Search

Ordered atomic arrays feature an enhanced collective optical response compared to random atomic ensembles due to constructive interference in resonant dipole-dipole interactions. One consequence is the existence of a large shift of the transition with respect to the bare atomic frequency. In the linear optics regime (low light intensity), one observes a spectroscopic shift of the Lorentzian atomic line often called the collective Lamb shift. For stronger driving, many excitations are present in the system rendering the calculation of this shift theoretically challenging, but its understanding is important for instance when performing Ramsey spectroscopy in optical clocks. Here we report on the study of the collective optical response of a one-dimensional array of 30 dysprosium atoms. We drive the atoms on the narrow intercombination transition isolating a 2-level system, and measure the atomic state with single-shot state readout using a broad transition. In the linear optics regime, we measure the shift of the resonance in steady state due to dipole interactions, and measure how this shift depends on the interatomic distance. We further resolve at the single atom level how the excitation is distributed over the array. Then, on the same transition we perform Ramsey spectroscopy \emph{i.\,e.}~away from the linear regime. We observe a time-dependent shift, that allows us to draw the connection between the collective Lamb shift observed in the linear optics regime and in the large-excitation case.

We investigate the evolution of the second-order temporal coherence during the emission of a superradiant burst by an elongated cloud of cold Rb atoms in free space. To do so, we measure the two-times intensity correlation function $g_N^{(2)}(t_1, t_2)$ following the pulsed excitation of the cloud. By monitoring $g_N^{(2)}(t, t)$ during the burst, we observe the establishment of second-order coherence, and contrast it with the situation where the cloud is initially prepared in a steady state. We compare our findings to the predictions of the Dicke model, using an effective atom number to account for finite size effects, finding that the model reproduces the observed trend at early time. For longer times, we observe a subradiant decay, a feature that goes beyond Dicke's model. Finally, we measure the $g_N^{(2)}(t_1, t_2)$ at different times and observe the appearance of anti-correlations during the burst, that are not present when starting from a steady state.

Laser site-selective spectroscopy and high-resolution absorption measurements have been used to determine 51 crystal-field energy levels for one of the Ho$^{3+}$ centres in Y$_{2}$SiO$_{5}$. This centre is denoted as Site 2 and has been tentatively assigned as the seven-fold coordinated centre. High resolution absorption measurements reveal complex hyperfine patterns that obey and approximate selection rule. The application of a magnetic field along the three optical axes reveals the presence of avoided crossings below 0.5 Tesla, in both the ground and excited states.

We report experimental measurements of the dynamical polarizability of dysprosium, at a wavelength of 532 nm. We measure all three components (scalar, vector, tensor) of the anisotropic polarizability for the ground and the excited manifolds of the intercombination transition of Dy at 626 nm. The apparatus on which the measurements are performed is first presented. We obtain with this setup imaging of single Dy atoms with fidelity above 99 % and losses below 2.5 % induced by imaging. We then describe the methods used to extract the polarizability. In particular, we combine a measurement of trap frequency and trap depth on single atoms in optical tweezers, allowing us to obtain a measurement of the ground state polarizability free of errors in trap waist calibration. The obtained values give a magic condition between two Zeeman states in the ground and excited manifolds, which was used to image single atoms in optical tweezer arrays. The scalar polarizability of the ground state is in disagreement with theoretical expectations, calling for future investigations to resolve the discrepancy.

Ultra-cold atomic systems are among the most promising platforms that have the potential to shed light on the complex behavior of many-body quantum systems. One prominent example is the case of a dense ensemble illuminated by a strong coherent drive while interacting via dipole-dipole interactions. Despite being subjected to intense investigations, this system retains many open questions. A recent experiment carried out in a pencil-shaped geometry reported measurements that seemed consistent with the emergence of strong collective effects in the form of a ``superradiant'' phase transition in free space, when looking at the light emission properties in the forward direction. Motivated by the experimental observations, we carry out a systematic theoretical analysis of the system's steady-state properties as a function of the driving strength and atom number, $N$. We observe signatures of collective effects in the weak drive regime, which disappear with increasing drive strength as the system evolves into a single-particle-like mixed state comprised of randomly aligned dipoles. Although the steady-state features some similarities to the reported superradiant to normal non-equilibrium transition, also known as cooperative resonance fluorescence, we observe significant qualitative and quantitative differences, including a different scaling of the critical drive parameter (from $N$ to $\sqrt{N}$). We validate the applicability of a mean-field treatment to capture the steady-state dynamics under currently accessible conditions. Furthermore, we develop a simple theoretical model that explains the scaling properties by accounting for interaction-induced inhomogeneous effects and spontaneous emission, which are intrinsic features of interacting disordered arrays in free space., Comment: 25 pages, 19 figures

We report experimental measurements of the second-order coherence function $g^{(2)}(\tau)$ of the light emitted by a laser-driven dense ensemble of $^{87}$Rb atoms. We observe a clear departure from the Siegert relation valid for Gaussian chaotic light. Measuring intensity and first-order coherence, we conclude that the violation is not due to the emergence of a coherent field. This indicates that the light obeys non-Gaussian statistics, stemming from non-Gaussian correlations in the atomic medium. More specifically, the steady-state of this driven-dissipative many-body system sustains high-order correlations in the absence of first-order coherence. These findings call for new theoretical and experimental explorations to uncover their origin and they open new perspectives for the realization of non-Gaussian states of light.

We report the preparation and observation of single atoms of dysprosium in arrays of optical tweezers with a wavelength of 532 nm imaged on the intercombination line at 626 nm. We use the anisotropic light shift specific to lanthanides and in particular a large difference in tensor and vector polarizabilities between the ground and excited states to tune the differential light shift and produce tweezers in near-magic or magic polarization. This allows us to find a regime where single atoms can be produced and imaged. Using the tweezer array toolbox to manipulate lanthanides will open new research directions for quantum physics studies by taking advantage of their rich spectrum, large spin and magnetic dipole moment.

A class of systems exists in which dissipation, external drive and interactions compete and give rise to non equilibrium phases that would not exist without the drive. There, phase transitions could occur without the breaking of any symmetry, yet with a local order parameter, in contrast with the Landau theory of phase transitions at equilibrium. One of the simplest driven dissipative quantum systems consists of two-level atoms enclosed in a volume smaller than the wavelength of the atomic transition cubed, driven by a light field. The competition between collective coupling of the atoms to the driving field and their cooperative decay should lead to a transition between a phase where all the atomic dipoles are phaselocked and a phase governed by superradiant spontaneous emission. Here, we realize this model using a pencil-shaped cloud of laser cooled atoms in free space, optically excited along its main axis, and observe the predicted phases. We report on the development and application of a parametrized crystal-field model for both C$_{1}$ symmetry centers in trivalent erbium-doped Y$_{2}$SiO$_{5}$. High resolution Zeeman and temperature dependent absorption spectroscopy was performed to acquire the necessary experimental data. The obtained data, in addition to the ground ($^{4}$I$_{15/2}$Z$_{1}$) state and exited ($^{4}$I$_{13/2}$Y$_{1}$) state Zeeman and hyperfine structure, was simultaneously fitted in order to refine an existing crystal-field interpretation of the Er$^{3+}$:Y$_{2}$SiO$_{5}$ system. We demonstrate that it is possible to account for the electronic, magnetic and hyperfine structure of the full 4f$^{11}$ configuration of Er$^{3+}$:Y$_{2}$SiO$_{5}$ and further, that it is possible to predict both optical polarization behavior and high magnetic field hyperfine structure of transitions in the 1.5 $\mu$m telecommunications band.

Since the achievement of quantum degeneracy in gases of chromium atoms in 2004, the experimental investigation of ultracold gases made of highly magnetic atoms has blossomed. The field has yielded the observation of many unprecedented phenomena, in particular those in which long-range and anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions play a crucial role. In this review, we aim to present the aspects of the magnetic quantum-gas platform that make it unique for exploring ultracold and quantum physics as well as to give a thorough overview of experimental achievements.

We report a time-resolved study of collective emission in dense ensembles of two-level atoms. We compare, on the same sample, the build-up of superradiance and subradiance from the ensemble when driven by a strong laser. This allows us to measure the dynamics of the population of superradiant and subradiant states as a function of time. In particular we demonstrate the build up in time of subradiant states through the superradiant dynamics. This illustrates the dynamics of the many-body density matrix of superradiant ensembles of two-level atoms when departing from the ideal conditions of Dicke superradiance in which symmetry forbids the population of subradiant states.

We report the experimental observation of superradiant emission emanating from an elongated dense ensemble of laser cooled two-level atoms, with a radial extent smaller than the transition wavelength. In the presence of a strong driving laser, we observe that the system is superradiant along its symmmetry axis. This occurs even though the driving laser is orthogonal to the superradiance direction. This superradiance modifies the spontaneous emission, and, resultantly, the Rabi oscillations. We also investigate Dicke superradiance in the emission of an almost fully-inverted system as a function of atom numnber. The experimental results are in qualitative agreement with ab-initio, beyond-mean-field calculations.

High-resolution Zeeman spectroscopy of electronic-nuclear hyperfine levels of ${^5\mathrm{I}_8}\rightarrow{^5\mathrm{I}_7}$ transitions in Ho$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ is reported. Crystal-field parameters determined for the two $C_1$ symmetry sites in Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ are successfully used to model the Zeeman-hyperfine data, including the prediction of avoided crossings between hyperfine levels under the influence of an external magnetic field. The two six- and seven-coordinate substitutional sites may be distinguished by comparing the spectra with crystal-field calculations.

We report the efficient and fast ($\sim 2\mathrm{Hz}$) preparation of randomly loaded 1D chains of individual $^{87}$Rb atoms and of dense atomic clouds trapped in optical tweezers using a new experimental platform. This platform is designed for the study of both structured and disordered atomic systems in free space. It is composed of two high-resolution optical systems perpendicular to each other, enhancing observation and manipulation capabilities. The setup includes a dynamically controllable telescope, which we use to vary the tweezer beam waist. A D1 $\Lambda$-enhanced gray molasses enhances the loading of the traps from a magneto-optical trap. Using these tools, we prepare chains of up to $\sim 100$ atoms separated by $\sim 1 \mathrm{\mu m}$ by retro-reflecting the tweezer light, hence producing a 1D optical lattice with strong transverse confinement. Dense atomic clouds with peak densities up to $n_0 = 10^{15}\:\mathrm{at}/\mathrm{cm}^3$ are obtained by compression of an initial cloud. This high density results into interatomic distances smaller than $\lambda/(2\pi)$ for the D2 optical transitions, making it ideal to study light-induced interactions in dense samples.

We report the observation of subradiance in dense ensembles of cold $^{87}$Rb atoms operating near Dicke's regime of a large number of atoms in a volume with dimensions smaller than the transition wavelength. We validate that the atom number is the only cooperativity parameter governing subradiance. We probe the dynamics in the many-body regime and support the picture that multiply-excited subradiant states are built as a superposition of singly-excited states that decay independently. Moreover, we implement an experimental procedure to release the excitation stored in the long-lived modes in a pulse of light. This technique is a first step towards the realization of tailored light storing based on subradiance.

Fully inverted atoms placed at exactly the same location synchronize as they deexcite, and light is emitted in a burst (known as "Dicke's superradiance"). We investigate the role of finite interatomic separation on correlated decay in mesoscopic chains, and provide an understanding in terms of collective jump operators. We show that the superradiant burst survives at small distances, despite Hamiltonian dipole-dipole interactions. However, for larger separations, competition between different jump operators leads to dephasing, suppressing superradiance. Collective effects are still significant for arrays with lattice constants of the order of a wavelength, and lead to a photon emission rate that decays nonexponentially in time. We calculate the two-photon correlation function and demonstrate that emission is correlated and directional, as well as sensitive to small changes in the interatomic distance. These features can be measured in current experimental setups, and are robust to realistic imperfections., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

We experimentally study resonant light scattering by a one-dimensional randomly filled chain of cold two-level atoms. By a local measurement of the light scattered along the chain, we observe constructive interferences in light-induced dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms. They lead to a shift of the collective resonance despite the average interatomic distance being larger than the wavelength of the light. This result demonstrates that strong collective effects can be enhanced by structuring the geometrical arrangement of the ensemble. We also explore the high intensity regime where atoms cannot be described classically. We compare our measurement to a mean-field, nonlinear coupled-dipole model accounting for the saturation of the response of a single atom.

Zeeman spectroscopy is used to demonstrate that phenomenological crystal-field parameters determined for the two $C_1$ point-group sites in Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ may be transferred to other ions. The two crystallographic six- and seven-coordinate substitutional sites may be distinguished by comparing the spectra with crystal-field calculations.

In this article we develop the framework to describe Bose-Fermi mixtures of magnetic atoms, focusing on the interaction of bosonic self-bound dipolar quantum droplets with a small number of fermions. We find an attractive interaction potential due to the dipolar interaction with several bound states, which can be occupied by one fermion each, resulting in a very weak back-action on the bosons. We present transport measurements on a dipolar superfluid using a Bose-Einstein condensate of Dy-162 with strong magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. By moving an attractive laser beam through the condensate we observe an anisotropy in superfluid flow. This observation is compatible with an anisotropic critical velocity for the breakdown of dissipationless flow, which, in the spirit of the Landau criterion, can directly be connected to the anisotropy of the underlying dipolar excitation spectrum. In addition, the heating rate above this critical velocity reflects the same anisotropy. Our observations are in excellent agreement with simulations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and highlight the effect of dipolar interactions on macroscopic transport properties, rendering dissipation anisotropic.

Rare-earth ion doped crystals are promising systems for quantum communication and quantum information processing. In particular, paramagnetic rare-earth centres can be utilized to realize quantum coherent interfaces simultaneously for optical and microwave photons. In this article, we study hyperfine and magnetic properties of a Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal doped with $^{171}$Yb$^{3+}$ ions. This isotope is particularly interesting since it is the only rare--earth ion having electronic spin $S=\frac{1}{2}$ and nuclear spin $I=\frac{1}{2}$, which results in the simplest possible hyperfine level structure. In this work we determine the hyperfine tensors for the ground and excited states on the optical $^2$F$_{7/2}(0) \longleftrightarrow ^2$F$_{5/2}$(0) transition by combining spectral holeburning and optically detected magnetic resonance techniques. The resulting spin Hamiltonians correctly predict the magnetic-field dependence of all observed optical-hyperfine transitions, from zero applied field to the high-field regime where the Zeeman interaction is dominating. Using the optical absorption spectrum we can also determine the order of the hyperfine levels in both states. These results pave the way for realizing solid-state optical and microwave quantum memories based on a $^{171}$Yb$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures + appendix

Solid-state electronic spins are extensively studied in quantum information science, as their large magnetic moments offer fast operations for computing and communication, and high sensitivity for sensing. However, electronic spins are more sensitive to magnetic noise, but engineering of their spectroscopic properties, e.g. using clock transitions and isotopic engineering, can yield remarkable spin coherence times, as for electronic spins in GaAs, donors in silicon and vacancy centres in diamond. Here we demonstrate simultaneously induced clock transitions for both microwave and optical domains in an isotopically purified $^{171}$Yb$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal, reaching coherence times of above 100 $\mu$s and 1 ms in the optical and microwave domain, respectively. This effect is due to the highly anisotropic hyperfine interaction, which makes each electronic-nuclear state an entangled Bell state. Our results underline the potential of $^{171}$Yb$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ for quantum processing applications relying on both optical and spin manipulation, such as optical quantum memories, microwave-tooptical quantum transducers, and single spin detection, while they should also be observable in a range of different materials with anisotropic hyperfine interaction., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures + Supplementary information

We report on the observation of the scissors mode of a single dipolar quantum droplet. The existence of this mode is due to the breaking of the rotational symmetry by the dipole-dipole interaction, which is fixed along an external homogeneous magnetic field. By modulating the orientation of this magnetic field, we introduce a new spectroscopic technique for studying dipolar quantum droplets. This provides a precise probe for interactions in the system allowing to extract a background scattering length for \textsuperscript{164}Dy of $69(4)\,a_0$. Our results establish an analogy between quantum droplets and atomic nuclei, where the existence of the scissors mode is also only due to internal interactions. They further open the possibility to explore physics beyond the available theoretical models for strongly-dipolar quantum gases.

Efficient optical pumping is an important tool for state initialization in quantum technologies, such as optical quantum memories. In crystals doped with Kramers rare-earth ions, such as erbium and neodymium, efficient optical pumping is challenging due to the relatively short population lifetimes of the electronic Zeeman levels, of the order of 100 ms at around 4 K. In this article we show that optical pumping of the hyperfine levels in isotopically enriched $^{145}$Nd$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystals is more efficient, owing to the longer population relaxation times of hyperfine levels. By optically cycling the population many times through the excited state a nuclear-spin flip can be forced in the ground-state hyperfine manifold, in which case the population is trapped for several seconds before relaxing back to the pumped hyperfine level. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in applications we perform an atomic frequency comb memory experiment with 33% storage efficiency in $^{145}$Nd$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$, which is on a par with results obtained in non-Kramers ions, e.g. europium and praseodymium, where optical pumping is generally efficient due to the quenched electronic spin. Efficient optical pumping in neodymium-doped crystals is also of interest for spectral filtering in biomedical imaging, as neodymium has an absorption wavelength compatible with tissue imaging. We explore the phase diagram of a finite-sized dysprosium dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a cylindrical harmonic trap. We monitor the final state after the scattering length is lowered from the repulsive BEC regime to the quantum droplet regime. Either an adiabatic transformation between a BEC and a quantum droplet is obtained or, above a critical trap aspect ratio $\lambda_{\rm c}=1.87(14)$, a modulational instability results in the formation of multiple droplets. This is in full agreement with the predicted structure of the phase diagram with a crossover region below $\lambda_{\rm c}$ and a multistable region above. Our results provide the missing piece connecting the previously explored regimes resulting in a single or multiple dipolar quantum droplets.

We study theoretically and experimentally the behaviour of a strongly confined dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, in the regime of quantum-mechanical stabilization by beyond-mean-field effects. Theoretically, we demonstrate that self-organized striped ground states are predicted in the framework of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii theory. Experimentally, by tilting the magnetic dipoles we show that self-organized striped states can be generated, likely in their metastable state. Matter-wave interference experiments with multiple stripes show that there is no long-range off-diagonal order (global phase coherence). We outline a parameter range where global phase coherence could be established, thus paving the way towards the observation of supersolid states in this system., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The simultaneous presence of two competing inter-particle interactions can lead to the emergence of new phenomena in a many-body system. Among others, such effects are expected in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, subject to dipole-dipole interaction and short-range repulsion. Magnetic quantum gases and in particular Dysprosium gases, offering a comparable short-range contact and a long-range dipolar interaction energy, remarkably exhibit such emergent phenomena. In addition an effective cancellation of mean-field effects of the two interactions results in a pronounced importance of quantum-mechanical beyond mean-field effects. For a weakly-dominant dipolar interaction the striking consequence is the existence of a new state of matter equilibrated by the balance between weak mean-field attraction and beyond mean-field repulsion. Though exemplified here in the case of dipolar Bose gases, this state of matter should appear also with other microscopic interactions types, provided a competition results in an effective cancellation of the total mean-field. The macroscopic state takes the form of so-called quantum droplets. Self-bound many-body systems are formed through a balance of attractive and repulsive forces and occur in many physical scenarios. Liquid droplets are an example of a self-bound system, formed by a balance of the mutual attractive and repulsive forces that derive from different components of the inter-particle potential. It has been suggested that self-bound ensembles of ultracold atoms should exist for atom number densities that are 10^8 times lower than in a helium droplet, which is formed from a dense quantum liquid. However, such ensembles have been elusive up to now because they require forces other than the usual zero-range contact interaction, which is either attractive or repulsive but never both. On the basis of the recent finding that an unstable bosonic dipolar gas can be stabilized by a repulsive many-body term, it was predicted that three-dimensional self-bound quantum droplets of magnetic atoms should exist. Here we report the observation of such droplets in a trap-free levitation field. We find that this dilute magnetic quantum liquid requires a minimum, critical number of atoms, below which the liquid evaporates into an expanding gas as a result of the quantum pressure of the individual constituents. Consequently, around this critical atom number we observe an interaction-driven phase transition between a gas and a self-bound liquid in the quantum degenerate regime with ultracold atoms. These droplets are the dilute counterpart of strongly correlated self-bound systems such as atomic nuclei and helium droplets.

We perform hole burning with a low drift stabilized laser within the zero phonon line of the 4f-5d transition in Ce$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ at 2K. The narrowest spectral holes appear for small applied magnetic fields and are $6\pm4$ MHz wide (FWHM). This puts an upper bound on the homogeneous linewidth of the transition to $3\pm2$ MHz, which is close to lifetime limited. The spin level relaxation time is measured to $72\pm21$ ms with a magnetic field of 10 mT. A slow permanent hole burning mechanism is observed. If the excitation frequency is not changed the fluorescence intensity is reduced by more than 50$\%$ after a couple of minutes of continuous excitation. The spectral hole created by the permanent hole burning has a width in the tens of MHz range, which indicates that a trapping mechanism occurs via the 5d-state.

Quantum fluctuations are the origin of genuine quantum many-body effects, and can be neglected in classical mean-field phenomena. Here we report on the observation of stable quantum droplets containing $\sim$ 800 atoms which are expected to collapse at the mean-field level due to the essentially attractive interaction. By systematic measurements on individual droplets we demonstrate quantitatively that quantum fluctuations stabilize them against the mean-field collapse. We observe in addition interference of several droplets indicating that this stable many-body state is phase coherent.

Ferrofluids show unusual hydrodynamic effects due to the magnetic nature of their constituents. For increasing magnetization a classical ferrofluid undergoes a Rosensweig instability and creates self-organized ordered surface structures or droplet crystals. A Bose-Einstein condensate with strong dipolar interactions is a quantum ferrofluid that also shows superfluidity. The field of dipolar quantum gases is motivated by the search for new phases that break continuous symmetries. The simultaneous breaking of continuous symmetries like the phase invariance for the superfluid state and the translational symmetry for a crystal provides the basis of novel states of matter. However, interaction-induced crystallization in a superfluid has not been observed. Here we use in situ imaging to directly observe the spontaneous transition from an unstructured superfluid to an ordered arrangement of droplets in an atomic dysprosium Bose-Einstein condensate. By utilizing a Feshbach resonance to control the interparticle interactions, we induce a finite-wavelength instability and observe discrete droplets in a triangular structure, growing with increasing atom number. We find that these states are surprisingly long-lived and measure a hysteretic behaviour, which is typical for a crystallization process and in close analogy to the Rosensweig instability. Our system can show both superfluidity and, as shown here, spontaneous translational symmetry breaking. The presented observations do not probe superfluidity in the structured states, but if the droplets establish a common phase via weak links, this system is a very good candidate for a supersolid ground state.

We show that for ultracold magnetic lanthanide atoms chaotic scattering emerges due to a combination of anisotropic interaction potentials and Zeeman coupling under an external magnetic field. This scattering is studied in a collaborative experimental and theoretical effort for both dysprosium and erbium. We present extensive atom-loss measurements of their dense magnetic Feshbach resonance spectra, analyze their statistical properties, and compare to predictions from a random-matrix-theory inspired model. Furthermore, theoretical coupled-channels simulations of the anisotropic molecular Hamiltonian at zero magnetic field show that weakly-bound, near threshold diatomic levels form overlapping, uncoupled chaotic series that when combined are randomly distributed. The Zeeman interaction shifts and couples these levels, leading to a Feshbach spectrum of zero-energy bound states with nearest-neighbor spacings that changes from randomly to chaotically distributed for increasing magnetic field. Finally, we show that the extreme temperature sensitivity of a small, but sizeable fraction of the resonances in the Dy and Er atom-loss spectra is due to resonant non-zero partial-wave collisions. Our threshold analysis for these resonances indicates a large collision-energy dependence of the three-body recombination rate.

We report on the observation of weakly-bound dimers of bosonic Dysprosium with a strong universal s-wave halo character, associated with broad magnetic Feshbach resonances. These states surprisingly decouple from the chaotic backgound of narrow resonances, persisting across many such narrow resonances. In addition they show the highest reported magnetic moment $\mu\simeq20\,\mu_{\rm B}$ of any ultracold molecule. We analyze our findings using a coupled-channel theory taking into account the short range van der Waals interaction and a correction due to the strong dipole moment of Dysprosium. We are able to extract the scattering length as a function of magnetic field associated with these resonances and obtain a background scattering length $a_{\rm bg}=91(16)\,a_0$. These results offer prospects of a tunability of the interactions in Dysprosium, which we illustrate by observing the saturation of three-body losses.

The low temperature unitary Bose gas is a fundamental paradigm in few-body and many-body physics, attracting wide theoretical and experimental interest. Here we first present a theoretical model that describes the dynamic competition between two-body evaporation and three-body re-combination in a harmonically trapped unitary atomic gas above the condensation temperature. We identify a universal magic trap depth where, within some parameter range, evaporative cooling is balanced by recombination heating and the gas temperature stays constant. Our model is developed for the usual three-dimensional evaporation regime as well as the 2D evaporation case. Experiments performed with unitary 133 Cs and 7 Li atoms fully support our predictions and enable quantitative measurements of the 3-body recombination rate in the low temperature domain. In particular, we measure for the first time the Efimov inelasticity parameter $\eta$ * = 0.098(7) for the 47.8-G d-wave Feshbach resonance in 133 Cs. Combined 133 Cs and 7 Li experimental data allow investigations of loss dynamics over two orders of magnitude in temperature and four orders of magnitude in three-body loss. We confirm the 1/T 2 temperature universality law up to the constant $\eta$ *.

Following the bichromatic sub-Doppler cooling scheme on the D1 line of 40K recently demonstrated in (Fernandes et al. 2012), we introduce a similar technique for 7Li atoms and obtain temperatures of 60 uK while capturing all of the 5x10^8 atoms present from the previous stage. We investigate the influence of the detuning between the the two cooling frequencies and observe a threefold decrease of the temperature when the Raman condition is fulfilled. We interpret this effect as arising from extra cooling due to long-lived coherences between hyperfine states. Solving the optical Bloch equations for a simplified, \Lambda-type three-level system we identify the presence of an efficient cooling force near the Raman condition. After transfer into a quadrupole magnetic trap, we measure a phase space density of ~10^-5. This laser cooling offers a promising route for fast evaporation of lithium atoms to quantum degeneracy in optical or magnetic traps., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev. Through a combination of spin-exchange collisions in a magnetic field and optical pumping, it is possible to cool a gas of atoms without requiring the loss of atoms from the gas. We investigated this technique, Collision Assisted Zeeman Cooling, using 85Rb and 87Rb. We experimentally confirmed that our measured two isotope CAZ cooling rate agreed with a cooling rate predicted though a simple analytic model. As part of the measured cooling rate, we quantitatively characterized the heating rates associated with our actual implementation of this cooling technique and found hyperfine-changing collisions to be a significant limitation for the 85/87Rb gas mixture. We comment on the prospects for improving the cooling performance beyond that presented in this work.
