We have observed the Berry phase effect associated with interband coherence in topological surface states (TSSs) using two-color high-harmonic spectroscopy. This Berry phase accumulates along the evolution path of strong field-driven election-hole quasiparticles in electronic bands with strong spin-orbit coupling. By introducing a secondary weak field, we perturb the evolution of Dirac fermions in TSSs and thus provide access to the Berry phase. We observe a significant shift in the oscillation phase of the even-order harmonics from the spectral interferogram. We reveal that such a modulation feature is linked to the geometric phase acquired in the nonperturbative dynamics of TSSs. Furthermore, we show that the overwhelming Berry phase effect can significantly deform the quantum paths of electron-hole pairs, thus enhancing the ability to harness electron spin using lightwaves in quantum materials with strong spin-orbit interactions., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Coherent dispersive wave emission, as an important phenomenon of soliton dynamics, manifests itself in multiple platforms of nonlinear optics from fibre waveguides to integrated photonics. Limited by its resonance nature, efficient generation of coherent dispersive wave with ultra-broad bandwidth has, however, proved difficult to realize. Here, we unveil a new regime of soliton dynamics in which the dispersive wave emission process strongly couples with the splitting dynamics of the driving pulse. High-order dispersion and self-steepening effects, accumulated over soliton self-compression, break the system symmetry, giving rise to high-efficiency generation of coherent dispersive wave in the ultraviolet region. Simultaneously, asymmetric soliton splitting results in the appearance of a temporally-delayed ultrashort pulse with high intensity, overlapping and copropagating with the dispersive wave pulse. Intense cross-phase modulations lead to octave-wide broadening of the dispersive wave spectrum, covering 200 to 400 nm wavelengths. The highly-coherent, octave-wide ultraviolet spectrum, generated from the simple capillary fibre set-up, is in great demand for time-resolved spectroscopy, ultrafast electron microscopy and frequency metrology applications, and the critical role of the secondary pulse in this process reveals some new opportunities for all-optical control of versatile soliton dynamics.

We studied the underlying mechanism of broadband dispersive-wave emission within a resonance band of gas-filled anti-resonant hollow-core fiber. Both theoretical and experimental results unveiled that the high-order soliton, launched into the hollow-core fiber, experienced two stages of pulse compression, resulting in a multi-peak structure of the dispersive-wave spectrum. Over the first-stage pulse compression, a sharp increase of the pulse peak power triggered the first time of dispersion-wave emission, and simultaneously caused ionization of the noble gas filled in the fiber core. Strong soliton-plasma interactions led to blue shifting of the pump pulse, and the blue-shifted pulse experienced a decreasing dispersion value in the fiber waveguide, resulting in an increase of its soliton order. Then, the second-stage pulse compression due to the high-order soliton effect triggered the second time of dispersive-wave emission at a phase-matched frequency slightly lower than that in the first stage. Multi-peak spectra of the output dispersive-waves and their formation dynamics were clearly observed in our experiments, which can be understood using a delicate coupling mechanism among three nonlinear effects including high-order-soliton compression, soliton-plasma interaction and phase-matched dispersive-wave emission. The output broadband dispersive-wave could be potentially compressed to sub-30 fs duration using precise chirp-compensation technique.

We proposed a novel method, using an asymmetric four grating compressor (AFGC) to improve the spatial uniformity of laser beams, to suppress the small-scale self-focusing (SSSF) during the post-compression of ultrahigh peak power lasers. The spatial uniformity is an important factor in performing post-compression, due to the spatial intensity nonuniformity will be enhanced while going through a nonlinear process. And what's more, the strong intensity spikes induced during nonlinear process can seriously damage the subsequent optical components. Moreover, the three-dimensional numerical simulations of the post-compression are implemented based on a petawatt (PW) class laser with a standard compressor and an AFGC. The results show that the post-compression with AFGC can shorten the laser pulses from 30fs to sub-10fs and meanwhile efficiently suppress SSSF. This work provides a promising scheme for the post-compression scaling to PW and even 10PW lasers.

Pulse self-compression is a simple and economical method for improving the peak power of ultra-intense laser pulses. By solving a modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation considering the fifth-order susceptibility, we found that self-compression appeared even in normally dispersive medium owing to the negative fifth-order susceptibility inducing a mass of negative frequency chirp. Furthermore, negatively pre-chirped pulses allow for self-compression at lower intensity, avoiding medium damage. We numerically analyze the optimal choice of pre-chirp, input intensity, and medium length. A proof-of-principle experiment successfully proves the above theoretical findings. It is expected that petawatt or even exawatt laser pulses with 25 fs/15 fs transform limited pulse duration can be self-compressed to about 9.9 fs/7.6 fs in normally dispersive medium, such as fused silica glass plate., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

Accelerating a free electron to high energy forms the basis for studying particle and nuclear physics. Here it is shown that wavefunction of such an energetic electron can be further manipulated with femtosecond intense lasers. During the scattering between a high-energy electron and a strong laser pulse, we find a regime where the enormous photon spin angular momenta can be efficiently transferred to the electron orbital angular momentum (OAM). The wavefunction of the scattered electron is twisted from its initial plane-wave state to quantum vortex state. Nonlinear quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory suggests that GeV-level electrons acquire average intrinsic OAM beyond 100 h-barat laser intensities of 10^20W/cm^2 with linear scaling. These electrons emit gamma photons with double-peaked spectrum, which sets them apart from ordinary electrons. The findings demonstrate a proficient method for generating relativistic leptons with quantum vortex wavefunctions based on existing laser technology, thereby fostering a novel source for particle and nuclear physics.

High-energy ultraviolet pulse generation in gas-filled hollow capillary fibers (HCFs) through dispersive-wave-emission process, has attracted considerable attentions in recent several years due to its great application potentials in ultraviolet spectroscopy and photochemistry. While the ability of this technique to deliver high-energy, ultrafast ultraviolet pulses is widely recognized, few-fs duration of {\mu}J-level dispersive-wave (DW) pulses has, however, escaped direct measurements. In this letter, we demonstrate that using several chirped mirrors, few-fs ultraviolet DW pulses can be obtained in atmosphere environment without the use of vacuum chambers. The pulse temporal profiles, measured using a self-diffraction frequency-resolved optical gating set-up, exhibit full-width-half-maximum pulse widths of 9.6 fs at 384 nm and 9.4 fs at 430 nm, close to the Fourier-transform limits. Moreover, theoretical and experimental studies reveal the strong influences of driving pulse energy and HCF length on temporal width and shape of the measured DW pulses. The ultraviolet pulses obtained in atmosphere environment with {\mu}J-level pulse energy, few-fs pulse width and broadband wavelength tunability are ready to be used in many applications.

Sub-femtosecond x-ray burst is powerful tool for probing and imaging electronic and concomitant atomic motion in attosecond physics. For years, x-ray source (above 2 keV) had mainly been obtained from X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) or synchrotron radiation, which are high energy consumption, high cost and huge volume. Here we propose a low-cost and small-size method to generate X-ray source. We experimentally obtained high photon energy spectrum (~ 5.2 keV) through both atom and multiple valence state ions using a near-infrared 1.45 {\mu}m driving laser interacting with krypton gas, according to our knowledge, which is the highest photon energy generated through high-order harmonic generation up to now. In our scheme, multi-keV photon energy can be achieved with a relaxed requirement on experimental conditions, and make time-resolved studies more accessible to many laboratories that are capable of producing high energy photon extending to hard x-ray region. Spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV) is a unique optical vortex with phase singularity in the space-time domain and the photons in a STOV can carry transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM). The STOV shows many fantastic properties which are worth exploring. Here, we theoretically and experimentally study the diffraction property of STOV, which is a fundamental wave phenomenon. The diffraction behaviors of STOVs are obviously affected by the transverse OAM. The diffraction patterns of STOV pulses diffracted by a grating show multi-lobe structure with each gap corresponding to 1 topological charge. The diffraction properties of lights with transverse OAM are demonstrated clearly and help us understanding the physical properties of STOV, which will be of special applications, such as the realization of fast detection of STOVs with different topological charges, which may pay the way for STOV based optical communication., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

A multistage smoothing multistep pulse compressor (MPC) based on a single-pass single-grating-pair (SSGP) main compressor is proposed to simplify the entire petawatt (PW) compressor. Only one grating pair with relatively long distance is used to generate the same amount of spectral dispersion in the main compressor compared with a four-grating main compressor. As the SSGP induces the largest spatial dispersion, it can introduce the best beam-smoothing effect to the laser beam on the last grating. When considering the diffraction loss of only two gratings, the total compression efficiency of the SSGP main compressor is even larger than that of a four-grating main compressor. Furthermore, the spatiotemporal aberration induced by single-grating-pair can be compensated effectively by using deformable mirrors, however it is difficult or complicated to be well compensated in a four-grating compressor. Ultrahigh peak power lasers are important scientific tools for frontier laser-physics researches, in which both the peak power improvement and operating safety are very important meanwhile limited by the damage threshold and size of compression gratings currently. Based on a recent reported method "multistep pulse compressor (MPC)", a multistage smoothing based MPC (MS-MPC) is proposed here to further improve the running safety, operating convenience, and simplify the whole setup of the MPC. In this optimized design, the beam smoothing is not simply executed in the pre-compressor or main-compressor, but separated into multistage. Then, it can protect important optics in every stage directly and reduce the executing difficult of typical MPC at the same time. The prism pair based pre-compressor will induce suitable spatial dispersion which is easier to be achieved and enough to protect the first grating directly. At the same time, the asymmetric four-grating compressor (AFGC) will also induce spatial dispersion to further smooth the laser beam which helps to protect the last grating directly. In this way, 10s-100s PW lasers can be compressed by using current available optics with improved operating safety owing to remove random spatial intensity modulations. Furthermore, an additional beam smoothing stage can be added before the main amplifier to protect the biggest amplification crystal away from damage. This MS-MPC optical design can be easily extended to be used in all exist PW laser facilities to improve their potential compressed pulse energy and running safety., Comment: 15pages, 7 figures

In this work using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and analytical considerations we demonstrate intense high-order plasma surface harmonics carrying a time-varying orbital angular momentum (OAM) -- the self-torque. We show that by using two laser beams with different OAMs $l_1$ and $l_2$ and a certain delay between each other and shooting them obliquely on an overdense plasma target, one can generate harmonics with OAM spanning $nl_1$ to $nl_2$, where $n$ is the order of the harmonic. Optical sectioning technology has been widely used in various fluorescence microscopes owing to its background removing capability. Here, a virtual HiLo based on edge detection (V-HiLo-ED) is proposed to achieve wide-field optical sectioning, which requires only single wide-field image. Compared with conventional optical sectioning technologies, its imaging speed can be increased by at least twice, meanwhile maintaining nice optical sectioning performance, low cost, and excellent artifact suppression capabilities. Furthermore, the new V-HiLo-ED can also be extended to other non-fluorescence imaging fields. Increasing any degree of freedom of light beam may open a wide application area of this special light beam. Vortex beam with a dimension of orbital angular momentum (OAM) as a useful light source has been widely applied in many fields. Here, unique multicolor concentric ultrafast vortex beams (MUCU-VBs), which are also named ultrafast photonic rainbow, with controllable orbital angular momentum are firstly generated using cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) in an yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) plate. Up to 9 multicolor concentric annular ultrafast vortex sidebands are generated simultaneously. The topological charges of the sidebands, which are controllable by changing the topological charges of the two input pump beams, are measured and in according with the theoretical analysis very well. The novel MUCU-VBs can be manipulated simultaneously in temporal, spatial, spectral domains and OAM state, which open more than one new degree of freedoms of vortex light beam and will be of wide and special applications, such as multicolor pump-probe experiments, simultaneous microparticle manipulation and exploring, and optical communication. The peak power improvement and running safety of petawatt (PW) lasers are limited by laser-induced damage of optical components with limited sizes and damage thresholds. Diffraction gratings in pulse compressors have been the shortest stave of PW lasers up to now, as to manufacture a high quality meter-sized grating remains particularly challenging. Here, the asymmetric four-grating compressor (AFGC) with asymmetric configuration is proposed for PW lasers to increase the maximum bearable output pulse energy and running safety without neither additional optical component nor extra control in comparison to a traditional Treacy four-grating compressor (TFGC) with symmetric configuration. In AFGC, suitable spatial dispersion can be introduced in the output laser beam which is able to decrease the laser spatial intensity modulation (LSIM) of the output beam on the final grating. The introduced spatial dispersion can be automatically compensated at the focal plane by using the spatiotemporal focusing technique. Based on this simple AFGC design, not only the damage risk of the final grating can be reduced, but also the maximum output pulse energy can be improved by about 1.8 times theoretically. High-energy tens (10s) to hundreds (100s) petawatt (PW) lasers are key tools for exploring frontier fundamental researches such as strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED), and the generation of positron-electron pair from vacuum. Recently, pulse compressor became the main obstacle on achieving higher peak power due to the limitation of damage threshold and size of diffraction gratings. Here, we propose a feasible multistep pulse compressor (MPC) to increase the maximum bearable input and output pulse energies through modifying their spatiotemporal properties. Typically, the new MPC including a prism pair for pre-compression, a four-grating compressor (FGC) for main compression, and a spatiotemporal focusing based self-compressor for post-compression. The prism pair can induce spatial dispersion to smooth and enlarge the laser beam, which increase the maximum input and output pulse energies. As a result, as high as 100 PW laser with single beam or more than 150 PW through combining two beams can be obtained by using MPC and current available optics. This new optical design will simplify the compressor, improve the stability, and save expensive gratings/optics simultaneously. Together with the multi-beam tiled-aperture combining method, the tiled-grating method, larger gratings, or negative chirp pulse based self-compression method, several 100s PW laser beam is expected to be obtained by using this MPC method in the future, which will further extend the ultra-intense laser physics research fields., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

The upper limit of the laser field strength in perfect vacuum is usually considered as the Schwinger field, corresponding to ~10^29W/cm^2. We investigate such limitations under realistic non-ideal vacuum conditions and find out that intensity suppression appears starting from 10^25W/cm^2, showing an upper threshold at 1026W/cm^2 level if the residual electron density in chamber surpasses 109cm^-^3. This is because the presence of residual electrons triggers the avalanche of quantum-electrodynamics cascade that creates copious electron and positron pairs. The leptons are further trapped within the driving laser field due to radiation-reaction, which significantly depletes the laser energy. The relationship between the attainable intensity and the vacuity is given according to particle-in-cell simulations and theoretical analysis. These results answer a critical problem on the achievable light intensity based on present vacuum conditions and provide a guideline for future 100's-Petawatt class laser development., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Supercontinuum (SC) light source has advanced ultrafast laser spectroscopy in condensed matter science, biology, physics, and chemistry. Compared to the frequently used photonic crystal fibers and bulk materials, femtosecond laser filamentation in gases is damage-immune for supercontinuum generation. A bottleneck problem is the strong jitters from filament induced self-heating at kHz repetition rate level. We demonstrate stable kHz supercontinuum generation directly in air with multiple mJ level pulse energy. This is achieved by applying an external DC electric field to the air plasma filament through the effects of plasma wave guiding and Coulomb interaction. Both pointing and intensity jitters of 1 kHz air filament induced SC light are reduced by more than 2 fold. This offers the opportunities for stable intense SC generation and other laser filament based applications in air.

One of the most serious bottleneck on achieving kilojoule-level high-energy petawatt (PW) to hundreds-petawatt (100PW) lasers with ps to fs pulse duration is the requirement of as large as meter-sized gratings in the compressor so as to avoid the laser-induced damage to the gratings. However, this kind of meter-sized grating with high quality is hard to manufacture so far. Here, we propose a new in-house beam-splitting compressor based on the property that the damage threshold of gratings depend on the pulse duration. The new scheme will simultaneously improve the stability, save expensive gratings, and simplify the size of compressor because the split beams share the first two parallel gratings. Furthermore, based on the fact that the transmitted wavefront of a glass plate can be much better and more precisely controlled than that of the diffraction wavefront of a large grating, then glass plates with designed transmitted wavefront are proposed to compensate the wavefront distortion introduced by the second, the third gratings, and other optics in-house such as the beam splitter. This simple and economical method can compensate the space-time distortion in the compressor and then improve the focal intensity, which otherwise cannot be compensated by the deformable mirror outside the compressor due to angular chirp. Together with multi-beams tiled-aperture combining scheme, the novel compressor provides a new scheme to achieve high-energy PW-100PW lasers or even exawatt lasers with relatively small gratings in the future., Comment: 6 figures

The temporal contrast is one of the most important parameters of an ultra-high intense laser pulse. Third-order auto-correlator or cross-correlator have been widely used to characterize the temporal contrast of an ultra-intense laser pulse in the past decades. Here, a novel and simple single-shot fourth-order auto-correlator to characterize the temporal contrast with higher time resolution and better pulse contrast fidelity in comparison to third-order correlators is proposed. The single-shot fourth-order autocorrelation consists of a frequency degenerate four-wave mixing process and a sum-frequency mixing process. The proof-of-principle experiments show that a dynamic range of approximately 10^11 compared with the noise level, a time resolution of approximately 160 fs, and a time window of 65 ps can be successfully obtained using the novel single-shot fourth-order auto-correlator, which is the highest dynamic range with simultaneous high time resolution for single-shot temporal contrast measurement so far. Furthermore, the temporal contrast of laser pulse from a PW laser system is successfully measured in single-shot with a dynamic range of about 2*10^10 and simultaneous a time resolution of 160 fs., Comment: 29 pages 9 figures

A single-shot characterization of the temporal contrast of a petawatt laser pulse with a high dynamic-range, is important not only for improving conditions of the petawatt laser facility itself, but also for various high-intensity laser physics experiments, which is still a difficult problem. In this study, a new idea for improving the dynamic-range of a single-shot temporal contrast measurement using novel temporal contrast reduction techniques is proposed. The proof-of-principle experiments applying single stage of pulse stretching, anti-saturated absorption, or optical Kerr effect successfully reduce the temporal contrast by approximately one order of magnitude. Combining with the SRSI-ETE method, its dynamic-range characterization capability is improved by approximately one order of magnitude to approximately 109. It is expected that a higher dynamic-range temporal contrast can be characterized using cascaded temporal contrast reduction processes., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures

Polarization dependence on clamping intensity inside femtosecond filament was experimentally measured in air. By tuning the laser pulse ellipse from linear polarization to circular polarization, the measured clamping intensity inside laser filament is gradually increased up to 1.7 times. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation results by solving the extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). The polarization sensitive clamping intensity inside filaments offers an important factor towards fully understanding the polarization related phenomenon observed so far.

We demonstrate the generation of 100-{\mu}J-level multicolored femtosecond pulses based on a single-stage cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) process in a thin glass plate. The generated high-energy CFWM signals can shift the central wavelength and have well-enhanced temporal contrast because of the third-order nonlinear process. They are innovatively used as clean sampling pulses of a cross-correlator for single-shot temporal contrast measurement. With a simple home-made setup, the proof-of-principle experimental results demonstrate the single-shot cross-correlator with dynamic range of 1010, temporal resolution of about 160 fs and temporal window of 50 ps. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration in which both the dynamic range and the temporal resolution of a single-shot temporal contrast measurement are comparable to those of a commercial delay-scanning cross-correlator., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

We report on a method to experimentally generate ionic wind by coupling an external high voltage electric field with an intense femtosecond laser induced air plasma filament. The measured ionic wind velocity could be as strong as >4 m/s. It could be optimized by changing the applied electric field and the laser induced plasma channel. The experimental observation was qualitatively confirmed by a numerical simulation of spatial distribution of the electric field. This technique is robust and free from sharp metallic electrodes for coronas; it opens a way to optically generate ionic wind at a distance.

A carrier envelope phase stable near-single cycle mid-infrared laser based on optical parametric chirped pulse amplification and hollow-core-fiber compression is demonstrated. 4 {\mu}m laser pulses with 11.8 mJ energy are delivered from a KTA based OPCPA with 100 Hz repetition rate, and compressed to be ~105 fs by a two-grating compressor with efficiency over 50%. Subsequently, the pulse spectrum is broadened by employing a krypton gas-filled hollow-core-fiber (HCF). Then, the pulse duration is further compressed to 21.5 fs through a CaF2 bulk material with energy of 2.6 mJ and stability of 0.9% RMS, which is about 1.6 cycle for 4 {\mu}m laser pulse. The near-single cycle 4 {\mu}m laser pulse CEP is passively stabilized with ~370 mrad based on a CEP stable 4 {\mu}m OPA injection.

The first high harmonic spectrum, containing only the odd orders, was observed in experiments 30 years ago (1987). However, a spectrum containing pure even harmonics has never been observed. We investigate the generation of pure even harmonics from oriented CO molecules in linearly polarized laser fields employing the time-dependent density-functional theory. We find that the even harmonics, with no odd orders, are generated with the polarization perpendicular to the laser polarization, when the molecular axis of CO is perpendicular to the laser polarization. Generation of pure even harmonics reveals a type of dipole acceleration originating from the permanent dipole moment. This phenomenon exists in all system with permanent dipole moments, including bulk crystal and polyatomic molecules.

The laser-plasma accelerator has attracted great interest for constituting an alternative in the production of the relativistic electron beams of high peak current. But the generated electron beam has poor monochrome and emittance, which make it difficult to produce high brightness radiation. Here we propose a compact flexible laser undulator based on ponderomotive force to constitute a millimeter-sized synchrotron radiation source of X-ray. We demonstrate that it can produce bright radiation with tens of keV energies. This opens a new path to compact synchrotron source with high power laser., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We theoretically investigate the generation of intense keV attosecond pulses in an orthogonally polarized multicycle midinfrared two-color laser field. It is demonstrated that multiple continuum-like humps, which have a spectral width of about twenty orders of harmonics and an intensity of about one order higher than adjacent normal harmonic peaks, are generated under proper two-color delays, owing to the reduction of the number of electron-ion recollisions and suppression of inter-half-cycle interference effect of multiple electron trajectories when the long wavelength midinfrared driving field is used. Using the semiclassical trajectory model, we have revealed the two-dimensional manipulation of the electron-ion recollision process, which agrees well with the time frequency analysis. By filtering these humps, intense isolated attosecond pulses are directly generated without any phase compensation. Our proposal provides a simple technique to generate intense isolated attosecond pulses with various central photon energies covering the multi-keV spectral regime by using multicycle driving pulses with high pump energy in experiment., Comment: 11 pages,5 figures, research article

The self-referenced spectral interferometry (SRSI) technique, which is usually used for microjoule-level femtosecond pulses characterization, is improved to characterize weak femtosecond pulses with nanojoule based on the transient-grating effect. Both femtosecond pulses from an amplifier with 3 nJ per pulse at 1 kHz repetition rates and femtosecond pulses from an oscillator with less than 0.5 nJ per pulse at 84 MHz repetition rates are successfully characterized. Furthermore, through a special design, the optical setup of the device is even smaller than a palm which will makes it simple and convenient during the application. These improvements extend the application of SRSI technique to the characterization of femtosecond pulses in a broad range. Not only pulses from an amplifier but also pulses from an oscillator or weak pulses used in ultrafast spectroscopy can be monitored with this SRSI method right now., Comment: 8 pages 3 figures

Atomic clusters presents an isolated system that models the bulk materials whose mechanism of HHG remains uncertain, and a promising medium to produce HHG beyond the limited conversion efficiency for gaseous atoms. Here we reveal that the oscillation of collective electron motion within clusters develops after the interaction of intense laser fields, and it significantly enhances the harmonic dipole and increases the quantum phase of the harmonics. Experimentally, the phase matching conditions of HHG from nanometer xenon clusters and atoms are distinguished, which confirms the enhanced internal field that was proposed theoretically a decade ago. The separation of HHG from atoms and clusters allows the determination of the amplitude of the HHG for clusters to be 5 orders higher, corresponding to 4 times higher conversion efficiency for atomic response. The finding provides an insight on the HHG mechanism of bulk materials and a means by which an efficient coherent X-ray source can be developed.

Contribution of plasma oscillation to the broadband terahertz emission is revealed by interacting two-color laser pulses with a supersonic jet of nitrogen molecules. Temporal and spectral shifts of THz waves are observed as the plasma density varies. The former owes to the changing refractive index of the THz waves, and the latter correlates to the varying plasma frequency. Simulation of considering photocurrents, plasma oscillation and decaying plasma density explains the broadband THz spectrum and the varying THz spectrum. Plasma oscillation only contributes to THz waves at low plasma density owing to negligible plasma absorption. At the longer medium or higher density, the combining effects of plasma oscillation and absorption results in the observed low-frequency broadband THz spectra.

Laser based lightning control holds a promising way to solve the problem of the long standing disaster of lightning strikes. But it is a challenging project due to insufficient understanding of the interaction between laser plasma channel and high voltage electric filed. In this work, a direct observation of laser guided corona discharge is reported. The high voltage corona discharge can be guided along laser plasma filament, and enhanced through the interaction with laser filaments. The fluorescence lifetime of laser filament guided corona discharge was measured to be several microseconds, which is 3 orders of magnitude longer than the fluorescence lifetime of laser filaments. This could be advantageous towards laser assisted leader development in the atmosphere.

The evolution of THz waveform generated in air plasma provides a sensitive probe to the variation of the carrier envelope phase (CEP) of propagating intense few-cycle pulses. Our experimental observation and calculation reveal that the number and positions of the inversion of THz waveform are dependent on the initial CEP, which is near 0.5{\pi} constantly under varied input pulse energies when two inversions of THz waveform in air plasma become one. This provides a method of measuring the initial CEP in an accuracy that is only limited by the stability of the driving few-cycle pulses., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Waveform-controlled Terahertz (THz) radiation is of great importance due to its potential application in THz sensing and coherent control of quantum systems. We demonstrated a novel scheme to generate waveform-controlled THz radiation from air plasma produced when carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) stabilized few-cycle laser pulses undergo filamentation in ambient air. We launched CEP-stabilized 10 fs-long (~ 1.7 optical cycles) laser pulses at 1.8 {\mu}m into air and found that the generated THz waveform can be controlled by varying the filament length and the CEP of driving laser pulses. Calculations using the photocurrent model and including the propagation effects well reproduce the experimental results, and the origins of various phase shifts in the filament are elucidated., Comment: 5pages, 5 figures
