering clear values for the locality exponents. We relate these exponents to the energy exchange between two scales, diagnostics that are less computationally intensive than the locality functions. It is the first time asymptotic locality is shown to exist for GK turbulence and the contributions made by highly non-local interactions, previously reported in the literature, are explained as very local transfers of energy that occur between wavenumbers within the same dyadic signal. The results presented here and their implications are discussed from the perspective of previous findings reported in the literature and the idea of universality of GK turbulence.

The nature of the nonlinear interactions in gyrokinetic (GK) turbulence, driven by an ion-temperature gradient instability, is investigated using numerical simulations of single ion species plasma in three-dimensional flux tube geometry. To account for the level of separation existing between scales involved in an energetic interaction, the degree of locality of the free energy scale flux is analyzed employing Kraichnan's infrared (IR) and ultraviolet locality functions. Due to the nontrivial dissipative nature of GK turbulence, an asymptotic level for the locality exponents, indicative of a universal dynamical regime for GK's, is not recovered and an accentuated non-local behavior of the IR interactions is found instead, in spite of the local energy cascade observed., 4 pages, 3 figures
