Slender nightshade (Solanum nigrescens Mart. and Gal.) is a perennial, herbaceous plant from the Solanaceae family, which is distributed in various environments. The aim of this study was to review the scientific literature and to establish slender nightshade plants under greenhouse conditions in order to record their phenological development. The specialized literature regarding the distribution, botanical characteristics, and uses of such species was analyzed. The phenological development was recorded based on the BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt, Chemische Industrie) guide. Slender nightshade seeds were germinated under greenhouse conditions, then transferred to red porous volcano gravel locally known as tezontle in black polyethylene bags and watered with a Steiner nutrient solution. Changes in phenology were monitored and recorded from germination to the ripening of fruit and seeds. Slender nightshade has a wide distribution in Mexico and is used for medicinal and gastronomical purposes, as well as to control pathogens. The phenological development of slender nightshade has seven stages from germination to the ripening of fruit and seeds. Slender nightshade is a poorly studied plant with potential for human consumption. The phenological recording provides a tool for its management and further research as a crop.

The market success of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars depends on sufficient seed production, as they are propagated by seed. However, breeding for high quality forage production reduces seed yield, and breaking the negative correlation would help to overcome the problem. The foliar disease crown rust is another factor affecting reproductive capacity and thereby seed yield. We evaluated seed yield-related traits and resistance to crown rust in a collection of commercial cultivars and ecotypes of perennial ryegrass and identified genome-wide markers associated with the traits. The study revealed high variation between the ecotype and cultivar groups as well as between years. A genome-wide association study identified 17 DNA single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of which eight were associated with crown rust and nine with flag-leaf length. The SNP markers were located within or near predicted genes functioning in defense against pathogens. The identified genes are strong candidates for a further in-depth functional study to continue unravel determination of leaf architecture and crown rust resistance in perennial ryegrass.

Perennial life cycles enable plants to have remarkably long lifespans, as exemplified by trees that can live for thousands of years. For this, they require sophisticated regulatory networks that sense environmental changes and initiate adaptive responses in their growth patterns. Recent research has gradually elucidated fundamental mechanisms underlying the perennial life cycle. Intriguingly, several conserved components of the floral transition pathway in annuals such as Arabidopsis thaliana also participate in these regulatory mechanisms underpinning perenniality. Here, we provide an overview of perennials' physiological features and summarise their recently discovered molecular foundations. We also highlight the importance of deepening our understanding of perenniality in the development of perennial grain crops, which are promising elements of future sustainable agriculture.

Salinity stress is one of the most important global problems that afflicts and limits the growth and development of turfgrass in arid and semi-arid areas. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of the interaction between gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and salinity (NaCl) on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Perennial ryegrass plants were treated with three concentrations of GABA (0, 50, and 100 mM) and NaCl (0, 50, and 100 mM) for two months. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed that GABA, salinity, and their interaction had significant effects on the majority of measured traits. In shoots and roots, the application of salinity increased the Na+/K+ ratio, as well as proline, total soluble carbohydrates and protein (TSP), malondialdehyde (MDA), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content, but reduced relative water content, membrane stability index (MSI), total chlorophyll content, and shoot and root growth. When GABA was applied in saline conditions, Na+ did not accumulate, the Na+/K+ ratio decreased, and the amount of K+ content increased significantly in shoots and roots, thereby allowing plant growth to resume. Peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities increased significantly (51.83% and 322%, respectively), whereas H2O2 and MDA contents decreased significantly (34.4% and 67%, respectively). In addition, the construction of a biplot, heatmap, and correlation plot fortified the positive effects of GABA on perennial ryegrass growth in saline conditions. GABA may help to alleviate salinity damage through its involvement in osmotic adjustment (proline and TSP), reducing the Na+/K+ ratio and limiting oxidative damage in cells with a dramatic increase in POD and SOD activity. Therefore, the application of GABA is an alternative technique for improving turfgrass tolerance to salinity.

To reduce the severity of shoot blight and prevent the resulting development of cankers on perennial apple wood, we evaluated eight fire blight postinfection spray programs of prohexadione-calcium (PCA) alone or with acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) over 2 years. On mature trees of cultivar Royal Court, a single application of the high PCA rate (247 mg/liter) at 2 to 3 days after inoculation resulted in 89.5 and 69.5% reduction of shoot blight severity after inoculation. Two applications of PCA 247 mg/liter 12 or 14 days apart, with the first one applied 2 to 3 days after inoculation, resulted in 78.8 and 74.5% reduction of shoot blight severity in both years. A 100% control of canker incidence on perennial wood from infected shoots in both years was achieved with a single application of PCA (247 mg/liter) applied at 2 or 3 days after the inoculation, and three applications of PCA (125 mg/liter) + ASM (25 mg/liter) 12 to 16 days apart reduced canker incidence by 83.5 and 69% in the 2 years. The other programs with lower PCA rates and frequencies of application reduced shoot blight severity 50.8 and 51.8% (PCA) and 62.6 to 72% and 59.3% (PCA + ASM) over 2 years, respectively. Reduction of canker incidence on wood by the other programs was 66.5% and 69 to 90.4% in the two years, respectively. As fire blight cankers lead to death of dwarf apple trees and serve as primary sources of inoculum, our effective PCA and PCA + ASM programs could serve as viable postinfection management options. These treatments can reduce or prevent canker development and thus significantly abate tree losses in high-density apple orchards after fire blight epidemics occur. Accepted version

Salsola drummondii is a perennial habitat-indifferent halophyte growing in saline and non-saline habitats of the Arabian hyperarid deserts. It offers an invaluable opportunity to examine the molecular mechanisms of salt tolerance. The present study was conducted to elucidate these mechanisms through transcriptome profiling of seedlings grown from seeds collected in a saline habitat. The Illumina Hiseq 2500 platform was employed to sequence cDNA libraries prepared from shoots and roots of non-saline-treated plants (controls) and plants treated with 1200 mM NaCl. Transcriptomic comparison between salt-treated and control samples resulted in 17,363 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 12,000 upregulated genes (7870 in roots, 4130 in shoots) and 5363 downregulated genes (4258 in roots and 1105 in shoots), and 272,643 unigenes were functionally annotated. The majority of identified DEGs are known to be involved in transcription regulation (79), signal transduction (82), defense metabolism (101), transportation (410), cell wall metabolism (27), regulatory processes (392), respiration (85), chaperoning (9), and ubiquitination (98) during salt tolerance. This study identified potential genes associated with the salt tolerance of S. drummondii and demonstrated that this tolerance may depend on the induction of certain genes in shoot and root tissues. These gene expressions were validated using reverse-transcription quantitative PCR, the results of which were consistent with transcriptomics results. Pale swallowwort [Vincetoxicum rossicum (Kleopow) Barbar.; syn.: Cynanchum rossicum (Kleopow) Borhidi] and black swallowwort [Vincetoxicum nigrum (L.) Moench; syn.: Cynanchum louiseae Kartesz & Gandhi] are invasive perennial viny milkweeds that have become prevalent across natural and managed habitats in northeastern North America. Southern blight of V. rossicum caused by the fungus Athelia rolfsii (Curzi) C. C. Tu & Kimbr. was reported at a New York county park in 2008, resulting in a decline in V. rossicum stands. The disease outbreak and persistence of the pathogen highlighted the potential of A. rolfsii for Vincetoxicum spp. control. To better characterize A. rolfsii’s pathogenicity and biology, we studied virulence to adult Vincetoxicum spp., spatiotemporal attributes of the Southern blight epidemic at the discovery site over 4 yr, and sclerotial survival over 2 yr. Disease incidence and severity were high for both Vincetoxicum spp. in misting chamber experiments. The spatiotemporal spread patterns of Southern blight in V. rossicum suggest the epidemic in the first year of monitoring (2016) was already highly aggregated and that subsequent spread was limited and resulted in significant local aggregation. Sclerotial survival studies at two locations (Pittsford and Ithaca, NY) demonstrated the A. rolfsii isolates can overwinter in upstate New York and are pathogenic to Vincetoxicum spp. the subsequent season. However, shallow burial of sclerotia more rapidly reduced survival compared with placement on the soil surface. Overwinter survival of A. rolfsii sclerotia in New York is notable, as this pathogen is typically associated with subtropical and tropical regions. Broadcast applications of the pathogen would be needed for widespread Vincetoxicum control at a site, but even restricting releases to select locations would not prevent pathogen movement off-site via water or machinery. The known risks of the A. rolfsii isolate to other broadleaf plants in natural and agricultural settings suggest a low feasibility of use for the biological control of Vincetoxicum spp.

Reproductive success largely defines the fitness of plant species. Understanding how heat and drought affect plant reproduction is thus key to predicting future plant fitness under rising global temperatures. Recent work suggests reproductive tissues are highly vulnerable to water stress in perennial plants where reproductive sacrifice could preserve plant survival. However, most crop species are annuals where such a strategy would theoretically reduce fitness. We examined the reproductive strategy of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum var. Rheinlands Ruhm) to determine whether water supply to fruits is prioritized above vegetative tissues during drought. Using optical methods, we map xylem cavitation and tissue shrinkage in vegetative and reproductive organs during dehydration to determine the priority of water flow under acute water stress. Stems and peduncles of tomato showed significantly greater xylem cavitation resistance than leaves. This maintenance of intact water supply enabled tomato fruit to continue expanding during acute water stress, utilising xylem water made available by tissue collapse and early cavitation of leaves. Here, tomato plants prioritize water supply to reproductive tissues, maintaining fruit development under drought conditions. These results emphasize the critical role of water transport in shaping life history and suggest a broad relevance of hydraulic prioritization in plant ecology. Context Perennial forage grass species are often grown with limited water following establishment and rely on accessing water deep in the soil profile to survive. Aim This study aimed to characterise bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) genotypes with rapid vertical root growth associated with post-establishment survival. Methods Twelve bermudagrasses representing genotypes from diverse climate zones in Australia were established in rhizotrons to analyse the stability in genotypic variation in root and shoot growth in winter and summer experiments. Genotypic rank of root length, leaf area, and root dry weight were consistent in both seasons. Key results Bermudagrass genotypes exhibited different traits correlated with root vertical growth rate and inconsistency of genotypic rank of shoot growth. During winter establishment, the rate of root depth development (RRDD) (r = −0.64) was correlated with the proportion of root length that became inactive, that was likely due to seasonal root death in winter conditions; during summer establishment, RRDD was correlated with tiller appearance rate (r = 0.45) and root distribution to 10 cm depth (r = −0.62). Shoot dry weight was correlated with photosynthesis (r = 0.85) and transpiration (r = 0.79) in summer, but not in winter. RRDD (r = 0.75, winter and r = 0.77, summer) was correlated with drought resistance index, previously analysed under field conditions. Conclusions and implications Genotypes from the Mediterranean climates in Australia showed rapid growth of roots and shoots in both seasons and have the greatest potential for broader application for forage production in variable environments.

Little is known about phosphorus (P) uptake at deep soil layers, e.g. below 1 m of soil depth. We aimed at tracing P uptake up to 4.2 m of soil depth of different plant species in an arable field using 33P isotope combined with the core-labelling technique. Soil was packed into ingrowth-cores and labelled with H3 33PO4. The ingrowth cores were placed into field plots of intermediate wheatgrass, perennial lupine, rosinweed and curly dock at the depths of 0.2, 1.0, 2.5 and 4.2 m. 33P uptake into shoots was measured by liquid scintillation assay after 4, 6 and 8 weeks of labelling. Root-length and diameter classes were analyzed from the retracted ingrowth-cores. We observed 33P uptake from all the tested soil depths down to 4.2 m. Curly dock with higher root density exhibited greater 33P uptake. Roots below 1 m was responsible for nearly 50 % of the total 33P uptake from all four depth-levels. Also, roots below 1.0 m showed higher 33P concentration per unit root mass, in line with a higher proportion of fine roots at depth. Our data demonstrate that perennial crop species can access deep P beyond 4 m of soil depth, and that the share of total P uptake below topsoil layers can be substantial, possibly related to the shift towards finer roots in deep soil layers. The results also show that the capacity for deep P acquisition highly depends on crop species even under same field conditions. Therefore, future research should focus on identifying crops with efficient P acquisition capacity in deeper soil layers which can potentially improve crop P access, especially under P-limited conditions in the topsoil.

Winter dormancy (WD) is a crucial strategy for plants coping with potentially deadly environments. In recent decades, this process has been extensively studied in economically important perennial eudicots due to changing climate. However, in evergreen monocots with no chilling requirements, dormancy processes are so far a mystery. In this study, we compared the WD process in closely related evergreen (Iris japonica) and deciduous (I. tectorum) iris species across crucial developmental time points. Both iris species exhibit a ‘temporary’ WD process with distinct durations, and could easily resume growth under warm conditions. To decipher transcriptional changes, full-length sequencing for evergreen iris and short read RNA sequencing for deciduous iris were applied to generate respective reference transcriptomes. Combining results from a multipronged approach, SHORT VEGETATIVE PHASE and FRUITFULL (FUL) from MADS-box was associated with a dormancy- and a growth-related module, respectively. They were co-expressed with genes involved in phytohormone signaling, carbohydrate metabolism, and environmental adaptation. Also, gene expression patterns and physiological changes in the above pathways highlighted potential abscisic acid and jasmonic acid antagonism in coordinating growth and stress responses, whereas differences in carbohydrate metabolism and reactive oxygen species scavenging might lead to species-specific WD durations. Moreover, a detailed analysis of MIKCCMADS-box in irises revealed common features described in eudicots as well as possible new roles for monocots during temporary WD, such as FLOWERING LOCUS C and FUL. In essence, our results not only provide a portrait of temporary WD in perennial monocots but also offer new insights into the regulatory mechanism underlying WD in plants.

Purpose In cold climates, glyphosate residues may linger in soils, with effects on plant–microbe interactions and, consequently, plant performance. Here, we explore the influence of glyphosate residues on the endophytic microbiota (bacteria and fungi) and performance of the perennial nitrogen-fixing weed Lupinus polyphyllus. Methods In a common garden, we grew plants from six populations of L. polyphyllus in glyphosate-treated or untreated control soils, with or without additional phosphorus. We sampled plant microbiota (leaves, roots, nodules) and assessed plant performance based on six traits: height, retrogression probability (i.e. shrinkage), biomass, root:shoot ratio, nodule number, and nodule viability. Results The richness of plant endophytic microbial communities was determined by soil phosphorus level rather than by glyphosate treatment. However, for bacteria, the composition of these communities differed between glyphosate-treated and control soils across plant tissue types; no difference was observed for fungi. The plant bacterial communities in both soil types were dominated by potential nitrogen-fixing bacteria belonging to family Bradyrhizobiaceae, and particularly so in glyphosate-treated soils. Overall, though, these changes in plant bacterial communities had a minor effect on plant performance: the only difference we detected was that the probability of retrogression was occasionally higher in glyphosate-treated soils than in control soils. Conclusion Our findings indicate that glyphosate-based herbicides, when applied at the recommended frequency and concentration, may not have critical effects on the growth of short-lived weeds after the safety period has passed; however, the endophytic microbiota of such weeds may experience longer-lasting shifts in community structure.

Many plant species simultaneously interact with multiple symbionts, which can, but do not always, generate synergistic benefits for their host. We ask if plant life history (i.e. annual vs perennial) can play an important role in the outcomes of the tripartite symbiosis of legumes, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and rhizobia. We performed a meta-analysis of 88 studies examining outcomes of legume-AMF-rhizobia interactions on plant and microbial growth. Perennial legumes associating with AMF and rhizobia grew larger than expected based on their response to either symbiont alone (i.e. their response to co-inoculation was synergistic). By contrast, annual legume growth with co-inoculation did not differ from additive expectations. AMF and rhizobia differentially increased phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) tissue concentration. Rhizobium nodulation increased with mycorrhizal fungi inoculation, but mycorrhizal fungi colonization did not increase with rhizobium inoculation. Microbial responses to co-infection were significantly correlated with synergisms in plant growth. Our work supports a balanced plant stoichiometry mechanism for synergistic benefits. We find that synergisms are in part driven by reinvestment in complementary symbionts, and that time-lags in realizing benefits of reinvestment may limit synergisms in annuals. Optimization of microbiome composition to maximize synergisms may be critical to productivity, particularly for perennial legumes.

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is a widely sown pasture species in temperate regions. Under heat and moisture-deficit stress, its production is suppressed and tiller mortality increases, particularly when plants are simultaneously exposed to other stresses such as intense defoliation. We investigated the effects of extended grazing exclusion periods in spring and summer on herbage and soils of rotationally grazed, perennial ryegrass-dominant pastures at a summer-wet site and a summer-dry site in sheep and beef hill country in New Zealand. Treatments comprised ‘grazed’ (conventional rotational grazing), ‘early opening’ (grazing exclusion from mid-spring to mid-summer to allow perennial ryegrass to flower), and ‘deferred grazing’ (grazing exclusion from mid-spring to late summer to allow perennial ryegrass to flower and set seed). At both sites, deferred grazing increased perennial ryegrass tiller density and total vegetation cover, and reduced the abundance of broadleaf species and Pseudopithomyces chartarum spores for up to 15 months after exclusion compared with the grazed control. Herbage production was reduced during the deferred period but there was a growth surge thereafter so that herbage production over the study period was similar in the deferred and grazed treatments. Pasture nutritive values were lower in the deferred than the grazed treatment during the exclusion period but were similar in all treatments by the end of the following winter. In the autumn after deferring, seedlings contributed ~50% of the perennial ryegrass tillers present at the summer-dry site but only ~10% at the summer-wet site, where regrowth tillering of existing plants contributed a high proportion of the perennial ryegrass tillers present. Overall, early opening had few effects on the pasture, whereas deferred grazing had numerous positive effects on the pasture but only short-term effects on soil quality.

PREMISE Plants experiencing steep reproductive losses from herbivores should favor strategies promoting tolerance or resistance to that herbivory. However, the degree to which such strategies succeed in improving plant fitness under natural conditions needs further evaluation, especially for iterocarpic species. We tested whether reproductive effort by the iterocarpic Cirsium undulatum Spreng. (Wavyleaf thistle) provided within-season tolerance for floral herbivory through response to apical damage. METHODS We imposed apical damage and manipulated floral herbivory on later-flowering, non-apical flowerheads for two seasons. We asked: (1) is there evidence of compensatory potential to tolerate apical flowerhead damage? If so, (2) does the amount of herbivore pressure on non-apical flowerheads influence the magnitude of any compensatory response; and (3) is the response to apical damage sufficient to increase plant seed production under ambient floral herbivory over the flowering season? RESULTS Plants showed compensatory potential for apical head loss; apical damage increased seed contributions from later, lower positioned flowerheads. Further, the intensity of subsequent herbivore pressure influenced compensation outcomes. Equitable seed production under both levels of ambient herbivory occurred only in the year in which plants were larger and insect pressure was lower. Finally, the response to apical damage was sufficient to compensate for apical seed loss, but it did not consistently increase overall annual seed production under ambient floral herbivory. CONCLUSIONS Although this iterocarpic species can compensate for apical damage, tolerance for floral herbivory varied between years.

Background. Identification of spectacular ornamental perennial lianas for urban landscaping in southern cities is important for modern urban greening programs. The aim of this work was to study flowering peculiarities of Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica Thunb.).Materials and methods. The target material was honeysuckle plants growing in the environments of Southern Uzbekistan. Observations were conducted in 2019–2020 using conventional approaches.Results and conclusion. The inflorescence of L. japonica is an open dibotryoid, with flowers arranged along the lateral axes of the first order. Flowers are bisexual, zygomorphic. Blossoming of flowers in inflorescences occurs acropetally. The flowering period is almost 150–170 days (starts in April and lasts until the end of August). Dichogamy in the form of proterandry is observed in honeysuckle flowers. The male flowering phase comes the first. It starts 1.5–2.0 hours after the opening of the corolla and ends with the drying of the stamens. The corolla turns yellow 36 hours after the blooming of the flower and the stamens begin to dry out. This is the female phase. Over the next 84 hours, the pistil begins to dry out slowly, but the corolla of the flower lasts up to 96 hours. The duration of the female flowering phase is 60 hours. L. japonica is of considerable interest for vertical landscaping of urban communities. Plants remain ornamental for a long time. Studying this species as an essential oil plant is promising, since it contains a significant amount of germacrene D.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is the most widely cultivated perennial leguminous forage crop woldwide. MicroRNA156 (miR156) precursor genes from dicotyledonous species are reportedly useful for improving alfalfa plant architecture and abiotic stress resistance. However, there has been no report on whether a miR156 precursor gene from a monocotyledonous species functions in alfalfa. We introduced two tandem precursor genes of miR156, rice Osa-MIR156b and Osa-MIR156c (Osa-MIR156bc), into alfalfa. The expression of miR156 in the transgenic (TG) alfalfa was significantly elevated. Compared to wild-type plants, the TG plants overexpressing miR156 had more branches and leaves and showed improved salt and drought tolerance. Overexpression of miR156 slightly reduced plant height, but the biomass yield of TG plants grown in flowerpots was still increased. Forage quality of TG plants was markedly improved by reduction of acid detergent lignin (ADL) content and increase in crude protein content. The expression of the putative miR156 target genes MsSPL6, MsSPL12, and MsSPL13 in TG plants was repressed by miR156 overexpression, and that of all tested MsSPLs would be sharply increased under drought or salt stress. RNA sequencing revealed that overexpression of miR156 affected the expression of genes associated with abiotic stress resistance and plant development in multiple pathways. This first report of overexpression of monocot miR156 precursors in alfalfa sheds light on the function of miRNA156 precursors from the monocot species rice that could be used for genetic improvement of the dicot forage crop alfalfa.

Cicer milkvetch (Astragalus cicer L.) (CMV) is a non-bloating, perennial legume that has shown persistence under grazing. Limited information is available on its seedling establishment and subsequent forage yield and nutritive value in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) mixtures. Field plots were seeded in May 2013 at Melfort, SK, Canada, to evaluate ‘Oxley II’ cicer milkvetch performance in ‘AC Grazeland’ alfalfa or alfalfa and ‘AC Success’ hybrid bromegrass (Bromus riparius Rehmann× Bromus inermis Leyss.) mixtures from 2014 to 2017. Two controlled environment tests were also conducted by treating seeds of CMV using alfalfa root aqueous extract. Seed germination and seedling height of CMV were significantly reduced in aqueous extract. In the field, establishment of CMV in a mixture containing alfalfa was reduced, and CMV dry matter proportion in the mixture increased only 3.5% over three years. Increasing CMV seeding rate did not increase its dry matter (DM) percent in the mixtures, indicating a high allelopathic effect of alfalfa. Forage DM yield of all mixtures was linearly correlated to the proportion of alfalfa, and adding hybrid brome did not increase the DM yield. Forage DM yield was higher for the three-cut than the two-cut treatments for CMV–alfalfa mixtures, but there was no difference between the cutting frequency for CMV–alfalfa–hybrid brome mixtures. Fiber concentrations decreased linearly with increased CMV seeding rate in the mixtures. This study showed that CMV establishment in alfalfa mixtures was reduced in a same-row seeding, and the allelopathic effect was not reduced by lower alfalfa seeding rates or adding a grass.

Forest ecology traditionally focuses on plant growth and survival, leaving seed production as a major demographic process lacking a framework for how it will be affected by global change. Understanding plant reproductive responses to changing climate is complicated by masting, the annually variable seed production synchronized within populations. Predicting trends in masting is crucial, because masting impacts seed predation and pollination enough to override simple trends in mean seed production. Proximate mechanisms of seed production patterns in perennial plants are gathered to identify processes through which masting may be affected by a changing environment. Predicting trends in masting will require understanding the mechanisms that cause predictable seed failure after high-seed years, and the stochastic mechanisms that synchronize individuals in high-seed years.

A study was carried out to evaluate 10 perennial forage grass accessions from 4 species for herbage dry matter yield and nutritional quality at Holetta Agricultural Research Center. The evaluated grasses species and varieties were one Desho grass (Pennisetum) variety Kulumsa, four Urochloa decumbens (ILRI-14721, ILRI-14720, ILRI-13205 and ILRI-10871), three Urochloa ruziziensis (ILRI-14813, ILRI-14774 and ILRI-13332) and two Setaria sphacelata (ILRI-143 and ILRI-6543) accessions. Plant height and forage dry matter yield were significantly affected by accession over years, during the establishment and production phases. Combined analysis indicated that the tested accessions varied significantly for plant height with the Setaria accessions taller than the other tested species. Combined data analysis revealed that forage dry matter yield significantly varied according to species and Desho grass (variety Kulumsa) was higher in dry matter yield than the other grasses tested. Fiber contents (NDF, ADF and ADL) were significantly influenced by accession. Crude protein yield differed among the accessions and Desho grass had higher crude protein, followed by U. decumbens (accession ILRI-13205), U. decumbens (accession ILRI-14721) and S. sphacelata (accession ILRI-6543). Based on dry matter yield and crude protein U. decumbens (accession ILRI-13205), U. ruziziensis (accession ILRI-13332), S. sphacelata (accession 6543) and Desho grass (var. Kulumsa) are recommended as alternative forage grasses for the study area and similar agro-ecologies.

Phenological studies of medicinal plants have been less explored especially for plants confined in the Himalayan region (India). Here we describe detailed phenological stages of Megacarpaea polyandra Benth. ex Madden. This perennial species belongs to the family Brassicaceae and is commonly known as Barmola or Barmau, being a highly valued traditional endemic medicinal plant of Himalaya. Seven principal growth stages from seed germination to senescence as per BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt und CHemische Industrie) scale have been described along with secondary growth stages. Barmola exhibited a long juvenile vegetative phase (~ 3 to 4 years) compared to the short reproductive development typical of long-lived semelparous species. The long vegetative phase is characterized by leaf development coupled with an increase in root size. Roots constitute the storage organ from which Barmola translocates resources for development in subsequent periods. At the time of inflorescence emergence (last growth cycle), Barmola root’s reached their maximum size, and the translocation of resources coupled with leaf development sustain the reproductive effort of this species, culminating then with fruit ripening and plant death. The application of the BBCH scale was useful to identify the leaf development phase as the most critical growth stage on Barmola. Future conservation strategies aimed to protect Barmola wild populations should incentive the cultivation of this species to warrant their sustainable use among farmers from the Himalayas.

Botanical explorations in the alpine zone of the Shahvar and Shah Kouh Mountains from Semnan and Golestan Provinces (northeastern Iran) led to the collection of interesting specimens of the genus Silene L. (Caryophyllaceae). Taxonomic study of these plants and comparison with determined plant specimens showed that the specimens belong to an unknown species. I describe it as S. aminiradii Gholipour, belonging to section Auriculatae (Boiss.) Schischk. from northeastern Iran. The new species is compared with S. lucida Chowdhuri and S. crispans Litv. as the most similar species. Silene aminiradii is a caespitose perennial alpine gynodioecious plant with prostrate stems covered with dense, retrorsely simple hairs. The distribution, ecological features, reproductive phenology, and photos of S. aminiradii are presented.

Grassland reconstruction is a major approach to alleviate the ‘black beach’ in Sanjiangyuan of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. It is vital to understand how to manage the planting grassland after reconstruction. And which artificial grassland management pattern is more likely to restore the degraded grassland of ‘black beach?’ To provide the scientific basis for the restoration of ‘black beach’, we investigated the changes in vegetation characteristics, soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial community structure of planting grassland under different management patterns, and explored the effect of the management patterns on community succession of planting grassland. In this study, vegetation characteristics and soil physicochemical properties were measured by field investigation and laboratory analyses, respectively. Soil microbial community composition was determined by high-throughput sequencing techniques. The results showed that there were significant differences in vegetation characteristics, soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial community structure of the planting grassland under different management patterns. Actinobacteria and Basidiomycota were mainly controlled by vegetation plant species diversity, aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil organic carbon (SOC). Shannon-Wiener index, AGB and SOC peaked and the relative abundance of amplicon sequence variants annotated by Actinobacteria and Basidiomycota were significantly enriched under the management pattern of the planting once treatment. Additionally, the soil had the highest bacterial diversity and the lowest fungal diversity under the planting once treatment, becoming a ‘bacterial’ soil. These vegetation characteristics and soil environment were more conducive to overall positive community succession, indicating that the planting once treatment is the most reasonable management pattern for restoring the ‘black beach’.

FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) promotes flowering by integrating six genetic pathways. In Arabidopsis, the FT protein is transported from leaves to shoot apices and induces flowering. However, contradictory conclusions about floral induction via graft-transmitted FT in trees were reported in previous studies. We obtained extremely early-flowering transgenic woody Jatropha curcas L. by overexpression of J. curcas FT using Arabidopsis thaliana SUCROSE TRANSPORTER 2 (SUC2) promoter (SUC2:JcFT) and non-flowering transgenic J. curcas by RNA interference (RNAi), which were used to investigate the function of graft-transmitted JcFT in floral induction in woody perennials. Scions from five wild-type species of the Jatropha genus and from JcFT-RNAi transgenic J. curcas were grafted onto SUC2:JcFT rootstocks. Most grafted plants produced flowers in 1–2 months, and the flowering percentage and frequency of various grafted plants decreased with increasing scion length. Consistently, FT protein abundance in scions also decreased with increasing distance from graft junctions to the buds. These findings suggest that FT proteins can be transmitted by grafting and can induce the floral transition in woody perennials, and the efficiency of graft-transmitted JcFT for floral induction depends on the scion length, which may help explain previous seemingly contradictory observations regarding floral induction via graft-transmitted FT in trees., Jatropha curcas florigens (JcFT proteins) can be transmitted by grafting to induce floral transition in woody perennial species of the Jatropha genus, and the efficiency of graft-transmitted JcFT for floral induction depends on the transporting distance.

The ability of halophytes to thrive under saline conditions implies efficient ROS detoxification and signalling. In this work, the causal relationship between key membrane transport processes involved in maintaining plant ionic homeostasis and oxidative stress tolerance was investigated in a succulent perennial halophyte Sarcocornia quinqueflora. The flux responses to oxidative stresses induced by either hydroxyl radicals (OH•) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were governed largely by (1) the type of ROS applied; (2) the tissue-specific origin and function (parenchymatic or chlorenchymatic); and (3) the tissue location in respect to the suberized endodermal barrier. The latter implied significant differences in responses between outer (water storage-WS; palisade tissue-Pa) and inner (internal photosynthetic layer-IP; stele parenchyma-SP) stem tissues. The ability of the cell to retain K+ under OH• stress varied between different tissues and was ranked in the following descending order: WS>Pa>IP>SP. OH• always led to Ca2+ influx in all stem tissues, while treatment with H2O2 induced tissue-specific Ca2+ “signatures”. The inner/outer K+ ratio was the highest (~2.6) under the optimum NaCl dosage (200 mM) in comparison to non-saline (~0.4) and severe (800 mM; ~0.7) conditions, implying that a higher K+ concentration in the inner tissues is important for optimum growth. The overall results demonstrate a clear link between plant anatomical structure and ability of its tissues to maintain ionic homeostasis, via modulating their ROS sensitivity.

Changes in grazing intensity affect forage production and performance of animal on C4 grass pastures; however, these relationships are not well defined for cattle grazing on limpograss (Hemarthria altissima (Poir) Stapf & C.E. Hubb. cv. Flórida) under continuous stocking. The objective of this study was to quantify plant and animal production from Flórida limpograss pastures, managed at different grazing intensities by beef heifers (i.e. different sward heights) in order to define pasture management outcomes that maximise plant and animal responses. For a 3-year period, the influence exerted by the sward height (10, 20, 30 and 40 cm) was assessed. Greater total herbage accumulation and herbage accumulation rate were observed for the more lenient grazing heights (30 and 40 cm). The 20-, 30- and 40-cm heights revealed similar heifer average daily gain of 0.49 kg liveweight (LW) animal–1 day–1, reducing at the rate of 0.04 kg LW animal–1 day–1, for each cm decrease below 19 cm, according to a segmented equation. LW gain per area showed a quadratic response to the sward height, with optimum values (i.e. 2.1 kg LW ha–1 day–1) achieved at a pasture height of around 21 cm. Therefore, to optimise cattle performance on continuously stocked Flórida limpograss pastures, a sward height of ~20 cm should be maintained.

The introduction of exotic pasture germplasm has formed the foundation of many Australian grazing systems. Scientists have searched the world for plants to improve the feedbase, amassing collections of diverse genetic material, creating genebanks that have made a large contribution to feedbase productivity. These genebanks contain a vast range of legumes, grasses, herbs and shrubs with growth habits ranging from small herbaceous plants to woody trees and life cycles from annuals to short- and long-term perennial plants. They have been collected from cool temperate to tropical climates and arid to high-rainfall zones. Hundreds of cultivars have been developed from material either collected by Australian plant breeders overseas or introduced from overseas genebanks. The collection of this germplasm has enabled plant breeders to extend the area of adaptation of species into climates, soils and systems previously considered marginal. The importance to Australian and world agriculture is increasing as plant breeders seek traits to meet the challenges of a changing climate and animal production systems. Furthermore, urbanisation, landscape degradation and political instability are making it increasingly difficult to collect pasture and forage germplasm from native grasslands in many countries. This emphasises the need to maintain and improve the capacity of the Australian Pastures Genebank (APG). The APG houses ~85 000 accessions and is a modern, online source of diversity for plant scientists around the world. This paper summarises the history of the founding genebank collections, their environment and farming systems focus, and the visionary and resourceful individuals that built them.

Hair fescue (Festuca filiformis Pourr.) is a tuft-forming perennial grass of concern in lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.) as tufts form dense sods that reduce lowbush blueberry yield and inhibit harvest. Although generally tolerant to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides, injury to some Festuca spp. following clethodim applications has been reported. ACCase-inhibiting herbicides are important for non-bearing and bearing year perennial grass management in lowbush blueberry but have not been extensively evaluated for hair fescue management. The objectives of this research were to (1) determine the relative efficacy of foramsulfuron, fluazifop-P-butyl, sethoxydim, and clethodim on hair fescue, and (2) determine if foramsulfuron tank mixtures with fluazifop-P-butyl, sethoxydim, and clethodim improve hair fescue suppression. None of the herbicides evaluated caused unacceptable injury to lowbush blueberry. Foramsulfuron (35 g a.i. ha−1) reduced hair fescue total tuft density, flowering tuft density, and flowering tuft inflorescence number. Fluazifop-P-butyl (250 g a.i. ha−1) and sethoxydim (495 g a.i. ha−1) caused variable levels of visual injury to hair fescue and did not reduce total tuft density, flowering tuft density, or flowering tuft inflorescence number. Clethodim (91 g a.i. ha−1), however, caused >50% visual injury to hair fescue and reduced hair fescue total tuft density, flowering tuft density, and flowering tuft inflorescence number. Fluazifop-P-butyl and sethoxydim tank mixtures with foramsulfuron did not increase hair fescue suppression relative to foramsulfuron alone. A foramsulfuron + clethodim tank mixture provided equivalent hair fescue suppression as either herbicide applied alone. Foramsulfuron and clethodim should therefore be used in rotation rather than tank mixture to manage hair fescue in lowbush blueberry.

Hemidesmus indicus (L.) R. Br. ex Schult. (Indian Sarsaparilla of the family Apocynaceae) is a perennial climber used in traditional and modern medicinal systems since ages due to presence of a phytoconstituent MBAlD (2-hydroxy 4-methoxy benzaldehyde) in its roots. The morphological and light microscopic examination of the foliar appendages of the in vitro regenerated plants revealed the presence of abnormalities in micro-morpho-anatomy of leaves, caused major shortfall to the acclimatization of in vitro raised plants and their survival success in the field. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the effects of seismic stress treatment on the morphology, micro-morpho-anatomy and photosynthetic pigments development in tissue culture raised plants of H. indicus. The cultures were agitated at 80 rpm for 6.0 min using an incubator shaker for 4 wk twice a day. Significant phenotypic improvements with enhanced quality of shoots, roots and leaf number (14.0 ± 0.29), leaf area (3.2 ± 0.20 cm length and 1.0 ± 0.15 cm width), and growth ratio (4.8 ± 0.33 g fresh weight) were observed. The in vitro induced foliar micro-morpho-anatomical anomalies such as abnormal and non-functional stomata, underdeveloped cuticle, mesophyll tissues and vascular elements were mitigated by the seismic stress; and well organized tissues were developed. Seismic stress also enhanced the development of photosynthetic pigments in the leaves (8.20 μg g−1 FW) as compared with the control plantlets (6.89 μg g−1 FW). We postulate that the application of seismic stress alleviate in vitro induced morphological and anatomical anomalies at in vitro stage, and the developed plantlets exhibited improved survival rate during ex vitro and in vivo hardening processes.

Accumulation of secondary metabolites may exhibit developmentally regulated variation in different plant organs. Moreover, prevailing environmental conditions may interact with development-related variations in plant traits. In this study, we examined developmentally regulated variation in phenolic accumulation in the twigs of dioecious Populus tremula (L.) and how the effects of elevated temperature and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation on growth and phenolics accumulation varied as the plants get older. In an open-field experiment, six female and six male genotypes were exposed to single and combined elevated temperature and UVB radiation treatments for three consecutive growing seasons. The concentrations of low molecular weight phenolics and condensed tannins did not show age-dependent variation in the twigs. In temperature-treated plants, diameter growth rate decreased, and concentration of condensed tannins increased as plants aged; there were no cumulative effects of elevated UVB radiation on growth and phenolic accumulation. Females maintained a higher concentration of low molecular weight phenolics throughout the experimental period; however, growth and phenolic concentration did not vary over time in females and males. Our results suggest that phenolic accumulation in perennial plants may not necessarily always exhibit age-dependent variation and the effects of elevated temperature on growth and phenolic may diminish as plants get older.

Navua sedge [Cyperus aromaticus (Ridl.) Mattf. & Kuek.], is a hard to control C4 perennial weed species in tropical regions of Australia. Knowledge of its seed biology could help to develop integrated weed management programs for this species. This study was conducted under laboratory and screenhouse conditions to evaluate the effect of alternating day/night temperatures, light, pretreatment high temperatures, burial depth, and flooding depth on the germination and emergence of two populations (Ingham and Tablelands) of C. aromaticus. Both populations germinated at temperatures ranging from 20/10 to 35/25 C; however, the Ingham population germination (76%) was greater than the Tablelands population (42%) at the highest temperature regime (35/25 C). None of the populations germinated at 15/5 C. Darkness completely inhibited germination in both populations, suggesting that the seeds are positively photoblastic. Seeds (dry and wet) of both populations germinated after exposure to pretreatment temperatures of up to 100 C for 5 min. After pretreatment at 150 C, only the Ingham population germinated, and germination was greater for dry seeds (62%) than for wet seeds (1%). Neither population germinated after exposure to 200 C. For both populations, maximum germination was observed for seeds at 0 cm; a burial depth of 0.5 cm completely inhibited emergence of the Tablelands population, and a burial depth of 2.0 cm completely inhibited germination of the Ingham population. A flooding depth of 10 cm greatly reduced emergence in both populations compared with 0 cm (62% and 78%) but 12% to 14% of seedlings still emerged, suggesting the need to integrate flooding with other management tools. The results also suggest that the Ingham population may have a greater potential to spread into new areas or become more invasive than the Tablelands population. Knowledge gained from this study can be used to manage C. aromaticus by fire/burning, tillage, and flooding.

Perennial crops are emerging as an effective strategy for adapting to climate change, but also for mitigating net greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. This study aims to investigate the agronomic and physiological performance of selected perennial wheat genotypes derived from crosses between Triticum aestivum L. and Thinopyrum spp to evaluate if they could give a contribute both to face climate changes and to restore soil health. Four perennial wheat genotypes were grown in Central Italy and compared in terms of agronomic traits, root development (biomass and length) and ecophysiological parameters with an annual common wheat cultivar. Plants were, on average, taller in perennial wheat genotypes than in annual wheat as well as the number of tillers per plant (+ 49%), root length (+ 43%) and root biomass (+ 31%) in both years, whereas, perennial wheat kernels were smaller (− 15%). Post harvest regrowth occurred in different amounts in all perennial wheat genotypes. In terms of the ecophysiological response, perennial wheat lines revealed higher soil respiration and lower stomatal conductance than annual wheat. On the contrary, transpiration rate, water use efficiency and photosynthesis were higher in annual genotype than in perennial ones. The environmental benefits of adopting perennial grains are discussed together with suggestions on optimal field management and future breeding strategies.

Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass) shows variable levels of seed physiological dormancy (PD), which depends on the genotype and environmental condition during seed development. To analyse the effect of field temperature and precipitation during seed filling on the PD, two cultivars were sown on five dates in 2014 and 2015. After harvest, the level of seed PD was 4–28%. High-temperature stress (>29°C) in the field during seed development, measured as heat stress units (HSUs), reduced seed PD (increased germination) at harvest. After 9 months of dry afterripening under laboratory conditions, mean dormant seed values were reduced from 15 ± 8 to 8 ± 7%. An increment in the seed PD level reduced seedling emergence in the field. Seed with 20% PD produced only 50% of field emergence, under optimal environmental conditions. Different vigour tests were conducted and each was compared with field emergence. The speed of germination, through the first count at 5 d of the standard germination test, and the shoot length at 10 d were better associated with the seedling establishment in the field. The HSU could be useful to establish a possible PD range in the seed of perennial ryegrass after the growing season. The development of models considering the HSU and other climatic parameters could motivate future studies.

Societal Impact Statement Plant scientists around the planet are working to develop new perennial grains and learn how to grow them in diverse agroecosystems. Perennial grain agriculture could accomplish long‐term sustainability by providing food for humans without degrading the ecosystem processes on which food productivity depends. However, more research is needed to understand how to pursue perennial grain food system transformation that builds justice within diverse human societies. We use a case study from Palestine to explore why this research should encompass many academic disciplines and go beyond them to engage communities. By paying attention to deeper agricultural systems of relationship that shape change, researchers may better develop and integrate the knowledge necessary to help realize a “social perennial vision.” Summary Research across plant science domains is foundational to the development of novel grain agroecosystems that feature perenniality and diversity. Because agriculture is social as well as biophysical, research is also needed to address how to make just and fair human community arrangements and socioeconomic relationships within diverse, perennial grain agroecosystems. As a first step, we draw on agroecology as well as critical concepts from the social sciences and humanities in order to identify dominant systems of relationship in agriculture, recognize their past and present impacts in the ecosphere, and envision alternatives. To ground our analysis, we use a case study of a research group in Palestine that engages communities in co‐producing plant knowledge. Our social perennial vision recognizes the effort required by human communities to find ways to endure in agricultural landscapes. Alternative systems of relationship are both necessary and possible to build diverse, perennial grain agroecosystems. The scientific and social knowledge required for positive agricultural transformation may be gained through more integrated research efforts. The social perennial vision that we characterize affirms the importance of transdisciplinary inquiry for the development of diverse, perennial grain agriculture. We highlight the ethical and practical values of participatory approaches and accessible tools for future research.

Summary •A rchitecture can vary widely across species. Both steeper leaf angles and increased self-shading are thought to reduce potential carbon gain by decreasing total light interception. An alternative hypothesis is that steeper leaf angles have evolved to improve day-long carbon gain by emphasising light interception from low angles. • Here we relate variation in architectural properties (leaf angle and leaf size) to cross-species patterns of leaf display, light capture and simulated carbon gain in branching-units of 38 perennial species occurring at two sites in Australian forest. Architectural comparison was made possible by combining 3D-digitising with the architecture model YPLANT. • Species with shallow angled leaves had greater daily light interception and potentially greater carbon gain. Self-shading, rather than leaf angle, explained most variance between species in light capture and potential carbon gain. Species average leaf size was the most important determinant of self-shading. • Our results provide the first cross-species evidence that steeper leaf angles function to reduce exposure to excess light levels during the middle of the day, more than to maximise carbon gain.

Ptilostemon is a small genus of the subtribe Carduinae (Asteraceae) that includes 15 species as annual or perennial herbs or small shrubs, spread in the Mediterranean arch, from Crimea and Turkey to the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco. Several species of this genus have been studied for the content of non-volatile metabolites whereas few investigations have been carried out on their essential oils. In the present study the chemical composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Ptilostemon gnaphaloides subsp. pseudofruticosus, belonging to Section Ptilostemon, endemic of South Greece and Turkey, and collected in the island of Kythira, was analyzed by GC-MS. The result showed the presence of large quantity of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons with germacrene D (20.0%) as the most abundant component, followed by (E)-caryophyllene (6.8%). Among the other metabolites hexacosane (29.1%) and manoyl oxide (12.1%) were the most abundant.

Marrubium cuneatum Banks & Sol. is a perennial plant belonging to the Iran-Turan phytogeographical region, which is distributed in a limited region in the Middle East (Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Turkey, Iraq and Iran). The chemical composition of the essential oil of Marrubium cuneatum Banks & Sol. (Lamiaceae) from Turkey was characterized. Hydro-distilled essential oil was analysed simultaneously by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), respectively. A total of 75 components representing 94.7% of the oil were determined; linaool (29.7%), caryophyllene oxide (9.8%), and β-caryophyllene (9.0%) were identified as the major compounds, to the best of our knowledge for the first time from Turkey.

Plants with a history of overgrazing show trait-mediated legacy effects. These legacy effects strongly influence the growth dynamics and stress tolerance of plants, thus affecting ecosystem functioning. Long-term overgrazing has dramatic effects on plant growth and carbon assimilation via asexual propagation. However, the link between nitrogen (N) absorbability and assimilation with grazing-induced plant legacy effects remains largely unknown. We investigated the strength of legacy effects induced by long-term overgrazing on N uptake and metabolism in the clonal plant Leymus chinensis, and its associated changes at the physiological and molecular levels. These tests were conducted in both field and greenhouse experiments. The clonal offspring of overgrazed L. chinensis were significantly smaller than the control offspring, with lower individual N uptake and utilisation efficiency, indicating that the N dynamics were affected by plant legacy effects. The response ratios of root length and biomass to N patches in the clonal offspring of overgrazed L. chinensis were significantly higher than those of the control, indicating that root nutrient foraging plasticity increased in response to grazing-induced N heterogeneity. Moreover, the observed plant legacy effects decreased N acquirement but significantly increased N assimilation by increasing N resorption efficiency, with biotic stress memory activated at the enzymatic and transcriptional levels. We propose that multigenerational exposure of perennial plants to herbivore foraging can produce a legacy effect on N uptake, which offers insights into the potential resilience of grasslands to overgrazing.

Plant belowground storage traits are important for mediating environmental stress, but their role in response to water availability and their coordination with above-ground traits is largely unknown. We predicted a coordination of conservative above- and belowground traits and preferential storage of water-soluble carbohydrates in the drier grassland and acquisitive traits and preferential storage of starch in the wetter grassland. We examined the relationship between plant preference/response for water availability (habitat preference, intrinsic water use efficiency, and leaf relative water content deficit) and the traits of belowground storage organs (morphological, anatomical, and storage carbohydrate concentration) in 37 perennial herbs from a wet and a dry temperate grassland in the Czech Republic. Species from the dry grassland preferred lower moisture, had greater water use efficiency than those from the wet grassland, and were also more conservative in their morphological and leaf traits. Although dry grassland plants preferentially stored oligo- and polysaccharides, their water-use efficiency increased with greater concentrations of starch. Leaf relative water content deficit did not vary significantly between the grasslands and additionally, the relationship to plant economy was not always in accord with other measures of preference for water availability. Our results imply that belowground storage organs play a role in the response to reduced water availability. The strategies employed are further dependent upon the habitat and phylogeny of the species.

Ventenata [Ventenata dubia (Leers) Coss.] is one of several annual grass invaders of the western United States. Ventenata dubia is documented reducing the forage availability for livestock and wildlife as well as lowering biodiversity in the Great Basin. This species has recently spread to the Great Plains, where it could bring these impacts with it. We attempt to answer questions on whether or not conservation practices, in this case removal of V. dubia with herbicide, result in recovery of forage resources and biodiversity. We answer these questions by measuring biomass, cover, and nutrient content 1-yr posttreatment at 9 sites in Sheridan County, WY, conducted in two years. Perennial grasses have higher crude protein and total digestible nutrients than V. dubia, and removal of V. dubia resulted in a positive perennial grass response both years. Further, the differences in pattern of growth between perennial and annual species, with annual grasses quickly senescing early in the year, make perennial grasses a more dependable forage base with higher available nutrients. Interestingly, total biomass and nutrient mass did not change after V. dubia removal due to equal replacement with perennial grasses. Species richness and diversity were unaffected by removal of V. dubia. Our results suggest that managing invasive annual grasses, particularly V. dubia, in the Northern Great Plains can improve forage resources for livestock and wildlife while maintaining species diversity. Therefore, proactive monitoring and management efforts to prevent spread should be prioritized in this region.

Knowing the abundance of different plant species provides insights into the properties of vegetation communities, such as flammability. Therefore, a fundamental goal in ecology is identifying environmental conditions affecting the abundance of plant species across landscapes. Water and light are important environmental moderators of plant growth, and by extension, abundance. In the context of understanding forest flammability, the abundance of a flammable plant species in terms of its cover or biomass can shape the flammability of the whole vegetation community. We conducted a glasshouse experiment to determine the impact of drought and shade on growth, biomass allocation and leaf morphology of forest wiregrass Tetrarrhena juncea R.Br., a rhizomatous perennial grass. When it is abundant, this species is known to contribute substantially to the flammability of eucalypt forest understories (via both ignitability and combustibility). Contrasting hypotheses in the literature predict that drought can have a weaker, stronger, or independent (uncoupled) impact on plant growth when light is limiting. We used a randomized complete block design with ten treatments from the combination of two water levels (drought, well-watered) and five light levels (100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%). Drought and shade were found to have independent effects on wiregrass growth, biomass allocation, and leaf morphology, supporting the uncoupled hypothesis. Growth showed greater plasticity in response to drought, while biomass allocation and leaf morphology showed greater plasticity in response to shade. Our results suggest that wiregrass is more likely to be abundant in terms of its cover and biomass when water is not limiting. Under these conditions, the increased wiregrass abundance could create a window of increased flammability for the forest ecosystem.

Defining the long-term effects of liquid dairy manure (LDM) applied by a recommended low emission method is important to ensure sustainable grass production and dairy operations. We used natural abundance δ15N and conventional measurements in a long term field experiment to better understand the long-term fate of N applied as LDM, mineral fertilizer (MIN) and both (ALT). We investigated the effects of long-term applications of LDM (with low-emission trailing shoe), MIN, and alternating LDM and MIN (ALT) on grass N uptake, soil N stocks, N losses and δ15N natural abundance in grass, soil and fine heavy fraction (silt + clay size heavy soil). Nominal annual rates of total N were 200 and 400 kg ha−1 for MIN and 400 and 800 kg ha−1 for LDM. MIN and LDM (at 400 kg N ha−1) had similar NUE but LDM accumulated more total soil N (13% of applied) with less losses than MIN; ALT had high yields and losses. Herbage δ15N of MIN declined to near MIN levels after 10–15 years, indicating influence of pre trial management. Herbage δ15N of LDM was consistently lower than applied LDM, implying uptake of depleted urine N. High rates of enriched LDM had little effect on soil δ15N suggesting soil N was quite stable and enriched N was lost by non discriminating pathways like leaching. The physically protected fine heavy fraction contained most soil N. Clearer understanding of long-term N dynamics can improve sustainability of heavily fertilized perennial grasses on dairy farms.

Perennial pastures are the dominant feedbase in many regions of the world, and offer several advantages when compared with an annual pasture system. In Western Australia (WA) there has been a concerted effort over seven decades to develop new perennial pasture options and expand the adoption of suitable species. The agricultural region of WA (i.e. south-western Australia) is characterised by a Mediterranean climate where the 5–7 month summer drought has proved a considerable challenge with only a small number of the many promising species being adopted commercially. Research, development, and extension have covered a wide range of herbaceous perennial legumes, leguminous and native shrubs, herbs, and temperate and warm season grasses. This paper reviews the literature to determine whether a perennial pasture must satisfy the following criteria to be successful and widely adopted in south-western Australia: (i) sourced from a similar Mediterranean environment and adapted to the target soils; (ii) have a relative advantage over the annual-based system it replaces; (iii) a robust management package; and (iv) a viable seed supply. The findings of this review highlight that perennial pastures must indeed satisfy multiple criteria to be commercially successful. Notably, the requirement for the source of the germplasm to have a good match between climate and soils is less clear because some of the commercially successful species come from diverse environments. We conclude with some key learnings for future perennial pasture development as climate change intensifies the research challenge and the drive for producers to adapt.

Translocation of threatened plants is increasingly being used as a conservation or mitigation action. The success of this practice is mixed and methods to increase likelihood of success are commonly investigated. Using a long-lived perennial shrub endemic to the Sydney Basin, Australia, as a case study, we examined the role of pre-planting nutrient loading (High, Low) and addition of Provenance (home soil) on growth and flowering, where Provenance soils had on average 50% lower nutrients than the Low treatment. We found that Provenance- and Low-treated plants grew better under propagation compared to High treatments, but these differences did not persist. At 11 months post-planting, Provenance-treated plants had growth rates no different from any other treatments and that plants under both High and Provenance soil treatments had higher peak flowering events, indicating that Provenance-treated soils could confer a flowering advantage akin to fertilisation. This study demonstrates that there were no negative effects of growing plants using home soil, despite a lower nutrient status than standard propagation medium. Translocations, particularly reintroduction or augmentation, should consider home soil treatment within pilot studies as a simple and cost-effective method of potentially reducing transplant shock, providing ethical and phytosanitary measures are addressed.

Aims Grassland-to-shrubland transition is a common form of land degradation in drylands worldwide. It is often attributed to changes in disturbance regimes, particularly overgrazing. A myriad of direct and indirect effects (e.g., accelerated soil erosion) of grazing may favor shrubs over grasses, but their relative importance is unclear. We tested the hypothesis that topsoil “winnowing” by wind erosion would differentially affect grass and shrub seedling establishment to promote shrub recruitment over that of grass. Methods We monitored germination and seedling growth of contrasting perennial grass (Bouteloua eriopoda, Sporobolus airoides, and Aristida purpurea) and shrub (Prosopis glandulosa, Atriplex canescens, and Larrea tridentata) functional groups on field-collected non-winnowed and winnowed soils under well-watered greenhouse conditions. Results Non-winnowed soils were finer-textured and had higher nutrient contents than winnowed soils, but based on desorption curves, winnowed soils had more plant-available moisture. Contrary to expectations, seed germination and seedling growth on winnowed and non-winnowed soils were comparable within a given species. The N2-fixing deciduous shrub P. glandulosa was first to emerge and complete germination, and had the greatest biomass accumulation of all species. Conclusions Germination and early seedling growth of grasses and shrubs on winnowed soils were not adversely nor differentially affected comparing with that observed on non-winnowed soils under well-watered greenhouse conditions. Early germination and rapid growth may give P. glandulosa a competitive advantage over grasses and other shrub species at the establishment stage in grazed grasslands. Field establishment experiments are needed to confirm our findings in these controlled environment trials.

The legume plant alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a widely cultivated perennial forage due to its high protein content, palatability, and strong adaptability to diverse agro-ecological zones. Alfalfa is a self-incompatible cross-pollinated autotetraploid species with tetrasomic inheritance. Therefore, maintaining excellent traits through seed reproduction is a prime challenge in alfalfa. However, the cutting propagation technology could enable consistent multiplication of quality plants that are genetically identical to the parent plant. The current study aimed to develop a simple, cost-effective, reproducible, and efficient hydroponic cutting method to preserve alfalfa plants and for molecular research. In this study, alfalfa landrace ‘Wudi’ was grown in hydroponics for 30 days and used as source material for cuttings. The top, middle and bottom sections of its stem were used as cuttings. The rooting rate, root length, and stem height of the different stem sections were compared to determine the best segment for alfalfa propagation in four nutrient treatments (HM, HM + 1/500H, HM + 1/1000H and d HM + 1/2000H). After 21 days of culture, the rooting rates of all the three stem types under four cutting nutrient solutions were above 78%. The rooting rate of the middle and bottom parts in HM + 1/1000 H and HM + 1/2000 H nutrient solutions reached more than 93%, with a higher health survey score (> 4.70). In conclusion, this study developed a de novo cutting propagation method that can be used to conserve and propagate germplasm in breeding programs and research. This method is a new report on the cutting propagation of alfalfa by hydroponics, which could supplement the existing cutting propagation methods.

Loss of chlorophyll (Chl) is a hallmark of leaf senescence, which may be regulated by Chl catabolic genes, including NON-YELLOW COLORING 1 (NYC1)-like (NOL). The objective of this study was to determine molecular factors and metabolic pathways underlying NOL regulation of leaf senescence in perennial grass species. LpNOL was cloned from perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and found to be highly expressed in senescent leaves. Transient overexpression of LpNOL accelerated leaf senescence and Chl b degradation in Nicotiana benthamiana. LpNOL RNA interference (NOLi) in perennial ryegrass not only significantly blocked Chl degradation in senescent leaves, but also delayed initiation and progression of leaf senescence. This study found that NOL, in addition to functioning as a Chl b reductase, could enact the functional stay-green phenotype in perennial grass species, as manifested by increased photosynthetic activities in NOLi plants. Comparative transcriptomic analysis revealed that NOL-mediated functional stay-green in perennial ryegrass was mainly achieved through the modulation of Chl catabolism, light harvesting for photosynthesis, photorespiration, cytochrome respiration, carbohydrate catabolism, oxidative detoxification, and abscisic acid biosynthesis and signaling pathways.

Mountainous areas and their endemic plant diversity are threatened by global climate change and invasive species. Mountain plant invasions have historically been minimal, however, climate change and increased anthropogenic activity (e.g. roads and vehicles) are amplifying invasion pressure. We assessed plant performance (stem density and fruit production) of the invasive non-native forb Linaria dalmatica along three mountain roads, over an eight-year period (2008–2015) in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), USA. We evaluated how L. dalmatica performed in response to elevation, changed over time, responded to climate and how the climate of our sites has changed, and compared elevation, climate, micro-topography (slope aspect and angle), and fruit production among sites with differing temporal trends. Linaria dalmatica stem density and fruit production increased with elevation and demonstrated two temporal groups, those populations where stem densities shrank and those that remained stable or grew over time. Stem density demonstrated a hump-shaped response to summer mean temperature, while fruit production decreased with summer mean maximum temperature and showed a hump-shaped response to winter precipitation. Analysis of both short and long-term climate data from our sites, demonstrated that summer temperatures have been increasing and winters getting wetter. The shrinking population group had a lower mean elevation, hotter summer temperatures, drier winters, had plots that differed in slope aspect and angle from the stable/growing group, and produced less fruit. Regional climate projections predict that the observed climate trends will continue, which will likely benefit L. dalmatica populations at higher elevations. We conclude that L. dalmatica may persist at lower elevations where it poses little invasive threat, and its invasion into the mountains will continue along roadways, expanding into higher elevations of the GYE.
