1. Tradition Meets Technology: Acoustical Analysis of a Kazakh Dombra with Smartphones

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide physics teachers and physics students with interdisciplinary cultural and scientific related content. The "dombra" is on the one hand a cultural symbol of Kazakhstan with a long tradition. On the other hand, the dombra as a musical instrument is an object of interest in acoustics. The topic can lead to deeper insights into theory of musical instruments and acoustics and to positive motivational effects as well. The idea of this article originated in a guest lecture in physics at Taraz State Pedagogical University (Kazakhstan), where one of the authors introduced physics teacher students to "New Technologies in Physics Education." This course was about good practice examples of integration of mobile devices and their built-in sensors in physics classes. An overview of this innovative educational field is given in Ref. 1. There is a wide range of smartphone-enhanced experiments, from simple hands-on experiments to complex digital data collection and modeling tasks in particular in the field of acoustics.

2. Smartphones as Experimental Tools: Different Methods to Determine the Gravitational Acceleration in Classroom Physics by Using Everyday Devices

Abstract: New media technology becomes more and more important for our daily life as well as for teaching physics. Within the scope of our N.E.T. research project we develop experiments using New Media Experimental Tools (N.E.T.) in physics education and study their influence on students learning abilities. We want to present the possibilities e.g. of smartphones as special new media devices serving as tools for conducting experiments in classroom physics and in daily life as well. In this paper, we give an overview about different methods for determining the gravitational acceleration as one of the most fundamental parameter in physics by using these easy-to-have and easy-to-use everyday tools. The theoretically backgrounds of the experiments range from the simple use of the law of gravitation to the coefficient of restitution and refer to different physical concepts (mechanics and acoustics). So each of these experiments requires different pre-conditions and it's possible to conduct these experiments and determine this most fundamental parameter in classroom physics by completely different types of learners (high-school as well as college level).

5. The Use of Lesson Study Combined with Content Representation in the Planning of Physics Lessons during Field Practice to Develop Pedagogical Content Knowledge

Abstract: Recent research, both internationally and in Norway, has clearly expressed concerns about missing connections between subject-matter knowledge, pedagogical competence and real-life practice in schools. This study addresses this problem within the domain of field practice in teacher education, studying pre-service teachers' planning of a Physics lesson. Two means of intervention were introduced. The first was lesson study, which is a method for planning, carrying out and reflecting on a research lesson in detail with a learner and content-centered focus. This was used in combination with a second means, content representations, which is a systematic tool that connects overall teaching aims with pedagogical prompts. Changes in teaching were assessed through the construct of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). A deductive coding analysis was carried out for this purpose. Transcripts of pre-service teachers' planning of a Physics lesson were coded into four main PCK categories, which were thereafter divided into 16 PCK sub-categories. The results showed that the intervention affected the pre-service teachers' potential to start developing PCK. First, they focused much more on categories concerning the learners. Second, they focused far more uniformly in all of the four main categories comprising PCK. Consequently, these differences could affect their potential to start developing PCK.

Abstract: To study the nuclear structure of neutron-rich titanium isotopes, a lifetime measurement was performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) facility in Caen, France. The nucleiwere produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction by using a 6.76 MeV/u 238U beam. The Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was employed for the γ-ray detection and target-like recoils were identified event-by-event by the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++). Preliminary level lifetimes of the (5/2−) to 13/2− states of the yrast band in the neutron-rich nucleus 53Ti were measured for the first time employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method and the compact plunger for deep inelastic reactions. The differential decay curve method (DDCM) was used to obtain the lifetimes from the RDDS data.

7. Determining the Speed of Sound in Different Gases with a Dog Whistle

Abstract: Various experiments on vibrating gas columns and on frequency measurements with glasses and pipes have been presented in recent years in the "iPhysicsLabs" column. The determination of the sound velocity in different gases by measuring the sound running time has also already been proposed in an earlier paper. This article now adds another experiment to this series. Just by using a commercially available whistle (e.g., dog whistle, bobby whistle, or shrill whistle) and a smartphone with a spectroscope app, the speed of sound in various gases can be estimated. This experiment's chief merits are the straightforward experimental setup, the consumption of only small amounts of gas, the high measurement accuracy, and especially the simple theoretical background.

Abstract: Sapphire is a technologically highly relevant material, but it poses many challenges when performing epitaxial thin-film deposition. We have identified and applied the conditions for adsorption-controlled homoepitaxial growth of c-plane sapphire. The films thus grown are atomically smooth, have a controlled termination, and are of outstanding crystallinity. Their chemical purity exceeds that of the substrates. The films exhibit exceptional optical properties, such as a single-crystal-like bandgap and a low density of F+ centers.

Abstract: We investigate the composition of α-phase intermediate layers at epitaxial Ga2O3/Al2O3 interfaces using high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy. Their presence is considered a general phenomenon as they are observed independent of the growth technique [Schewski et al., Appl. Phys. Exp. 8, 011101]. Samples were grown by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy using different growth conditions. Almost independent of these, the quantitative evaluation of the measured intensities gave Ga concentrations of ∼25%. We show that the previously published model, based on a pure α-Ga2O3 interlayer, fails if it is adapted to the measured composition. Density functional theory (DFT) computations were used to overcome the approximations made in this model and suggest that a stabilization of the layer is possible due to the low Ga concentration (≤35%) at which the α-phase is the most stable. Our surface model computations suggest an exchange of Ga atoms at the surface with Al atoms from the underlying substrate as a possible formation mechanism.

10. Four-loop splitting functions in QCD – The quark-to-gluon case

Abstract: We present the even-N moments N≤20 of the fourth-order (N3LO) contribution Pgq(3)(x) to the quark-to-gluon splitting function in perturbative QCD. These moments, obtained by analytically computing off-shell operator matrix elements for a general gauge group, agree with all known results, in particular with the moments N≤10 derived before from structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering. Using the new moments and the available endpoint constraints, we construct approximations for Pgq(3)(x) which improve upon those obtained from the lowest five even moments. The remaining uncertainties of this function are now practically irrelevant at momentum fractions x>0.1. The resulting errors of the convolution of Pgq at N3LO with a typical quark distribution are small at x≳10−3 and exceed 1% only at x≲10−4 for a strong coupling αs=0.2. The present results for Pgq(3)(x) should thus be sufficient for most collider-physics applications.

Abstract: Projectile Coulomb excitation experiments were performed at HIE-ISOLDE at CERN with the radioactive ion beams of 140Nd and 142Sm. Ions with an energy of 4:62 MeV/A were impinging on a 1.45 mg/cm2 thick 208Pb target. The γ-rays depopulating the Coulomb-excited states were recorded by the HPGe-array MINIBALL and scattered particles were detected by a double-sided silicon strip detector. Experimental intensities were used for the determination of electromagnetic transition matrix elements. A preliminary result of the B(M1; 2+3 → 2+1) of 140Nd and an upper limit for the case of 142Sm are revealing the main fragments of the proton-neutron mixed-symmetry 2+1;ms states.

13. Determination of the Drag Resistance Coefficients of Different Vehicles

Abstract: While it has been demonstrated how air resistance could be analyzed by using mobile devices, this paper demonstrates a method of how to determine the drag resistance coefficient "c" of a commercial automobile by using the acceleration sensor of a smartphone or tablet. In an academic context, the drag resistance is often mentioned, but little attention is paid to quantitative measurements. This experiment was driven by the fact that this physical value is most certainly neglected because of its difficult measurability. In addition to that, this experiment gives insights on how the aerodynamic factor of an automobile affects the energy dissipation and thus how much power is required by automobile transportation.

Abstract: Abstract Combinatorial pulsed laser deposition (C‐PLD) based on segmented targets has led to new possibilities in the pace of discovery of novel advanced materials with significantly reduced deposition time and material consumption. However, fabrication of established segmented targets may be complex or not even possible for certain material combinations. In this article, two alternative C‐PLD techniques based on easy‐to‐fabricate segmented targets are presented. One approach uses two semi‐circular segments A and B with a systematic adjustable lateral shift of the target rotation axis from the target center. The other approach is based on a new target design defined by an ABA‐segmentation where B is a horizontal bar between two semi‐circular segments of A. Both approaches enable growth of discrete composition libraries. The concepts and important parameters are introduced and computer simulations as function of the geometric parameters are made to yield the expected thin film compositions. As proof‐of‐concept, the techniques are employed on the transparent, semiconducting ternary alloy zinc‐tin‐oxide. The simulations are in very good agreement with the experimental data. Physical properties of films grown by the demonstrated approaches are compared with those obtained by established PLD processes.

Abstract: In the present study, B(E2; 2+ → 0+) values have been measured in the 208Rn and 206Po nuclei through Coulomb excitation of re-accelerated radioactive beams in inverse kinematics at CERN-ISOLDE. The resulting B(E2; 2+ → 0+) in 208Rn is ∼ 0.08 e2b2. These nuclei lie in, or at the boundary of the region where seniority scheme should persist. However, contributions from collective excitations may be present when moving away from the N = 126 shell closure. To date, surprisingly little is known of the transition probabilities between the low-spin states in this region.

16. Additional moments and x-space approximations of four-loop splitting functions in QCD

Abstract: We have extended our previous computations of the even-N moments of the flavour-singlet four-loop splitting functions to N=12 for the pure-singlet quark case and N=10 for all other cases. These results, obtained using physical quantities in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, have been and will be used to validate conceptionally much more challenging determinations of these splitting functions from off-shell operator matrix elements (OMEs). For the quark-gluon and gluon-gluon splitting functions, which have yet to be computed to higher N using OMEs, we construct approximations based on our moments and endpoint constraints, where we present new large-x results for the gluon-gluon case. These approximations facilitate an approximate N3LO evolution of parton distributions which are sufficiently accurate outside the region of small momentum fractions x.

Abstract: The growth of α-Ga2O3 and α-(InxGa1−x)2O3 on m-plane α-Al2O3(101̄0) by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metal-oxide-catalyzed epitaxy (MOCATAXY) is investigated. By systematically exploring the parameter space accessed by MBE and MOCATAXY, phase-pure α-Ga2O3(101̄0) and α-(InxGa1−x)2O3(101̄0) thin films are realized. The presence of In on the α-Ga2O3 growth surface remarkably expands its growth window far into the metal-rich flux regime and to higher growth temperatures. With increasing O-to-Ga flux ratio (RO), In incorporates into α-(InxGa1−x)2O3 up to x ≤ 0.08. Upon a critical thickness, β-(InxGa1−x)2O3 nucleates and, subsequently, heteroepitaxially grows on top of α-(InxGa1−x)2O3 facets. Metal-rich MOCATAXY growth conditions, where α-Ga2O3 would not conventionally stabilize, lead to single-crystalline α-Ga2O3 with negligible In incorporation and improved surface morphology. Higher TTC further results in single-crystalline α-Ga2O3 with well-defined terraces and step edges at their surfaces. For RO ≤ 0.53, In acts as a surfactant on the α-Ga2O3 growth surface by favoring step edges, while for RO ≥ 0.8, In incorporates and leads to a-plane α-(InxGa1−x)2O3 faceting and the subsequent (2̄01) β-(InxGa1−x)2O3 growth on top. Thin film analysis by scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals highly crystalline α-Ga2O3 layers and interfaces. We provide a phase diagram to guide the MBE and MOCATAXY growth of single-crystalline α-Ga2O3 on α-Al2O3(101̄0).

19. Exploring the Atmosphere Using Smartphones

Abstract: The characteristics of the inner layer of the atmosphere, the troposphere, are determinant for Earth's life. In this experience we explore the first hundreds of meters using a smartphone mounted on a quadcopter. Both the altitude and the pressure are obtained using the smartphone's sensors. We complement these measures with data collected from the flight information system of an aircraft. The experimental results are compared with the International Standard Atmosphere and other simple approximations: isothermal and constant density atmospheres.

Abstract: The heteroepitaxial growth and phase formation of Ga2O3 on Al-polar AlN(0001) templates by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) are studied. Three different MBE approaches are employed: (i) conventional MBE, (ii) suboxide MBE (S-MBE), and (iii) metal-oxide-catalyzed epitaxy (MOCATAXY). We grow phase-pure β-Ga2O3(2̄01) and phase-pure ϵ/κ-Ga2O3(001) with smooth surfaces by S-MBE and MOCATAXY. Thin film analysis shows that the crystallographic and surface features of the β-Ga2O3(2̄01)/AlN(0001) and ϵ/κ-Ga2O3(001)/AlN(0001) epilayers are of high crystalline quality. Growth and phase diagrams are developed to synthesize Ga2O3 on AlN by MBE and MOCATAXY and to provide guidance to grow Ga2O3 on several non-oxide surfaces, e.g., AlN, GaN, and SiC, by MBE, S-MBE, and MOCATAXY.

21. Analyzing the Acoustic Beat with Mobile Devices

Abstract: In this column, we have previously presented various examples of how physical relationships can be examined by analyzing acoustic signals using smartphones or tablet PCs. In this example, we will be exploring the acoustic phenomenon of small beats, which is produced by the overlapping of two tones with a low difference in frequency ?f. The resulting auditory sensation is a tone with a volume that varies periodically. Acoustic beats can be perceived repeatedly in day-to-day life and have some interesting applications. For example, string instruments are still tuned with the help of an acoustic beat, even with modern technology. If a reference tone (e.g., 440 Hz) and, for example, a slightly out-of-tune violin string produce a tone simultaneously, a beat can be perceived. The more similar the frequencies, the longer the duration of the beat. In the extreme case, when the frequencies are identical, a beat no longer arises. The string is therefore correctly tuned. Using the Oscilloscope app, it is possible to capture and save acoustic signals of this kind and determine the beat frequency "fS" of the signal, which represents the difference in frequency ?f of the two overlapping tones (for Android smartphones, the app OsciPrime Oscilloscope can be used).

Abstract: Many regions of the Himalaya are experiencing forest expansion, signifying a widespread forest transition across this fragile mountain system. In the Nepal Himalaya, forest expansion is increasingly attributed to the narrative of cropland abandonment driven by rural outmigration. Understanding forest change dynamics as consequences of land use changes is critical in the context of rural mountain societies such as Nepal, which exhibit complex interactions between forest, agriculture, and livelihoods. We analysed forest gain in Nepal from 2000–2019 to inquire where and when forests have expanded and what land covers transitioned into forests. We integrated spatiotemporal analysis of national land cover maps and photointerpretation of very high resolution (VHR) imagery to improve analytical estimates. The Middle Mountain physiographic region experienced the strongest hot spots of forest gains relative to the high mountains or lowlands. Visual interpretation of VHR showed that 68.8% of forest gains since 2000 occurred on shrubland, and 26.5% on cropland. The dominance of shrubland-forest transitions implied that shrubland is an intermediate stage in a multi-decadal succession process, or a semi-permanent state such as arrested succession. Notably however, we also detected cropland-forest transitions occurring as fast as 6–10 years, indicating the potential for rapid forest succession if biophysical conditions permit. Thus, variations in land cover transitions to forests in the hills implicated multiple pathways of forest regeneration, reflecting a variety of spatiotemporally explicit drivers. Our results differ from previous studies because VHR image analysis accounted for land cover classification errors and improved land cover quantification. Further research on spatially explicit mechanisms and drivers of forest gain are needed to understand the synergies of forest, agriculture, and livelihoods to inform land use land cover policies that could be leveraged to enhance rural mountain livelihoods.

23. Fission Fragment Angular Momenta: Generation and Observation

Abstract: The fission fragment angular momenta can generally be expressed in terms of the six normal modes of rotation for the dinucleus and different models populate those modes to different degrees reflecting the mechanisms involved. For the nucleon exchange mechanism, the characteristic time scales for the various modes are discussed, leading to the expectation that the wriggling mode is fully populated, while twisting is unlikely to play a major role; bending probably has some presence which increases with mass asymmetry. Subsequently it is discussed how information about the fragment spin directions can be determined by observation of E2 emissions in even-even nuclei. It is shown how the yield ratio Y (0°)/Y (90°) in a modern Wilhelmy-type experiment can reveal the degree of twisting, a measurement that could be readily carried out now. Furthermore, with a view towards the future when the required technology has been developed, it is illustrated how the relative role of positive modes (wriggling) and negative modes (bending and twisting) can be determined by measuring the opening angle between two E2 photons whose helicities are also identified.

Abstract: We describe and benchmark a new quantum charge-coupled device (QCCD) trapped-ion quantum computer based on a linear trap with periodic boundary conditions, which resembles a race track. The new system successfully incorporates several technologies crucial to future scalability—including electrode broadcasting, multilayer rf routing, and magneto-optical trap (MOT) loading—while maintaining, and in some cases exceeding, the gate fidelities of previous QCCD systems. The system is initially operated with 32 qubits, but future upgrades will allow for more. We benchmark the performance of primitive operations, including an average state preparation and measurement error of 1.6(1)×10^{-3}, an average single-qubit gate infidelity of 2.5(3)×10^{-5}, and an average two-qubit gate infidelity of 1.84(5)×10^{-3}. The system-level performance of the quantum processor is assessed with mirror benchmarking, linear cross-entropy benchmarking, a quantum volume measurement of QV=2^{16}, and the creation of 32-qubit entanglement in a GHZ state. We also tested application benchmarks, including Hamiltonian simulation, QAOA, error correction on a repetition code, and dynamics simulations using qubit reuse. We also discuss future upgrades to the new system aimed at adding more qubits and capabilities.

27. Experiments Using Cell Phones in Physics Classroom Education: The Computer-Aided 'g' Determination

Abstract: This paper continues the collection of experiments that describe the use of cell phones as experimental tools in physics classroom education. We describe a computer-aided determination of the free-fall acceleration "g" using the acoustical Doppler effect. The Doppler shift is a function of the speed of the source. Since a free-falling objects speed is changing linearly with time, the Doppler shift is also changing with time. It is possible to measure this shift using software that is both easy to use and readily available. Students will use the time-dependency of the Doppler shift to experimentally determine the acceleration due to gravity by using a cell phone as a freely falling object emitting a sound with constant frequency.

29. Pure-rotational and rotational-vibrational Raman spectrum of the atmosphere at an altitude of 23 km

Abstract: Ground-based optical astronomical observations supported by or in the vicinity of laser guide-star systems can be contaminated by Raman-scattered laser photons. Anticipating, alleviating, and correcting for the impact of this self-inflicted contamination requires a detailed knowledge of the pure-rotational and rotational-vibrational spectrum of the molecules in our atmosphere. We present a 15.3-hr-deep combined spectrum of the 4LGSF's 589 nm≈509 THz sodium laser beams of Paranal observatory, acquired with the ESPRESSO spectrograph at a resolution λ/Δλ≅140000≈0.12 cm^{−1} and an altitude of 23 km above mean sea level. We identify 865 Raman lines over the spectral range of [3770; 7900] Å≈ [+9540; –4315] cm^{−1}, with relative intensities spanning ∼5 orders of magnitudes. These lines are associated to the most abundant molecules of dry air, including their isotopes: ^{14}N^{14}N, ^{14}N^{15}N, ^{16}O^{16}O, ^{16}O^{17}O, ^{16}O^{18}O, and ^{12}C^{16}O^{16}O. The signal-to-noise of these observations implies that professional observatories can treat the resulting catalog of Raman lines as exhaustive (for the detected molecules, over the observed Raman shift range) for the purpose of predicting/correcting/exploiting Raman lines in astronomical data. Our observations also reveal that the four laser units of the 4LGSF do not all lase at the same central wavelength. We measure a blueshift of +43±10 MHz ≅−50∓10 fm with respect to λ_{*}=5891.59120 Å for LGSU1/2, and +94±10 MHz ≅−109∓10 fm for LGSU3/4. These offsets, including the difference of ∼50 MHz between LGSU1/2 and LGSU3/4, are larger than the observed 4LGSF spectral stability of ±3 MHz over hours. They remain well within the operational requirements for creating artificial laser guide-stars, but hinder the assessment of the radial velocity accuracy of ESPRESSO at the required level of 10 m s^{−1}. Altogether, our observations demonstrate how Raman lines can be exploited by professional observatories as highly-accurate, on-sky wavelength references.

Similar nuclear data needs are shared by many applications, thus prioritizing these needs is especially important and urgently needed. Many levels of analysis are required to prepare nuclear measurements for employment in end-user applications. Because research expertise is typically limited to one level, collaboration across organizations and international borders is essential. This perspective piece provides the latest advances in nuclear data for applications and describes an outlook for both near- and long-term progress in the field.

Abstract: Highly sensitive terahertz (THz) sensors for a myriad of applications are rapidly evolving. A widespread sensor concept is based on the detection of minute resonance frequency shifts due to a targeted specimen in the sensors environment. Therefore, cutting-edge high resolution continuous wave (CW) THz spectrometers provide very powerful tools to investigate the sensors' performances. However, unpredictable yet non negligible frequency drifts common to state-of-the-art CW THz spectrometers limit the sensors' accuracy for ultra-high precision sensing and metrology. Here, we overcome this deficiency by introducing an ultra-high quality (Q) THz microresonator frequency reference. Measuring the sensor's frequency shift relative to a well-defined frequency reference eliminates the unwanted frequency drift, and fully exploits the capabilities of modern CW THz spectrometers as well as THz sensors. In a proof-of-concept experiment, we demonstrate the accurate and repeated detection of minute resonance frequency shifts of less than 5MHz at 0.6THz of a THz microresonator sensor.

34. Restructuring of titanium oxide overlayers over nickel nanoparticles during catalysis

Abstract: Reducible supports can affect the performance of metal catalysts by the formation of suboxide overlayers upon reduction, a process referred to as the strong metal–support interaction (SMSI). A combination of operando electron microscopy and vibrational spectroscopy revealed that thin TiO x overlayers formed on nickel/titanium dioxide catalysts during 400°C reduction were completely removed under carbon dioxide hydrogenation conditions. Conversely, after 600°C reduction, exposure to carbon dioxide hydrogenation reaction conditions led to only partial reexposure of nickel, forming interfacial sites in contact with TiO x and favoring carbon–carbon coupling by providing a carbon species reservoir. Our findings challenge the conventional understanding of SMSIs and call for more-detailed operando investigations of nanocatalysts at the single-particle level to revisit static models of structure-activity relationships.

35. Ultrabroadband density of states of amorphous In-Ga-Zn-O

Abstract: The subgap density of states of amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) is obtained using the ultrabroadband photoconduction response of thin-film transistors (TFTs). Density-functional theory simulations classify the origin of the measured subgap density of states peaks as a series of donorlike oxygen vacancy states and acceptorlike Zn vacancy states. Donor peaks are found both near the conduction band and deep in the subgap, with peak densities of 10^{17}−10^{18}cm^{−3}eV^{−1}. Two deep acceptorlike peaks lie adjacent to the valance-band Urbach tail region at 2.0–2.5 eV below the conduction-band edge, with peak densities in the range of 10^{18}cm^{−3}eV^{−1}. By applying detailed charge balance, we show that increasing the deep acceptor density strongly shifts the a-IGZO TFT threshold voltage to more positive values. Photoionization (hν>2.0eV) of deep acceptors is one cause of transfer curve hysteresis in a-IGZO TFTs, owing to longer recombination lifetimes as electrons are captured into acceptorlike vacancies.

36. Dead magnetic layers at the interface: Moment quenching through hybridization and frustration

Abstract: Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) we observe a two-dimensional c(2×2) antiferromagnetic state in a pseudomorphic Mn double layer on the W(001) surface. First-principles calculations confirm the antiferromagnetic ground state. Surprisingly, only the surface Mn layer possesses a magnetic moment while the moments of interface Mn atoms vanish. Calculated STM and spin-polarized STM images as well as local vacuum density of states are in good agreement with experiments and provide strong evidence of a dead magnetic interface layer.

37. Effect of atomic structure on the electrical response of aluminum oxide tunnel junctions

Abstract: Many nanoelectronic devices rely on thin dielectric barriers through which electrons tunnel. For instance, aluminium oxide barriers are used as Josephson junctions in superconducting electronics. The reproducibility and drift of circuit parameters in these junctions are affected by the uniformity, morphology, and composition of the oxide barriers. To improve these circuits the effect of the atomic structure on the electrical response of aluminium oxide barriers must be understood. We create three-dimensional atomistic models of aluminium oxide tunnel junctions and simulate their electronic transport properties with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. With this approach we are better able to understand the role that fluctuations in the density and stoichiometry of the oxide play in the electrical response of the junctions. For instance, increasing the oxide density produces an exponential increase in the junction resistance. In addition we observe the formation of metallic channels in highly oxygen-deficient junctions. We find that local variations in density or stoichiometry can lead to localized conduction channels, even for a junction of uniform thickness. The atomistic approach we have taken provides a better understanding of these transport processes and guides the design of junctions for nanoelectronics applications.

Abstract: Biogenic organic precursors play an important role in atmospheric new particle formation (NPF). One of the major precursor species is α-pinene, which upon oxidation can form a suite of products covering a wide range of volatilities. Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) comprise a fraction of the oxidation products formed. While it is known that HOMs contribute to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, including NPF, they have not been well studied in newly formed particles due to their very low mass concentrations. Here we present gas- and particle-phase chemical composition data from experimental studies of α-pinene oxidation, including in the presence of isoprene, at temperatures (−50 and −30 ∘C) and relative humidities (20 % and 60 %) relevant in the upper free troposphere. The measurements took place at the CERN Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets (CLOUD) chamber. The particle chemical composition was analyzed by a thermal desorption differential mobility analyzer (TD-DMA) coupled to a nitrate chemical ionization–atmospheric pressure interface–time-of-flight (CI-APi-TOF) mass spectrometer. CI-APi-TOF was used for particle- and gas-phase measurements, applying the same ionization and detection scheme. Our measurements revealed the presence of C8−10 monomers and C18−20 dimers as the major compounds in the particles (diameter up to ∼ 100 nm). Particularly, for the system with isoprene added, C5 (C5H10O5−7) and C15 compounds (C15H24O5−10) were detected. This observation is consistent with the previously observed formation of such compounds in the gas phase. However, although the C5 and C15 compounds do not easily nucleate, our measurements indicate that they can still contribute to the particle growth at free tropospheric conditions. For the experiments reported here, most likely isoprene oxidation products enhance the growth of particles larger than 15 nm. Additionally, we report on the nucleation rates measured at 1.7 nm (J1.7 nm) and compared with previous studies, we found lower J1.7 nm values, very likely due to the higher α-pinene and ozone mixing ratios used in the present study.

Abstract: Alonso et al., We summarise the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Finally, we present a first draft of a possible road-map for achieving these goals, that we propose for discussion by the interested cold atom, Earth Observation, fundamental physics and other prospective scientific user communities, together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and national space and research funding agencies., We thank the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative for their support of the workshop that laid the basis for this paper.

40. Quick-look estimates of ionospheric properties from radio occultation data

Abstract: Radio occultations are commonly used to determine vertical profiles of ionospheric electron density from measurements of frequency. “Frequency residuals” are important intermediate data products in radio occultation experiments. Frequency residuals are defined as the difference between observed and predicted values of the received frequency, where the predicted frequency includes all effects except refraction at the target object. However, relationships between properties of a vertical profile of ionospheric electron density and properties of time series of frequency residuals are not widely known by the broad community of scientists who may work with frequency residuals. Here we illustrate and explain how properties of a vertical profile of ionospheric electron density affect time series of frequency residuals. We also develop four quantitative relationships between electron density values and frequency residuals. These provide predictions for the topside plasma scale height, topside electron densities, peak altitude, and peak electron density that can be generated directly from a set of frequency residuals without the need to implement the full Abel transform analysis that is usually required to determine electron densities from frequency residuals. They can also be generated prior to the implementation of a high-quality baseline correction, to which the Abel transform analysis is sensitive. The development of these predictions assumed that the ionosphere has an exponential topside and a Chapman-like peak. These predictions are successfully tested on two-way radio occultation observations from the MAVEN Radio Occultation Science Experiment (ROSE) at Mars.

41. The value of vague ideas in the development of the periodic system of chemical elements

Abstract: The exploration of chemical periodicity over the past 250 years led to the development of the Periodic System of Elements and demonstrates the value of vague ideas that ignored early scientific anomalies and instead allowed for extended periods of normal science where new methodologies and concepts are developed. The basic chemical element provides this exploration with direction and explanation and has shown to be a central and historically adaptable concept for a theory of matter far from the reductionist frontier. This is explored in the histories of Prout’s hypothesis, Dobereiner Triads, element inversions necessary when ordering chemical elements by atomic weights, and van den Broeck’s ad-hoc proposal to switch to nuclear charges instead. The development of more accurate methods to determine atomic weights, Rayleigh and Ramsey’s gas separation and analytical techniques, Moseley’s x-ray spectroscopy to identify chemical elements, and more recent accelerator-based cold fusion methods to create new elements at the end of the Periodic Table point to the importance of methodological development complementing conceptual advances. I propose to frame the crossover from physics to chemistry not as a loss of accuracy and precision but as an increased application of vague concepts such as similarity which permit classification. This approach provides epistemic flexibility to adapt to scientific anomalies and the continued growth of chemical compound space and rejects the Procrustean philosophy of reductionist physics. Furthermore, it establishes chemistry with its explanatory and operational autonomy epitomized by the periodic system of elements as a gateway to other experimental sciences.

Abstract: Ubliche Entwicklungsbestrebungen haben zum Ziel, Schwingungsphanomene in Antriebsstrangen von Kraftfahrzeugen zu reduzieren, etwa durch aktive Schwingungstilgung. Im Gegensatz hierzu steht die kontrollierte Anregung von Eigenschwingungen bei dem in diesem Beitrag vorgestellten ,,Resonanzstart-Verfahren“ fur Verbrennungsmotoren. Durch die hiermit erreichte Absenkung des erforderlichen Elektromaschinen-Drehmoments werden beispielsweise Mild-Hybride ohne konventionellen Anlasser ermoglicht. Die fur eine passive Schwingungsisolation vorteilhafte, drehweiche Verbindung von Elektromaschinen-Rotor und Kurbelwelle ist hierbei Herausforderung und Nutzbringer zugleich.

Zuritathe FCC Collaboration, In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (EPPSU), the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched as a world-wide international collaboration hosted by CERN. The FCC study covered an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee), the corresponding 100km tunnel infrastructure, as well as the physics opportunities of these two colliders, and a high-energy LHC, based on FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the fourth volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the High-Energy Large Hadron Collider HE-LHC. It summarizes the HE-LHC physics discovery opportunities, presents the HE-LHC accelerator design, performance reach, and operation plan, discusses the underlying technologies, the civil engineering and technical infrastructure, and also sketches a possible implementation. Combining ingredients from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the high-luminosity LHC upgrade and adding novel technologies and approaches, the HE-LHC design aims at a hadron collider with about twice the centre-of-mass collision energy that the LHC can reach. Its performance aims at exploring physics beyond the Standard Model, signi cantly extending the LHC's direct and indirect sensitivity to new physics and discoveries.

Abstract: Belle II DEPFET, PXD, and SVD Collaborations: et al., The Belle II experiment comes with a substantial upgrade of the Belle detector and will operate at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric ee collider with energies tuned to ϒ(4S) resonance s=10.588 GeV. The accelerator has successfully completed the first phase of commissioning in 2016 and the first electron–positron collisions in Belle II took place in April 2018. Belle II features a newly designed silicon vertex detector based on DEPFET pixel and double-sided strip layers. Currently, a subset of the vertex detector is installed (Phase 2 of the experiment). Installation of the full detector (Phase 3) will be completed by the end of 2018. This paper describes the Phase 2 arrangement of the Belle II silicon vertex detector, with focus on the interconnection of detectors and their integration with the software framework of Belle II. Abstract: This numerical study aims at predicting the reflective behavior of different conventional inlet and outlet far-field boundary conditions as well as available non-reflecting boundary conditions (NRBC) implemented in the commercial CFD solver ANSYS CFX. An isolated rotor model of an axial turbine stage with prescribed blade displacement is applied as test case to consider a representative application case, while at the same time provoke an unsteady flow field featuring pronounced flow perturbations in the far-field. Since the reflective behavior of the implemented boundary conditions was found inadequate in the given application case, a zonal treatment of the inlet and outlet far-field, based on a modification of the governing Navier-Stokes equations, is investigated. The applied approach has proven its capability to suppress spurious reflections reliably, while at the same time ensures a preservation of the reference flow conditions within the required domain extensions. The results of a case study considering calculation domains of different spatial extent and different treatments of their respective far-fields suggest variations in the steady flow aerodynamics to be of moderate influence on the predicted aerodynamic damping, while spurious reflections were found to falsify the unsteady aerodynamics considerably.

Abstract: The closet exoplanets to the Sun provide opportunities for detailed characterization of planets outside the Solar System. We report the discovery, using radial velocity measurements, of a compact multiplanet system of super-Earth exoplanets orbiting the nearby red dwarf star GJ 887. The two planets have orbital periods of 9.3 and 21.8 days. Assuming an Earth-like albedo, the equilibrium temperature of the 21.8-day planet is ~350 kelvin. The planets are interior to, but close to the inner edge of, the liquid-water habitable zone. We also detect an unconfirmed signal with a period of ~50 days, which could correspond to a third super-Earth in a more temperate orbit. Our observations show that GJ 887 has photometric variability below 500 parts per million, which is unusually quiet for a red dwarf. © 2020 The Authors, some rights reserved; exclusive licensee American Association for the Advancement of Science. Abstract: PURPOSE The recently introduced robotic x-ray systems provide the flexibility to acquire cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data using customized, application-specific source-detector trajectories. We exploit this capability to mitigate the effects of x-ray scatter and noise in CBCT imaging of weight-bearing foot and cervical spine (C-spine) using scan orbits with a tilted rotation axis. METHODS We used an advanced CBCT simulator implementing accurate models of x-ray scatter, primary attenuation, and noise to investigate the effects of the orbital tilt angle in upright foot and C-spine imaging. The system model was parameterized using a laboratory version of a three-dimensional (3D) robotic x-ray system (Multitom RAX, Siemens Healthineers). We considered a generalized tilted axis scan configuration, where the detector remained parallel to patient's long body axis during the acquisition, but the elevation of source and detector was changing. A modified Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) algorithm was developed for reconstruction in this configuration, which departs from the FDK assumption of a detector that is perpendicular to the scan plane. The simulated foot scans involved source-detector distance (SDD) of 1386 mm, orbital tilt angles ranging 10° to 40°, and 400 views at 1 mAs/view and 0.5° increment; the C-spine scans involved -25° to -45° tilt angles, SDD of 1090 mm, and 202 views at 1.3 mAs and 1° increment The imaging performance was assessed by projection-domain measurements of the scatter-to-primary ratio (SPR) and by reconstruction-domain measurements of contrast, noise and generalized contrast-to-noise ratio (gCNR, accounting for both image noise and background nonuniformity) of the metatarsals (foot imaging) and cervical vertebrae (spine imaging). Abstract: New time-resolved photometric observations of three close but detached white dwarf/red dwarf binaries have enabled an in-depth analysis of their properties, combining new data with known information. For HZ 9, time-resolved photometric data have not been published previously. Our data reveal sinusoidal variations, with the orbital period showing unusual phase shifts between expected and observed light maximum epochs when combining our photometry with the precise radial velocity ephemeris. There are also variations of the photometric amplitude between 0.04 and 0.11 mag. Phase shifts and amplitude variations could be the result of a relatively strong magnetic activity of the secondary M star component, which seems to superimpose the usual reflection effect. This effect is dominant in the two remaining targets of our study. We improve the accuracy of the photometric ephemeris of KV Vel, complementing published data with light curves from the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) and ASAS-SN and with our own observations. Finally, we also add new data for the central star of the planetary nebula Abell 65, complementing and confirming its previously published photometric ephemeris.

Abstract: Failures of tailings dams, primarily due to liquefaction, have occurred in Brazil in recent years. These events have prompted the Brazilian government to place restrictions on the construction of new dams, as iron ore tailings deposited behind upstream dams by spigotting have been shown to have low in situ densities and strengths and are prone to failure. This work proposes a new trend for tailings disposal: stacking compacted filtered ore tailings–Portland cement blends. As part of the proposal, it analyses the behaviour of compacted iron ore tailings–Portland cement blends, considering the use of small amounts of Portland cement under distinct compaction degrees. With the intention of evaluating the stress–strain–strength–durability behaviour of the blends, the following tests were carried out: unconfined compression tests; pulse velocity tests; wetting–drying tests; and standard drained triaxial compression tests with internal measurement of strains. This is the first study performed to determine the strength and initial shear stiffness evolution of iron ore tailings–Portland cement blends during their curing time, as well friction angle and cohesion intercept. This manuscript postulates an analysis of original experimental results centred on the porosity/cement index (η/Civ). This index can help select the cement quantity and density for important design parameters of compacted iron ore tailings–cement blends required in geotechnical engineering projects such as the proposed compacted filtered iron ore tailings–cement blends stacking.
