This study proposes an affordable plasma device that utilizes a parallel-plate dielectric barrier discharge geometry with a metallic mesh electrode, featuring a straightforward 3D-printed design. Powered by a high-voltage supply adapted from a cosmetic plasma device, it operates on atmospheric air, eliminating the need for gas flux. Surface modification of polyethylene treated with this device was characterized and showed that the elemental composition after 15 min of plasma treatment decreased the amount of C to ~80 at% due to the insertion of O (~15 at%). Tested against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus , the device achieved a reduction of over 99% in microbial load with exposure times ranging from 1 to 10 min. Simultaneously, the Vero cell viability remained consistently high, namely between 91% and 96% across exposure times. These results highlight this device's potential for the surface modification of materials and various infection-related applications, boasting affordability and facilitating effective antimicrobial interventions.

Objectives: To prevent oral candidiasis, it is crucial to inactivate Candida-based biofilms on dentures. Common denture cleansing solutions cannot sufficiently inactivate Candida albicans. Therefore, we investigated the anticandidal efficacy of a physical plasma against C. albicans biofilms in vitro., Materials and Methods: Argon or argon plasma with 1 % oxygen admixture was applied on C. albicans biofilms grown for 2, 7, or 16 days on polymethylmethacrylate discs; 0.1 % chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) and 0.6 % sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solutions served as positive treatment controls. In addition, these two solutions were applied in combination with plasma for 30 min to assess potential synergistic effects. The anticandidal efficacy was determined by the number of colony forming units (CFU) in log(10) and expressed as reduction factor (RF, the difference between control and treated specimen)., Results: On 2-day-biofilms, plasma treatment alone or combined with 30 min CHX treatment led to significant differences of means of CFU (RF = 4.2 and RF = 4.3), clearly superior to CHX treatment alone (RF = 0.6). Plasma treatment of 7-day-or 16-day-old biofilms revealed no significant CFU reduction. The treatment of 7-day-old (RF = 1.7) and 16-day-old (RF = 1.3) biofilms was slightly more effective with NaOCl alone than with the combined treatment of NaOCl and plasma (RF = 1.6/RF = 1.9). The combination of CHX and plasma increased the RF immaterially., Conclusion: The use of plasma alone and in combination with antiseptics is promising anticandidal regimens for daily use on dentures when biofilms are not older than 2 days., Clinical Relevance: Plasma could help to reduce denture-associated candidiasis.

The plasma jet transfer technique relies on a conductive wire at floating potential, which, upon entering in contact with a primary discharge, is capable of igniting a small plasma plume at the distal end of a long flexible plastic tube. In this work, two different long tube configurations were employed for the surface modification of polypropylene (PP) samples using argon as the working gas. One of the jet configurations has a thin copper (Cu) wire, which was installed inside the long tube. In the other configuration, the floating electrode is a metallic mesh placed between two plastic tubes in a coaxial arrangement. In the first case, the tip of the Cu wire is in direct contact with the working gas at the plasma outlet, whereas, in the second, the inner plastic tube provides an additional dielectric barrier that prevents the conductor from being in contact with the gas. Water contact angle (WCA) measurements on treated PP samples revealed that different surface modification radial profiles are formed when the distance (d) between the plasma outlet and target is changed. Moreover, it was found that the highest WCA reduction does not always occur at the point where the plasma impinges the surface of the material, especially when the d value is small. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, it was confirmed that the WCA values are directly linked to the oxygen-functional groups formed on the PP surfaces after the plasma treatment. An analysis of the WCA measurements along the surface, as well as their temporal evolution, together with the XPS data, suggest that, when the treatment is performed at small d values, the plasma jet removes some functional groups at the point where the plasma hits the surface, thus leading to peculiar WCA profiles. The initial adhesion and spreading of cells are crucial factors for the successful performance of a synthetic biomaterial used for cell culture disposables or human medical devices (e.g., implants). Surface properties which allow the control of the attachment of cells are decisive for the acceptance of the provided material. Hence, different surface preparation techniques are used to equip surfaces with functional groups to improve initial surface interactions. In this paper, polystyrene (PS) surfaces were modified by using different nonthermal plasma processes. In particular, low-pressure plasma and atmospheric-pressure plasma were applied to modify surfaces or to deposit thin films on surfaces. Furthermore, the behaviors of human osteoblastic cells with respect to cell viability and cell growth on differently plasma treated PS surfaces are investigated. A comparison is made between plasma-grafted PS and commercially available PS—such as tissue-culture PS and Primaria. The cell studies were accompanied by surface analysis comprising atomic force microscopy, determination of surface energies, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. This work demonstrates that the functionalization of PS substrates by applying low-pressure and atmospheric-pressure plasma processes are equally effective in the improvement of cell attachment and proliferation. Furthermore, it is shown that the enhanced metabolic activity and spreading behavior of osteoblastic cells correlate well with an increase in surface wettability and the introduction of polar oxygen- and/or nitrogen-containing functional groups after plasma treatment. The chemical structure of cobalt--polypyrrole -- produced by a dual plasma process -- is analyzed by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDX) and extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS). It is shown that only nanoparticles of a size of 3 nm with the low temperature crystal structure of cobalt are present within the compound. Besides that, cobalt--nitrogen and carbon--oxygen structures are observed. Furthermore, more and more cobalt--nitrogen structures are produced when increasing the magnetron power. Linking the information on the chemical structure to the results about the catalytic activity of the films -- which are presented in part I of this contribution -- it is concluded that the cobalt--nitrogen structures are the probable catalytically active sites. The cobalt--nitrogen bond length is calculated as 2.09 Å and the carbon--nitrogen bond length as 1.38 Å. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this paper a new process for the preparation of thin silicon dioxide (SiO2) film is presented: the oxidation of c-Si (111) surface in atmospheric pressure plasma at room temperature. Diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge (DCSBD) at atmospheric pressure in air and oxygen atmosphere has been used. The oxidation rate and the thickness of oxidized layers were estimated by ellipsometry. The structure and the chemical composition of oxidized layers were investigated by infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the morphology of the layer surface. It was found that stoichiometric SiO2 layers were obtained with oxidation rates comparable to thermal oxidation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
