Abstract: We report on a blinded analysis of low-energy electronic-recoil data from the first science run of the XENONnT dark matter experiment. Novel subsystems and the increased 5.9 tonne liquid xenon target reduced the background in the (1, 30) keV search region to $(15.8 \pm 1.3)$ events/(tonne$\times$year$\times$keV), the lowest ever achieved in a dark matter detector and $\sim$5 times lower than in XENON1T. With an exposure of 1.16 tonne-years, we observe no excess above background and set stringent new limits on solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment, and bosonic dark matter., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: Multiple viable theoretical models predict heavy dark matter particles with a mass close to the Planck mass, a range relatively unexplored by current experimental measurements. We use 219.4 days of data collected with the XENON1T experiment to conduct a blind search for signals from multiply interacting massive particles (MIMPs). Their unique track signature allows a targeted analysis with only 0.05 expected background events from muons. Following unblinding, we observe no signal candidate events. This Letter places strong constraints on spin-independent interactions of dark matter particles with a mass between 1×10$^{12}$ and 2×10$^{17}$ GeV/c$^2$. In addition, we present the first exclusion limits on spin-dependent MIMP-neutron and MIMP-proton cross sections for dark matter particles with masses close to the Planck scale.

Abstract: A low-energy electronic recoil calibration of XENON1T, a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber, with an internal 37Ar source was performed. This calibration source features a 35-day half-life and provides two mono-energetic lines at 2.82 keV and 0.27 keV. The photon yield and electron yield at 2.82 keV are measured to be (32.3±0.3) photons/keV and (40.6±0.5) electrons/keV, respectively, in agreement with other measurements and with NEST predictions. The electron yield at 0.27 keV is also measured and it is (68.0+6.3−3.7) electrons/keV. The 37Ar calibration confirms that the detector is well-understood in the energy region close to the detection threshold, with the 2.82 keV line reconstructed at (2.83±0.02) keV, which further validates the model used to interpret the low-energy electronic recoil excess previously reported by XENON1T. The ability to efficiently remove argon with cryogenic distillation after the calibration proves that 37Ar can be considered as a regular calibration source for multi-tonne xenon detectors.

Abstract: The selection of low-radioactive construction materials is of the utmost importance for rare-event searches and thus critical to the XENONnT experiment. Results of an extensive radioassay program are reported, in which material samples have been screened with gamma-ray spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn emanation measurements. Furthermore, the cleanliness procedures applied to remove or mitigate surface contamination of detector materials are described. Screening results, used as inputs for a XENONnT Monte Carlo simulation, predict a reduction of materials background ($$\sim $$ ∼ 17%) with respect to its predecessor XENON1T. Through radon emanation measurements, the expected $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn activity concentration in XENONnT is determined to be 4.2 ($$^{+0.5}_{-0.7}$$ - 0.7 + 0.5 ) $$\upmu $$ μ Bq/kg, a factor three lower with respect to XENON1T. This radon concentration will be further suppressed by means of the novel radon distillation system.

Abstract: The XENON collaboration has published stringent limits on specific dark matter – nucleon recoil spectra from dark matter recoiling on the liquid xenon detector target. In this paper, we present an approximate likelihood for the XENON1T 1 t-year nuclear recoil search applicable to any nuclear recoil spectrum. Alongside this paper, we publish data and code to compute upper limits using the method we present. The approximate likelihood is constructed in bins of reconstructed energy, profiled along the signal expectation in each bin. This approach can be used to compute an approximate likelihood and therefore most statistical results for any nuclear recoil spectrum. Computing approximate results with this method is approximately three orders of magnitude faster than the likelihood used in the original publications of XENON1T, where limits were set for specific families of recoil spectra. Using this same method, we include toy Monte Carlo simulation-derived binwise likelihoods for the upcoming XENONnT experiment that can similarly be used to assess the sensitivity to arbitrary nuclear recoil signatures in its eventual 20 t-year exposure.

Abstract: Delayed single- and few-electron emissions plague dual-phase time projection chambers, limiting their potential to search for light-mass dark matter. Abstract: The vacuum element can be used as a target in a photon-photon collider in order to study its properties. Some of these properties are predicted by Quantum Electrodynamics, while additional and unexpected properties might be linked to the existence of yet undiscovered axion-like particles (ALPs) interacting with two photons. In this low energy case (1–2 texteV), real photons from a polarized laser beam are scattered off virtual photons provided by a magnetic field. Information on the scattering processes can be obtained by measuring changes in the polarization state of the probe photons. In the PVLAS (Polarizzazione del Vuoto con LASer) experiment, running at the Legnaro Laboratory of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), near Padova, Italy, a linearly polarized laser beam is sent through a 5 textT strong magnetic field in vacuum, where it is reflected back and forth, by means of a Fabry-P’erot resonator, ∼ 50,000 times over a distance of 1 textm. A heterodyne ellipsometer allows the simultaneous detection of a birefringence and a rotation of the polarization plane. The sensitivity of the instrument allows the detection of rotation or of ellipticity angles of about 10-9 textrad, in an hour of data taking. The measurement technique employed by PVLAS will be illustrated, and recent results on polarization effects due to the magnetized vacuum will be presented in this chapter. The interpretation of these effects in terms of the production of ALPs will also be discussed. Finally, the realization of a photon-regeneration type experiment will be briefly illustrated.

Abstract: A prototype of a combined CT-SPECT tomograph for breast cancer study has been developed and evaluated. It allows to perform scintimammography and X-ray CT in the same geometrical conditions. The CT system is based on a quasi-monochromatic beam tuned at 28 keV and an array of ultra fast ceramic scintillators coupled to photodiodes whilst the SPECT system is based on two scintillator matrices coupled to position sensitive photomultipliers. CT and SPECT sinograms of a test phantom were recorded and reconstruted with both modalities. Image fusion of CT and SPECT images was then performed. The developed CT-SPECT prototype is able to detect a region of interest of 1 cm3, with a 10:1 tumour/background concentration ratio, within an object having a diameter of 8 cm. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We report the results of a search for the inelastic scattering of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the XENON1T dark matter experiment. Scattering off $^{129}$Xe is the most sensitive probe of inelastic WIMP interactions, with a signature of a 39.6 keV de-excitation photon detected simultaneously with the nuclear recoil. Using an exposure of 0.89 tonne-years, we find no evidence of inelastic WIMP scattering with a significance of more than 2$\sigma$. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis is used to set upper limits on the cross-section of WIMP-nucleus interactions. We exclude new parameter space for WIMPs heavier than 100 GeV/c${}^2$, with the strongest upper limit of $3.3 \times 10^{-39}$ cm${}^2$ for 130 GeV/c${}^2$ WIMPs at 90\% confidence level., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The selection of low-radioactive construction materials is of utmost importance for the success of low-energy rare event search experiments. Besides radioactive contaminants in the bulk, the emanation of radioactive radon atoms from material surfaces attains increasing relevance in the effort to further reduce the background of such experiments. In this work, we present the $^{222}$Rn emanation measurements performed for the XENON1T dark matter experiment. Together with the bulk impurity screening campaign, the results enabled us to select the radio-purest construction materials, targeting a $^{222}$Rn activity concentration of 10 $\mu$Bq/kg in 3.2 t of xenon. The knowledge of the distribution of the $^{222}$Rn sources allowed us to selectively eliminate critical components in the course of the experiment. The predictions from the emanation measurements were compared to data of the $^{222}$Rn activity concentration in XENON1T. The final $^{222}$Rn activity concentration of (4.5 $\pm$ 0.1) $\mu$Bq/kg in the target of XENON1T is the lowest ever achieved in a xenon dark matter experiment., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: XENONnT is a dark matter direct detection experiment, utilizing 5.9 t of instrumented liquid xenon, located at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we predict the experimental background and project the sensitivity of XENONnT to the detection of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The expected average differential background rate in the energy region of interest, corresponding to (1, 13) keV and (4, 50) keV for electronic and nuclear recoils, amounts to 12.3 ± 0.6 (keV t y)-1 and (2.2± 0.5)× 10−3 (keV t y)-1, respectively, in a 4 t fiducial mass. We compute unified confidence intervals using the profile construction method, in order to ensure proper coverage. With the exposure goal of 20 t y, the expected sensitivity to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions reaches a cross-section of 1.4×10−48 cm2 for a 50 GeV/c2 mass WIMP at 90% confidence level, more than one order of magnitude beyond the current best limit, set by XENON1T . In addition, we show that for a 50 GeV/c2 WIMP with cross-sections above 2.6×10−48 cm2 (5.0×10−48 cm2) the median XENONnT discovery significance exceeds 3σ (5σ). The expected sensitivity to the spin-dependent WIMP coupling to neutrons (protons) reaches 2.2×10−43 cm2 (6.0×10−42 cm2).

Abstract: We report results from searches for new physics with low-energy electronic recoil data recorded with the XENON1T detector. With an exposure of 0.65 t-y and an unprecedentedly low background rate of $76\pm2$ events/(t y keV) between 1 and 30 keV, the data enables sensitive searches for solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment, and bosonic dark matter. An excess over known backgrounds is observed at low energies and most prominent between 2 and 3 keV. The solar axion model has a 3.4$\sigma$ significance, and a 3D 90% confidence surface is reported for axion couplings to electrons, photons, and nucleons. This surface is inscribed in the cuboid defined by $g_{ae}, Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures. v2 added Ar37 background discussion and best-fit mass of bosonic dark matter, v3 updated Ar37 discussion, tritium estimation, and solar axion energy spectrum. Abstract: Although experimental efforts have been active for about 30 years, a direct laboratory observation of vacuum magnetic birefringence, due to vacuum fluctuations, still needs confirmation: the predicted birefringence of vacuum is $$\Delta n = 4.0\times 10^{-24}$$ @ 1 T. Key ingredients of a polarimeter for detecting such a small birefringence are a long optical path within the magnetic field and a time dependent effect. To lengthen the optical path a Fabry–Perot is generally used with a finesse ranging from $${{\mathscr {F}}} \approx 10^4$$ to $${{\mathscr {F}}} \approx 7\times 10^5$$ . Interestingly, there is a difficulty in reaching the predicted shot noise limit of such polarimeters. We have measured the ellipticity and rotation noises along with Cotton-Mouton and Faraday effects as a function of the finesse of the cavity of the PVLAS polarimeter. The observations are consistent with the idea that the cavity mirrors generate a birefringence-dominated noise whose ellipticity is amplified by the cavity itself. The optical path difference sensitivity at $$10\;\hbox {Hz}$$ is $$S_{\Delta {{\mathscr {D}}}}=6\times 10^{-19}\;\hbox {m}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$$ , a value which we believe is consistent with an intrinsic thermal noise in the mirror coatings. Our findings prove that the continuous efforts to increase the finesse of the cavity to improve the sensitivity has reached a limit.

Abstract: Optical Fabry–Perot cavities always show a non-degeneracy of two orthogonal polarisation states. This is due to the unavoidable birefringence of dielectric mirrors whose effects are extremely important in Fabry–Perot-based high-accuracy polarimeters: in birefringent cavities, ellipticities and rotations mix. We have developed and present here a theory of the polarisation state dynamics in a birefringent Fabry–Perot resonator, and we validate it through measurements performed with the polarimeter of the PVLAS experiment. The measurements are performed while a laser is frequency-locked to the cavity, and provide values for the phase difference between the two orthogonal polarisation components introduced by the combination of the two cavity mirrors (equivalent wave-plate) and for the finesse of the cavity. The theoretical formulas and the experimental data agree well showing that the consequences of the mirror birefringence must be taken into account in this and in any other similar experiment.

Abstract: A fundamental quantum electrodynamics prediction which has so far not yet been confirmed experimentally by a direct observation in a laboratory experiment is γγ interactions. Such a direct observation requires a scenario where both the beam and the target are made of bosons, while so far experiments have exploited matter particles as beam and/or target. A consequence of the existence of γγ interactions is that vacuum features magnetic birefringence as a macroscopic property. Magnetic Birefringence of Vacuum (MBV) is due to interactions of beam photons with virtual photons of a magnetic field. These interactions are mediated by loops of electron-positron and (with extremely weaker effects) by loops of muons and loops of hadrons, and could possibly be mediated by hypothetical very light particles with a coupling to two photons. Experimentation to detect MBV not only has started much later than experiments that have provided magnificent validations of QED, like g-2 and Lamb shift, but has not yet matched the performances necessary to observe MBV. A summary of the main properties and performances of experiments aiming at MBV detection is given with focus on recent results of the PVLAS experiment. The time evolution of the missing factor which monitors the capability of an experiment to observe MBV is reported. This evolution points to MBV detection in a near future. MBV experimentation could evolve from detection to precision measurements modulo a change in scale of the experiments, if it will be possible to exploit together the peak performances achieved separately in components of different MBV experiments. Data collected with the aim of detecting MBV provide at present the best model independent limits on the coupling to two photons of (so far hypothetical) very light scalar and pseudoscalar particles.

Abstract: We describe the principle and the status of the PVLAS experiment which is presently running at the INFN section of Ferrara, Italy, to detect the magnetic birefringence of vacuum. This is related to the QED vacuum structure and can be detected by measuring the ellipticity acquired by a linearly polarized light beam propagating through a strong magnetic field. Such an effect is predicted by the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian. The method is also sensitive to other hypothetical physical effects such as axion-like particles and in general to any fermion/boson millicharged particle. Here we report on the construction of our apparatus based on a high finesse ($>2\cdot10^5$) Fabry-Perot cavity and two 0.9 m long 2.5 T permanent dipole rotating magnets, and on the measurements performed on a scaled down test setup. With the test setup we have improved by about a factor 2 the limit on the parameter $A_e$ describing non linear electrodynamic effects in vacuum: $A_e < 2.9\cdot10^{-21}$ T$^{-2}$ @ 95% c.l., 18 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: Nonlinear effects in vacuum have been predicted but never observed yet directly. The PVLAS collaboration has long been working on an apparatus aimed at detecting such effects by measuring vacuum magnetic birefringence. A new small prototype ellipsometer has been designed and characterized at the Department of Physics of the University of Ferrara, Italy entirely mounted on a single seismically isolated optical bench. With a finesse F = 414,000 and a cavity length L = 0.5 m we have reached the sensitivity of ψ = 2 ⋅ 10 − 8 1 / Hz given the laser power at the output of the ellipsometer of P = 24 mW. This record result, very close to the predicted limit, demonstrates the feasibility of reaching such sensitivities, and opens the way to designing a dedicated apparatus for a first detection of vacuum magnetic birefringence.

Abstract: We report a new precise measurement of the Cotton–Mouton effect in helium at T ≃ 290 K for the two wavelengths λ = 532 nm and λ = 1064 nm. The hypermagnetizability anisotropy Δη for helium is 0.92 ± 0.07 au at the wavelength of 532 nm and 0.98 ± 0.07 au at the wavelength of 1064 nm: these values agree well with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract: Microscopic processes in the quantum vacuum, such as photon-photon scattering and the Primakoff effect, where light, neutral, scalar/pseudoscalar particles are produced from a two-photon vertex, could give rise, in the presence of an external magnetic field, to macroscopically observable optical phenomena, such as vacuum birefringence and dichroism. Such particles are candidate constituents of the Cold Dark Matter. The PVLAS collaboration is operating a high-sensitivity (-10’’ l/dHz) optical ellipsometer capable of detecting very small changes in the light polarisation state induced by a strong transverse magnetic field on a linearly polarised laser beam. This ellipsometer is capable of measuring vacuum birefringences and dichroisms, in an independent way, down to levels below 10’ rad, for about one hour of data taking time. Preliminary results, involving the observation of candidate signals in vacuum, will be discussed.

Abstract: We have used the EGS4 Monte Carlo code of W.R. Nelson et al. (1985) to simulate the performance of a positron emission tomograph (PET) for small animals. The PET scanner is a four-head detector, made of matrices of 400 YAP:Ce (yttrium aluminium perovskite doped with cerium) finger-like crystals (2/spl times/2/spl times/30 mm/sup 3/ each), coupled to Hamamatsu R2486-06 position-sensitive photomultipliers. 3D reconstruction algorithms have been applied to the 3D simulated data. The reconstructed volume was 2/spl times/2/spl times/2 cm/sup 3/, the same as that of the reference mouse brain. The Monte Carlo results show that a spatial resolution below 2 mm (FWHM) can be obtained over the 2/spl times/2/spl times/2 cm/sup 3/ volume with a sensitivity of about 600 counts/(/spl mu/Cis) for a gantry diameter of 15 cm and a threshold of 50 keV.

Abstract: A combined SPECT-CT tomographic imager for breast cancer study is being developed as a large research program of Italian universities. The basic idea is to integrate the SPECT technique with a CT scanner in order to fuse the functional with the morphological information by using a high-resolution and compact gamma camera and a quasi-monochromatic X-ray system. These two dedicated systems will be assembled as a unique ring prototype, which will enable the authors to perform both the scintimammography and the X-ray tomography in the same geometrical conditions. High-intensity and tunable quasi-monochromatic X-ray beams have already been produced for mammography applications. The authors' aim is to investigate the use of this novel source for tomographic imaging of the breast.

Abstract: We report on the frequency locking of a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser to a 45 000 finesse, 87-cm-long, Fabry-Perot cavity using a modified form of the Pound-Drever-Hall technique. Necessary signals, such as light phase modulation and frequency correction feedback, are fed direcly to the infrared pump laser. Abstract: The PVLAS experiment, running at the Legnaro National Laboratory of INFN (Padova, Italy), is operating a 6.4 m long, 105 finesse Fabry‐Perot (FP) cavity frequency locked to a 1064 nm, 100 mW output power Nd:YAG infrared laser. This cavity has a quality factor greater than 1012, and is kept at resonance for periods of time in excess of several hours. A 100 mW, 532 nm, laser has been recently locked to an 87 cm long FP cavity with a finesse of 45000. Light power density at the center of this resonator was 1200 W/cm2. Short term plans of the PVLAS experiment foresee the installation of a 6.4 m long, 105 finesse, Fabry‐Perot resonator operating at 532 nm. Dedicated developments with a 532 nm, 5 W, input laser would provide a 10 kW/cm2 power density, over a 1 cm2 cross section, useful for laser assisted H− full stripping.

Abstract: Xenon dual-phase time projection chambers designed to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles have so far shown a relative energy resolution which degrades with energy above $\sim$200 keV due to the saturation effects. This has limited their sensitivity in the search for rare events like the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe at its $Q$-value, $Q_{\beta\beta}\simeq$ 2.46 MeV. For the XENON1T dual-phase time projection chamber, we demonstrate that the relative energy resolution at 1 $\sigma/\mu$ is as low as (0.80$\pm$0.02) % in its one-ton fiducial mass, and for single-site interactions at $Q_{\beta\beta}$. We also present a new signal correction method to rectify the saturation effects of the signal readout system, resulting in more accurate position reconstruction and indirectly improving the energy resolution. The very good result achieved in XENON1T opens up new windows for the xenon dual-phase dark matter detectors to simultaneously search for other rare events., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We describe the principle and the status of the PVLAS experiment which is being assembled at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Legnaro, Padua, Italy) to look for coherent effects, related to the QED vacuum structure, on the propagation of a polarized light beam in a strong magnetic field.

34. Imaging evaluation of CsI(Tl) arrays for scintimammography

Abstract: Recently the application of small imagers in nuclear medicine is growing, particularly in scintimammography. In this paper we propose the use of the Hamamatsu R7600-C8 Position Sensitive Photomultiplier Tube (PSPMT) for detection image optimization in scintimammography through the evaluation of image performances of detector pixellation and its interaction with a collimator lattice . To this aim, a number of CsI(Tl) scintillating arrays with different pixel size and thickness were coupled to the same PSPMT. Considering the very high intrinsic spatial resolution, a look up table was realized to correct accurately the gain non uniformities. The results show an overall energy resolution FWHM, from flood field irradiation source, in close agreement with the individual crystal response and an uniformity response within ± 10%. Finally an analysis of tumor signal to noise ratio (SNR) as a function of detection pixellation was performed, utilizing a breast phantom. Tumor SNR values are highest for 5 mm thick CsI(Tl) arrays but shown slight differences with pixel size. The best tumor SNR value for 6 cm breast thick was obtained with 1.5 × 1.5 mm2 crystal pixel size. The collimator used was a low energy all purpose, parallel hole collimator with 22 mm length, 1.5 mm hexagonal hole, 0.2 mm Pb septa, currently utilized in scintimammography.
