The correct and precise crystal forms and the crystallographic orientation relationships (CORs) of ten main magnetite needle groups in the plagioclase host were unequivocally determined by transmission electron microscopy from >100 selected magnetite needles with well defined shape orientations in petrographic thin sections of a gabbro core sample drilled from the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge. The as‐observed CORs of magnetite in plagioclase are in accordance with the optimal matching in the oxygen sublattices of the two structures via the close alignment between two sets of close‐packed (c.p.) oxygen arrays parallel to {111}m in magnetite (m) and two sets of quasi‐c.p. oxygen arrays parallel to (150)p, (150)p, (112)p, (312)p, (021)p or (121)p in plagioclase (p), as demonstrated for the first time in the accumulated oxygen number versus normal distance [from the (hkl) plane] plots. Such a simple oxygen sublattice matching principle does not rely on the length matching for the specific pair of lattice directions or on the d‐spacing matching for the specific pair of lattice planes of the two structures, and therefore must be generally applicable for any mineral/oxide inclusions with a c.p. or quasi‐c.p. oxygen sublattice formed via precipitation in open or closed systems. The topotaxial nuclei then undergo extended growth along the kinetically fast growth direction of the two structures with the most similar oxygen distribution patterns, i.e. along the normal direction of the aligned pair of oxygen arrays, thereby yielding the pronounced shape orientations such as magnetite needles in plagioclase. The mineralogy of atmospheric silicate dust controls its interaction with clouds. K-feldspar has a remarkably high ice-nucleating activity, and its distribution may have influenced the global climate throughout Earth's history. However, long-term archives of past atmospheric feldspar are not known. Here, we investigate feldspar mineralogy, content, and grain size in pelagic clay cores. Sediments around Minamitorishima Island contain > 10 wt% of K-feldspar before ~ 35 Ma, which is five times more than the younger sediments. This distribution does not resemble other volcanic minerals or geochemically estimated volcanic input, suggesting that the K-feldspars are not associated with volcanic ash. The K-feldspars are present as isolated grains as well as pseudorhombohedral microcrystals indicative of authigenic overgrowth. On the other hand, they contain some Na, arguing against a purely authigenic origin. Grain size distributions of chemically separated quartz and feldspars show stratigraphic variation analogous to other North Pacific sites, further suggesting a link to eolian materials. Sediments from a South Pacific site also show K-feldspar enrichment over plagioclase before ~ 44 Ma, although the content relative to bulk sediment does not change much. Pumice rafts that arrived at the Nansei Islands, Japan, provided a unique opportunity to investigate the Fukutoku‐Oka‐no‐Ba (FOB) eruption of August 2021. Despite drifting for 2 months for ~1300 km, the drift pumice raft had a large volume and contained a variety of pumice clasts, some of which were deposited during a high tide in a typhoon, while others were washed up on a sandy beach. Most of the drift pumice clasts are gray in color, vesicular, and have a groundmass containing black enclaves. Rare black pumice and the main gray pumice components have similar trachytic compositions, with SiO2 = 61–62 mass% and total alkalis = 8.6–10 mass% (on an anhydrous basis). Both pumice types contain clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and rare olivine phenocrysts. Thin‐section observations show that the gray pumice has more elongated vesicles as compared with the black pumice that has spherical vesicles, even where the two types of pumice are in the same clast. The glass in the black pumice is transparent and brown in color, while that in the gray pumice is colorless. No micro or nano‐crystals were observed during electron and optical microscopy. Raman spectra of the brown‐colored glass exhibit a clear magnetite peak, suggesting magnetite nanolites cause the brown color. High‐Mg olivine in the black pumice has an equilibrium temperature of c. 1200 °C and a rim diffusion profile indicative of re‐equilibration with the surrounding melt over a period of hours to days. The textural relationships between the gray and black pumice suggest that the black pumice had become black and viscous before the two types of pumice mixed. Therefore, crystallization of magnetite nanolites and a corresponding increase in melt viscosity were important in the eruption preparation process, which then resulted in a large‐scale Plinian eruption. We present paleomagnetic secular variation and paleointensity from the Early Permian Tarim large igneous province, NW China. The studied sections comprise a total of ~400 m of basaltic flows. Paleomagnetic directions were determined for 11 flows. Four successive flows with a cumulative thickness of ~150 m showed a statistically identical paleomagnetic direction. Assuming a paleosecular variation speed similar to that of the present day, the ~150-m-thick basalt was estimated to have erupted within the past few centuries. Paleointensity experiments were performed on both whole-rock and single plagioclase samples. Although alterations during the experiment and/or weak remanence degraded the data quality, the flows with the same paleomagnetic direction revealed similar paleointensity estimates, supporting the hypothesis that the eruption of these flows was rapid. More generally, flows from the Lower Kupukuziman Formation seem to record lower paleointensity compared to flows from the overlying Kaipaizileike Formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
