A revision of Penstemon sect. Saccanthera subsect. Serrulati includes a new species (P. salmonensis), a new variety (P. triphyllus var. infernalis), and the elevation of a subspecies to species (P. curtiflorus), bringing the total number of species to eight, which are keyed and described, complete with nomenclature and type citations.

A name (Eremogone loisiae) is provided for those plants from northern Utah and southeastern Idaho that have gone under the misapplied name Eremogone kingii subsp. uintahensis. Eremogone loisiae, named in honor of Lois A. Arnow, is distinguished from E. kingii by its longer and narrower, flexuous leaves and its longer sepals, petals, styles, capsules, and seeds.

Nevada A new genus for Smelowskia holmgrenii (Brassicaceae). Brittonia 56: 238–244. 2004.—Nevada holmgrenii was originally described by Rollins as a Smelowskia, but based on phenetic similarities it appears to be more closely related to the arctic/alpine genera Braya and Eutrema. It is, however, sufficiently distinct from these genera to be placed in a monotypic genus, Nevada.

Lectotypes are selected for names of five taxa in five genera of Brassicaceae;Boechera, Cardamine, Caulanthus, Cusickiella, Descurainia. Fourteen new combinations are made in six genera:Boechera, Descurainia, Erysimum, Parrya, Physaria, andThelypodium.

A new variety of Draba pedicellata and a lectotype for D. cusickii (Brassicaceae). Brittonia 56: 107–114. 2004.—A closely related group of Great Basin endemic drabas, Draba cusickii O. E. Schulz, D. sphaeroides Payson, and D. pedicellata (Rollins & R. A. Price) Windham, are described, keyed, and discussed in order to put D. pedicellata var. wheelerensis N. H. Holmgren, var. nov. in perspective. Draba cusickii is endemic to Steens Mountain of southeastern Oregon, and D. sphaeroides is known only from three mountain ranges in Elko County, Nevada, whereas D. pedicellata is more widespread in mountain ranges of eastern Nevada in Elko, Eureka, Nye, and White Pine counties. Draba pedicellata var. pedicellata occupies most of the range of the species, with var. wheelerensis being restricted to the Snake Range, just to the east of the range of the typical variety.

Thirty-two additional herbaria have been called to our attention since the last installment of this series was published in August 2002. Information on these herbaria is presented below in alphabetical order by country. This brings the total number of herbaria added since the publication of Edition 8 to 425. Based on published sources (including contemporary correspondence) and the Humboldt expedition's field notebooks, some information on Humboldt and Bonpland's plant collections in their relation to Willdenow and his Species plantarum is provided. The genus Polygala served as a test sample. The Willdenow Herbarium (B-W) holds 23 Polygala specimens from the Humboldt expedition (several others were erroneously attributed to Humboldt), representing 17 of the 18 species described by Kunth in the Nova genera. The following main conclusions are drawn: (1) three types of handwriting can be recognised on the expedition's field labels in B-W, which are identified as Bonpland's, Humboldt's, and a third one that is tentatively ascribed to an unknown field assistant; (2) a full set of the plant collections from Venezuela was sent to Willdenow from Havana early in 1801 and had been received in Berlin by September 1802; (3) in vol. 3(2) of Willdenow's Species plantarum, published in early November 1802, a single species (Hypericum caracasanum) was described based on the new Humboldt material; (4) the numbers found on many of Humboldt's labels refer to the numbered entries in the field notebooks, but are not collection numbers in the modern sense, because many collections, on which no notes were taken, remained unnumbered; (5) numbering was fairly consistent, all duplicates of collections on which field notes exist being normally numbered, except when the label was accidentally lost; (6) the set of duplicates given by Humboldt to Willdenow was virtually complete, but the equally complete set in Bonpland's herbarium (P-Bonpl.), having been studied by Kunth in the first place, should be used to typify the names of new taxa first published in the Nova genera. Based on an improved understanding of the background of these collections, a recently proposed type designation for Polygala tenella Willd. is rejected. This long forgotten name is here neotypified in such a way as to retain its traditional place in the synonymy of P. paniculata L.

During preparation of manuscript for volume 2A of Intermountain Flora, we recognized the need to publish 11 new combinations and three second-step lectotypifications. The new combinations are: Eremogone fendleri var. plateauensis, E. fendleri var. porteri, E. fendleri var. brevicaulis, and E. kingii var. compacta (Caryophyllaceae), Atriplex gardneri var. robusta (Chenopodiaceae), Corydalis caseana var. brachycarpa (Fumariaceae), Claytonia parviflora var. utahensis (Montiaceae), Argemone parva and Eschscholzia californica var. mexicana (Papaveraceae), and Aquilegia micrantha var. loriae and Ranunculus adoneus var. caespitosus (Ranunculaceae). Second-step lectotypifications are provided for Talinum confertiflorum and Talinum pygmaeum (Montiaceae) and Platystemon termini (Papaveraceae).

A lectotype for the nameMentzelia multiflora var.integra is selected and a new combination inMentzelia (Loasaceae) is made. A key to the varieties ofMentzelia marginata is included.

Lectotypes are selected for 10 names inHypericum (Clusiaceae),Elatine (Elatinaceae),Arctostaphylos andVaccinium (Ericaceae),Androsace (Primulaceae), andViola (Violaceae).

Primula domensis Kass & S. L. Welsh,P. maguirei L. O. Williams, andP. nevadensis N. H. Holmgren are reduced to varietal status underP. cusickiana (A. Gray) A. Gray.

Two Nevada species are described here for the first time: Penstemon tiehmii N. H. Holmgren, which is endemic to Mount Lewis of the Shoshone Range in Lander County; and Penstemon rhizomatosus N. H. Holmgren, which is endemic to the central Schell Creek Range in White Pine County. They both belong to section Saccanthera and are closely related to P. kingii S. Watson, a Great Basin endemic of valley sagebrush habitats. Both new species are talus plants of higher elevations and differ from P. kingii principally in their rhizomatous habit, petiolate leaves, and pubescence of shorter hairs.

The new variety,Dodecatheon dentatum var.utahense, represents a geographic stepping stone betweenD. dentatum var.dentatum of the Pacific Northwest andD. dentatum var.ellisiae of the Southwest. Rationale for using the infraspecific rank of variety includes historical precedence and preponderant usage, convenience of grouping multiple varieties into subspecies, and elimination of subjectivity in grading the magnitude of genetic differences.

Combinations are made forKeckiella antirrhinoides var.microphylla, K. rothrockii var.jacintensis, K. ternata var.septentrionalis, Penstemon fruticiformis var.amargosae, P. grinnellii var.scrophularioides, P. heterodoxus var.cephalophorus, P. heterodoxus var.shastensis, andP. newberryi var.berryi.

Viola lithion andV. franksmithii are rock-dwelling endemics that belong to the North American perennial, caulescent, simple-leaved, blue-, purple-, or white-flowered group of species.Viola lithion, from the White Pine and Pilot mountain ranges of eastern Nevada and adjacent Utah, belongs to sectionChamaemelanium subsectionCanadenses. It most closely resembles the reniform-leaved, Olympic MountainV. flettii, together with which it possibly shares an ancestry with the widespread and allopatricV. canadensis. Viola franksmithii, restricted to the Logan Canyon drainage of the Bear River Range in northern Utah, belongs to sectionRostellatae subsectionRosulantes. It comes closest morphologically toV. howellii of the Coast Range, but likely evolved from the widespreadV. adunca or a common ancestor.

Penstemon distans, belonging to sect.Cristati (Rydb.) Pennell and known only from the southeastern edge of the Shivwits Plateau, Mohave Co., Arizona, is described, illustrated and discussed.

Penstemon goodrichii of sect.Cristati andP. navajoa andP. moriahensis of sect.Glabri are described, illustrated and mapped. Their relationships to kindred species are discussed.

Fifteen new combinations and one new binomial inPenstemon, to be used in a floristic treatment of the genus in theIntermountain Flora, are published herewith.

Asclepias welshii, restricted to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes of southern Utah, is described and illustrated. Its relationship to other species of seriesRoseae is discussed.

A new species ofLomatium belonging to theCynomarathrum group is described and its relationships to other species in the group are indicated.Lomatium junceum appears to be restricted to Emery Co., Utah, on barren clay and shale slopes in the San Rafael Swell and adjacent eastern base of the Wasatch Plateau.

A new variety from the eastern Great Basin of western U.S.A.,Glossopetalon spinescens var.microphyllum (Crossosomataceae), is described and illustrated, and its relationship within the species is indicated by a key. The nameGlossopetalon A. Gray is used rather than the substituteForsellesia Greene, because there is little chance of confusion with the earlier nameGlossopetalum Schreber, which was illegitimately published and remains obscure.
