Although the Water Framework Directive specifies that macrophytes and phytobenthos should be used for the ecological assessment of lakes and rivers, practice varies widely throughout the EU. Most countries have separate methods for macrophytes and phytobenthos in rivers; however, the situation is very different for lakes. Here, 16 countries do not have dedicated phytobenthos methods, some include filamentous algae within macrophyte survey methods whilst others use diatoms as proxies for phytobenthos. The most widely-cited justification for not having a dedicated phytobenthos method is redundancy, i.e. that macrophyte and phytoplankton assessments alone are sufficient to detect nutrient impacts. Evidence from those European Union Member States that have dedicated phytobenthos methods supports this for high level overviews of lake condition and classification; however, there are a number of situations where phytobenthos may contribute valuable information for the management of lakes., (Copyright © 2016 The Authors. This paper introduces and summarises the main outcomes of the 19th workshop of the International Association for Phytoplankton Taxonomy and Ecology held in Tiszafüred, Hungary, Tisza Balneum Hotel, from 23 to 30 September 2022. The selected theme of the workshop was "Trait-Based Approaches in Micro-Algal Ecology". The discussions presented during the workshop sessions resulted in the 18 articles contained in this Special Issue. There are 6 main thematic aspects developed by the participants: 1. Shape and size: are these traits easy to measure? 2. Spatial scales: when and where to look for microalgae? 3. Climate and extremes of ecological gradients: hot topics of this century. 4. Metaphyton and metaphytic habitats: life beyond plankton and benthos. 5. Microalgae in water management: phycology in practice. 6. Traditional and new methods: perspectives and comments. Trait-based approaches in microalgae ecology, although requiring further investigation and methodological development, represent a valid tool for refining the analysis of environmental variability in aquatic ecosystems. The papers presented in this Special Issue demonstrate that these approaches are extremely useful not only in the study of planktic algae but constitute a thoughtful method for the analysis of benthic and metaphytic microalgae in a wide variety of aquatic ecosystems. Using the electron microscopy, 435 diatom algae from 78 genera of 14 different types of tundra water bodies located in the vicinity of the Lena Delta Wildlife Reserve, north of the Arctic Circle, on the north-facing slope of the Primorsky Ridge (the eastern spur of the Kharaulakh Range of the Verkhoyansk mountain system) were revealed. Among them, 24 taxa of the species rank and 1 taxon of the generic rank are new to the flora of Russia. Most of these species are characteristic of oligotrophic water bodies and watercourses in Europe. Sixty-six of the identified species belonging to 28 genera have been identified to the genus level; most of them belong to the genera Planothidium (7) and Gomphonema (10). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied three commonly used bioindicator groups: phytoplankton, phytobenthos and benthic invertebrate communities’ structure patterns in transitions between lotic and lentic habitats as consequences of two consecutive large dams constructed in the early twentieth century on the intermediate reach of a lowland river in Normandy (NW, France), the Selune. According to sampling station position along the river, including two in the two reservoir lakes, we defined three sorts of transitions, from upstream to downstream: lentic to lotic transition (hereafter len-lot), lentic to lentic transition (hereafter len-len), within the two reservoir lakes, and lentic to lotic transition (hereafter len-lot).Lot-len transition, imposed by damming, and the recovery of lotic character of the river afterward dams, promoted different diversity patterns for the studied organisms’ groups. Phytobenthos’ α diversity significantly incresed in the len-lot transition, and the highest β diversity score was observed in the lot-len. Both, habitat conditions and spatial controls drove phytobenthos community structure. Benthic invertebrate community was mainly shaped by habitat conditions. Invertebrate’s α diversity significantly changed in the lot-len and len-lot transitions, with the β diversity score being the highest in the lot-len transition. Community’s traits composition of invertebrates best fitted predictions on lotic- and lentic- type communities. Phytoplankton’s α diversity remained unchanged in the transitions and subsequently β diversity scores were low.According to the results, we proposed three classes of organisms based on their response to river damming: i) organisms indifferent or tolerant to dams effect, like phytoplankton communities in this study, that were neither hampered by changes in water flow velocity, and did not display dispersal limitation neither; ii) organisms sensitive to habitat conditions shift but not limited in their dispersal capacity by the dam, like benthic invertebrates and phytobenthos in this study. Benthic invertebrate community and phytobenthos communities differed in their response likely due to their differential dispersal capabilities and niche breadth; iii) organisms limited in their dispersal by the dam, not represented in this study.Riverine organisms best tracked transitions, while β diversity assessment revealed as the most useful metric to disentangle the relative contribution of dispersal limitation or habitat modification provoked by multiple dams.

Since 2000, after the Water Framework Directive came into force, aquatic ecosystems' bioassessment has acquired immense practical importance for water management. Currently, due to extensive scientific research and monitoring, we have gathered comprehensive hydrobiological databases. The amount of available data increases with each subsequent year of monitoring, and the efficient analysis of these data requires the use of proper mathematical tools. Our study challenges the comparison of the modelling potential between four indices for the ecological status assessment of lakes based on three groups of aquatic organisms, i.e. phytoplankton, phytobenthos and macrophytes. One of the deep learning techniques, artificial neural networks, has been used to predict values of four biological indices based on the limited set of the physicochemical parameters of water. All analyses were conducted separately for lakes with various stratification regimes as they function differently. The best modelling quality in terms of high values of coefficients of determination and low values of the normalised root mean square error was obtained for chlorophyll a followed by phytoplankton multimetric. A lower degree of fit was obtained in the networks for macrophyte index, and the poorest model quality was obtained for phytobenthos index. For all indices, modelling quality for non-stratified lakes was higher than this for stratified lakes, giving a higher percentage of variance explained by the networks and lower values of errors. Sensitivity analysis showed that among physicochemical parameters, water transparency (Secchi disk reading) exhibits the strongest relationship with the ecological status of lakes derived by phytoplankton and macrophytes. At the same time, all input variables indicated a negligible impact on phytobenthos index. Human activities, increasing precipitation, and changes in land run-off deliver a large input of allochthonous nutrients into coastal waters including terrigenous dissolved organic matter (tDOM). Increased subsidies of tDOM into the coastal water are expected to reduce light availability and thus might be one of the factors causing coastal ocean darkening. To investigate the effect of increased tDOM input and thus limitation in light availability on primary production as well as the transfer to higher trophic levels (zooplankton), we conducted a large-scale indoor mesocosm “Planktotrons” experiment with natural (pelagic and benthic) plankton communities from the North Sea. We simulated a coastal ocean system with daily light and tidal cycles for 35 days. The experimental treatments included a light gradient consisting of three levels of tDOM addition (i.e., low tDOM, medium tDOM, and high tDOM) and a control without tDOM addition. Results showed that tDOM addition reduced the light availability by 27% (low tDOM addition), 62% (medium tDOM addition) and 86% (high tDOM addition). On the basis of our own and published data, the contribution of autotrophic communities to the total primary production in the ecosystem of the Rybinsk Reservoir was estimated during the vegetation season in 2009. The contributions were as follows: 390 198 t C for phytoplankton, 6100 t C for epiphyton, 115 550 t C for macrophytes, and 1491 t C for phytobenthos. Higher aquatic plants constituted 74.4% of the total primary production in the littoral zone of the reservoir, which occupies 4.1% of the reservoir area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To test if phytobenthic algae provide additional important information to macrophytes and phytoplankton for lake monitoring, we sampled two large lakes in Norway. In each lake, we analyzed water chemistry and phytoplankton above the deepest site, recorded macrophytes and non-diatom phytobenthic algae at 20 sites around the shoreline and estimated site-specific nutrient input from land cover. Since no ready-to-use phytobenthos index exists for lakes in Norway, we tested the PIT index developed for rivers, commonly perceived signs of disturbance such as high algal cover, and taxon richness as well as similarity patterns. Both lakes were nutrient poor, but had potential local nutrient inputs (villages, agriculture). In neither of the lakes did phytobenthos indicate a worse overall ecological status than macrophytes and phytoplankton. Our data therefore, did not suggest that it would be useful to add phytobenthos into surveillance monitoring of lakes in Norway. There was a loose correlation between macrophyte and phytobenthic site-specific taxon richness and similarities. This means that macrophytes and phytobenthos do indeed give partly redundant information. High algal cover was found at sites with both high and low phosphorus input. Using algal cover as indicator of site-specific nutrient input is therefore overly simplistic. Urban and cultivated areas were associated with a more eutrophic PIT. The aim of this work is to simulate the dissolved oxygen deficiency in the coastal zone that sometimes occurs during the summer water stagnation. We consider the main components of the marine ecosystem that play a major role in such processes—concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur compounds in water, dissolved and particular organic matter, oxygen, biomass of phytoplankton and macroalgae. We use the object-based modeling technique to simulate the spatio-temporal variability of the ecosystem in a 2D domain. In comparison with the traditional approach, it gives several advantages: more precise parametrizations of the biological components’ functionality; higher spatial resolution; possibility to account for the individual variability of hydrobionts; easy inclusion of an arbitrary number of species in the model. Our model included three species of phytoplankton and seven macroalgae. Individual-based modules control their functionality. Species of phytoplankton and seaweeds chosen for simulations are typical for the coastal zone of Crimea. In the simulations, we study the contribution of micro- and macroalgae to the processes of self-purification of a semi-enclosed basin in case of a sharp increase in nutrient concentration in water.

Two methods of quantifying diatoms were compared: (i) by counting valves, and (ii) by simple assignment of individual species to a seven-point scale according to their coverage on a glass slide. The saprobity-trophic index introduced in the Czech Republic for assessing the ecological status of running waters in accordance with the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) was used for comparison. There were no statistically significant differences between the indices as calculated by the studied methods, and therefore the comparable indicative values of the two approaches were demonstrated. In all cases, however, indices based on coverage classes achieved higher correlation with the fundamental water chemistry parameters than did indices based on diatom valve counts. To explain the cause of higher correlations, different variants of editing input data were used. The results support the assumption that the main cause of the poorer predictive value for the index based on diatom valve counts is that the abundant taxa are attributed too much importance in the final assessment of the environment quality. Using degrees of coverage for the quantification of diatoms in evaluating the ecological status thus appears to be preferable (or at least sufficient) for the given purpose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wetlands, especially marshes, support many services such as carbon catchment control or water purification led by primary producers such as phytoplankton and microphytobenthos (PB). The impact of the sedimentary compartment, as source and sink of essential nutrients for the water column, is often neglected in the study of their dynamics and water purification capacity of the systems. This work compared monthly (between February 2020 and April 2021) the benthic and pelagic primary producers' dynamics in two anthropised freshwater marshes (Marans and Genouillé), with the simultaneous follow-up of physico-chemical parameters of the water column and nutrient fluxes at the sediment-water (SWI) interface. It was suggested a strong contribution of phytoplankton (pumping) and the benthic compartment (denitrification) to the water purification of these two nitrates (NO 3 −)-rich marshes. Total phytoplankton production fluctuated between ∼5 (winter) and 1500 mg C m−3 d−1 (fall) at Marans and between 40 (winter) and ∼750 mg C m−3 d−1 (spring) at Genouillé. At Marans, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) benthic effluxes (-2.101 to -6.102 µmol m−2 d−1 in fall and summer, respectively) coincided with phytoplankton bloom periods. These effluxes were inhibited by NO 3 − penetration in the sediment (0 to 5.104 µmol m−2 d−1), by inhibiting iron respiration. At Genouillé, inhibition of SRP effluxes depended on denitrification rate and on P stocks in the sediment, where slight SRP effluxes (-101 µmol m−2 d−1) could have co-occurred with slight NO 3 − influxes (5.102 µmol m−2 d−1) in spring. The presence of PB (between 10–60 and 40–120 mg g sed −1 at Marans and Genouillé, respectively), suggested a strong contribution of the benthic compartment to the total primary production (benthic and pelagic through resuspension processes) in these environments. This work encourages to consider the benthos and the pelagos as a unicum to provide better sustainable management of such systems and limit eutrophication risks in coastal areas. The present paper aims to characterize the algal communities from Balta Mică a Brăilei Nature Park in terms of their species richness and their ability to reflect the water quality of the aquatic ecosystems they live in. Thirteen shallow floodplain lakes, both permanent and temporary, were considered for the present study, with 16 sampling occasions in 2012 and 2013. More than 300 algal taxa were identified, with the green algae (Chlorophyta) being the dominant phyla in almost all the sampling sites. The trophicity and the organic pollution reached high values in 2012, probably due to low water levels caused by drought. Spring floods from 2013 led to lower trophicity and saprobity levels in all sampled water pools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aquatic invasive species are a major threat to native freshwater ecosystems and cause enormous ecological and economic damage worldwide. Didymosphenia geminata (Lyngbye) M. Schmidt is an emerging invasive aquatic species that is spreading aggressively in Southern South America. Using niche analysis and species distribution models (SDMs), we examined niche requirements of D. geminata using climatic, topographic, and biological variables. We compared the realized niche of the species in the United States (US) with the niche in Chile. Within Chile, we also examined the environmental conditions (environmental envelopes) of rivers with and without this alga, to assess whether this species has the potential to colonize more rivers. Finally, we compared the SDMs from the US and Chile projected to Chile. Results showed that the potential distribution of D. geminata varied significantly between US and Chile. The US-based model predicted a geographic distribution in Chile which ranged from 32° to 55° S latitude while the Chile-based model predicted suitable habitats only from 36° to 48° S, and not so in the coastal ranges nor in Southern Patagonia (~ 52-55°S). In Chile, we found no differences in the environmental envelopes of the invaded and uninvaded rivers, thus suggesting that this species has even more suitable habitats to invade. These results can be used for prioritizing survey sites in Southern Chile for an early detection and management of D. geminata and for the conservation of native flora and fauna in freshwater ecosystems in Chile. The European Union's Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires that all water bodies in Europe achieve good ecological status (GES) by 2015. We developed an ecological classification tool for UK lakes based on benthic diatoms, a key component of the biological-quality element macrophytes and phytobenthos. A database of 1079 epilithic and epiphytic diatom samples and matching environmental data was assembled from 228 UK lakes. The data set was divided into 3 lake types: low, medium, and high alkalinity. A lake trophic diatom index (LTDI) was developed based on modification of the trophic diatom index (TDI) for rivers, and ecological quality ratios (EQRs) were generated for each lake type. The high/good status boundary was defined as the 25th percentile of EQRs of all reference sites (identified based on independent sedimentary-diatomassemblage data or catchment point-source and landuse data), whereas the good/moderate boundary was set at the point at which nutrient-sensitive and nutrient-tolerant taxa were present in equal relative abundance. The moderate/poor and poor/bad boundaries were defined by equal division of the remaining EQR gradient. Samples from reference sites were used to predict the expected LTDI value for each sample, and these values were compared with the classifications derived from the LTDI. For lakes identified as reference sites, 68% were classified as having high status and 32% as having good. The model predicted 81% of nonreference lakes to have good or worse status. The model was applied to 17 English lakes (10 low- and 7 medium-alkalinity) for which classification based on other WFD tools was available. The classifications based on LTDI gave the same status (within 1 class) as other biological elements for 11 of the 17 lakes (65%). Thus, the LTDI gives a reliable assessment of the condition of the littoral biofilm and is a key component of a WFD-compliant tool kit for classifying UK standing waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate warming has been linked to an apparent general decrease in body sizes of ectotherms, both across and within taxa, especially in aquatic systems. Smaller body size in warmer geographical regions has also been widely observed. Since body size is a fundamental determinant of many biological attributes, climate-warming-related changes in size could ripple across multiple levels of ecological organization. Some recent studies have questioned the ubiquity of temperature-size rules, however, and certain widespread and abundant taxa, such as diatoms, may be important exceptions. We tested the hypothesis that diatoms are smaller at warmer temperatures using a system of geothermally heated streams. There was no consistent relationship between size and temperature at either the population or community level. These field data provide important counterexamples to both James' and Bergmann's temperature-size rules, respectively, undermining the widely held assumption that warming favours the small. This study provides compelling new evidence that diatoms are an important exception to temperature-size rules for three reasons: (i) we use many more species than prior work; (ii) we examine both community and species levels of organization simultaneously; (iii) we work in a natural system with a wide temperature gradient but minimal variation in other factors, to achieve robust tests of hypotheses without relying on laboratory setups, which have limited realism. In addition, we show that interspecific effects were a bigger contributor to whole-community size differences, and are probably more ecologically important than more commonly studied intraspecific effects. Biological elements, including phytoplankton, phytobenthos, macrophytes, benthic invertebrates and fish, are employed by the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000/60/EC as ecological indicators for the assessment of surface waters. The use of primary producers (phytoplankton, phytobenthos and macrophytes) for water quality assessment has a long history, and several methods have been developed worldwide. In this study, we used these three communities to assess the ecological status of five natural lakes located in the Aquitaine region (southwest France). Several biological indices used in lakes from other European countries or in French rivers were employed and compared among the three communities. Each primary producer provided complementary information about the ecological status of the lakes, including the invasiveness of exotic taxa. Regardless of the producer community used, the response to the environment, as reflected by the indices (adequate for each community), was similar: Lakes Cazaux, Lacanau and Hourtin showed the best ecological status and Parentis and Soustons the worst. Phytoplankton diagnosis reflected and integrated unambiguously the water quality of the lakes, as demonstrated by the strong relationships between the phytoplankton index and the trophic status criteria. This community appeared as the best indicator, especially when macrophytes were absent. The methods applied here represent a potential tool for the assessment of the ecological status in the context of WFD, but they need to be refined. We propose modifications for phytobenthos index initially tailored for running waters for adequate use in lentic ecosystems. Abstract: The St. Lucia estuarine lake on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is one of the largest estuarine systems in Africa and of unique importance for the adjacent marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The area regularly experiences periods of drought, resulting in hypersaline conditions in its shallow lakes and the closure of the estuarine mouth. This study aimed to assess the primary production rates of phytoplankton and microphytobenthos throughout an annual cycle of this drought phase. Primary production rates were assessed at representative sites, namely the Mouth, Narrows, South and North Lakes from June 2006 to May 2007. Because of the drought, the salinity gradient from the mouth to the head of the estuary was reversed by comparison to estuarine systems with a steady freshwater inflow and regular marine exchange. In March 2007, during the study, the mouth opened as a result of rough seas, and the marine influence broke the existing reversed gradient, producing a marine salinity throughout the system. Microphytobenthic primary productivity varied between 0 and 34 mg C m−2 h−1 and showed strong correlations with salinity, DIN:DIP ratios and irradiance. Benthic productivity was high across the system after breaching of the mouth. Pelagic primary productivity (between 0 and 180 mg C m−2 h−1), showed a correlation with temperature and irradiance and was highest across the system in February 2007 when the mouth was still closed. There was no significant correlation between production rates and biomass (chl-a) in either the benthic or pelagic habitats. The negative correlation between DIN:DIP ratio and benthic primary productivity indicated that phosphorus was the limiting nutrient. This study shows that salinity, along with seasonally dependent parameters such as temperature and irradiance, correlates with the rate of microalgal production. Hence, in these shallow lakes, the largest primary productivity can occur in either the pelagic or benthic subsystems, depending on prevailing conditions at the time. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The depth-distribution of epilithic diatoms in a carbonate meromictic lake (south-eastern Alps), characterized by marked water-level fluctuations, was investigated. Fixed stations were placed along a depth-profile at intervals of 2-3 m and sampled throughout the year using scuba diving. Diatom analysis included quantification of living cells (biovolume calculations) and the estimation of fucoxanthin concentration, which, coupled with the analysis of digested material, permitted taxonomic determination at specific or subspecific level. Multivariate analyses indicated the following variables to be significant: water-level fluctuations, photosynthetically active radiation, silica and nitrates. Diatoms had distinct depth-distributions. Quantification of densities, biovolumes and Chl a, and physiological (senescence index, fucoxanthin), functional (photosynthetic efficiency), and community structure (diversity) parameters allowed the definition of three depth-distribution zones (shallow, mid-depth and deep). The different diatom communities in these zones were confirmed by ANOSIM (analysis of similarity). The shallow, mid-depth, and deep zone were characterized by disturbance due to water-level fluctuations, high stability with favourable growth conditions and severe light limitation, respectively. Community composition and diversity depth-distribution features remained relatively stable throughout the year, while marked changes in benthic diatom biovolumes were modulated by competition for light with phytoplankton. Fucoxanthin was strongly correlated with epilithic diatom biovolumes. The results indicate that depth-distribution patterns should be considered when performing lake diatom biodiversity inventories and integrity evaluations because water-level fluctuations are likely to increase in many lakes due to increased withdrawal of water and climate change in the future. According to the results, we proposed three classes of organisms based on their response to river damming: i) organisms indifferent or tolerant to dams effect, like phytoplankton communities in this study, that were neither hampered by changes in water flow velocity, and did not display dispersal limitation neither; ii) organisms sensitive to habitat conditions shift but not limited in their dispersal capacity by the dam, like benthic invertebrates and phytobenthos in this study. Benthic invertebrate community and phytobenthos communities differed in their response likely due to their differential dispersal capabilities and niche breadth; iii) organisms limited in their dispersal by the dam, not represented in this study. Riverine organisms best tracked transitions, while β diversity assessment revealed as the most useful metric to disentangle the relative contribution of dispersal limitation or habitat modification provoked by multiple dams. Research to develop tools to assess the ecological status of phytobenthos, as required in Annex V of the European Union Water Framework Directive, has focussed largely on diatoms. Diatoms are often the most abundant and diverse group of algae within the phytobenthos and have been used widely for other monitoring purposes. However, there is little empirical justification for the use of diatoms as proxies for the wider phytobenthos. In this paper, we re-examine an existing dataset compiled largely from littoral samples from standing waters in the English Lake District and compared transfer functions for total phosphorus, dissolved inorganic carbon, conductivity and calcium concentration generated from diatoms and non-diatoms separately and together. The results show that transfer functions generated from diatoms alone are as powerful as transfer functions generated from diatoms and non-diatoms combined, while transfer functions generated from non-diatoms alone are less effective. Abstract: The exposed coast on the tide-less south-eastern Baltic Sea is generally unsuitable for large perennial, habitat forming plants, such as eelgrass and bladder wrack. In this area the dominant perennial macrophyte, Furcellaria lumbricalis, provides an important substrate for the eggs of commercial fish. This algae is limited to the hard substrates and abundant at depths of 6–10m. However, the distribution of F. lumbricalis is patchy, probably due to the effects of exposure and abrasion from mobile sediments. It has been proposed that the extent of F. lumbricalis cover relates to substrate size and stability, sediment abrasion, depth and the direction of predominant stormy winds. A remote underwater video equipment was used to obtain records of distribution of these algae. Video footage was segmented into still images from where physical and biological parameters were obtained. F. lumbricalis occurred on cobbles, boulders, and occasionally on pebbles. Cover of algae was greater on boulders surrounded by a stable bottom (boulders) than surrounded by sands and gravels. Cover on cobbles was similar on all bottom types probably due to the movement of this substrate during storms. F. lumbricalis occurred close to the seabed on those substrates on stable bottoms where compared with mobile ones. However, elevation of algae from the seabed and cover patterns depended on depth. According to direction of wind exposure, cover on substrates was greater on sheltered surfaces in comparison to exposed ones, where the F. lumbricalis was dislodged during storms. The distribution of cover of F. lumbricalis may alter according to storm frequency as predicted to take place with changes in climate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

1. Spatial and temporal variations in algal concentrations are controlled in many aquatic ecosystems by the availability of solar irradiance, rather that nutrients or grazing. In such light limiting conditions, changes in the optical or hydrological characteristics of the water column will directly impact biomass concentrations. Here we develop and test an approach based on the relationship between available solar irradiance within the mixed layer and algal biomass concentrations. 2. As with most nutrient/biomass relationships, an increase in available solar energy favours an increase in biomass when light limitation prevails. The ratio between light/biomass is then used to determine a critical light requirement that can be used to estimate critical depth and compensation irradiance and open the way to exploring how changes in mixing depth and vertical attenuation may influence algal biomass concentrations. 3. This approach is used to describe real conditions in two disparate algal communities; the phytoplankton community in Lake Victoria, East Africa and the microphytobenthos community in the lacustrine system of Esteros del Iberá (South America). 4. Differences in the critical light requirement were used to examine the relative efficiency of the algal communities in their use of available solar energy. The tropical phytoplankton community showed similar energetic requirements to theoretical estimates and were found to be less efficient when compared with the phytobenthos community. Relationships between littoral surface-sediment diatom assemblages and ambient limnological conditions were examined in 186 lentic fresh waters throughout lower Belgium (Flanders). Most of these waters were small, unstratified, alkaline and rich in nutrients. Using weighted-averaging techniques, robust and accurate transfer functions were developed for median pH-values ranging from 3.4 to 9.3 and dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations from <1.6 to 63 mg l−1 (jackknifed r2≈ 0.87, RMSEP <10% of the observed range), while a less precise model was obtained for sodium (2–571 mg l−1; jackknifed r2 0.69, RMSEP 9.9% of the range). Restricting the data set to circumneutral and alkaline sites (pH≥6.5) revealed the importance of additional variables, including calcium, silica, chemical oxygen demand and potential gross oxygen production (a proxy for metabolic activity and phytoplankton abundance). Calibration models for these variables were strong enough to be useful (jackknifed r2 0.57–0.59, RMSEP 13.1–16.4% of the observed range), although estimations should not always be considered entirely independent. Except for the predominant pH gradient, removal of all taxa with a distribution unrelated to the variable of interest improved model performance. In general, such taxa were proportionally represented among taxa classified according to their principal habitat. Application of the present models to diatom assemblages of shallow-water sediments obtained from historical samples and, most importantly, herbarium-macrophyte specimens, will improve hindsight into regional freshwater conditions and add to base-line setting of ecological quality standards in a highly impacted region. The aim of this work is to simulate the dissolved oxygen deficiency in the coastal zone that sometimes occurs during the summer water stagnation. We consider the main components of the marine ecosystem that play a major role in such processes—concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur compounds in water, dissolved and particular organic matter, oxygen, biomass of phytoplankton and macroalgae. We use the object-based modeling technique to simulate the spatio-temporal variability of the ecosystem in a 2D domain. In comparison with the traditional approach, it gives several advantages: more precise parametrizations of the biological components' functionality; higher spatial resolution; possibility to account for the individual variability of hydrobionts; easy inclusion of an arbitrary number of species in the model. Our model included three species of phytoplankton and seven macroalgae. Individual-based modules control their functionality. Species of phytoplankton and seaweeds chosen for simulations are typical for the coastal zone of Crimea. In the simulations, we study the contribution of micro- and macroalgae to the processes of self-purification of a semi-enclosed basin in case of a sharp increase in nutrient concentration in water. The Guadalquivir estuary is a high‐nutrient load environment, yet it has a reduced primary production because the high suspended sediment concentration (SSC) causes light attenuation. High‐resolution observations revealed relationships between the SSC and Chlorophyll‐a (Chla) concentration from seasonal to intratidal time scales. Local maxima of time‐averaged Chla levels occurred at locations with relatively low SSC. In the upper (lower) part of the estuary, larger Chla concentrations were observed during the wet (dry) season. In contrast to longer time scales, SSC and Chla exhibited in‐phase oscillations during the spring‐neap cycle. Both SSC and Chla were found to peak at maximum ebb and flood. There was no positive correlation at certain apogean neap tides, and instead, Chla exhibited daily variations. An idealized model was developed, which mimicked and helped to explain SSC‐Chla relationships at different time scales. The model accounts for the vertical advection of Chla and SSC, tidal resuspension, radiation‐mediated growth, and effects of the change in stratification stemming from tides and SSC. The specific growth rate of the Chla biomass is inhibited due to high SSC throughout the year. The in‐phase relationship at spring‐neap and tidal scales seems to be due to resuspension of algal microorganisms attached to sediments. Daily variability of Chla during apogean neap tides emerges because tidal shear stress is low and the strong decline in the suspended particulate matter reduces the light attenuation. The light‐mediated growth of part of the biomass, still remaining in the upper layers of the water column, is then driven by the day‐night cycle. Plain Language Summary: Phytoplankton exist at the base of the aquatic food web. These microorganisms harvest light to produce oxygen and biomass through photosynthesis in the presence of nutrients. To elucidate their potential for producing biomass, it is important to understand how environmental conditions control phytoplankton growth. This knowledge is particularly relevant in reduced‐growth environments, such as the Guadalquivir estuary, which sustain high‐nutrient loads from the catchment. In this study, analyses of observations and idealized model experiments revealed the complex spatiotemporal variability of biomass induced by the joint action of tides, runoff, and radiation. The attenuation of light due to the high levels of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) hindered seasonal specific growth rates of biomass. However, SSC and Chlorophyll‐a (Chla) fluorescence, which is widely regarded as a measure of biomass content, did not always show an inverse relationship. Tidal resuspension caused SSC and Chla to peak at maximum ebb and flood. The large sinking velocities of Chla‐containing matter that ensued from the results analysis indicate that a substantial amount of biomass is composed of algal species that are attached to sediments. The results will allow a better understanding and evaluation of the biotic response of the estuary to future environmental changes.
